Circumnuclear star formation (SF) is generally seen in galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN); however, the connection between the AGN activity and SF in them is less well understood. To explore this connection on scales of a few tens of parsecs to a few tens of kiloparsecs and larger, we carried out an investigation of SF in seven Seyfert-type AGN and one low-ionization nuclear emission-line region galaxy, using observations with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope on board AstroSat in the near-ultraviolet (2000–3000 Å) and far-ultraviolet (1300−1800 Å) bands. A total of 1742 star-forming regions were identified, having size scales of 0.010–63.642 kpc2. Considering all the galaxies, we found a positive correlation between their total surface density of SF (ΣSFR) and extinction. For five galaxies, namely NGC 1365, NGC 4051, NGC 4321, NGC 5033, and NGC 6814, we found a gradual decrease of both extinction and ΣSFR from the centre to the outer regions. Four sources are found to lie in the main sequence of star-forming galaxies, and the other four lie away from it. We found the ratio of the star formation rate (SFR) in the nuclear region to the total SFR to be positively correlated with the Eddington ratio. This points to the influence of AGN in enhancing the SF characteristics of the hosts. Measuring the environments of massive galaxies at high redshift is crucial to understanding galaxy evolution and the conditions that gave rise to the distribution of matter we see in the Universe today. While high- z radio galaxies (H z RGs) and quasars tend to reside in protocluster-like systems, the environments of their radio-quiet counterparts are relatively unexplored, particularly in the submillimetre, which traces dust-obscured star formation. In this study, we search for 850  μ m-selected submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the environments of massive (⁠|$M_{\star }$| |$\gt 10^{11}$| |${\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠), radio-quiet (⁠|$L_{500 {\rm MHz}}$| |$\lesssim 10^{25}$|  WHz |$^{-1}$|⁠) galaxies at |$z \sim 1\!-\!3$| using data from the SCUBA-2 COSMOS (S2COSMOS) survey. By constructing number counts in circular regions of radius 1–6 arcmin and comparing with blank-field measurements, we find no significant overdensities of SMGs around massive radio-quiet galaxies at any of these scales, despite being sensitive down to overdensities of |$\delta \sim 0.4$|⁠. To probe deeper than the catalogue we also examine the distribution of peaks in the SCUBA-2 signal-to-noise (SNR) map, which reveals only tentative signs of any difference in the SMG densities of the radio-quiet galaxy environments compared to the blank field, and only on smaller scales (1 arcmin radii, corresponding to |$\sim 0.5$|  Mpc) and higher SNR thresholds. We conclude that massive, radio-quiet galaxies at cosmic noon are typically in environments with |$\delta \lesssim 0.4$|⁠ , which are either consistent with the blank field or contain only weak overdensities spanning sub-Mpc scales. The contrast between our results and studies of H z RGs with similar stellar masses and redshifts implies an intrinsic link between the wide-field environment and the radio luminosity of the active galactic nucleus at high redshift. Atomic hydrogen (H  i) serves a crucial role in connecting galactic-scale properties such as star formation with the large-scale structure of the Universe. While recent numerical simulations have successfully matched the observed covering fraction of H  i near Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and in the foreground of luminous quasars at redshifts |$z \lesssim 3$|⁠ , the low-mass end remains as-of-yet unexplored in observational and computational surveys. We employ a cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation (FIREbox) supplemented with zoom-in simulations (MassiveFIRE) from the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project to investigate the H  i covering fraction of Lyman Limit Systems (⁠|$N_{{\text{H}}\, \rm{{\small I}}} \gtrsim 10^{17.2}$|  cm |$^{-2}$|⁠) across a wide range of redshifts (⁠|$z=0-6$|⁠) and halo masses (⁠|$10^8-10^{13} \, \,\mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$| at |$z=0$|⁠ , |$10^8-10^{11}\, \,\mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$| at |$z=6$|⁠) in the absence of feedback from active galactic nuclei. We find that the covering fraction inside haloes exhibits a strong increase with redshift, with only a weak dependence on halo mass for higher mass haloes. For massive haloes (⁠|$M_{\mathrm{vir}} \sim 10^{11}-10^{12} \,\mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$|⁠), the radial profiles showcase scale-invariance and remain independent of mass. The radial dependence is well captured by a fitting function. The covering fractions in our simulations are in good agreement with measurements of the covering fraction in LBGs. Our comprehensive analysis unveils a complex dependence with redshift and halo mass for haloes with |$M_{\mathrm{vir}} \lesssim 10^{10} \,\mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$| that future observations aim to constrain, providing key insights into the physics of structure formation and gas assembly. Red Geysers are galaxies with low-star formation rates and galactic scale ionized outflows likely driven by low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). We investigated the impact of AGN winds on the oxygen abundance using integral field spectroscopic data from Mapping Nearby Galaxies for Red Geysers, control galaxies (quiescent galaxies without outflows), and AGN hosts within the inner 1.5 kpc radius. Red Geyser galaxies have higher W |$_{80}$| values compared to those of AGN and controls, with 64 per cent showing W |$_{80}\gt 500$|  km s |$^{-1}$| that is indicative of outflow. Only 40 per cent of controls and 31 per cent of AGNs reach this value. We found a small tendency of the oxygen abundance distribution of controls to be biased towards higher values than those of Red Geysers. However, Red Geysers do not show a correlation between H |$\alpha$| width (parametrized by the W |$_{\rm 80}$|⁠) and oxygen abundance, which indicates that AGN winds are not significantly impacting the chemical abundance of the nuclear region of these galaxies. The oxygen abundance distribution mean value for the tree samples is |$\rm 12+log(O/H)\sim$| 8.7 (⁠|$\mathit{Z}\sim \rm Z_{\odot })$|⁠. On the other hand, AGN hosts show a positive correlation between W |$_{80}$| and O/H which could be due to star formation that outflows from the active nuclei could induce; or to the reservoir of gas that makes the nucleus active, and its is also used in the star formation. We present the first detailed radio study of the galaxy cluster XMMXCS J2215.9−1738 at z  = 1.46 using MeerKAT L -band (1.3 GHz) observations. We combine our radio observation with archival optical and infrared data to investigate the star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) population within |$R_{200}$| (⁠|$R =$| 0.8 Mpc) of the cluster centre. Using three selection criteria; the radio luminosity, the far-infrared radio ratio (⁠|$q_{\rm {IR}}$|⁠), and the mid-infrared colour, we distinguish galaxies with radio emission predominantly powered by star formation from that powered by AGNs. We selected 24 cluster members within |$R_{\rm {200}}$| in the MeerKAT image based on either their photometric or spectroscopic redshift. We classified 12/24 (50 per cent) as galaxies whose radio emission is dominated by star-formation activity, 6/24 (25 per cent) as intermediate star-forming galaxies, and 6/24 (25 per cent) as AGN-dominated galaxies. Using the radio continuum luminosities of the star-forming cluster galaxies, we estimated an integrated star formation rate (SFR) value of 1700 |$\pm$| 330 M |$_{\odot }$|  yr |$^{-1}$| within |$R_{200}$|⁠. We derived a mass-normalized integrated SFR value of |$(570 \pm 110) \times 10^{-14}$|  yr |$^{-1}$|⁠. This supports previous observational and theoretical studies that indicated a rapid increase in star formation activity within the core of high-redshift clusters. We present a morphological analysis of the 16 μ m flux-density-limited galaxy sample at 0.8 < z < 1.3 from Huang et al. (2021). At the targeted redshift, the 16 μ m emission corresponds to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon feature from intense star formation, or dust heated by active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our sample of 479 galaxies are dominated by luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs; 67%) in three CANDLES fields (Extended Groth Strip, ​​​​Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North and South fields), and are further divided into AGN-dominated, star-forming dominated, composite, and blue compact galaxies by their spectral energy distribution types. The majority of our sample (71%) have disk morphologies, with the few AGN-dominated galaxies being more bulge-dominated than the star-forming-dominated and composite galaxies. The distribution of our sample on the Gini versus M 20 plane is consistent with previous studies, where the Sérsic index n shows an increasing trend toward the smaller M 20 and higher Gini region below the dividing line for mergers. The subsample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) follows a steep size–mass relation that is closer to the early-type galaxies. In addition, as the 4.5 μ m luminosity excess ( L 4.5 exc , proxy for AGN strength) increases, our sample appears to be more bulge dominated (i.e., higher n). Based on the specific star formation rate and compactness ( log 10 Σ 1.5 , Σ 1.5 = M * / R e 1.5 ) diagram, the majority of our LIRG-dominated galaxy sample follows a secular evolution track, and their distribution can be explained without involving any merging activities. Aims. In this work, we carry out a comprehensive study using galaxy data from the Lockman Spectroscopic Redshift Survey using Osiris (Lockman-SpReSO) project, a far-infrared (FIR) selected sample of galaxies observed using optical spectroscopy. We analyse a sub-sample of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) with secure spectroscopic redshifts, mostly in the luminous infrared (IR) galaxy domain. From these galaxies, parameters such as the extinction, star formation rate (SFR), and metallicity have been derived. The present paper examines how these properties evolve in relation to each other and in comparison with low-redshift FIR and non-FIR-selected samples of galaxies. Methods. We applied distinct selection criteria to attain an SFG sample with minimal AGN contamination. Multiple approaches were used to estimate the intrinsic extinction, SFR, and gas-phase metallicity for the SFGs. In conjunction with findings in the literature, we examined the correlation between SFRs and stellar masses (M*), as well as the metallicity evolution depending on M*. Finally, we also studied the 3D relationship between M*, SFR, and metallicity. Results. From the initial spectroscopic sample of 409 FIR-selected objects from the Lockman-SpReSO catalogue, 69 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) were identified and excluded (17%), which is nearly double the percentage found in local studies, leaving us with a sample of 340 SFGs. The analysis of the M*–SFR relationship revealed that Lockman-SpReSO IR-selected SFGs show signs of evolution at redshifts z > 0.4, shifting above the main sequence (MS), with a mean value of ∼0.4 dex. They are located within the starburst galaxy region since 78% of the galaxies fall into this category. In addition, no evident flattening was found in the relation to specific SFR with redshift for log M* (M⊙)≳10.5. In line with the M*–metallicity relation (MZR) outcomes published in previous studies for optically selected SFGs; however, during the analysis of the MZR, it was found that IR-selected SFGs exhibit lower metallicities than the values anticipated on the basis of their M* and redshift. During the investigation of the 3D M*–SFR–metallicity relation (FP), it was established that the research sample is consistent with relations published in the existing literature, with an average scatter of ∼0.2 dex. However, a re-calibration of the FP when using the SFR obtained from the IR luminosity is required and, in this case, no attenuation in the correlation for log M* (M⊙)≳10.5 was observed. This result points to a possible evolution of the more massive fraction of the sample in the sense that the present-day star formation rate is lower with respect to the average rate of star formation in the past. Aims. Green peas (GPs) are young, compact, star-forming dwarf galaxies, and local (z ∼ 0.3) analogues of the early galaxies (z ≥ 6) considered to be mainly responsible for the reionisation of the Universe. Recent X-ray observations of GPs led to the detection of high excess emission, which cannot be accounted for by star formation alone and implies the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We employ radio observations to study the radio properties of GPs, build their radio spectral energy distributions, and verify the presence of AGNs. Methods. We performed new radio observations of three GPs with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) in the L, C, and X bands (1.4, 6 and 10 GHz resp.), and analysed them alongside data from archival observations and large radio surveys. We also analysed the archival radio data for a larger sample of GPs and blueberry (BBs) galaxies, which are lower-mass and lower-redshift analogues of the GPs. To understand the significance of the radio observations, we assess the detectability of these sources, and compare the detected radio luminosities with expectations from theoretical and empirical relations. Results. Two of the three targeted GPs are strongly detected (> 10σ) in the JVLA observations and their fluxes are consistent with star formation, while the third source is undetected. Although archival radio surveys have the sensitivity to detect a large fraction (∼75%) of the sources from the larger archival sample of GPs and BBs, we only detect a small number (< 40%) of them and their radio luminosity is significantly lower than the expectation from empirical relations. Conclusions. Our results show that the majority of the dwarf galaxies in our sample are highly underluminous. The radio luminosity–star formation rate (SFR) relation deviates from the empirical relations, especially towards the lower end of galaxy mass and SFR, suggesting that the relations established for larger galaxies may not hold towards the low-mass end. We present the Bidimensional Exploration of the warm-Temperature Ionised gaS (BETIS) project, designed for the spatial and spectral study of the diffuse ionised gas (DIG) in a selection of nearby spiral galaxies observed with the MUSE integral-field spectrograph. Our primary objective is to investigate the various ionisation mechanisms at play within the DIG. We analysed the distribution of high- and low-ionisation species in the optical spectra of the sample on a spatially resolved basis. We introduced a new methodology for spectroscopically defining the DIG, optimised for galaxies of different resolutions. Firstly, we employed an innovative adaptive binning technique on the observed datacube based on the spectroscopic signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the collisional [S II] line to increase the S/N of the rest of the lines including [O III], [O I], and He I. Subsequently, we created a DIG mask by eliminating the emissions associated with both bright and faint H II regions. We also examined the suitability of using Hα equivalent width (EWHα) as a proxy for defining the DIG and its associated ionisation regime. Notably, for EWHα < 3 Å – the expected emission from hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) – the measured value is contingent on the chosen population synthesis technique performed. Our analysis of the showcase sample reveals a consistent cumulative DIG fraction across all galaxies in the sample, averaging around 40%–70%. The average radial distribution of the [N II]/Hα, [S II]/Hα, [O I]/Hα, and [O III]/Hβ ratios are enhanced in the DIG regimes (up to 0.2 dex). It follows similar trends between the DIG regime and the H II regions, as well as the Hα surface brightness (ΣHα), indicating a correlation between the ionisation of these species in both the DIG and the H II regions. The DIG loci in typical diagnostic diagrams are found, in general, within the line ratios that correspond to photoionisation due to the star formation. There is a noticeable offset correspondent to ionisation due to fast shocks. However, an individual diagnosis performed for each galaxy reveals that all the DIG in these galaxies can be attributed to photoionisation from star formation. The offset is primarily due to the contribution of Seyfert galaxies in our sample, which is closely aligned with models of ionisation from fast shocks and galactic outflows, thus mimicking the DIG emission. Our results indicate that galaxies exhibiting active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity should be considered separately when conducting a general analysis of the DIG ionisation mechanisms, since this emission is indistinguishable from high-excitation DIG. We investigate the influence of star formation and instantaneous active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback processes on the ionized gas velocity dispersion in a sample of 1285 emission-line galaxies with stellar masses |$\log \, (M_*/\mathrm{ M}_{\odot }) \ge 9$| from the integral-field spectroscopy Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field Galaxy Survey. We fit both narrow- and broad-emission-line components using aperture spectra integrated within one effective radius, while ensuring the elimination of velocity differences between the spectra of individual spaxels. Our analysis reveals that 386 (30 per cent) galaxies can be adequately described using a single-emission component while 356 (28 per cent) galaxies require two (broad and narrow) components. Galaxies characterized by high-mass, elevated star formation rate surface density, or type-2 AGN-like emissions tend to feature an additional broad-emission-line component, leading to their classification as double-component galaxies. We explore the correlations between M * and gas velocity dispersions, highlighting that the prominence of the broad component significantly contributes to elevating the gas velocity dispersion. Galaxies displaying AGN-like emission based on optical definitions show enhanced gas velocity dispersions. In star-forming galaxies, both stellar mass and star-formation rate surface density substantially contribute to the velocity dispersion of the narrow component. Increased star-forming activity appears to elevate the velocity dispersion of the narrow component. The broad component exhibits a weaker dependence on stellar mass and is primarily driven by galactic outflows. We suggest that strong star-forming activity leads to the formation of a broad-emission-line component, but the impact on inflating gas velocity dispersion is moderate. On the other hand, AGN-driven outflows appear to be a more important contributor to the elevated velocity dispersion of the ionized gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public (NGDEEP) survey program was designed specifically to include Near Infrared Slitless Spectroscopic observations (NGDEEP-NISS) to detect multiple emission lines in as many galaxies as possible and across a wide redshift range using the Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph. We present early results obtained from the first set of observations (Epoch 1, 50% of the allocated orbits) of this program (NGDEEP-NISS1). Using a set of independently developed calibration files designed to deal with a complex combination of overlapping spectra, multiple position angles, and multiple cross filters and grisms, in conjunction with a robust and proven algorithm for quantifying contamination from overlapping dispersed spectra, NGDEEP-NISS1 has achieved a 3 σ sensitivity limit of 2 × 10−18 erg s−1 cm−2. We demonstrate the power of deep wide field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) to characterize the star formation rates, and metallicity ([O iii ]/H β), and dust content, of galaxies at 1 < z < 3.5. The latter showing intriguing initial results on the applicability and assumptions made regarding the use of Case B recombination. Further, we identify the presence of active galactic nuclei and infer the mass of their supermassive black holes using broadened restframe Mg ii and H β emission lines. The spectroscopic results are then compared with the physical properties of galaxies extrapolated from fitting spectral energy distribution models to photometry alone. The results clearly demonstrate the unique power and efficiency of WFSS at near-infrared wavelengths over other methods to determine the properties of galaxies across a broad range of redshifts. The impact of winds and jet-inflated bubbles driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to significantly affect the host galaxy's interstellar medium (ISM) and regulate star formation. To explore this scenario, we perform a suite of hydrodynamic simulations to model the interaction between turbulent star-forming clouds and highly pressurized AGN-driven outflows, focusing on the effects of self-gravity. Our results demonstrate that the cloudlets fragmented by the wind can become gravitationally bound, significantly increasing their survival time. While external pressurization leads to a global collapse of the clouds in cases of weaker winds (⁠|$10^{42}\!-\!10^{43}~{\rm erg\, s^{-1}}$|⁠), higher power winds (⁠|$10^{44}\!-\!10^{45}~{\rm erg\, s^{-1}}$|⁠) disperse the gas and cause localized collapse of the cloudlets. We also demonstrate that a kinetic energy-dominated wind is more efficient in accelerating and dispersing the gas than a thermal wind with the same power. The interaction can give rise to multiphase outflows with velocities ranging from a few 100 to several 1000  |${\rm km\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. The mass outflow rates are tightly correlated with the wind power, which we explain by an ablation-based mass-loss model. Moreover, the velocity dispersion and the virial parameter of the cloud material can increase by up to one order of magnitude through the effect of the wind. Even though the wind can suppress or quench star formation for about 1 Myr during the initial interaction, a substantial number of gravitationally bound dense cloudlets manage to shield themselves from the wind's influence and subsequently undergo rapid gravitational collapse, leading to an enhanced star formation rate. We present a model of radio continuum emission associated with star formation (SF) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) implemented in the Shark semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. SF emission includes free-free and synchrotron emission, which depend on the free-electron density and the rate of core-collapse supernovae with a minor contribution from supernova remnants, respectively. AGN emission is modelled based on the jet production rate, which depends on the black hole mass, accretion rate, and spin, and includes synchrotron self-absorption. Shark reproduces radio luminosity functions (RLFs) at |$1.4\, \rm GHz$| and |$150\, \rm MHz$| for 0 ≤ z ≤ 4, and scaling relations between radio luminosity, star formation rate, and infrared luminosity of galaxies in the local and distant universe in good agreement with observations. The model also reproduces observed number counts of radio sources from 150 MHz to 8.4 GHz to within a factor of 2 on average, though larger discrepancies are seen at the very bright fluxes at higher frequencies. We use this model to understand how the radio continuum emission from radio-quiet AGNs can affect the measured RLFs of galaxies. We find current methods to exclude AGNs from observational samples result in large fractions of radio-quiet AGNs contaminating the 'star-forming galaxies' selection and a brighter end to the resulting RLFs.We investigate how this affects the infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) and show that AGN contamination can lead to evolution of the IRRC with redshift. Without this contamination, our model predicts a redshift- and stellar mass-independent IRRC, except at the dwarf-galaxy regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies are affected by a variety of factors, both external (field versus cluster/group) and internal [presence of a bar and active galactic nucleus (AGN), morphological type]. In this work, we extend our previous study and apply the |$\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$|  metric to a sample of 11 nearby galaxies with Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer observations. Based on a combination of H α and ultraviolet photometry, |$\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$| is sensitive to star formation time-scales of ∼5–200 Myr and therefore measures the present-day rate of change in the star formation rate (SFR), dSFR/d t. Within this limited galaxy sample, we do not observe systematic variations between the global value of |$\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$| and the presence of an AGN, stellar bar, or group or cluster membership. Within some of the individual galaxies, we, however, observe significant differences in |$\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$| between the arm and interarm regions. In half of the galaxies, the recent SFH of both arm and interarm regions has been very similar. However, in the galaxies with higher bulge-to-total light ratios and earlier morphological type, the SFR is declining more rapidly in the interarm regions. This decline in SFR is not a result of low molecular gas surface density or a decrease in the star formation efficiency, implying that other factors are responsible for this SFR decrease. The interaction between supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback and the circumgalactic medium (CGM) continues to be an open question in galaxy evolution. In our study, we use smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations to explore the impact of SMBH feedback on galactic metal retention and the motion of metals and gas into and through the CGM of L* galaxies. We examine 140 galaxies from the 25 Mpc cosmological volume Romulus25, with stellar masses between log(M */ M ⊙) = 9.5–11.5. We measure the fraction of metals remaining in the interstellar medium (ISM) and CGM of each galaxy and calculate the expected mass of each SMBH based on the M BH– σ relation (Kormendy & Ho 2013). The deviation of each SMBH from its expected mass, Δ M BH, is compared to the potential of its host via σ. We find that SMBHs with accreted mass above M BH– σ are more effective at removing metals from the ISM than undermassive SMBHs in star-forming galaxies. Overall, overmassive SMBHs suppress the total star formation of their host galaxies and more effectively move metals from the ISM into the CGM. However, we see little to no evacuation of gas from the CGM out of their halos, in contrast with other simulations. Finally, we predict that C iv column densities in the CGM of L* galaxies are unlikely to depend on host galaxy SMBH mass. Our results show that the scatter in the low-mass end of the M BH– σ relation may indicate how effective an SMBH is in the local redistribution of mass in its host galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of a search for extended emission-line regions (EELRs) ionized by extant or recently faded active galactic nuclei (AGNs), using [O III] narrow-band imaging and spectroscopic follow-up. The sample includes 198 galaxies in 92 strongly interacting or merging galaxy systems in the range of z  = 0.009–0.0285. Among these, three systems have EELRs extended beyond 10 kpc in projection from the nucleus detected in previous studies. We identify a single new distant emission region, projected 35 kpc from UGC 5941. Our optical spectrum does not detect He II, but its strong-line ratios put this in the same class as securely characterized EELR clouds. The nucleus of UGC 5941 is dominated by recent star formation, preventing detection of any weak ongoing AGN. Overall counts of distant EELRs in this and the previous TELPERION samples give incidence 2–5 per cent depending on galaxy and AGN selection, 20–50 times higher than the Galaxy Zoo EELR survey with its higher surface-brightness threshold and much larger input sample. AGNs in interacting and merging systems have an increased detection rate of 12 ± 6 per cent, while none are detected around non-interacting AGNs. Some of these AGNs are at luminosity low enough to require additional X-ray or far-infrared information to tell whether the EELR ionization level suggests long-term fading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the detection of extended (> 0.5–1 kpc) high-ionization [Mg IV] 4.487 μm (80 eV) emission in four local luminous infrared galaxies observed with JWST/NIRSpec. Excluding the nucleus and outflow of the Type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the sample, we find that the [Mg IV] luminosity is well correlated with that of H recombination lines, which mainly trace star-forming clumps in these objects, and that the [Ar VI] 4.530 μm (75 eV), usually seen in AGN, is undetected. On 100–400 pc scales, the [Mg IV] line profiles are broader (σ([Mg IV]) = 90 ± 25 km s−1) and shifted (Δv up to ±50 km s−1) compared to those of the H recombination lines and lower ionization transitions (e.g., σ(Hu-12) = 57 ± 15 km s−1). The [Mg IV] kinematics follow the large-scale rotating velocity field of these galaxies, and the broad [Mg IV] profiles are compatible with the broad wings detected in the H recombination lines. Based on these observational results, extended highly ionized gas more turbulent than the ambient interstellar medium, possibly a result of ionizing shocks associated with star formation, is the most likely origin of the [Mg IV] emission. We also computed new grids of photoionization and shock models to investigate where the [Mg IV] line originates. Shocks with velocities of 100–130 km s−1 reproduce the observed line ratios and the [Mg IV] luminosity agrees with that expected from the mechanical energy released by supernove (SNe) in these regions. Therefore, these models support shocks induced by SNe as the origin of the [Mg IV] line. Future studies on the stellar feedback from SNe will benefit from the [Mg IV] line that is little affected by obscuration and, in the absence of an AGN, can only be produced by shocks due to its high ionization-potential. The black hole-and-galaxy (BH-galaxy) co-evolution paradigm predicts a phase where most of the star formation (SF) and BH accretion takes place in gas-rich environments, namely, in what are likely to be very obscured conditions. In the first phase of this growth, some of the galactic gas is funnelled toward the centre of the galaxy and is accreted into the supermassive BH, triggering active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity. The large quantity of gas and dust hides the emission and the AGN appears as an obscured (type 2) AGN. The degree of obscuration in type 2 AGNs may even reach values as high as NH > 1024 cm−2 (i.e., Compton-thick, CT). Population synthesis models of the X-ray background (XRB) suggest that a large population of CT-AGN is, in fact, needed to explain the still unresolved XRB emission at energy above 20 keV. In this work, we investigated the properties of 94 [Ne V]3426 Å-selected type 2 AGN in COSMOS at z = 0.6 − 1.2, performing optical-to-far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of COSMOS2020 photometric data to estimate the AGN bolometric luminosity and stellar mass, star formation rate, age of the oldest stars, and molecular gas mass for their host-galaxy. In addition, we performed an X-ray spectral analysis of the 36 X-ray-detected sources to obtain reliable values of the AGN obscuration and intrinsic luminosity, as well as to constrain the AGN properties of the X-ray-undetected sources. We found that more than two-thirds of our sample is composed of very obscured sources (NH > 1023 cm−2), with about 20% of the sources being candidate CT-AGN and half being AGNs in a strong phase of accretion (λEdd > 0.1). We built a mass- and redshift-matched control sample and its comparison with the [Ne V] sample indicates that the latter has a higher fraction of sources within the main sequence of star-forming galaxies and shows little evidence for AGNs quenching the SF. As the two samples have similar amounts of cold gas available to fuel the SF, this difference points towards a higher efficiency in forming stars in the [Ne V]-selected sample. The comparison with the prediction from the in situ co-evolution model suggests that [Ne V] is an effective tool for selecting galaxies in the obscured growth phase of the BH-galaxy co-evolution paradigm. We analyse the radio-to-submillimetre spectral energy distribution (SED) for the central pseudo-bulge of NGC 1365 using archival data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Very Large Array. This analysis shows that free–free emission dominates the continuum emission at 50–120 GHz and produces about 75 per cent of the 103 GHz continuum emission. However, the fraction of 103 GHz continuum emission originating from free–free emission varies significantly among different subregions in the pseudo-bulge, particularly for an outflow from the active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the eastern pseudo-bulge where the synchrotron emission produces half of the 103 GHz continuum emission. Free–free emission also dominates at 103 GHz within the central 400 pc diameter region, but this emission is associated with the AGN rather than star formation. The star formation rate (SFR) within the pseudo-bulge derived from the ALMA free–free emission is 8.9 ± 1.1 M⊙ yr−1. This is comparable to the SFR from the mid-infrared emission but higher than the SFR from the extinction-corrected H α line emission, mainly because the pseudo-bulge is heavily dust obscured. The 1.5 GHz emission yields a comparable SFR for the pseudo-bulge but may have lower SFRs within subregions of the pseudo-bulge because of the diffusion outside of these regions of the electrons producing the synchrotron radiation. We propose that applying a correction factor of 75 per cent to the 80–110 GHz continuum emission could provide valuable estimates of the free–free emission without performing any SED decomposition, which could derive extinction-free SFRs within 20 per cent accuracy. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) contains information on the cumulative effect of galactic outflows over time, generally thought to be caused by feedback from star formation and active galactic nuclei. Observations of such outflows via absorption in CGM gas of quasar sightlines show a significant amount of cold (⁠|${\lesssim}10^4\,{\rm K}$|⁠) gas, which cosmological simulations struggle to reproduce. Here, we use the adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamical code Ramses to investigate the effect of cosmic rays (CR) on the cold gas content of the CGM using three zoom realizations of a z  = 1 star-forming galaxy with supernova mechanical feedback: one with no CR feedback (referred to as no-CR), one with a medium CR diffusion coefficient |$\kappa = 10^{28} \, \rm {cm^{2}\, s^{-1}}$| (CR−κmed), and one with a high rate of diffusion of |$\kappa = 3\times 10^{29} \, \rm {cm^{2}\,\, s^{-1}}$| (CR−κhigh). We find that, for CR−κmed, the effects of CRs are largely confined to the galaxy itself as CRs do not extend far into the CGM. However, for CR−κhigh, the CGM temperature is lowered and the amount of outflowing gas is boosted. Our CR simulations fall short of the observed Mg  ii covering fraction, a tracer of gas at temperatures |${\lesssim}10^4\,{\rm K}$|⁠ , but the CR−κhigh simulation is more in agreement with covering fractions of C  iv and O  vi , which trace higher temperature gas. We have characterized 26 Spitzer/IRAC-selected sources from the SMUVS program that are undetected in the UltraVISTA DR5 H - and/or K s-band images, covering 94 arcmin2 of the COSMOS field, which have deep multiwavelength JWST photometry. We analyzed the JWST/NIRCam imaging from the PRIMER survey and ancillary HST data to reveal the properties of these galaxies from spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We find that the majority of these galaxies are detected by NIRCam at λ < 2 μ m, with only four remaining as near-infrared dropouts in the deeper JWST images. Our results indicate that the UltraVISTA dropouts candidates are primarily located at z > 3 and are characterized by high dust extinctions, with a typical color excess E (B − V) = 0.5 ± 0.3 and stellar mass log (M * / M ⊙) = 9.5 ± 1.0 . Remarkably, ∼75% of these sources show a flux enhancement between the observed photometry and modeled continuum SED that can be attributed to H α emission in the corresponding NIRCam bands. The derived (H α + N [ ii ] + S [ ii ]) rest-frame equivalent widths and H α star formation rates (SFRs) span values ∼100–2200 Å and ∼5–375 M ⊙ yr−1, respectively. The locations of these sources on the SFR– M * plane indicate that 35% of them are starbursts, 40% are main-sequence galaxies, and the remaining 25% are located in the star formation valley. Our sample includes one active galactic nucleus and six submillimeter sources, as revealed from ancillary X-ray and submillimeter photometry. The high dust extinctions combined with the flux boosting from H α emission explain why these sources are relatively bright Spitzer galaxies and yet unidentified in the ultradeep UltraVISTA near-infrared images. Galaxies' stellar masses, gas-phase oxygen abundances (metallicity), and star formation rates (SFRs) obey a series of empirical correlations, most notably the mass–metallicity relation (MZR) and fundamental metallicity relation (FZR), which relates oxygen abundance to a combination of stellar mass and SFR. However, due to the difficulty of measuring oxygen abundances and SFRs in galaxies that host powerful active galactic nuclei (AGN), to date it is unknown to what extent AGN-host galaxies also follow these correlations. In this work, we apply Bayesian methods to the MaNGA integral field spectrographic (IFS) survey that allow us to measure oxygen abundances and SFRs in AGN hosts, and use these measurements to explore how the MZR and FZR differ between galaxies that do and do not host AGN. We find similar MZRs at stellar masses above |$10^{10.5} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠ , but that at lower stellar masses AGN hosts show up to |$\sim 0.2$|  dex higher oxygen abundances. The offset in the FZR is significantly smaller, suggesting that the larger deviation in the MZR is a result of AGN-host galaxies having systematically lower SFRs at fixed stellar mass. However, within the AGN-host sample there is little correlation between SFR and oxygen abundance. These findings support a scenario in which an AGN can halt efficient gas accretion, which drives non-AGN host galaxies to both higher SFR and lower oxygen abundance, resulting in the galaxy evolving off the star-forming main sequence (SFMS). We use the Cosmic Archaeology Tool (CAT) semi-analytical model to explore the contribution of Population (Pop) III/II stars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the galaxy ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function (LF) evolution at 4 ≤ z ≤ 20. We compare in particular with recent JWST data in order to explore the apparent tension between observations and theoretical models in the number density of bright galaxies at z ≳ 10. The model predicts a star formation history dominated by UV faint (M UV > −18) galaxies, with a Pop III contribution of |$\lesssim 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| (⁠|$\lesssim 0.5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) at z ≃ 20 (z ≃ 10). Stars are the primary sources of cosmic reionization, with |$5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\!-\!10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of ionizing photons escaping into the intergalatic medium at 5 ≤ z ≤ 10, while the contribution of unobscured AGNs becomes dominant only at z ≲ 5. The predicted stellar and AGN UV LFs reproduce the observational data at 5 ≲ z ≲ 9–10. At higher redshift, CAT predicts a steeper evolution in the faint-end slope (M UV > –18), and a number density of bright galaxies (M UV ≃ −20) consistent with data at z ∼ 10–11, but smaller by 0.8 dex at z ∼ 12–13, and 1.2 dex at z ∼ 14–16, when compared to the values estimated by recent studies. Including the AGN emission does not affect the above findings, as AGNs contribute at most to |$\lesssim 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the total UV luminosity at M UV < –19 and z ≳ 10. Interestingly, considering a gradual transition in the stellar initial mass function, modulated by metallicity and redshift as suggested by recent simulations, the model agrees with JWST data at z ∼ 12–13, and the disagreement at z ∼ 14–16 is reduced to 0.5 dex. Sub/millimeter galaxies are a key population for the study of galaxy evolution because the majority of star formation at high redshifts occurred in galaxies deeply embedded in dust. To search for this population, we have performed an extensive survey with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), called the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS). This survey covers 133 arcmin2 area and securely detects 180 sources at z ∼ 0.5–6 with a flux limit of ∼0.2 mJy at 1.2 mm. Here, we report the results of multiwavelength spectral energy distribution analysis of the whole ALCS sample, utilizing the observed-frame UV to millimeter photometry. We find that the majority of the ALCS sources lie on the star-forming main sequence, with a smaller fraction showing intense starburst activities. The ALCS sample contains high infrared-excess sources ( IRX = log (L dust / L UV) > 1 ), including two extremely dust-obscured galaxies (IRX > 5). We also confirm that the ALCS sample probes a broader range in lower dust mass than conventional submillimeter galaxy samples in the same redshift range. We identify six heavily obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates that are not detected in the archival Chandra data in addition to the three X-ray AGNs reported by Uematsu et al. (2023). The inferred AGN luminosity density shows a possible excess at z = 2–3 compared with that determined from X-ray surveys below 10 keV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first systematic search for UV signatures from radio source-driven active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback in Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio galaxies. Owing to their characteristic sub-galactic jets (1–20 kpc projected linear sizes), CSS hosts are excellent laboratories for probing galaxy scale feedback via jet-triggered star formation. The sample consists of seven powerful CSS galaxies, and two galaxies host to radio sources >20 kpc as the control, at low to intermediate redshifts (z < 0.6). Our new Hubble Space Telescope images show extended UV continuum emission in six out of seven CSS galaxies, with five CSS hosts exhibiting UV knots cospatial and aligned along the radio-jet axis. Young (≲ 10 Myr), massive (≳ 5 M ⊙) stellar populations are likely to be the dominant source of the blue excess emission in radio galaxies at these redshifts. Hence, the radio-aligned UV regions could be attributed to jet-induced starbursts. Lower near-UV star formation rates compared to other indicators suggest low scattered AGN light contribution to the observed UV. Dust attenuation of UV emission appears unlikely from high internal extinction correction estimates in most sources. Comparison with evolutionary synthesis models shows that our observations are consistent with recent (∼1−8 Myr old) star-forming activity likely triggered by current or an earlier episode of radio emission, or by a confined radio source that has frustrated growth, due to a dense environment. While follow-up spectroscopic and polarized light observations are needed to constrain the activity-related components in the observed UV, the detection of jet-induced star formation is a confirmation of an important prediction of the jet feedback paradigm. Supermassive black holes (SMBH) are believed to influence galaxy evolution through AGN (active galactic nuclei) feedback. Galaxy mergers are key processes of galaxy formation that lead to AGN activity and star formation. The relative contribution of AGN feedback and mergers to star formation is not yet well understood. In radio-loud objects, AGN outflows are dominated by large jets. However, in radio-quiet objects, outflows are more complex and involve jet, wind, and radiation. In this review, we discuss the signatures of AGN feedback through the alignment of radio and UV emissions. Current research on AGN feedback is discussed, along with a few examples of studies such as the galaxy merger system MRK 212, the radio-quiet AGN NGC 2639, and the radio-loud system Centaurus A. Multi-frequency observations of MRK 212 indicate the presence of dual AGN, as well as feedback-induced star-forming UV clumps. The fourth episode of AGN activity was detected in radio observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2639, which also showed a central cavity of 6 kpc radius in CO and UV maps. This indicates that multi-epoch jets of radio-quiet AGN can blow out cold molecular gas, which can further reduce star formation in the center of the galaxies. Recent UV observations of Cen A have revealed two sets of stellar population in the northern star-forming region, which may have two different origins. Recent studies have shown that there is evidence that both positive and negative feedback can be present in galaxies at different scales and times. High-resolution, multi-band observations of large samples of different types of AGN and their host galaxies are important for understanding the two types of AGN feedback and their effect on the host galaxies. In this work, we use hydrodynamical simulations to explore the effects of kinetic active galactic nuclei (AGN) jet feedback on the progression and outcome of the major merger of two isolated, gas-rich galaxies. We present simulations that use the moving-mesh code arepo to follow the progression of the merger through the first passage and up to the final coalescence, modelling the black holes at the centres of both of the merging galaxies using our prescription for black hole accretion via an α-disc and feedback in the form of a spin-driven jet. We find that the jets drive large-scale, multiphase outflows which launch large quantities of cold gas out to distances greater than 100 kpc and with velocities that reach |$\sim 2500 \, {\rm km \, s^{-1}}$|⁠. Gas in the outflows that decelerates, cools, and falls back on the galaxies can provide a rich source of fuel for the black hole, leading to intense episodes of jet activity in which the jet can become significantly misaligned. The presence of AGN jets affects the growth of the stellar component: star formation is moderately suppressed at all times during the merger and the peak of the star formation rate, attained during the final coalescence of the galaxies, is reduced by a factor of ∼2. Analysis of simulations such as these will play a central role in making precise predictions for multimessenger investigations of dual radio-AGN, which next-generation observational facilities such as LISA, Athena and SKA will make possible. We have used the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard AstroSat to study star formation in a sample of nine dual nuclei galaxies with separations ⪅ 11 kpc, which is an expected outcome of galaxy mergers. To minimize the contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) emission, we have used mid-IR colour cut-offs and masked the AGN-dominated nuclei. The UV continuum slope (β) is used to calculate the internal extinction (A V ) which ranges from 0.53 to 4.04 in the FUV band and 0.44 to 3.10 in the NUV band for the sample. We have detected 1−20 star-forming clumps in our sample galaxies. The extinction-corrected total FUV star formation rate (SFR) ranges from ∼0.35 to ∼32 M⊙ yr−1. Our analyses of A V , specific SFR (sSFR) show that dual nuclei sources are associated with dusty, star-forming galaxies. The FUV − NUV colour maps show redder colour in the nuclear and disc regions while bluer colour is observed in the outskirts of most galaxies which can be due to embedded dust or different stellar populations. We have found some signatures of possible stellar/AGN feedback like a ring of star formation, a redder ring around blue nuclei, etc. However, further observations are required to confirm this. We use new 144 MHz observations over 5634 deg2 from the LOFAR (Low Frequency Array) Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) to compile the largest sample of uniformly selected, spectroscopically confirmed quasars from the 14th data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR14). Using the classical definition of radio loudness, R = log (L 1.4GHz/ Li), we identify 3697 radio-loud (RL) and 111 132 radio-quiet (RQ) sources at 0.6 < z < 3.4. To study their properties, we develop a new rest-frame spectral stacking algorithm, designed with forthcoming massively multiplexed spectroscopic surveys in mind, and use it to create high signal-to-noise composite spectra of each class, matched in redshift and absolute i -band magnitude. We show that RL quasars have redder continuum and enhanced [O  ii ] emission than their RQ counterparts. These results persist when additionally matching in black hole mass, suggesting that this parameter is not the defining factor in making a quasi-stellar object (QSO) RL. We find that these features are not gradually varying as a function of radio loudness, but are maintained even when probing deeper into the RQ population, indicating that a clear-cut division in radio loudness is not apparent. Upon examining the star formation rates (SFRs) inferred from the [O  ii ] emission line, with the contribution from active galactic nucleus removed using the [Ne  v ] line, we find that RL quasars have a significant excess of star formation relative to RQ quasars out to z = 1.9 at least. Given our findings, we suggest that RL sources either preferably reside in gas-rich systems with rapidly spinning black holes, or represent an earlier obscured phase of QSO evolution. With two central galaxies engaged in a major merger and a remarkable chain of 19 young stellar superclusters wound around them in projection, the galaxy cluster SDSS J1531+3414 (z = 0.335) offers an excellent laboratory to study the interplay between mergers, active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback, and star formation. New Chandra X-ray imaging reveals rapidly cooling hot (T ∼ 106 K) intracluster gas, with two "wings" forming a concave density discontinuity near the edge of the cool core. LOFAR 144 MHz observations uncover diffuse radio emission strikingly aligned with the "wings," suggesting that the "wings" are actually the opening to a giant X-ray supercavity. The steep radio emission is likely an ancient relic of one of the most energetic AGN outbursts observed, with 4 pV > 1061 erg. To the north of the supercavity, GMOS detects warm (T ∼ 104 K) ionized gas that enshrouds the stellar superclusters but is redshifted up to +800 km s−1 with respect to the southern central galaxy. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array detects a similarly redshifted ∼1010 M ⊙ reservoir of cold (T ∼ 102 K) molecular gas, but it is offset from the young stars by ∼1–3 kpc. We propose that the multiphase gas originated from low-entropy gas entrained by the X-ray supercavity, attribute the offset between the young stars and the molecular gas to turbulent intracluster gas motions, and suggest that tidal interactions stimulated the "beads-on-a-string" star formation morphology. We present new ALMA CO(2-1) observations tracing |$2.2 \times 10^{10}\, \textnormal {M}_{\odot }$| of molecular gas in Abell 2390's brightest cluster galaxy, where half the gas is located in a one-sided plume extending 15 kpc out from the galaxy centre. This molecular gas has a smooth and positive velocity gradient, and is receding 250 km s−1 faster at its farthest point than at the galaxy centre. To constrain the plume's origin, we analyse our new observations alongside existing X-ray, optical, and radio data. We consider the possibility that the plume is a jet-driven outflow with lifting aided by jet-inflated X-ray bubbles, is a trail of gas stripped from the main galaxy by ram pressure, or is formed of more recently cooled and infalling gas. The galaxy's star formation and gas cooling rate suggest the lifespan of its molecular gas may be low compared with the plume's age – which would favour a recently cooled plume. Molecular gas in close proximity to the active galactic nucleus is also indicated by 250 km s−1 wide CO(2-1) absorption against the radio core, as well as previously detected CO(1-0) and H  i absorption. This absorption is optically thick and has a line-of-sight velocity towards the galaxy centre of 200 km s−1. We discuss simple models to explain its origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we revisit the relationship between [O  iii ] line width w 90 (as the indicator of active galactic nucleus outflow velocity) and the radio emission in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) by employing a large sample of Type I quasars (∼37 000) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 16. By median stacking the radio images (to include the dominant fraction of individually radio non-detected RQQs) of Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array Sky Survey for subsamples of RQQs with different w 90, our study demonstrates that the correlation between w 90 and radio emission in our SDSS RQQs is significant, and remains solid after controlling the effects of black hole mass, quasar luminosity, Eddington ratio, and redshift. This intrinsic link supports that the [O  iii ] outflows in quasars, most likely resulting from wide-angled sub-relativistic quasar winds launched from the accretion disc, could make a dominant contribution to radio emission in the general RQQs. Alternatively, the correlation may be attributed to low-power jets in RQQs if they are ubiquitous and could efficiently enhance the [O  iii ] width through interacting with the interstellar medium. Meanwhile, the star formation rates traced by the flux ratio of [Ne  v ]/[O  ii ] emission lines display no dependence on w 90 after controlling the effects of black hole mass, quasar luminosity, Eddington ratio, and redshift. This suggests that the stronger radio emission in RQQs with larger w 90 could not be attributed to outflow-enhanced (positive feedback) star formation in the hosts. However, this also indicates that the outflows, though exhibiting robust correlation with radio power, produce neither positive nor negative feedback to the star formation in their hosts. We present an improved study of the relation between supermassive black hole growth and their host galaxy properties in the local Universe (z < 0.33). To this end, we build an extensive sample combining spectroscopic measurements of star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass from Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with specific Black Hole accretion rate (sBHAR, |$\lambda _{\mathrm{sBHAR}} \propto L_{\rm X}/\mathcal {M}_{\ast }$|⁠) derived from the XMM–Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue (3XMM–DR8) and the Chandra Source Catalogue (CSC2.0). We find that the sBHAR probability distribution for both star-forming and quiescent galaxies has a power-law shape peaking at log λsBHAR ∼ −3.5 and declining towards lower sBHAR in all stellar mass ranges. This finding confirms the decrease of active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in the local Universe compared to higher redshifts. We observe a significant correlation between |$\log \, \lambda _{\rm sBHAR}$| and |$\log \, {\rm SFR}$| in almost all stellar mass ranges, but the relation is shallower compared to higher redshifts, indicating a reduced availability of accreting material in the local Universe. At the same time, the BHAR-to-SFR ratio for star-forming galaxies strongly correlates with stellar mass, supporting the scenario where both AGN activity and stellar formation primarily depend on the stellar mass via fuelling by a common gas reservoir. Conversely, this ratio remains constant for quiescent galaxies, possibly indicating the existence of the different physical mechanisms responsible for AGN fuelling or different accretion mode in quiescent galaxies. The Revised Third Cambridge Catalogue of Radio Sources (3CR) has been instrumental in the study of active galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) for the past sixty years. The catalogue's publication led to the discovery of quasars and has shaped our understanding of extragalactic radio sources, including their morphologies, energy sources, and host galaxies. Extragalactic 3CR sources can be classified as high-power, efficiently accreting radio galaxies and quasars, or low-power, inefficiently accreting radio galaxies. Jets emitted by AGN can have a significant impact on the surrounding host galaxy, influencing star formation rates and overall structure. Recent studies have shown that every galaxy emits radio waves connected to stellar processes, challenging the distinction between radio-loud and radio-quiet galaxies. We use VLT-MUSE integral field unit data to study the ionized gas physical properties and kinematics as well as the stellar populations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 232 as an opportunity to understand the role of AGN feedback on star formation. The data cover a field of view of 60 × 60 arcsec2 at a spatial resolution of ∼850 pc. The emission-line profiles have been fitted with two Gaussian components, one associated to the emission of the gas in the disc and the other due to a bi-conical outflow. The spectral synthesis suggests a predominantly old stellar population with ages exceeding 2 Gyr, with the largest contributions seen at the nucleus and decreasing outwards. Meanwhile, the young and intermediate age stellar populations exhibit a positive gradient with increasing radius and a circum-nuclear star-forming ring with radius of ∼0.5 kpc traced by stars younger than 20 Myr, is observed. This, along with the fact that AGN and SF dominated regions present similar gaseous oxygen abundances, suggests a shared reservoir feeding both star formation and the AGN. We have estimated a maximum outflow rate in ionized gas of ∼1.26 M⊙ yr−1 observed at a distance of ∼560 pc from the nucleus. The corresponding maximum kinetic power of the outflow is ∼3.4 × 1041 erg s−1. Using the SWIFT simulation code, we compare the effects of different forms of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) feedback in idealized galaxy groups and clusters. We first present a physically motivated model of black hole (BH) spin evolution and a numerical implementation of thermal isotropic feedback (representing the effects of energy-driven winds) and collimated kinetic jets that they launch at different accretion rates. We find that kinetic jet feedback is more efficient at quenching star formation in the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) than thermal isotropic feedback, while simultaneously yielding cooler cores in the intracluster medium (ICM). A hybrid model with both types of AGN feedback yields moderate star formation rates, while having the coolest cores. We then consider a simplified implementation of AGN feedback by fixing the feedback efficiencies and the jet direction, finding that the same general conclusions hold. We vary the feedback energetics (the kick velocity and the heating temperature), the fixed efficiencies and the type of energy (kinetic versus thermal) in both the isotropic and the jet case. The isotropic case is largely insensitive to these variations. On the other hand, jet feedback must be kinetic in order to be efficient at quenching. We also find that it is much more sensitive to the choice of energy per feedback event (the jet velocity), as well as the efficiency. We present a study of molecular gas, traced via CO (3–2) from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data, of four z < 0.2, 'radio quiet', type 2 quasars (Lbol ∼ 1045.3–1046.2 erg s−1; L |$_{\mathrm{1.4\, GHz}}\sim 10^{23.7}\!-\!10^{24.3}$|   W  Hz−1). Targets were selected to have extended radio lobes (≥ 10 kpc), and compact, moderate-power jets (1–10 kpc; P jet ∼ 1043.2–1043.7 erg s−1). All targets show evidence of central molecular outflows, or injected turbulence, within the gas discs (traced via high-velocity wing components in CO emission-line profiles). The inferred velocities (V out = 250–440 km s−1) and spatial scales (0.6–1.6 kpc), are consistent with those of other samples of luminous low-redshift active galactic nuclei. In two targets, we observe extended molecular gas structures beyond the central discs, containing 9–53  per cent of the total molecular gas mass. These structures tend to be elongated, extending from the core, and wrap-around (or along) the radio lobes. Their properties are similar to the molecular gas filaments observed around radio lobes of, mostly 'radio loud', brightest cluster galaxies. They have the following: projected distances of 5–13 kpc; bulk velocities of 100–340 km s−1; velocity dispersion of 30–130 km s−1; inferred mass outflow rates of 4–20 M⊙ yr−1; and estimated kinetic powers of 1040.3–1041.7 erg s−1. Our observations are consistent with simulations that suggest moderate-power jets can have a direct (but modest) impact on molecular gas on small scales, through direct jet–cloud interactions. Massive, starbursting galaxies in the early Universe represent some of the most extreme objects in the study of galaxy evolution. One such source is HFLS3 (z ∼ 6.34), which was originally identified as an extreme starburst galaxy with mild gravitational magnification (μ ∼ 2.2). Here, we present new observations of HFLS3 with the JWST/NIRSpec integral field unit in both low (PRISM/CLEAR; R ∼ 100) and high spectral resolution (G395H/290LP; R ∼ 2700), with high spatial resolution (∼0.1″) and sensitivity. Using a combination of the NIRSpec data and a new lensing model with accurate spectroscopic redshifts, we find that the 3″ × 3″ field is crowded, with a lensed arc (C, z = 6.3425 ± 0.0002), two galaxies to the south (S1 and S2, z = 6.3592 ± 0.0001), two galaxies to the west (W1, z = 6.3550 ± 0.0001; W2, z = 6.3628 ± 0.0001), and two low-redshift interlopers (G1, z = 3.4806 ± 0.0001; G2, z = 2.00 ± 0.01). We present spectral fits and morpho-kinematic maps for each bright emission line (e.g. [OIII]λ5007, Hα, and [NII]λ6584) from the R2700 data for all sources except G2 (whose spectral lines fall outside the observed wavelengths of the R2700 data). From a line ratio analysis, we find that the galaxies in component C are likely powered by star formation, though we cannot rule out or confirm the presence of active galactic nuclei in the other high-redshift sources. We performed gravitational lens modelling, finding evidence for a two-source composition of the lensed central object and a magnification factor (μ = 2.1 − 2.4) comparable to findings of previous work. The projected distances and velocity offsets of each galaxy suggest that they will merge within the next ∼1 Gyr. Finally, we examined the dust extinction-corrected SFRHα of each z > 6 source, finding that the total star formation (510 ± 140 M⊙ yr−1, magnification-corrected) is distributed across the six z ∼ 6.34 − 6.36 objects over a region of diameter ∼11 kpc. Altogether, this suggests that HFLS3 is not a single starburst galaxy, but instead a merging system of star-forming galaxies in the epoch of reionisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The usual approach to classify the ionizing source using optical spectroscopy is based on the use of diagnostic diagrams that compare the relative strength of pairs of collisitional metallic lines (e.g., [O III] and [N II]) to recombination hydrogen lines (e.g., Hβ and Hα). Despite it having been accepted as the standard procedure, it presents known problems, including confusion regimes and/or limitations related to the required signal-to-noise (S/N) of the emission lines involved. These problems not only affect our intrinsic understanding of the interstellar medium and its properties, but also the fundamental galaxy properties, such as the star formation rate and the oxygen abundance. This raises key questions related to the fraction of active galactic nuclei and other essential parameters. Aims. We attempt to minimize the problems introduced by the use of these diagrams, in particular, their implementation when the available information is limited due to either the fact that not all lines are available or they do not have the required S/N value. Methods. We explored the existing alternatives in the literature to minimize the confusion among different ionizing sources. We have proposed a new, simple diagram that uses the equivalent width and the velocity dispersion from one single emission line, Hα, to classify the ionizing sources. Results. We used aperture-limited and spatially resolved spectroscopic data from the nearby Universe (z ∼ 0.01) to demonstrate that the new diagram, which we have named WHaD, segregates the different ionizing sources in a more efficient way than earlier procedures. A new set of regions have been defined in this diagram to select among different ionizing sources. Conclusions. The new proposed diagram is well positioned to assist in determining the ionizing source when only Hα is available or when the S/N of the emission lines is too low to obtain reliable fluxes for the weakest emission lines in classical diagnostic diagrams (e.g., Hβ). We use the simba galaxy formation simulation suite to explore anisotropies in the properties of circumgalactic gas that result from accretion and feedback processes. We particularly focus on the impact of bipolar active galactic nuclei (AGNs) jet feedback as implemented in simba  , which quenches galaxies and has a dramatic effect on large-scale gas properties. We show that jet feedback at low redshifts is most common in the stellar mass range (1–5) × 1010 M⊙, so we focus on galaxies with active jets in this mass range. In comparison to runs without jet feedback, jets cause lower densities and higher temperatures along the galaxy minor axis (simba jet direction) at radii |$\gtrsim 0.5r_{200c}-4r_{200c}$| and beyond. This effect is less apparent at higher or lower stellar masses, and is strongest within green valley galaxies. The metallicity also shows strong anisotropy out to large scales, driven by star formation feedback. We find substantially stronger anisotropy at |$\lesssim 0.5r_{200c}$|⁠ , but this also exists in runs with no explicit feedback, suggesting that it is due to anisotropic accretion. Finally, we explore anisotropy in the bulk radial motion of the gas, finding that both star formation and AGN wind feedback contribute to pushing the gas outwards along the minor axis at |$\lesssim 1$| Mpc, but AGN jet feedback further causes bulk outflow along the minor axis out to several Mpc, which drives quenching via gas starvation. Despite powerful X-ray emission, some active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are known to either lack optical emission lines (so-called 'optically dull' AGNs) or have lines that fall on the star-forming branch of the Baldwin–Phillips–Terlevich (BPT) diagram ('misclassified' AGNs). Aperture effects have been proposed to explain such atypical spectra, especially when based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS; 3 arcsec) fibres. We use observations from VLT-MUSE with Adaptive Optics to explore the spatially resolved optical emission line properties of four optically dull and one misclassified X-ray AGN candidates. VLT-MUSE IFU spectra allow us to investigate the extent to which the aperture size affects the emission line measurements. The optically dull AGNs become detectable in deeper VLT-MUSE spectroscopic apertures having the same size (3 arcsec) as SDSS fibres, suggesting no AGN is truly lineless. However, in no case does the line become more detectable as the aperture decreases, as would be expected if dilution by strong continuum was responsible for making the lines appear weak. We also show that the misclassified X-ray AGN retains the same position on the BPT diagram in smaller apertures (down to 0.5 arcsec), demonstrating that its misclassification is not the result of the dilution by H  ii regions. Thus, we conclude that continuum swamping or star formation dilution, i.e. aperture effects, are not responsible for atypical lines. Rather, the AGN lines are intrinsically weak. We present a simple model for low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (LLAGN) feedback through winds produced by a hot accretion flow. The wind carries considerable energy and deposits it on the host galaxy at kiloparsec scales and beyond, heating the galactic gas and thereby quenching star formation. Our model predicts that the typical LLAGN can quench more than 10 per cent of star formation in its host galaxy. We find that long-lived LLAGN winds from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses ≥108 M⊙ and mass accretion rates |$\dot{M} \gt 10^{-3} \dot{M}_{\rm Edd}\ (0.002\,{\rm M}_{\odot }\,\mathrm{ yr}^{-1})$| can prevent gas collapse and significantly quench galactic star formation compared to a scenario without AGNs, if the wind persists over 1 Myr. For sustained wind production over time-scales of 10 Myr or longer, SMBHs with 108 M⊙ or larger masses have important feedback effects with |$\dot{M} \gt 10^{-4} \dot{M}_{\rm Edd}\ (0.0002\,{\rm M}_{\odot }\, \mathrm{ yr}^{-1})$|⁠. We present a study of the morphology of star formation and the associated nuclear activity in a sample of eight closely interacting southern galaxies, which are in different stages of interaction, starting with nearly merged nuclei that have one prominent bulge to more widely spaced interacting galaxies. We have used far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT), near-Infrared observations from the Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF) telescope, and archival optical data from the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectrograph. Analysing resolved stellar populations across the disc of the interacting galaxies can provide unique insights into how interactions affect galaxy properties, such as morphology, star formation rates, and chemical composition. We take advantage of the unprecedented capabilities of MUSE and UVIT to carry out a highly detailed spatially and spectrally resolved study of star formation rate, star formation histories, metallicity, and active galactic nucleus activity in the sample of eight interacting galaxies that are in different stages of interaction. Most of our sample galaxies are gas-rich and show evidence of recent, massive star formation in tidal tails, rings, and spiral arms. This is evident from their FUV and Hα emissions, which trace young, massive star-forming regions. We compared the star formation rate in the barred and unbarred galaxies in our sample and found that the barred galaxies do not show significant enhancement in star formation rate or large-scale difference in star formation morphology compared to unbarred galaxies. Recent cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have produced populations of numerical galaxies whose global star-forming properties are in good agreement with those of observed galaxies. Proper modeling of energetic feedback from supernovae and active galactic nuclei is critical to the ability of simulations to reproduce observed galaxy properties, and historically, such modeling has proven to be a challenge. Here, we analyze the local properties of central and satellite galaxies in the z = 0 snapshot of the TNG100 simulation as a test of feedback models. We generate a face-on projection of stellar particles in TNG100 galaxies, from which we demonstrate the existence of a resolved star-forming main sequence (ΣSFR–Σ* relation) with a slope and normalization that is in reasonable agreement with previous studies. We also present radial profiles of various galaxy populations for two parameters: the distance from the resolved main-sequence line (ΔΣSFR) and the luminosity-weighted stellar age (Age L ). We find that, on average, high-mass central and satellite galaxies quench from the inside out, while low-mass central and satellite galaxies have similar, flatter profiles. Overall, we find that, with the exception of the starburst population, the TNG100 feedback models yield simulated galaxies whose radial distributions of Age L and ΔΣSFR agree with those of observed galaxies. Recent observations indicate that galactic outflows are ubiquitous in high-redshift (high- z) galaxies, including normal star-forming galaxies, quasar hosts, and dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). However, the impact of outflows on the evolution of their hosts is still an open question. Here, we analyse the star-formation histories and galactic outflow properties of galaxies in massive haloes (⁠|$10^{12}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }\ \lt\ M_{\rm vir}\ \lt\ 5\times 10^{12}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠) at z ≳ 5.5 in three zoom-in cosmological simulations from the MassiveFIRE suite, as part of the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. The simulations were run with the FIRE-2 model, which does not include feedback from active galactic nuclei. The simulated galaxies resemble z > 4 DSFGs, with star-formation rates of |$\sim\!{1000}\ {\rm M}_{\odot }\, \rm yr^{-1}$| and molecular gas masses of M mol ∼ 1010 M⊙. However, the simulated galaxies are characterized by higher circular velocities than those observed in high- z DSFGs. The mass loading factors from stellar feedback are of the order of ∼0.1, implying that stellar feedback is inefficient in driving galactic outflows and gas is consumed by star formation on much shorter time-scales than it is expelled from the interstellar medium. We also find that stellar feedback is highly inefficient in self-regulating star formation in this regime, with an average integrated star formation efficiency (SFE) per dynamical time of 30 per cent. Finally, compared with FIRE-2 galaxies hosted in similarly massive haloes at lower redshift, we find lower mass loading factors and higher SFEs in the high- z sample. We examine the quenching characteristics of 328 isolated dwarf galaxies 10 8 < M star / M ⊙ < 10 10 within the Romulus25 cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Using mock-observation methods, we identify isolated dwarf galaxies with quenched star formation and make direct comparisons to the quenched fraction in the NASA Sloan Atlas (NSA). Similar to other cosmological simulations, we find a population of quenched, isolated dwarf galaxies below M star < 109 M ⊙ not detected within the NSA. We find that the presence of massive black holes (MBHs) in Romulus25 is largely responsible for the quenched, isolated dwarfs, while isolated dwarfs without an MBH are consistent with quiescent fractions observed in the field. Quenching occurs between z = 0.5–1, during which the available supply of star-forming gas is heated or evacuated by MBH feedback. Mergers or interactions seem to play little to no role in triggering the MBH feedback. At low stellar masses, M star ≲ 109.3 M ⊙, quenching proceeds across several Gyr as the MBH slowly heats up gas in the central regions. At higher stellar masses, M star ≳ 109.3 M ⊙, quenching occurs rapidly within 1 Gyr, with the MBH evacuating gas from the central few kpc of the galaxy and driving it to the outskirts of the halo. Our results indicate the possibility of substantial star formation suppression via MBH feedback within dwarf galaxies in the field. On the other hand, the apparent overquenching of dwarf galaxies due to MBH suggests that higher-resolution and/or better modeling is required for MBHs in dwarfs, and quenched fractions offer the opportunity to constrain current models. I present an analysis of the JWST NIRSpec data of SMACS 0723 released as Early Release Observations. As part of this three new redshifts are provided, bringing the total of reliable redshifts to 14. I propose a modification to the direct abundance determination method that reduces sensitivity to flux calibration uncertainties by a factor of ∼3 and show that the resulting abundances are in good agreement with Bayesian photoionization models of the rest-frame optical spectrum. I also show that 6355 is most likely a narrow-line active galactic nucleus (AGN) with |$M_*\lt 10^9\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| at z  = 7.66 and argue that 10 612 might also have an AGN contribution to its flux through comparison to photoionization models and low-redshift analogues. Under the assumption that the lines come from star formation, I find that the galaxies have gas depletion times of ∼107 yr, comparable to similar galaxies locally. I also identify a population of possibly shock-dominated galaxies at z < 3, whose near-IR emission lines plausibly come nearly all from shocks and discuss their implications. I close with a discussion of the potential for biases in the determination of the mass–metallicity relation using samples defined by detected [O  iii ]4363 and show using low- z galaxies that this can lead to biases of up to 0.5 dex with a systematic trend with mass. We exploit a sample of 80 000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey central galaxies to investigate the effect of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback on their evolution. We trace the demographics of optically selected AGN (Seyferts) as a function of their internal properties and environment. We find that the preeminence of AGN as the dominant ionizing mechanism increases with stellar mass, overtaking star formation for galaxies with M stellar ≥ 1010 M⊙. The AGN fraction changes systematically with the galaxies' star formation activity. Within the blue cloud, this fraction increases as star formation activity declines, reaching a maximum near the green valley (⁠|${\sim} 17 \pm 4~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠), followed by a decrease as the galaxies transition into the red sequence. This systematic trend provides evidence that AGN feedback plays a key role in regulating and suppressing star formation. In general, Seyfert central galaxies achieve an early-type morphology while they still host residual star formation. This suggests that, in all environments, the morphology of Seyfert galaxies evolves from late- to early-type before their star formation is fully quenched. Stellar mass plays an important role in this morphological transformation: while low-mass systems tend to emerge from the green valley with an elliptical morphology (T-Type ∼ −2.5 ± 0.7), their high-mass counterparts maintain a spiral morphology deeper into the red sequence. In high-stellar mass centrals, the fraction of Seyferts increases from early- to late-type galaxies, indicating that AGN feedback may be linked with the morphology and its transformation. Our analysis further suggests that AGN are fuelled by their own host halo gas reservoir, but when in group centrals can also increase their gas reservoir via interactions with satellite galaxies. We present a novel algorithm to detect double nuclei galaxies (DNG) called Gothic (G raph-b O os T ed iterated HI ll C limbing) – that detects whether a given image of a galaxy has two or more closely separated nuclei. Our aim is to test for the presence of dual/multiple active galactic nuclei (AGN) in galaxies that visually represent a DNG. Although galaxy mergers are common, the detection of dual AGN is rare. Their detection is very important as they help us understand the formation of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries, SMBH growth and AGN feedback effects in multiple nuclei systems. There is thus a need for an algorithm to do a systematic survey of existing imaging data for the discovery of DNGs and dual AGNs. We have tested Gothic on an established sample of DNGs with a 100 per cent detection rate and subsequently conducted a blind search of 1 million SDSS DR16 galaxies (with spectroscopic data available) lying in the redshift range of z  = 0 to 0.75. From the list of candidate DNGs found, we have detected 159 dual AGNs, of which 2 are triple AGN systems. Our results show that dual AGNs are not common, and triple AGN even rarer. The colour (u–r) magnitude plots of the DNGs indicate that star formation is quenched as the nuclei come closer and as the AGN fraction increases.
