A neutron star (NS) accreting matter from a companion star in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) system can spin up to become a millisecond pulsar (MSP). Properties of many such MSP systems are known, which is excellent for probing fundamental aspects of NS physics when modelled using the theoretical computation of NS LMXB evolution. Here, we systematically compute the long-term evolution of NS, binary, and companion parameters for NS LMXBs using the stellar evolution code mesa. We consider the baryonic to gravitational mass conversion to calculate the NS mass evolution and show its cruciality for the realistic computation of some parameters. With computations using many combinations of parameter values, we find the general nature of the complex NS spin frequency (⁠|$\nu$|⁠) evolution, which depends on various parameters, including accretion rate, fractional mass-loss from the system, and companion star magnetic braking. Further, we utilize our results to precisely match some main observed parameters, such as |$\nu$|⁠ , orbital period (⁠|$P_{\rm orb}$|⁠), etc. of four accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs). By providing the |$\nu$|⁠ , |$P_{\rm orb}$|⁠ , and the companion mass spaces for NS LMXB evolution, we indicate the distribution and plausible evolution of a few other AMXPs. We also discuss the current challenges in explaining the parameters of AMXP sources with brown dwarf companions and indicate the importance of modelling the transient accretion in LMXBs as a possible solution. We present the first X-ray observation of the energetic millisecond pulsar binary PSR J1431−4715, performed with XMM-Newton and complemented with fast optical multi-band photometry acquired with the ULTRACAM instrument at ESO-NTT. It is found as a faint X-ray source without a significant orbital modulation. This contrasts with the majority of systems that instead display substantial X-ray orbital variability. The X-ray spectrum is dominated by non-thermal emission and, due to the lack of orbital modulation, does not favour an origin in an intrabinary shock between the pulsar and companion star wind. While thermal emission from the neutron star polar cap cannot be excluded in the soft X-rays, the dominance of synchrotron emission favours an origin in the pulsar magnetosphere that we describe at both X-ray and gamma-ray energies with a synchro-curvature model. The optical multi-colour light curve folded at the 10.8 h orbital period is double-humped and dominated by ellipsoidal effects, but also affected by irradiation. The ULTRACAM light curves are fit with several models encompassing direct heating and a cold spot, or heat redistribution after irradiation either through convection or convection plus diffusion. Despite the inability to constrain the best irradiation models, the fits provide consistent system parameters, giving an orbital inclination of 59 ± 6° and a distance of 3.1 ± 0.3 kpc. The companion is found to be an F-type star, underfilling its Roche lobe (fRL = 73 ± 4%) with a mass of 0.20 ± 0.04 M⊙, confirming the redback status, but hotter than the majority of redbacks. The stellar dayside and nightside temperatures of 7500 K and 7400 K, respectively, indicate a weak irradiation effect on the companion, likely due to its high intrinsic luminosity. Context. PSR J1618−3921 is one of five known millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in eccentric orbits (eMPSs) located in the Galactic plane, whose formation is poorly understood. Earlier studies of these objects revealed significant discrepancies between observations and predictions from standard binary evolution scenarios of pulsar-helium white dwarf (HeWD) binaries, especially in the case of PSR J0955−6150, for which mass measurements ruled out most eMSP formation models. Aims. We aim to measure the masses of the pulsar and its companion, and constrain the orbital configuration of PSR J1618−3921. This facilitates understanding similarities among eMSPs and could offer hints as to their formation mechanism. Methods. We conducted observations with the L-band receiver of the MeerKAT radio telescope and the UWL receiver of the Parkes Murriyang radio telescope between 2019 and 2021. These data were added to archival Parkes and Nançay observations. We performed a full analysis on this joint data set with a timing baseline of 23 years. We also used the data from recent observations to give a brief account of the emission properties of J1618−3921, including a rotating vector model (RVM) fit of the linear polarisation position angle of the pulsar. Results. From the timing analysis, we measure a small but significant proper motion of the pulsar. The long timing baseline allowed for a highly significant measurement of the rate of advance of periastron of ω̇ = (0.00145±0.00010)°yr−1. Despite the tenfold improvement in timing precision from MeerKAT observations, we can only report a low-significance detection of the orthometric Shapiro delay parameters, h3 = 2.70−1.47+2.07 μs and ς = 0.68−0.09+0.13. Under the assumption of the validity of general relativity (GR), the self-consistent combination of these three parameters leads to mass estimates of the total and individual masses in the binary of Mtot = 1.42−0.19+0.20 M⊙, Mc = 0.20−0.03+0.11 M⊙, and Mp = 1.20−0.20+0.19 M⊙. We detect an unexpected change in the orbital period of Ṗb = −2.26−0.33+0.35 × 10−12, that is an order of magnitude larger and carries an opposite sign to what is expected from the Galactic acceleration and the Shklovskii effect, which are a priori the only non-negligible contributions expected for Ṗb. We also detect a significant second derivative of the spin frequency, f̈. The RVM fit reveals a viewing angle of ζ = (111 ± 1)°. Furthermore, we report an unexpected, abrupt change in the mean pulse profile in June 2021 of unknown origin. Conclusions. We propose that the anomalous Ṗb and f̈ we measure for J1618−3921 indicate an additional varying acceleration due to a nearby mass. The J1618−3921 binary system is likely part of a hierarchical triple, but with the third component much farther away than the outer component of the MSP in a triple star system, PSR J0337+1715. This finding suggests that at least some eMSPs might have formed in triple star systems. Although the uncertainties are large, the binary companion mass is consistent with the Pb − MWD relation, which has been verified for circular HeWD binaries and also for the two HeWDs in the PSR J0337+1715 system. Future regular observations with the MeerKAT telescope will, due to the further extension of the timing baseline, improve the measurement of Ṗb and f̈. Accreting neutron stars (NSs) are expected to emit a redshifted 2.2 MeV line due to the capture of neutrons produced through the spallation processes of 4He and heavier ions in their atmospheres. Detecting this emission would offer an independent method for constraining the equation of state of NSs and provide valuable insights into nuclear reactions occurring in extreme gravitational and magnetic environments. Typically, a higher mass accretion rate is expected to result in a higher 2.2 MeV line intensity. However, when the mass accretion rate approaches the critical threshold, the accretion flow is decelerated by the radiative force, leading to a less efficient production of free neutrons and a corresponding drop in the flux of the spectral line. This makes the brightest X-ray pulsars unsuitable candidates for γ-ray line detection. In this work, we present a theoretical framework for predicting the optimal X-ray luminosity required to detect a redshifted 2.2 MeV line in a strongly magnetized NS. As the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) mission nears its conclusion, we have undertaken a thorough investigation of the SPectrometer on board INTEGRAL (SPI) data of this line in a representative sample of accreting NSs. No redshifted 2.2 MeV line was detected. For each spectrum, we have determined the 3σ upper limits of the line intensity, assuming different values of the line width. Although the current upper limits are still significantly above the expected line intensity, they offer valuable information for designing future gamma-ray telescopes aimed at bridging the observational MeV gap. Our findings suggest that advancing our understanding of the emission mechanism of the 2.2 MeV line, as well as the accretion flow responsible for it, will require a substantial increase in sensitivity from future MeV missions. For example, for a bright X-ray binary such as Sco X−1, we would need at least a 3σ line point source sensitivity of ≈10−6 ph cm−2 s−1, that is, about two orders of magnitude better than that currently achieved. PSR J1227−6208 is a 34.53-ms recycled pulsar with a massive companion. This system has long been suspected to belong to the emerging class of massive recycled pulsar−ONeMg white dwarf systems such as PSR J2222−0137, PSR J1528−3146, and J1439−5501. Here, we present an updated emission and timing analysis with more than 11 years of combined Parkes and MeerKAT data, including 19 hours of high-frequency data from the newly installed MeerKAT S-band receivers. We measure a scattering timescale of 1.22 ms at 1 GHz with a flat scattering index of 3.33 < β < 3.62, and a mean flux density of 0.53 − 0.62 mJy at 1 GHz with a steep spectral index of 2.06 < α < 2.35. Around 15% of the emission is linearly and circularly polarised, but the polarisation angle does not follow the rotating vector model. Thanks to the sensitivity of MeerKAT, we successfully measure a rate of periastron advance of ω7 = 0.0171(11) deg yr−1, and a Shapiro delay with an orthometric amplitude of h3 = 3.6 ± 0.5 μs and an orthometric ratio of ς = 0.85 ± 0.05. The main source of uncertainty in our timing analysis is chromatic correlated dispersion measure noise, which we model as a power law in the Fourier space thanks to the large frequency coverage provided by the Parkes UWL receiver. Assuming general relativity and accounting for the measurements across all the implemented timing noise models, the total mass, companion mass, pulsar mass, and inclination angle are constrained at 2.3 < Mt/M⊙ < 3.2, 1.21 < Mc/M⊙ < 1.47, 1.16 < Mp/M⊙ < 1.69, and 77.5 < i/deg < 80.3. We also constrain the longitude of ascending node to either Ωa = 266 ± 78 deg or Ωa = 86 ± 78 deg. We argue against a neutron star nature of the companion based on the very low orbital eccentric of the system (e = 1.15 × 10−3), and instead classify the companion of PSR J1227−6208 as a rare, massive ONeMg white dwarf close to the Chandrasekhar limit. We report the discovery of the new accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SRGA J144459.2−604207 using data of the SRG/ART-XC. The source was observed twice in February 2024 during the declining phase of the outburst. The timing analysis revealed a coherent signal near 447.9 Hz modulated by the Doppler effect due to the orbital motion. The derived parameters for the binary system are consistent with a circular orbit with a period of ∼5.2 h. The pulse profiles of the persistent emission, showing a sine-like part during half a period with a plateau in between, can be well modeled by emission from two circular spots that are partially eclipsed by the accretion disk. Additionally, during our observations with an exposure of 133 ks, we detected 19 thermonuclear X-ray bursts. All bursts have similar shapes and energetics, and none show any signs of an expanding photospheric radius. The burst recurrence times decreases linearly from ∼1.6 h at the beginning of observations to ∼2.2 h at the end and anticorrelate with the persistent flux. The spectral evolution during the bursts is consistent with the models of the neutron star atmospheres that are heated by accretion and implies a neutron star radius of 11–12 km and a distance to the source of 8–9 kpc. We also detected coherent pulsations during the bursts and showed that the pulse profiles differ substantially from those observed in the persistent emission. We present a complete numerical model of the afterglow of a laterally structured relativistic ejecta from the radio to very high energies (VHE). This includes a self-consistent calculation of the synchrotron radiation, with its maximum frequency, and of synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scattering that takes the Klein-Nishina regime into account. Attenuation due to pair production is also included. This model is computationally efficient and allows multi-wavelength data fitting. As a validation test, the radiative model was used to fit the broad-band spectrum of GRB 190114C at 90 s up to the TeV range. The full model was then used to fit the afterglow of GW 170817 and predict its VHE emission. We find that the SSC flux at the peak was much dimmer than the upper limit from H.E.S.S. observations. However, we show that either a smaller viewing angle or a higher external density would make similar off-axis events detectable in the future at VHE, even above 100 Mpc with the sensitivity of the Cherenkov telescope array. High external densities are expected in the case of fast mergers, but the existence of a formation channel for these binary neutron stars is still uncertain. How massive stars end their lives depends on the core mass, core angular momentum, and hydrogen envelopes at death. However, these key physical facets of stellar evolution can be severely affected by binary interactions. In turn, the effectiveness of binary interactions itself varies greatly depending on the initial conditions of the binaries, making the situation much more complex. We investigate systematically how binary interactions influence core–collapse progenitors and their fates. Binary evolution simulations are performed to survey the parameter space of supernova progenitors in solar metallicity binary systems and to delineate major evolutionary paths. We first study fixed binary mass ratios (⁠|$q=M_2/M_1$| = 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9) to elucidate the impacts of initial mass and initial separation on the outcomes, treating separately Type Ibc supernova, Type II supernova, accretion-induced collapse (AIC), rapidly rotating supernova (Ibc-R), black hole formation, and long gamma ray burst (long GRB). We then conduct 12 binary population synthesis model calculations, varying the initial condition distributions and binary evolution parameters, to estimate various supernova fractions. We obtain a Milky Way supernova rate |$R_{\rm SN} = (1.78$| – |$2.47) \times 10^{-2} \, {\rm yr}^{-1}$| which is consistent with observations. We find the rates of AIC, Ibc-R, and long GRB to be |$\sim 1/100$| the rate of regular supernovae. Our estimated long GRB rates are higher than the observed long GRB rate and close to the low luminosity GRB rate, although care must be taken considering our models are computed with solar metallicity. Furthering binary modelling and improving the inputs one by one will enable more detailed studies of these and other transients associated with massive stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

General-relativistic equilibria of differentially rotating stars are expected in a number of astrophysical scenarios, from core-collapse supernovae to the remnant of binary neutron-star mergers. The latter, in particular, have been the subject of extensive studies where they were modelled with a variety of laws of differential rotation with varying degree of realism. Starting from accurate and fully general-relativistic simulations of binary neutron-star mergers with various equations of state and mass ratios, we establish the time when the merger remnant has reached a quasi-stationary equilibrium and extract in this way realistic profiles of differential rotation. This allows us to explore how well traditional laws reproduce such differential-rotation properties and to derive new laws of differential rotation that better match the numerical data in the low-density Keplerian regions of the remnant. In this way, we have obtained a novel and somewhat surprising result: the dynamical stability line to quasi-radial oscillations computed from the turning-point criterion can have a slope that is not necessarily negative with respect to the central rest-mass density, as previously found with traditional differential-rotation laws. Indeed, for stellar models reproducing well the properties of the merger remnants, the slope is actually positive, thus reflecting remnants with angular momentum at large distances from the rotation axis, and hence with cores having higher central rest-mass densities and slower rotation rates. According to the strange quark matter hypothesis, strange planets may exist, which are planetary mass objects composed of almost equal numbers of up, down, and strange quarks. A strange planet can revolve around its host strange star in a very close-in orbit. When it finally merges with the host, strong gravitational wave emissions will be generated. Here, the gravitational waveforms are derived for the merging process, taking into account the effects of the strange star's magnetic field on the dynamics. Effects of the inclination angle are also considered. Templates of the gravitational waveforms are derived. It is found that the magnetic interactions significantly speed up the merging process. Coalescence events of such strange planetary systems occurring in our Galaxy as well as in local galaxies can be effectively detected by current and future gravitational experiments, which may hopefully provide a new method to test the strange quark matter hypothesis and probe the magnetic field of compact stars. Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are considered the primary magnetar formation channel, with 15 magnetars associated with supernova remnants (SNRs). A large fraction of these should occur in massive stellar binaries that are disrupted by the explosion, meaning that |$\sim 45~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of magnetars should be nearby high-velocity stars. Here, we conduct a multiwavelength search for unbound stars, magnetar binaries, and SNR shells using public optical (uvgrizy bands), infrared (J, H, K , and Ks bands), and radio (888 MHz, 1.4 GHz, and 3 GHz) catalogues. We use Monte Carlo analyses of candidates to estimate the probability of association with a given magnetar based on their proximity, distance, proper motion, and magnitude. In addition to recovering a proposed magnetar binary, a proposed unbound binary, and 13 of 15 magnetar SNRs, we identify two new candidate unbound systems: an OB star from the Gaia catalogue we associate with SGR J1822.3−1606, and an X-ray pulsar we associate with 3XMM J185246.6 + 003317. Using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation that assumes all magnetars descend from CCSNe, we constrain the fraction of magnetars with unbound companions to |$5\lesssim f_u \lesssim 24~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , which disagrees with neutron star population synthesis results. Alternate formation channels are unlikely to wholly account for the lack of unbound binaries as this would require |$31\lesssim f_{nc} \lesssim 66~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of magnetars to descend from such channels. Our results support a high fraction (⁠|$48\lesssim f_m \lesssim 86~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of pre-CCSN mergers, which can amplify fossil magnetic fields to preferentially form magnetars. Double neutron star (DNS) systems offer excellent opportunities to test gravity theories. We report the timing results of PSR J1901+0658, the first pulsar discovered in the FAST Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) Survey. Based on timing observations by FAST over 5 yr, we obtain the phase-coherent timing solution and derive the precise measurements of its position, spin parameters, orbital parameters, and dispersion measure. It has a period of 75.7 ms, a period derivative of 2.169(6) × 10−19 s s−1, and a characteristic age of 5.5 Gyr. This pulsar is in an orbit with a period of 14.45 d and an eccentricity of 0.366. One post-Keplerian parameter, periastron advance, has been well-measured as being 0.00531(9) deg yr−1, from which the total mass of this system is derived to be 2.79(7) M⊙. The pulsar has the mass upper limit of 1.68 M⊙, so the lower limit for the companion mass is 1.11 M⊙. Because PSR J1901+0658 is a partially recycled pulsar in an eccentric binary orbit with such a large companion mass, it should be in a DNS system according to the evolution history of the binary system. Using MeerKAT , we have discovered three new millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the bulge globular cluster M62: M62H, M62I, and M62J. All three are in binary systems, which means all ten known pulsars in the cluster are in binaries. M62H has a planetary-mass companion with a median mass M c, med ∼ 3 MJ and a mean density of ρ ∼ 11 g cm−3. M62I has an orbital period of 0.51 d and a M c, med ∼ 0.15 M⊙. Neither of these low-mass systems exhibit eclipses. M62J has only been detected in the two Ultra High Frequency band (816 MHz) observations with a flux density S 816 = 0.08 mJy. The non-detection in the L-band (1284 MHz) indicates it has a relatively steep spectrum (β < −3.1). We also present 23-yr-long timing solutions obtained using data from the Parkes 'Murriyang', Effelsberg , and MeerKAT telescopes for the six previously known pulsars. For all these pulsars, we measured the second spin-period derivatives and the rate of change of orbital period caused by the gravitational field of the cluster, and their proper motions. From these measurements, we conclude that the pulsars' maximum accelerations are consistent with the maximum cluster acceleration assuming a core-collapsed mass distribution. Studies of the eclipses of the redback M62B and the black widow M62E at four and two different frequency bands, respectively, reveal a frequency dependence with longer and asymmetric eclipses at lower frequencies. The presence of only binary MSPs in this cluster challenges models which suggest that the MSP population of core-collapsed clusters should be dominated by isolated MSPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neutron star–white dwarf (NSWD) binaries are one of the most abundant sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the Milky Way. These GW sources are the evolutionary products of primordial binaries that experienced many processes of binary interaction. We employ a binary population synthesis method to investigate the properties of Galactic NSWD binaries detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). In this paper, only the NSWD systems with a COWD or ONeWD component are included. We consider various models related to mass-transfer efficiencies during primordial binary evolution, supernova explosion mechanisms at NS formation, common envelope ejection efficiencies, and critical WD masses that determine the stability of mass transfer between WDs and NSs. Based on our calculations, we estimate that tens to hundreds of LISA NSWD binaries exist in the Milky Way. We find that the detection of LISA NSWD binaries is able to provide profound insights into mass-transfer efficiencies during the evolution of primordial binaries and critical WD masses during mass transfer from a WD to an NS. A large number of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are expected to be detected by gravitational wave (GW) detectors and the electromagnetic (EM) counterparts (e.g. kilonovae) of a fraction of these mergers may be detected in multibands by large area survey telescopes. For a given number of BNS mergers detected by their GW signals, the expected numbers of their EM counterparts that can be detected by a survey with given selection criteria depend on the kilonova properties, including the anisotropy. In this paper, we investigate whether the anisotropy of kilonova radiation and the kilonova model can be constrained statistically by the counting method, i.e. using the numbers of BNS mergers detected via GW and multiband EM signals. Adopting simple models for the BNS mergers, afterglows, and a simple two (blue and red)-component model for kilonovae, we generate mock samples for GW detected BNS mergers, their associated kilonovae, and afterglows detected in multibands. By assuming some criteria for searching the EM counterparts, we simulate the observations of these EM counterparts and obtain the EM observed samples in different bands. With the numbers of BNS mergers detected by GW detectors and EM survey telescopes in different bands, we show that the anisotropy of kilonova radiation and the kilonova model can be well constrained by using the Bayesian analysis. Our results suggest that the anisotropy of kilonova radiation may be demographically and globally constrained by simply using the detection numbers of BNS mergers by GW detectors and EM survey telescopes in multibands. PSR J1641+8049 is a 2 ms black widow pulsar with the 2.2 h orbital period detected in the radio and γ-rays. We performed new phase-resolved multiband photometry of PSR J1641+8049 using the OSIRIS instrument at the Gran Telescopio Canarias. The obtained data were analysed together with the new radio-timing observations from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), the X-ray data from the Spectrum-RG/ eROSITA all-sky survey, and all available optical photometric observations. An updated timing solution based on CHIME data is presented, which accounts for secular and periodic modulations in pulse dispersion. The system parameters obtained through the light-curve analysis, including the distance to the source 4.6–4.8 kpc and the orbital inclination 56–59 deg, are found to be consistent with previous studies. However, the optical flux of the source at the maximum brightness phase faded by a factor of ∼2 as compared to previous observations. Nevertheless, the face of the J1641+8049 companion remains one of the most heated (8000–9500 K) by a pulsar among the known black widow pulsars. We also report a new estimation on the pulsar proper motion of ≈2 mas yr−1, which yields a spin-down luminosity of ≈4.87 × 1034 erg s−1 and a corresponding heating efficiency of the companion by the pulsar of 0.3–0.7. The pulsar was not detected in X-rays implying its X-ray-luminosity was |$\lesssim$| 3 × 1031 erg s−1 at the date of observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on radio timing observations of PSR J0210+5845 that reveal large deviations from typical pulsar spin-down behaviour. We interpret these deviations as being due to the binary motion around the V = 13.5 star 2MASS J02105640+5845176, which is coincident in terms of its celestial position and distance with the pulsar. Archival observations and new optical spectroscopy have identified this object as a B6 V star, with a temperature of Teff ≈ 14 000 K and a mass of Mc = 3.5 to 3.8 M⊙, making it the lowest mass for a main sequence star known to be orbiting a non-recycled pulsar. We find that the timing observations constrain the binary orbit to be wide and moderately eccentric, with an orbital period of Pb = 47−14+40 yr and eccentricity of e = 0.46−0.07+0.10. We predict that the next periastron passage will occur between 2030 and 2034. Due to the low companion mass, we find that the probability for a system with the properties of PSR J0210+5845 and its binary companion to survive the supernova is low. We show that a low velocity and fortuitously directed natal kick is required for the binary to remain bound during the supernova explosion and we argue that an electron-capture supernova is a plausible formation scenario for the pulsar. PSR J1012−4235 is a 3.1 ms pulsar in a wide binary (37.9 days) with a white dwarf companion. We detect, for the first time, a strong relativistic Shapiro delay signature in PSR J1012−4235. Our detection is the result of a timing analysis of data spanning 13 yr and collected with the Green Bank, Parkes, and MeerKAT Radio Telescopes and the Fermiγ-ray space telescope. We measured the orthometric parameters for Shapiro delay and obtained a 22σ detection of the h3 parameter of 1.222(54) μs and a 200σ detection of ς of 0.9646(49). With the assumption of general relativity, these measurements constrain the pulsar mass (Mp = 1.44−0.12+0.13 M⊙), the mass of the white dwarf companion (Mc = 0.270−0.015+0.016M⊙), and the orbital inclination (i = 88.06−0.25+0.28 deg). Including the early γ-ray data in our timing analysis facilitated a precise measurement of the proper motion of the system of 6.58(5) mas yr−1. We also show that the system has unusually small kinematic corrections to the measurement of the orbital period derivative, and therefore has the potential to yield stringent constraints on the variation of the gravitational constant in the future. The merger locations of binary neutron stars (BNSs) encode their galactic kinematics and provide insights into their connection to short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs). In this work, we use the sample of Galactic BNSs with measured proper motions to investigate their kinematics and predict their merger locations. Using a synthetic image of the Milky Way and its Galactic potential we analyse the BNS mergers as seen from an extragalactic viewpoint and compare them to the location of SGRBs on and around their host galaxies. We find that the Galactocentric transverse velocities of the BNSs are similar in magnitude and direction to those of their Local Standards of Rest, which implies that the present-day systemic velocities are not isotropically oriented and the peculiar velocities might be as low as those of BNS progenitors. Both systemic and peculiar velocities fit a lognormal distribution, with the peculiar velocities being as low as ∼22–157 km s−1. We also find that the observed BNS sample is not representative of the whole Galactic population, but rather of systems born around the Sun's location with small peculiar velocities. When comparing the predicted BNS merger locations to SGRBs, we find that they cover the same range of projected offsets, host-normalized offsets, and fractional light. Therefore, the spread in SGRB locations can be reproduced by mergers of BNSs born in the Galactic disc with small peculiar velocities, although the median offset match is likely a coincidence due to the biased BNS sample. Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are believed to be old neutron stars that have undergone spin-up by the accreting material from the donor. However, the discovery of eccentric MSPs (eMSPs) in the Galactic field challenges such a scenario of producing MSP–white dwarf systems only in a circular orbit. As the orbital periods and companion masses of these eMSPs are located in a narrow range, it is reasonable to postulate that they have the same origin. Although many models have been proposed to interpret the origin of eMSPs, the origin of the narrow range of the orbital period is still an open question. The accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of the oxygen–neon white dwarf is considered to be an important pathway to form MSPs, as it is expected to result in the formation of MSPs in a circular orbit due to tidal circularization. Here we revisited this scenario using binary population synthesis including the specific circularization calculation. Our results indicate that binaries with insufficient circularization in this scenario can evolve into eMSPs. The narrow initial binary parameters required by insufficient circularization can naturally account for the narrow range of the orbital period. Although the evolution of the white dwarf AIC process is not yet well understood, the characteristic of a narrow range in the orbital period of eMSPs can still set constraints on the physics of their evolution. Galactic binary neutron stars (BNSs) are a unique laboratory to probe the evolution of BNSs and their progenitors. Here, we use a new version of the population synthesis code sevn to evolve the population of Galactic BNSs, by modelling the spin up and down of pulsars self-consistently. We analyse the merger rate |$\mathcal {R}_{\rm MW}$|⁠ , orbital period P orb, eccentricity e , spin period P , and spin period derivative |$\dot{P}$| of the BNS population. Values of the common envelope parameter α = 1−3 and an accurate model of the Milky Way star formation history best reproduce the BNS merger rate in our Galaxy (⁠|$\mathcal {R}_{\rm MW}\approx {}30$| Myr−1). We apply radio-selection effects to our simulated BNSs and compare them to the observed population. Using a Dirichlet process Gaussian mixture method, we evaluate the four-dimensional likelihood in the |$(P_{\rm orb}, e, P, \dot{P})$| space, by comparing our radio-selected simulated pulsars against Galactic BNSs. Our analysis favours an uniform initial distribution for both the magnetic field (1010−13 G) and the spin period (10−100 ms). The implementation of radio selection effects is critical to match not only the spin period and period derivative, but also the orbital period and eccentricity of Galactic BNSs. Massive stars are the progenitors of black holes and neutron stars, the mergers of which can be detected with gravitational waves (GW). The expansion of massive stars is one of the key factors affecting their evolution in close binary systems, but it remains subject to large uncertainties in stellar astrophysics. For population studies and predictions of GW sources, the stellar expansion is often simulated with the analytic formulae from Hurley et al. (2000). These formulae need to be extrapolated and are often considered outdated. In this work, we present five different prescriptions developed from 1D stellar models to constrain the maximum expansion of massive stars. We adopt these prescriptions to investigate how stellar expansion affects mass transfer interactions and in turn the formation of GW sources. We show that limiting radial expansion with updated 1D stellar models, when compared to the use of Hurley et al. (2000) radial expansion formulae, does not significantly affect GW source properties (rates and masses). This is because most mass transfer events leading to GW sources are initialized in our models before the donor star reaches its maximum expansion. The only significant difference was found for the mass distribution of massive binary black hole mergers (M tot > 50 M⊙) formed from stars that may evolve beyond the Humphreys–Davidson limit, whose radial expansion is the most uncertain. We conclude that understanding the expansion of massive stars and the origin of the Humphrey–Davidson limit is a key factor for the study of GW sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The values of the bending delays in the signal of a radio pulsar in a binary with a stellar mass black hole as a companion have been calculated accurately within a full general relativistic framework considering the Schwarzchid spacetime near the companion. The results match with the pre-existing approximate analytical expressions unless both of the orbital inclination angle and the orbital phase are close to 90°. For such a case, the approximate analytical expressions underestimate the value of the bending delay. On the other hand, for systems like the double pulsar, those expressions are valid throughout the orbital phase, unless its inclination angle is very close to 90°. For a pulsar-black hole binary, the bending phenomenon also increases the strength of the pulse profile and sometimes can lead to a small low intensity tail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present multi-epoch spectroscopic follow-up of a sample of ellipsoidal variables selected from Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) as candidates for hosting quiescent black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs). Our targets were identified as BH/NS candidates because their optical light curves – when interpreted with models that attribute variability to tidal distortion of a star by a companion that contributes negligible light – suggest that the companions are compact objects. From the likely BH/NS candidates identified in recent work accompanying Gaia DR3, we select 14 of the most promising targets for follow-up. We obtained spectra for each object at 2–10 epochs, strategically observing near conjunction to best constrain the radial velocity semi-amplitude. From the measured semi-amplitudes of the radial velocity curves, we derive minimum companion masses of |$M_{2,\, \rm min} \le 0.5 \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$| in all cases. Assuming random inclinations, the typical inferred companion mass is |$M_2 \sim 0.15\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠. This makes it unlikely that any of these systems contain a BH or NS, and we consider alternative explanations for the observed variability. We can best reproduce the observed light curves and radial velocities with models for unequal-mass contact binaries with star-spots. Some of the objects in our sample may also be detached main-sequence binaries, or even single stars with pulsations or star-spot variability masquerading as ellipsoidal variation. We provide recommendations for future spectroscopic efforts to further characterize this sample and more generally to search for compact object companions in close binaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) sources that arise from isolated binary evolution, and how these depend on age and metallicity, using model stellar populations from bpass. We model these as single-aged populations which are analogous to star clusters. We calculate the combined gravitational wave (GW) spectrum of all the binaries within these model clusters, including all types of compact binaries as well as those with living stars. These results allow us to evaluate the detectability of star clusters with LISA. We find at late times the dominant sources are WD–WD binaries by factors of 50–200, but at times between 108 and 109 yr we find a significant population of NS–WD and BH–WD binaries (2–40 per 106 M⊙), which is related to the treatment of mass transfer and common-envelope events in bpass , wherein mass transfer is relatively likely to be stable. Metallicity also has an effect on the GW spectrum and on the relative dominance of different types of binaries. We report the discovery of the first hot subdwarf B (sdB) star with a massive compact companion in a wide (P = 892.5 ± 60.2 d) binary system. It was discovered based on an astrometric binary solution provided by the Gaia mission Data Release 3. We performed detailed analyses of the spectral energy distribution (SED) as well as spectroscopic follow-up observations and confirm the nature of the visible component as a sdB star. The companion is invisible despite of its high mass of Mcomp = 1.50−0.45+0.37 M⊙ M comp = 1. 50 − 0.45 + 0.37 M ⊙ $ M_{\mathrm{comp}}=1.50_{-0.45}^{+0.37}\,M_{\odot} $. A main sequence star of this mass would significantly contribute to the SED and can be excluded. The companion must be a compact object, either a massive white dwarf or a neutron star. Stable Roche lobe overflow to the companion likely led to the stripping of a red giant and the formation of the sdB, the hot and exposed helium core of the giant. Based on very preliminary data, we estimate that ∼9% of the sdBs might be formed through this new channel. We perform population synthesis of massive binaries to study the mergers of neutron stars (NSs) and black holes (BHs) with the cores of their giant secondaries during common envelope evolution (CEE). We use different values of the efficiency parameter αCE in the framework of the energy formalism for traditional CEE (αCE ≤ 1) and including additional energy sources to unbind the envelope (αCE > 1). We constrain the possible values of αCE by comparing the results of our simulations with local rate densities of binary compact object mergers as inferred from gravitational-wave observations. We find two main evolutionary pathways of binary systems that result in NS–core mergers, while only one of them can also lead to the merger of a BH with the core of the giant star. We explore the zero-age main-sequence statistical properties of systems that result in NS/BH–core mergers and find that the two evolutionary channels correspond to a bimodal distribution of orbital separations. We estimate the percentage of the mergers' event rates relative to core-collapse supernovae. We include the effect of mass accreted by the NS/BH during CEE in a separate set of simulations and find that it does not affect the mergers' event rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use the rapid binary stellar evolution code binary_c to estimate the rate of merging neutron stars with numerous combinations of envelope ejection efficiency and natal kick dispersion. We find a peak in the local rate of merging neutron stars around α ≈ 0.3–0.4, depending on the metallicity, where α is the efficiency of utilizing orbital energy to unbind the envelope. The peak height decreases with increasing electron-capture supernova kick dispersion σECSN. We explain the peak as a competition between the total number of systems that survive the common-envelope phase increasing with α and their separation, which increases with α as well. Increasing α reduces the fraction of systems that merge within a time shorter than the age of the Universe and results in different mass distributions for merging and non-merging double neutron stars. This offers a possible explanation for the discrepancy between the Galactic double neutron star mass distribution and the observed massive merging neutron star event GW190425. Within the α–σECSN parameter space that we investigate, the rate of merging neutron stars spans several orders of magnitude up to more than |$1\times 10^{3} \, \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3}\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$| and can be higher than the observed upper limit or lower than the observed lower limit inferred thus far from merging neutron stars detected by gravitational waves. Our results stress the importance of common-envelope physics for the quantitative prediction and interpretation of merging binary neutron star events in this new age of gravitational wave astronomy. It has been proposed that accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of massive white-dwarfs (WDs) is an indispensable path for the formation of neutron star (NS) binaries. Although there are still no direct evidence for the existence of AIC events, several kinds of NS systems are suggested to originate from the AIC processes. One of the representative evidence is the detection of the strong magnetic field and slow spin NSs with ultra-light companions (⁠|${\le}0.1\, \rm M_{\odot }$|⁠) in close orbits. However, previous studies cannot explain the formation of AIC events with such low-mass companions. In the present work, we evolve a series of ONe WD+He WD systems to the formation of AIC events (named as the He WD donor channel), and the NS binaries behave as ultra-compact X-ray binaries when the He WDs refill their Roche lobes. We found that the ONe WD+He WD systems a possible channel for the formation of the newly formed NS+ultra-light companion systems just after the AIC event. Although there are some other inconsistent properties, the detected companion mass and orbital period of 4U 1626–67 (one of the newly formed NS binaries with ultra-light companions) can be reproduced by the He WD donor channel. In addition, combined with previous asteroseismology results, we speculate that an UCXB source (XTE J1751−305) may originate from the He WD donor channel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mass distribution of double neutron stars (DNSs) can help us to understand the evolution of binary systems, which can also contain information about DNSs induced by gravitational wave radiation. Henceforth, for the 25 pairs of DNS systems so far discovered by radio observations, we have only statistically analysed 13 systems with precisely measured masses of two-component NSs, by employing the classical Gaussian mixture models based on the Akaike and Bayesian information criteria. The result infers that the mass distributions for recycled and non-recycled NSs follow a double-Gaussian and single-Gaussian distribution, respectively. In the conventional scenario of DNS formation, the mass of the first formed recycled NS is higher than that of the second-formed companion NS. However, there exist some unconventional cases with a reverse mass ratio. To explore the phenomenon of this 'unconventional component mass' of DNSs, we employed Monte Carlo sampling. We find that the unconventional DNS systems occupy about 27.7 per cent of all DNSs, which could be a useful reference for the future gravitational wave detection by LIGO/Virgo. Furthermore, we discuss a possible explanation for the unconventional DNS mass ratio, which involves the recycling process and its birth rate. Context. Many physical processes taking place during the evolution of binary stellar systems remain poorly understood. The everexpanding observational sample of X-ray binaries (XRBs) makes them excellent laboratories for constraining binary evolution theory. Such constraints and useful insights can be obtained by studying the effects of various physical assumptions on synthetic X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) and comparing them with observed XLFs. Aims. In this work we focus on high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) and study the effects on the XLF of various, poorly constrained assumptions regarding physical processes, such as the common-envelope phase, core collapse, and wind-fed accretion. Methods. We used the new binary population synthesis code POSYDON, which employs extensive precomputed grids of detailed stellar structure and binary evolution models, to simulate the entire evolution of binaries. We generated 96 synthetic XRB populations corresponding to different combinations of model assumptions, including different prescriptions for supernova kicks, supernova remnant masses, common-envelope evolution, circularization at the onset of Roche-lobe overflow, and observable wind-fed accretion. Results. The generated HMXB XLFs are feature-rich, deviating from the commonly assumed single power law. We find a break in our synthetic XLF at luminosity ~1038 erg s1, similar to observed XLFs. However, we also find a general overabundance of XRBs (up to a factor of ~10 for certain model parameter combinations) driven primarily by XRBs with black hole accretors. Assumptions about the transient behavior of Be XRBs, asymmetric supernova kicks, and common-envelope physics can significantly affect the shape and normalization of our synthetic XLFs. We find that less well-studied assumptions regarding the circularization of the orbit at the onset of Roche-lobe overflow and criteria for the formation of an X-ray-emitting accretion disk around wind-accreting black holes can also impact our synthetic XLFs and reduce the discrepancy with observations. Conclusions. Our synthetic XLFs do not always agree well with observations, especially at intermediate X-ray luminosities, which is likely due to uncertainties in the adopted physical assumptions. While some model parameters leave distinct imprints on the shape of the synthetic XLFs and can reduce this deviation, others do not have a significant effect overall. Context. PSR J1910−5959A is a binary millisecond pulsar in a 0.837 day circular orbit around a helium white dwarf (HeWD) companion. The position of this pulsar is 6.3 arcmin (∼74 core radii) away from the optical centre of the globular cluster (GC) NGC 6752. Given the large offset, the association of the pulsar with the GC has been debated. Aims. We aim to obtain precise measurements of the masses of the stars in the system along with secular orbital parameters, which will help identify if the system belongs to the GC. Methods. We have made use of archival Parkes 64 m 'Murriyang' telescope data and carried out observations with the MeerKAT telescope with different backends and receivers over the last two decades. Pulse times of arrival were obtained from these using standard pulsar data reduction techniques and analysed using state-of-the-art Bayesian pulsar timing techniques. We also performed an analysis of the pulsar's total intensity and polarisation profile to understand the interstellar scattering along the line of sight, and we determined the pulsar's geometry by fitting the rotating vector model to the polarisation data. Results. We obtain precise measurements of several post-Keplerian parameters: the range, r = 0.202(6) T⊙, and shape, s = 0.999823(4), of the Shapiro delay, from which we infer: the orbital inclination to be 88.9−0.14+0.15 deg; the masses of the pulsar and the companion to be 1.55(7) M⊙ and 0.202(6) M⊙, respectively; a secular change in the orbital period Ṗb = −53−6.0+7.4 × 10−15 s s−1 that proves the GC association; and a secular change in the projected semi-major axis of the pulsar, ẋ = −40.7−8.2+7.3 × 10−16 s s−1, likely caused by the spin–orbit interaction from a misaligned HeWD spin, at odds with the likely isolated binary evolution of the system. We also discuss some theoretical models for the structure and evolution of white dwarfs in neutron star–white dwarf binaries, using PSR J1910−5959A's companion as a test bed. Conclusions. PSR J1910−5959A is a rare system for which several parameters of both the pulsar and the HeWD companion can be accurately measured. The first two months of the third Advanced LIGO and Virgo observing run (2019 April-May) showed that distant gravitational-wave (GW) events can now be readily detected. Three candidate mergers containing neutron stars (NS) were reported in a span of 15 days, all likely located more than 100 Mpc away. However, distant events such as the three new NS mergers are likely to be coarsely localized, which highlights the importance of facilities and scheduling systems that enable deep observations over hundreds to thousands of square degrees to detect the electromagnetic counterparts. On 2019 May 10 02:59:39.292 UT the GW candidate S190510g was discovered and initially classified as a binary neutron star (BNS) merger with 98% probability. The GW event was localized within an area of 3462 deg2, later refined to 1166 deg2 (90%) at a distance of 227 92 Mpc. We triggered Target-of-Opportunity observations with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), a wide-field optical imager mounted at the prime focus of the 4 m Blanco Telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. This Letter describes our DECam observations and our real-time analysis results, focusing in particular on the design and implementation of the observing strategy. Within 24 hr of the merger time, we observed 65% of the total enclosed probability of the final skymap with an observing efficiency of 94%. We identified and publicly announced 13 candidate counterparts. S190510g was reclassified 1.7 days after the merger, after our observations were completed, with a "BNS merger" probability reduced from 98% to 42% in favor of a "terrestrial classification.

The standard formation theory of binary millisecond pulsars (BMSPs) predicts efficient orbital circularization due to tidal interaction during the previous mass transfer phase. Therefore, BMSPs are expected to have a circular orbit. However, the discovery of several eccentric BMSPs (eBMSPs) with a white dwarf (WD) companion has challenged this picture. In particular, recent observation reveals that the spin angular momentum of the eBMSP J0955−6150 is tilted at an angle >4.8○ from the orbital angular momentum. This is the first time that a tilt angle is deduced for eBMSPs, which provides an important clue to their formation mechanism. Both the orbital eccentricity and the tilt angle could be qualitatively accounted for by asymmetrical mass ejection during thermonuclear flashes from proto-WDs (so-called thermonuclear rocket model), but detailed studies are still lacking. In this paper, we simulate the impact of the kick caused by asymmetrical mass ejection on the properties of BMSPs. We find that the thermonuclear rocket model can potentially explain the observational characteristics of both eBMSPs and normal BMSPs under reasonable input parameters. In addition, our results predict a wide range of the orbital period (from less than one day to more than several hundred days) for eBMSPs, which can be tested by future observations. In preparation for the release of the astrometric orbits of Gaia , Shahaf et al. (2019) proposed a triage technique to identify astrometric binaries with compact companions based on their astrometric semimajor axis, parallax, and primary mass. The technique requires the knowledge of the appropriate mass–luminosity relation to rule out single or close-binary main-sequence companions. The recent publication of the Gaia DR3 astrometric orbits used a schematic version of this approach, identifying 735 astrometric binaries that might have compact companions. In this communication, we return to the triage of the DR3 astrometric binaries with more careful analysis, estimating the probability for its astrometric secondary to be a compact object or a main-sequence close binary. We compile a sample of 177 systems with highly probable non-luminous massive companions, which is smaller but cleaner than the sample reported in Gaia DR3. The new sample includes eight candidates to be black-hole systems with compact-object masses larger than 2.4 M⊙. The orbital–eccentricity–secondary–mass diagram of the other 169 systems suggests a tentative separation between the white-dwarf and the neutron-star binaries. Most white-dwarf binaries are characterized by small eccentricities of about 0.1 and masses of 0.6 M⊙, while the neutron star binaries display typical eccentricities of 0.4 and masses of 1.3 M⊙. We present an updated measurement of orbital period evolution of LMXB XTE J1710−281 by using eclipse timing technique. Using data obtained with XMM - Newton, Suzaku, RXTE, Chandra , and AstroSat observatories, we report 21 new measurements of X-ray mid-eclipse times. We have discovered a third orbital period glitch in XTE J1710−281 with an F-test false alarm probability of ∼0.7 per cent for occurrence of the third glitch and report detection of four distinct epochs of orbital period in this system. This work presents a more robust estimation of occurrence of the second orbital period glitch. However, the epoch of occurrence of the third glitch is poorly constrained, between MJD 55726 and 56402. We have put lower limits of 1.48, 0.97, and 0.45 ms, on sudden changes in orbital period between the successive epochs. We discuss the implications of our findings in context of magnetic nature of the companion star and possible scattering events with circumbinary objects around this binary system. We present the pulsar timing analysis of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SWIFT J1749.4 − 2807 monitored by NICER and XMM–Newton during its latest outburst after almost 11 yr of quiescence. From the coherent timing analysis of the pulse profiles, we updated the orbital ephemerides of the system. Large phase jumps of the fundamental frequency phase of the signal are visible during the outburst, consistent with what was observed during the previous outburst. Moreover, we report on the marginally significant evidence for non-zero eccentricity (e ≃ 4 × 10−5) obtained independently from the analysis of both the 2021 and 2010 outbursts and we discuss possible compatible scenarios. Long-term orbital evolution of SWIFT J1749.4 − 2807 suggests a fast expansion of both the NS projected semimajor axis (x), and the orbital period (P orb), at a rate of |$\dot{x}\simeq 2.6\times 10^{-13}\, \text{lt-s}\, \text{s}^{-1}$| and |$\dot{P}_{\rm orb}\simeq 4 \times 10^{-10}\, \text{s}\, \text{s}^{-1}$|⁠ , respectively. SWIFT J1749.4 − 2807 is the only accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar, so far, from which the orbital period derivative has been directly measured from appreciable changes on the observed orbital period. Finally, no significant secular deceleration of the spin frequency of the compact object is detected, which allowed us to set a constraint on the magnetic field strength at the polar caps of B PC < 1.3 × 108 G, in line with typical values reported for AMXPs. It is well established that magnetars are neutron stars with extreme magnetic fields and young ages, but the evolutionary pathways to their creation are still uncertain. Since most massive stars are in binaries, if magnetars are a frequent result of core-collapse supernovae, some fractions are expected to have a bound companion at the time of observation. In this paper, we utilize literature constraints, including deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging, to search for bound stellar companions to magnetars. The magnitude and colour measurements are interpreted in the context of binary population synthesis predictions. We find two candidates for stellar companions associated with CXOU J171405.7–381031 and SGR 0755–2933, based on their J–H colours and H -band absolute magnitudes. Overall, the proportion of the Galactic magnetar population with a plausibly stellar near-infrared (NIR) counterpart candidate, based on their magnitudes and colours, is between 5 and 10 per cent. This is consistent with a population synthesis prediction of 5 per cent, for the fraction of core-collapse neutron stars arising from primaries that remain bound to their companion after the supernova. These results are therefore consistent with magnetars being drawn in an unbiased way from the natal core-collapse neutron star population, but some contribution from alternative progenitor channels cannot be ruled out. The observable population of double neutron star (DNS) systems in the Milky Way allow us to understand the nature of supernovae and binary stellar evolution. Until now, all DNS systems in wide orbits (P orb > 1 d) have been found to have orbital eccentricities, e > 0.1. In this paper, we report the discovery of pulsar PSR J1325−6253: a DNS system in a 1.81-d orbit with a surprisingly low eccentricity of just e  = 0.064. Through, 1.4 yr of dedicated timing with the Parkes radio telescope we have been able to measure its rate of advance of periastron, |$\dot{\omega }=0{_{.}^{\circ}}138\pm 0{_{.}^{\circ}}002\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$|⁠. If this induced |$\dot{\omega }$| is solely due to general relativity then the total mass of the system is, M sys = 2.57 ± 0.06 M⊙. Assuming an edge-on orbit the minimum companion mass is constrained to be M c, min > 0.98 M⊙ which implies the pulsar mass is M p, max < 1.59 M⊙. Its location in the P– |$\dot{P}$| diagram suggests that, like other DNS systems, PSR J1325−6253 is a recycled pulsar and if its mass is similar to the known examples (>1.3 M⊙), then the companion neutron star is probably less than ∼1.25 M⊙ and the system is inclined at about 50°–60°. The coalescence of a binary neutron star pair is expected to produce gravitational waves (GW) and electromagnetic radiation, both of which may be detectable with currently available instruments. We describe a search for a predicted r-process optical transient from these mergers, dubbed the "kilonova" (KN), using griz broadband data from the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN). Some models predict KNe to be redder, shorter-lived, and dimmer than supernovae (SNe), but the event rate of KNe is poorly constrained. We simulate KN and SN light curves with the Monte-Carlo simulation code SNANA to optimize selection requirements, determine search efficiency, and predict SN backgrounds. Our analysis of the first two seasons of DES-SN data results in 0 events, and is consistent with our prediction of 1.1 ± 0.2 background events based on simulations of SNe. From our prediction, there is a 33% chance of finding 0 events in the data. Assuming no underlying galaxy flux, our search sets 90% upper limits on the KN volumetric rate of 1.0 Gpc-3 yr-1 for the dimmest KN model we consider (peak i-band absolute magnitude mag) and 2.4 Gpc-3 yr-1 for the brightest ( mag). Accounting for anomalous subtraction artifacts on bright galaxies, these limits are ∼3 times higher. This analysis is the first untriggered optical KN search and informs selection requirements and strategies for future KN searches. Our upper limits on the KN rate are consistent with those measured by GW and gamma-ray burst searches.

The identification of the first confirmed neutron star–black hole (NS-BH) binary mergers by the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA collaboration provides the opportunity to investigate the properties of the early sample of confirmed and candidate events. Here, we focus primarily on the tilt angle of the BH's spin relative to the orbital angular momentum vector of the binary, and the implications for the physical processes that determine this tilt. The posterior tilt distributions of GW200115 and the candidate events GW190426_152155 and GW190917_114630 peak at significantly anti-aligned orientations (though display wide distributions). Producing these tilts through isolated binary evolution would require stronger natal kicks than are typically considered (and preferentially polar kicks would be ruled out), and/or an additional source of tilt such as stable mass transfer. The early sample of NS-BH events are less massive than expected for classical formation channels, and may provide evidence for efficient mass transfer that results in the merger of more massive NS-BH binaries before their evolution to the compact phase is complete. We predict that future gravitational-wave detections of NS-BH events will continue to display total binary masses of ≈7 M⊙ and mass ratios of q ∼ 3 if this interpretation is correct. Conversely, the high mass of the candidate GW191219_163120 suggests a dynamical capture origin. Large tilts in a significant fraction of merging NS-BH systems would weaken the prospects for electromagnetic detection. Supernova explosion and the associated neutron star (NS) natal kicks are important events on a pathway of a binary to become a gravitational wave source, an X-ray binary, or a millisecond radio pulsar. Weak natal kicks often lead to binary survival, while strong kicks frequently disrupt the binary. In this article, we aim to further constrain NS natal kicks in binaries. We explore binary population synthesis models by varying prescription for natal kick, remnant mass, and mass accretion efficiency. We introduce a robust statistical technique to analyse combined observations of different nature. Using this technique, we further test different models using parallax and proper motion measurements for young isolated radio pulsars and similar measurements for Galactic Be X-ray binaries (BeXs). Our best model for natal kicks is consistent with both measurements and contains a fraction of w = 0.2 ± 0.1 weak natal kicks with |$\sigma _1 = 45^{+25}_{-15}$|  km s−1, the remaining natal kicks are drawn from the high-velocity component, same as in previous works: σ2 = 336 km s−1. We found that currently used models for natal kicks of NSs produced by electron capture supernova (ecSN; combination of Maxwellian σ = 265 km s−1 and σ = 30 km s−1 for electron capture) are inconsistent or marginally consistent with parallaxes and proper motions measured for isolated radio pulsars. The vast majority of binaries containing a compact object and a regular star spend most of their time in a quiescent state where no strong interactions occur between components. Detection of these binaries is extremely challenging and only few candidates have been detected through optical spectroscopy. Self-lensing represents a new means of detecting compact objects in binaries, where gravitational lensing of the light from the visible component by the compact object produces periodic optical flares. Here we show that current and planned large-area optical surveys can detect a significant number (∼100–10 000s) of these self-lensing binaries and provide insights into the properties of the compact lenses. We show that many of the predicted population of observable self-lensing binaries will be observed with multiple self-lensing flares; this both improves the chances of detection and also immediately distinguishes them from chance-alignment micro-lensing events. Through self-lensing we can investigate long – but previously hidden – stages of binary evolution and consequently provide new constraints on evolutionary models that impact the number and nature of double compact object mergers. We evaluate the redshift distribution of binary black hole (BBH), black hole–neutron star binary (BHNS), and binary neutron star (BNS) mergers, exploring the main sources of uncertainty: star formation rate (SFR) density, metallicity evolution, common envelope, mass transfer via Roche lobe overflow, natal kicks, core-collapse supernova model, and initial mass function. Among binary evolution processes, uncertainties on common envelope ejection have a major impact: the local merger rate density of BNSs varies from ∼103 to ∼20 Gpc−3 yr−1 if we change the common envelope efficiency parameter from αCE = 7 to 0.5, while the local merger rates of BBHs and BHNSs vary by a factor of ∼2–3. The BBH merger rate changes by one order of magnitude, when 1σ uncertainties on metallicity evolution are taken into account. In contrast, the BNS merger rate is almost insensitive to metallicity. Hence, BNSs are the ideal test bed to put constraints on uncertain binary evolution processes, such as common envelope and natal kicks. Only models assuming values of αCE ≳ 2 and moderately low natal kicks (depending on the ejected mass and the supernovae mechanism), result in a local BNS merger rate density within the 90 per cent credible interval inferred from the second gravitational-wave transient catalogue. In recent years, the number of pulsars with secure mass measurements has increased to a level that allows us to probe the underlying neutron star (NS) mass distribution in detail. We critically review the radio pulsar mass measurements. For the first time, we are able to analyze a sizable population of NSs with a flexible modeling approach that can effectively accommodate a skewed underlying distribution and asymmetric measurement errors. We find that NSs that have evolved through different evolutionary paths reflect distinctive signatures through dissimilar distribution peak and mass cutoff values. NSs in double NS and NS-white dwarf (WD) systems show consistent respective peaks at 1.33 M and 1.55 M, suggesting significant mass accretion (Δm 0.22 M) has occurred during the spin-up phase. The width of the mass distribution implied by double NS systems is indicative of a tight initial mass function while the inferred mass range is significantly wider for NSs that have gone through recycling. We find a mass cutoff at 2.1 M for NSs with WD companions, which establishes a firm lower bound for the maximum NS mass. This rules out the majority of strange quark and soft equation of state models as viable configurations for NS matter. The lack of truncation close to the maximum mass cutoff along with the skewed nature of the inferred mass distribution both enforce the suggestion that the 2.1 M limit is set by evolutionary constraints rather than nuclear physics or general relativity, and the existence of rare supermassive NSs is possible. © 2013. We report on the impact of a probabilistic prescription for compact remnant masses and kicks on massive binary population synthesis. We find that this prescription populates the putative mass gap between neutron stars and black holes with low-mass black holes. However, evolutionary effects reduce the number of X-ray binary candidates with low-mass black holes, consistent with the dearth of such systems in the observed sample. We further find that this prescription is consistent with the formation of heavier binary neutron stars such as GW190425, but overpredicts the masses of Galactic double neutron stars. The revised natal kicks, particularly increased ultra-stripped supernova kicks, do not directly explain the observed Galactic double neutron star orbital period–eccentricity distribution. Finally, this prescription allows for the formation of systems similar to the recently discovered extreme mass ratio binary GW190814, but only if we allow for the survival of binaries in which the common envelope is initiated by a donor crossing the Hertzsprung gap, contrary to our standard model. We compute rates of merging neutron stars (MNS) in different galaxies, as well as the cosmic MNS rate in different cosmological scenarios. Our aim is to provide predictions of kilonova rates for future observations both at low and high redshift. In the adopted galaxy models, the production of r-process elements either by MNS or core-collapse supernovae is taken into account. To compute the MNS rates, we adopt either a constant total time delay for merging (10 Myr) or a distribution function of such delays. We conclude (i) the observed present time MNS rate in our Galaxy is well reproduced either with a constant time delay or a distribution function ∝ t −1. (ii) The [Eu/Fe] versus [Fe/H] relation can be well reproduced with only MNS, if the time delay is short and constant. If a distribution function of delays is adopted, core-collapse supernovae are also required. (iii) The present time cosmic MNS rate can be well reproduced in several cosmological scenarios. (iv) Spiral galaxies are the major contributors to the cosmic MNS at all redshifts in hierarchical scenarios. In the pure luminosity evolution scenario, the spirals are the major contributors locally, whereas at high redshift ellipticals dominate. (v) The predicted cosmic MNS rate well agrees with the cosmic rate of short gamma-ray bursts, if the distribution function of delays is adopted in a cosmological hierarchical scenario observationally derived. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond transients of unknown origin(s) occurring at cosmological distances. Here we, for the first time, show time-integrated-luminosity functions and volumetric occurrence rates of non-repeating and repeating FRBs against redshift. The time-integrated-luminosity functions of non-repeating FRBs do not show any significant redshift evolution. The volumetric occurrence rates are almost constant during the past ∼10 Gyr. The nearly-constant rate is consistent with a flat trend of cosmic stellar-mass density traced by old stellar populations. Our findings indicate that the occurrence rate of non-repeating FRBs follows the stellar-mass evolution of long-living objects with ∼Gyr time-scales, favouring e.g. white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, as likely progenitors of non-repeating FRBs. In contrast, the occurrence rates of repeating FRBs may increase towards higher redshifts in a similar way to the cosmic star formation rate density or black hole accretion rate density if the slope of their luminosity function does not evolve with redshift. Short-living objects with ≲Myr time-scales associated with young stellar populations (or their remnants, e.g. supernova remnants, young pulsars, and magnetars) or active galactic nuclei might be favoured as progenitor candidates of repeating FRBs. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious extragalactic radio signals. Revealing their origin is one of the central foci in modern astronomy. Previous studies suggest that occurrence rates of non-repeating and repeating FRBs could be controlled by the cosmic stellar-mass density (CSMD) and cosmic star formation-rate density (CSFRD), respectively. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is one of the best future instruments to address this subject due to its high sensitivity and high-angular resolution. Here, we predict the number of FRBs to be detected with the SKA. In contrast to previous predictions, we estimate the detections of non-repeating and repeating FRBs separately, based on latest observational constraints on their physical properties including the spectral indices, FRB luminosity functions, and their redshift evolutions. We consider two cases of redshift evolution of FRB luminosity functions following either the CSMD or CSFRD. At |$z$| ≳ 2, |$z$| ≳ 6, and |$z$| ≳ 10, non-repeating FRBs will be detected with the SKA at a rate of ∼104, ∼102, and ∼10 (sky−1 d−1), respectively, if their luminosity function follows the CSMD evolution. At |$z$| ≳ 1, |$z$| ≳ 2, and |$z$| ≳ 4, sources of repeating FRBs will be detected at a rate of ∼103, ∼102, and ≲10 (sky−1 d−1), respectively, assuming that the redshift evolution of their luminosity function is scaled with the CSFRD. These numbers could change by about one order of magnitude depending on the assumptions on the CSMD and CSFRD. In all cases, abundant FRBs will be detected by the SKA, which will further constrain the luminosity functions and number density evolutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
