The Cretaceous black shales of Colombia are among the most important successions in the north of South America and have attracted the attention of many geoscientists and exploration companies over the last few decades, because of their high hydrocarbon potential and the presence of emerald deposits. However, many uncertainties still remain with regard to their tectonic setting, sequence stratigraphy, depositional environments, palaeoxygenation conditions, and organic matter preservation. In order to develop a more integrated picture of these different processes and conditions, we conducted a detailed sedimentological, inorganic geochemical (U, V, Ni, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ti, Mo, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ba) and sequence stratigraphic analysis of the Cretaceous black shales in the Magdalena-Tablazo Sub-Basin (Eastern Cordillera Basin) of Colombia. Eleven lithofacies and five lithofacies associations of a storm-dominated, siliciclastic-carbonate ramp were identified, which range from basin to shallow inner ramp environments. These facies were grouped into six third-order stratigraphic sequences showing high-order cycles of marine transgression with constrained regressive pulses during the late Valanginian to early Coniacian. The black shales succession represents deposition under anoxic bottom water with some intervals representing dysoxic-suboxic conditions. The evolution of the sedimentary environments and their palaeoxygenation history reflect tectonic and eustatic sea-level controls that 1) produced a variable orientation and position of the coastline throughout the Cretaceous; 2) conditioned the low-gradient ramp geometry (<0.3°) and 3) modified the oxygenation conditions in the Magdalena-Tablazo Sub-Basin. An improved understanding of the sedimentary setting during deposition of the Cretaceous black shales in the Magdalena-Tablazo Sub-Basin assists in highlighting the interplay between the mechanism of sedimentation and continuum anoxic conditions prevailing in a basin, as well the important role of nutrient input from continental runoff as a trigger of high productivity and extended anoxia conditions. The Tolhuaca Volcano near Lonquimay in south-central Chile has been the subject of several studies due to its geothermal manifestations, but little is known about the stratigraphy and reservoir potential of the Cura-Mallín Formation forming its basement. Field work and U-Pb dating of detrital zircons allow us to redefine this succession as the Cura-Mallín Group, consisting of the volcano-sedimentary Guapitrío Formation, sedimentary Río Pedregoso Formation, and volcano-sedimentary Mitrauquén Formation. The Río Pedregoso Formation can be subdivided into three formal units, namely the Quilmahue Member, Rucañanco Member, and Bío-Bío Member. The base of the Quilmahue Member interfingers laterally with the base of the Guapitrío Formation, for which a previous K/Ar date of 22.0 ± 0.9 Ma was apparently discarded by the original authors. However, this date is consistent with the stratigraphic position of the Quilmahue Member and new zircon dates from the overlying units, also coinciding with the initiation of an extensional phase in the Bíobío-Aluminé Basin. Deposition of the Quilmahue Member continued throughout the early Miocene, as confirmed by dates of 17.5 Ma reported by previous authors and 16.5 Ma obtained in this study. The Rucañanco Member was deposited during the Serravalian around 12.6 Ma, whereas the Bío-Bío Member was dated at the Serravalian-Tortonian limit (11.6 Ma). Although all three members were deposited in a fluvio-lacustrine environment, they were dominated respectively by flood plains with crevasse splays, lake margins with distributary mouth bars and Gilbert-type deltas, and distal braided and meandering rivers. Whereas the Quilmahue Member was deposited during basin extension, the Rucañanco Member was formed during a period of basin inversion and compression. Temporary tectonic quiescence during deposition of the Bío-Bío Member allowed denudation of the landscape, but around 9.5 Ma tectonism was renewed again during deposition of the Mitrauquén Formation. From a geothermal point of view, the Guapitrío Formation has a low potential to host significant reservoirs due to extensive hydrothermal alteration that produced secondary minerals clogging pore spaces and fractures. In the Río Pedregoso Formation, on the other hand, the Rucañanco Member seems to have the best reservoir potential, as it has relatively thick, semi-permeable sandstones and conglomerates deposited in a lake-margin environment. The Salar de Atacama Basin holds important information regarding the tectonic activity, sedimentary environments and their variations in northern Chile during Cretaceous times. About 4000 m of high-resolution stratigraphic columns of the Tonel, Purilactis and Barros Arana Formations reveal braided fluvial and alluvial facies, typical of arid to semi-arid environments, interrupted by scarce intervals with evaporitic, aeolian and lacustrine sedimentation, displaying an overall coarsening-upward trend. Clast-count and point-count data evidence the progressive erosion from Mesozoic volcanic rocks to Palaeozoic basement granitoids and deposits located around the Cordillera de Domeyko area, which is indicative of an unroofing process. The palaeocurrent data show that the source area was located to the west. The U/Pb detrital zircon geochronological data give maximum depositional ages of 149 Ma for the base of the Tonel Formation (Agua Salada Member), and 107 Ma for its middle member (La Escalera Member); 79 Ma for the lower Purilactis Formation (Limón Verde Member), and 73 Ma for the Barros Arana Formation. The sources of these zircons were located mainly to the west, and comprised from the Coastal Cordillera to the Precordillera. The ages and pulses record the tectonic activity during the Peruvian Phase, which can be split into two large events; an early phase, around 107 Ma, showing uplift of the Coastal Cordillera area, and a late phase around 79 Ma indicating an eastward jump of the deformation front to the Cordillera de Domeyko area. The lack of internal deformation and the thicknesses measured suggest that deposition of the units occurred in the foredeep zone of an eastward-verging basin. Abstract: This paper discusses a well-represented fossil record of cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes) from southern South America. The recovered samples allow the recognition of three assemblages with chronostratigraphic and paleogeographic value: i) typical Maastrichtian sharks and rays with affinities to eastern Pacific fauna, including the taxa Ischyrhiza chilensis, Serratolamna serrata, Centrophoroides sp. associated to Carcharias sp., and Dasyatidae indet.; ii) a scarce reworked assemblage of Paleocene–Early Eocene age including the taxa Otodus obliquus and Megascyliorhinus cooperi; iii) a rich assemblage with reworked taxa of Early to Middle Eocene age, together with autochthonous deposited Middle to Late Eocene taxa with close affinities to paleoichthyofaunas recovered from the North Atlantic, represented by Carcharias ‘hopei’, Odontaspis winkleri, Carcharoides catticus, Macrorhizodus praecursor, Carcharocles auriculatus, Striatolamia sp., Striatolamia macrota, Hexanchus agassizi, Notorhynchus sp., Myliobatis sp., Abdounia sp., Pristiophorus sp., Squatina sp., cf. Rhizoprionodon sp., Ischyodus sp., and one new species, Jaekelotodus bagualensis sp. nov. The studied samples include for the first time taxa with well established chronostratigraphic resolutions as well as taphonomic information that help clarifying the age of the fossil-bearing units. In addition, they provide relevant information about the evolution of the Magallanes (=Austral) Basin from the Upper Cretaceous to the Paleogene, suggesting a probable connection with the Quiriquina Basin of south-central Chile during the latest Cretaceous. Finally, the studied assemblages indicate a latitudinal pattern of distribution that provides valuable data on the environmental evolution and temperature of southern South America during the Paleogene.
