A novel metastable austenitic stainless steel denoted as 13Cr12Mn is obtained by adding 12 wt% Mn to 13Cr–5Ni–2Mo super‐martensitic stainless steel. The designed 13Cr12Mn exhibits a yield strength of 899 MPa, a tensile strength of 1068 MPa, and an elongation of 21.2%. The in situ hydrogen‐charging incremental step loading technique experiments are conducted to evaluate hydrogen embrittlement. The hydrogen‐induced cracking threshold stress of 13Cr12Mn is determined to be 961 MPa, which exceeds that of tempered S13Cr with a similar yield strength by 400 MPa. In addition, 13Cr12Mn also shows good resistance to general corrosion and pitting corrosion in alkaline solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Damage mechanics based on the cohesive zone model were applied to study the anodic dissolution stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in flat and U-shaped edge-notched specimens. The simulation results show that corrosion product films (CPFs) facilitate crack initiation in SCC due to the CPF-induced stress and CPF rupture. In the flat specimen, SCC susceptibility increases with the CPF thickness and CPF Young's modulus, while it decreases with CPF fracture strength. For the U-shaped edge-notched specimen, the normalised threshold stress intensity factor KISCC/KIC decreases with the CPF thickness and notch depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Finite element analyses were conducted to clarify the role of corrosion product films (CPFs) in stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Flat and U-shaped edge-notched specimens were investigated in terms of the CPF-induced stress in the metallic substrate and the stress in the CPF. For a U-shaped edge-notched specimen, the stress field in front of the notch tip is affected by the Young's modulus of the CPF and the CPF thickness and notch geometry. The CPF-induced tensile stress in the metallic substrate is superimposed on the applied load to increase the crack tip strain and facilitate localized plasticity deformation. In addition, the stress in the CPF surface contributes to the rupture of the CPFs. The results provide physical insights into the role of CPFs in SCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of nanocrystalline Cu–Cr alloys was high-throughput synthesized onto micromachined cantilever arrays by magnetron co-sputtering. Based on the consistent relationship between film-induced stress and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility, the effects of Cr content on the SCC susceptibility of Cu–Cr alloys in 0.2 M NH 3 ·H 2 O solution were determined via film-induced stress measurement. The results show that the film-induced tensile stress gradually decreased with the increasing Cr content, that is, the SCC susceptibility decreases. The measurement of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of metallic materials with a wide composition range is a daunting task. In this work, based on the consistent relationship between corrosion product film induced stress and SCC susceptibility, we present a high-throughput strategy to quickly evaluate the SCC susceptibility of metallic materials via in-situ stress measurements utilizing highly sensitive microcantilever arrays, combinatorial deposition and scanning laser beam. • Intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) is prone to occur along α/β phase boundaries and RGBs. • IGSCC is frequently arrested at a triple junction with Σ3 TB. • The Volta potentials of α/β phase boundaries and RGB are higher than that of Σ3 TB. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) and grain boundary characteristics in brass. The Volta potential and nature of the grain boundaries in H62 brass were studied by scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy and Electron Backscattered Diffraction, respectively. The α/β phase boundaries and random grain boundaries with low work functions can act as anodic areas to promote IGSCC propagation. Moreover, due to a combination of the inherent characteristics and high work function of Σ3 annealing twin boundaries (ATBs), IGSCC is successfully halted at a triple junction containing Σ3 ATB. The small tapered specimen was used to measure the crack initiation stress of hydrogen-induced cracking with a combination of tensile test and finite element method. Based on the regression analysis of measured crack location and depth on the specimen, the crack initiation location was predicted and then the corresponding crack initiation stress could be directly calculated. A critical relative distance of stress interference between adjacent cracks was found, and the stress on the predicted crack initiation location was proved not influenced by its adjacent cracks.
