Realizing the high-precision monitoring of wheat stripe rust over a large area is of great significance in ensuring the safety of wheat production. Existing studies have mostly focused on the fusion of multi-source data and the construction of key monitoring features to improve the accuracy of disease monitoring, with less consideration for the regional distribution characteristics of the disease. In this study, based on the occurrence and spatial distribution patterns of wheat stripe rust in the experimental area, we constructed a multi-source monitoring feature set, then utilized geographical detectors for feature selection that integrates the spatial-distribution differences of the disease. The research results show that the optimal monitoring feature set selected by the geographical detectors has a higher monitoring accuracy. Based on the Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Support Vector (SVM) models, the disease monitoring results demonstrate that the monitoring feature set constructed in this study has an overall accuracy in its disease monitoring that is 3.2%, 2.7%, and 4.3% higher, respectively, than that of the ReliefF method, with Kappa coefficient higher by 0.064, 0.044, and 0.087, respectively. Furthermore, the optimal monitoring feature set obtained by the geographical detectors method exhibits a higher stability, and the spatial distribution of wheat stripe rust in the monitoring results generated by the different models demonstrates good consistency. In contrast, the features selected by the ReliefF method exhibit significant spatial-distribution differences in the wheat stripe rust among the different monitoring results, indicating poor stability and consistency. Overall, incorporating information on disease spatial-distribution differences in stripe-rust monitoring can improve the accuracy and stability of disease monitoring, and it can provide data and methodological support for regional stripe-rust detection and accurate preventions. Wheat stripe rust poses a serious threat to wheat production. An effective prediction method is important for food security. In this study, we developed a prediction model for wheat stripe rust based on vegetation indices and meteorological features. First, based on time-series Sentinel-2 remote sensing images and meteorological data, wheat phenology (jointing date) was estimated using the harmonic analysis of time-series combined with average cumulative temperature. Then, vegetation indices were extracted based on phenological information. Meteorological features were screened using correlation analysis combined with independent t-test analysis. Finally, a random forest (RF) was used to construct a prediction model for wheat stripe rust. The results showed that the RF model using the input combination (phenological information-based vegetation indices and meteorological features) produced a higher prediction accuracy and a kappa coefficient of 88.7% and 0.772, respectively. The prediction model using phenological information-based vegetation indices outperformed the prediction model using single-date image-based vegetation indices, and the overall accuracy improved from 62.9% to 78.4%. These results indicated that the method combining phenological information-based vegetation indices and meteorological features can be used for wheat stripe rust prediction. Wheat stripe rust has a severe impact on wheat yield and quality. An effective prediction method is necessary for food security. In this study, we extract the optimal vegetation indices (VIs) sensitive to stripe rust at different time-periods, and develop a wheat stripe rust prediction model with satellite images to realize the multi-temporal prediction. First, VIs related to stripe rust stress are extracted as candidate features for disease prediction from time series Sentinel-2 images. Then, the optimal VI combinations are selected using sequential forward selection (SFS). Finally, the occurrence of wheat stripe rust in different time-periods is predicted using the support vector machine (SVM) method. The results of the features selected demonstrate that, before the jointing period, the optimal VIs are related to the biomass, pigment, and moisture of wheat. After the jointing period, the red-edge VIs related to the crop health status play important roles. The overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of the prediction model, which is based on SVM, is generally higher than those of the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and back-propagation neural network (BPNN) methods. The SVM method is more suitable for time series predictions of wheat stripe rust. The model obtained accuracy based on the optimal VI combinations and the SVM increased over time; the highest accuracy was 86.2%. These results indicate that the prediction model can provide guidance and suggestions for early disease prevention of the study site, and the method combines time series Sentinel-2 images and the SVM, which can be used to predict wheat stripe rust. Yellow rust is a worldwide disease that poses a serious threat to the safety of wheat production. Numerous studies on near-surface hyperspectral remote sensing at the leaf scale have achieved good results for disease monitoring. The next step is to monitor the disease at the field scale, which is of great significance for disease control. In our study, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a hyperspectral sensor was used to obtain hyperspectral images at the field scale. Vegetation indices (VIs) and texture features (TFs) extracted from the UAV-based hyperspectral images and their combination were used to establish partial least-squares regression (PLSR)-based disease monitoring models in different infection periods. In addition, we resampled the original images with 1.2 cm spatial resolution to images with different spatial resolutions (3 cm, 5 cm, 7 cm, 10 cm, 15 cm, and 20 cm) to evaluate the effect of spatial resolution on disease monitoring accuracy. The findings showed that the VI-based model had the highest monitoring accuracy (R2 = 0.75) in the mid-infection period. The TF-based model could be used to monitor yellow rust at the field scale and obtained the highest R2 in the mid- and late-infection periods (0.65 and 0.82, respectively). The VI-TF-based models had the highest accuracy in each infection period and outperformed the VI-based or TF-based models. The spatial resolution had a negligible influence on the VI-based monitoring accuracy, but significantly influenced the TF-based monitoring accuracy. Furthermore, the optimal spatial resolution for monitoring yellow rust using the VI-TF-based model in each infection period was 10 cm. Wheat yellow rust is one of the most destructive diseases in wheat production and significantly affects wheat quality and yield. Accurate and non-destructive identification of yellow rust is critical to wheat production management. Hyperspectral imaging technology has proven to be effective in identifying plant diseases. We investigated the feasibility of identifying yellow rust on wheat leaves using spectral features and textural features (TFs) of hyperspectral images. First, the hyperspectral images were preprocessed, and healthy and yellow rust-infected samples were obtained by creating regions of interest. Second, the extraction of spectral reflectance characteristics and vegetation indices (VIs) were performed from the preprocessed hyperspectral images, and the TFs were extracted using the grey-level co-occurrence matrix from the images transformed by principal component analysis. Third, the successive projections algorithm was employed to choose the optimum wavebands (OWs), and correlation-based feature selection was employed to select the optimal VIs and TFs (those most sensitive to yellow rust and having minimal redundancy between features). Finally, identification models of wheat yellow rust were established using a support vector machine and different features. Six OWs (538, 598, 689, 702, 751, and 895 nm), four VIs (nitrogen reflectance index, photochemical reflectance index, greenness index, and anthocyanin reflectance index), and four TFs (correlation 1, correlation 2, entropy 2, and second moment 3) were selected. The identification models based on the OWs, VIs, and TFs provided overall accuracies of 83.3%, 89.5%, and 86.5%, respectively. The TF results were especially encouraging. The models with the combination of spectral features and TFs exhibited better performance than those using the spectral features or TFs alone. The accuracies of the models with the combined features (OWs and TFs, Vis, and TFs) were 90.6% and 95.8%, respectively. These values were 7.3% and 6.3% higher, respectively, than those of the models using only the OWs or VIs. The model with the combined feature (VIs and TFs) had the highest accuracy (95.8%) and was used to map the yellow rust lesions on wheat leaves with different damage levels. The results showed that the yellow rust lesions on the leaves could be identified accurately. Overall, the combination of spectral features and TFs of hyperspectral images significantly improved the identification accuracy of wheat yellow rust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
