We report a detailed study of the magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic properties of Ce$_2$Te$_5$ single crystals, a layered $f$-electron van der Waals magnet. Four consecutive transitions at $\sim$ 5.2, 2.1, 0.9, and 0.4 K were observed in the $ac$-plane electrical resistivity $\rho$(T), which were further confirmed in specific heat $C_\textrm{p}$(T) measurements. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility $\chi$(T), the magnetic-field variation of $\rho$(T), and the increase of the first transition temperature ($T_\textrm{c} \sim$ 5.2 K) with applied magnetic field indicates ferromagnetic order, while the decrease of the other transitions with field suggests different states with dominant antiferromagnetic interactions below $T_2 \sim$ 2.1 K, $T_3 \sim$ 0.9 K, and $T_4$ = 0.4 K. Critical behavior analysis around $T_\textrm{c}$ that gives critical exponents $\beta = 0.31(2)$, $\gamma = 0.99(2)$, $\delta = 4.46(1)$, $T_\textrm{c} = 5.32(1)$ K indicates that Ce$_2$Te$_5$ shows a three-dimensional magnetic critical behavior. Moreover, the Hall resistivity $\rho_{\textrm{xy}}$ indicates that Ce$_2$Te$_5$ is a multi-band system with a relatively high electron mobility $\sim 2900$ cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ near $T_\textrm{c}$, providing further opportunities for future device applications.

Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) emerges from intertwined spin and charge degrees of freedom in the form of ferromagnetic clusters also known as trapped magnetic polarons. As a result, CMR is rarely observed in antiferromagnetic materials. Here we use electron spin resonance (ESR) to reveal microscopic evidence for the formation of magnetic polarons in antiferromagnetic Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$. First, we observe a reduction of the Eu$^{2+}$ ESR linewidth as a function of the applied magnetic field consistent with ferromagnetic clusters that are antiferromagnetically coupled. Additionally, the Eu$^{2+}$ lineshape changes markedly below T' ~ 200 K, a temperature scale that coincides with the onset of CMR. The combination of these two effects provide strong evidence that magnetic polarons grow in size below T' and start influencing the macroscopic properties of the system., 7 pages, 4 figures. Electrons at the border of localization generate exotic states of matter across all classes of strongly correlated electron materials and many other quantum materials with emergent functionality. Heavy electron metals are a model example, in which magnetic interactions arise from the opposing limits of localized and itinerant electrons. This remarkable duality is intimately related to the emergence of a plethora of novel quantum matter states such as unconventional superconductivity, electronic-nematic states, hidden order and most recently topological states of matter such as topological Kondo insulators and Kondo semimetals and putative chiral superconductors. The outstanding challenge is that the archetypal Kondo lattice model that captures the underlying electronic dichotomy is notoriously difficult to solve for real materials. Here we show, using the prototypical strongly-correlated antiferromagnet CeIn$_3$, that a multi-orbital periodic Anderson model embedded with input from ab initio bandstructure calculations can be reduced to a simple Kondo-Heisenberg model, which captures the magnetic interactions quantitatively. We validate this tractable Hamiltonian via high-resolution neutron spectroscopy that reproduces accurately the magnetic soft modes in CeIn$_3$, which are believed to mediate unconventional superconductivity. Our study paves the way for a quantitative understanding of metallic quantum states such as unconventional superconductivity.

Here we investigate the thermodynamic and electronic properties of Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$ single crystals. Electrical transport data show that Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$ has a semiconducting ground state with a relatively narrow band gap of $320$~meV. Magnetic susceptibility data reveal antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures, whereas ferromagnetic interactions dominate at high temperature. Specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements reveal three phase transitions at $T_{N1}=9.3$~K, $T_{N2} =8.3$~K, and $T_{N3} =4.3$~K. Unlike Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_6$, a related europium-containing Zintl compound, no colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) is observed in Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$. We attribute the absence of CMR to the smaller carrier density and the larger distance between Eu ions and In-Sb polyhedra in Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$. Our results indicate that Eu$_{11}$InSb$_9$ has potential applications as a thermoelectric material through doping or as a long-wavelength detector due to its narrow gap., 5 pages, 4 figures

Noncentrosymmetric Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ has attracted a lot of attention as a candidate for strongly correlated topological material, yet its experimental ground state remains a matter of contention. Two conflicting scenarios have emerged from a comparison to prototypical Kondo insulator Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pt$_{3}$: either Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ is a spin-orbit-driven topological semimetal or a Kondo insulator with smaller Kondo coupling than its Pt counterpart. Here we determine the ground state of Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ via electrical resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure, which is a clean symmetry-preserving tuning parameter that increases hybridization but virtually preserves spin-orbit coupling. Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ becomes more insulating under pressure, which is a signature of Ce-based Kondo insulating materials. Its small zero-pressure gap increases quadratically with pressure, similar to the behavior observed in the series Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$)$_{3}$, which indicates that Pt substitution and applied pressure have a similar effect. Our result not only demonstrates that Kondo coupling, rather than spin-orbit coupling, is the main tuning parameter in this class of materials, but it also establishes that Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ has a narrow-gap Kondo insulating ground state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 Figures, includes Supplementary Information (6 pages, 5 Figures)

UTe2 is a newly-discovered unconventional superconductor wherein multicomponent topological superconductivity is anticipated based on the presence of two superconducting transitions and time-reversal symmetry breaking in the superconducting state. The observation of two superconducting transitions, however, remains controversial. Here we demonstrate that UTe2 single crystals displaying an optimal superconducting transition temperature at 2 K exhibit a single transition and remarkably high quality supported by their small residual heat capacity in the superconducting state and large residual resistance ratio. Our results shed light on the intrinsic superconducting properties of UTe2 and bring into question whether UTe2 is a multicomponent superconductor at ambient pressure.

The Berry curvature in magnetic systems is attracting interest due to the potential tunability of topological features via the magnetic structure. $f$-electrons, with their large spin-orbit coupling, abundance of non-collinear magnetic structures and high electronic tunability, are attractive candidates to search for tunable topological properties. In this study, we measure anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the distorted kagom$\acute{e}$ heavy fermion antiferromagnet U$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$. A large intrinsic AHE in high fields reveals the presence of a large Berry curvature. Moreover, the fields required to obtain the large Berry curvature are significantly different between $B \parallel a$ and $B \parallel a^*$, providing a mechanism to control the topological response in this system. Theoretical calculations illustrate that this sensitivity may be due to the heavy fermion character of the electronic structure. These results shed light on the Berry curvature of a strongly correlated band structure in magnetically frustrated heavy fermion materials, but also emphasize 5$f$-electrons as an ideal playground for studying field-tuned topological states.

We present magnetotransport data on the ferrimagnet GdMn$_6$Sn$_6$. From the temperature dependent data we are able to extract a large instrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall effect $\sigma_{xz}^{int} \sim$ 32 $\Omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$ and $\sigma_{xy}^{int} \sim$ 223 $\Omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$, which is comparable to values found in other systems also containing kagome nets of transition metals. From our transport anisotropy, as well as our density functional theory calculations, we argue that the system is electronically best described as a three dimensional system. Thus, we show that reduced dimensionality is not a strong requirement for obtaining large Berry phase contributions to transport properties. In addition, the coexistence of rare-earth and transition metal magnetism makes the hexagonal MgFe$_6$Ge$_6$ structure type a promising system to tune the electronic and magnetic properties in future studies.

Kondo insulators are predicted to undergo an insulator-to-metal transition under applied magnetic field, yet the extremely high fields required to date have prohibited a comprehensive investigation of the nature of this transition. Here we show that Ce3Bi4Pd3 provides an ideal platform for this investigation, owing to the unusually small magnetic field of B ~ 11 T required to overcome its Kondo insulating gap. Above Bc, we find a magnetic field-induced Fermi liquid state whose characteristic energy scale T_FL collapses near Bc in a manner indicative of a magnetic field-tuned quantum critical point. A direct connection is established with the process of Kondo singlet formation, which yields a broad maximum in the magnetic susceptibility as a function of temperature in weak magnetic fields that evolves progressively into a sharper transition at Bc as T -> 0., 10 pages including 10 figures

The effects of uniaxial compressive stress on the normal state $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance properties of the unconventional superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ are reported. The paramagnetic shifts of both planar and apical oxygen sites show pronounced anomalies near the nominal $\mathbf{a}$-axis strain $\varepsilon_{aa}\equiv\varepsilon_v$, that maximizes the superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c}$. The spin susceptibility weakly increases on lowering the temperature below $T$$\simeq$10 K, consistent with an enhanced density of states associated with passing the Fermi energy through a van Hove singularity. Although such a Lifshitz transition occurs in the $\gamma$ band, formed by the Ru $d_{xy}$ states hybridized with in-plane O $p_{\pi}$ orbitals, the large Hund's coupling renormalizes the uniform spin susceptibilty, which, in turn, affects the hyperfine fields of all nuclei. We estimate this \textquotedblleft Stoner\textquotedblright\ renormalization, $S,$ by combining the data with first-principles calculations and conclude that this is an important part of the strain effect, with implications for superconductivity., Comment: 15 pages, 9+6 figures, 0+1 table

SmB6 is a candidate topological Kondo insulator that displays surface conduction at low temperatures. Here, we perform torque magnetization measurements as a means to detect de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in SmB6 crystals grown by aluminum flux. We find that dHvA oscillations occur in single crystals containing embedded aluminum, originating from the flux used to synthesize SmB6. Measurements on a sample with multiple, unconnected aluminum inclusions show that aluminum crystallizes in a preferred orientation within the SmB6 cubic lattice. The presence of aluminum is confirmed through bulk susceptibility measurements, but does not show a signature in transport measurements.

We present nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements performed on single crystalline \ccag{}, a member of a recently discovered family of heavy fermion materials Ce$_2M$Al$_7$Ge$_4$ ($M$ = Co, Ir, Ni, or Pd). Previous measurements indicated a strong Kondo interaction as well as magnetic order below $T_M = 1.8$ K. Our NMR spectral measurements show that the Knight shift $K$ is proportional to the bulk magnetic susceptibility $��$ at high temperatures. A clear Knight shift anomaly ($K \not\propto ��$) is observed at coherence temperatures $T^* \sim 17.5$ K for $H_0 \parallel \hat{c}$ and 10 K for $H_0 \parallel \hat{a}$ at the ${}^{59}$Co site, and $T^* \sim 12.5$ K at the ${}^{27}$Al(3) site for $H_0 \parallel \hat{a}$ characteristic of the heavy fermion nature of this compound. At high temperatures the ${}^{59}$Co NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ is dominated by spin fluctuations of the 4$f$ local moments with a weak metallic background. The spin fluctuations probed by ${}^{59}$Co NMR are anisotropic and larger in the basal plane than in the $c$ direction. Furthermore, we find $(T_1TK)^{-1} \propto T^{-1/2}$ at the ${}^{59}$Co site as expected for a Kondo system for $T > T^*$ and $T> T_K$. ${}^{59}$Co NQR \slrr{} measurements at low temperatures indicate slowing down of spin fluctuations above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_M \sim 1.8$ K. A weak ferromagnetic character of fluctuations around $\mathbf{q}=0$ is evidenced by an increase of $��T$ versus $T$ above the magnetic ordering temperature. We also find good agreement between the observed and calculated electric field gradients at all observed sites.

Quantum critical points (QCPs) are widely accepted as a source of a diverse set of collective quantum phases of matter. A central question is how the order parameters of phases near a QCP interact and determine the fundamental character of the critical dynamics which drive the quantum critical behavior. One of the most interesting proposals for the quantum critical behavior that occurs in correlated electron systems is that the behavior may arise from local, as opposed to long wavelength, critical fluctuations of the order parameter. The local criticality is believed to give rise to energy over temperature ($E/T$) scaling of the dynamic susceptibility with a fractional exponent near the quantum critical point (QCP). Here we show that $E/T$ scaling is indeed observed for CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ but on closer inspection, the fluctuations can be separated into two components, implying that multiple order parameters play an important role in the unconventional critical behavior. Additionally, when the fluctuations corresponding to the magnetically ordered side of the phase diagram are separated, they are found to be three dimensional and to obey the scaling behavior expected for long wavelength fluctuations near an itinerant antiferromagnetic QCP., 12 pages, 11 figures

Applied pressure drives the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_{5}$ towards a quantum critical point that becomes hidden by a dome of unconventional superconductivity. Magnetic fields suppress this superconducting dome, unveiling the quantum phase transition of local character. Here, we show that $5\%$ magnetic substitution at the Ce site in CeRhIn$_{5}$, either by Nd or Gd, induces a zero-field magnetic instability inside the superconducting state. This magnetic state not only should have a different ordering vector than the high-field local-moment magnetic state, but it also competes with the latter, suggesting that a spin-density-wave phase is stabilized in zero field by Nd and Gd impurities - similarly to the case of Ce$_{0.95}$Nd$_{0.05}$CoIn$_{5}$. Supported by model calculations, we attribute this spin-density wave instability to a magnetic-impurity driven condensation of the spin excitons that form inside the unconventional superconducting state.

Here we investigate single crystals of CaCo$_{5}$As$_{3}$ by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction, microprobe, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and pressure-dependent transport measurements. CaCo$_{5}$As$_{3}$ shares the same structure of CaFe$_{4}$As$_{3}$ with an additional Co atom filling a lattice vacancy and undergoes a magnetic transition at $T_{M} = 16$ K associated with a frustrated magnetic order. CaCo$_{5}$As$_{3}$ displays metallic behavior and its Sommerfeld coefficient ($\gamma = 70$ mJ/mol.K$^{2}$) indicates a moderate enhancement of electron-electron correlations. Transport data under pressures to $2.5$ GPa reveal a suppression of $T_{M}$ at a rate of $-0.008$ K/GPa. First-principle electronic structure calculations show a complex 3D band structure and magnetic moments that depend on the local environment at each Co site. Our results are compared with previous data on CaFe$_{4}$As$_{3}$ and provide a scenario for a magnetically frustrated ground state in this family of compounds.

We report the synthesis, crystal structure and characterization by means of single crystal x-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, magnetic, thermal and transport measurements of the new heavy fermion compounds Ce$_{2}$MAl$_{7}$Ge$_{4}$ (M = Co, Ir, Ni, Pd). These compounds crystallize in a noncentrosymmetic tetragonal space group P\={4}2$_{1}$m, consisting of layers of square nets of Ce atoms separated by Ge-Al and M-Al-Ge blocks. Ce$_{2}$CoAl$_{7}$Ge$_{4}$, Ce$_{2}$IrAl$_{7}$Ge$_{4}$ and Ce$_{2}$NiAl$_{7}$Ge$_{4}$ order magnetically behavior below $T_{M}=$ 1.8, 1.6, and 0.8 K, respectively. There is no evidence of magnetic ordering in Ce$_{2}$PdAl$_{7}$Ge$_{4}$ down to 0.4 K. The small amount of entropy released in the magnetic state of Ce$_{2}$MAl$_{7}$Ge$_{4}$ (M = Co, Ir, Ni) and the reduced specific heat jump at $T_M$ suggest a strong Kondo interaction in these materials. Ce$_{2}$PdAl$_{7}$Ge$_{4}$ shows non-Fermi liquid behavior, possibly due to the presence of a nearby quantum critical point., Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. B

From a systematic study of the electrical resistivity $\rho(T,H)$, magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T,H)$, isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ and the specific heat $C(T,H)$, a temperature-magnetic field ($T$-$H$) phase diagram has been established for GdCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$AsO ($x = 0$ and $0.05$) polycrystalline compounds. GdCoAsO undergoes two long-range magnetic transitions: ferromagnetic (FM) transition of Co $3d$ electrons ($T_\textup{C}^\textup{Co}$) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition of Gd $4f$ electrons ($T_\textup{N}^\textup{Gd}$). For the Fe-doped sample ($x=0.05$), an extra magnetic reorientation transition takes place below $T_\textup{N}^\textup{Gd}$, which is likely associated with Co moments. The two magnetic species of Gd and Co are coupled antiferromagnetically to give rise to ferrimagnetic (FIM) behavior in the magnetic susceptibility. Upon decreasing the temperature ($T < T_\textup{C}^\textup{Co}$), the magnetocrystalline anisotropy breaks up the FM order of Co by aligning the moments with the local easy axes of the various grains, leading to a spin reorientation transition at $T_\textup{R}^\textup{Co}$. By applying a magnetic field, $T_\textup{R}^\textup{Co}$ monotonically decreases to lower temperatures, while the $T_\textup{N}^\textup{Gd}$ is relatively robust against the external field. On the other hand, the applied magnetic field pulls the magnetization of grains from the local easy direction to the field direction via a first-order reorientation transition, with the transition field ($H_\textup{M}$) increasing upon cooling the temperature., Comment: accepted by physical Review B 6 figures and 7 pages

The easily tuned balance among competing interactions in Kondo-lattice metals allows access to a zero-temperature, continuous transition between magnetically ordered and disordered phases, a quantum-critical point (QCP). Indeed, these highly correlated electron materials are prototypes for discovering and exploring quantum-critical states. Theoretical models proposed to account for the strange thermodynamic and electrical transport properties that emerge around the QCP of a Kondo lattice assume the presence of an indefinitely large number of itinerant charge carriers. Here, we report a systematic transport and thermodynamic investigation of the Kondo-lattice system CeNi$_{2-��}$As$_2$ ($��$$\thickapprox$0.28) as its antiferromagnetic order is tuned by pressure and magnetic field to zero-temperature boundaries. These experiments show that the very small but finite carrier density of $\sim$0.032 $e^-$/f.u. in CeNi$_{2-��}$As$_2$ leads to unexpected transport signatures of quantum criticality and the delayed development of a fully coherent Kondo lattice state with decreasing temperature. The small carrier density and associated semi-metallicity of this Kondo-lattice material favor an unconventional, local-moment type of quantum criticality and raise the specter of Nozi��res exhaustion idea that an insufficient number of conduction-electron spins to separately screen local moments requires collective Kondo screening., 15+7 pages, 4+5 figures in Proc. We report the phase diagram of the doping series U_2Pt_xRh_(1-x)C_2, studied through measurements of resistivity, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility. The Neel temperature of U_2RhC_2 of ~ 22 K is suppressed with increasing Pt content, reaching zero temperature close to x=0.7, where we observed signatures of increased quantum fluctuations. In addition, evidence is presented that the antiferromagnetic state undergoes a spin-reorientation transition upon application of an applied magnetic field. This transition shows non-monotonic behaviour as a function of x, peaking at around x=0.3. Superconductivity is observed for x>=0.9, with T_c increasing with increasing x. The reduction in T_c and increase in residual resistivity with decreasing Pt content is inconsistent with the extension of the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory to unconventional superconductivity., 7 pages, 9 figures

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the $^{195}$Pt nucleus in an aligned powder of the moderately heavy-fermion material U2PtC2 are consistent with spin-triplet pairing in its superconducting state. Across the superconducting transition temperature and to much lower temperatures, the NMR Knight shift is temperature independent for field both parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis, expected for triplet equal-spin pairing superconductivity. The NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T$_1$, in the normal state, exhibits characteristics of ferromagnetic fluctuations, compatible with an enhanced Wilson ratio. In the superconducting state, 1/T$_1$ follows a power law with temperature without a coherence peak giving additional support that U$_2$PtC$_2$ is an unconventional superconductor. Bulk measurements of the AC-susceptibility and resistivity indicate that the upper critical field exceeds the Pauli limiting field for spin-singlet pairing and is near the orbital limiting field, an additional indication for spin-triplet pairing.

Single crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements are reported for the new tetragonal compound Ce$_{2}$PdGe$_{3}$, which forms in the space group $P4_{2}/mmc$ (\#131) $-$ a relative of the $\alpha$-ThSi$_2$-type structure. Measurements reveal a two-part antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_{\rm{N,1}}$ $=$ 10.7 K and $T_{\rm{N,2}}$ $=$ 9.6 K and subsequent ferromagnetic ordering near $T_{\rm{C}}$ $\approx$ 2.25 K. The ordered ground state emerges from a lattice of Ce ions that are hybridized with the conduction electrons, as revealed by the enhanced electronic coefficient of the specific heat $\gamma$ $\approx$ 50 mJ/mol-Ce-K$^2$ (extrapolated to $T$ $=$ 0 for $T$ $, Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We report the pressure response of charge-density-wave (CDW) and ferromagnetic (FM) phases of the rare-earth intermetallic SmNiC2 up to 5.5 GPa. The CDW transition temperature (T_{CDW}), which is reflected as a sharp inflection in the electrical resistivity, is almost independent of pressure up to 2.18 GPa but is strongly enhanced at higher pressures, increasing from 155.7 K at 2.2 GPa to 279.3 K at 5.5 GPa. Commensurate with the sharp increase in T_{CDW}, the first-order FM phase transition, which decreases with applied pressure, bifurcates into the upper (T_{M1}) and lower (T_c) phase transitions and the lower transition changes its nature to second order above 2.18 GPa. Enhancement both in the residual resistivity and the Fermi-liquid T^2 coefficient A near 3.8 GPa suggests abundant magnetic quantum fluctuations that arise from the possible presence of a FM quantum critical point., 5 pages, 5 figures

We have carried out a comprehensive study of the UCo1-xFexGe series across the entire range of compositions 0, 7 pages, 7 figures

We synthesized a series of GdFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO polycrystalline samples ($0 \leq x \leq 1$) by using a solid state reaction method and present a systematic study on the physical properties by means of electrical resistivity $��(T)$, magnetic susceptibility $��(T)$ and specific heat $C(T)$. The parent compound GdFeAsO undergoes a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition associated with Fe 3d-electrons around 130 K, followed by an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition of Gd at $T^\textup{Gd}_\textup{N} \approx$ 4 K. The SDW transition is quickly suppressed by Fe/Co substitution and superconductivity appears in a narrow doping range of $0.05 < x < 0.25$, showing a maximum $T_\textup{sc}$ $\approx$ 20 K around $x = 0.1$. On the other hand, the 4f-electrons of Gd are antiferromagnetically ordered over the entire doping concentration ($0 \leq x \leq 1$), while the Co 3d-electrons exhibit a ferromagnetic (FM) transition above $x \approx 0.8$, with the Curie temperature ($T^\textup{Co}_\textup{C}$) reaching 75 K in GdCoAsO. These two magnetic species (Gd and Co) are coupled antiferromagnetically to give rise to ferrimagnetic behavior in magnetic susceptibility on the Co-rich side. For $0.7 \leq x < 1.0$, the system undergoes a possible magnetic reorientation below $T^\textup{Gd}_\textup{N}$., 8 pages, 8 figures

We study the interplay of 3d and 4f electrons in the iron pnictides CeFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO and GdFe$_{1-y}$Co$_y$AsO, which correspond to two very different cases of $4f$-magnetic moment. Both CeFeAsO and GdFeAsO undergo a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition associated with Fe 3d electrons at high temperatures, which is rapidly suppressed by Fe/Co substitution. Superconductivity appears in a narrow doping range: $0.05 < x < 0.2$ for CeFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO and $0.05 < y < 0.25$ for GdFe$_{1-y}$Co$_y$AsO, showing a maximum transition temperature $T_\textup{sc}$ of about 13.5 K for Ce and 19 K for Gd. In both compounds, the $4f$-electrons form an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at low temperatures over the entire doping range and Co 3d electrons are ferromagnetically ordered on the Co-rich side; the Curie temperature reaches $T_\textup{C}^\textup{Co} \approx$ 75 K at $x = 1$ and $y = 1$. In the Ce-compounds, the N��el temperature $T_\textup{N}^\textup{Ce}$ increases upon suppressing the SDW transition of Fe and then remains nearly unchanged with further increasing Co concentration up to $x \simeq 0.8$ ($T_\textup{N}^\textup{Ce}\approx$ 4 K). Furthermore, evidence of Co-induced polarization on Ce-moments is observed on the Co-rich side. In the Gd-compounds, the two magnetic species of Gd and Co are coupled antiferromagnetically to give rise to ferrimagnetic behavior in the magnetic susceptibility on the Co-rich side. For $0.7 \leq y < 1.0$, the system undergoes a possible magnetic reorientation below the N��el temperature of Gd ($T_\textup{N}^\textup{Gd}$). Our results suggest that the effects of both electron hybridizations and magnetic exchange coupling between the 3d-4f electrons give rise to a rich phase diagram in the rare-earth iron pnictides., 13 pages, 15 figures

Flux-grown single crystals of PuPt$_2$In$_7$ are characterized and found to be both non-superconducting and non-magnetic down to 2 K. The Sommerfeld specific heat coefficient of $\sim 250$ mJ/mol K$^2$ indicates heavy fermion behavior. We report the results of generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+$U$ calculations of PuPt$_2$In$_7$ and as yet unsynthesized isovalent PuPt$_2$Ga$_7$. The strength of the $c$-$f$ hybridization of PuPt$_2$In$_7$ is similar to the PuCoIn$_5$ superconductor. The bare and $f$-weighted susceptibility within the constant-matrix-element approximation is calculated, showing a maximum along the $q_z$ direction at $q_x = q_y = 0.5$. A similar and slightly stronger maximum is also found in the structurally related heavy-fermion materials PuCoGa$_5$ and PuCoIn$_5$. We report specific heat capacity measurements on a LiFeAs single crystal at temperatures down to 400 mK and magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla. A small specific heat jump at Tc and finite residual density of states at T=0 K in the superconducting (SC) state indicate that there are strong unitary scatterers that lead to states within the SC gap. A sub-linear magnetic field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient \gamma(H) at T=0 K is equally well fitted by both a nodal d-wave gap as well as a sign changing multiband \pm s-wave gap. When impurity effects are taken into account, however, the linear temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat C_{el}/T at low temperatures argues against a nodal d-wave superconducting gap. We conclude that the SC state of LiFeAs is most compatible with the multiband \pm s-wave SC state with the gap values \Delta_{small}=0.46 \Delta_{large}., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Single crystals of (Ca1-xLax)10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 (x = 0 to 0.182) superconductors have been grown and characterized by X-ray, microprobe, transport and thermodynamic measurements. Features in the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and two kinks in the derivative of the electrical resistivity around 100 K in the x = 0 compound support the existence of decoupled structural and magnetic phase transitions. With La doping, the structural/magnetic phase transitions are suppressed and a half-dome of superconductivity with a maximal Tc around 26 K is observed in the temperature-concentration phase diagram., Comment: The affiliations are corrected. We report soft point-contact spectroscopy studies of URu2Si2 both in the hidder order (HO) and the large-moment antiferromagnetic (LMAF) states accessed by pressure. In the HO state at ambient pressure, the spectroscopy shows two asymmetric peaks around the Fermi energy that emerge below the hidden order temperature T_{HO}. In the LMAF state at higher pressures, the spectra are remarkably similar to those in the HO state, indicating a similar Fermi surface gapping in the HO and LMAF states and providing a new clue to unraveling the puzzling HO state., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted to be published in Phys. Anisotropic, spatially textured electronic states often emerge when the symmetry of the underlying crystalline structure is lowered. However, the possibility recently has been raised that novel electronic quantum states with real-space texture could arise in strongly correlated systems even without changing the underlying crystalline structure. Here we report evidence for such texture in the superconducting quantum fluid that is induced by pressure in the heavy-fermion compound CeRhIn5. When long-range antiferromagnetic order coexists with unconventional superconductivity, there is a significant temperature difference between resistively- and thermodynamically-determined transitions into the superconducting state, but this difference disappears in the absence of magnetism. Anisotropic transport behaviour near the superconducting transition in the coexisting phase signals the emergence of textured superconducting planes that are nucleated preferentially along the {100} planes and that appear without a change in crystal symmetry. We show that CeRhIn5 is not unique in exhibiting a difference between resistive and bulk superconducting transition temperatures, indicating that textured superconductivity may be a general consequence of coexisting orders., 8 pages, 9 figures

We report extensive measurements on a new compound (Yb0.24Sn0.76)Ru that crystallizes in the cubic CsCl structure. Valence band photoemission and L3 x-ray absorption show no divalent component in the 4f configuration of Yb. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) indicates that the eight-fold degenerate J-multiplet of Yb3+ is split by the crystalline electric field (CEF) into a {\Gamma}7 doublet ground state and a {\Gamma}8 quartet at an excitation energy 20 meV. The magnetic susceptibility can be fit very well by this CEF scheme under the assumption that a {\Gamma}6 excited state resides at 32 meV; however, the {\Gamma}8/{\Gamma}6 transition expected at 12 meV was not observed in the INS. The resistivity follows a Bloch- Gr\"uneisen law shunted by a parallel resistor, as is typical of systems subject to phonon scattering with no apparent magnetic scattering. All of these properties can be understood as representing simple local moment behavior of the trivalent Yb ion. At 1 K, there is a peak in specific heat that is too broad to represent a magnetic phase transition, consistent with absence of magnetic reflections in neutron diffraction. On the other hand, this peak also is too narrow to represent the Kondo effect in the {\Gamma}7 ground state doublet. On the basis of the field-dependence of the specific heat, we argue that antiferromagnetic shortrange order (possibly co-existing with Kondo physics) occurs at low temperatures. The long-range magnetic order is suppressed because the Yb site occupancy is below the percolation threshold for this disordered compound.

We use heat capacity measurements as a function of field rotation to identify the nodal gap structure of CeIrIn5 at pressures to 2.05 GPa, deep inside its superconducting dome. A four-fold oscillation in the heat capacity at 0.3 K is observed for all pressures but with its sign reversed between 1.50 and 0.90 GPa. On the basis of recent theoretical models for the field-angle dependent specific heat, all data, including the sign reversal, imply a d{x^2-y^2} order parameter with nodes along [110], which constrains theoretical models of the pairing mechanism in CeIrIn5., Comment: To appear in Phys. We report results of $^{59}$Co nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on a single crystal of superconducting PuCoGa5 in its normal state. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates and the Knight shifts as a function of temperature reveal an anisotropy of spin fluctuations with finite wave vector q. By comparison with the isostructural members, we conclude that antiferromagnetic XY-type anisotropy of spin fluctuations plays an important role in mediating superconductivity in these heavy fermion materials., Published in Phys. We investigated the effect of electron and hole doping on the high-field low-temperature superconducting state in CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring specific heat of CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$M$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with M=Sn, Cd and Hg and $x$ up to 0.33% at temperatures down to 0.1\,K and fields up to 14\,T. Although both Cd- and Hg-doping (hole-doping) suppresses the zero-field $T_c$ monotonically, $H_{c2}$ increases with small amounts of doping and has a maximum around $x$=0.2% (M=Cd). On the other hand, with Sn-doping (electron-doping) both zero-field $T_c$ and $H_{c2}$ decrease monotonically. The critical temperature for the high-field low-temperature superconducting state (so called {\it Q}-state) correlates with $H_{c2}$ and $T_c$, which we interpret in support of the superconducting origin of this state., Phys. Magnetic susceptibility results for single crystals of the new cubic compounds UT$_2$Al$_{20}$ (T=Mn, V, and Mo) are reported. Magnetization, specific heat, resistivity, and neutron diffraction results for a single crystal and neutron diffraction and inelastic spectra for a powder sample are reported for UMn$_2$Al$_{20}$. For T = V and Mo, temperature independent Pauli paramagnetism is observed. For UMn$_2$Al$_{20}$, a ferromagnetic transition is observed in the magnetic susceptibility at $T_c$ = 20 K. The specific heat anomaly at $T_c$ is very weak while no anomaly in the resistivity is seen at $T_c$. We discuss two possible origins for this behavior of UMn$_2$Al$_{20}$: moderately small moment itinerant ferromagnetism, or induced local moment ferromagnetism., 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. rev. The dynamic susceptibility chi"(deltaE), measured by inelastic neutron scattering measurements, shows a broad peak centered at Emax = 16.5 meV for the cubic actinide compound URu2Zn20 and 7 meV at the (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) zone boundary for the rare earth counterpart compound YbFe2Zn20. For URu2Zn20, the low temperature susceptibility and magnetic specific heat coefficient gamma = Cmag/T take the values chi = 0.011 emu/mole and gamma = 190 mJ/mole-K2 at T = 2 K. These values are roughly three times smaller, and Emax is three times larger, than recently reported for the related compound UCo2Zn20, so that chi and gamma scale inversely with the characteristic energy for spin fluctuations, Tsf = Emax/kB. While chi(T), Cmag(T), and Emax of the 4f compound YbFe2Zn20 are very well described by the Kondo impurity model, we show that the model works poorly for URu2Zn20 and UCo2Zn20, suggesting that the scaling behavior of the actinide compounds arises from spin fluctuations of itinerant 5f electrons., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

When subjected to pressure, the prototypical heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn5 becomes superconducting, forming a broad dome of superconductivity centered around 2.35 GPa (=P2) with maximal Tc of 2.3 K. Above the superconducting dome, the normal state shows strange metallic behaviours, including a divergence in the specific heat and a sub-T-linear electrical resistivity. The discovery of a field-induced magnetic phase that coexists with superconductivity for a range of pressures P < P2 has been interpreted as evidence for a quantum phase transition, which could explain the non-Fermi liquid behavior observed in the normal state. Here we report electrical resistivity measurements of CeRhIn5 under magnetic field at P2, where the resistivity is sub-T-linear for temperatures above Tc (or T_FL) and a T^2-coefficient A found below T_FL diverges as Hc2 is approached. These results are similar to the field-induced quantum critical compound CeCoIn5 and confirm the presence of a quantum critical point in the pressure-induced superconductor CeRhIn5., 7 pages, 3 figures

We report low-temperature thermal conductivity down to 40 mK of the antiferromagnet BaFe$_2$As$_{2}$, which is the parent compound of recently discovered iron-based superconductors. In the investigated temperature range below 4 K, the thermal conductivity $\kappa$ is well described by the expression $\kappa$ = $aT$ + $bT^{2.22}$. We attribute the ``$aT$''-term to an electronic contribution which is found to satisfy the Wiedemann-Franz law in the $T$ $\to$ 0 K limit, and the remaining thermal conductivity, $\sim$ $T^{2.22}$, is attributed to phonon conductivity. A small influence on thermal conductivity by magnetic fields up to 8 T is well accounted by the observed magnetoresistance. The result is consistent with a fully gapped magnon spectrum, inferred previously from inelastic neutron scattering measurements., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report quantum oscillation measurements on CaFe2As2 under strong magnetic fields- recently reported to become superconducting under pressures of as little as a kilobar. The largest observed carrier pocket occupies less than 0.05 % of the paramagnetic Brillouin zone volume- consistent with Fermi surface reconstruction caused by antiferromagnetism. On comparing several alkali earth AFe2As2 antiferromagnets (with A=Ca,Sr and Ba), the dependence of both the Fermi surface cross-sectional area F_alpha and the effective mass m*_alpha of the primary observed pocket on the antiferromagnetic/structural transition temperature T_s is found to be consistent with quasiparticles in a conventional spin-density wave model. These findings suggest that a conventional spin-density wave exists within close proximity to superconductivity in this series of compounds, which may have implications for the microscopic origin of unconventional pair formation., 4 pages with 5 figures

Heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, NMR, and resistivity of SrNi2P2 single crystals are presented, illustrating a purely structural transition at 325 K with no magnetism. Bulk superconductivity is found at 1.4 K. The magnitude of the transition temperature T_c, fits to the heat capacity data, the small upper critical field $H_{c2}$ = 390 Oe, and Ginzburg-Landau parameter $\kappa$ = 2.1 suggests a conventional fully gapped superconductor. With applied pressure a second structural phase transition occurs which results in an 8% reduction in the c/a ratio of lattice parameters. We find that superconductivity persists into this high pressure phase, although the transition temperature is monotonically suppressed with increasing pressure. We report low-temperature thermal-expansion measurements on single crystals of the {\it layered} heavy fermion system \cri ($0.3\leq x \leq 0.6$) and compare it with a previous study on the related {\it cubic} system \ci [R. K\"{u}chler {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 256403 (2006)]. Both systems display a quantum critical point as proven by a divergent Gr\"uneisen ratio. Most remarkably, the three-dimensional itinerant model explains quantum criticality in {\it both} systems, suggesting that the crystalline anisotropy in \cri is unimportant. We report 209Bi NMR and NQR measurements on a single crystal of the Kondo insulator U3Bi4Ni3. The 209Bi nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($T_1^{-1}$) shows activated behavior and is well-fit by a spin gap of 220 K. The 209Bi Knight shift (K) exhibits a strong temperature dependence arising from 5f electrons, in which K is negative at high temperatures and increases as the temperature is lowered. Below 50 K, K shows a broad maximum and decreases slightly upon further cooling. Our data provide insight into the evolution of the hyperfine fields in a fully gapped Kondo insulator based on 5f electron hybridization., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B

The CeTIn5 superconductors (T=Co, Rh, or Ir) have generated great interest due to their relatively Tc's, NFL behavior, and their proximity to AF order and quantum critical points. In contrast to small changes with the T-species, electron doping in CeT(In{1-x}Mx)5 with M=Sn and hole doping with Cd or Hg have a dramatic effect on the electronic properties at very low concentrations. The present work reports EXAFS measurements that address the substituent atom distribution as a function of T, M, and x, near the superconducting phase. Together with previous measurements for M=Sn, the proportion of the M atom residing on the In(1) site, f{In(1)}, increases in the order M=Cd, Sn, and Hg, ranging from about 40% to 70%, showing a strong preference for these substituents to occupy the In(1) site (random=20%). In addition, f{In(1)} ranges from 70% to 100% for M=Hg in the order T=Co, Rh, and Ir. These fractions track the changes in the atomic radii of the various species, and help explain the sharp dependence of Tc on substituting into the In site. However, it is difficult to reconcile the small concentrations of M with the dramatic changes in the ground state in the hole-doped materials with only an impurity scattering model. These results therefore indicate that while such substitutions have interesting local atomic structures with important electronic and magnetic consequences, other local changes in the electronic and magnetic structure are equally important in determining the bulk properties of these materials., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, to appear in PRB

Superconductivity without phonons has been proposed for strongly correlated electron materials that are tuned close to a zero-temperature magnetic instability of itinerant charge carriers. Near this boundary, quantum fluctuations of magnetic degrees of freedom assume the role of phonons in conventional superconductors, creating an attractive interaction that glues electrons into superconducting pairs. Here we show that superconductivity can arise from a very different spectrum of fluctuations associated with a local or Kondo-breakdown quantum-critical point that is revealed in isotropic scattering of charge carriers and a sub-linear temperature-dependent electrical resistivity. At this critical point, accessed by applying pressure to the strongly correlated, local-moment antiferromagnet CeRhIn5, magnetic and charge fluctuations coexist and produce electronic scattering that is maximal at the optimal pressure for superconductivity. This previously unanticipated source of pairing glue opens possibilities for understanding and discovering new unconventional forms of superconductivity., Comment: Supplementary information is also included

We have performed low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements of the Ni-based superconductor BaNi$_2$As$_2$ ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 0.7 K) in magnetic field. In zero field, thermal conductivity shows $T$-linear behavior in the normal state and exhibits a BCS-like exponential decrease below $T_\mathrm{c}$. The field dependence of the residual thermal conductivity extrapolated to zero temperature is indicative of a fully gapped superconductor. This conclusion is supported by the analysis of the specific heat data, which are well fit by the BCS temperature dependence from $T_\mathrm{c}$ down to the lowest temperature of 0.1 K., Physical Review Letters, to be published

The electrical resistivity \rho(T) and heat capacity C(T) on single crystals of SrNi2As2 and EuNi2As2 are reported. While there is no evidence for a structural transition in either compound, SrNi2As2 is found to be a bulk superconductor at T_c=0.62 K with a Sommerfeld coefficient of \gamma= 8.7 mJ/mol K^2 and a small upper critical field H_{c2} \sim 200 Oe. No superconductivity was found in EuNi2As2 above 0.4 K, but anomalies in \rho and C reveal that magnetic order associated with the Eu^{2+} magnetic moments occurs at T_m = 14 K., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We report pressure-induced superconductivity in a single crystal of CaFe2As2. At atmospheric pressure, this material is antiferromagnetic below 170 K but under an applied pressure of 0.69 GPa becomes superconducting, with a transition temperature Tc exceeding 10 K. The rate of Tc suppression with applied magnetic field is -0.7 K/T, giving an extrapolated zero-temperature upper critical field of 10-14T., Accepted to J. Phys.: Condens. We report the properties of two new isostructural compounds, U3Bi4Ni3 and U3Bi4Rh3. The first of these compounds is non-metallic, and the second is a nearly ferromagnetic metal, both as anticipated from their electron count relative to other U-based members of the larger 3-4-3 family. For U3Bi4Rh3, a logarithmic increase of C/T below 3 K, a resistivity proportional to T^4/3, and the recovery of Fermi-liquid behavior in both properties with applied fields greater than 3T, suggest that U3Bi4Rh3 may be a new example of a material displaying ferromagnetic quantum criticality., 24 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physical Review B

The antiferromagnet CaFe$_2$As$_2$ does not become superconducting when subject to ideal hydrostatic pressure conditions, where crystallographic and magnetic states also are well defined. By measuring electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility under quasi-hydrostatic pressure, however, we find that a substantial volume fraction of the sample is superconducting in a narrow pressure range where collapsed tetragonal and orthorhombic structures coexist. At higher pressures, the collapsed tetragonal structure is stabilized, with the boundary between this structure and the phase of coexisting structures strongly dependent on pressure history. We report the observation of superconductivity in La3Ni4P4O2 at 2.2 K. The layer stacking in this compound results in an asymmetric distribution of charge reservoir layers around the Ni2P2 planes. The estimated Wilson ratio, Rw ~ 5, indicates the presence of a strongly enhanced normal state susceptibility, but many of the basic superconducting characteristics are conventional. The estimated electronic contribution to the specific heat, gamma ~ 6.2 mJ mol-Ni^-1K^-2, is about 2/3 of that found in layered nickel borocarbide superconductors., Updated to reflect final version.
