Composite plates are susceptible to various damages in complex conditions and working environments, which may reduce the reliability of the structure and threaten equipment and personal safety. Thus, the implementation of a robust online Structural health monitoring (SHM) system for these composite structures becomes imperative. To enhance reliability and safety, we introduce a robust online SHM system anchored by our newly developed damage detection Bayesian neural network (DD-BNN). The main contribution of this study lies in the DD-BNN to perform precise and reliable damage detection and localization in composite plates using only one actuator-receiver pair without any signal/feature pre-processing and human intervention. The proposed DD-BNN model innovatively combines probabilistic modeling with deep learning to address uncertainty in Lamb wave-based damage detection and model performance for composite plates, featuring a specialized probabilistic layer trained through Bayesian inference to efficiently encapsulate and manage uncertainty in model weights and activation. Notably, our method significantly simplifies the SHM system design and manual operation requirements. In addition, this approach not only reduces overfitting but also enhances robustness to noise, as confirmed by experiments on perturbation analysis of Gaussian and Poisson noise. Delamination represents one of the most significant and dangerous damages in composite plates. Recently, many papers have presented the capability of structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques for the investigation of structural delamination with various shapes and thickness depths. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the utilization of convolutional neural network (CNN) methods for automating the non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques database to identify the delamination size and depth. In this paper, an automated system qualified for distinguishing between pristine and damaged structures and classifying three classes of delamination with various depths is presented. This system includes a proposed CNN model and the Lamb wave technique. In this work, a unidirectional composite plate with three samples of delamination inserted at different depths was prepared for numerical and experimental investigations. In the numerical part, the guided wave propagation and interaction with three samples of delamination were studied to observe how the delamination depth can affect the scattered and trapped waves over the delamination region. This numerical study was validated experimentally using an efficient ultrasonic guided waves technique. This technique involved piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWASs) and a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). Both numerical and experimental studies demonstrate that the delamination depth has a direct effect on the trapped waves' energy and distribution. Three different datasets were collected from the numerical and experimental studies, involving the numerical wavefield image dataset, experimental wavefield image dataset, and experimental wavenumber spectrum image dataset. These three datasets were used independently with the proposed CNN model to develop a system that can automatically classify four classes (pristine class and three different delamination classes). The results of all three datasets show the capability of the proposed CNN model for predicting the delamination depth with high accuracy. The proposed CNN model results of the three different datasets were validated using the GoogLeNet CNN. The results of both methods show an excellent agreement. The lowest-order shear horizontal (SH0) guided wave in a plate is crucial for nondestructive testing and structural health monitoring due to its nondispersive nature. However, mode conversion at the interface for the SH0 wave complicates the received information and increases the difficulty of signal analysis. In this work, an elastic metasurface is proposed to suppress mode conversion at the interface and to reflect the SH0 wave directionally. The metasurface comprises a series of rectangular elements with a specific phase gradient covering the 2 π phase range. The effectiveness of the proposed metasurface is confirmed through finite element simulations and experimental validation. The results indicate that the metasurface can significantly reduce the amplitude of the reflected lowest-order symmetric Lamb wave when compared to the reflection without the metasurface, while simultaneously allowing the reflected SH0 wave to propagate at the designed angle. Furthermore, the metasurface maintains its functionality for SH0 wave with incident angles varying from 0° to 25°. This study provides a viable approach for suppressing mode conversion and modulating the reflection behavior of SH0 wave, which is expected to find applications in nondestructive testing and structural health monitoring. This study conducted experimental and numerical investigations on piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWASs) bonded to an aluminum plate to assess the impact of bonding degradation on Lamb wave generation. Three surface-bonded PWASs were examined, including one intentionally bonded with a reduced adhesive to create a defective bond. Thermal cyclic aging was applied, monitoring through laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) and static capacitance measurements. The PWAS with the initially defective bond exhibited the poorest performance over aging cycles, emphasizing the significance of the initial bond condition. As debonding progressed, modifications in electromechanical behavior were observed, leading to a reduction in wave amplitude and distortion of the generated wave field, challenging the validity of existing analytical modeling of wave-tuning curves for perfectly bonded PWASs. Both numerical simulations and experimental observations substantiated this finding. In conclusion, this study highlights the imperative of a high-integrity bond for the proper functioning of a guided wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) system, emphasizing ongoing challenges in assessing SHM performance. To study the acoustic characteristics of sound scattered from laminated structures such as elastic plates and shells, it is usually required to solve the Lamb waves' dispersion equations. Many traditional root-finding methods such as bisection, the Newton–Raphson method, and the Muller method are not able to tackle the problem completely. A simple but powerful method named local peaks search (LPS) is proposed to overcome their drawbacks. Firstly, the non-zero part of the dispersion equation is defined as the dispersion function, and its reciprocal is used to transform the zeros (i.e., roots) into local peaks. Secondly, the chosen complex domain is discretized, and the coarse local domains where the local peaks exist are determined by the direct search method globally. Thirdly, the Muller method is applied to obtain the refined locations of local peaks. Lastly, in order to refine the results, a hierarchical scheme is designed and the iteration of the above procedures is implemented; the error is set to be 10−16 as the stop criteria. The accuracy of the LPS method is validated by comparing it with the bisection method for the problem of elastic plates in the vacuum. The acoustic echo structures are analyzed experimentally. By computation of Lamb waves' phase velocity, the critical angles are derived numerically and compared with the results acquired by an experiment using monostatic sound transducers. In this way, it is validated that the elastic scattered wave components are the highlights shown in the time-angle figure. Although Lamb waves have found extensive use in structural damage detection, their practical applications remain limited. This limitation primarily arises from the intricate nature of Lamb wave propagation modes and the effect of temperature variations. Therefore, rather than directly inspecting and interpreting Lamb wave responses for insights into the structural health, this study proposes a novel approach, based on a two-step cointegration-based computation procedure, for structural damage evaluation using Lamb wave data represented as time series that exhibit some common trends. The first step involves the composition of Lamb wave series sharing a common upward (or downward) trend of temperature. In the second step, the cointegration analysis is applied for each group of Lamb wave series, which represents a certain condition of damage. So, a cointegration analysis model of Lamb wave series is created for each damage condition. The geometrical and statistical features of Lamb wave series and cointegration residual series are used for detecting and distinguishing damage conditions. These features include the shape, peak-to-peak amplitude, and variance of the series. The validity of this method is confirmed through its application to the Lamb wave data collected from both undamaged and damaged aluminium plates subjected to temperature fluctuations. The proposed approach can find its application not only in Lamb wave-based damage detection, but also in other structural health monitoring (SHM) systems where the data can be arranged in the form of sharing common environmental and/or operational trends. Human health monitoring (HHM) is essential for continued daily task execution, as is structural health monitoring (SHM) for structures to ensure the continual performance of their designed tasks with optimal efficiency. The existence of damage in a structure affects its optimal use through stiffness deterioration. Damage of different forms could occur in a structure but have the singular objective of material degradation, leading to its underuse for a task. Guided wave ultrasonics has shown strength in detecting sundry damage in structures, but most of the damage monitored and detected is unfilled with substances. However, some damage could trap and accumulate substances that could hasten material degradation through corrosion activities under favorable conditions, especially in the oil and gas industry. This study used the ultrasonic-guided waves' pitch–catch inspection technique to identify damage filled with different materials. The assessment was based on the RMSD of the dominant Lamb wave mode's average maximum amplitude and the response signals' transmission coefficient (TC). A five-cycle tone burst of excitation signals of different frequencies was created to generate propagating Lamb waves in the structure. The fundamental antisymmetric mode was found to be more sensitive than the fundamental symmetric mode when detecting damage filled with various substances. At 80 kHz, the deviation of the current response signals from the baseline response signals due to different filled substances in the damage was distinct and decreased with increased fluid viscosity. The aim of this work is to propose a numerical methodology based on the finite element (FE) method to study the propagation mechanisms of transmitted, converted, and reflected guided waves in stiffened fiber‐reinforced polymeric (FRP) composite structures. The dispersion curves of such modes can help designers to improve the damage detection sensitivity of Lamb waves based structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. Using a FE model, whose accuracy is demonstrated against semi‐analytical data in a previous work, the phenomena of scattering and mode conversion in composite panels characterized by a structural discontinuity, such as a stiffener, are investigated. In particular, the behavior of guided waves is analyzed using stiffeners of different shapes, C and Omega shaped. The research activity makes it possible to highlight conversion of modes and reflected waves at stiffeners, providing new observations compared to the state of the art. The morphological complexities of the structure (thickness steps, multiple boundaries, stiffeners) can be used to redirect guided waves and to allow monitoring of a specific area. Lamb wave is a promising tool for structural health monitoring and nondestructive testing. During propagation, dispersion and multi-mode characteristics generally result in overlapping of wave packets. Sparse decomposition is developed to address the overlap problem. Traditional dictionary design in sparse decomposition is to search optimal matching between dictionary atoms and propagating wave packets. However, design accuracy is limited in broadband Lamb wave because propagating wave packet is difficult to predict with severe amplitude modulation and velocity dispersion. To overcome this limitation, broadband Lamb wave sparse decomposition is proposed. Firstly, tone burst models are used as dictionary atoms to match waveform segment rather than global wave packet. Subsequently, solved sparse vector by basis pursuit algorithm is reshaped into a time-frequency matrix. The ultrasonic guided lamb wave approach is an effective non-destructive testing (NDT) method used for detecting localized mechanical damage, corrosion, and welding defects in metallic pipelines. The signal processing of guided waves is often challenging due to the complexity of the operational conditions and environment in the pipelines. Machine learning approaches in recent years, including convolutional neural networks (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), have exhibited their advantages to overcome these challenges for the signal processing and data classification of complex systems, thus showing great potential for damage detection in critical oil/gas pipeline structures. In this study, a CNN-LSTM hybrid model was utilized for decoding ultrasonic guided waves for damage detection in metallic pipelines, and twenty-nine features were extracted as input to classify different types of defects in metallic pipes. The prediction capacity of the CNN-LSTM model was assessed by comparing it to those of CNN and LSTM. The results demonstrated that the CNN-LSTM hybrid model exhibited much higher accuracy, reaching 94.8%, as compared to CNN and LSTM. Interestingly, the results also revealed that predetermined features, including the time, frequency, and time–frequency domains, could significantly improve the robustness of deep learning approaches, even though deep learning approaches are often believed to include automated feature extraction, without hand-crafted steps as in shallow learning. Furthermore, the CNN-LSTM model displayed higher performance when the noise level was relatively low (e.g., SNR = 9 or higher), as compared to the other two models, but its prediction dropped gradually with the increase of the noise. Most cracks do not grow straight due to the inhomogeneity of material properties. Furthermore, quantifying structural damage using Lamb waves is difficult due to uncertain crack shape. Here, we present a newly developed finite element model to simulate the propagation of Lamb waves in a cracked plate to quantify the influence of crack size and orientation on the characteristics of Lamb wave propagation. This model includes a piezoelectric actuator and sensor to generate and receive the tone-burst signals of Lamb wave. The damping coefficient of the finite element model was calibrated with the experimental data of plates without a crack. The Lamb wave propagation simulations were performed with various crack sizes, crack orientations, and distances between the actuator and sensor. Our model was utilized to investigate the influence of crack orientation on damage quantification based on the signal phase change and normalized amplitude. We successfully evaluated the effect of the incident angle of the crack, crack size, and distance between the sensors on the change of the plate wave signal characteristics. The signal characteristics obtained from our novel finite element model can be used to develop a quantification model to estimate the crack size, direction, and distance from the sensor. Crack imaging is attractive in the community of nondestructive testing and structural health monitoring of plate-like structures. However, most existing research focuses on the imaging of single crack, while limited work has been reported for the imaging of multiple cracks. To this end, the application of the Lamb wave-based technique is presented in this paper to image the multiple cracks. The antisymmetric mode (A0) of Lamb wave propagation in the thin plate is simulated using the numerical finite element method, and a circular piezoelectric sensor array is considered to capture the Lamb wave signals. The damage index taking into account the attenuation of the reflected signal amplitude is proposed using the reflection signals from the cracks, and the Hilbert transform is used to extract the information of damage. The damage scanning map is constructed to show the damage location in the plate. The proposed damage identification algorithm based on Lamb wave propagation is also used to detect two cracks in the thin plates. The consideration of wave attenuation improves the identification of multiple cracks. In the field of structural health monitoring, Lamb Wave has become one of the most widely used inspection tools due to its advantages of wide detection range and high sensitivity. In this paper, a new damage detection method for honeycomb sandwich structures based on frequency spectrum and Lamb Wave Tomography is proposed. By means of simulation and experiment, a certain number of sensors were placed on the honeycomb sandwich plate to stimulate and receive the signals in both undamaged and damaged cases. By Lamb Wave Tomography, the differences of signals before and after damage were compared, and the damage indexes were calculated. Furthermore, the probability of each sensor path containing damage was analyzed, and the damage image was finally realized. The technology does not require analysis of the complex multimode propagation properties of Lamb Wave, nor does it require understanding and modeling of the properties of materials or structures. In both simulation and experiment, the localization errors of the damage conform to the detection requirements, thus verifying that the method has certain feasibility in damage detection. Guided wave-based nondestructive testing and structural health monitoring methods have been developed to exhibit attractive potentials and best prospects for rapid and sensitive detection of defects or damage in engineering structures. Different modes of guided waves can provide different sensitivities of damage detection. However, the multimode and mode conversion nature of guided waves poses significant challenges to mode purification of received signals. This study aims to design a metamaterial-based smart transducer for mode purification of Lamb waves in a plate, which can filter out an undesired mode of the Lamb wave to enhance sensing and actuating signals of a dominated mode. The smart transducer consists of a periodic array of shunted piezoelectric unimorphs with staggered polarization directions and is bonded on the surface of a host plate. Numerical and experimental results show that a local resonance bandgap for an anti-symmetric Lamb wave, rather than a symmetric Lamb wave, can be obtained and tuned through the shunting inductance circuit. Within such mode bandgap, the wave control for propagating a specific mode of the Lamb wave can be further realized, i.e., the mode of the Lamb wave is purified. Large-scale plate-like structural components have been widely used in engineering fields. The occurrence and accumulation of structural damage will threaten the integrity of plate-like structures. Guided wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technology has been demonstrated as an effective tool to detect small-scale damage at a high sensitivity. Due to the advantages of baseline-free, concentrated sensor arrays and rapid inspection of the full area, Lamb wave-phased array SHM systems have been extensively investigated in recent years. However, the inherent multi-mode characteristic of Lamb waves is well-known to have a significant influence on wave propagation and further development of phased array method. In this study, a single Lamb wave mode extraction method combined with phased array SHM system is proposed based on a concentric piezoelectric active transducer (CPAT). First, a brief review of a Lamb wave-phased array system is presented, including working principle, sensor array, and Lamb wave excitation and sensing. Then, the single mode wave extraction method is performed based on the CPAT. The effectiveness of the single mode wave extraction-based phased array SHM system is first examined numerically. Finally, the proposed phased array system is used to monitor large plate-like structures and the availability and validity of the proposed SHM system is confirmed by an experimental study. Damage detection and localization based on ultrasonic guided waves revealed to be promising for structural health monitoring and nondestructive testing. However, the use of a piezoelectric sensor's network to locate and image damaged areas in composite structures requires a number of precautions including the consideration of anisotropy and baseline signals. The lack of information related to these two parameters drastically deteriorates the imaging performance of numerous signal processing methods. To avoid such deterioration, the present contribution proposes different methods to build baseline signals in different types of composites. Baseline signals are first constructed from a numerical simulation model using the previously determined elasticity tensor of the structure. Since the latter tensor is not always easy to obtain especially in the case of anisotropic materials, a second PZT network is used in order to obtain signals related to Lamb waves propagating in different directions. Waveforms are then translated according to a simplified theoretical propagation model of Lamb waves in homogeneous structures. The application of the different methods on transversely isotropic, unidirectional and quasi-transversely isotropic composites allows to have satisfactory images that well represent the damaged areas with the help of the delay-and-sum algorithm. Guided acoustic waves (GAW) have proven to be a useful tool for structural health monitoring (SHM). However, the dispersive nature of commonly used Lamb waves compromises the spatial resolution making it difficult to detect small or weakly reflective defects. Here we demonstrate an approach that can compensate for the dispersive effects, allowing advanced algorithms to be used with significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution. In this paper, the sign coherence factor (SCF) extension of the total focusing method (TFM) algorithm is used. The effectiveness is examined by numerical simulation and experimentally demonstrated by detecting weakly reflective layers with a highly dispersive A0 mode on an aluminum plate, which are not detectable without compensating for the dispersion effects. A flexoelectric actuator represents a new approach for exciting Lamb waves in plate structures and, thus, can be potentially used for active structural health monitoring systems and microsensors. This paper analytically investigated the performance of a flexoelectric actuator for Lamb wave excitation. The constitutive equation for a thin plate flexoelectric structure was derived using the thermodynamics theory. A significant size effect could be demonstrated by the constitutive equation, which suggests a greatly enhanced curvature excitation performance at a small dimension. The interaction between the ideally bonded flexoelectric actuator with the plate could be simplified into two pairs of pin force and pin moment under the assumption of a weak coupling condition. The strain and the displacement responses to the pin-force and pin-moment pairs were obtained using the integral transform techniques and residue calculus. The pin-moment component mainly yielded an antisymmetric Lamb wave mode, while the pin force was reminiscent of its piezoelectric counterpart. The tuning of either a symmetric or an antisymmetric mode could be achieved by choosing an appropriate excitation frequency. In the context of an embedded structural health monitoring (SHM) system, two methods of transducer integration into the core of a laminate carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) are tested: cut-out and between two plies. This study focuses on the effect of integration methods on Lamb wave generation. For this purpose, plates with an embedded lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducer are cured in an autoclave. The embedded PZT insulation, integrity, and ability to generate Lamb waves are checked with electromechanical impedance, X-rays, and laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) measurements. Lamb wave dispersion curves are computed by LDV using two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (Bi-FFT) to study the quasi-antisymmetric mode (qA0) excitability in generation with the embedded PZT in the frequency range of 30 to 200 kHz. The embedded PZT is able to generate Lamb waves, which validate the integration procedure. The first minimum frequency of the embedded PZT shifts to lower frequencies and its amplitude is reduced compared to a surface-mounted PZT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thin-walled structures, like aircraft skins and ship shells, are often several meters in size but only a few millimeters thick. By utilizing the laser ultrasonic Lamb wave detection method (LU-LDM), signals can be detected over long distances without physical contact. Additionally, this technology offers excellent flexibility in designing the measurement point distribution. The characteristics of LU-LDM are first analyzed in this review, specifically in terms of laser ultrasound and hardware configuration. Next, the methods are categorized based on three criteria: the quantity of collected wavefield data, the spectral domain, and the distribution of measurement points. The advantages and disadvantages of multiple methods are compared, and the suitable conditions for each method are summarized. Thirdly, we summarize four combined methods that balance detection efficiency and accuracy. Finally, several future development trends are suggested, and the current gaps and shortcomings in LU-LDM are highlighted. This review builds a comprehensive framework for LU-LDM for the first time, which is expected to serve as a technical reference for applying this technology in large, thin-walled structures. Structural health monitoring of riveted aircraft panels is a real challenge for maintenance engineers. Here, a diffused Lamb wave field is used for fatigue-crack detection in a multi-riveted strap-joint aircraft panel. The panel is instrumented with a network of low-profile surface-bonded piezoceramic transducers. Various amplitude characteristics of Lamb waves are used to extract information on fatigue damage. A statistical outlier analysis based on these characteristics is also performed to detect damage. The experimental work is supported by simplified modelling of wave scattering from crack tips to explain complex response features. The Local Interaction Simulation Approach (LISA) is used for this modelling task. Most imaging methods based on ultrasonic Lamb waves in structural health monitoring requires reference signals, recorded in the intact state. This paper focuses on a novel baseline-free method for damage localization using Lamb waves based on a hyperbolic algorithm. This method employs a special array with a relatively small number of transducers and only one branch of the hyperbola. The novel symmetrical array was arranged on plate structures to eliminate the direct waves. The time difference between the received signals at symmetrical sensors was obtained from the damage-scattered waves. The sequence of time difference for constructing the hyperbolic trajectory was calculated by the cross-correlation method. Numerical simulation and experimental measurements were implemented on an aluminum plate with a through-thickness hole in the current state. The imaging results show that both the damages outside and inside the diamond-shaped arrays can be localized, and the positioning error reaches the maximum for the diamond-shaped array with the minimum size. Acoustic emission (AE) testing and Lamb wave inspection techniques have been widely used in non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring. For thin plates, the AEs arising from structural defect development (e.g., fatigue crack propagation) propagate as Lamb waves, and Lamb wave modes can be used to provide important information about the growth and localisation of defects. However, few sensors can be used to achieve the in situ wavenumber–frequency modal decomposition of AEs. This study explores the ability of a new multi-element piezoelectric sensor array to decompose AEs excited by pencil lead breaks (PLBs) on a thin isotropic plate. In this study, AEs were generated by out-of-plane (transverse) and in-plane (longitudinal) PLBs applied at the edge of the plate, and waveforms were recorded by both the new sensor array and a commercial AE sensor. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulations of PLBs were also conducted and the results were compared with the experimental results. To identify the wave modes present, the longitudinal and transverse PLB test results recorded by the new sensor array at five different plate locations were compared with FEA simulations using the same arrangement. Two-dimensional fast Fourier Transforms were then applied to the AE wavefields. It was found that the AE modal composition was dependent on the orientation of the PLB direction. The results suggest that this new sensor array can be used to identify the AE wave modes excited by PLBs in both in-plane and out-of-plane directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In view of the shortage of structural defect monitoring methods for deep submersibles, numerical simulation and experimental research on underwater SAW propagation based on interdigital transducers are carried out in this paper. PVDF interdigital transducer (PVDF-IDT) has shown considerable potential in the application of structural health monitoring because of its micro size, soft material characteristics, and the characteristics of long-term bonding on the surface of the tested structure. In order to realize the application of IDT on submersible or underwater structures, it is necessary to understand the influence of underwater environment on IDTs with different structures. The underwater attenuation of IDT with 2–5 mm wavelength and the underwater attenuation of Lamb (A0 mode) wave on a 4 mm thick titanium alloy plate is obtained through COMSOL software simulation. The experimental verification shows that the simulation results match with the actual situation, which proves that COMSOL software can accurately calculate the acoustic attenuation of surface waves at the solid–liquid interface. At the same time, the underwater attenuation of IDT with different structures is very different, providing important design parameters for the underwater interdigital transducer. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a damage detection technique based on the automatic classification of the Lamb wave signals acquired on a metallic plate. In the reported experiments, Lamb waves are excited in an aluminum plate through a piezoelectric transducer glued onto the monitored structure. The response of the monitored structure is detected through a high-resolution phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (ϕ-OTDR). The presence and location of a small perturbation, induced by placing a lumped mass of 5 g on the plate, are determined by processing the optical fiber sensor data through support vector machine (SVM) classifiers trained with experimental data. The results show that the proposed method takes full advantage of the multipoint sensing nature of the ϕ-OTDR technology, resulting in accurate damage detection and localization. Ultrasonic guided waves offer a convenient and practical approach to structural health monitoring and non-destructive evaluation. A key property of guided waves is the fully defined relationship between central frequency and propagation characteristics (phase velocity, group velocity and wavenumber)—which is described using dispersion curves. For many guided wave-based strategies, accurate dispersion curve information is invaluable, such as group velocity for localisation. From experimental observations of dispersion curves, a system identification procedure can be used to determine the governing material properties. As well as returning an estimated value, it is useful to determine the distribution of these properties based on measured data. A method of simulating samples from these distributions is to use the iterative Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedure, which allows for freedom in the shape of the posterior. In this work, a scanning-laser Doppler vibrometer is used to record the propagation of Lamb waves in a unidirectional-glass-fibre composite plate, and dispersion curve data for various propagation angles are extracted. Using these measured dispersion curve data, the MCMC sampling procedure is performed to provide a Bayesian approach to determining the dispersion curve information for an arbitrary plate. The distribution of the material properties at each angle is discussed, including the inferred confidence in the predicted parameters. The percentage errors of the estimated values for the parameters were 10–15 points larger when using the most likely estimates, as opposed to calculating from the posterior distributions, highlighting the advantages of using a probabilistic approach. In this paper, the Lamb wave based structural health monitoring for aluminum bolted joints with multiple-site fatigue damages was investigated experimentally. In the experiments, the Lamb waves were generated and received by piezoelectric transducers. Three specimens were prepared for fatigue testing and monitored by the Lamb wave signals. Due to the complex geometry of the specimen, multiple fatigue cracks were observed at different bolt holes during the fatigue testing. The signals before and after the initiation of the fatigue cracks were compared to calculate the damage index (DI). In general cases, DI can serve an indicator to map the fatigue crack size. In the experiments, it was found that the phase shifts between the baseline signal before fatigue crack initiates, Sb(t) , and the signal with fatigue cracks, S(t) , can result in an overestimated DI. To solve this problem, the envelope damage index (EDI) was introduced to monitor the fatigue cracks. The envelope curves of Sb and S are considered in the calculation of EDI. In the experiments, three specimens were prepared for fatigue testing. This paper demonstrates that a graded-index (GRIN) phononic lens, combined with a channel waveguide, can focus anti-symmetric Lamb waves for extraction by a detector with strong directional sensitivity. Guided ultrasonic wave inspection is commonly applied for structural health monitoring applications; however, obtaining sufficient signal amplitude is a challenge. In addition, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have strong directional sensitivity. We fabricate the GRIN structure, followed by a channel waveguide starting at the focal point, using a commercial 3D printer and mount it on a thin aluminum plate. We characterize the focusing of the A0 mode Lamb wave in the plate, traveling across the GRIN lens using 3D laser Doppler vibrometry. We also measure the extraction of focused energy using an FBG sensor, examining the optimal sensor bond location and bond length in the channel of the waveguide for maximum signal extraction. The measured amplification of the ultrasound signal is compared to theoretical predictions. The results demonstrate that significant amplification of the waveform is achieved and that selecting the location of the FBG sensor in the channel is critical to optimizing the amplification. Nonlinear group delay signals with frequency-varying characteristics are common in a wide variety of fields, for instance, structural health monitoring and fault diagnosis. For such applications, the signal is composed of multiple modes, where each mode may overlap in the frequency-domain. The resulting decomposition and forming of time-frequency representations of the nonlinear group delay modes is a challenging task. In this study, the nonlinear group delay signal is modelled in the frequency-domain. Exploiting the sparsity of the signal, we present the nonlinear group delay mode estimation technique, which forms the demodulation dictionary from the group delay. This method can deal with crossed modes and transient impulse signals. Furthermore, an augmented alternating direction multiplier method is introduced to form an efficient implementation. Numerical simulations and experimental data analysis show the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method. Lamb Wave (LW)-based structural health monitoring method is promising, but its main obstacle is damage assessment in varying environments. LW simulation based on piezoelectric transducers (referred to as PZTs) is an efficient and low-cost method. This paper proposes a multiphysics simulation method of LW propagation with the PZTs under temperature effect. The effect of temperature on LW propagation is considered from two aspects. On the one hand, temperature affects the material parameters of the structure, the adhesive layers and the PZTs. On the other hand, it is considered that the thermal stress caused by the inconsistency of thermal expansion coefficients among the structure, the adhesive layers, and the PZTs affect the piezoelectric constant of the PZTs. Based on the COMSOL Multiphysics, the mechanic–electric–thermal directly coupling simulation model under temperature effect is established. The simulation model consists of two steps. In the first step, the thermal-mechanic coupling is carried out to calculate the thermal stress, and the thermal stress effect is introduced into the piezoelectric constant model. In the second step, mechanic–electric coupling is carried out to simulate LW propagation, which considers the piezoelectric effect of the PZTs for the LW excitation and reception. The simulation results at −20 °C to 60 °C are obtained and compared to the experiment. The results show that the A0 and S0 mode of simulation signals match well with the experimental measurements. Additionally, the effect of temperature on LW propagation is consistent between simulation and experiment; that is, the amplitude increases, and the phase velocity decreases with the increment of temperature. The present paper comprehensively investigates the complex interaction between ultrasonic guided waves and local structural discontinuities, such as damages, through highly sensitive features: so-called wave damage interaction coefficients (WDICs). These WDICs are unique for each structural discontinuity and depend solely on their characteristics for a given structure and condition. Thus, they can be particularly useful for advanced assessment of lightweight structures in the context of non-destructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. However, the practical application of WDICs entails significant difficulties due to their sensitivity and complex patterns. Therefore, this study attempts to guide researchers and practitioners in the estimation of WDICs from numerical simulations and physical experiments. Detailed investigations are made for an aluminum host plate modified by artificial structural discontinuities, i.e., surface-bonded steel sheets. The numerical simulations are performed to predict WDICs and study sensitivities using a sophisticated finite element model. The experimental setup uses piezoelectric transducers to excite guided waves in the host plate. A single scanning laser Doppler vibrometer measures the scattered guided waves caused by the surface-bonded steel sheets, and the resulting WDICs with possible influences are investigated. In both cases, the orientation and thickness of the attached steel sheets were varied to create 12 different damage scenarios. In general, the comparison between numerical and experimental WDICs show good agreement. This underpins the applicability of the general methodology for simulating and measuring WDICs over all scenarios. Furthermore, the WDIC scattering patterns reveal a clear dependency of the peaks in the back-scattered reflections for both the numerical and experimental amplitude coefficients on the damage orientation, basically following the law of reflection. However, some discrepancies between both studies were observed. Numerical sensitivity analysis identified the adhesive layer as one reason for such differences. Additionally, misalignment errors in the experimental measurements were also found to affect WDICs. Therefore, an improved baseline subtraction method is proposed, which clearly enhances the experimental WDICs. Finally, an experimental sensitivity study of WDICs for selected sensing radii revealed only a minor influence. All these investigations were made for the amplitude as well as the phase representation of WDICs. Thus, these findings may open the way to future research and development of techniques employing WDICs for advanced applications of non-destructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. In this paper, the use of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (ϕ-OTDR) sensor for the detection of the Lamb waves excited by a piezoelectric transducer in an aluminum plate, is investigated. The system is shown to detect and resolve the Lamb wave in distinct regions of the plate, opening the possibility of realizing structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage detection using a single optical fiber attached to the structure. The system also reveals the variations in the Lamb wave resulting from a change in the load conditions of the plate. The same optical fiber used to detect the Lamb waves has also been employed to realize distributed strain measurements using a Brillouin scattering system. The method can be potentially used to replace conventional SHM sensors such as strain gauges and PZT transducers, with the advantage of offering several sensing points using a single fiber. We propose an efficient semi-analytical method capable of modeling the propagation of flexural waves on cracked plate structures with any forms of excitations, based on the same group of vibration characteristics and validated by a non-contact scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) system. The proposed modeling method is based on the superposition of the vibrational normal modes of the detected structure, which can be applied to analyze long-time and full-field transient wave propagations. By connecting the vibration-based transient model to a power flow analysis technique, we further analyze the transient waves on a cracked plate subjected to different excitation sources and show the influence of the damage event on the path of the propagating waves. While the active ultrasonic method is an attractive structural health monitoring (SHM) technology, many practical issues such as weight of transducers and cables, energy consumption, reliability and cost of implementation are restraining its application. To overcome these challenges, an active ultrasonic SHM technology enabled by a direct-write transducer (DWT) array and edge computing process is proposed in this work. The operation feasibility of the monitoring function is demonstrated with Lamb wave excited and detected by a linear DWT array fabricated in situ from piezoelectric P(VDF-TrFE) polymer coating on an aluminum alloy plate with a simulated defect. The DWT array features lightweight, small profile, high conformability, and implementation scalability, whilst the edge-computing circuit dedicatedly designed for the active ultrasonic SHM is able to perform signal processing at the sensor nodes before wirelessly transmitting the data to a remote host device. The successful implementation of edge-computing processes is able to greatly decrease the amount of data to be transferred by 331 times and decrease the total energy consumption for the wireless module by 224 times. The results and analyses show that the combination of the piezoelectric DWT and edge-computing process provides a promising technical solution for realizing practical wireless active ultrasonic SHM system. • Proposed a deep learning-assisted delamination evaluation technique by using guided wave time–space images. • Showed that the developed neural network is capable of accurately predicting delamination locations and sizes. • Demonstrated that the proposed methodology is a baseline-free technique that evaluates the delamination without referring to the pristine condition. This article proposes a deep learning-assisted nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique for locating and sizing a coating delamination using ultrasonic guided waves. The proposed technique consists of sending a propagating guided wave into a coated plate with a transducer and measuring the corresponding time-domain signals by receivers at several locations at downstream distances from the source transducer. The received time-domain signals are then provided to a trained machine-learning (ML) algorithm, which subsequently outputs the location and size of any delamination flaws between the transducer and receivers. Numerical simulations show that the proposed NDE technique yields accurate results with high throughput, once the ML algorithm is well trained. Although training the ML algorithm is time-consuming, this training only needs to be done once for a given sample configuration. The results of this article demonstrate that the proposed technique has great potential for characterizing delamination flaws in practical NDE and structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. Aluminum structures are routinely used in aircraft due to their lightweight and corrosion resistance properties. Multi-layered aluminum plates are generally joined by rivets forming regions which are prone to fatigue crack formation in an aircraft. Therefore, the detection and monitoring of fatigue cracks at rivet joints in aluminum structures are crucial for ensuring flight safety. In this study, piezoelectric sensors were utilized to generate and detect Lamb waves on aluminum plates with rivet joints to investigate the feasibility of a newly developed Sideband Peak Count (SPC) technique for detecting fatigue cracks around these joints. To overcome the limitations of existing SPC-I (Sideband Peak Count – Index) and SPI (Sideband Peak Intensity) techniques in capturing harmonic and modulating wave frequencies due to material nonlinearity, a comprehensive index, the Sideband Intensity Index (SII) is introduced. Comparative analysis with existing SPC-I and SPI techniques confirm the effectiveness of the SII technique. This investigation shows that the SII technique significantly improves the detection capability of initial fatigue cracks around rivet joints on aluminum plates. The encoder-decoder framework in the proposed CSCUNet enables the transformation of low-resolution input image to high-resolution damage image. In addition, the multi-layer convolutional sparse coding block is introduced into encoder of the CSCUNet to improve both performance and interpretability of the model. The proposed method is tested on both numerical and experimental data acquired on the surface of composite specimen. The results demonstrate its effectiveness in identifying the delamination location, size, and shape. Although guided waves offer great potential for monitoring various structures, interpreting signals from piezoelectric sensors remains a challenging task. One main reason is the significant influence of environmental conditions on the wave propagation. A lot of research has already been done on the influence of temperature effects and recently more attention has been shifted towards loads. While previous publications have mainly focused on uni- or bi-directional loads, this publication expands the developed models to include bending loads. After reviewing the analytical basis of acoustoelasticity, the derived equations are expanded to nonhomogeneous elastic bending loads using the partial wave method. The analysis is completed using recent results developed by C. Hakoda and C. J. Lissenden (2018) [1] , that gave more physical insight in the propagation of guided waves in various frequency-bands. The focus of the experimental analysis is around the fundamental S0- and A0-Modes of Lamb waves. To validate the analytical results an aluminum plate is instrumented using piezoelectric transducers and loaded with varying bending loads. The experimental results are in good agreement with the analytical theory and demonstrate the influence of bending prestress on guided wave propagation. Guided Lamb waves are highly valued in structural health monitoring for identifying critical damage. The essence of Lamb wave-based damage detection is finding and processing damage-sensitive features (DSFs) that can reliably reflect and interpret structural damage. The primary emphasis of this work is the first time a comprehensive evaluation and comparison of the fifteen most commonly used DSFs in the time, frequency and time–frequency domain for Lamb waves, along with their statistical and wave interactive features based on the proposed five feature evaluation criteria. Five feature evaluation criteria are proposed concerning diagnostic capability, stability against environmental variability, computational complexity, sensor framework and structural complexity. These criteria aim to facilitate the evaluation of the robustness and reliability of each feature category. These evaluations highlight the strengths and limitations of each feature and qualitatively quantify its performance at four levels. Additionally, the paper provides explicit guidance on selecting appropriate Lamb waves' features, including when to use specific features for damage description and determination. The Lamb wave-based data pre-processing and damage characterization approaches, as well as the influence of environmental and operational factors on damage features, are also discussed in this work. Lamb wave-based structural health monitoring requires fast and accurate simulation tools for guided wave propagation in structures. In this article, a computationally efficient multiphysics time-domain spectral element (TDSE) model is presented for actuation, propagation, and sensing of Lamb waves in laminated composite strips (beams and panels) integrated with surface-bonded or embedded patch piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The transducers are physically modelled using an electromechanically coupled formulation, which combines an efficient layerwise zigzag theory for kinematics with a layerwise distribution for the electric potential field. The high-order TDSE has n physical nodes containing mechanical and electric degrees of freedom (DOFs) and a separate virtual electric node for modelling the transducers' equipotential surfaces with significantly reduced DOFs. The continuity of the displacement fields at the intersections (patch fronts) of the hybrid laminate integrated with patch transducers with the host laminate is maintained using the advanced hybrid point-least squares continuity model. The present guided wave predictions show excellent agreement with experimental measurements as well as continuum-based finite element solutions for isotropic and composite strips with surface-bonded piezo patches. The patch front continuity is shown to have a significant effect on the accuracy. The model is used to study the interaction of guided waves with the notch-type damage. The results establish the superiority of the proposed TDSE model over its standard two-node counterpart in terms of accuracy and efficiency. • Contact surface boundary conditions between the two surfaces of the vertical crack were considered to study contact acoustic nonlinearity (CAN) from the breathing contact crack in conjunction with the modal decomposition method, Fourier transform, and variational principle-based algorithm. • The clapping effects when the crack closed due to the different ratios of incident wave amplitude to crack width with the contact boundary conditions between the crack surfaces were studied and analyzed to get the quantitative correlation between analytical calculations and FE simulation. • When the crack state was modulated at a low frequency (much lower than the one of the probing ultrasonic waves), the related mode conversion coefficients were modulated accordingly both in the fundamental frequency and harmonic frequency. Reflection and transmission coefficients in the fundamental frequency and second harmonic frequency were calculated and analyzed quantitatively. Different ratios of incident wave amplitude to crack width were studied to calculate CAN results related to micro-crack width. In addition, a low-frequency (LF) vibration(10 Hz) excitation was introduced to perturb the free surface vertical crack to close, and an interrogating Lamb wave(1 MHz) was used to study crack-related CAN in different conditions for interpreting the modulation mechanism. The contact boundary conditions between two surfaces of vertical crack were set which were dynamically changed due to the low frequency modulation. The clapping effects when the crack closed due to the modulation of the contact boundary conditions between the crack surfaces were studied and analyzed to get the quantitative correlation between CAN and LF modulation. The results obtained from the analytical model were compared with those from the FE simulation, showing good consistency. Knowledge of these effects is essential to correctly gauge the severity of surface cracks in the plate, which can be spotlighted in its application to quantitative evaluation of micro fatigue cracks in structural health monitoring(SHM). This paper deals with guided wave-based structural health monitoring of composite overwrapped pressure vessels adopted for space application. Indeed, they are well suited for this scope thanks to their improved performance compared with metallic tanks. However, they are characterized by a complex damage mechanics and suffer from impact induced damage, e.g., due to space debris. After reviewing the limited progress in this specific application, the paper thoroughly covers all the steps needed to design and verify guided wave structural health monitoring system, including methodology, digital modelling, reliability, and noise estimation for a correct decision-making process in a virtual environment. In particular, propagation characteristics of the fundamental anti-symmetric mode are derived experimentally on a real specimen to validate a variety of finite element models useful to investigate wave interaction with damage. Different signal processing techniques are demonstrated sensitive to defect and linearly dependent upon damage severity, showing promising reliability. Those features can be implemented in a probability-based diagnostic imaging in order to detect and localized impact induce damage. A multi-parameter approach is achieved by metrics fusion demonstrating increased capability in damage detection with promising implication in enhancing probability of detection. This work presents a method to determine the type of Lamb mode (antisymmetric or symmetric) that propagates through a lithium-ion pouch cell. To determine the type of mode and the group velocity at a specific frequency, two- and three-transducer setups were created. For these setups, it is important that all transducers have the same polarization direction. Two transducers are affixed to the center of the cell at a distance of several centimeters from each other so that the group velocity can be determined. Using cross-correlation, the group velocity of the emerging mode can be calculated. The measurement setup and the processing method was first validated with experiments on acrylic glass and aluminum plates. The measurements were supported with FEM simulations and a numerically calculated model. The output voltages of the receiving piezo-elements obtained in the FEM simulation are in agreement with the underlying theories. The phase shift, which results from the output voltage of the piezo-elements mounted one above the other on different sides of the plate, shows the type of mode. The results of the experimental determination of the Lamb mode that propagates through a lithium-ion pouch cell were validated with a numerically calculated multi-layer model and therefore validate this novel experimental approach. The Lamb-wave-based damage imaging via beamforming techniques, which can visualize the location of damage in the structure intuitively, is one of the most promising methods in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). However, transducer array position errors are inevitable in practical application, which may lead to serious degradation in imaging performance. In this study, it is shown that the uncertainty of the steering vectors led by the imprecise position of transducers in an array can be suppressed by the doubly constrained robust Capon beamformer (DCRCB). After the unwanted side lobes are restrained by the DCRCB-based coherence factor (CF) weighting, an effective adaptive beamforming damage imaging method robust to transducer position errors is proposed. The numerical simulation and imaging experiment of damage on an aluminum plate are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The results show that the proposed Lamb wave damage imaging method performs better than the reported beamforming ones in literature in terms of resolution, contrast, and robustness to transducer position errors. Optical fibers were previously demonstrated to propagate and detect acoustic modes that were converted from Lamb waves for structural health-monitoring applications; typically, a fiber Bragg grating sensor in the optical fiber is used to detect acoustic modes. Acoustic modes can transfer from one fiber to another through a simple adhesive bond coupler, preserving the waveform of the acoustic mode. This paper experimentally investigates the coherence of acoustic waves through the adhesive coupler, using a fiber ring resonator (FRR) configuration. This configuration was chosen because the wave coupled to the second fiber interferes with the original wave after it encircles the fiber ring. We performed this experiment using different geometries of optical fibers in the ring, including a standard single-mode optical fiber, a hollow silica capillary tube, and a large-diameter multi-mode fiber. The results demonstrate that the acoustic wave, when transferring through an adhesive coupler, interferes coherently even when the main and ring fibers are of different types. Finally, we demonstrate that the FRR can be applied for sensing applications by measuring the mode attenuations in the ring due to a changing external environment (water-level sensing) and measuring the optical-path length change in the ring (temperature sensing). Digital beamforming methods in plate-like structures are widely exploited for Lamb waves-based damage imaging. Among them, the delay and sum (DAS) imaging technique is the most popular thanks to its low-computational cost and ease of implementation. However, the imaging outputs are low quality due to the high levels of side lobes and limited off-axis signal rejection, which leads to limited image resolution and contrast. Recently, the delay multiply and sum (DMAS) beamforming has been applied to nondestructive testing (NDT) field as a promising DAS alternative able to enhance the imaging reconstruction in terms of contrast and damage detectability. However, DMAS is still affected by high levels of artifacts. To tackle this aspect, literature offers a beamforming algorithm called double-stage DMAS (DS-DMAS), first introduced in photoacoustic imaging and medical ultrasound imaging. In this article, the DS-DMAS performance is analyzed for Lamb waves inspection, to provide an exhaustive comparison between DAS, DMAS, and DS-DMAS. As a further step, a filtering process addressed as Fresnel zone filtering (FZF) is used to restrict the beamforming partial sums in a physical way to the area around the scattering point. The proposed approach is an adaptation of a well-established technique in seismic data processing called Fresnel migration, able to suppress artifacts and enhance the quality of the imaging. The algorithms have been compared and characterized by exploiting an online free dataset for guided waves inspection (ht.tp://openguidedwaves.de/) which collects piezo pitch-catch signals traveling through a quasi-isotropic carbon fiber-reinforced plate (CFRP) at different actuated frequencies and damage positions. Summary: Hybrid methods combining physical knowledge and data‐driven techniques have shown great potential for damage prognosis in structural health monitoring (SHM). Current practices consider the physics‐based process and data‐driven measurement equations to describe the damage evolution and the mapping between the damage state and the measurement, respectively. However, the bias between the measurements predicted by the data‐driven equation and the sensor‐based measurements obtained from any SHM system, arising from uncertainties like damage geometries and sensor placement or noise, can lead to inaccurate prognosis results. To improve the prognosis performance in case of bias, this paper adopts a methodology typically applied in sensor fault diagnosis and develops a new hybrid prognostic model with a bias parameter included in the measurement equation and the state vector. Particle filter (PF) serves as the estimation technique to identify the state and parameters relating to the damage as well as the bias parameter, and the remaining useful life (RUL) can be predicted by the physics‐based process equation, with PF posterior estimates of the related parameters and state variables as an input. The experimental study of an aluminum lug structure subject to fatigue crack growth and equipped with a Lamb wave monitoring system demonstrates the improved estimation and prediction performances of the new prognostic model.
