In 2015 a geothermal exploration well was drilled on the island of Tutuila, American Samoa. The sample suite from the drill core provides 645 m of volcanic stratigraphy from a Samoan volcano, spanning 1.45 million years of volcanic history. In the Tutuila drill core, shield lavas with an EM2 (enriched mantle 2) signature are observed at depth, spanning 1.46 to 1.44 Ma. These are overlain by younger (1.35 to 1.17 Ma) shield lavas with a primordial "common" (focus zone) component interlayered with lavas that sample a depleted mantle component. Following ~1.15 Myr of volcanic quiescence, rejuvenated volcanism initiated at 24.3 ka and samples an EM1 (enriched mantle 1) component. The timing of the initiation of rejuvenated volcanism on Tutuila suggests that rejuvenated volcanism may be tectonically driven, as Samoan hotspot volcanoes approach the northern terminus of the Tonga Trench. This is consistent with a model where the timing of rejuvenated volcanism at Tutuila and at other Samoan volcanoes relates to their distance from the Tonga Trench. Notably, the Samoan rejuvenated lavas have EM1 isotopic compositions distinct from shield lavas that are geochemically similar to "petit spot" lavas erupted outboard of the Japan Trench and late stage lavas erupted at Christmas Island located outboard of the Sunda Trench. Therefore, like the Samoan rejuvenated lavas, petit spot volcanism in general appears to be related to tectonic uplift outboard of subduction zones, and existing geochemical data suggest that petit spots share similar EM1 isotopic signatures. In an attempt to determine the helium and neon isotopic composition of the lower oceanic crust, we report new noble gas measurements on 11 million year old gabbros from Ocean Drilling Program site 735B in the Indian Ocean. The nine whole rock samples analyzed came from 20 to 500 m depth below the seafloor. Helium contents vary from 3.3×10−10 to 2.5×10−7 ccSTP/g by crushing and from 5.4×10−8 to 2.4×10−7 ccSTP/g by melting. 3He/4He ratios vary between 2.2 and 8.6 Ra by crushing and between 2.9 and 8.2 by melting. The highest R/Ra ratios are similar to the mean mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) ratio of 8±1. The lower values are attributed to radiogenic helium from in situ α-particle production during uranium and thorium decay. Neon isotopic ratios are similar to atmospheric ratios, reflecting a significant seawater circulation in the upper 500 m of exposed crust at this site. MORB-like neon, with elevated 20Ne/22Ne and 21Ne/22Ne ratios, was found in some high temperature steps of heating experiments, but with very small anomalies compared to air. These first results from the lower oceanic crust indicate that subducted lower oceanic crust has an atmospheric 20Ne/22Ne ratio. Most of this neon must be removed during the subduction process, if the ocean crust is to be recirculated in the upper mantle, otherwise this atmospheric neon will overwhelm the upper mantle neon budget. Similarly, the high (U+Th)/3He ratio of these crustal gabbros will generate very radiogenic 4He/3He ratios on a 100 Ma time scale, so lower oceanic crust cannot be recycled into either MORB or oceanic island basalt without some form of processing. Abstract Thallium (Tl) isotope compositions of ocean island basalts (OIBs) have been proposed as a novel tracer of subducted oceanic crust and sediments in ocean island basalt sources, which could act as direct confirmation that deep mantle recycling eventually resurfaces through mantle upwelling to form ocean island basalt magmatism. However, it is unknown if oceanic crust that went through an active subduction zone would retain the Tl isotope compositions recorded in hydrothermally altered oceanic crust and authigenic marine sediments. In this study we present Tl isotope and concentration data for samples of subducted oceanic crust from five different locations: Zambezi Belt, Zambia; Cabo Ortegal complex, Iberian Massif, Spain; Raspas Complex, southwest Ecuador; Syros island, Cyclades, Greece; Tian Shan, northwest China. Thallium concentrations in most samples follow strong linear relationships with K, Rb, Cs and Ba, which strongly suggest that the mineral phengite is the primary control of Tl abundances in subducted oceanic crust. This conclusion is consistent with recent Tl data sets for arc lavas that imply residual phengite in the arc lava source regions as a strong control of Tl recycling. We find that Tl isotope compositions vary widely and systematically in each location depending on the protolith, metamorphic and metasomatic history of the samples. Samples from Cabo Ortegal and Raspas Complex reveal Tl isotope compositions similar to their protoliths, which were comprised of low-temperature altered oceanic crust. Tian Shan metamorphic rocks and Zambian eclogites reveal invariant Tl isotope values indistinguishable from average mantle, which is best explained by overprinting by metamorphic fluids that contained high concentrations of Tl and other alkali metals. Samples from Syros reveal a range of Tl isotope compositions from normal mantle towards values for pelagic clay sediments. The sediment-like values in Syros likely arose from fluids released from the surrounding mélange matrix that consists of serpentinite, metagabbros and metasediments. Each of the three Tl isotope ranges observed for subducted oceanic crust samples here are mirrored by individual OIB locations. Cabo Ortegal and Raspas Complex display Tl isotope compositions identical to St. Helena, suggesting that the HIMU component likely comprises subduction modified low-temperature altered oceanic crust. Thallium isotope ratios in Zambia and Tian Shan eclogites and blueschists are identical to lavas from Iceland, whereas Syros metamorphic rocks overlap almost exactly with lavas from Hawaii. Our data, therefore, show that Tl isotope compositions of oceanic crust and sediments can be traced through the subduction process and eventually is expressed largely unmodified in ocean island basalts. The crust underlying the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, known as the Sabine block, is largely unknown as far as its origin and age are concerned. We date zircons in granite xenoliths and from pyroclastic rocks from the Prairie Creek lamproite pipe that penetrates the block. Zircons from the granites show U-Pb ages ranging from 1800 to 1600 Ma, quite different from adjacent Grenville or Gondwana-affiliated blocks. This age range correlates with rocks in the Yavapai-Mazatal terrane of North America, implying that the Sabine block could be a promontory to the continental core. The ages also correlate with parts of the Amazon craton, northeast Greenland, Baltica, and Cathaysia, raising the less likely possibility of an exotic origin. Regardless, the Sabine block must have been accreted to North America before 1.4 Ga, requiring the Iapetus Ocean suture to be to the south and not extend through the Ouachita fold belt. Sediments are actively subducted in virtually every arc worldwide. However, quantifying their contributions to arc lavas and thereby establishing budgets of how sediments participate in slab-mantle interaction is challenging. In this contribution we use thallium (Tl) abundances and isotopic compositions of lavas from the Ryukyu arc (including south Kyushu) and its back-arc basin, Okinawa Trough, to investigate the influence of sediments from arc to back-arc. We also present extensive geochemical data for sediments and altered oceanic crust (AOC) outboard of the northern (DSDP Sites 296, 442B, 443 and 444) and central (DSDP Sites 294 and 295) part of the Ryukyu arc. The Tl isotopic compositions of sediments change systematically from lighter outboard of northern Ryukyu arc to heavier outboard of central Ryukyu arc. The feature reflects the dominance of terrigenous material and pelagic sedimentation outboard of the northern and central Ryukyu arc, respectively. Central and northern sections of Ryukyu arc and Okinawa Trough display larger range of Tl isotopic variation than southern section, which is consistent with more pelagic provenance for sediments outboard of central and northern Ryukyu arcs than that of expected sediments outboard of southern Ryukyu arc. Identical Tl, Sr, Nd and Pb isotope variations are found when comparing arc and back arc lavas, which indicates that sediments fluxes also account for the Tl isotopic variations in the Okinawa Trough lavas. Two-end-member mixing models of Tl with Pb, Sr and Nd isotopes require sediment inputs of< 1%, 0.1–1% and 0.3–2% by weight to the depleted mantle source to account for all these isotopic compositions of lavas from northern, central and southern portion of the Ryukyu arc and Okinawa Trough. Bulk mixing between mantle and sediment end members predict very similar sediment fluxes when using Tl, Sr, Nd and Pb isotopes, which indicates that fractionation of these elements must have happened after mixing between mantle and sediments. This conclusion is corroborated by model calculations of mixing between sediment melts with fractionated Sr/Nd ratios and mantle wedge, which show that no arc lava plot on such mixing lines. Thus bulk sediment mixing, rather than sediment melt, is required for the generation of the lavas from the Ryukyu arc and Okinawa Trough. The requirement of bulk sediment mixing occurring before trace element fractionation in the sub-arc mantle is consistent with models where mélange layers form at the top of the slab and are the principle source material for arc lavas. In addition, the fact that sediment components observed in the Ryukyu arc and Okinawa Trough lavas are similar, suggests that transport of mélange material to the source regions of the arc and back arc is equally efficient. Fluids driven off the subducting Pacific plate infiltrate the shallow Mariana forearc and lead to extensive serpentinization of mantle peridotite. However, the sources, pathways, and chemical modifications of ascending, slab-derived fluids remain poorly constrained and controversial. In this study, we use thallium (Tl) concentrations and isotopic ratios of serpentinized peridotite and rodingitized diabase from the South Chamorro and Conical Seamounts to discriminate between potential fluid sources with distinct Tl isotope compositions. Serpentinite samples from the Mariana forearc all display ε 205 Tl > − 0.5 (where ε 205 Tl = 10 , 000 × ( Tl 205 / Tl sample 203 − Tl 205 / Tl SRM 997 203 ) / ( Tl 205 / Tl SRM 997 203 ) ), which is significantly enriched in 205 Tl compared to the normal mantle ( ε 205 Tl = − 2 ). Given that high temperature hydrothermal processes do not impart significant Tl isotope fractionation, the isotope compositions of the serpentinites must reflect that of the serpentinizing fluid. Pelagic sediments are the only known slab component that consistently displays ε 205 Tl > − 0.5 and, therefore, we interpret the heavy Tl isotope signatures as signifying that the serpentinizing fluids were derived from subducting pelagic sediments. A rodingitized diabase from Conical Seamount was found to have an ε 205 Tl of 0.8, suggesting that sediment-sourced serpentinization fluids could also affect diabase and other mafic lithologies in the shallow Mariana forearc. Forearc rodingitization of diabase led to a strong depletion in Tl content and a virtually complete loss of K, Na and Rb. The chemical composition of hybrid fluids resulting from serpentinization of harzburgite with concomitant rodingitization of diabase can be highly alkaline, depleted in Si, yet enriched in Ca, Na, K, and Rb, which is consistent with the composition of fluids emanating from mud volcanoes in the Mariana forearc. Our study suggests that fluid–rock interactions between sedimentary, mafic, and ultramafic lithologies are strongly interconnected even in the shallowest parts of subduction zones. We conclude that transfer of fluids and dissolved elements at temperatures and pressures below 400 °C and 1 GPa, respectively, must be taken into account when elemental budgets and mass transfer between the subducting plate, the forearc, the deep mantle and the ocean are evaluated. The Early Jurassic Talkeetna Volcanic Formation forms the upper stratigraphic level of an oceanic volcanic arc complex within the Peninsular Terrane of south-central Alaska. The section comprises a series of lavas, tuffs, and volcaniclastic debris-flow and turbidite deposits, showing significant lateral facies variability. There is a general trend toward more volcaniclastic sediment at the top of the section and more lavas and tuff breccias toward the base. Evidence for dominant submarine, mostly mid-bathyal or deeper (>500 m) emplacement is seen throughout the section, which totals ∼7 km in thickness, similar to modern western Pacific arcs, and far more than any other known exposed section. Subaerial sedimentation was rare hut occurred over short intervals in the middle of the section. The Talkeetna Volcanic Formation is dominantly calc-alkaline and shows no clear trend to increasing SiO2 up-section. An oceanic subduction petrogenesis is shown by trace element and Nd isotope data. Rocks at the base of the section show no relative enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREEs) versus heavy rare earth elements (REEs) or in melt-incompatible versus compatible high field strength elements (HFSEs). Relative enrichment of LREEs and HFSEs increases slightly up-section. The Talkeetna Volcanic Formation is typically more REE depleted than average continental crust, although small volumes of light REE-enriched and heavy REE-depleted mafic lavas are recognized low in the stratigraphy. The Talkeetna Volcanic Formation was formed in an intraoceanic arc above a northdipping subduction zone and contains no preserved record of its subsequent collisions with Wrangellia or North America.
