We apply seismic tomography to 590,213 P‐wave arrival‐time data of 23,486 local earthquakes and 300,051 relative travel‐time residuals of 27,492 teleseismic events to study the 3‐D velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the entire Philippine Sea Plate (PSP) and its adjacent areas. Our results reveal significant high‐velocity anomalies beneath the Philippine Trench, the Japan‐Izu‐Bonin‐Mariana Trench, and the Nankai Trough, which reflect the subducted Philippine Sea slab, the Pacific slab, and the Shikoku Basin, respectively. On the basis of the tomographic images, we construct morphological models of these slabs. The slab morphologies become complex from the east to west. Taking into account previous results of geochemistry, paleomagnetism and numerical simulations, we deem that the complicated morphologies of the subducted slabs are related to the slab age, subduction rate, collision between different plates, clockwise rotation of the PSP, and retreat rate of trenches. Plain Language Summary: The Philippine Sea Plate (PSP) is almost entirely surrounded by subduction zones. We use P‐wave tomography to study the 3‐D velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the entire PSP for a better understanding of the slab geometry and subduction dynamics. Our tomographic results reveal obvious high‐velocity (high‐V) anomalies beneath the trenches around the PSP, which reflect the subducting Philippine Sea slab, the Pacific slab, and the Shikoku Basin. Crustal thickness and composition are closely related to geology and tectonic evolution of the region. Studying the differences in the crustal thickness and composition of the South China Block (SCB) is important to gain a comprehensive understanding of multi-phase amalgamation, breakup, reworking, and regional geodynamic processes. In this study, teleseismic data from 135 high-density portable broadband stations from SinoProbe were processed using Common Conversion Point (CCP) stacking and H-κ stacking methods. The Moho depth and P-wave and S-wave velocity ratio (Vp/Vs) were studied. Our results revealed several insights about the tectonic processes in the SCB. First, the crustal structure and Vp/Vs ratios of the Cathaysia Block, Jiangnan Orogenic Belt, and Yangtze Block were significantly different. The average depth of the Moho in the Cathaysia Block was approximately 31 km, and the Vp/Vs ratios increased from the inland area (1.66) to the coastal area (1.78), indicating the oceanward increase of mafic proportion in the lower crust, which is related to the influence of the Paleo-Pacific Plate westward subduction. Second, the crustal thickness of Jiangnan Orogenic Belt deepens from east ca. 31 to the west ca. 42 km and the Vp/Vs ratios varied from 1.75 to 1.64, illustrating a relatively felsic crust, which could have been related to the Mesozoic upper crustal thickening under compression followed by the lower crust removal under the extensional background. Third, the average crustal thickness of the Yangtze Block was 42 km, and the Vp/Vs ratios ranged from 1.64 to 1.84, presenting a positive correlation between the Moho depth and the Vp/Vs ratio, which is explained by the relatively thick mafic lower crust. Based on the variations in the crustal structure and Vp/Vs ratios of the profile, we inferred that the central part of the Jiangnan Orogenic Belt was bounded by the Jiangshan-Shaoxing-Hengyang in the east and the Jiujiang-Shitai-Jishou in the west. The small-scale Moho depth undulations at the intersection of the Cathaysia Block and the Jiangnan Orogenic Belt could be related to the Mesozoic compression-extension geodynamic transformation. Massive lithospheric thinning occurred in eastern China and large‐scale magmatism in South China occurred in the Mesozoic. Some geodynamic models have been proposed to explain their mechanisms, but are not consistent with each other. We apply anisotropic tomography to 32,728 P‐wave travel time data of 479 teleseismic events recorded at 225 stations to study the 3‐D anisotropic Vp structure of the upper mantle beneath central‐east China. P‐wave radial anisotropy is investigated for the first time in the study region. Our results show that an obvious low‐velocity zone exists in the asthenosphere under the eastern part of our study region, which represents upwelling thermal flow from the Cathaysia block to the North China block (NCB) according to the results of azimuthal and radial anisotropies. A distinct high‐velocity zone with weak radial anisotropy exists under the middle Yangtze block, which is explained as the stable cratonic root. Two other weak high‐velocity zones appear near or within the mantle transition zone under the middle‐lower Yangtze River and the eastern NCB, which might be detached lithosphere or the stagnant Pacific slab. Combining with previous geological and geochemical results, we consider that both the NCB and the South China block have undergone a common geodynamic process in the Mesozoic due to their similar age trending of igneous rocks, which could be explained by a flat‐slab subduction model and a ridge subduction model. These two models are associated with the paleo‐Pacific plate subduction that might have played a key role in the evolution of eastern China. The Cathaysia Block is located in South China, along the western margin of the Pacific plate, and well known for its widespread granitoids and rich poly-metallic mineralization. Despite the numerous studies conducted in this region, some key questions are still in debate, which revolve around the detailed crustal architecture, the boundary between the western and eastern part of Cathaysia Block, and the geodynamic evolution and metallogenic settings in the Cathaysia Block. In this study, we have conducted a dense broad-band seismic observation in the Cathaysia Block, and obtained the fine crustal structure of it by using P-wave receiver functions and analyzing other geophysical and geological studies comprehensively. Our study has following findings: (1) the crust of the Cathaysia Block is ~31.5 km thick, thinner than that of the global continent, and is interpreted to have been thinned since the Late Mesozoic; (2) the Vp/Vs ratio of the Cathaysia Block is lower than that of the global continent, which implies there is no extensive underplating beneath the Cathaysia Block, or that the magma may be confined at bottom of the crust and formed a velocity gradient belt around Moho; (3) Zhenghe-Dapu fault is marked as the structural boundary between the western and eastern Cathaysia Block; (4) the western and eastern Cathaysia Block have different intra-crustal structures, petrochronology features and mineralization settings; (5) the subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate and the following roll-back could be responsible for the geodynamic evolution of the crustal deformation, as well as the widespread magmatism and mineralization. • Fine crustal structure of Cathaysia is obtained by new seismic survey. • Zhenghe-Dapu fault is the boundary between the east and west Cathaysia. • No extensive magmatic underplating beneath the Cathaysia Block. • Two-stage paleo-Pacific subduction led to the crustal structure of Cathaysia. • A detailed crustal thickness and Vp/Vs ratios map is constructed in the eastern SCB. • The Cathaysia crust was thickened in orogeny and then thinned by delamination. • Anhua-Luocheng fault marks the southwestern boundary of the JNO and the YZB. • Lithospheric extension and Pacific subduction led to the current metallogenesis. The eastern South China Block is characterized by multi-stage intra-continental collisions and orogeny from the Paleozoic to early Mesozoic, and strong magmatism and metallogenesis since the late Mesozoic. In order to further study the tectonics, magmatism and metallogenesis, we constructed a new model of crustal thickness and Vp/Vs ratio for the crust beneath the eastern South China Block using H-κ stacking of teleseismic P-wave radial receiver functions from 845 broadband seismic stations. New knowledge of the crustal structure and properties pertinent to the tectonics and metallogenesis is as follows: (1) the average crustal thickness beneath the eastern South China Block is 33 km. It is thinner and varies smoothly in the Cathaysia Block and Jiangnan Orogen, and gradually thickens to the northwest and reaches ~40 km in the Yangtze Block; (2) the average crustal Vp/Vs ratio of the eastern South China Block is ~1.72, lower than the global average value ~1.78. This implies an absence of a mafic lowermost crustal layer; (3) the Jiangnan Orogen is characterized by a conspicuous belt of lower Vp/Vs ratios, different from the Yangtze and Cathaysia Blocks on either side. This is interpreted as caused by synorogenic crustal thickening and the subsequent lower crustal delamination; (4) the crustal thickness and the Vp/Vs ratios in the eastern South China Block are negatively correlated, also indicating tectonic thickening of a felsic upper and middle crust. This is consistent with folding and thrusting during orogenesis and the later delamination of the mafic lower crust; (5) the Anhua-Luocheng fault is considered to be the southwestern segment of the boundary between the Yangtze Block and Jiangnan Orogen; (6) lithospheric extension caused by subduction of the Pacific Plate and the corresponding slab rollback during the late Mesozoic can explain the crustal thickness, the Vp/Vs ratio distribution patterns and the metallogenesis in the eastern South China Block. A 3-D P-wave velocity structure down to 750 km beneath the eastern South China Block is obtained by using a large number of high-quality teleseismic data. Based on our results and those of previous studies, we suggest that late Mesozoic magmatism and lithospheric thinning in the eastern South China Block could be attributed to the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate and its eastward rollback. The eastern South China Block (ESCB) is characterized by intense magmatism in the late Mesozoic. To further investigate the mechanism of late Mesozoic magmatism, we apply the tomographic method to construct a P-wave velocity model down to 750 km by using 40,989 P-wave arrival times collected from 687 teleseismic events recorded by 191 stations. Our model shows that (1) a high-Vp anomaly is observed beneath the lower Yangtze Block (YZB) and northern Cathaysia Block (CAB) in the crust and uppermost mantle, which could represent the present lithosphere; (2) two high-Vp anomalies are observed in the upper mantle beneath the YZB, which could be the detached lithosphere and the relict of the subducted SCB; (3) the break-off of the subducted Eurasian Plate has penetrated the 410 km discontinuity beneath central and northern Taiwan Island; (4) the stagnant Paleo-Pacific Plate in the MTZ is mainly beneath the lower YZB; (5) the low-Vp anomaly in the upper mantle that is immediately above the stagnant Paleo-Pacific Plate may represent the thermal asthenosphere caused by plate dehydration; and (6) the low-Vp anomaly beneath the southern CAB extends from the crust downward to the MTZ, which may represent an 'upward channel' for thermal materials. Based on our results and those of previous studies, we suggest that late Mesozoic magmatism in the ESCB could be highly associated with the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate and its eastward rollback. • Tomography with a dense seismic array reveals the upper-mantle structure in SE China. • A low-velocity zone with high Poisson's ratio exists under the western Cathaysia block. • The low-velocity zone reflects thermal flow causing the late Mesozoic mineralization. Our study region is located in the Cathaysia block (CB), Southeast China. The most significant feature of the CB is the widespread Mesozoic magmatism and poly-metallic mineralization. However, there is still no consensus on their genesis and related tectonic processes. In this study, we determine high-resolution (0.3° in the horizontal direction) tomographic images of Vp and Vs and Vp/Vs ratio in the crust and upper mantle using 6773 P-wave and 4526 S-wave travel-time data of teleseismic events recorded by a broadband linear seismic array. The array was deployed by our team in the middle part of the CB, consisting of 81 portable stations with an interval of 5–8 km. Our tomographic results reveal two obvious low-velocity (low-V) zones with high Vp/Vs ratio (high-σ) beneath the Nanling ore belt and the Wuyishan terrane, which may reflect magmatic channels formed by partial melting that may provide heat for metal mineralization. Two high-V anomalies with low-σ are located beneath the western Wuyishan terrane and the eastern CB, which may represent refractory lithosphere or remnants of delaminated lithospheric material caused by underplating of the magma due to the subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate and its following rollback. There exists an anomaly with low-Vp, high-Vs and low-σ at depths of 150–300 km beneath the western Wuyishan terrane, which may be related to the reserved trace of magmatic conduits. On the basis of the tomographic results, we propose a geodynamic model to explain the deep mechanism of mineralization beneath the CB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the crustal structure and tectonics in the north Tibetan Plateau from the Songpan-Ganzi terrane to the Qaidam Basin using teleseismic receiver-function imaging, across a major lithospheric boundary, the Kunlun-Qaidam boundary, where previous studies suggest a ~15–20-km change in crustal thickness from thicker crust in the Kunlun Mountains to thinner crust in the Qaidam Basin. We report P receiver functions for 70 stations, largely the International Deep Profiling of Tibet and the Himalaya (INDEPTH), phase IV, experiment. Our most dense station coverage is located along the roughly north-south INDEPTH-IV active-source seismic profile at approximately 95° E longitude. Azimuthal and geographical changes in the receiver functions reveal significant changes in crustal structure and V p /V s from across the study area. Receiver functions show strong converters that we interpret as the Moho at ~70 km depth beneath the Qiangtang, Songpan-Ganzi terranes and Kunlun Mountains and at ~50 km depth beneath the central Qaidam Basin. This large change in crustal thickness occurs >50 km north of the North Kunlun strike-slip fault, on which the 2001 M8.1 Kunlun earthquake occurred. Receiver functions for some of the stations north of the thickness change at the Kunlun-Qaidam boundary also show a deeper ~70-km bright converter in addition to the 50-km converter. The two converters appear to overlap by up to ~30 km in some locations along the south Qaidam Basin. We combine previous results with these new results to discuss implications for mechanisms for crustal thickening in the north Tibetan Plateau including crustal flow and crustal injection. At depths imaged here, shallower than ~100 km, we see no evidence of southward subduction of Eurasian lithosphere. • Seismic data reveals lithospheric structure and composition in North Tibet. • The crustal thickness changes from 70 to 50 km beneath the Kunlun-Qaidam boundary. • North Tibet may have thickened as a result of crustal flow or injection.
