GENDER affirmation surgery , *TRANSGENDER people , *FATWAS , *SUBJECTIVITY - Abstract
Gender Affirmation Surgery (GAS), or Amali Tasdigi Jinsiyat in Persian, was permitted by Ayatollah Khomeini's fatwa in 1982. Although GAS is allowed under Islamic law, trans subjectivities in Iran are misrecognized. Here we investigate the construction of trans subjectivities in Iranian society through an intersectional analysis of different power relations. We analyse discourses and practices of gender at structural, institutional and individual levels. We build on the concept of 'epistemic misrecognition' to explain how Iranian trans people's status is misrecognized both inside and outside Iran, which has made Iranian trans people and their experience invisible in society. Furthermore, we employ the notion of 'subjectivation' to describe the multiplicities of trans subjectivation in Iranian society. We apply Critical Discourse Analysis to analyse forty-six semi-structured face-to-face interviews conducted during 2015–2018. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HIGHER education , *ACADEMIC debating , *ACTIVISM , *NEOLIBERALISM , *CENTRALITY , *SUBJECTIVITY - Abstract
The relationship between activism and academia has been a source of debate since many decades. This debate has been reissued by the neoliberal model in higher education and the managerial culture setting up as a reference for thinking about the university. Some important repercussions of this context are the way academics understand their work, their relationships with their peers and their role in the university. Despite the centrality of this problem, we know little about the impact it has on the academics' work culture. The findings we share in this paper are the result of the discursive analysis of 60 interviews with researchers from various disciplines conducted during 2016 and 2021. Based on the analyzed interviews, this article examines the constructed boundaries between activism and academia and contributes to the debate by recognizing the academics' political subjectivity. THEORY of knowledge , *CONTROL (Psychology) , *SUBJECTIVITY - Abstract
During 1985 and 1986, Gilles Deleuze directed a seminar on Michel Foucault's work at the University of Paris 8 at Vincennes/St. Denis. The course was divided into three parts, one dedicated to each of the three levels on which, according to Deleuze, Foucault's concept of thinking unfolds: knowledge, power, and subjectivation. As I will show, Deleuze's attempt to reconstruct Foucault's perspective on the history of thought is highly enlightening, although, at some crucial points, it raises doubts regarding the plausibility of the hypotheses that Deleuze attributed to Foucault. In particular, in the third part, which focuses on subjectivation, it is not clear whether Deleuze was attempting to relate Foucault's concept or to expose his own ideas on the topic. The displacements, which Deleuze introduced into Foucault's perspective, are particularly interesting, since they are symptomatic of broader epistemological problems that philosophical thought currently faces in attempting to articulate a consistent perspective of the possibility of an "outside" of power or, in Foucault's formulation, knowledge/power. SUBJECTIVITY , *MAPUCHE (South American people) , *NEOLIBERALISM - Abstract
This article examines intercultural discourses in the Mapuche context of the Araucanía region of Chile, based on the material and enunciative conditions which sustain their circulation. These conditions shape an environment where, over the last 30 years, developmentalist rhetoric has defined the State's intercultural project. This has criminalized ways of life that oppose extractivism as a model of development. The systematicity of violence continues to reproduce other types of systematicities, such as practices of resistance which adopt the specific form of 'territorial control'. This article proposes that such practices, or counter-conducts to ethnodevelopment, are political technologies that produce new subjectivities and ways of life. They involve a strong commitment to the 'truth' of collective memory for individuals who are exposed to life-threatening or 'borderline' experiences caused by a militarized neoliberal rationale. SUBJECTIVITY , *MARXIST analysis , *READING , *PHILOSOPHERS , *GOAL (Psychology) , *GOVERNMENTALITY - Abstract
The article elucidates the concept of subjectivity in Karl Marx, while providing an analysis from a Heideggerian and a Foucaultian perspective. Furthermore, the aim of the article is to determine the relevance of the categories elaborated by Heidegger and Foucault in the analysis of the Marxist concept of subjectivity. In order to achieve this goal, the article is divided into three sections. First, the concept of subjectivity is studied as it appears in Marx's works. Second, a Heideggerian reading of that concept is reconstructed from elements of the "early" and "later" Heidegger. Third, a Foucaultian reading of subjectivity is proposed from the coordinates of the notions of governmentality, veridiction and subjectivation. It is concluded that the readings of Heidegger and Foucault are, respectively, insufficient and partially sufficient, which does not exclude, however, the possibility of adding nuances to them in order to develop, with contributions from all three philosophers, a kind of "post-Heideggerian and post-Foucaultian Marxism". Focusing on the prevalence of the neuroscientific discourse in contemporaneity, the article aims to apprehend the ways in which pedagogical, psychological, biological and neurological knowledge has been articulated in a specific field in the current Brazilian educational discursive production in order to qualify its effects into the constitutive processes of both veridiction and subjectivities. Theoretically and methodologically inspired on Michel Foucault, its source is a Nova Escolas's publications set, an educational dissemination magazine, published between 2011 and 2016. The statements discursive analysis shows three main aspects: the articulation between body and subjectivity; the updating of expertise discourses on the pathologization of life and medicalization processes; the reconfiguration of the cognition policies. This article presents reflections on the categories of adolescence, socio-educational measures, governability, moralities and subjectivity through an ethnography about experiences of crime life, and centered on narratives of boys and girls in compliance with socio-educational measures in the southern region of Brazil. It discusses the moral dimension that permeates the discourses and practices of/about these subjects, and especially the State's management of them through processes of judicialization, tutelage, institutionalization and moral orthopedics. It also reflects on the effects of these processes on the production of subjectivities as well as the subjects' resistances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of “subject”, although is present in the reflection of human sciences since the time of classical philosophy, continues to present itself as complex and highly ambiguous. In psychoanalytic theory the paradox is concretized by the high frequence of the reference to the subject (in the Freudian Works the word subject appears more than a thousand times) but Freud never specified what is meant by this term. Moreover, in contemporary psychoanalysis in particular, expressions such as subjectivation and subjectivity are frequently used, even if there is no univocal conception of what a subject is. This paper aims to highlight how the subject is a polyphonic concept and how its escape from a definition is characteristic of its dynamism and its perpetual oscillation between the extremes of its semantic field, from subjection to substance.

SOCIAL problems ,SUBJECTIVITY ,AMBIVALENCE ,RESPONSIBILITY ,SUFFERING - Abstract
How is our subjection to the social law experienced? What is the role played by responsibility in our response to normative calls? Does lawful address embrace social vulnerability or rather does it cover its problem? The paper discusses the genesis of the responsible subjectivity from a phenomenological and a social standpoint, confronting Levinas’ phenomenological perspective on ethical responsibility with Althusser’s and Butler’s account of the subjective interpellation. If ethical and normative interpellation are often seen as overlapping, this paper discusses their differences as a critical resource for the phenomenological theory of subjectivity. The problem of the social law is analyzed in light of the material phenomenality of social suffering and of the ambivalence at work at the heart of any process of subjectivation. This article examines the relations between subjectivity and governmentality in the work of Michel Foucault in order to clarify the elements involved in his strategy to escape from neoliberal forms of subjectivation. Thus, I examine how subjectivity emerges from the tension between being a control device and at the same time a place of resistance. Foucault's strategy is based on the understanding of processes of nationalization and State practices, from which we might understand how we have become what we are and, on this basis, resist the processes of subjectivation promoted by state practices. This article aims to discuss and problematize the modes of subjectivation concerning the female body in gender discussions and their relations with contemporary consumer society. Therefore, a theoretical study was carried out, based on the concepts of biopower and control society proposed by Foucault and Deleuze, to identify the forms of agency of bodies in contemporary times and the normative beauty standards. Understanding the ideal body from the understanding of the power games that permeate social relationships, we sought to reflect on the discursive practices that enable the construction of gender and engender possible modes of subjectivation in the social tissue, from the discussion of gender theories formulated by Judith Butler. This work analyzes two images produced by the collectives Maruim and C.H.O.C Documental based on the aesthetic regime of the arts identified by Jacques Rancière. Its objective is to reflect on possible and potential ways of portraying the "real" in the scope of photojournalism that acts in a counter- hegemonic way. The analysis unfolds in three axes: in the first, the three main regimes of art in the Western tradition (ethical, poetic-representative and aesthetic) are presented, as well as the sharing of the sensitive; in the second, it discusses the notions around what the philosopher calls aesthetic effectiveness and its applicability; finally, in the third, the images that make up the corpus of this work are resumed, which are related to the prosaic and banal power in the construction of other aesthetic-political subjectivities. This paper focuses on the so-called evidential uses of English copular perception verbs, or CPVs (look, sound, taste, smell and feel), and their relationship with the two concepts of evidentiality and epistemicity. It reviews different positions concerning CPVs and their semantics regarding evidentiality and epistemicity. It also endeavours to delimit the evidential and epistemic categories, taking into account the four different types of relationships between them – undifferentiation, inclusion, overlap and disjunction – and addressing the corollary concepts of (inter)subjectivity and speaker stance. The corpus-based analysis then develops a typology of predicative complements, which helps to accomplish three main goals: first, to demonstrate what characteristics make CPVs evidentials; second, to determine what features of the verb or the sentence convey an epistemic reading; third, to show that CPV sentences display converse degrees of evidentiality and epistemicity. This cognitive- and function-based study demonstrates that CPVs have both an evidential meaning, as they denote perceptual and inferential evidentiality, and a modalising use or epistemic extension as they express a (speaker) judgement on sensory data or perceived appearances. As inference is an overlap domain between evidentiality and epistemicity, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the two dimensions. Subjectivity is analysed as a way of reconciling evidentiality and epistemicity in CPV sentences. Specifically, CPV sentences convey a markedly subjective viewpoint: the ‘perceptual’ relationship is subjectively construed as the conceptualiser is at the centre of inferential and evaluative processes – where prototypical perception reports express immediate perception by the experiencer. CPV sentences are thus regarded as clear illustrations of subjectification, and CPVs of grammaticalisation. Although CPV sentences all denote a sensory-based experience which serves as the basis for an inferential process leading to the expression of the conceptualiser’s stance on the situation, they encompass various domains of human cognition and express propositional attitudes.

ACADEMIC discourse , *COMMODIFICATION , *SUBJECTIVITY , *SOCIAL dominance , *OPENING ceremonies - Abstract
This paper addresses the academic writing as an oversight mechanism regarding technic and scientific discourse. Additionally, it analyzes defining features of scientific papers on the point of its dominance in academic publications and its function as a subjectivity instrument among university professors and researchers. From the antinomy of writing opening/closing in an analytic logic, it discusses the creation's patterns, production and distribution of the academic papers in current conditions when facing knowledge commodification. Furthermore, it shows how the academic guidelines policies generate writing's suppression and submissiveness. This analysis presents the academic paper as a "closed" and dystopic way of writing in humanities, that seems to contradict its heuristic and creative function when building and interpreting social matters. Finally, it attracts humanities writers and researchers' attention to defend and relay, from the writing itself, in alternative ways to resist an extreme instrumentalization of writing. This article puts Michel Foucault and Frantz Fanon into dialogue in order to explore the relationships between the constitution of subjects and the production of truth in modern Western societies as well as in colonial spaces. Firstly, it takes into account Foucault’s analysis of confessional practices and the effects of subjection, objectivation, and subjectivation generated by the injunction for the subject to tell the truth about him or herself. Secondly, it focuses on the question of interpellation that emerges in the colonial context and on the colonized who, as Fanon illustrates, is always seen as a deceitful subject. Finally, it shows that, despite the difference in the relationships between the constitution of subjectivity and the production of true discourses described by Foucault and Fanon, the transformative dimension enacted by the processes of subjectivation and by the practices of resistance constitutes a shared conceptual and political ground between the two authors. The attempt of this paper is to build a discussion between Giorgio Agamben and Jacques Lacan about their theories of the subject. Our lecture of Agamben’s theory of subjectivity is determined by the thesis that the birth of subjectivity depends on the structure of the exception and that this implies that « shame » is the subject’s elementary structure. After exposing this thesis about the agambenian subjectivity, we will show how some of its aspects can be related to the subject of unconscious as it has been theorized by Lacan. This comparison will allow us to look, in the thought of Agamben and Lacan, for another way to elaborate the emergence of the subjectivity. Finally, we will assess the connections of the lacanian and the agambenian alternatives with the linguistic of Ferdinand de Saussure.

This article examines the emergence of a ‘financial subject’ in the transformation of the UK economy since 1979, using a critical realist approach to subjectivity that investigates underlying causal mechanisms and structures as they affect daily life. Financial restructuring, including widespread borrowing and increasing personal investment, has forged links between finance markets and personal finance, as workers’ wages are financialized. This engenders entrepreneurial subjectivity, with individuals interpellated to be self-reliant in managing possible risks. It argues that the process of subjectivation, where individuals recognize themselves and their goals relative to financial markets, exemplifies the development of financialization itself, since it gives an insight into the successful reproduction of social relations of finance. It illustrates the instability related to wages and inequality, as some subjects have to contend with unpredictable employment prospects as potential future risks that complicate the practices of personal investment and borrowing, creating new hierarchies bound up with the financialization of the economy. The objective in the article is to establish methodological dimensions to analyze contemporary societies, links and processes of subjectivation, in their relations with images. First, I understand the notion of image in an extended sense to forms of social appropriation: fashions, consumption and tastes, designs, communication technologies and networks, are imaginals properties that intervene in normative productions of social practices. To achieve this general analysis, criteria must be established according to the object of study: the relations (not the actor or the system) are assumed as the general object of the social sciences, assuming the discursive logics of the social. Finally, we propose methodological specificities, understanding interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity as fundamental. The work on the imaginal, that is, on the indiscernibility between the social and the images, implies an approach of layered overlays, questioning essentialisms and binarisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIALIZATION , *SUBJECTIVITY , *SOCIAL theory , *SOCIAL structure , *EDUCATION & society - Abstract
An overview of some milestones in sociological theory leads to the review of some key contributions of interest to the sociological discussion on the process of becoming a subject. This paper presents the results of such overview, guided by the two major micro-sociological processes involved in the formation of the subject, socialization and subjectivation, and tries to formulate a single theory that emphasises the complementarity of both processes in the formation of the subject within the frame of social structure and its macro-sociological processes of social reproduction and change. In doing so, the starting point is the thesis that a subject is produced between constriction and possibility. The overview is concretized in the field of Education. The paper concludes with the formulation a theory in which action, subject and structure are interconnected through processes of both maintaining and challenging social structures, in so far as the reflexivity of practice makes social change possible. Translations of summary Pre-adolescents' difficulty in portraying and communicating the internal turmoil to which puberty subjects them, both through the immaturity of their psychic functions and through the conflict between display and secrecy, presents a constant challenge to the analyst. A technical solution for making the process of subjectivation more pleasant may be found in modelling with Play Doh, a game/non-game which is not age-specific, an expressive form capable of evoking in the analytic field fantasies and representations that are otherwise only accessible with difficulty. This paper aims to present some reflections on the characteristic features of the Play Doh game in the session, with particular regard to work with patients between 10 and 14 years old who are in the midst of the process of adolescent subjectivation. The paper examines the clinical history of a young adopted boy who was able to develop the ability to dream his own experience and to portray internal experiences which had previously been unrepresentable. The present article main proposition focuses on the turn made by Foucault when he takes into a new account the theme of the subjectivity, above all in the last two volumes of History of the Sexuality. Henceforth, our attention retraces the two characters of the subjectivity definition as a process or practice, it means, our relationship with the time and the creative or transformative dimension of the body. We argue, then, against the assertion that Foucault's last issue would imply the return of the subject or of the man that he had previously denied, that the last Foucault is consistent with the style that he had been building throughout his past books.

Schlusselworter: Coming-out, Homosexualitat, Subjektivierung, Identitat, Sprechakt ----- Who am I once I’ve come out? Coming out as a mechanism of subjectivation Summary The aim of this article is to show that (in contemporary Western society) the coming out of gay men goes beyond a “neutral description” of sexual desire. Three interviews with openly gay men were conducted and analyzed on the basis of poststructuralist and queer theory. It can thus be shown that identity, or subjectivity, is a substantial part of coming out, and that this contributes to coming out being closely linked to mechanisms of differentiation, hierarchization and normalization. Looking at the subject positions that emerge when someone comes out, it can be shown that homosexuality is not perceived as “equal” or “ordinary” and that even in a society that regards itself as liberal, coming out is caught up in power relations. By only considering coming out stories told by (gay) men, the focus of this study is very narrow. Keywords: coming out, homosexuality, subject positions, identity, speech act ----- Bibliographie: Schamschula, Monika: Wer bin ich nach einem Coming-out? This final master's paper explores the relationship between entrepreneurial subjectivity and the governmentality of the orange economy of the current national government in Colombia. The methodology is framed in the qualitative paradigm and the corresponding research techniques are the semi-structured interview and the documentary analysis. The paper sheds light on a new type of entrepreneurial subjectivity and opens the way for future work about entrepreneurship and subjectivity. It is concluded that the boost to entrepreneurship of the orange economy governmentality is related to aspects such as individualism, competition, and risk in the subjectivity of entrepreneurs.

VIOLENCE , *SOCIOLOGY methodology , *SYMBOLIC interactionism , *SUBJECTIVITY , *EDUCATION - Abstract
Violence has been a central preoccupation for political and social scientists, and this paper begins with a critical appraisal of the classical approaches to the phenomenon of violence, showing how despite their considerable differences, they are not necessarily contradictory. Via engagement with the recent work of Randall Collins, the paper pays particular attention to the limits of symbolic interactionism. The paper then places the subject central to sociological analysis, showing how it is possible to avoid the determinism of classical sociology by exploring the meaning of violence for the subjects who use it, and how these meanings relate to the processes of subjectivation and desubjectivation. MEMES ,OCCUPY Wall Street protest movement ,SUBJECTIVITY ,INTERNET & politics - Abstract
This article assesses Occupy Wall Street as an amalgamation of mediated processes of subjectivation associated with marginal popular culture (memes, meme-platforms, Anonymous operations). This accumulation, I argue, is part of a broader convergence of agencements, of subjectifying processes that took place on and offline, in and out of concentrated occupied zones. OWS gives us one example in response to Toni Negri's call for a genealogy of dispositifs of subjectivation from the perspective of resistance. In addition to examining the accumulation of mediated subjective apparatuses, I propose we think of OWS as an ecology, one that engenders an antagonistic response by a militarized biopolitical state subject (itself an accumulation). I end with some preliminary thoughts on OWS' recomposition after the state's decompositional dispositifs. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The reader Reading / Feeling is the result of a two-year art-theory research programme organised by the Dutch organization If I Can't Dance. Its innovation is not reflected in the selection of texts, but in the methodological approach of opening up a different (affective, paranoid) mode of reading. The compilation offers to a reader various entry points that are not to be taken in only rationally, but also experientially, to be precise, through an affective response. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The concept of artistic fact as an analytical and heuristic category has not been discussed a lot, and much less systematized; in response to this research deficit, a theorization and explanation is made of the relationship between subjectivity/objectivity/subjectivity based on creation, communication, and the co-creator reception-participant. Based on this, a critical evaluation balance is made of the main contemporary and current theories about the musical fact, with particular emphasis on those that reduce it to the tripartite analysis of the poietic, neutral and esthesic levels. Other criteria that seek to overcome semantic tripartition with a totalizing, integral or dialectical approach are also analyzed, also placing the number of levels, areas or dimensions, which is a contradiction in the terms to characterize musical creation, which due to its cultural and artistic nature, constitutes an open work. Thus, the conception of the musical fact is extended beyond the semantic dimension with emphasis on the axiological, the ethno-cultural and the didactic-pedagogical dimensions without exhausting them, since the musical fact, as the concretion of an open work, is multidimensional.

Palavras-Chave: Hannah Arendt; Judith Butler; Subjetivação; Psicanálise; NarrativaJUDITH BUTLER AND HANNAH ARENDT GO TO THE MOVIES: narrative, psychoanalysis and subjectification in the film Me, Myself and MumABSTRACTIn this article, I propose an analysis of the film Me, Myself and Mum (Les garçons et Guillaume, à table!
