Constraining the strength of gas turbulence in protoplanetary discs is an open problem that has relevant implications for the physics of gas accretion and planet formation. In this work, we gauge the amount of turbulence in six of the discs observed in the DSHARP programme by indirectly measuring the vertical distribution of their dust component. We employ the differences in the gap contrasts observed along the major and the minor axes due to projection effects, and build a radiative transfer model to reproduce these features for different values of the dust scale heights. We find that (a) the scale heights that yield a better agreement with data are generally low (⁠|$\lesssim 4\, \mathrm{AU}$| at a radial distance of |$100\, \mathrm{AU}$|⁠), and in almost all cases we are only able to place upper limits on their exact values; these conclusions imply (assuming an average Stokes number of ≈10−2) low turbulence levels of αSS ≲ 10−3 − 10−4; (b) for the 9 other systems we considered out of the DSHARP sample, our method yields no significant constraints on the disc vertical structure; we conclude that this is because these discs have either a low inclination or gaps that are not deep enough. The radial extent of millimetre dust in protoplanetary discs is often far smaller than that of their gas, mostly due to processes such as dust growth and radial drift. However, it has been suggested that current millimetre continuum observations of discs do not trace their full extent due to limited sensitivity. In this letter, we present deep (19  |$\mu$| Jy beam−1) moderate resolution (0.37 arcsec) ALMA observations at 1 mm of the nearest protoplanetary disc, TW Hya. Using the visibility analysis tool frank , we reveal a structured millimetre intensity distribution out to 100 au, well beyond previous estimates of 60–70 au. Our analysis suggests the presence of a new millimetre continuum gap at 82 au, coincident with similar features seen in optical/near-infrared scattered light and millimetre molecular line observations. Examination of the fit residuals confirms the presence of the previously reported au-scale continuum excess at 52 au (P.A. = 242.5°). Our results demonstrate the utility of combining deep, moderate-resolution observations with super-resolution analysis techniques to probe the faintest regions of protoplanetary discs. The 1.33-mm survey of protoplanetary discs in the Taurus molecular cloud found annular gaps and rings to be common in extended sources (≳ 55 au), when their 1D visibility distributions were fit parametrically. We first demonstrate the advantages and limitations of non-parametric visibility fits for data at the survey's 0.12-arcsec resolution. Then we use the non-parametric model in Frankenstein (frank) to identify new substructure in three compact and seven extended sources. Among the new features, we identify three trends: a higher occurrence rate of substructure in the survey's compact discs than previously seen, underresolved (potentially azimuthally asymmetric) substructure in the innermost disc of extended sources, and a 'shoulder' on the trailing edge of a ring in discs with strong depletion at small radii. Noting the shoulder morphology is present in multiple discs observed at higher resolution, we postulate it is tracing a common physical mechanism. We further demonstrate how a superresolution frank brightness profile is useful in motivating an accurate parametric model, using the highly structured source DL Tau in which frank finds two new rings. Finally, we show that sparse (u, v) plane sampling may be masking the presence of substructure in several additional compact survey sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For many years, protoplanetary discs have been thought to evolve viscously: angular momentum redistribution leads to accretion and outward disc spreading. Recently, the hypothesis that accretion is due, instead, to angular momentum removal by magnetic winds gained new popularity: no disc spreading is expected in this case. In this paper, we run several 1D gas and dust simulations to make predictions on the time evolution of disc sizes in the dust and to assess whether they can be used to understand how discs evolve. We show that viscous and magnetic wind models have very different dust disc radii. In particular, magnetohydrodynamic wind models are compact and their sizes either remain constant or decrease with time. On the contrary, discs become larger with time in the viscous case (when α ≳ 10−3). Although current observations lack enough sensitivity to discriminate between these two scenarios, higher sensitivity surveys could be fruitful to this goal on a |$1\!-\!10\, {\rm Myr}$| age range. When compared with the available ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) Band 7 data, both viscous and magnetic wind models are compatible with the observationally inferred dust radii in Lupus, Chamaeleon I, and Upper Sco. Furthermore, in the drift-dominated regime, the size–luminosity correlation is reproduced in Lupus, both in Band 7 and 3, while in Upper Sco a different slope than in the data is predicted. Sub-structures (potentially undetected) can explain several outliers with large observed sizes. Higher angular-resolution observations will be helpful to test our predictions in the case of more compact discs, expected in both frameworks, particularly at the age of Upper Sco. In recent years, a correlation between mass accretion rates onto new-born stars and their protoplanetary disc masses was detected in nearby young star-forming regions. Although such a correlation can be interpreted as due to viscous-diffusion processes in the disc, highly accreting sources with low disc masses in more evolved regions remain puzzling. In this paper, we hypothesize that the presence of a stellar companion truncating the disc can explain these outliers. First, we searched the literature for information on stellar multiplicity in Lupus, Chamaeleon I, and Upper Sco, finding that roughly 20 per cent of the discs involved in the correlation are in binaries or higher order multiple stellar systems. We prove with high statistical significance that at any disc mass these sources have systematically higher accretion rates than those in single-stars, with the bulk of the binary population being clustered around |$M_\mathrm{disc}/\dot{M}_\mathrm{acc}\approx 0.1\, \mathrm{Myr}$|⁠. We then run coupled gas and dust one-dimensional evolutionary models of tidally truncated discs to be compared with the data. We find that these models are able to reproduce well most of the population of observed discs in Lupus and Upper Sco, even though the unknown eccentricity of each binary prevents an object by object comparison. In the latter region, the agreement improves if the grain coagulation efficiency is reduced, as may be expected in discs around close binaries. The recently discovered exoplanets in binary or higher order multiple stellar systems sparked a new interest in the study of protoplanetary discs in stellar aggregations. Here, we focus on disc solids, as they make up the reservoir out of which exoplanets are assembled and dominate (sub-)millimetre disc observations. These observations suggest that discs in binary systems are fainter and smaller than in isolated systems. In addition, disc dust sizes are consistent with tidal truncation only if they orbit very eccentric binaries. In a previous study, we showed that the presence of a stellar companion hastens the radial migration of solids, shortening disc lifetime, and challenging planet formation. In this paper, we confront our theoretical and numerical results with observations: Disc dust fluxes and sizes from our models are computed at ALMA wavelengths and compared with Taurus and ρ  Ophiuchus data. A general agreement between theory and observations is found. In particular, we show that the dust disc sizes are generally smaller than the binary truncation radius due to the combined effect of grain growth and radial drift: Therefore, small disc sizes do not require implausibly high eccentricities to be explained. Furthermore, the observed binary discs are compatible within 1 σ with a quadratic flux–radius correlation similar to that found for single-star discs and show a close match with the models. However, the observational sample of resolved binary discs is still small and additional data are required to draw more robust conclusions on the flux–radius correlation and how it depends on the binary properties. Recent observations have revealed that most proto-planetary discs show a pattern of bright rings and dark gaps. However, most of the high-resolution observations have focused only on the continuum emission. In this paper, we present high-resolution ALMA band 7 (0.89 mm) observations of the disc around the star CI Tau in the 12CO & 13CO J  = 3–2 and CS J  = 7–6 emission lines. Our recent work demonstrated that the disc around CI Tau contains three gaps and rings in continuum emission, and we look for their counterparts in the gas emission. While we find no counterpart of the third gap and ring in 13CO, the disc has a gap in emission at the location of the second continuum ring (rather than gap). We demonstrate that this is mostly an artefact of the continuum subtraction, although a residual gap still remains after accounting for this effect. Through radiative transfer modelling, we propose this is due to the inner disc shadowing the outer parts of the disc and making them colder. This raises a note of caution in mapping high-resolution gas emission lines observations to the gas surface density – while possible, this needs to be done carefully. In contrast to 13CO, CS emission shows instead a ring morphology, most likely due to chemical effects. When imaged at high resolution, many protoplanetary discs show gaps and rings in their dust sub-mm continuum emission profile. These structures are widely considered to originate from local maxima in the gas pressure profile. The properties of the underlying gas structures are however unknown. In this paper, we present a method to measure the dust–gas coupling α/St and the width of the gas pressure bumps affecting the dust distribution, applying high-precision techniques to extract the gas rotation curve from emission line data cubes. As a proof of concept, we then apply the method to two discs with prominent substructure, HD 163296 and AS 209. We find that in all cases the gas structures are larger than in the dust, confirming that the rings are pressure traps. Although the grains are sufficiently decoupled from the gas to be radially concentrated, we find that the degree of coupling of the dust is relatively good (α/St ∼ 0.1). We can therefore reject scenarios in which the disc turbulence is very low and the dust has grown significantly. If we further assume that the dust grain sizes are set by turbulent fragmentation, we find high values of the α turbulent parameter (α ∼ 10−2). Alternatively, solutions with smaller turbulence are still compatible with our analysis if another process is limiting grain growth. For HD 163296, recent measurements of the disc mass suggest that this is the case if the grain size is 1 mm. Annular structures in protoplanetary discs, such as gaps and rings, are now ubiquitously found by high-resolution Atacama Large Millimetre Array observations. Under the hypothesis that they are opened by planets, in this paper we investigate how the minimum planet mass needed to open a gap varies across different stellar host masses and distances from the star. The dependence on the stellar host mass is particularly interesting because, at least in principle, gap opening around low-mass stars should be possible for lower mass planets, giving us a look into the young, low-mass planet population. Using dusty hydrodynamical simulations, we find however the opposite behaviour, as a result of the fact that discs around low-mass stars are geometrically thicker: gap opening around low-mass stars can require more massive planets. Depending on the theoretical isochrone employed to predict the relationship between stellar mass and luminosity, the gap opening planet mass could also be independent of stellar mass, but in no case we find that gap opening becomes easier around low-mass stars. This would lead to the expectation of a lower incidence of such structures in lower mass stars, since exoplanet surveys show that low-mass stars have a lower fraction of giant planets. More generally, our study enables future imaging observations as a function of stellar mass to be interpreted using information on the mass versus luminosity relations of the observed samples. A correlation between proto-planetary disc radii and sub-mm fluxes has been recently reported. In this letter, we show that the correlation is a sensitive probe of grain growth processes. Using models of grain growth and drift, we have shown in a companion paper that the observed disc radii trace where the dust grains are large enough to have a significant sub-mm opacity. We show that the observed correlation emerges naturally if the maximum grain size is set by radial drift, implying relatively low values of the viscous α parameter ≲0.001. In this case, the relation has an almost universal normalization, while if the grain size is set by fragmentation the flux at a given radius depends on the dust-to-gas ratio. We highlight two observational consequences of the fact that radial drift limits the grain size. The first is that the dust masses measured from the sub-mm could be overestimated by a factor of a few. The second is that the correlation should be present also at longer wavelengths (e.g. 3mm), with a normalization factor that scales as the square of the observing frequency as in the optically thick case. Recent observations show that rings and gaps are ubiquitous in protoplanetary discs. These features are often interpreted as being due to the presence of planets; however, the effect of planetary migration on the observed morphology has not been investigated hitherto. In this work, we investigate whether multiwavelength mm/submm observations can detect signatures of planet migration, using 2D dusty hydrodynamic simulations to model the structures generated by migrating planets and synthesizing ALMA continuum observations at |$\rm 850\, \hbox{$\mu $m}$| and |$\rm 3\, mm$|⁠. We identify three possible morphologies for a migrating planet: a slowly migrating planet is associated with a single ring outside the planet's orbit, a rapidly migrating planet is associated with a single ring inside the planet's orbit while a planet migrating at intermediate speed generates one ring on each side of the planet's orbit. We argue that multiwavelength data can distinguish multiple rings produced by a migrating planet from other scenarios for creating multiple rings, such as multiple planets or discs with low viscosity. The signature of migration is that the outer ring has a lower spectral index, due to larger dust grains being trapped there. Of the recent ALMA observations revealing protoplanetary discs with multiple rings and gaps, we suggest that Elias 24 is the best candidate for a planet migrating in the intermediate speed regime. We investigate the minimum planet mass that produces observable signatures in infrared scattered light and submillimetre (submm) continuum images and demonstrate how these images can be used to measure planet masses to within a factor of about 2. To this end, we perform multi-fluid gas and dust simulations of discs containing low-mass planets, generating simulated observations at 1.65, 10 and 850 μm. We show that the minimum planet mass that produces a detectable signature is ~15M⊕: this value is strongly dependent on disc temperature and changes slightly with wavelength (favouring the submm).We also confirm previous results that there is a minimum planet mass of ~20M⊕ that produces a pressure maximum in the disc: only planets above this threshold mass generate a dust trap that can eventually create a hole in the submm dust. Below this mass, planets produce annular enhancements in dust outwards of the planet and a reduction in the vicinity of the planet. These features are in steady state and can be understood in terms of variations in the dust radial velocity, imposed by the perturbed gas pressure radial profile, analogous to a traffic jam.We also show how planet masses can be derived from structure in scattered light and submm images. We emphasize that simulations with dust need to be run over thousands of planetary orbits so as to allow the gas profile to achieve a steady state and caution against the estimation of planet masses using gas-only simulations.
