Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) can host the moir\'{e} energy flat bands with two-fold degeneracy serving as a fruitful playground for strong correlations and topological phases. However, the number of degeneracy is not limited to two. Introducing a spatially alternative magnetic field, we report that the induced magnetic phase becomes an additional controllable parameter and leads to the emergence of four-fold degenerate flat bands. This emergence stems from the band inversion at $\Gamma$ point near the Fermi level with a variation of both twisted angle and magnetic phase. Using holomorphic functions, which explain the origin of the double flat bands in the conventional TBG, we can generate analytical wave functions in the magnetic TBG to show absolutely flat bands with four-fold degeneracy. In contrast, the conventional TBG has only two moir\'{e} energy flat bands, and the highly degenerate flat bands in this magnetic platform might bring richer correlation physics., Comment: 15 pages and 8 figures

The Nielsen-Ninomiya Theorem has set up a ground rule for the minimal number of the topological points in a Brillouin zone. Notably, in the 2D Brillouin zone, chiral symmetry and space-time inversion symmetry can properly define topological invariants as charges characterizing the stability of the nodal points so that the non-zero charges protect these points. Due to the charge neutralization, the Nielsen-Ninomiya Theorem requires at least two stable topological points in the entire Brillouin zone. However, additional crystalline symmetries might duplicate the points. In this regard, for the wallpaper groups with crystalline symmetries, the minimal number of the nodal points in the Brillouin zone might be more than two. In this work, we determine the minimal numbers of the nodal points for the wallpaper groups in chiral-symmetric and space-time-inversion-symmetric systems separately and provide examples for new topological materials, such as topological nodal time-reversal-symmetric superconductors and Dirac semimetals. This generalized Nielsen-Ninomiya Theorem serves as a guide to search for 2D topological nodal materials and new platforms for twistronics. Furthermore, we show the Nielsen-Ninomiya Theorem can be extended to 2D non-Hermitian systems hosting topologically protected exceptional points and Fermi points for the 17 wallpaper groups and use the violation of the theorem on the surface to classify 3D Hermitian and non-Hermitian topological bulks., Comment: Significant extensions in the second version. 39 pages, 21 figures, 7 tables, any comments are welcome

The surface of superconducting topological insulators (STIs) has been recognized as an effective $p\pm ip$ superconductivity platform for realizing elusive Majorana fermions. Chiral Majorana modes (CMMs), which are different from Majorana bound states localized at points, can be achieved readily in experiments by depositing a ferromagnetic overlayer on top of the STI surface. Here we simulate this heterostructure by employing a realistic tight-binding model and show that the CMM appears on the edge of the ferromagnetic islands only after the superconducting gap is inverted by the exchange coupling between the ferromagnet and the STI. In addition, multiple CMMs can be generated by tuning the chemical potential of the topological insulator. These results can be applied to both proximity-effect induced superconductivity in topological insulators and intrinsic STI compounds such as PbTaSe$_2$, BiPd and their chemical analogues, providing a route to engineering CMMs in those materials., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Systems of strongly interacting particles, fermions or bosons, can give rise to topological phases that are not acessible to non-interacting systems. Many such interaction-enabled topological phases have been discussed theoretically but few experimental realizations exists. Here we propose a new platform for interacting topological phases of fermions with time reversal symmetry $\bar T$ (such that $\bar T^2=1$) that can be realized in vortex lattices in the surface state of a topological insulator. The constituent particles are Majorana fermions bound to vortices and antivortices of such a lattice. We explain how the $\bar T$ symmetry arises and discuss ways in which interactions can be experimentally tuned and detected. We show how these features can be exploited to realize a class of interaction-enabled crystalline topological phases that have no analog in weakly interacting systems., 5 pages with 3 figures; v2 to appear in PRB/RC. We investigate states on the surface of strong and weak topological insulators and superconductors that have been gapped by a symmetry breaking term. The surface of a strong 3D topological insulator gapped by a magnetic material is well known to possess a half quantum Hall effect. Furthermore, it has been known that the surface of a weak 3D topological insulator gapped by a charge density wave exhibits a half quantum spin Hall effect. To generalize these results to all Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes of topological insulators and superconductors, we reproduce the classification table for the ten symmetry classes by using the representation theory of Clifford algebras and construct minimal-size Dirac Hamiltonians. We find that if the surface dimension and symmetry class possesses a $\mathbb{Z}$ or $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant, then the resulting surface state with a gapped symmetry breaking term may have a nontrivial topological phase., 19 pages
