The phenomenon of green contagion refers to the diffusion of sustainability practices across multi-tier supply chains. In this research, we propose a model of green contagion, theorising that both collaborative and coercive mechanisms play a role in the propagation of environmental sustainability across supply chains. Hypotheses are tested using a structural equation model with a multinational dataset of 616 manufacturing organisations reporting on their green practices, both internally within the firm and externally with suppliers and customers. From a theoretical perspective, the results lend support to the green contagion effect, with five out of the seven hypotheses being supported. The rejected hypotheses refer to a firm's internal adoption of green practices influencing green collaborative practices with suppliers, and a customer's use of coercive mechanisms towards a firm influencing the adoption of green collaborative practices between the firm and its suppliers. The findings have theoretical and practical implications for production research, as they highlight the challenges that organisations face when trying to influence green practices beyond tier 1 suppliers, and show that collaborative practices may prove more effective than coercive practices. This study examines the past, present, and future of Supply Chain Resilience (SCR) research in the context of COVID-19. Specifically, a total of 1717 papers in the SCR field are classified into 11 thematic clusters, which are subsequently verified by a supervised machine learning approach. Each cluster is then analyzed within the context of COVID-19, leading to the identification of three associated capabilities (i.e., interconnectedness, transformability, and sharing) on which firms should focus to build a more resilient supply chain in the post-COVID world. The derived insights offer invaluable guidance not only for practicing managers, but also for scholars as they design their future research projects related to SCR for greatest impact. Recent cybersecurity breaches have highlighted the resulting economic, political, and social effects. These incidents highlight that cybersecurity is now a supply chain issue. This should not be surprising given the interconnected digital world that defines organisational ecosystems. Due to their relative 'newness', coupled with the complexity of both supply chains and cybersecurity, there is lack of clarity and gaps in the current knowledge base regarding cybersecurity across the supply chain. At the same time, this issue is of critical importance to both practitioners and researchers, and thus needs to be structured in such a way to facilitate a common understanding of what cybersecurity across the supply chain cybersecurity entails and the subsequent research opportunities. Thus, the primary objective of this paper is to develop a research framework for cybersecurity across the supply chain to guide future research. An exploratory research methodology was applied, which relied on multiple sources to develop the research framework, including structured literature reviews, anecdotal evidence, interviews with subject matter experts, and external validation by both practitioners and researchers. Extending the notion that reshoring can have a significant impact on a firm's supply network owing to the associated location decisions, we explore how reshoring influences the resilience and sustainability of a focal firm's supply network. While reshoring is triggered by aspects related to both the home (domestic) and the host (foreign) country, frequently more favourable aspects in the home country lead to the reshoring decision. To investigate these dynamics, we construct two large‐scale networks consisting of 2066 and 1283 firms, respectively, capturing the supply networks of Apple and Jaguar Land Rover. Both networks have been experiencing the reshoring of previously foreign suppliers to domestic locations. Our investigation captures the network dynamics created by this relocation of tier 1 suppliers for the overall supply chain network, that is, also for higher‐tier/sub‐tier suppliers. The results reveal, contrary to our expectations, that indirect (sub‐tier) foreign suppliers positively influence the network's resilience, with this impact, however, being negatively moderated by their degree centrality, that is, the number of ties a node possesses. In addition, existing indirect (sub‐tier) domestic suppliers do not have a significant influence on the resilience of the network. No evidence was found for the impact of reshoring on sustainability. Blockchain technology is destined to revolutionise supply chain processes. At the same time, governmental and regulatory policies are forcing firms to adjust their supply chains in response to environmental concerns. The objective of this study is therefore to develop a distributed ledger-based blockchain approach for monitoring supply chain performance and optimising both emission levels and operational costs in a synchronised fashion, producing a better outcome for the supply chain. We propose the blockchain approach for different production allocation problems within a multi-echelon supply chain (MESC) under a carbon taxation policy. As such, we couple recent advances in digitalisation of operations with increasingly stringent regulatory environmental policies. Specifically, with lead time considerations under emission rate constraints (imposed by a carbon taxation policy), we simultaneously consider the production, distribution and inventory control decisions in a production allocation-based MESC problem. The problem is then formulated as a Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) model. We show that the distributed ledger-based blockchain approach minimises both total cost and carbon emissions. We then validate the feasibility of the proposed approach by comparing the results with a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). The year 2020 can be earmarked as the year of global supply chain disruption owing to the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19). It is however not only because of the pandemic that supply chain risk assessment (SCRA) has become more critical today than it has ever been. With the number of supply chain risks having increased significantly over the last decade, particularly during the last 5 years, there has been a flurry of literature on supply chain risk management (SCRM), illustrating the need for further classification so as to guide researchers to the most promising avenues and opportunities. We therefore conduct a bibliometric and network analysis of SCRA publications to identify research areas and underlying themes, leading to the identification of three major research clusters for which we provide interpretation and guidance for future work. In doing so we focus in particular on the variety of parameters, analytical approaches, and characteristics of multi-criteria decision-making techniques for assessing supply chain risks. This offers an invaluable synthesis of the SCRA literature, providing recommendations for future research opportunities. This article takes a public policy perspective and captures the implications of sectoral logistical capabilities for export competitiveness to obtain directives for developmental interventions in the logistics sector. We specifically develop a logistical policy intervention framework that links trade logistics performance and exports at the country-level with the objective to identify strategies for a nation's logistics policy formulation. Theoretically, the framework relies on the “macro-institutional view of the logistics systems environment,” which is an emerging global value chain perspective to model global trade scenarios. This perspective accounts for the influence of diverse operational capabilities at a sectoral scale, multiple institutions, and socio-economic environments in governing the performance of a nation's logistics systems in global trade. Methodologically, a rigorous nonlinear regression modeling approach highlights nonlinear discontinuities associated with the impact of logistical policy interventions fostering sectoral logistical capabilities (for example, developing logistics infrastructure or improving the state of logistics service quality in the nation) to boost the export viability of a country in the global economy. The results also highlight critical environmental bottlenecks that govern the efficacy of such interventions. This article pioneers to mainstream the public policy underpinning of logistics systems, and via this contextualization, it contributes to the agenda of mastering policy challenges in engineering and technology management. This article investigates the relationship between intellectual capital, supply chain learning, and supply chain adaptability. Specifically, relying on organizational learning theory, a research model is proposed linking intellectual capital (consisting of the trichotomy of human, organizational, and social capital), supply chain learning (consisting of supplier learning and customer learning) and supply chain adaptability. We scrutinize these relationships in two culturally-diverse contexts, China and USA, and develop hypotheses concerning the differences in the relative strengths of these relationships. Data from 300 Chinese and 229 USA manufacturers in high-tech industries are used to test these hypotheses. While the relationships are generally supported, especially insightful are the results where they differ between the two countries. While human capital is more important in influencing organizational capital in USA, social capital is more important in China. Social capital also plays a more significant role in influencing customer learning in China, while no statistical differences are detected in social capital's influence on supplier learning across the two countries. The divergence observed can be explained by the cultural differences between the two countries. Implications are provided for managers in both countries to improve supply chain adaptability. Buyer–supplier (B–S) relationships are dynamic. Nevertheless, research on external supply chain integration (SCI) has largely adopted a static‐snapshot perspective and has failed to grasp SCI's dynamic reality. The scant research devoted to SCI's dynamic perspectives suggests that the strength and scope of ties between buyers and suppliers differ based on integration levels. However, ambiguity persists regarding the relational behaviors exhibited across integration levels, as well as the stimulants that motivate firms to evolve their relationships. With buyers increasingly relying upon suppliers (and vice‐versa) and compounded by the knowledge that nearly half of SCI initiatives end up as failures, the need for a holistic framework that takes into account the underlying dynamics of relational behaviors and stimulants cannot be overstated. Using a mixed‐methods approach, six relational behaviors that differ in their saliency across SCI levels are identified, and eight stimulants that motivate B–S relationships to evolve are extracted. Specifically, we note that once a stimulant is activated, it remains influential across SCI levels, though its potency may vary. Our research significantly extends the contemporary understanding of SCI by (i) providing a holistic framework to comprehend SCI from a behavioral perspective, and (ii) noting that the highest integration levels do not necessarily typify successful B–S relationships. In doing so, we combine an evolutionary perspective with a relationship portfolio perspective for examining B–S relationship dynamics, thereby offering a comprehensive view to yield finer‐grained insights into B–S relationship dynamics. Leveraging the strengths of a firm’s supply chain partners for new product development (NPD) has become essential to satisfy rapidly changing customer demands and to remain competitive. Firms are, therefore, aiming to further their NPD competence, which we define as the ability of the supply chain to improve and generate new products and services, based on the processes and relationships established with suppliers and customers. This study examines how intangible capital and knowledge further the development of NPD competence within the context of a supply chain. A theoretical model, based upon resource-advantage theory, is tested via structural equation modelling utilising survey data collected from 195 small- and medium-sized enterprises in the manufacturing industry reporting on their primary supply chain. Our findings indicate that more easily transferable capital manifests itself in explicit knowledge and less easily transferable capital manifests itself in tacit knowledge. We further identify complementarities of the two types of intangible capital as influencing knowledge type development. More importantly, we find that the two types of knowledge differ in their ability to influence NPD competence in the supply chain, and that these links are moderated by relationship length. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate to what extent dynamic capabilities (DCs) developed in the field of green supply chain management can foster social supply chain performance. In addition, the role of both human and stakeholder capital in enhancing this relationship is investigated. Design/methodology/approach: Relying on the theoretical framework of the resource-based view, complemented with the DCs perspective, the authors hypothesize about the benefits of a firm's environmental management capability for its social supply chain performance, as well as the moderating role of both human and stakeholder capital. Our contentions are tested through a multi-year database of socially responsible investments covering 1,177 multinational corporations. Findings: The findings show that companies can sustain positive and superior social performance in their supply chain by leveraging DCs developed in the environmental field. This impact is further shown to be elevated in the presence of both human and stakeholder capital. Research limitations/implications: This study represents a snapshot of the transformation process from environmentally to socially responsible supply chains. While the secondary data employed offers unique advantages, secondary data also have limitations. Social implications: Developing environmental capabilities not only enhances companies' profitability, but can also lead to better supply chains through improved labor conditions and well-being. Originality/value: The authors' shift from a company-centric to a sustainability-centric conceptualization of DCs can open up new opportunities to engage research, potentially leading to high-impact results in the field of sustainable supply chain management. Outsourcing has become a necessity for most companies in today's competitive environment, which is also evidenced by a growing interest by academics worldwide. However, to date very few multi-country studies exist that compare and contrast outsourcing decisions and practices by organisations in different countries. The present research aims to contribute to this area by reporting and analysing results from a survey conducted in 15 countries. Using a total dataset of 806 responses, empirical exploratory insights are reported on the evolving approaches and concepts of outsourcing decision-making in different countries. More specifically, this study provides characteristics of the most important suppliers to respondents across the 15 nations, and explores rationales for outsourcing, highlighting country-specific similarities and differences. In addition, using transaction cost economics (TCE), four hypotheses are developed and tested, linking contract specificity, purchase risk, supplier responsiveness, and procedural rigour to purchase performance within an outsourcing context. This article scrutinizes the link between supplier leveraging and product innovation performance with the contingency of intellectual capital. Supplier leveraging refers to the utilization of knowledge obtained from suppliers for the benefit of the firm and product innovation performance to the firm's ability to introduce new and radically different products. Intellectual capital is represented by the trichotomy of structural, human, and social capital. Applying the knowledge-based view, a positive moderation effect emanating from structural and human capital is hypothesized, with however a negative moderation effect emanating from social capital. The expectation for the positive moderation is grounded in the enabling knowledge processing capabilities of structural and human capital, enhancing the effectiveness of supplier leveraging for the generation of product innovation performance. The negative moderation of social capital is suggested due to it likely limiting the transferability and aggregation capacity for knowledge, in addition to also potentially questioning the legitimacy of the suppliers' information, and thus making knowledge leveraged from suppliers less effective in informing product innovation performance. Data collected from 576 manufacturing firms confirm these hypotheses. Overall, by considering the interplay between supplier leveraging and intellectual capital, and its effect on product innovation performance, this study offers important new insight on the dynamics governing product innovations within supply chains. While the literature on supply chain integration (SCI) is proliferating, the link between SCI and a firm's contract manufacturing performance has not been investigated yet. To fill this gap in the literature, we investigate the effects of supply chain integration on contract manufacturing efficiency using the objective measure of return on contract manufacturing. Unlike prior studies, this research uses finer‐grained dimensions of SCI by not only differentiating between customer and supplier integration but also by separating integration activities depending on their purpose for either product development or process improvement, thus enhancing our understanding of the underlying theoretical dynamics by disentangling each dimension's respective contribution to a firm's contract manufacturing efficiency. Using archival survey data from 322 manufacturing firms collected by the Korea Productivity Center, we demonstrate that integration activities with customers and suppliers, depending on whether they focus on products or processes, generate contradicting outcomes in terms of return on contract manufacturing, thereby challenging the implicit assumption about the equivocal benefits of SCI across manufacturing systems. Furthermore, our findings substantiate the positive moderating effects of cross‐functional integration on the external integration–performance links by demonstrating the amplified effects, either positive or negative, of integration on return on contract manufacturing. ABSTRACT Many new product introductions continue to be unsuccessful, and while researchers have studied product development processes, relatively few studies directly address new product launch. We do so in the present research and posit that supply chain intelligence, defined as technological and competitive knowledge sourced and integrated from suppliers, customers, and competitors, plays an important role in explaining new product launch success. We further employ the knowledge-based view to theorize that both supply chain adaptability and product innovation capability act as important mediators of the effects of supply chain intelligence on new product launch success and firm financial performance. While the former capability refers to a firm's ability to quickly adjust its supply chain to react to market and product design changes, the latter refers to the firm's proficiency in developing innovative new products. We test hypothesized relationships among these factors utilizing data collected in a survey of 229 U.S. manufacturing firms. Results point to the central role of supply chain adaptability in capturing the benefits of supplier technological intelligence for enhanced product innovation capability, new product launch success, and firm financial performance. In contrast, product innovation capability serves as the generative means by which customer and competitor intelligence is translated into more successful new product launches, which, in turn, produce superior firm financial performance. Overall, these findings contribute to a better understanding of factors that can explain why certain product launches are more successful than others, and offer practical insights for appropriate investments in the development of related knowledge resources. While supplier development has become a prominent strategy, it has also been shown to not always be successful. We take a contingency perspective in the present research to investigate why this may be the case. Unlike most prior studies, we examine the issue from the viewpoint of the supplier as the recipient of buyer-driven knowledge transfer, and assess factors that may attenuate or hamper its effect on the supplier's operational performance. We suggest, basing our arguments on the theoretical framework of motivation- opportunity-ability (MOA), that while buyer-driven knowledge transfer activities provide an opportunity for enhancing the supplier's operational performance, the degree to which this opportunity is realized depends upon both the relative absorptive capacity (ability), as well as the supplier's trust in the buyer, and the supplier's innovativeness (motivation). Specifically, we theorize that the supplier's perceived overlapping knowledge and its perceived cognitive congruence with the buyer (reflective of the supplier's relative absorptive capacity) and the supplier's trust in the buyer serve as positive moderators, and the supplier's own innovativeness as a negative moderator. We assess these hypotheses within a unique context, namely that of small- and medium-sized suppliers of large South Korean conglomerates (so-called chaebols), using hierarchical linear modeling. Our findings extend the academic literature in supplier development by providing insight into important contingencies influencing the effectiveness of buyer-driven knowledge transfer activities for improved operational performance of suppliers, based on the MOA framework, and offer valuable lessons for practitioners in crafting more effective supplier development strategies. ABSTRACT Service-learning (SL) is a pedagogical approach in which students are assigned a course-related project in a not-for-profit organization, and are tasked to apply course content to execute the project. While the benefits are multifarious, only recently have supply chain management (SCM) courses adapted this innovative teaching methodology. The present article aims to popularize this pedagogical concept by providing a detailed overview of the background, development, implementation, and success of an SL project in an undergraduate SCM course; this serves as a 'how to' guide for instructors interested in implementing the approach. Compelling evidence for the value of SL is provided by data assessing the students' learning experiences, and benefits for participating organizations are demonstrated. ABSTRACT Competitive capabilities have been defined as a plant's actual performance relative to its competitors, with the most commonly investigated capabilities being quality, delivery, flexibility, and cost. However, most research in this realm has investigated capabilities within developed countries, and neglected the context of developing and emerging nations, which are increasingly becoming viable economic entities in global supply chains in their own right. The present study fills this gap and carries out a comparative analysis of competitive capabilities among plants in developing, emerging, and industrialized countries. Basing our arguments on the resource-based view of the firm, we suggest that the influence of competitive capabilities on each other varies among plants in differentially industrialized regions. Specifically, we suggest that, on average, competitive capabilities tend to influence each other to a greater degree in plants in emerging and developing countries compared to industrialized countries. Along similar lines, we suggest that the influence of the four competitive capabilities on performance improvement is manifested more strongly among plants in emerging and developing countries than among plants in industrialized nations. We investigate these contentions with data from 1,211 plants in 21 countries. The results are particularly important for decision makers as they decide on the increasingly global location of their manufacturing operations or the configuration of their global supply chains. Purpose - To investigate the diffusion of online reverse auctions by exploring differences between their early, late and lagging adopters. More specifically, adopter categories are compared against organizational characteristics and auction behavior as a result of learning. Organizational characteristics include number of employees and purchasing authority structure (PAS). Differences in learning are investigated by behavioral manifestations, consisting of the savings achieved, as well as the use of bundles in reverse auctions. Design/methodology/approach - Four hypotheses were developed based on academic and trade literature. Data were collected with a large-scale online survey among members of the Institute for Supply Management, receiving 363 complete and useable responses. Records were split into three adopter categories based on whether the respondent's firm adopted reverse auctions early (before April 2002) or late (after April 2002), or whether the adoption was merely planned. Differences related to the time of adoption were explored via nonparametric x² contingency table analyses. The x² statistic was and to determine whether a hypothesis is supported or rejected. Findings - Adopter categories differ in regards to number of employees, the savings achieved, and their use of bundles. No differences were detected in terms of PAS. Explanations for these findings are provided. Practical implications - The results support the diffusion of online reverse auctions, provide encouragement for their adoption especially also by smaller firms, and suggest that late adopters are not disadvantaged when compared to their early-adopting counterparts. Originality/value - No published studies have investigated the diffusion of online reverse auctions for business-to-business procurement, or explored potential differences between early adopters, late adopters and laggards. • The role of operations and SCM in managing epidemics and pandemics is reviewed. • Five research areas are identified, providing an integrative view of the field. • Ten future research directions are developed. • A starting point for researchers to investigate this domain is provided. Epidemics have been posing significant challenges to health, existence, and continuity. From the emergence of an outbreak to its elimination, managing an epidemic/pandemic entails many operations and supply chain management decisions that can contribute to a lessening of its impact. With these decisions, epidemic-/pandemic-imposed challenges related to forecasting, planning, supply, manufacturing, storage, and transportation can be addressed in an effort to curtail and end the epidemic/pandemic. We have witnessed these disruptions first-hand during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had a destructive effect on many well-established supply chains, threatening the existence of firms. The role of operations and supply chain management is thus pivotal for navigating epidemics/pandemics. Against this background, we present a systematic literature review on the role of operations and supply chain management during epidemics and pandemics, illustrating its potential and calling for future research. Leveraging bibliographic coupling analysis, we identify major research areas and contributions that serve as a foundation to propel these domains forward. We further critically review these research areas, identifying multiple themes of which many have been perennially relevant, while others have come to the fore only recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our review provides an integrative view of the field, concurrently advancing theory, and offering ten distinct future research directions.
