The article discusses research on the role of delinquent mortgages and neglected swimming pools in the outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in Kern County, California in June 2007. It references a study by W. Reisen et al published in a 2008 issue of the periodical "Emerging Infectious Diseases." The 140 human cases of WNV was preceded by a significant increase in WNV infection in birds in the area. It was found that at least 17% of 42 polls in the immediate Bakersfield area were green.
