Abstract: Finite element method is used to analyze a rail with a vertical bottom up crack at its foot, under the axle load and surface traction of a wheel. The possibility of crack formation at the foot of the rail in the neighborhood of a welding connection is discussed. A brief review on the importance of T‐stress in brittle fracture is presented. Seven cases with different locations of the crack relative to rail's sleeper contact region are considered. Numerous positions of the wheel are considered, and in each case, 3 crack parameters KI, KII, and T‐stress are calculated. Then, the biaxiality ratio and the mixity parameter for each loading and crack condition are calculated. It is shown that the location of crack and wheel can create mixed mode loading in the cracked rail and that the magnitude of crack tip parameters are strongly dependent on these geometric variables. In particular, the magnitudes of T‐stress and biaxiality ratio are significant in some cases. The effect of friction between the crack faces in the presence of compressive mode I loading on the mode II stress intensity factor is studied. Under mixed mode loading, due to the axle load and surface traction, the most critical condition is the formation of vertical cracks near the sleeper contact region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The values of mode II fracture toughness reported in the literature for several rocks are studied theoretically by using a modified criterion based on strain energy density averaged over a control volume around the crack tip. The modified criterion takes into account the effect of T-stress in addition to the singular terms of stresses/strains. The experimental results are related to mode II fracture tests performed on the semicircular bend and Brazilian disk specimens. There are good agreements between theoretical predictions using the generalized averaged strain energy density criterion and the experimental results. The theoretical results reveal that the value of mode II fracture toughness is affected by the size of control volume around the crack tip and also the magnitude and sign of T-stress. In stress analysis of cracked plates, alongside the stress intensity factor which quantifies the singular stress component perpendicular to the crack plane, the role played in crack growth by the constant term parallel to the crack plane, called the T-stress, has been widely investigated by many researchers. There are, however, cases of practical interest where the influence on the stress field of the higher order terms in the series expansion for the crack tip stress field, is not negligible. The main aim of the present investigation is to present and apply a set of equations able to describe more accurately the stress components for those cases where the mode I and mode II stress intensity factors used in combination with the T-stress are unable to characterise with sufficient precision the complete stress field ahead the crack tip. The starting point is represented by the Williams' solution (Williams, 1957) where stresses as expressed in terms of a power series. An example is investigated of a thin-thickness welded lap joint characterized by various joint width to thickness ratios, in the range of d/t ranging from 0.5 to 5. The present paper indicates that the local stresses as well as the strain energy averaged over a control volume which embraces the slip tip, can be evaluated with satisfactory precision only by taking into account a further four terms besides KI, KII and T-stress. In the traditional formulation of the stress field near a crack tip, the presence of the T-stress is generally considered only under mode I or mixed mode I and II conditions. In this paper its presence in almost pure Mode II is experimentally investigated by mean of photoelasticity and its effects on the isochromatic fringe patterns are discussed. The test specimens are Brazilian discs containing sharp central cracks. After crack generation, all residual stresses are removed with thermal treatment of the specimens. Then, a compressive load is applied in a specific angle to induce mode II deformation. The observed isochromatic fringes show very good consistency with theoretical predictions. Experimental results indicate that this specimen has a negative T-stress in mode II condition. An over-deterministic method has been employed for calculating the stress intensity factors (SIFs) as well as the coefficients of the higher-order terms in the Williams series expansions in cracked bodies, using the conventional finite element analysis. For a large number of nodes around the crack tip, an over-determined set of simultaneous linear equations is obtained, and using the fundamental concepts of the least-squares method, the coefficients of the Williams expansion can be calculated for pure mode I, pure mode II and mixed mode I/II conditions. A convergence study has been conducted to examine the effects of the number of nodes used, the number of terms in Williams expansion and the distance of the selected nodes from the crack tip, on the accuracy of the results. It is shown that the simple method presented in this paper, yields accurate results even for coarse finite element meshes or in the absence of singular elements. The accuracy of SIFs and the coefficients of higher-order terms are validated by using the available results in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
