1. Examining the Usability of Touch Screen Gestures for Children With Down Syndrome.

Abstract

The use of multi-touch devices for all types of users (from children to the elderly) has grown considerably in the recent years. However, despite the huge interest in this technology there is a lack of research addressing usability studies on children with Down's Syndrome. This article evaluates the abilities of these children (aged from 5 to 10 years) when performing a basic set of multi-touch gestures (tap, double tap, long press, drag, scale up and down, rotation) in tablet devices. The results show that regardless of their more limited motor skills, DS children are able to perform most of the evaluated multi-touch gestures with success rates close to 100% and that this technology could be fully exploited for developing applications targeted specifically at this type of user. Abstract

Smart phones and tablet computers have flooded the world. With their seemingly intuitive multi-touch interface, they seem to be a step towards embodied interaction. But are they really? In this paper we take off with an analysis of these products and our interaction with them from the perspective of dematerialization. We claim that the multi-touch display is the outcome of a dematerialization process. As it is applied today, it fails to fulfil the promise of embodied interaction, since it results in an impoverished, standardized and computer-like interaction. Next, we introduce our own design perspective, the third stand, which aims to consciously guide dematerialization instead of blindly applying it. We believe this perspective leads to a fresh way of thinking about the multi-touch display. By presenting the design of a novel alarm clock, we emphasize the single-purpose character of the third stand and reveal its own specific nature. Next, in two design projects, we confront the third stand with the multi-touch display and enhance the latter with specific, meaningful and rich actions. Abstract

This paper discusses the implementation of a case study on capacitive touch technology for a child's knowledge, skills and interaction. The case study was done with 20 children aged 8 years old in the Games Lab at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. The objectives were (1) to identify children's knowledge about the capacitive touch technology; (2) to identify the skills (a child's sense and movement) in handling the capacitive touch technology; and (3) to identify the interaction involved between a child and the touch screen technology. For the case study, 20 iPad tablets from Apple were used. Four different types of games (with education and fun elements) were selected and played by these children. 20 research facilitators were involved in helping the researchers with every aspect of the case study, such as taking notes (for any affect expression such as vocal, facial and gestural behavior) and recording video. To facilitate the case study, an instrument was designed and used for the observation together with video records as references and additional evidence to be used in analyzing data. Findings show that (1) children have different information and understanding of the capacitive touch technology based on their experience; (2) children have different basic movements of finger when handling the capacitive touch technology; and (3) there are a significant differences and similarities in how children interact with the capacitive touch technology. Abstract

Touchscreen-based devices such as smartphones and tablets are gaining popularity, but their rich input capabilities pose new development and testing complications. To alleviate this problem, we present an approach and tool named RERAN that permits record-and-replay for the Android smartphone platform. Existing GUI-level record-and-replay approaches are inadequate due to the expressiveness of the smartphone domain, in which applications support sophisticated GUI gestures, depend on inputs from a variety of sensors on the device, and have precise timing requirements among the various input events. We address these challenges by directly capturing the low-level event stream on the phone, which includes both GUI events and sensor events, and replaying it with microsecond accuracy. Moreover, RERAN does not require access to app source code, perform any app rewriting, or perform any modifications to the virtual machine or Android platform. We demonstrate RERAN's applicability in a variety of scenarios, including (a) replaying 86 out of the Top-100 Android apps on Google Play; (b) reproducing bugs in popular apps, e.g., Firefox, Facebook, Quickoffice; and (c) fast-forwarding executions.
