A personal narrative is presented which explores the author's experience of being wrote a column about re-examining the Australian tax base to ensure that Australia would have a strong tax system in the future, and had no idea what challenges 2020 would bring.

The article offers information on need to look at trade-offs discussed at Tax Institute's recent federal Budget 2020-21 submission. Topics discussed include information on needs for government to look at where trade-offs in the Australian tax base to ensure that Australia has the requisite tax system; Australia's current tax mix which Australia's current tax mix which relies heavily on income tax bases; and need for single corporate tax rate in Australia.
