Extended exposure to seawater results in the erosion of the structural high-strength steels utilized in marine equipment, primarily due to the infiltration of hydrogen. Consequently, this erosion leads to a decrease in the mechanical properties of the material. In this investigation, the mechanical responses of Q690 structural high-strength steel specimens were investigated by considering various hydrogen charging parameters, such as the current density, charging duration, and solution concentration values. The findings highlighted the significant impacts of electrochemical hydrogen charging parameters on the mechanical behaviors of Q690 steel samples. Specifically, a linear relationship was observed between the mechanical properties and the hydrogen charging current densities, while the associations with the charging duration and solution concentration were nonlinear. Additionally, the fracture morphology under various hydrogen charging parameters was analyzed and discussed. The results demonstrate that the mechanical properties of the material degrade with increasing hydrogen charging parameters, with tensile strength and yield stress decreasing by approximately 2–4%, and elongation after fracture reducing by about 20%. The findings also reveal that macroscopic fractures exhibit significant necking in uncharged conditions. As hydrogen charging parameters increase, macroscopic necking gradually diminishes, the number of microscopic dimples decreases, and the material ultimately transitions to a fully brittle fracture.

Exposure to mechanical stimuli such as pressure and stretching prompts the skin to undergo physiological adaptations to accommodate and distribute applied forces, a process known as mechanotransduction. Mechanotherapy, which leverages mechanotransduction, shows significant promise across various medical disciplines. Traditional methods, such as massage and compression therapy, effectively promote skin healing by utilizing this mechanism, although they require direct skin contact. This study introduces a novel contactless modality, Shear Wave Stimulation (SWS), and evaluates its efficacy compared to traditional massage in eliciting responses from human skin and fascia. Fifteen healthy volunteers received SWS, while another fifteen volunteers received massage. Tests of skin mechanical properties revealed significant enhancements in skin shear modulus for both methods, showing an increase of approximately 20%. Additionally, deformation analysis of ultrasound images showed distinct responses of the skin and fascia to the two stimuli. SWS induced extension in the dermis (∼18%), hypodermis (∼16%), and fascia (∼22%) along the X and Y axes. In contrast, massage compressed the skin layers, reducing the dermis by around 15% and the hypodermis by about 8%, while simultaneously stretching the superficial fascia by approximately 8%. The observed extension across the entire skin with SWS highlights its potential as a groundbreaking contactless approach for promoting skin healing. Furthermore, the differing responses in blood flow reaffirm the distinct stimulation modes of SWS and massage. These findings establish a foundation for future innovative skin therapy modalities.

In this study, two types of porous Cf/Cm composites were obtained by introducing pyrolytic carbon (PyC) and pyrolytic carbon/furan resin carbon (PyC/FRC). Subsequently, Cf/Cm-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites with different carbon matrices were prepared by introducing SiC and (ZrxHf1−x)C matrices into the porous Cf/Cm composites via the reactive melt infiltration method, specifically termed as Cf/PyC-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C and Cf/PyC/FRC-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites. The microstructures of the porous Cf/Cm and Cf/Cm-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites with different carbon matrices were examined, and a comprehensive analysis was conducted on microstructural evolution and mechanical behaviors of the Cf/Cm-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites. The results indicate that both Cf/Cm-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites underwent similar microstructural evolution processes, differing only in terms of evolution kinetics and final microstructure. Differences in the pore structures of porous Cf/Cm composites, as well as in the reactivities of carbon matrices, were identified as primary influencing factors. Additionally, both Cf/Cm-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites exhibited “pseudo-ductile” fracture characteristics, with flexural strengths of 214.1 ± 8.8 MPa and 149.6 ± 12.2 MPa, respectively. In the Cf/PyC-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composite, crack initiation during loading primarily originated from the ceramic matrix, while in the Cf/PyC/FRC-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composite, failure initially arose from the residual FRC matrix. Excessive fiber corrosion and the presence of residual low-modulus FRC matrix resulted in lower mechanical performance.

Natural resources have been excessively consumed, and large amounts of construction wastes have been generated, owing to the fast development of civil industry, causing crucial environmental issues. Therefore, reusable construction waste fabricated into recycled concrete offers a good strategy to solve this issue. Thus, this article first develops thin-walled steel tubes stub columns filled with self-compacting concrete containing recycled coarse aggregate. Afterwards, the compressive behaviors of the columns when undergoing axial compression loading to failure are explored. Subsequently, the effect of types of self-compacting concrete and wall thickness on failure modes and the relationships between load and displacement/strain is discussed comprehensively. Moreover, models of load–displacement/strain behaviors are proposed. The results show that columns with identical wall thicknesses containing both natural and recycled coarse aggregate display similar failure modes, mainly presenting as local buckling and rupture. The shape of the load–displacement/strain curves for identical wall thicknesses are almost the same. Nevertheless, the maximum load and stiffness of columns containing recycled coarse aggregate are lower than those of columns containing natural coarse aggregate. Additionally, the maximum loads corresponding to wall thickness of 1.2 mm and 3.0 mm are decreased by 18.4% and 5.8%, respectively. Moreover, the proposed models can reasonably evaluate the relationships between load and displacement/strain. This paper demonstrates that thin-walled steel tubular columns containing recycled coarse aggregate present positive compressive behaviors and thus exhibit great potential for developing environmentally friendly and sustainable civil infrastructures.

This paper experimentally studied the influence of the notch shape and size on the damage evolution and failure strength (tension and torsion) of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix (CFRP) laminates. Hashin’s damage criteria were utilized to monitor the evolution of multi-damage modes, and FEM simulations were also performed by using the ABAQUS code to clarify the specific damage modes in detail as an instructive complement. The failure characteristics of all the notched samples were analyzed and compared with those without notches. The measured results presented that the existence of a variety of notches significantly impaired the load carrying capacity of CFRP laminates. The tensile strengths of C-notch and U-notch increase with an increasing notch radius, while the ultimate torques of C-notch and V-notch decrease with an increasing notch size and angle. The variation in notched properties was explained by different notch shapes and sizes, and the failure characteristics were also presented and compared among notched CFRP laminates with varied notches.

There have been strong interests in achieving unconventional mechanical properties of materials utilized for various applications in recent years. Apart from the well known composite material approach, an innovative approach of employing cellular structure or repeated geometric pattern has been of great interest. The simple example that has been proved useful and promising is the monoholar pattern. Experimental investigations of monoholar rubber flat slab have demonstrated a number of unusual mechanical behaviors under compression loading unable to achieve before. It is thus enticing to find out if the same is possible under tension loading. This research therefore embarks on applying tension load on a thin monoholar rubber flat slab, 1/10 as thick as the flat slab tested under compression loading. Results of the experiments clearly demonstrate similar behaviors as observed in the case of compression loading. However stress plateau is not observable in the stress-strain curve obtained under tension loading. This is because the test specimen reaches rupture point after undergoing a certain level of stress. Ligament thickness has been observed to effect noticeable drop in stress level before gradually increasing towards stress level that causes full blown rupture. This may lead to some promising applications related to tension loading.

Functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) is a novel nanomaterial; the mechanical behavior of FG-CNRC has become a hot topic in the Materials Science and Engineering Science recently, thanks to its excellent mechanical and electrical properties after its fusion with matrix. In this paper, the review efforts for research progress on the modeling and analysis of FG-CNTRC structures are carried out. Firstly, the development background of FG-CNRC is presented, as well as some basic theories and main equations for mechanical analysis of FG-CNTRC structure. Then, the mechanical behaviors of FG-CNTRC beams, plates, and shells under loading conditions are comprehensively reviewed, with the emphasis on discussing the bending, buckling, and vibration behaviors of the structures. Finally, the future research orientation of the field is considered and prospected.

This study will investigate the effect of non-woven PET plastic tissue on the fresh, physical, mechanical, acoustic, thermal, and microstructural behaviors of concrete. Including reference specimens, non-woven fabrics were considered in two ways: (a) as a layer with four various configurations of 1-layer, 2-sides, 3-sides, and full wrapping (4-sides) to strengthen specimens, and (b) as (10 × 10) mm cut pieces with three different incorporated percentages of 0.25%, 0.50%, and 0.75%. Based on the experimental results, mechanical properties (compressive, split tensile, and flexural strengths) were remarkably improved by applying non-woven sheets as a layer. For instance, the cylindrical compressive and split tensile strengths were improved by 13.40% and 15.12% for the strengthened specimens compared to the reference specimens, respectively. Moreover, control specimens were damaged to many fragments after mechanical testing, but the samples strengthened by such fabrics or containing cut pieces were maintained and not separated into many small parts. The acoustic behavior and thermal conductivity declined by 9.83% and 19.67% with the attachment of tissue on one side and 2-sides, respectively. Acoustic behaviors decreased by 10.0%, 17.60%, and 26.30% and thermal conductivity decreased by 6.60%, 12.10%, and 15.50%, with the incorporation of 0.25%, 0.50%, and 0.75% of cut pieces, respectively. Finally, it was discovered that non-woven tissue is advised to enhance particular properties of concrete.

This article investigates and presents a case study on the Beijing Subway Line 12 excavation beneath the existing Qinghuayuan Tunnel. The composite pre-reinforcement technique was used in conjunction with the shallow tunneling method to control the distortion of the existing large-diameter tunnel. When building twin tunnels underneath, this strategy considerably decreased the impact on the existing large-diameter tunnel. To systematically study the mechanical response of the existing large-diameter tunnel, a variety of sensors was embedded in the prefabricated segments just above the new twin tunnels. During the undercrossing twin tunnels procedure, the earth pressure, tunnel crown settlement, opening width of the segment joint, and the circumferential strain of the large-diameter existing tunnel were all measured. The settlement development of the existing large-diameter tunnel was categorized under six stages: (1) sedimentation, (2) heave, (3) second sedimentation, (4) second heave, (5) third sedimentation, and (6) steady state. The joint opening of the existing large-diameter tunnel changed sharply during the new undercrossing twin tunnels. The earth pressure and concrete stress of the linings rapidly increased during the new undercrossing twin tunnels. The majority of the reinforcement and concrete stresses were compressive and far lower than the yield strength, indicating that the tunnel was in a safe working condition.

Bolted joints are commonly used for assembling carbon fiber/resin composite structures. Since drilling may generate defects at hole edges which affect mechanical properties, it is of great engineering significance to develop proper repair methods to restore the mechanical properties of the defective parts. However, there are few studies on hole edge defects and their repair methods. Therefore, a novelty short fiber filling repair method was proposed to repair defective holes in this study. The mechanical properties of intact, defective and repaired countersunk composite joints were compared and investigated. Experimental tensile tests showed that defective joints had lower initial stiffness and failure loads compared to intact joints, while the mechanical properties were effectively restored after repair. Three-dimensional finite element models were also established to analyze the damage process of the joints. Results of numerical modelling were consistent with the experimental results. The simulations showed that changes in contact behaviors and local deformations caused by hole edge defects led to the low initial stiffness and stiffness transition point of the joint, while this phenomenon was reduced after repair. Additionally, despite different joint types, laminate failure mainly occurred around the hole and countersink.

Phase separation phenomena in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted much attention since their discovery, but little attention has been given to the dynamics of the deformation mechanism of this kind of HEA during uniaxial tension, which limits their widespread and practical utility. In this work, molecular dynamics simulation was used to study the effect of phase separation on the mechanical properties of an HEA under uniaxial tensile loading. Moreover, the associated deformation behavior of the Co–Cr–Cu–Fe–Ni HEA was investigated at the nanoscale. Models with Cu-rich grain boundaries or grains were constructed. The results showed that Cu-rich grain boundaries or grains lowered the strength of the Co–Cr–Cu–Fe–Ni HEA, and Cu-rich grain boundaries significantly reduced ductility. This change of mechanical properties was closely associated with a deformation behavior. Furthermore, the deformation behavior was affected by the critical resolved shear stress of Cu-rich and Cu-depleted regions and the uneven stress distribution caused by phase separation. In addition, dislocation slipping and grain boundary sliding were the main mechanisms of plastic deformation in the Co–Cr–Cu–Fe–Ni HEA.

Pristine graphene is one of the strongest materials known in the world, and may play important roles in structural and functional materials. In order to utilize the extraordinary mechanical properties in practical engineering structures, graphene should be assembled into macroscopic structures such as graphene-based papers, fibers, foams, etc. However, the mechanical properties of graphene-based materials such as Young’s modulus and strength are 1–2 orders lower than those of pristine monolayer graphene. Many efforts have been made to unveil the multi-scale structure–property relations of graphene-based materials with hierarchical structures spanning the nanoscale to macroscale, and significant achievements have been obtained to improve the mechanical performance of graphene-based materials through composition and structure optimization across multi-scale. This review aims at summarizing the currently theoretical, simulation, and experimental efforts devoted to the multi-scale structure–property relation of graphene-based layer materials including defective monolayer graphene, nacre-like and laminar nanostructures of multilayer graphene, graphene-based papers, fibers, aerogels, and graphene/polymer composites. The mechanisms of mechanical property degradation across the multi-scale are discussed, based on which some multi-scale optimization strategies are presented to further improve the mechanical properties of graphene-based layer materials. We expect that this review can provide useful insights into the continuous improvement of mechanical properties of graphene-based layer materials.

Since the success of monolayer graphene exfoliation, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively studied due to their unique structures and unprecedented properties. Among these fascinating studies, the most predominant focus has been on their atomic structures, defects, and mechanical behaviors and properties, which serve as the basis for the practical applications of 2D materials. In this review, we first highlight the atomic structures of various 2D materials and the structural and energy features of some common defects. We then summarize the recent advances made in experimental, computational, and theoretical studies on the mechanical properties and behaviors of 2D materials. We mainly emphasized the underlying deformation and fracture mechanisms and the influences of various defects on mechanical behaviors and properties, which boost the emergence and development of topological design and defect engineering. We also further introduce the piezoelectric and flexoelectric behaviors of specific 2D materials to address the coupling between mechanical and electronic properties in 2D materials and the interactions between 2D crystals and substrates or between different 2D monolayers in heterostructures. Finally, we provide a perspective and outlook for future studies on the mechanical behaviors and properties of 2D materials.

3-D particle-based discrete element method (PB-DEM) was employed to numerically study the mechanical and progressive failure characteristics of pre-fissured marble specimens under conventional triaxial unloading conditions. The microscopic parameters of PB-DEM for marble materials were calibrated using comparison with the previous experimental data. To systematically investigate the mechanical properties and the progressive failure characteristics of pre-fissured marble specimens under the unloading conditions, a series of numerical specimens were simulated. The effects of fissure geometric conditions, initial confining pressures, and unloading rates on the mechanical and failure behaviors were explored via simulations. The present numerical results indicate that peak strength increased as the initial confining pressures increased or the unloading rate decreased. Crack coalescence types and the ultimate failure modes in the pre-fissured marble specimens were significantly affected by the unloading stress paths. The present numerical results provide a better understanding of unloading mechanical and failure characteristics to scientists and engineers in rock mechanics and rock engineering.

As a novel energetic material with quite a high energy density, titanium hydride (TiH2) was introduced into a polytetrafluoroethylene/aluminum (PTFE/Al) reactive material system for the first time. The effects of TiH2 on the reaction energy, dynamic mechanical responses, and reaction properties of the composites were investigated through adiabatic bomb calorimeter, split-Hopkinson pressure bar, and drop-weight experiments. The results show that the reaction heat of the composites improved significantly as the content of TiH2 increased. Under dynamic compression, these composites show obvious strain hardening and strain rate hardening effects. Besides, a certain amount of TiH2 granules helps to improve the material’s compressive strength, and the maximum would even reach 173.2 MPa with 5% TiH2 percentage, 10.1% higher than that of PTFE/Al. Mesoscale images of the samples after dynamic compression indicate that interface debonding between the particles and PTFE matrix and the fracture of the PTFE matrix are the two major mechanisms resulting in the material’s failure. In addition, the drop-weight experiments indicate that the material’s impact sensitivities are sensitive to the content of TiH2, which would be increased to within 20% of the content of TiH2 compared with PTFE/Al, and the reaction degree is also improved to within 10% of the content of TiH2. The retrieved reaction residues after drop-weight experiments imply that the reaction is initiated at the edges of the samples, indicating a shear-induced initiation mechanism of this kind of reactive material.
