The 'basic design' course, which plays a key role in the process of creative thinking and converting thought into an idea in today's architecture and interior architecture departments, has been constructed on a new experimental learning method for this study. The study aimed to acquire a concrete space experience based on the assumed abstract thought, to produce a problem-solving-oriented design by making the student question the original design idea. The education method designed was accordingly carried out in 4 stages in 14 weeks in the 2021-2022 Education Period, Department of Interior Architecture, Selcuk University. For starters, theoretical information was conveyed with Gestalt principles; later abstract and concrete ideas were developed on the design problem, and in the third stage, projects were developed on the process of transition from abstract to concrete space for the solution of the problem, and finally, the results were evaluated. As a result of the studio experience, the students created a working doctrine that will direct the interior design studio works with the designed method, enable the formation of original forms and shapes, enabling them to obtain concrete space from abstract concepts, and design at different scales from equipment to space design.

- Abstract
One of the most important aims of art education is to improve the design skills of students. Besides the classical teaching methods, the design process can be enjoyable and active with different teaching methods. Listening to classical music activity can be used as one of these methods. The aim of this research is to reveal the effects of listening to classical music the design skills of 1st year students of Art Teaching Department. For this purpose, a total of 36 students were divided into two groups, experiment and control group unevenly. Classical Music pieces determined by the researchers were listened for 8 weeks in the experimental group and no music was played in the control group in Basic Design I Lesson. At the end of 8 weeks, students were asked to make unique designs in accordance with design principles. The classical music pieces was listened to the experimental group, and not listened to the control group. Two expert opinions were used in the determination and evaluation of the use of design principles for the designs obtained and the scope validity was provided. Mann Whitney U-test was used to determine the results in terms of group averages In the direction of the findings obtained; it was determined that the average of the design skill group of the students who participated in the classical music activity was not significantly higher than the students who did not participate in such activity. But; during the design, it was found that listening to classical music is effective in the use of 'rhythm' and 'balance' principle. it has been found that listening to classical music is not effective in the use of 'contrast', 'harmony', 'emphasis', 'proportion' and 'completeness' principles. In the light of the results of the research, it was determined that the listening to classical music during design was not effective in the use of all of the design principles. In this direction, it is recommended that this activity be performed with other musical genres. In addition, some information about classical music can be provided to students before the experiment and it can be done again. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Basic Design is a unique, essential and compulsory statement for all disciplines dealing with design. In this course, students learn basic concepts about their fields while they learn design elements and principles with applied studies. When design is considered as a kind of problem-solving action, Basic Design course teaches students to think creatively, which is the most basic tool of this action. Analyzing the truth and the given problem, conceptually dividing it into pieces, generating ideas and achieving a concrete creative result constitutes the content of the Basic Design course. Design educators need to produce information through original methods and share them with all design trainers. In this study, it is aimed to share creative designing method and learning effects that reach to creative concrete product. The process of reaching concrete spatial fiction from the abstract concepts of the Basic Design lesson given in the 1st class in Landscape Architecture education has been examined and the contribution of this process to education has been revealed. In the first phase of study in this context; In the Basic Design course of the Landscape Architecture Department of the Karadeniz Technical University, the students' semester and final studies are exemplified. In the second stage, a questionnaire study was carried out; It was researched how much educational and imaginative the students find this course. Thus, the process of the basic design course has been examined and the effects of creativity and learning have been tried to be determined. As a result, it was determined that the students considered the basic design process as a teaching and creative process. Also the study results showed that the students have developed their designers' identities in the course process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Art is a way of expressing individual feelings as well as thoughts in a sensory context and certain creative criteria are used today when producing artistic creation objects. With the acceptance of design being also a concept related to art, it may be possible to determine that the term is shaped by the criteria and methods related to art. Basic design elements such as point, line, color, texture, contrast, repetition, emphasis, balance, etc. concepts have demonstrated their presence in the field of visual art, ever since primitive examples until todays artistic productions. Therefore, implementations applied in line with these concepts, contribute to the progress of the artist and designer through a systematic approach. Just as in other fields of design, the studies in the field of textile surface design are not accidental, but are the results of a similar systematic application. Based on the criteria of basic design concepts regarding various applications, highly competent studies are put forward recently in the field of textile surface design. Basic design concepts play an important role in all design stages, beginning from the creation of textile surfaces, to the structure, color, pattern and other related details. The study based on an analysis model, relies on the research and review of relevant materials such as books, thesis, articles, etc. The research has been structuralized with the scope of providing an analysis of obtained data, conducted research and visual elements. The primary aim of the study is the association of basic design concepts within the field of textile surface design and providing an evaluation of the the visual impressions of selected textile products in order to reveal the effects of the abovementioned concepts related to the field.

Art education is a phenomenon that can facilitate the artistic development of individuals and societies in parallel with the developing era, technology, social and cultural differences. In the visual arts education, which is a significant part of art education, how the compositional components will be used as design elements depends on certain conditions. In plastic arts education, the methods and techniques used to meet these requirements are directly the subject of basic art education. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the Basic Art Education Course Curriculum in Fine Arts High Schools, which are among the schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education, in line with the opinions of the teachers of the fine arts high schools. The literature including art history in general and the progress of art education until the present was reviewed and investigated, thus a theoretical framework was established by combining the history of art education in the world and in our country. In this study conducted in the 2019-2020 academic year, 9th Grade Basic Art Education Curriculum of the Fine Arts High Schools, which was put into practice in 2015, was examined in line with the opinions of the relevant course teachers. The curricular shortcomings were investigated with quantitative research methods in order to make suggestions in terms of efficiency for students, the comprehensivity of the curriculum and its compatibility with the students’ level. The data collection tools were analyzed on SPSS software. t test, ANOVA, Mann Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis Test were performed to determine correlations between variables in the questionnaire forms used for teachers. The findings obtained from the data showed that most of the visual arts teachers found the content and general structure of the Basic Art Education Curriculum to be quite sufficient. Based on these data, it was concluded that the Basic Art Education Curriculum contributed positively to the instructional procedures and met the needs of the students in gaining basic knowledge about art education.

This research aims to explore the meaning of ‘texture’, as one of the basic design principles and elements, and the texture types. It also aims to investigate the paintings of some artists’ using natural - artificial textures, and to explain touch sensation. Texture-surface is tried to be explained on the basis of the definition of “sensation” of Worringer and Deleuze, emphasizing the relation of unit-whole by using the data obtained after the literature search. The natural-artificial, hard-soft surfaces and the general emotional effects created by the touch on the human are processed. In order to better understand the real texture, the work technique of Anselm Kiefer is examined. As for the artificial texture, the hyper-realist artist Ralph Goings and trompe l’oeil paintings, mosaics or digital textures are examined.

This Assessment is aiming to seek answer the question for “Can boundaries be liberating?” through the experience of Kırklareli University (KLU) Faculty of Architecture Integrated Basic Design Studio in order to assess how limitations and free thought affect each other. Distinct from classic term of basic design approach, program content of KLU Faculty of Architecture Integrated Basic Design Studio has enhanced to focus on territorial space, not only for to understand its physical components but its complex structure defined by social networks and flows. This unique design studio has been realized during 2014-2015 fall semester with participation of both urban planning and architectural design first year students to share their own experiences of place and different scale of problem solving approaches. It is being questioned how boundaries were considered in student works through the process of perception, comprehension and expression, according to KLU Basic Design Program aiming to reach common expression language. Also through this methodology positive and negative affects of limitations on creative production processes are being discussed. Despite the predefined limitations have brought certain amount of visual standardisation in material, texture and colour, development of distinctive and variant thoughts has been determined through basic design studies. During the design process territorial space understood as a whole with its structural aspects and further more combined with invisible social networks and flows. Individual and group works have been completed in the context of common pattern language that served as communication tool. As a result, positive affect of predefined limitations on achieving high abstraction level of creative design works have been determined.

En son bölümde ise temel tasarım dersinde biyotaklit tasarım yöntemlerinin uygulanabilirliği değerlendirilmiştir., Architecture emerged for the purpose of taking shelter, but in time became the subject matter of an academic discipline. Serving as an introduction to architecture, basic design training is the first step of architectural education which aims to develop the imagination and creativity of students. Whether intentional or not, humankind has appealed to nature for the process of creation and design in almost every aspect of life. Benyus calls this phenomenon "biomimicry" which means imitating the nature. Consequently, finding inspiration from nature was systematized and its application to design processes became easy. Several Turkish universities are known to offer courses on the application of natural themes in architectural basic design. Determination of the degree to which these applications possess elements of biomimicry design and the description of their scope is the purpose of this labor. In order to determine the role of biomimicry in basic design, this thesis defines the meaning and, the historical processes of basic design and the meaning of biomimicry. The basic design education in Turkey, and that at Maltepe University over the course of three years has been examined. Examination of nature inspired themes in basic design has revealed the steps involved in biomimicry systematic, and depict how and the extent to which these comprise basic design. Subsequently, several examples of nature inspired designs were examined to determine whether they constitute biomimcry and whether they were suited for use in basic design education. In the final chapter, the suitability of biomimcry design method as an approach for basic design education has been reviewed.

ness must be reduced into as much concreteness as possible to allow it to be controlled and dealt with. Many disciplines, under which design education is received, put effort into managing the process properly and improving it. Among many design disciplines interior architecture has been taking its place in educational institutions recent year at an increasing pace-especially the foundation universities of Turkey are providing an education with their quotas fulfilled intensively. Interior architecture education program aims to train individuals with the ability of creating innovative, dynamic, and original designs capable of more functional, wiser and aesthetical solutions for interior spaces. Began to blossom in the 19th century, the education was adopted as a teaching program in the 20thcentury thanks to the Bauhaus philosophy. The goal of the interior architecture design is not only to provide students with information but also teach them how to get to knowledge and how they can develop themselves. Among the primary goals of the design education are to make students begin to embrace such an understanding in their first year of education and to take advantage of the educational process to the highest possible extent. What is expected at the end of this one year educational process is to have had a beneficial design process rather than a good quality of product. Although this design education in the first year is named differently under various faculties, it is generally called “basic design education”. Basic design course given in the basic design education intends to increase the readiness level of students up to a certain point, help them recognize their personal traits, and oversee their judgements and get rid of their prejudices (Seylan, 2005). 1. The Goals of Basic Design Education and the Relation with Bauhaus Philosophy The basic design education is something more than a primarily art education. Because of this, from the first day on it is a tool for students to develop a base for understanding art first and creating artistic products. Here the goal is to make connections on the surface or in the space, between the ingredients – the material - and the thoughts and feelings by means of theories based on general perception (rhythm, direction, ratio, balance, etc.) (Gökaydın, 2002). Basic design education ought to be evaluated as an experimental process. The goal of the process is to gain the ability to reflect the products of perception and thought. Thus the more experiments-studies, the more and better the perceptions and expressions will be. The success to be gained here is parallel to the theoretical aesthetics education the student receives. Basic design education is the first step of the design education for design disciplines. The philosophy of education here needs a system which will define the theoretical and practical phases of the education. This system must be simple and have a perception oriented formula. The first school on art has founded in France in 1671 with the name of French Kingdom Academy. After the closure of this school in 1793, Ecole Des Beaux Arts has opened. Mentor system is valuable for this education program. Two dimensional and symmetric design approach is dominant. Also, it is known that studio system is planned to enhance communication between instructor and student. As a response to Beaux Arts, Bauhaus is revealed in Germany in 1919. Different from Beaux Arts, students are far from all the conditionings; creativeness, imagination and individual expression opportunity are supported by instructors (Ketizmen, 2002). Since the first half of 20th century, Gestalt theory took a part in design education and changed especially basic design education. In this theory perception is fundamental issue. Therefore, pureness and easiness is a must for perception in one of the rules of Gestalt called Pragnanz rule. With the help of Gestaltian approach, basic design education had to transform into intelligable and inclusive form. Cognitive processes are valuable than behavioral processes. Especially after the second world war, a different view reveals stating that designers must take a part in social and economical issues much more than in past. And a new education program Ulm, has founded in 1947 in Germany. Beaux Arts is a role model for this new program (Özalp, 2006). As seen, different education programmes are come up till today. Among these programmes, in Bauhaus, basic design is firstly accepted as a course in design education program. Besides being the birth of interior architecture education, Bauhaus is the period when the basic design creed/teaching was discovered. According to this teaching, all design based disciplines (industrial design, architecture, interior architecture, sculpting, painting, etc.) need a thorough educational experience in “basic design concepts-their relations” both theoretically and practically. For Bauhaus, calling for an inter occupational study, these experiences should be accumulated in a common pool belonging the all of the disciplines. Aiming to receive education in design and stepping on to the basic design studio, the student faces a different kind of education system when compared with the previous terms. Previously, in a theoretical education system the students learned the information through memorising. This information whose truthiness was not questioned by the students could later involve in the process of design either positively or negatively. According to the teachings of Bauhaus, preconceived opinions feature a resistance against the new and different while according to the positivist approaches originated in later years conventions and knowledge over years shed light on design and constitute a creative design foresight (Ertek, 1999). Both of these approaches have some point. Nevertheless, it must be remembered that basic design education is, in a sense, the pre-school of the design education. In this school, students ought to be taught that they must realize themselves, they have ideas, and these ideas can be supported by others as well as they might be objected. The main purpose is provide them with an education system appropriate for their own skills, and in which they can stand out, as Denel states it all by saying “after we base our education system on a principle that gives credit to obedient persons whom can be developed in a multi-faceted way and destroys those resisting, not literally but their ideas, we try to reteach the troubled ones what we have been unteaching for years.” Another goal of this education is to maintain it as workshop training in studios. In this way, the student will think more creatively and productively, will be able to come up with alternatives, and will be provided with an infrastructure in order for him to develop a different system of thinking. By means of workshops that are organised for a defined time in studios, students can scan sources about the subject, can make observation, can make new collaborations in groups. These groups can be conducted with small or large groups depending on the context and process of the workshop. In small group workshops, each member take in charge more, and the group can be controlled easily. Conversely, workshop groups which are broad in subject, groups have more members and if it is possible to work effectively, can have result with much more alternative and improved projects. Besides short-time workshops, studio places must be designed in proper way for increasing students’ productivity and relaxing for whole of the semester. Therefore, any wall or boundry in non- pysical way should not be placed between students and teachers, they must have a strong communication for any moment in studio time, Tasarım, varolan problemin getirdiği sınırlılıklar içinde ve belirli hedefler doğrultusunda, zihinde oluşturulan birtakım resimlerin somut ve özgün birer ürüne dönüşme sürecindeki denemelerdir.

The basic design course is the heritage of the Bauhaus and similar avant-garde approaches, who established a practical education system and a theoretical framework comprehending art and design disciplines during the early 20th century. Today, basic design is still the most important course of the first year in the curriculum of many art and design programs in Turkey and abroad. This is also viable for architectural education. In the discipline of architecture, which is based on the definition of space, basic design has a special value for the comprehension of basic principles in the transition between two dimensional and three dimensional compositions. For the student facing the design process for the first time, it is difficult to understand the basic design principles. This study reinterprets the Suprematist painting compositions of the early 20th century Russian avant-garde through applicable examples and raises new proposals for basic design applications.

In this study it was aimed to develop a module for teaching design principles and basic concepts to new-beginners of design education as well as to raise their interest in digital media tools and provide their interactivity in the early period through this auxiliary interface developed using scripts of a 3D modeling software. Accordingly, developing the software “EduDesign”, made up of different modules (stick composer, shell and surface deformations, making composition, color organizations…), different solutions were examined. After testing phase by different users, the modules were revised according to the feedbacks. Consequently, while it was generally paid attention to consistence of the enhanced software applications with the pre-defined aims, the positive reactions coming from users and their evaluations and suggestions for future works, the work was approved for its aims and emphasized to be open-ended., Yüksek Lisans, M.Sc.
