Purpose: This study aims to present an efficient and reliable graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs)-based temperature sensor. Design/methodology/approach: A high-quality dispersion of GNPs was dropped by casting method on platinum electrodes deposited on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The GNPs were characterized by scanning electron microscope, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction spectra to ensure its purity and quality. The temperature sensing behavior of the fabricated sensor was examined by subjecting it to different temperatures, range from room temperature (RT) to 150 °C. Findings: Excellent resistance linearity with temperature change was achieved. Temperature coefficient of resistance of the fabricated sensor was calculated as 1.4 × 10–3°C. The sensor also showed excellent repeatability and stability for the measured temperature range. Good response and recovery times were evaluated at all the measured temperatures. With measuring the sensor response, the ambient temperature can be determined. To diagnose the running state of bushing and avoid serious power grid accidents, online multi‐parameter monitoring equipment for dissolved hydrogen, oil pressure and temperature in bushing oil was developed. The equipment includes three units: signal acquisition, control cabinet and data analysis. A new hydrogen sensor without oil–gas separation membrane and based on palladium alloy film technology was developed. A three‐in‐one sensor for hydrogen, oil temperature and pressure monitoring has been developed, which has the advantages of miniaturisation, lightweight and easy installation. Test results show the hydrogen measurement range of the sensor is 0–5000 ppm, and the accuracy can reach 10% or 15 ppm (with larger values). The pressure measurement range is 0–1.0 MPa, the resolution is 0.1 kPa, and the accuracy can reach 0.25 grade. The temperature measurement range is −40 to 105°C, and the accuracy is ±1°C. The measurement performance of the device fully meets the requirement of online monitoring of transformer bushing. The equipment has been put into operation in a 330 kV substation, which can monitor the bushing status online and help eliminate the early latent fault of bushing in the weak budding state. The two most important measurement categories in production are temperature and load. Therefore commercial sensors are applied in machinery as near as possible to the working parts. For a cost efficient production the integration of sensor elements directly on top of the surface in the heavily loaded regions is essential to get the real temperature and load distributions during the production process. Therefore a new multifunctional thin film sensor system is in development. This multilayer system combines thermoresistive sensor structures with piezoresistive ones and exists out of wear resistant carbon based layers (Bewilogua and Hofmann, Surf Coat Technol 242:214-225, 2014; Biehl et al. Thin Solid Films 515:1171-1175, 2006; Biehl et al. Microsystem Technologies, Springer, 2010; Biehl et al. Microsystem Technologies, Springer, 2014; Robertson, Daim Relat Mater 12:79-84, 2003). The development of carbon nanotube (CNT)‐based sensors remains an active area of research. Towards this end, a new method for manipulating CNTs, assembling CNT networks and fabricating CNT‐based nanosensors was demonstrated in this study. CNTs were collected and concentrated by optically‐induced dielectrophoresis (ODEP) forces and aligned between a pair of electrodes. This assembly was then used directly as a temperature sensor and a hot‐film anemometer, which detects changes in windspeed. By offering efficient CNT collection and ready‐to‐use sensor fabrication, this ODEP‐based approach presents a promising method for the development of CNT‐based sensing applications and massively parallel assembly of CNT‐lines. • Ag-CNT nanocomposite sensor showed a better temperature coefficient of resistance. • Ag-CNT nanocomposite sensors have higher sensitivity compared to conventional counterparts. • Ag-CNT nanocomposite TFS has a higher TCR compared to the only Ag TFS by 46.4%. Thin film sensor (TFS) is one of the most promising candidates for instantaneous temperature measurements owing to their extremely small response time (~milliseconds) aided with fair accuracy. Since they are capable of making quick and precise temperature measurements, they can be also used as heat flux gauges to measure surface heat fluxes in dynamic environments like high speed aerospace applications, gas turbine blades etc. Usual TFS are made by depositing a thin metallic film over insulating substrate. In this work we developed an Ag-Carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposite film as the sensing element of a TFS and compare it with pure Ag TFS, both having Macor as substrate. Static calibration established a better temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) value i.e. better sensitivity, for the nanocomposite TFS. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) studies are done to probe behind the increase in sensitivity of the nanocomposite TFS compared to its conventional metallic counterpart. A thin film of silica aerogel has been spin coated on silicon wafers to investigate its super thermal insulating capability. The temperature of the thin film heaters fabricated on the aerogel coated wafer is measured at different applied powers. Simulations are performed to compare the aerogel coated wafers with the micromachined wafers. Both experimental and simulation results show better heat insulation for aerogel coated wafers as compared with simulated micromachined wafers. The measurement and simulation results of aerogel coated wafers are in good agreement. The aerogel film can replace the air cavity created by conventional micromachining of wafers to save power and chip area in metal oxide gas sensor arrays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present the fabrication of an efficient thin film temperature sensor utilizing chemical vapor deposited carbon nanotube (CNT) film as the sensing element on Si substrates, with diamond-like carbon (DLC):Ni as a catalyst in assisting CNT growth. The fabricated sensor showed good electrical response with change in temperature. Relative linear change in resistance of 18.4% for an increase in temperature from 22 °C to 200 °C was achieved. Various characterizing techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy, were used to characterize the films. In an effort to study device performance, van der Pauw and Hall measurements were carried out to study the dependence of resistance on temperature and magnetic fields. Temperature coefficient of resistance of the sensor was calculated as 1.03 × 10−3/°C. All implications arising from the study are presented. The results establish the aptness of the as-grown CNT film to be used as an active sensing material in thin film temperature sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
