Critical scholarship has illustrated how COVID-19 public health policies can enact racism, classism, and cis-heteronormativity, perpetuating harms among vulnerable communities. We sought to examine the accounts of gay, bisexual, and queer men (GBQM) in Canada on how normative ideologies played out in COVID-19 directives and what impacts these orders had on their lives. Two rounds of semi-structured interviews with GBQM in Montreal (n = 30), Toronto (n = 33), and Vancouver (n = 30) were conducted between November 2020-February 2021 and June-October 2021 (N = 93). Our reflexive thematic analysis drew on the frameworks of cis-heteronormativity and intersectionality to examine how normative assumptions about kinship, sociality, and privilege in COVID-19 public health directives were understood and experienced by GBQM. Our participants explicated how cis-heteronormativity was pervasive in COVID-19 public health messaging, noting that stay-at-home orders and limits on social gatherings reinforced heterosexual forms of kinship. The privileging of cis-heteronormative sociality had detrimental effects on the sense of belonging and identity formation of many participants due to restricted access to queer spaces during the pandemic. Others indicated that stay-at-home orders failed to account for the heterogeneity of queer people's experiences of homelessness and structural racism. These findings provide valuable insights into how public health efforts to control COVID-19 infections have overlooked the complex forms of kinship among GBQM, the importance of queer spaces and community organizations, and the varying vulnerabilities of diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) groups. Objective: Epidemics impact individuals unevenly across race, gender, and sexuality. In addition to being more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection, evidence suggests racialized gender and sexual minorities experienced disproportionate levels of discrimination and stigma during the COVID-19 epidemic. Drawing on Critical Race Theory (CRT), we examined the experiences of gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men (GBQM) of colour facing discrimination during COVID-19. Design: Engage-COVID-19 is a mixed methods study examining the impact of COVID-19 on GBQM living in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montréal, Canada. We conducted two rounds of qualitative interviews (November 2020 to February 2021, and June to October 2021) with 93 GBQM to explore the evolving impact of COVID-19 on their lives. Transcripts were coded using inductive thematic analysis. Data analysis was conducted using Nvivo software. Results: Fifty-nine participants identified as Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Colour (BIPOC). These GBQM of colour described multiple experiences of discrimination during COVID-19. Although participants did not report experiences of discrimination based on their sexual identity during COVID-19, we found that experiences of racism affected how they were treated within their sexual networks. Experiences of racism were most often reported by East Asian and Black GBQM. These participants faced racism in public and online spaces, primarily in the form of verbal harassment. Several participants were also harassed because they wore face masks. Verbal abuse against GBQM of colour was largely prompted by racist discourses related to COVID-19. Conclusion: Racism remains a pernicious threat to the well-being of GBQM of colour. CRT highlights the importance of assessing how sexualized and gendered discourses about race shape the experiences of GBQM of colour navigating multiple epidemics like COVID-19 and HIV. One hope surrounding long-acting HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is reaching new users who could most benefit, as well as improving the experiences of oral PrEP users who may desire to switch modalities. Gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men (GBQM) continue to make up over half of new HIV diagnoses in Canada, and oral PrEP uptake has plateaued among this population. Approval of injectable PrEP is anticipated, but there is a paucity of research to inform health promotion and implementation. Between June and October 2021, we conducted 22 in-depth interviews with GBQM oral PrEP users and non-PrEP users living in Ontario, Canada. We also conducted small focus groups or individual interviews with 20 key stakeholders (health care providers, public health officials, community-based organization staff). Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed in NVivo using thematic analysis. Only about one-third of GBQM had heard of injectable PrEP. Many PrEP users perceived greater convenience, adherence, and confidentiality with injectable PrEP. Some PrEP users did not anticipate switching because of needle discomfort or feeling more "in control" with oral PrEP. None of the non-PrEP users said that injectable PrEP would make them start PrEP. Injectable PrEP may offer additional convenience for GBQM; however, it did not appear to affect participants' PrEP decision-making significantly. Stakeholders noted that injectable PrEP may improve access, support adherence, and benefit marginalized groups. Some clinicians expressed concerns about the time/personnel required to make injectable PrEP available. The PrEP Cascade is a dominant framework for investigating barriers to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), an HIV prevention tool. We interviewed 37 PrEP users and 8 non-PrEP users in Ontario and British Columbia, Canada, about their decision-making through the Cascade. Participants were HIV-negative gay, bisexual, and queer men (GBQM). The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. PrEP decision-making was based on pragmatic considerations (logistics, costs, and systemic barriers), biomedical considerations (efficacy, side-effects, and sexually transmitted infections), and subjective considerations (identity, politics, and changing sexual preferences). Affective attachments to established versions of "safer sex" (condoms and serosorting) made some GBQM less likely to try PrEP. Some GBQM expressed increased social expectations to use PrEP, have condomless sex, and serodifferent sex. These findings support offering PrEP at no-cost, offering individualized counseling and community-based opportunities to discuss PrEP use and changing sexual practices, and improving communication on the manageability of PrEP side-effects. Experts have warned that COVID-19 control measures may amplify health inequities among gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). For HIV-negative GBM, concerns have been raised as to how COVID-19 will disrupt access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Our study offers empirical findings on these issues, drawing on in-depth interviews conducted with 25 HIV-negative GBM living in Ontario, Canada during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our thematic analysis draws from the sociology of risk to elucidate how a public health morality – a contested ethical framework determining how to be a 'responsible' sexual citizen during the COVID-19 pandemic – informs GBM's sexual and PrEP decision-making. This public health morality was shaped by several factors, including: self-concern versus risks posed to others; anxiety, economic precarity, and becoming COVID-19 weary; shaming public health non-compliance; and comparisons with HIV and shaming (queer) sex. The participants significantly altered their sexual practices, with some stopping, restarting, and others stockpiling their PrEP. While some men's sexual practices ran counter to public health messaging to avoid 'non-essential' contact with those outside of their households, their risk reduction strategies, including avoiding new sexual partnerships and evaluating people's 'common-sense', mirrored the negotiated safety strategies earlier developed to mitigate HIV risk. Public health advice must account for the nuanced ways in which GBM are mitigating COVID-19 risks and are responding to a complex public health morality, in order to avoid stigmatization and potentially increasing COVID-19 transmission by neglecting practical risk reduction measures. Background: Effective treatment has extended the life expectancy and reduced disability in people living with HIV (PLWH). However, previous research has found 45–65% of working-age PLWH were unemployed compared to 5–10% in the general public of North America and Europe. We examined the barriers to gaining employment among PLWH. Methods: Thirty-five in-depth interviews were conducted in person or over the phone with PLWH living in Toronto or Ottawa. This included PLWH who were unemployed but actively seeking employment, as well as PLWH who had successfully gained employment through an agency that specifically supported PLWH funded by the AIDS Committee of Toronto. Interviews were conducted between February 2019 and March 2020. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The majority of participants were between the ages of 40–55 and identified as male. Participants shared many common barriers when describing their attempts to attain or maintain employment. Although varying in employment status at the time of the study, consistent barriers included experiencing HIV stigma in workplaces, challenges overcoming mental health illnesses, and difficulties in navigating social assistance and unemployment insurance programs when pursuing a return to work. Conclusions: PLWH face significant barriers when attempting to engage with employment opportunities. Health providers and organizations can do more to support campaigns to end HIV stigma, to support individuals in pursuing employment, and to advocate for policy change that supports reentry into the workforce for PLHA. Blood donation policies governing men who have sex with men have shifted significantly over time in Canada—from an initial lifetime ban in the wake of the AIDS crisis to successive phases of time-based deferment requiring periods of sexual abstinence (5 years to 1 year to 3 months). We interviewed 39 HIV-negative gay, bisexual, queer, and other sexual minority men (GBM) in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal to understand their willingness to donate blood if eligible. Transcripts were coded following inductive thematic analysis. We found interrelated and competing expressions of biological and sexual citizenship. Most participants said they were "safe"/"low risk" and "willing" donors and would gain satisfaction and civic pride from donation. Conversely, a smaller group neither prioritized the collectivizing biological citizenship goals associated with expanding blood donation access nor saw this as part of sexual citizenship priorities. Considerable repair work is required by Canada's blood operators to build trust with diverse GBM communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
