Abstract: Background: Congenital hemidysplasia with ichthyosiform erythroderma and limb defects (CHILD) syndrome is a rare X‐linked dominant disorder characterized by peculiar cutaneous presentations and ipsilateral skeletal abnormalities. CHILD syndrome is caused by mutations in NSDHL gene, which involves in cholesterol synthesis. Objectives: To verify the diagnosis of CHILD syndrome and seek effective pathogenesis‐based therapy with little side‐effects. Method: We comprehensively evaluated the patient's conditions. Pathological biopsy was performed in the lesion location. Genetic tests and real‐time quantitative PCR were conducted to further confirm the diagnosis. The topical application of a mixed lotion containing 2% simvastatin and 2% cholesterol to lesion areas based on the pathogenesis as well as the literature review. Results: We diagnosed a rare and typical case of CHILD syndrome co‐occurring with multiple VX‐like lesions. The gene mutation is a large deletion of exon 3 and 4 of the NSDHL gene, which was discovered and reported for the first time in CHILD syndrome. The skin lesions, including the verruciform plaques and VX‐like lesions, improved obviously after treatment. Conclusions: Multiple exons deletions or microdeletion was not rare in CHILD syndrome. Classical Sanger sequencing may not be useful enough to find all kinds of mutations. Next‐generation sequencing may be more effective. It is important to conduct genetic counselling to prevent more serious defects in descendants. The excellent therapeutic effect on CHILD syndrome resulted from the topical treatment with simvastatin/cholesterol provides a proof‐of‐concept for other topical pathogenesis‐based therapies for skin disease. Reliable markers for the rapid discrimination of severe renal damage remain a vital concern for lupus nephritis (LN). To determine a better tool for kidney damage detection, the present study compared the evaluation ability of novel urinary cytokines and chemokines (namely urinary monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (uMCP-1), tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (uTWEAK)) with traditional serum or urinary markers (namely urinary alpha 1-microgrobulin (uα1-MG), beta 2-microglobulin (uβ2-MG) and serum complement C3 (C3), complement C4 (C4), creatinine (Cr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and cystatin C (Cys C)) in discriminating LN renal damage. Correlations between markers with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) renal SLEDAI scores, biopsy activity index (BAI) and biopsy chronicity index (BCI) scores were evaluated. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to evaluate a single or combined model in discriminating active renal involvement (rSLEDAI scores > 0) and patients with poor pathological outcome (BAI scores ≥ 7). uMCP-1 and uTWEAK possess higher correlation coefficients with renal damage and larger areas under ROC curves (AUCs) than other markers. A combined model of uMCP-1 and uTWEAK showed an AUC of 0.887, sensitivity of 86.67% and specificity of 80.00% to discriminate active LN, and an AUC of 0.778, sensitivity of 75.00% and specificity of 81.82% to discriminate LN with poor outcome, which are better than the utility of any markers individually. We examined the effect of combination antiretroviral therapy ( cART) on liver fibrosis among HIV-infected patients with or without hepatitis B ( HBV) or C virus ( HCV) co-infection. This was a retrospective cohort study of HIV-infected patients receiving cART during 2004-2016. Liver fibrosis was assessed using Fibrosis-4 ( FIB-4) score with three classifications: Class 1, <1.45; Class 2, 1.45-3.25; Class 3, >3.25. Of 3900 participants, 68.6% were HIV mono-infected, 5.3% were HIV/ HBV co-infected, 23.8% were HIV/ HCV co-infected and 2.3% were HIV/ HBV/ HCV co-infected. Participants received follow-up treatment (median was 3.3 years). Improvement to a lower class was observed in Class 2 (52.6%) and Class 3 (74.2%), respectively. Progression to a higher class was observed in 12.8% and 5.0% in Class 1 and Class 2, respectively, and with a median time of 5.7 months. For improvement to lower classes, older age, male, Dai ethnicity, injection drug use, HCV co-infection and tenofovir for treatment were negative predictors, but in Class 3 of FIB-4 and time-updated increases in CD4 count from baseline were positive predictors. For progression to higher classes, older age, male, Jingpo ethnicity and HCV co-infection were positive predictors, while baseline CD4 count and in Class 2 of FIB-4 were negative predictors. Improvement to lower class linked with decreased mortality risk among patients in Class 3. Early cART initiation for HIV-infected patients with and without hepatitis co-infections may mitigate or slow down some of liver fibrosis, but special attention should be given to those who are older, male, co-infected with HCV. The salivary glands and oral bacteria play an essential role in the conversion process from nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) to nitric oxide (NO) in the human body. NO is, at present, recognized as a multifarious messenger molecule with important vascular and metabolic functions. Besides the endogenous L-arginine pathway, which is catalyzed by complex NO synthases, nitrate in food contributes to the main extrinsic generation of NO through a series of sequential steps (NO3--NO2--NO pathway). Up to 25% of nitrate in circulation is actively taken up by the salivary glands, and as a result, its concentration in saliva can increase 10- to 20-fold. However, the mechanism has not been clearly illustrated until recently, when sialin was identified as an electrogenic 2NO3-/H+ transporter in the plasma membrane of salivary acinar cells. Subsequently, the oral bacterial species located at the posterior part of the tongue reduce nitrate to nitrite, as catalyzed by nitrate reductase enzymes. These bacteria use nitrate and nitrite as final electron acceptors in their respiration and meanwhile help the host to convert nitrate to NO as the first step. This review describes the role of salivary glands and oral bacteria in the metabolism of nitrate and in the maintenance of NO homeostasis. Objective To investigate the thromboembolism induced by blood-mediated inflammatory reactions against infused cells during the clinical application of stem cells. Methods Two patients with renal transplantation and chronic kidney disease, respectively, experienced thromboembolism after umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (UCMSC) infusion. The clinical manifestations and the laboratory test results were collected and analyzed. Results The patients received stem cell infusion through the peripheral veins and presented with a swollen and painful forearm postinfusion. Doppler ultrasound showed venous clots at the proximal end of the puncture site. Urokinase and warfarin were used for thrombolytic therapy. The swelling and pain were relieved and cured. Conclusion Safety concerns are still a primary hurdle for stem cell therapy, and thromboembolism as a critical complication should be prevented appropriately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paclitaxel has been extensively used as an antitumor drug to treat a broad range of epithelial cancers, including breast and cervical cancers. However, the efficacy of this drug is greatly limited by the development of acquired resistance. Identification of the underlying resistance mechanisms may inform the development of new therapies that elicit long-term response of tumors to paclitaxel treatment. Here we report that increased expression of TNFAIP1 (tumor necrosis factor alpha-Induced protein 1) confers acquired resistance to paclitaxel. TNFAIP1 is shown to compete with paclitaxel for binding to ß-tubulin, thereby preventing paclitaxel-induced tubulin polymerization, cell cycle arrest and ultimate cell death. We also show that expression of TNFAIP1 is regulated by the transcriptional factor Sp1. In a xenograft mouse model, increased expression of TNFAIP1 decreases, whereas knockdown of TNFAIP1 increases tumor response to paclitaxel. Therefore, these results reveal tnfaipl as a novel paclitaxelresistance associated gene and suggest that TNFAIP1 may represent a valuable therapeutic target for the treatment of cancer. This paper reports that decompression of the facial nerve by transarterial Onyx embolization may relieve hemifacial spasm (HFS) caused by dilated veins due to a right petrosal dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF). A 56-year-old man suffered severe chronic right HFS associated with a dilated right petrosal vein lying in the vicinity of the facial nerve. The right petrosal DAVF was reached through the middle meningeal artery using a transfemoral arterial approach and was occluded with Onyx 18 (M.T.I.- ev3, Irvine, CA, USA). There was complete remission of HFS without recurrence after two months of follow-up. This case supports vascular compression in the pathogenesis of HFS and suggests that facial nerve injury caused by a DAVF could be treated with transarterial Onyx embolization. Keloids are benign skin tumours occurring during wound healing in genetically predisposed patients. There is evidence that transforming growth factor (TGF)-β is involved in keloid formation. Collagen triple helix repeat containing-1 (Cthrc1) was identified as a novel gene expressed in the adventitia and neointima on arterial injury. It is indicated to be a cell type-specific inhibitor of TGF-β, which functionally increases cell migration while reducing collagen type I and III deposition. However, to our knowledge expression and regulatory mechanisms of Cthrc1 and TGF-β1 in keloid and normal skin have not been studied before. Cthrc1 gene regulation and potential role in keloid formation were determined, and its correlation with TGF-β1 involved in keloid pathogenesis was examined in human fibroblasts of keloids and normal skin. The expression of Cthrc1 and TGF-β1 was investigated in fibroblasts of keloid and normal skin. Collagen type I expression and collagen synthesis in keloid fibroblasts induced by TGF-β1 were examined. Then, recombinant Cthrc1 was applied to assess its correlation with TGF-β1. Increased TGF-β1 and Cthrc1 expression was examined in keloid compared with normal skin. Cthrc1 expression increased in a concentration-dependent manner induced by TGF-β1 in keloid fibroblasts. TGF-β1 stimulated collagen type I expression and collagen synthesis in keloid fibroblasts, which can be reversed by recombinant Cthrc1. TGF-β1 was upregulated in keloid fibroblasts and recombinant Cthrc1 inhibited TGF-β1-stimulated collagen type I synthesis, which suggests that Cthrc1 may be a potential therapeutic option for keloids. The aim of this study was to retrospectively review our experience of performing simultaneous operations on concomitant diseases in the esophagus and lungs. From January 1998 to July 2009, simultaneous operations were performed on 13 patients with concomitant esophageal and pulmonary diseases, using coordinated surgical approaches. Among the 13 patients, six had primary cancers in the esophagus and lungs, five had primary esophageal cancer accompanied by a benign pulmonary disease, one had benign diseases in both esophagus and lung, and one had primary esophageal cancer with metastasis to the left lower lung. All patients survived the operations. Two major complications occurred postoperatively. One complication was bronchopleural fistula and the other was intrathoracic gastric laceration. Both patients recovered after additional treatments. Simultaneous operation of concomitant diseases in the esophagus and lungs is feasible and safe in selected patients who have received careful preoperative assessment, well-designed surgical approach, and proper perioperative management. GVHD remains a major source of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic BMT. GVHD is mediated by alloreactive T cells derived from the hematopoietic graft that target host tissues. Pre-clinical models have shown that presentation of alloantigens by host DCs results in the activation of donor-derived T cells that mediate GVHD. Strategies that interfere with the Ag-presenting capacity of DCs after allogeneic transplantation may decrease the risk of developing GVHD. Vitamin D is a hormone essential for calcium metabolism that shows immunomodulatory properties. We showed that correction of vitamin D deficiency appeared to mitigate manifestations of GVHD. In pre-clinical studies, we have shown that vitamin D inhibits DC maturation, polarizes T-cell populations toward the expression of Th2 as compared with Th1 cytokines, and blunts allogeneic T-cell proliferation in response to DC stimulation. Exposure to vitamin D resulted in increased expression of IDO, an enzyme responsible for tryptophan metabolism that is upregulated in tolerizing DCs. These data suggest that exposure to vitamin D results in immature DC populations that bias toward tolerizing rather than stimulatory T-cell populations. We report our experience in treating patients with seizures associated with brain arteriovenous malformations (AVM) without a clinical history of intracranial hemorrhage. Between 2001 and 2003, the neurovascular unit at Beijing Tiantan Hospital treated 109 patients with brain AVM endovascularly. Thirty patients (27.5%) experienced seizures before treatment. We studied the following factors: sex, age, AVM size, AVM location, seizure type, duration of seizure history, endovascular treatment and AVM obliteration. Clinical follow-up was via telephone interview. Thirty patients with seizure disorders due to brain AVMs were endovascularly treated. The age of the patients ranged from eight to 55 years. There were 22 males and eight females. The AVMs were smaller than 3 cm in five patients, between 3 cm and 6 cm in 22, and larger than 6 cm in three. The most frequent location of the AVMs was in the frontal, followed by the parietal, temporal and occipital lobes. Sixty-seven embolization procedures were performed and total obliteration was achieved in four patients. Two patients developed a hemiparesis and three suffered temporary dysphasia after embolization. Two patients had visual field deficits. There were no deaths. The results of post-embolization seizure control during the average follow-up period of 80 months were excellent in 21 patients, good in four, fair in two and poor in three. The advent of Onyx has provided a new method for neurointerventional therapists to treat brain AVMs. Although some retrospective studies have reported complications for AVM embolization with Onyx, periprocedural bleeding complications with Onyx embolization have not yet been described in detail. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the factors of Onyx-related bleeding complications and to find a way to avoid and manage these complications.From January 2003, patients with AVMs recruited in our institution started to be treated by Onyx embolization. From January 2007 to July 2009, 143 consecutive interventions were performed in 126 patients using flow-independent microcatheters and Onyx as embolic agents. Seven patients encountered bleeding complications (5.4% per patients and 4.7% per procedures) during or after the endovascular procedures. Among them, five bleeding episodes occurred during procedures, the other two after procedures. Details of the seven patients' clinical presentations, imaging presentations, speculative reasons and management of these complications were recorded. Follow-up data, including postoperative course, clinical symptoms and duration of follow-up were documented. The five active bleedings discovered in procedures were managed in time, and the patients recovered without any new neurological symptoms compared with preoperation. However, of the two bleeding episodes that occurred after interventional procedures, one was detected half an hour later: the patient was remained comatose two months later after resection of right occipital hematoma; the other who encountered intraventricular and midbrain hemorrhage was treated conservatively and suffered Parinaud syndrome and hemianesthesia. Conclusion: Periprocedural bleeding of AVMs embolization is considered a severe and devastating complication. The clinical course and prognosis of bleeding mostly depends on prompt detection and management. Interventional embolization is an effective method to manage bleeding during procedures, and the detection of risk factors and imaging signs of bleeding is extremely important. We reviewed the effectiveness of balloon kyphoplasty in the treatment of acute symptomatic vertebral compression fractures. We assessed radiographic and functional outcome in 11 patients with a 24.3 month follow-up from a retrospectively monitored series of 11 patients who underwent balloon kyphoplasty (BKP). A visual analogue scale (VAS) and the short McGill questionnaire (MPQ) were used to assess average symptoms. Eleven patients with 19 treated vertebrae completed the study. The VAS showed significant improvement after treatment: the initial score was 9.1±0.6 (mean±SD), falling to 2.7±1.07 by 24.3 months (P<0.001). The MPQ also showed a significant improvement (P<0.001) at follow-up. A new fracture was seen in one patient affecting two vertebrae adjacent to the treated level. On CT following the procedure, there was cement leakage in the disc in 9% of cases. BKP is a minimally invasive procedure that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of acute symptomatic vertebral compression fractures. This paper reports the incidence of tri-geminocardiac reflex (TCR) in endovascular treatment of dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) with Onyx. The consecutive case histories of 45 patients with DAVFs, treated with Onyx transarterially and transvenously, from February 2005 to February 2008 at Beijing Tiantan Hospital, China, were retrospectively reviewed. The time period was limited as the anesthetic and intravascular procedure was performed under the same standardized anesthetic protocol and by the same team. The TCR rate was subsequently calculated. Of the 45 patients, five showed evidence of TCR during transarterial Onyx injection and transvenous DMSO injection. Their HR fell 50% during intravascular procedures compared with levels immediately before the stimulus. However, blood pressure values were stable in all cases. The TCR rate for all patients was 11.1% (95% CI, 4 to 24%), 7.7% (95% CI, 2 to 21%) in patients treated intraarterially and 33.3% (4 to 78%) in patients treated intravenously. Once HR has fallen, intravenous atropine is indicated to block the depressor response and prevention further TCR episodes. TCR may occur due to chemical stimulus of DMSO and Onyx cast formation under a standardized anesthetic protocol and should be blunted by atropine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Distribution of B27 subtypes in juvenile and adult-onset ankylosing spondylitis (JAS and AAS) in Southern China was studied. A total of 505 patients belonged to Han population were included (145 JAS and 360 AAS patients), and 1368 healthy individuals were included as controls. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27 typing was performed by Luminex liquid array combining polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific oligonucleotide probe (PCR-SSOP) and/or serological method. HLA-B27 subtyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primer (PCR-SSP). The sequence-based typing was performed for the B*2715 samples to verify the PCR-SSP results. HLA-B27 was presented in 453 of 505 patients (89.7%), compared with 74 of 1368 controls (5.41%). B*2704 subtype in AS group was significantly higher than controls and B*2705 subtype significantly lower. B*2715 and B*2702 were found in 1.32% and 0.66% of the B27-positive patients but none in controls, and there was no significant difference between either of them and controls. B27-positive patients were 134 (92.4%) in JAS group and 319 (88.6%) in AAS group. There was no significant difference for B27 subtypes distribution between JAS (B*2704, 05, 15) and AAS (B*2704, 05, 15, 02) groups. The frequency of B*2715 in two groups was 3 (2.24%) and 3 (0.94%), respectively. The onset age of three JAS patients carrying B*2715 was 5, 9 and 13 years old, respectively. Our results suggested that B*2704 was the predominant subtype in AS patients in Southern China. B*2715 was observed in AS group only and slightly more in JAS than in AAS, and the patients carrying this allele tended to have early onset, B*2715 may be disease-association subtype. Background Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is involved in oesophageal carcinogenesis, but the clinical and prognostic significance of COX-2 expression in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains controversial. Aim To evaluate the clinicopathological and prognostic role of COX-2 expression in ESCC. Methods Studies assessing clinical or prognostic significance of COX-2 expression in ESCC published until December 2008 were selected. A meta-analysis was performed to clarify the impact of COX-2 expression on clinicopathological parameters or overall survival (OS) in ESCC. Results A total of 19 studies met the inclusion criteria, among which 17 studies were about the clinicopathological significance of COX-2 expression in ESCC, 12 studies were dealing with prognostic role of COX-2 expression in ESCC and 10 studies evaluated both of them. Overexpression of COX-2 was significantly correlated with not only the depth of invasion and TNM stage, with a combined odds ratio (OR) of 0.55 (95%CI: 0.34–0.90, Z = 2.41, P = 0.02) and 0.55 (95%CI: 0.32–0.95, Z = 2.13, P = 0.03) respectively but also the reduced OS with relative risk (RR) 1.42, 95% CI: 1.07–1.90, Z = 2.43, P = 0.02). Conclusions COX-2 might play an important role in the progress of ESCC, overexpression of COX-2 correlates with not only the depth of invasion and TNM stage but also the reduced OS. COX-2 might be a potential therapy target for ESCC and work as a prognostic factor for ESCC patients, yet the clinicopathological and prognostic role of COX-2 in ESCC still needs further confirmation by well-designed prospective studies. The article presents a retrospective cohort study which determined the proportion of inmates who filled an antiretroviral therapy (ART) prescription within 60 days of release from prison. The study was conducted to investigate the extent to which HIV-infected inmates experience ART interruption following release from prison. The main outcome was the proportion of inmates who filled an ART prescription within 10, 30, and 60 days of release from prison. Predictors of the outcome were examined. Researchers found that a small percentage of Texas prison inmates receiving ART filled an ART prescription within 60 days of their release.

Background: The migration and in situ differentiation of CD34+ progenitors contribute to inflammatory eosinophilia in asthma and corticosteroids have been widely used in asthma. However, little is know about whether and how corticosteroids modulate the migration and differentiation of CD34+ progenitors. This study was aimed to investigate the impact of anti-CC chemokine receptor 3 (CCR3) or dexamethasone on inflammatory eosinophilia in asthma and possible mechanism(s) underlying the action of dexamethasone or anti-CCR3 on migration and differentiation of CD34+ progenitors in asthmatic context. Methods: Using an asthmatic mouse model, airway inflammation of anti-CCR3- or dexamethasone-treated mice and that of controls were characterized. And the migration and differentiation of CD34+ progenitor cells were analyzed in vivo, ex vivo or in vitro. Results: Treatment with anti-CCR3 or dexamethasone significantly inhibited allergen-induced eosinophilia and CD34+ progenitor cell infiltration in the lung, which was accompanied by lower levels of airway hyper-responsiveness and mucus production. Moreover, anti-CCR3 inhibited the eotaxin-mediated migration and IL-5/eotaxin-induced differentiation of CD34+ progenitors in vitro. Dexamethasone was also shown to mitigate eotaxin-mediated migration and IL-5 or eotaxin-promoted differentiation of CD34+ progenitor cells ex vivo, which were associated with the down-regulation of CCR3 expression on bone marrow progenitor cells. Conclusions: Treatment with anti-CCR3 or dexamethasone can inhibit the migration and differentiation of CD34+ progenitor cells by regulating the eotaxin/CCR3 axis in asthmatic mice. Our findings provide new insights into understanding the mechanism(s) underlying the action of dexamethasone and CCR3-mediated signaling in allergic inflammation and aid in the design of new immunotherapy for intervention of human asthma. MicroRNAs participate in the regulation of asthma, the goal of this study is to summarize recent researches on the roles of microRNAs in the pathogenesis of asthma. A review of the English medical literatures was conducted by searching PubMed for studies concerning asthma and microRNAs. The results of the present study indicate that microRNAs play important roles in regulating asthma immune responses. MicroRNAs not only participate in determining DCs phenotype and then naive T lymphocyte differentiation, but also participate in the regulation of airway inflammation and airway remodeling in asthma. Furthermore, microRNAs are also shown to be targets for asthma therapy in the future.

STUDY DESIGN.: A retrospective analysis was performed. OBJECTIVE.: To analyze the characteristics of aneurysmal bone cyst arising from giant cell tumor of the mobile spine and to discuss the outcome of corresponding surgical and nonsurgical treatment. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA.: Giant cell tumors are generally benign neoplasms that exhibit aggressive behavior with a tendency to recur locally. Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign, highly vascular osseous lesions. Although both of them have been described separately in previous literatures, few reports have described aneurysmal bone cyst secondary to giant cell tumor of the mobile spine. METHODS.: Between January 2004 and December 2009, 11 patients were identified with an aneurysmal bone cyst arising from giant cell tumor of the mobile spine. Four patients underwent subtotal tumor resection followed by radiotherapy, and the other 7 patients underwent total tumor resection. Patients with lesions located below T6 were treated with selective arterial embolization before surgery. Clinical data and the efficacy of surgery were analyzed via chart review RESULTS.: Of the eleven patients identified for inclusion in this study, the average age was 33 months (range 14-65 months). The mean length of follow-up was 31 months. Seven patients kept disease-free during the follow-ups. The remaining four patients recurred and one died of local re-recurrence and lung metastasis. CONCLUSION.: Unlike primary aneurysmal bone cyst, secondary aneurysmal bone cyst arising from giant cell tumor of the mobile spine has a more aggressive tendency to recurrence locally. Complete resection with systematic radiotherapy should be undertaken for the treatment of aneurysmal bone cyst secondary to giant cell tumor of the mobile spine, which is associated with a good prognosis for local tumor control. As complete or as radical an operation as possible should be performed at first presentation. The best chance for the patient is the first chance. Selective preoperative embolization is advised to minimize intraoperative blood loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We retrospectively examined the timing of antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation and CD4 + T-cell recovery over 36 months among recent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections using BED (HIV-1 subtypes B, E and D) immunoglobulin G capture enzyme immunoassay (BED-CEIA). Regardless of baseline CD4 + counts, individuals ( n = 393) who initiated ART >2 months after diagnosis had significantly decreased probability and rate of achieving CD4 + counts ≥900 cells/μL or ≥600 cells/μL than those individuals ( n = 135) who started ART earlier (≤2 months). But the mean CD4 + counts in two groups converged after 30 months of treatment. Early ART initiation leads to accelerated CD4 + recovery, but does not offer a long-term advantage in CD4 + counts. Although bovine mastitis caused by Streptococcus strains is the most economically important disease affecting the dairy industry worldwide, the development of an effective vaccine has been hampered for many years. In this study, five S. agalactiae, three S. dysgalactiae, and three S. uberis were identified out of thirteen Streptococcus strains isolated during a study of clinical bovine mastitis from seven farms in China. The gapC genes, encoding the cell surface-associated GapC proteins of S. agalactiae, S. dysgalactiae and S. uberis were cloned and sequenced. To further identify potential vaccine candidates against Streptococcus-induced bovine mastitis, mice were vaccinated with GapC of S. agalactiae, S. dysgalactiae and S. uberis, resulting in a significant humoral immune for three weeks post-challenge. This observation together with previous studies conducted in our laboratory on GAPDH activity of Staphylococcus aureus possibly makes this protein an important target for vaccine development against bovine mastitis.
