Thermal comfort, self‐reported acute health symptoms, cognitive performance, and physiological reactions were examined at four temperatures (26, 30, 33, and 37°C) at a relative humidity of 70%. Thirty‐two sub‐tropically acclimatized subjects experienced each condition for 175 minute, in balanced order, in a climatic chamber. The perception of heat gradually increased with increasing temperature, but the subjects felt hot only at 37°C. The temperature of 33°C was on average rated as acceptable and only just uncomfortable. The acceptability of air quality decreased linearly with increasing temperature. The intensity of acute health symptoms reported by the subjects increased with increasing temperature, but it was no more than moderate even at the highest temperature; dryness of skin and eye were alleviated. The eardrum temperature, skin temperature and moisture, heart rate, end‐tidal carbon dioxide, and weight loss increased significantly with increasing temperature, whereas the percentage of adjacent heart inter‐beat intervals differing by >50 ms decreased significantly. These results suggest that the perceived heat, self‐reported symptoms, and physiological reactions occurred concurrently. They show additionally that acclimatization to heat may shift the boundary of thermal discomfort to a higher temperature. This study investigated the effects of four important microclimate parameters on outdoor thermal sensation and neutral temperature. A long term (almost 2 years) field investigation was conducted at six typical public spaces in Changsha China, with hot-summer and cold-winter climate. During a single investigation of one day (from 9:00 to 18:00), outdoor air temperature, air humidity, global temperature and wind speed were continuously measured at one measuring point. People visiting the public spaces (near the measuring site) were randomly invited to fill out a questionnaire describing their feelings of thermal comfort and other important psychological factors. Based on the field data (7851 samples), relationship between people’s outdoor thermal sensation and the microclimate parameters were quantified. Further, the effect of the microclimate parameters on outdoor thermal sensation and neutral temperatures was analyzed. The results revealed that outdoor microclimate parameters, especially outdoor air temperature, play important roles on outdoor thermal sensation when people stay outdoors. The variation in outdoor microclimate parameters led to the biggest change of outdoor neutral temperature in winter. Seasonal and regional differences in outdoor neutral temperature were found, which reflects different thermal comfort requirements under distinct outdoor microclimate conditions. Abstract: The indoor air diffusion of a typical office equipped with a floor-standing type air-conditioner (FSAC) in summer was evaluated and optimized. Two existing evaluation indexes, the air diffusion performance index and the energy utilization coefficient, were modified for their more reasonable application in the evaluation on air diffusion performance of a FSAC. And also, a new index, fast cooling effect index, was presented to evaluate the fast-cooling effect. Based on the indoor airflow simulation using computational fluid dynamics, the three indexes were applied to evaluate the air diffusion performance of the FSAC. As a result, the optimal indoor air diffusion types with best thermal feelings, fine energy utilization efficiency and excellent fast-cooling effect were obtained, and also, a control scheme was suggested. Abstract: An evaluation model for individual thermal comfort is presented based on the BP neural network. The train data came from a thermal comfort survey. The evaluation results of the model showed a good match with the subject''s real thermal sensation, which indicated that the model can be used to evaluate individual thermal comfort rightly. Taken a room air conditioner as an example, the application of the NNEM in creating a microenvironment for individual was discussed. The result showed that the NNEM can play an important role of connecting individual thermal comfort with the control on the air conditioner. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Facial skin temperature has been applied to evaluate thermal comfort in a few studies, but the related theoretical basis is not sufficient. We conducted a climate‐controlled experiment in winter. The air temperatures were 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24°C, and the relative humidity was set to 60%. During exposure (140 min), the subjects were in a sedentary state, and their thermal sensation, comfort, and acceptability of perceived thermal environments were documented many times. iButton instruments were used to continuously and automatically record skin temperatures on the forehead, nose, right ear, right cheek, left cheek, left ear, and chin. The measurement accuracy of the corrected skin temperature was within 0.1°C after calibrating each i‐Button. The experimental results showed that the skin temperatures at different measurement points varied significantly. The forehead skin temperature was the highest, whereas the nose, being the facial part, exhibited the lowest skin temperature (except 24°C). The uneven degree of the skin temperature distribution increased as air temperature decreased. Correlation analysis confirmed that the facial skin temperature can be used to evaluate thermal sensation. Nose skin temperature and the average skin temperature of the forehead, nose, and chin are the most suitable indicators of thermal sensation. The correlation between facial skin temperature and the thermal sensation was significantly higher after 15 min of exposure time than that during 0–15 min. Saving energy consumption of air-conditioning is essential to building energy conservation while satisfying the thermal comfort requirements of indoor environment. On the basis of human clothing adjustment behavior, a dynamic setting temperature (DST) that adapts to climate change was proposed in this paper, i.e. indoor air-conditioning setting temperature changes dynamically with outdoor air temperature; furthermore. A method was established to obtain the DST. The daily mean clothing insulation was predicted according to the historical temperature at first, then indoor thermal comfort temperature was calculated based on the variable clothing insulation, and finally the DST was determined. According to the value or range of predicted mean vote (0, -0.5~0.5, -1~+1) corresponding to the thermal comfort, three levels of DST were defined. The corresponding thermal acceptability rates were 95%, 90% and 73%, respectively. A simulation of DST was conducted in a public building in Changsha, China based on meteorological data of 2017. Three levels of DST ranges were obtained, varied from 20.1 to 27.8 °C in level I, 17.8 to 28.7 °C in level II and 15.4 to 29.7 °C in level III, respectively. The simulation results of operational air-conditioning energy consumption shows that the application of DST could save up to 65.5% of energy consumption compared with the traditional fixed setting temperature (FST), and the operational energy consumption decreased by 59.1% due to the application of level-III DST compared with level-I DST. The relation between electroencephalogram signals, thermal comfort, and cognitive performance in neutral to hot indoor environment was investigated. The experiments were carried out at four temperatures: 26ºC, 30ºC, 33ºC, and 37ºC, and two relative humidity levels: 50% and 70%. Thirty‐two subjects were exposed for 175 min. The electroencephalogram signals were measured for 30 min 25 min after the onset of exposure while the recruited subjects performed neurobehavioral tests and rated their thermal comfort. The relative power of electroencephalogram signals has a significant correlation with thermal comfort and performance of neurobehavioral tests. The ratings of acceptability of thermal environment and thermal comfort, the speed, accuracy, and PI of completing the tests are negatively correlated with the relative power of δ‐band, but positively correlated with θ‐band, α‐band, and β‐band. The ratings of thermal sensation have a better correlation with the above four bands, but the correlation trend is opposite. A linear relation was found between electroencephalogram signals and the speed. The results showed that the relative power of P7 channel located in the occipital lobe is the most suitable as a single electroencephalogram channel to reflect joint thermal comfort and cognitive performance at high temperatures, especially its α‐band. In this study, we examined the cognitive performance of subtropically acclimatized subjects at an extreme high indoor temperature and the effect of decreased humidity on the cognitive performance at the high temperature. Forty‐eight healthy subjects experienced the three exposure conditions: 26°C/relative humidity (RH) 70%, 39°C/RH50%, and 39°C/RH70% in a climate chamber. During 140‐minute‐long exposures to each thermal condition, they were required to perform cognitive tests that assess the perception, spatial orientation, concentration, memory, and thinking abilities. Meanwhile, their heart rate, core temperature, skin temperature, blood pressure, and body weight were measured and subjective responses, that is, thermal comfort, perceived air quality, and acute health symptoms were investigated. At the relative humidity of 70%, increasing indoor temperature from 26°C to 39°C caused a significant decrease in the accuracy of these cognitive tests. However, when the relative humidity decreased from 70% to 50% at 39°C, the accuracy of the cognitive tests increased significantly. Accordingly, the physiological and subjective responses of the subjects changed significantly with the changes in indoor temperature and humidity, which provided a basis to the variation in the cognitive performance. Recently, studies suggest that the average indoor temperature is typically >30°C and that the maximum temperature can reach 37.5°C in hot‐humid areas. However, the effects caused by increasing the humidity at high indoor temperatures are not clear. In this study, twelve female and twelve male subjects were exposed to different operative temperature (26.6, 30.6, and 37.4°C) and relative humidity (50% and 70%) in a climate chamber. Data concerning thermal sensation, perceived air quality, and Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) were collected during 190‐min‐long exposure to each thermal condition. Heart rate, respiration rate, respiratory ventilation rate, mean skin temperature, and eardrum temperature were measured. It was found that increasing the relative humidity from 50% to 70% at 26 and 30°C had no significant effects on the physiological responses, thermal comfort, perceived air quality, or SBS symptoms of the subjects. However, when the temperature was elevated to 37°C, the heart rate, respiration rate, respiratory ventilation rate, mean skin temperature, and eardrum temperature increased significantly as a result of the increase in the relative humidity from 50% to 70%. The subjects felt hotter and more uncomfortable, and they found indoor air quality was more difficult to accept. The subjects are acclimatized to hot environments and more tolerant to heat. The mechanism of human thermal comfort is important for building a comfortable and healthy indoor environment. This paper analyzes human heart rate variability (HRV) at different thermal comfort levels and discusses the mechanism of human thermal comfort. A total of 33 subjects were divided in 3 groups. Under air temperatures of 21, 24, 26, 28, 29, and 30 degrees C, the subjects' electrocardiogram was recorded for 5 min. HRV (the ratio of absolute powers in low- and high-frequency bands, LF/HF ratio) was analyzed. LF/HF at discomfort level were significantly higher than that at comfort level (P < 0.05), despite the same thermal sensation. The results indicate that sympathetic activity plays an important role in subjects' thermal discomfort and the LF/HF ratio may be used as an indicator for human thermal comfort. Indoor thermal environment design parameters have a significant impact on human thermal comfort, health and building energy consumption. The methods of determining indoor thermal environment design parameters in China and around the world are mainly based on the PMV model. This method often results in certain errors deviations from the actual situation and has difficulty reflecting the differences in the thermal environmental requirements in different climate regions, seasons, building types, etc. This paper proposes a data-driven method based on Chinese Thermal Comfort Database and uses a logistic regression to obtain the indoor air temperature range that 80% of occupants find thermally acceptable under different conditions. The results indicate that the prediction of this model are in good agreement with the actual data and have as higher accuracy in predicting the percentage of thermal acceptability than a linear regression method. This model shows that different regions, seasons, and building types have different acceptable temperature ranges and that the acceptable air temperature ranges are on average 2.0 °C wider than the ISO 7730 and 0.7 °C wider than the GB50736-2012. This method is conducive to the determination of air temperature thresholds and better reflects people's equirements for thermal environment under different conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
