Patient: A 37-year-old woman presented with Mondor's thrombophlebitis 13 years after augmentation mammaplasty with subpectoral saline implants. She presented complaining of 1 week of "band-like" cords and pain involving the thoracoepigastric and lateral thoracic vessels. She was evaluated and ruled out for other etiologies of her breast symptoms., Background: Mondor's disease is a benign and self-limiting disease characterized by thrombophlebitis of the subcutaneous veins of the chest and abdominal wall. The inflammation causes painful superficial cords manifesting as skin retraction. Mondor's disease has been described in aesthetic breast surgery literature, but most cases occur within the first few postoperative weeks., Conclusions: Mondor's disease may be idiopathic, iatrogenic, or a manifestation of underlying pathology such as breast cancer. The diagnosis of iatrogenic Mondor's disease can be made with high clinical certainty when following aesthetic breast surgery in the early postoperative period. However, in late presentations that are not immediately related to surgery, Mondor's disease remains a diagnosis of exclusion, and other underlying pathologic etiologies must be ruled out.

This disease, Mondor's disease, is a self-limiting disease caused by a thrombophlebitis of the superficial epigastric and thoracic veins. In this case repetitive injury sustained from running was probably the cause.

Aim: The study of the Mondor's syndrome as a possible complication of gigantomastia., Material and Method: A 49 year old woman, with gigantomastia, came to our observation for the presence of a large superficial vein of the left breast affected by thrombophlebitis, compatible with Mondor's syndrome., Results: A "Thorek" breast reduction was performed; the patient was discharged on the second postoperative day and the follow up was smooth and fee from any complications., Discussion: In the case we observed, gigantomastia had a clear role in the pathogenesis of the Mondor's disease; in fact, the excessive weight of the breasts caused stretching of the mammary dorsal vein evolving in phlebitis. In literature, among the causes related to Mondor's disease the pendulous breast is described, probably with the same dynamic we have seen in this patient, but has never reported, so obviously, the correlation between the two events. It's considered as good practice in the pre-operative evaluation, to make differential diagnosis with any cancer, that, in a certain percentage, is associated with Mondor's syndrome, and once established the causes of the pathology, it is imperative to eliminate them to prevent any relapses., Conclusion: Among the various causes recognized as predisposing to Mondor's syndrome, there has never been described gigantomastia so far. The observation and treatment of a patient in whom the gigantomastia certainly led to the onset of Mondor's disease, has led us to consider this as one of the possible complications of gigantomastia, providing an additional cue to the treatment of this condition even at an early stage.

Superficial thrombophlebitis of the thoracoepigastric veins (also known as Mondor's disease) is an uncommon disorder that typically affects middle-aged women and classically involves the chest wall including the breasts. Only one previously published, non-operative case of the disease, describes how the condition can resemble a strangulated Spigelian hernia. Herein we describe another similar case in which the diagnosis was made intra-operatively. The extremely unusual and similar clinical findings we observed demonstrate that Mondor's disease can occur in the Spigelian hernia belt and cause diagnostic confusion.

Objective: Our purpose was to examine the computed tomographic findings in 13 patients with acute deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of central veins of the neck, chest, and abdomen in whom major perivenous inflammatory changes were noted., Methods: During a 10-year period, 13 patients with acute DVT of 21 central veins and marked perivenous inflammatory changes on computed tomography were identified. Computed tomography images were assessed for location of DVT and pattern of perivenous changes., Results: The perivenous changes took the form of a rounded or lobulated perivenous bulky mass (massive pattern or tumorlike) in 5 patients and of infiltrative changes in the other 8 patients. Direct visualization of the thrombotic vein was possible in 8 patients. Follow-up examinations (range, 6-36 months; mean, 15 months) demonstrated resolution of perivenous inflammatory changes with anticoagulation therapy in all cases., Conclusion: Perivenous inflammatory changes around the thrombotic vein presented as a rounded or lobulated perivenous bulky mass that may mimic a tumor or as infiltrative perivenous changes.

Background: Mondor's disease is a rare disorder characterized by superficial thrombophlebitis, classically of the thoracic-epigastric and/or lateral thoracic veins. The etiopathogenesis of the disease is not entirely clear., Objective: We report the case of a patient who presented with recurrent Mondor's disease involving the left abdominal wall along the thoracoepigastric vein as far as the ipsilateral iliac fossa where a lipoma was observed., Methods: Surgical removal of the lipoma showed a close anatomical relationship between the affected veins and the neoformation., Results: Follow-up after 1 year did not reveal any signs of relapse of the thrombophlebitis., Conclusion: Since primary or secondary factors leading to hypercoagulability states were not detected in our patient, we speculate that the interference of venous flow by the abdominal lipoma was probably implicated in the etiopathogenesis of the disease.

The Authors observed and report a case of Mondor's syndrome in a male. In the attempt to identify the real origin in this peculiar thrombophlebitis they reviewed the recent literature. It is apparently impossible to drawn definitive conclusions from the different studies on this subject. Anyway Mondor's syndrome looks suitable for inclusion in the group of jumping thrombophlebitis. Therefore the real cause of the venous accident should be a pathologic situation next to the venous branch where the thrombophlebitis has broken out.

Mondor's disease or thrombophlebitis of the subcutaneous veins of the chest region is an uncommon condition and is rarely associated with breast cancer. From January 1980 to June 1990, 63 cases of Mondor's disease were diagnosed (57 women and 6 men). In 31 patients, no apparent cause was determined (primary disease), whereas in 32 cases, the disease was secondary because the etiopathogenesis could be discerned. The identified potential causes were three cases of myentasis (all in men), eight cases of accidental local trauma (seven in women), seven cases of iatrogenic origin (three surgical breast biopsies, one skin biopsy, one needle biopsy, one mastectomy, and one reconstruction operation), six cases of inflammatory process, and eight cases associated with breast cancer (all females). Three of the tumors were less than 1 cm in diameter. The authors performed conservative surgery in four patients and demolitive in the other four. In this series, the incidence of breast cancer in association with Mondor's disease was the highest yet reported (12.7%). It was concluded that Mondor's disease may at times be caused by breast carcinoma. This association is by no means exceptional and implies that mammography should always be performed for Mondor's disease, even when the results of a physical examination are negative.

The clinical, anatomical, topographical and pathological features of Mondor's disease are described, and five personal cases are presented. Their aetiopathogenetic characteristics reflect the doubts expressed in the literature. Stress is laid on the benign nature of the disease, the possibility of treating it at the out-patient level, and the complete remission of both subjective and objective symptoms obtainable in the space of a few weeks.

Thrombophlebitis of the chest wall is a benign, self-limiting condition. When it is recognized, the patient can be confidently reassured that spontaneous resolution is expected. The characteristic cutaneous cords are palpable five to seven weeks postoperatively, and they generally resolve within several months without specific therapy. Mondor's disease appears to be related to injury of the subcutaneous chest veins at the initial surgery rather than at reoperation. There is no apparent relationship between Mondor's disease and silicon implants nor between Mondor's disease and capsule contracture. Mondor's disease may be more common then generally believed.

Suppurative thrombophlebitis is a potentially lethal intravascular infection associated with the usage of intravenous catheters. Conventional approaches to management include ligation and excision of involved venous structures. These measures may not be feasible in all situations. This paper describes the successful medical/surgical management of a patient with suppurative thrombophlebitis of the major vessels of the chest. When suppurative thrombophlebitis extends into the large central veins and antibiotic therapy fails, surgical intervention may be necessary.

Mondor's disease, a harmless superficial thrombophlebitis of mainly thoracic veins, was diagnosed in four patients. Two of them were initially suspected of carcinoma of the breast, while the two others were thought to have a helminthic infection. Symptoms, signs, pathology and aetiology of this disease are discussed.

This 32-year-old male patient came to our emergency ward because he was suffering of a painful string on his lateral thorax wall. There was no causative event in his history. Because of the clinical findings and the lacking inflammatory signs the diagnosis of Mondor's disease could be established. This selflimited disease is now generally accepted to be a thrombophlebitis of the lateral thorax veins. The disease can spread to the arm veins or the epigastric veins. The therapy is symptomatic in local application of antiphlogistic drugs.
