Strength training induces not only muscle growth but also increased bone strength, a change that is expected to be associated with increased bone blood flow. However, the effects of exercise on contractile properties of bone microvascultaure have not been investigated. Once-a-week strength training with electrical muscle stimulation was applied unilaterally to tibialis anterior muscle of guinea pigs, while muscle force was measured from both legs to compare their muscle strength and endurance. After 10 weeks of training, changes in the arteriolar diameters of isolated periosteum taken from both trained and non-trained legs were measured using a video tracking system. Electrical field stimulation evoked a phasic constriction followed by a sustained dilatation in periosteal arterioles of trained legs, while triggering only vasoconstriction in the arterioles of non-trained legs. In trained leg arterioles, phentolamine, an α-adrenoceptor antagonist, inhibited both the constriction and dilatation. Prazosin, an α 1 -adrenoceptor antagonist, inhibited only the constriction, while yohimbine, α 2 -adrenoceptor antagonist, or l-nitro arginine (L-NA), a nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor, inhibited the dilatation. In non-trained leg arterioles, phentolamine or prazosin largely suppressed the constriction, but failed to unmask any dilatation. Consistently, noradrenaline (NAd)-induced arteriolar constriction was enhanced and prolonged by L-NA in trained but not non-trained side arterioles. Thus, NAd released from sympathetic nerves appears to activate endothelial α 2 -adrenoceptors to release NO resulting in the sustained dilatation of periosteum arterioles from trained leg. The altered sympathetic vasomotor function would facilitate the blood supply to the bone and may contribute to the exercise-induced bone strength gain., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. The periosteal arterioles of the compact bone may play a critical role in bone growth. To explore the contractile properties of tibial arterioles, spontaneous and nerve-evoked constrictions were compared in preparations from 3-week-old and 1-year-old guinea-pigs. Changes in arteriole diameters were measured using video microscopy. Their innervation was investigated using fluorescence immunohistochemistry. Fifty per cent and 40% of tibial arterioles from 3-week-old and 1-year-old guinea-pigs, respectively, exhibited spontaneous phasic constrictions that were inhibited by 1 μM nifedipine, 10 μM cyclopiazonic acid or 100 μM 2-APB. Nerve-evoked phasic constrictions in both age groups were largely suppressed by phentolamine (1 μM), an α-adrenoceptor antagonist, or sympathetic neurotransmitter depletion using guanethidine (10 μM) but were enhanced by spanttide (1 μM), a substance P receptor antagonist, or L-nitro arginine (L-NA; 100 μM), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Nerve-evoked constrictions in 1-year-old animals were smaller than those in younger animals but greatly enhanced by L-NA. Immunohistochemistry revealed sympathetic and substance P-positive primary afferent nerves running along the arterioles as well as endothelial NOS expression in both age groups. Spontaneous arteriolar constrictions appear to rely on both Ca 2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum and Ca 2+ influx through L-type Ca 2+ channels. Noradrenaline released from sympathetic nerves triggers arteriolar constriction, while substance P released from primary afferent nerves dilates the arterioles by releasing nitric oxide (NO), presumably from the endothelium. Thus, the enhanced endothelial NO release in adult guinea-pigs may be important to increase the blood supply to meet the increased metabolic demands during bone growth.

Background: The importance of the periosteum in fracture healing is well-known. Preserving periosteal vascularisation is essential during internal plate fixation of fractures., Methods: This was an experimental randomised, controlled animal study on nine sheep. Standard dynamic compression plate (DCP) and four different newly designed reefed plates, with different plate-bone contact surface areas and different reef directions, were fixated on to the tibia or radius. After two weeks the plates were removed and the underlying periosteum was analysed. Blood vessels were marked by immunohistochemical staining (CD31 and CD34), microphotographs were taken and blood vessels counted to calculate blood vessel density., Results: Median blood vessel density beneath the standard plate was significantly lower than in the intact periosteum (18.0 vs 27.7mm(3)/cm(3)). Blood vessel density in the periosteum beneath plates with reefs was significantly increased compared with the intact periosteum, and was highest beneath the plate with the lowest bone-plate contact area and crosswise reefs (51.5mm(3)/cm(3)), followed by plates with transverse, oblique and longitudinal reefs, respectively. The direction of the reefs did not have much influence on the periosteal capillary network. Lower contact surface area seems to be the main factor that increases blood vessel density beneath the plates., Conclusions: The results show that plates with lower contact surface area stimulate angiogenesis in the underlying periosteum, which results in much higher blood vessel density compared with standard DCP. Purpose: To compare tibial fracture healing in rats with or without soft-tissue attachment., Methods: The left tibias of 30 Wistar rats were osteotomised and equally randomised into 3 groups. In the avascular segmental fracture group, an 8-mm bone segment were first removed and then immediately put back. In the vascular segmental fracture group, the 8-mm bone segment was not displaced, with periosteal and muscular attachments. In the simple fracture group, a simple fracture in the middle tibia was made. All tibias were then stabilised with an intramedullary nail through the patellar tendon, and the wound was closed with sutures. After 8 weeks, all left tibias and 9 of the intact right tibias were harvested. Bone mineral content and density of the calluses were assessed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scanning. The maximum torsional strength, rigidity, and energy to failure of the tibias were measured., Results: All tibias healed (callus formation), without mal-union or pin migration. The 3 groups did not differ significantly in terms of torsional strength, rigidity, energy to failure, bone mineral content, and bone mineral density. The mean torsional strength of the 9 intact tibias was significantly higher than the healed tibias (14.9 vs. 10.6 Nmm, p=0.021)., Conclusion: Soft-tissue detachment from bone segments did not impair bone healing in rats.

Bone nonunion in the pediatric population usually occurs in the context of highly unfavorable biological conditions. Recently, the vascularized fibular periosteal flap has been reported as a very effective procedure for treating this condition. Even though a vascularized tibial periosteal graft (VTPG) was described long ago and has been successfully employed in one adult case, there has been no other report published on the use of this technique. We report on the use of VTPG, pedicled in the anterior tibial vessels, for the treatment of two complex pediatric bone nonunion case: a recalcitrant supracondylar femoral pseudarthrosis secondary to an infection in an 11-year-old girl, and a tibial nonunion secondary to a failed bone defect reconstruction in a 12-year-old girl. Rapid healing was obtained in both cases. Purpose: This study sought to confirm, through histologic evaluation, the vitality and viability of the island osteoperiosteal flap (i-flap) in a rabbit tibia model., Materials and Methods: In four rabbits, an osteotomy was performed on the tibial aspect of the right leg. A bone flap was raised, but the periosteal attachment was kept intact. The free-floating i-flap was separated from the rest of the bone by a silicone sheet. The rabbits were to be sacrificed after 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks and histologic samples examined., Results: All surgeries were accomplished successfully; however, three animals showed fractured tibiae within a few days after surgery and were sacrificed immediately after the fractures were discovered. The fourth rabbit was sacrificed at 4 weeks. Histologic specimens showed vital new bone in the i-flap area and signs of remodeling in the transition zone and the original basal bone., Conclusion: The i-flap remained vital. This suggests potential for use in bone augmentation strategies, particularly for the alveolar split procedure.

Background: Joints are privileged compartments that enjoy increased protection against the inflammatory reactions affecting the extremities. We hypothesized that the functional characteristics of the microvasculature would contribute to the differential defensive potential of the synovial membrane., Methods: We investigated the synovial microcirculatory reactions and compared them with those of the tibial periosteum in response to 60 min of total limb ischemia, followed by 180 min of ischemia-reperfusion (IR) in rats. Carrageenan/kaolin-induced knee monoarthritis, a neutrophil-driven synovial inflammation model, served as the positive control., Results: IR brought about a significant reduction in red blood cell velocity in the capillaries and increases in rolling and adherence of the neutrophil leukocytes in the postcapillary venules (intravital microscopy), in adhesion molecule expression (intercellular adhesion molecule-1 immunohistochemistry) and in xanthine oxidoreductase activity in the periosteum. These changes were also pronounced in carrageenan/kaolin-induced monoarthritis but were almost completely absent in the synovium after the IR challenge. Most importantly, even after IR and in carrageenan/kaolin monoarthritis, the synovial microcirculation was characterized by significantly greater red blood cell velocities than that in the periosteum under resting conditions., Conclusions: The ischemic duration, which significantly affected the functional integrity of the periosteal microcirculation, did not bring about a marked deterioration in that of the synovial membrane, suggesting that the synovial microcirculation is less endangered to the consequences of short-term tourniquet exposure than the periosteum. The greater microcirculatory red blood cell velocities and lower IR-induced endothelial expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 in the synovial membrane might explain the greater resistance of this compartment to the inflammatory consequences of IR., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Background: Intramedullary reaming and nailing of long bones impairs the endosteal circulation, often causing necrosis of the inner region of the bone cortex. We hypothesized that compensatory hypertrophy of the periosteal microcirculation may develop in response to mechanical destruction of the endosteum, and that this may affect bone survival in these circumstances. In these studies, nailing was performed with materials that affect regeneration of the endosteum differently, and the effects on the tibial periosteal microvasculatory organization were examined., Methods: In male Wistar rats, the right tibia was reamed and implanted with an inert titanium nail or a less osseointegrative polyethylene nail; the contralateral tibial endosteum was destroyed by reaming. Reaming without nailing or sham operation was performed on both extremities in two other groups of rats. Twelve weeks later, the anteromedial and anterolateral surfaces of the tibias were exposed by a microsurgical technique. The structural characteristics of the periosteal microcirculation (vessel density and distribution of vessel diameters) were determined by intravital videomicroscopy and computer-assisted analysis. The stability of the implants was assessed on the basis of grades 0-2 on a qualitative scale., Results: Tibial reaming alone caused significant increases in overall blood vessel and capillary densities in the periosteum compared with those of the intact tibias. Implantation with a titanium nail resulted in firm embedding of the nail and caused changes in the periosteal vasculature similar to those after reaming alone. In contrast, implantation of a polyethylene nail was followed by the development of marked instability of the endomedullary implant and significant increases in the percentage of capillaries and the vessel density in the periosteum., Conclusions: Destruction of the endosteal microcirculation per se brings about an increase in periosteal vascular density, which is further augmented if implantation is performed with a material which delays regeneration of the endosteal circulation.

Background: The role of vascularized periosteum flap as a graft and the factors stimulating it into osteogenic activity remain obscure. Few articles recognized its osteogenic process without the dependence of stress stimulation or bony contact., Methods: We analyzed the osteogenic capacity of the vascularized periosteum in an ectopic site via the method of histomorphologic assessment. Pedicled vascularized periosteum was taken from the proximal tibia in rabbits and transferred to the soft tissue pouch in the distal thigh. Specimen was harvested for osteogenesis assessment at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 16 weeks., Results: During macroscopic examination, all rabbits were dissected along the previous surgical wound in the distal femur. Dense osseous-like tissue was found in the prefabricated vascularized periosteum. The tissue sections showed red-mineralized matrix of Alizarin Red S staining increased neovascularization., Conclusions: The study results revealed the osteogenic capacity of prefabricating vascularized periosteum without the dependence of stress stimulation or its proximity to viable bone.

The vascular anatomy of the cortical bone and the canal system are highly correlated, and the former has an important bearing on shape and microscopic lamellar structure, as it is established in the progression of the remodelling process. The classical description of a longitudinal system of canals (Havers') connected by the transversal Volkmann's canals is the generally acknowledged model of the structural organization of the cortex. However, it is remarkably difficult to study the circulation inside the compact bone in detail owing to its hard, calcified matrix, and the methods thus far applied have represented either the bone morphology and the architecture of the canal system or the injected vessel network. In the present study, the intracortical vessel network was injected with black China ink and evidenced by transillumination of full-thickness, decalcified hemicortices. By making use of the depth of field of the microscope objective, the three-dimensional architecture of the network was highlighted and the morphometry of vessel size measurements and a classification of the network nodes according to the number of arms was made possible. These observations were integrated with data obtained by routine histology on decalcified sections relevant to the connections of the intracortical canal system with the outer environment, with regard to the direction of advancement of new canals and with regard to the mode of formation of the system nodes. The formation of the intracortical vessels network involved two processes: the incorporation of the periosteal network and osteonal remodelling, the latter occurring through the advancement of cutting cones followed by their own vascular loop and by concentric lamellar apposition. The two systems could be distinguished by the diameter of the vessels (the former were significantly larger) and by the network architecture (the former convoluted, and the latter longitudinally orientated and straight). Longitudinal vessels could form branches or create connections with the periosteal derived vessels that occasionally meet on the line of their advancement. They were observed entering from either inside the cortex from the metaphyses or from the endosteal surface of the marrow cavity. The combined observations from different methods of study documented a model of intracortical canal and vessel networks formed by two initially independent systems: one derived from the external, periosteal vessels, and one from metaphyseal and marrow vessels. Connections between the two were established with the advancing of cutting cones from the extremities of the diaphysis. Analysis of the system architecture and the modalities of its progressive organization suggested that the direction of advancement of a forming canal does not necessarily correspond to the final blood flow direction of its central vessel.

We previously demonstrated that the use of intermittent pneumatic soft tissue compression (IPC) treatment enhanced fracture healing in an animal model, but the exact mechanism remained unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the local and remote effects of IPC treatment on blood flow within the medullary canal and outside the periosteum of mid-tibial diaphysis. Blood flow was measured with a Laser Doppler blood flow meter in the lower limbs of 21 rabbits. Laser probes were inserted at three different sites of the mid-diaphysis on the right tibia: in the medullary canal (n = 21), outside the periosteum on the lateral side (n = 11), and outside the periosteum on the medial side (n = 10). IPC was applied for 30 min through cuffs that were placed around the feet and the lower part of the calf. While applying IPC to the left leg, no changes in blood flow occurred on the right leg (remote changes). However, while applying IPC to the right leg, significant localized changes were found on the right leg, including 47 and 89% increases in total amount of blood flow outside the lateral and medial periosteum, respectively. Although an altered blood flow pattern was observed in the medullary canal, no significant change in total amount of blood flow was observed at this level. In summary, the present study demonstrated that the use of IPC in an intact bone model results in a significant local increase in total blood flow, with minimal measurable effects on the contralateral limb., ((c) 2007 Orthopaedic Research Society. The feasibility of bone transport with bone substitute and the factors which are essential for a successful bone transport are unknown. We studied six groups of 12 Japanese white rabbits. Groups A to D received cylindrical autologous bone segments and groups E and F hydroxyapatite prostheses. The periosteum was preserved in group A so that its segments had a blood supply, cells, proteins and scaffold. Group B had no blood supply. Group C had proteins and scaffold and group D had only scaffold. Group E received hydroxyapatite loaded with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 and group F had hydroxyapatite alone. Distraction osteogenesis occurred in groups A to C and E which had osteo-conductive transport segments loaded with osteo-inductive proteins. We conclude that scaffold and proteins are essential for successful bone transport, and that bone substitute can be used to regenerate bone.

The etiology and the pathogenesis of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia (CPT) are still unknown. The affected tibia exhibits insufficient mechanical strength and osteogenetic capability. CPT is frequently associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1; von Recklinghausen's disease); however, both diseases have not yet been linked pathogenetically. This study presents the pathomorphologic findings of CPT under special consideration of NF1. Therefore, samples from patients operated on for CPT (n = 4) with (n = 3) and without (n = 1) neurofibromatosis were investigated by light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. The most striking finding in all patients was thickened periosteum with accumulation of nerval cells surrounding small arteries, causing subtotal or complete obliteration. In conclusion, impaired vascularization can result in decreased osteogenic capabilities. The similarity of ultrastructural findings in the abnormal periosteum and in skin neurofibromas of neurofibromatosis patients may indicate a pathogenetic association of both diseases.

Background and Aims: Bone devascularization due to impaired periosteal perfusion following fracture with severe soft tissue trauma has been proposed to precede and underlie perturbed bone healing. The extent and temporal relationship of periosteal microcirculatory deteriorations after severe closed soft tissue injury (CSTI) are not known. We hypothesized that periosteal microcirculation is adversely affected and the manifestation of trauma-initiated microvascular impairment in periosteum is substantially prolonged following CSTI., Material and Methods: Using the controlled-impact injury device, we induced standardized CSTI in the tibial compartment of 35 isoflurane-anesthetized rats. Following the trauma the rats were assigned to five groups, differing in time of analysis (2 h, 24 h, 48 h, 1 and 6 weeks). Non-injured rats served as controls. Before the metaphyseal/diaphyseal periosteum was surgically exposed, intramuscular pressure within tibial compartment was measured. Using intravital fluorescence microscopy (IVM) we studied the microcirculation of the tibial periosteum. We calculated the edema index (EI) by measuring the skeletal muscle wet-to-dry weight ratio (EI = injured limb/contralateral limb)., Results: Microvascular deteriorations of periosteal microhemodynamics caused by isolated CSTI were reflected by persistent decrease in nutritive perfusion, markedly prolonged increase in microvascular permeability associated with increasingly sustained leukocyte rolling and adherence throughout the entire study period, mostly pronounced 48 h after the trauma. Peak level in capillary leakage coincided with the maximum leukocyte adherence, tissue pressure, and edema. Microcirculation of tibial periosteum in control rats demonstrated a homogeneous perfusion with no capillary or endothelial dysfunction., Conclusion: Isolated CSTI in absence of a fracture exerts long-lasting disturbances in periosteal microcirculation, suggesting a delayed temporal profile in manifestation of CSTI-induced periosteal microvascular dysfunction and inflammation. These observations may have therapeutic implications in terms of preserving periosteal integrity and considering the interaction of skeletal muscle damage and periosteal microvascular injury during management of musculoskeletal trauma.

This scanning electron microscopic study examined the spatial and temporal features of proliferating vessels of regenerating bone tissue and blood supply during distraction osteogenesis. A rat model of tibial lengthening was used with a protocol divided into a latency period of 7 days, a distraction period that lasted 14 days with a daily distraction rate of 0.5 mm in two steps, and a consolidation period of 21 days. Vascular casting was done on the hindlimbs before osteotomy and on postoperative days 7, 14, 21, 28, and 42. Scanning electron microscopic findings were correlated with radiological and histological observations. On days 7 and 14, the proliferation of periosteal vessels was pronounced and there was distinct subperiosteal bone formation on the osteotomized surfaces. On day 21, vascular branches from the medullary canal of the host bone formed a vascular network, which gave rise to multiple axial, straight vascular branches, running parallel to the direction of distraction, toward the interzone, in accordance with the progress of mineralization. On day 28, the periosteum provided vascularization to the peripheral side of the interzone whereas the center of the interzone was still relatively avascular. On day 42, the periosteal and medullary vascular channels were completely connected at the distraction site including the interzone, which was occupied by developing and mature bone trabeculae. These results suggest that vascular proliferation occurs actively during the latency and distraction periods and then gradually decreases over time. A close temporal and spatial relationship exists between formation of regenerated bone and vascular proliferation of the periosteum and medullary canal.

The role of the periosteal and intraosseous blood supply to the femur and the proximal tibia was investigated to improve the operating technique for transplantation of allogenic vascularized femoral diaphyses and knee joints in humans. Altogether 48 limbs were injected with gelatin, red latex milk, or Revertex and macroscopically prepared; 41 limbs were studied for the variation and division of the truncus profundo-circumflexus. In 200 femurs and 200 tibias the location of the nutrient foramen was determined. The arteries supplying the periosteum of the distal femur and the proximal tibia have defined nutritive areas. The following technique should be followed: If the femoral artery alone is prepared as the vascular pedicle, the optimal section for resection of the femur in knee joint transplantations is 6 to 12 cm above the level of the femur condyles and 5 to 7 cm below the tibial plateau. For the transplantation of femoral diaphyses, the deep femoral artery can be used if the lateral femoral circumflex artery is protected. The Proximal line of resection is defined between the greater and lesser trochanter. For shorter grafts one must consider the number and location of nutrient foramens. For longer grafts the distal branches of the femoral artery must be respected as the intraosseous blood supply reaches distally down to the level of about 8 cm above the femoral condyles. In all these operations of the variation of the truncus profundo-circumflexus and the trifurcation of the popliteal artery must be considered.

In order to investigate the blood supply of osteo-periosteal flap of lateral inferior part of tibia, 40 lower limbs of adult cadavers were observed. The result showed that the superior malleolar branch was the biggest branch on the lateral inferior part of tibia and served as the main blood supply to the above area. It originated from the anterior tibial artery, 3.1 +/- 0.8 cm above the intermalleolar line. During its way to the anterior border of the tibia, it gave out the ascending and descending branches. The ascending branch was along the anterior border upward and anastomosed with the musculo-periosteol branch of the anterior tibial artery at the level of 6.3 +/- 1.3 cm above the intermalleolar line. The decending branch was anastomosed with the anterior medial malleolar artery. For the anastomosis between the superior malleolar branch with the peripheral vessels, the osteo-periosteol flap could be designed at the lateral side of the lower part of tibia in size of 8-10 cm x 4-6 cm. This was a new donor area of osteo-periosteol flap for repair of non-union of bone in lower end of tibia or arthrodesis of the ankle joint.

The tibial nutrient artery supplies 62% of cortical blood flow in the diaphysis and normal blood flow is centrifugal (Willans 1987). Intramedullary reaming destroys the nutrient artery and injures the endosteal surface of the cortex. Trueta (1974) suggested that the direction of blood flow can reverse from centrifugal to centripetal after loss of the endosteal supply. We examined this hypothesis by measuring cortical and periosteal blood flow after intramedullary reaming of the tibia in eight sheep, using 57Co radiolabelled microspheres. The unreamed contralateral tibiae served as a control group. Thirty minutes after reaming there was no significant change in cortical blood flow, but a sixfold increase in the periosteal flow. Our study confirms Trueta's hypothesis; after trauma or in other pathological states, flow can become centripetal.

Techniques of tissue exclusion have been used previously in qualitative investigations of the vascularity of long bones, after experimental fracture; we quantified their effects on bone blood flow in rabbits. Thirty-six adult rabbits were divided into three groups in which flow was measured, with the microsphere technique, 1 and 2 weeks after osteotomy. In Group 1, osteotomy of the tibial shaft only was done; in Group 2, osteotomy was done with exclusion of the periosteum and muscle by a silicone rubber sheath; and in Group 3, osteotomy was done with exclusion of the marrow by reaming and insertion of an intramedullary nail. All involved limbs were immobilized in a cast. In Group 1, cortical flow increased but marrow flow did not change, which suggests that the changes in cortical flow were mediated by a supply paralleling that of the marrow. In Group 2, the changes in cortical flow were abolished, which implies that this parallel supply is from the periosteum and extraosseous tissues. In Group 3, cortical flow was not significantly reduced, which demonstrates recruitment of this periosteal and extraosseous supply. These results lend support to the hypothesis that the blood supply to the healing diaphysis is principally from the periosteum and extraosseous tissues during the early peak period of blood flow.

The blood supply of the periosteum of the human tibia was investigated by anatomical dissection of 12 lower extremities which were filled with injection mass. By division of the tibia into 4 segments (proximal and distal fifths; proximal and distal diaphysis) a general supplying system of the periosteum was found. The proximal fifth of the tibial periosteum is nourished by branches of the arteriae recurrentes tibiales anterior et posterior and the aa. inferiores medialis et lateralis genus. At the proximal diaphysis (next three tenths of the tibia) periosteal branches arise from the aa. tibialis anterior and posterior, whereas the distal diaphysis is nourished exclusively by semicircular vessels of the a. tibialis anterior which twine around the bone and merge with each other at the facies medialis. Concerning the periosteal blood supply of the distal fifth of the tibia, two different types were found. In two thirds of the cases the lateral side was nourished by branches of the a. tibialis anterior, which are supported by vessels from the a. fibularis. In one third the latter branch was absent so that the rami periostales arising from the a. tibialis anterior nourished the lateral aspect of the distal tibia alone. The dorsal region was supplied in all cases by rami of the a. fibularis and a. tibialis posterior. On the medial side the periosteal nourishment is ensured only by anastomosis. Branches of the a. tibialis anterior supply the facies lateralis and facies posterior where it is supported by vessels of the a. tibialis posterior and in a minor region of rami of the a. fibularis (distal) and a. poplitea (proximal).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A study was undertaken to determine which arteries supply the periosteum of the normal adult canine tibia. The vessels were found to arise from locations distinct from the muscular vascularization. The venous drainage of the tibial periosteum had a satellite relationship with the arteries. On the surface of the periosteum, the vessels formed rectangular patterns. All surfaces of the distal end of the tibia seemed to have less distinct anastomoses of the transverse periosteal twigs, compared with the proximal end of the tibia.

In 24 sheep standardized holes were drilled into the tibia. These defects were filled differently with autologous cancellous bone: a) The defect was filled only with cancellous bone or b) it was filled like in (a) but additionally covered by a Milliporefilter layer; c) the defect was filled like in (a) but the bottom of the defect was covered by a Milliporefilter layer or d) it was filled like in (a) but the cancellous bone was sandwiched by Milliporefilter layers. Bine remodelling was adversely influenced by the Milliporefilters, but the inhibition in (b) was two times bigger than in (c).
