In a tokamak with a toroidal electric field, electrons that exceed the critical velocity are freely accelerated and can reach very high energies. These so-called `runaway electrons' can cause severe damage to the vacuum vessel and are a dangerous source of hard X-rays. Here the effect of toroidal electric and magnetic field changes on the characteristics of runaway electrons is reported. A possible technique for runaways diagnosis is the detection of hard X-ray radiation; for this purpose, a scintillator (NaI) was used. Because of the high loop voltage at the beginning of a plasma, this investigation was carried out on toroidal electric field changes in the first 5 ms interval from the beginning of the plasma. In addition, the toroidal magnetic field was monitored for the whole discharge time. The results indicate that with increasing toroidal electric field the mean energy of runaway electrons rises, and also an increase in the toroidal magnetic field can result in a decrease in intensity of magnetohydrodynamic oscillations which means that for both conditions more of these high-energy electrons will be generated. In this work the effects of Cold Biased Limiter (CBL) and Emissive Biased Limiter (EBL) have been individually investigated, in both positive and negative polarities, on the width and frequency of magnetic islands. The effects were examined using singular value decomposition and wavelet techniques on mirnov coil signals. The results show that the application of EBL with both positive and negative polarities has been more effective on plasma stability compared with CBL. Comparing different polarities of CBL and EBL revealed that the positive polarity was more effective on the width of magnetic islands than negative polarity. The greatest impact occurs during EBL with positive polarity, in which reduction is observed in both width of magnetic islands and emission of Hα radiation. Besides, intensity and frequency of magnetic islands are reduced from 50 to 25 kHz in around 1 ms after bias application. Meanwhile, the minimal effect on width and frequency of magnetic field occurs in CBL with negative polarity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The radial dependence of edge plasma turbulence is investigated in the IR-T1 tokamak. The radial profile of the fluctuation level and spectra are measured using an array of Langmuir probes (rake probe) in the r/a = 0.75-1.2 region. In all radial positions the edge plasma is turbulently unstable, with a broad band fluctuation spectrum in the frequency range f =10-1000 kHz. The relative fluctuation level, as monitored by the ion saturation current J+, is always highest near the wall and decreases monotonically toward the plasma center, while the shape of the fluctuation power spectra is almost unchanged. The result of this experiment shows that in contrast to the more inner regions, the plasma near the wall does not simply have a small density fluctuation about a mean, but rather a shredded structure in which one can imagine that discrete shreds of plasma interact with one another rather than with the average background. A structural change of perturbed magnetic configurations (such as magnetic islands) during disruption phase in IR-T1 tokamak was studied. The singular value decomposition (SVD) mode analysis and the (m,n) modes identification were presented. We also presented the SVD technique to analyze the tokamak magnetic fluctuations, time evolution of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) modes, spatial structure of each time vector, and the energy content of each modes. We also considered different scenarios for plasma from steady-state to predisruption, complete disruption, creation of tearing modes, and finally magnetic islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
