Benign cardiac hemangiomas are rare tumors that may present in or out side of the heart, epicardium being the most common site. Echocardiography is the method of choice in diagnosing cardiac masses and though 3D TEE may seem to add exact information about the location, the time constraint in doing a comprehensive examination along with 3D rendering inside operation room may become an hindrance., Competing Interests: None

Adrenal cavernous hemangiomas are a rare, benign, and non-functional tumor. We report a case of a 62-year-old male who presented with right upper quadrant and flank pain. Physical examination revealed a fullness of the right upper quadrant. Both computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging suggested a hemangioma originating from the liver. During angiography with the intent of embolization, it was discovered that the vascular supply was consistent with an adrenal mass rather than a hepatic origin. The patient was referred to Urology and underwent curative right open adrenalectomy and nephrectomy. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of an adrenal cavernous hemangioma.

Background: The cavernous hemangioma of mediastinum (CHM) is a rare benign lesion caused by congenital vascular dysplasia. However, its incidence is extremely low, and patients often lack relevant clinical symptoms. So we analyzed retrospectively some cases to investigate the imaging features of cavernous hemangioma of mediastinum (CHM) and improve the diagnostic accuracy., Methods: The CT/MRI imaging features and clinical information of 19 patients with CHM were analyzed retrospectively., Results: The lesions of 18 CHM patients were single. Twelve cases in the anterior mediastinum and 8 in the posterior mediastinum. The diameter of CHM ranges from 2.0 to 7.0 cm. Thirteen cases were oval-shaped or round, 4 cases were lobulated, and 2 cases were irregular. Phleboliths or nodular calcification were identified in four cases. High signal of T2WI lipid suppression in two cases and blood vessel shadows were observed in two cases. After contrast-enhanced scan, the nodular enhancement of arteries were identified in 14 cases and contrast agent was further filled of the venous phase, where "fast in and slow out" feature was performed. One case showed inhomogeneous enhancement, one case performed "fast in and slow out" feature of multiphase-enhanced MRI. Besides, aberrant veins can be seen in or around the lesion among five cases., Conclusions: CHM is more frequently located at the anterior mediastinum than at the posterior mediastinum. The performance of phleboliths, high signal on T2WI fat suppression and DWI, the nodular enhancement of the artery, venous and delayed phase filling, enhanced "fast in and slow out," and aberrant veins in the lesion are helpful for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Multiple period contrast-enhanced CT and MRI scan is helpful for the diagnosis of CHM.

Cavernous hemangiomas are the most common benign orbital tumors in the orbit, but radiological differentiation from other solitary orbital masses can still be challenging at times. While there have been previous studies describing the radiological characteristics of cavernous hemangiomas on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), there have not been any studies comparing the 2 imaging modalities. The purpose of our study was to evaluate CT and MRI findings of orbital cavernous hemangiomas and compare both modalities.We performed a cross-sectional study of patients with a histopathological diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma over a 20-year period from January 1997 to December 2016 in a single tertiary institution.Our study included 77 patients; mean age was 46.6 ± 11.2 years, and females comprised 68.8%. The lateral orbit (23.4%) was the most common location. The masses were well-defined, with 55.8% being ovoid, 27.3% round, and 16.9% lobulated. The most common enhancement pattern on CT was a small point starting in the periphery, progressing to heterogeneous filling in the late phase. The most common enhancement pattern on MRI was multiple patchy starting points, widespread across the tumor, with a final homogeneous filling in the late phase.Significant differences between CT and MRI were found in terms of area, location, and number of starting points of contrast enhancement in the early phase. We also found that the use of MRI is limited in differentiating fast-filling cavernous hemangiomas from other orbital tumors and in such cases, contrast-enhanced CT would be helpful.

Purpose: To investigate the very long-term (> 5 years) follow-up changes of hepatic cavernous hemangiomas and to evaluate possible determinant factors for the changes., Materials and Methods: Among 1115 consecutive patients suspected of having hepatic hemangiomas based on imaging features, 101 patients with comparable computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging data during a 5-year follow-up interval in the Picture Archiving and Communication System were analyzed. Two radiologists independently determined the largest dimension of each lesion on axial images. In addition to background liver fibrosis or steatosis on imaging, histories of use of chemotherapeutic agents were checked from the patients' records. The final size change of the hemangioma was categorized into three groups compared with the initial diameter (increased, > 120%; no change, 80-120%; decreased, < 80%)., Results: Among the 101 hemangiomas, 32 lesions (31.7%) were enlarged and 21 lesions (20.8%) were shrunken during intervals of 60-157 (median, 81) months. Younger patients showed a higher prevalence of lesion enlargement (mean age: enlarged, 47.3 years; no change, 52.8 years; shrunken, 57.1 years; p = 0.003). In 15 patients with cirrhosis, the lesions (shrunken, n = 7; enlarged, n = 1) showed a higher tendency of size decrease (p = 0.009), whereas other factors did not show statistical significance (p > 0.05). Only a minor proportion (1%, n = 1) of the lesions showed size fluctuation during follow-up., Conclusion: During the long-term (5-13 years) follow-up, about 50% of the hepatic hemangiomas were enlarged or shrunken to > 20% of the initial diameter. Aside from the cirrhosis and aging factors, the size changes seemed sporadic.

Background: Cavernous hemangiomas (CHs) of the adrenal gland are extremely rare. To date, only a few studies of adrenal CH imaging have been reported., Purpose: To analyze the computed tomography (CT) imaging findings of adrenal CHs., Material and Methods: Ten cases of adrenal CHs confirmed by a histopathological examination were retrospectively analyzed. All of the patients had undergone unenhanced and enhanced CT examinations, and eight had also undergone multiphase CT enhancement examinations. CT characteristics, including shape, size, margin, attenuation, and enhancement patterns, were analyzed., Results: The study included six women and four men with a mean age of 49.2 years (age range, 25-62 years) and no signs of abnormal endocrine activity. The unenhanced CTs showed well-defined, heterogeneous (n = 8) or homogeneous (n = 2) density masses with scattered (n = 8) or spread calcifications (n = 2) in six tumors. In the contrast-enhanced CTs, seven tumors appeared to be marked with heterogeneous enhancement, whereas three cases exhibited no obvious enhancement. The evaluation of the pattern of dynamic enhancement in eight patients revealed that the tumors showed early peripheral enhancement (n = 4), early central enhancement (n = 1), and mixed enhancement (n = 1) with progressive partial filling-in, and no obvious enhancement in any phases (n = 2)., Conclusion: Adrenal CHs should be included in the differential diagnosis when an adrenal neoplasm is incidentally found and appears as a well-defined, heterogeneous mass with calcifications and various enhancement patterns, including heterogeneous enhancement with characteristic progressive partial filling-in, as well as lack of enhancement in any phase., (© The Foundation Acta Radiologica 2015.)

Objective: To compare computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings between two histological types of nasal hemangiomas (cavernous hemangioma and capillary or lobular capillary hemangioma)., Materials and Methods: CT (n = 20; six pre-contrast; 20 post-enhancement) and MRI (n = 7) images from 23 patients (16 men and seven women; mean age, 43 years; range, 13-73 years) with a pathologically diagnosed nasal cavity hemangioma (17 capillary and lobular capillary hemangiomas and six cavernous hemangiomas) were reviewed, focusing on lesion location, size, origin, contour, enhancement pattern, attenuation or signal intensity (SI), and bony changes., Results: The 17 capillary and lobular hemangiomas averaged 13 mm (range, 4-37 mm) in size, and most (n = 13) were round. Fourteen capillary hemangiomas had marked or moderate early phase enhancement on CT, which dissipated during the delayed phase. Four capillary hemangiomas on MRI showed marked enhancement. Bony changes were usually not seen on CT or MRI (seen on five cases, 29.4%). Half of the lesions (2/4) had low SI on T1-weighted MRI images and heterogeneously high SI with signal voids on T2-weighted images. The six cavernous hemangiomas were larger than the capillary type (mean, 20.5 mm; range, 10-39 mm) and most had lobulating contours (n = 4), with characteristic enhancement patterns (three centripetal and three multifocal nodular), bony remodeling (n = 4, 66.7%), and mild to moderate heterogeneous enhancement during the early and delayed phases., Conclusion: CT and MRI findings are different between the two histological types of nasal hemangiomas, particularly in the enhancement pattern and size, which can assist in preoperative diagnosis and planning of surgical tumor excision.

Hepatic sinusoid plays a vital role in human cavernous hemangioma of the liver (CHL), and its morphologic investigation facilitates the understanding of microcirculation mechanism and pathological change of CHL. However, precise anatomical view of the hepatic sinusoid has been limited by the resolution and contrast available from existing imaging techniques. While liver biopsy has traditionally been the reliable method for the assessment of hepatic sinusoids, the invasiveness and sampling error are its inherent limitations. In this study, imaging of CHL samples was performed using in-line phase-contrast imaging (ILPCI) technique with synchrotron radiation. ILPCI allowed clear visualization of soft tissues and revealed structural details that were invisible to conventional radiography. Combining the computed tomography (CT) technique, ILPCI-CT was used to acquire the high-resolution micro-CT images of CHL, and three dimensional (3D) microstructures of hepatic sinusoids were provided for the morphologic depiction and quantitative assessment. Our study demonstrated that ILPCI-CT could substantially improve the radiographic contrast of CHL tissues in vitro with no contrast agent. ILPCI-CT yielded high-resolution micro-CT image of CHL sample at the micron scale, corresponding to information on actual structures revealed at histological section. The 3D visualization provided an excellent view of the hepatic sinusoid. The accurate view of individual hepatic sinusoid was achieved. The valuable morphological parameters of hepatic sinusoids, such as thrombi, diameters, surface areas and volumes, were measured. These parameters were of great importance in the evaluation of CHL, and they provided quantitative descriptors that characterized anatomical properties and pathological features of hepatic sinusoids. The results highlight the high degree of sensitivity of the ILPCI-CT technique and demonstrate the feasibility of accurate visualization of hepatic sinusoids. Moreover, there is a correlation between the CHL and the size or morphology of hepatic sinusoids, which offers a potential use in noninvasive study and analysis of CHL.

Hemangiomas mostly arise from the soft tissues, and intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon. They usually occur in the vertebra and skull bones, and intraosseous hemangioma of the nasal cavity is exceedingly rare. We describe a 56-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital with a tumor in her right nasal cavity, without subjective symptoms such as epistaxis. The tumor was located at the front end of the right middle turbinate. Enhanced computed tomography demonstrated a 3 cm×2cm expansive bony tumor replacing the bottom of the right middle turbinate with some partial enhancement effects. The characteristic honeycomb appearance was observed. The tumor and right middle turbinate were excised en bloc by the endoscopic endonasal approach. No complications or severe bleeding occurred during the peri-operative period. Histological examination showed endothelium-lined blood-filled vascular spaces within the bony trabeculae, which suggested the typical pattern of intraosseous cavernous hemangioma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of intraosseous cavernous hemangioma of the middle turbinate in the English literature., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Background: Cavernous hemangiomas are the most frequent neoplasms of the liver and in routine clinical practice they often need to be differentiated from malignant tumors and other benign focal lesions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of hepatic hemangiomas, showing atypical pattern on US, improves with the use of Gd-BOPTA in comparison with contrast-enhanced multi-phase computed tomography (CT)., Methods: 178 consecutive patients with ambiguous hepatic masses showing atypical hyperechoic pattern on grey-scale US, underwent unenhanced and contrast-enhanced multi-phase multi-detector CT and MR (1.5T) with the use of liver-specific contrast medium gadobenate dimeglumine (Gd-BOPTA). After intravenous contrast administration arterial (HAP), venous-portal (PVP), equilibrium phases (EP) both in CT and MR and additionally hepatobiliary phase (HBP) in MR were obtained. 398 lesions have been detected including 99 hemangiomas and 299 other lesions., Results: In non-enhanced MDCT examination detection of hemangiomas was characterized by sensitivity of 76%, specificity of 90%, PPV of 71%, NPV of 92% and accuracy of 86%.Non-enhanced MR examination showed sensitivity of 98%, specificity of 99%, PPV of 99%, NPV of 99% and accuracy of 99%.After intravenous administration of contrast medium in MR the mentioned above parameters did not increase significantly., Conclusion: Gd-BOPTA-enhanced MR in comparison with unenhanced MRI does not improve diagnostic accuracy in discriminating hemangiomas that show non-specific appearance in ultrasound examination. Unenhanced MR as a method of choice should directly follow US in course of diagnostic algorithm in differentiation of hemangiomas from other liver tumors.

Cavernous hemangiomas with shunt formations have been a recently recognized entity. Arterioportal (AP) shunts with cavernous hemangiomas have been described. However, a combination of AP and portosystemic (PS) shunts causing portal hypertension has not been previously demonstrated by computed tomography (CT) imaging. In this study, we report an atypical cavernous hemangioma associated with portal hypertension. Cavernous hemangioma with AP and PS shunts formations was precisely demonstrated with dynamic multidetector CT imaging.

Hepatic haemangiomas with fluid-fluid levels are known to be rare with only five cases reported in the English literature. According to the previous reports, the presence of fluid-fluid level could attribute to the separation of blood cells and serous fluid because of the extremely slow flow in cavernous haemangioma of the liver. We describe the imaging features of multiple hepatic haemangiomas with fluid-fluid levels, which was pathologically proven with ultrasonography guided biopsy.

The imaging features of rectal tumors on CT and MRI are reviewed. MRI is the imaging modality of choice for loco-regional staging, and may provide clues as to the histological nature of some tumors.

Standard nuclear medical procedures, such as functional, blood-pool and colloid scintigraphy, play a minor role in the routine workup of liver tumors. However, these techniques are capable of assessing specific organ functions and frequently allow the diagnosis of unclear liver lesions. The sensitivity of scintigraphic procedures can be increased using tomographic imaging (SPECT), the specificity with the introduction of hybrid scanners such as SPECT/CT. Whole body positron emission tomography with 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose (FDG) in combination with CT scanning (PET/CT) represents one of the most sensitive imaging modalities for the detection of hepatic metastases and extrahepatic tumor manifestations. For the staging and follow-up of colorectal cancer, FDG-PET/CT represents a standard imaging modality. Metastases from neuroendocrine tumors can be detected using PET and specific tracers such as [68Ga]DOTATOC and [18F]DOPA. Molecular imaging with PET allows the quantification of metabolic processes which can be used for the assessment of an early response to treatment.

The imaging features of an atypically enhanced hepatic hemangioma have not been well described in the literature, and the presence of such atypia may sometimes cause clinical problems in the differential diagnosis. Herein, we report a case of hepatic hemangioma demonstrating a previously unreported atypical enhancement pattern. On dynamic computed tomography during hepatic arteriography, a centrifugal enhancement pattern and subsequent peritumoral ring-shaped enhancement mimicking corona enhancement were found in cavernous hemangiomas of the liver in a 68-year-old Japanese man. Histopathological diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma of the liver was made on a biopsy specimen. Considering the importance of differentiating benign hepatic tumor from various forms of malignancy, radiologists and hepatologists should be aware of rare enhancement patterns sometimes seen in hepatic hemangioma. Establishing knowledge of the entire spectrum of atypical hepatic hemangioma may benefit the rational approach to future cases.

The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of dynamic computed tomography (CT) during selective angiography (CT-arteriography) of orbital tumors in the evaluation of intratumoral vascular anatomy, feeding artery territory, and histological diagnosis. Among 35 consecutive cases with various orbital lesions, those cases showing tumor staining or pooling of the contrast medium on digital subtraction angiography (DSA) were evaluated by CT-arteriography (n = 14). The information obtained by CT-arteriography was compared with that provided by enhanced MRI (n = 31) and dynamic MRI (n = 21), in which the contrast medium was injected intravenously. In addition to the visualization of fine vascular anatomy, CT-arteriography emphasized areas of nodular enhancement and non-enhancing cystic/necrotic components as well as the intratumoral feeding arteries. Patterns of CT-arteriography were categorized into three subgroups: homogeneous enhancement (benign lymphoid lesion), partial enhancement (schwannomas and carcinomas), and patchy multinodular enhancement (specific for cavernous angiomas). In addition, CT-arteriography with selective arterial catheterization clearly delineated the feeding artery territories. CT-arteriography, with a minimal dose of contrast medium, can offer significant advantages over intravenously injected dynamic neuroimaging, and provides additional valuable preoperative information about the orbital tumor under investigation.

Aim: To evaluate the value of multi-phasic CT arterial portography (CTAP) and CT hepatic arteriography (CTHA) in differential diagnosis of liver diseases, and to improve the specificity of CTAP and CTHA for liver cancer detection., Methods: From January 1999 to December 2002, multi-phasic CTAP and CTHA were performed in 20 patients with suspected liver disease. CT scanning was begun 25 s, 60 s and 120 s for the early-, late- and delayed-phase CTAP examinations, and 6 sec, 40 s and 120 s for the early-, late- and delayed-phase CTHA examinations respectively, after a transcatheter arterial injection of non-ionic contrast material. If a lesion was diagnosed as a liver cancer, transcatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization (TACE) treatment was performed, and the follow-up CT was performed three or four weeks later., Results: All eighteen HCCs in 12 cases were shown as nodular enhancement on early-phasic CTHA. The density of the whole tumor decreased rapidly on late and delayed phases, and the edge of 12 tumors (12/18) remained relatively hyperdense compared with the surrounding liver tissue, and demonstrated as rim enhancement. All HCCs were shown as perfusion defect nodules on multi-phasic CTAP. Five tumors (5/18) were shown as rim enhancement on delayed-phasic CTAP. Rim enhancement was shown as 1 to 2-mm-wide irregular, uneven and discontinuous circumferential enhancement at late-, and delayed-phase of CTHA or CTAP. Five pseudolesions and 4 hemoangiomas were found in multi-phasic CTAP and CTHA. No pseudolesions and hemoangiomas were shown as rim enhancement on late- or delayed-phasic CTHA and CTAP., Conclusion: Multi-phasic CTAP and CTHA could help to recognize the false-positive findings in CTAP and CTHA images, and improve the accuracy of CTAP and CTHA of liver cancer detection.

The incidence of intraosseous hemangiomas is very low. Most of them occur in adult females. The mandible,the zygoma,the maxilla, and the frontal and nasal bones are the areas of most frequent localization in the facial region. The intraosseous hemangioma is a benign, slowly growing,bony hard tumor causing facial deformity. It is diagnosed histologically. We report a case of an 18-year-old male with an intraosseous cavernous hemangioma located in the perpendicular lamina of the ethmoid bone. Intraosseous hemangioma often has characteristic signs on a CT scan, with either coarsened trabeculae lying adjacent to the vascular channels or multifocal lytic areas creating a honeycomb pattern. Because of the age of the patient we considered a midline granuloma and a chondrosarcoma. The therapy of choice is surgical excision; radiation is done in exceptional cases only.

Retraction of the liver capsule may be associated with a diverse spectrum of benign and malignant hepatic abnormalities. These include primary malignant neoplasms (epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma), secondary malignant neoplasms before and after treatment, and hepatic hemangioma, especially in cirrhotic livers. Other etiologies include confluent fibrosis in cirrhotic livers, chronic biliary obstruction (as can be seen in primary sclerosing cholangitis), and traumatic hepatic injury (iatrogenic and noniatrogenic). Because several recent studies have incorrectly reported hepatic capsular retraction as a specific sign of hepatic malignancy, it is important to understand the imaging appearances of the various etiologies associated with this sign to avoid misdiagnosis that may adversely affect the therapeutic approach.

Dynamic enhancing feature in mediastinal hemangioma was rarely reported. Slow, gradually increasing and prolonged contrast stains are the diagnostic hints in our case that avoid the hemorrhagic catastrophe from transthoracic core needle biopsy. A rare finding of an aberrant vessel entering into the tumor was valuable for operative planning. Dynamic computed tomography (CT) can provide more information for evaluation in such cases.

Objective: Addition of contrast dynamics to three-dimensional hepatic tumor CT imaging., Materials and Methods: Six patients with hepatic cavernous hemangioma with a mean age of 57 years were included in the study. Two of the patients were male and four were female. Contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) was carried out on the tumors in six phases by helical CT, using bolus injection of contrast medium intravenously. Using maximum intensity projection (MIP), a separate three-dimensional image was then reconstructed for each phase, and rotational images around the longitudinal axis of the torso were observed using the CRT monitor., Results: The patterns of contrast enhancement of hepatic cavernous hemangiomas were obtained on 3D-images. In all patients, the reciprocal relations between the tumor and the portal veins and the hepatic veins were clearly imaged three-dimensionally., Conclusions: We have succeeded in adding the dynamic observation of a contrast medium to static three-dimensional imaging. This will be valuable for the diagnosis of hepatic tumors, and it opens up new prospects for diagnostic imaging.

Dynamic sequential computed tomography (d-CT) was performed in 83 liver hemangiomas in 71 patients. In study group single lesions were present in 62 patients, 9 patients had two or more. In early phase (30-150 s) (79%) hemangiomas were peripherally hyperdense. In the delayed phase (2-7 min) 27% were totally hyperdense, 48% were isodense and 18% were of mixed density. We conclude that the contrast enhancement pattern of hemangiomas seen in dynamic computed tomography is useful in detecting and in differential diagnosis of these tumors.

Fluid-fluid levels were observed in a case of giant cavernous hemangioma on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The fluid-fluid level may be attributed to the separation of blood cells and serous fluid due to the extremely slow flow in cavernous hemangioma of the liver.

Purpose: To evaluate the MR and CT features of pediatric supratentorial intra-axial tumors with respect to differential diagnosis and the role of each investigation modality., Material and Methods: MR and CT findings in 40 children with 12 types of pathologically proven histological tumors were reviewed., Results: The location of tumors might be one clue to differential diagnosis. In our material, cysts (60%), calcifications (45%), and intratumoral hemorrhages (27%) were found in the tumors. Characteristic features noted in some lesions included: peritumoral hemosiderin deposition in cavernous angiomas; intratumoral flow void in a choroid plexus carcinoma and in glioblastomas; and hemicerebral atrophy in germinomas. A comparison between malignant and benign tumors showed perifocal edema and a mass effect to be significantly more common in malignant lesions. Homogeneous enhancement suggested a benign tumor and an inhomogeneous pattern represented malignancy, while the lack of obvious enhancement did not always suggest benignity. Intratumoral calcium deposition was a not uncommon finding in malignant tumors., Conclusion: In most cases, the exact diagnosis should be made by histological examination but it is important for treatment planning that the appropriate depiction of tumor extension and tissue characterization be made by MR and CT.

Purpose: To correlate the pathologic findings of cavernous hemangiomas with enhancement patterns seen at dynamic computed tomography (CT) performed after injection of contrast material., Materials and Methods: Sixteen patients underwent dynamic CT followed by hepatectomy. Resected specimens of 16 cavernous hemangiomas, which ranged from 2 to 15 cm in diameter, were obtained. The average size of vascular spaces in the histologic specimen was correlated with their appearance on dynamic CT scans., Results: In 11 tumors, characteristic progressive fill-in after peripheral contrast enhancement was seen (type 1). In type 1 tumors, three zones were noted within the tumor: areas of peripheral puddling in the arterial-dominant phase, areas of gradual fill-in, and areas of no or minimal enhancement. Vascular spaces in areas of peripheral global enhancement were significantly smaller than those in areas of gradual fill-in (P = .03). In areas of no or minimal enhancement, extensive scar tissue (n = 9) or cystic cavity (n = 3) was seen. In three hemangiomas smaller than 3 cm, enhancement occurred diffusely in the arterial-dominant phase and vascular space was small (type 2). In two tumors, enhancement was seen only in the periphery of the tumor (type 3), and the majority of tumor was occupied by the cystic cavity or scar tissue., Conclusion: Dynamic enhancement patterns of cavernous hemangiomas are related to the collective size of their constituent vascular spaces.

A case of haemangioma of the oesophagus is presented. The computed tomographic findings of an intramural mass with marked enhancement following intravenous contrast enable the diagnosis to be suggested pre-operatively.

CT scans showing a hyperattenuating rim within the liver were retrospectively evaluated in 10 patients to clarify the character, aetiology and clinical significance. All patients had hepatic tumours (7 cavernous haemangiomas in 6 patients, 3 metastatic tumours and 1 hepatocellular carcinoma) as well as fatty infiltration of the liver. Typical features of the hyperattenuating rim on noncontrast CT of the liver included (1) attenuation similar to that of the spleen, (2) a circular or semicircular shape, (3) a width of a few millimeters, (4) peritumoral localization and (5) loss of visualization with contrast enhancement. No such rims were noted around hepatic tumours unassociated with fatty infiltration. Peritumoral sparing of fatty infiltration was inferred. A hyperattenuating rim on noncontrast liver CT, although rare, suggests the presence of a hepatic tumour in fatty liver.

We present a case of cardiac hemangioma in a symptomatic patient. MR and CT each have specific characteristics that should make one consider including or excluding this in the differential diagnosis of a cardiac tumor.

The CT and MR appearance of giant cavernous hemangiomas can be confusing, and some atypical radiographic findings have been described. We report the CT and MR features of a giant cavernous hemangioma of the liver with atypical presentation. CT showed a large hypodense geographical lesion involving the majority of the liver and multiple scattered peripheral lesions. The T2-weighted MR images revealed a huge hyperintense lesion with multiple satellite nodules.

Purpose: Cavernous hemangiomas of the adrenal gland are rare, and we here describe CT and MR features of an additional case including delayed contrast CT., Results: On CT, the tumor appeared as a well-delineated mass. Fatty areas and calcifications were seen. On delayed contrast CT, a progressive enhancement from the periphery to the center of the tumor was noticed, similar to the contrast enhancement of liver hemangiomas. In T1-weighted MR images, a hypointense tumor with a central stellate area of hypointensity was found. The tumor had a predominantly peripheral contrast enhancement., Conclusion: CT and MR findings of adrenal hemangiomas are in some cases similar to those of liver hemangiomas. A tumor resection must be considered if the tumor changes in appearance or size.

We report a case of hepatic cavernous hemangioma with computed tomographic findings of well demarcated nodular lesser attenuation foci within the main low attenuation mass on precontrast scans and non-enhancement of the foci even on the delayed contrast scans. These have been described as one of the atypical findings of cavernous hemangioma earlier in the literature. Surgery proved that sclerosis accounted for the hypodense nodular densities within the hepatic cavernous hemangioma.

Purpose: To characterize the appearance of hemagiomas at two-phase dynamic incremental computed tomography (CT) and to determine the cause of contrast material enhancement of adjacent parenchyma in the first series., Materials and Methods: Contrast-enhanced CT images of 51 hemangiomas in 20 patients were reviewed. Enhancement patterns of hemangiomas in the first series were classified as homogeneous high, peripheral high, and low attenuation; in the second series, as homogeneous high, peripheral high, iso-, and low attenuation. Correlations between arterioportal shunts and early parenchymal enhancement were evaluated in 45 hemangiomas in the 17 patients who underwent angiography., Results: Thirty-two hemangiomas progressively became enhanced. Four had low and eight had homogeneous high attenuation in both series. Seven changed from homogeneous high to isoattenuation. Early parenchymal enhancement was well correlated with presence of arterioportal shunt., Conclusion: Low-attenuation hemangiomas and those that changed from homogeneous high to isoattenuation are atypical and difficult to differentiate from other neoplasms. Most early parenchymal enhancement is caused by associated arterioportal shunts.

Cavernous hemangiomas of the mediastinum, though unusual, have typically been described in the anterior or posterior mediastinum. We report such a tumor in the subcarinal region and describe the potential contribution of CT scanning in the work-up of these rare space-occupying lesions.

We report two cases of cavernous hemangioma originating in the sinonasal cavity. Although CT showed some enhancing areas within both tumors, the substantial bone destruction caused by these tumors made it difficult to differentiate them from the more common malignant epithelial tumors. Angiography was performed in one patient and showed characteristic pooling of contrast material.
