Electrical treeing is one of the main mechanisms of degradation in polymeric high voltage insulation, a precursor of power equipment failure. Electrical trees have been previously imaged mostly using two-dimensional imaging techniques; thereby loosing valuable information. Here we review the techniques that have been previously used and present the novel application of X-ray computed tomography (XCT) for electrical tree imaging. This non-destructive technique is able to reveal electrical trees, providing a threedimensional (3-D) view and therefore, a more complete representation of the phenomenon can be achieved. Moreover, taking virtual slices through the replica so created brings the possibility of internal exploration of the electrical tree, without the destruction of the specimen. Here, laboratory created electrical trees have been scanned using XCT with phase contrast enhancement, and 3-D virtual replicas created through which the trees are analyzed. Serial Block-Face scanning electron microscopy (SBFSEM) is shown to be a successful complementary technique. Computed tomography enables quantification of electrical tree characteristics that previously were not available. Characteristics such as the diameter and tortuosity of tree channels, as well as the overall tree volume can be calculated. Through the cross-section analysis, the progression of the number of tree channels and the area covered by them can be investigated. Using this approach it is expected that a better understanding of electrical treeing phenomenon will be developed. © 2014 IEEE.

Three contributions that can improve the performance of a Newton-type iterative quantitative microwave imaging algorithm in a biomedical context are proposed. (i) To speed up the iterative forward problem solution, we extrapolate the initial guess of the field from a few field solutions corresponding to previous source positions for the same complex permittivity (i.e., “marching on in source position”) as well as from a Born-type approximation that is computed from a field solution corresponding to one previous complex permittivity profile for the same source position. (ii) The regularized Gauss-Newton update system can be ill-conditioned; hence we propose to employ a two-level preconditioned iterative solution method. We apply the subspace preconditioned LSQR algorithm from Jacobsen et al. (2003) and we employ a 3D cosine basis. (iii) We propose a new constrained line search path in the Gauss-Newton optimization, which incorporates in a smooth manner lower and upper bounds on the object permittivity, such that these bounds never can be violated along the search path. Single-frequency reconstructions from bipolarized synthetic data are shown for various three-dimensional numerical biological phantoms, including a realistic breast phantom from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UWCEM) online repository.

SUMMARY Seismic traveltimes and amplitudes in reflection-seismic data show different dependences on the geometry of reflection interfaces, and on the variation of interval velocities. These dependences are revealed by eigenanalysis of the Hessian matrix, defined in terms of the Frechet matrix and its adjoint associated with different norms chosen in the model space. The eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the Hessian clearly show that for reflection tomographic inversion, traveltime and amplitude data contain complementary information. Both for reflector-geometry and for interval-velocity variations, the traveltimes are sensitive to the model components with small wavenumbers, whereas the amplitudes are more sensitive to the components with high wavenumbers. The model resolution matrices, after the rejection of eigenvectors corresponding to small eigenvalues, give us some insight into how the addition of amplitude information could potentially contribute to the recovery of physical parameters. In order to cooperatively invert seismic traveltimes and amplitudes simultaneously, we propose an empirical definition of the data covariance matrix which balances the relative sensitivities of different types of data. We investigate the cooperative use of both data types for, separately, interface-geometry and 2-D interval-velocity variations. In both cases we find that cooperative inversions can provide better solutions than those using traveltimes alone. The potential benefit of including amplitude-data constraints in seismic-reflection traveltime tomography is therefore that it may be possible to resolve the known ambiguity between the reflector-depth uncertainty and the interval-velocity uncertainty better.

First arrival traveltime tomography aims at inferring a seismic wave propagation velocity model from first arrival traveltimes picked on seismograms. The velocity model inferred can be used directly to perform a structural interpretation of the subsurface or as an initial model for another seismic imaging method. This technique can be applied at different scales from geotechnical studies to seismology through oil exploration. The geophysicist know-how plays an important role in the difficult resolution of the nonlinear and ill-posed tomographic problem. Numerous studies have tried to ease and improve this resolution considering a physical or mathematical approach. Within the scope of this work, we wish to develop a pragmatic approach, i.e. we consider that the tomographic problem should be solved using an interactive algorithm whose tuning parameters are clearly identified. The interactive aspect of the algorithm facilitates the acquisition of the tomographic know-how because it allows performing, within a reasonable time, many simulations for different kinds of parameterization. The goal pursued in this work is the definition of a first arrival traveltime tomography algorithm that fulfills these specifications at best. Conventional first arrival traveltime tomography algorithms do not match our criteria of a pragmatic approach. Indeed, their implementation hardly takes benefit of the parallel architecture of current supercomputers in order to reduce the computation times. Moreover, their practical application implies a complex parameterization due to the resolution of the linear tomographic system. All these practical limitations issue from the original formulation of the algorithm based on a Gauss-Newton minimization method. The idea developed in this work is to formulate the resolution of the tomographic problem using a steepest descent method to overcome all these limitations. The key step of this formulation is the computation of the gradient of the misfit function with respect to the model parameters. We use the adjoint state method and a method based on an a posteriori ray tracing to compute this gradient. These two methods differ from their formulation, respectively nonlinear and linearized, and their implementation. Then, we clearly define the parameterization of the new algorithm and validate on a supercomputer its practical properties that are: a direct and efficient parallelization, a memory requirement independent of the amount of input data and a straightforward implementation. Finally, in order to validate the tomographic behaviour of this new algorithm, in terms of obtained results and stability, we present tomography results for 2-D and 3-D, synthetics and real, marine and land, seismic refraction acquisitions. A great number of simulations have been carried out thanks to the fast execution time of the algorithm, typically few minutes for 2-D simulations.; La tomographie des temps de première arrivée cherche à estimer un modèle de vitesse de propagation des ondes sismiques à partir des temps de première arrivée pointés sur les sismogrammes. Le but poursuivi dans cette thèse est de définir, pour le cas spécifique de la tomographie des temps de première arrivée, un algorithme qui réponde au mieux à ces critères. Les algorithmes de tomographie des temps de première arrivée classiquement mis en oeuvre aujourd'hui ne répondent pas à nos critères d'une approche pragmatique. En effet, leur implémentation ne permet pas d'exploiter l'architecture parallèle des supercalculateurs actuels pour réduire les temps de calcul. De plus, leur mise en oeuvre nécessite une paramétrisation rendue complexe du fait de la résolution du système linéaire tomographique. Toutes ces limitations pratiques sont liées à la formulation même de l'algorithme à partir de la méthode de Gauss- Newton. Cette thèse repose sur l'idée de formuler la résolution du problème tomographique à partir de la méthode de plus grande descente pour s'affranchir de ces limitations. L'étape clé de cette formulation réside dans le calcul du gradient de la fonction coût par rapport aux paramètres du modèle. Nous utilisons la méthode de l'état adjoint et une méthode définie à partir d'un tracé de rais a posteriori pour calculer ce gradient. Ces deux méthodes se distinguent par leur formulation, respectivement non-linéaire et linéarisée, et par leur mise en oeuvre pratique. Nous définissons ensuite clairement la paramétrisation du nouvel algorithme de tomographie et validons sur un supercalculateur ses propriétés pratiques : une parallélisation directe et efficace, une occupation mémoire indépendante du nombre de données observées et une mise en œuvre simple. Finalement, nous présentons des résultats de tomographie pour des acquisitions de type sismique réfraction, 2-D et 3-D, synthétiques et réelles, marines et terrestres, qui valident le bon comportement de l'algorithme, en termes de résultats obtenus et de stabilité. La réalisation d'un grand nombre de simulations a été rendue possible par la rapidité d'exécution de l'algorithme, de l'ordre de quelques minutes en 2-D.

Congenital tracheal stenosis is a rare disorder, characterized by the presence of focal or diffuse complete tracheal cartilage rings, resulting in a fixed tracheal narrowing. The entity may be seen in isolation or in conjunction with other malformations that include an anomalous right upper lobe bronchus. We here report the case of a 12-month-old girl who had severe bi-segmental congenital tracheal stenosis with the interposition of a tracheal bronchus between the two stenotic segments.

SUMMARY Inclusion of amplitude data in reflection seismic tomography may help to resolve the ambiguity caused in the traveltime inversion by the trade-off between reflector position and velocity anomaly. To illustrate the uses of amplitude data we initially exclude all traveltime information from the inversion. In a previous paper (Wang & Houseman 1994) we have shown, using geologically relevant synthetic models, that the information contained in amplitude versus offset data suffices to accurately constrain the geometry of an arbitrary smooth 2-D reflector separating constant velocity layers. In this paper we investigate the implementation of the inversion for 2-D velocity variations using reflection seismic amplitude data. A stable method of ray tracing in a 3-D heterogeneous velocity medium is presented. The ray-geometric spreading which partly determines the ray amplitude is then calculated according to the propagator along the ray path. The ray-perturbation theory is used to trace the perturbed ray due to the model perturbation. We compare amplitude perturbations arising from slowness perturbations along the whole ray path with those arising from the slowness perturbation close to the interface, and see that in an inversion of reflection seismic amplitude data, the data residuals will have most effect on velocity anomalies near the interface. Synthetic models are used to demonstrate the efficacy of amplitude inversion for velocity variation, using the subspace inversion method, with a 2-D Fourier series parametrization of the slowness distribution. The efficiency of the inversion lies in a judicious partitioning of model parameters into subspaces. A stable strategy for the parameter partitioning is to separate parameters on the basis of the magnitude of rms values of the Frechet derivatives of ray amplitudes with respect to the model parameters. Numerical examples show that the amplitudes of reflected signals are sensitive to the location of the velocity anomalies. Inversions provide an approximate image of velocity variation, demonstrating that amplitude data contain information that can constrain unknown velocity variation.
