Introduction: The aims of this study were to investigate the eruption pattern of maxillary permanent canines in the alveolar cleft area after secondary alveolar bone grafting and to assess the risk indicators for canine impaction., Methods: The sample consisted of 75 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate who underwent secondary alveolar bone grafting with rhBMP-2 with a mean age of 9.8 years of age at 1 center. A split-mouth study design was used, with the noncleft hemiarch comprising the control group. Panoramic radiographs taken before, immediately after, and 1 year after secondary alveolar bone grafting were used to assess the following parameters in both cleft side (CS) and noncleft side: canine mesiodistal angulation, canine height relative to the occlusal plane, canine mesial displacement, and superimposition with the neighboring maxillary incisors. The frequency of associated dental anomalies was compared between patients with and without CS canine impaction. Data were evaluated using analysis of variance, t tests, Fisher tests, and multiple logistic regression analysis (P <0.05)., Results: On the CS, maxillary canines were usually more mesially angulated and more distant from the occlusal plane compared with the noncleft side. The prevalences of canine impaction on the CS and noncleft side were 24% and 1.3%, respectively. Maxillary impacted canines on the CS demonstrated increased mesiodistal angulation and height at all time points. No association between CS canine impaction and mesial displacement (sectors) was found. An increased prevalence of lateral incisor agenesis on the CS was observed in the subgroup with canine impaction., Conclusions: Increased mesial angulation and lateral incisor agenesis on the CS are early risk indicators for maxillary canine impaction in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate., (Copyright © 2018 American Association of Orthodontists. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of potentially ectopic maxillary canines and associated dental features in a group of 11- to 14-year-old children., Participants: Examination took place of a normal dlistribution of Irish schoolchildren age between I11 and 14 years in order to record the number of subjects with indications for radiographic investigation of . potentially ectopic maxillary canines., Methods: Those subjects identified subsequently underwent radiographic examination and the number of subjects with potentially ectopic maxillary canines was established. Correlations within the latter sub-sample with anomalous or missing laterals, type of occlusion and female:male ratio were investigated., Results: A total of 480 children were screened. Of the children aged 11 to 14 years, 32 (6.6%) had clinical indications for radiographic examination of potentially ectopic maxillary canines according to the criteria that had been set out. There were 11 maxillary canines, in 10 subjects, that had an unfavourable position for eruption and were considered to be potentially ectopic, and so 1.1% of the maxillary canines reviewed in this study showed a potential ectopic eruption position., Conclusions: The prevalence of potentially ectopic maxillary canines and associated dental features in an Irish population was found to be similar to those in other countries, and the practice of careful supervision and early diagnosis of any eruption disturbances of the permanent maxillary canines continues to be considered important due to the risks associated with their eruption.

Background: To evaluate disturbances in primary tooth eruption and their management with nonpharmacological remedies., Methods: In this nonrandomized clinical trial, 270 children aged between 8 and 36 months were selected and divided into 5 groups with 54 children initially enrolled in each group. The children were seen during an 8-day period during tooth eruption. At each appointment data were recorded from oral examination, tympanic temperature measurement and a questionnaire. The five methods used as remedies to reduce teething symptoms were: 1) cuddle therapy, 2) ice, 3) rubbing the gums, 4) teething rings and 5) food for chewing. Teething symptoms, the type of erupted tooth, symptoms of recovery and the mother's satisfaction with treatment were evaluated., Results: Two hundred and fifty four children (mean age 16 ± 7.2 months) completed the study. The most frequent teething symptoms were drooling (92%), sleep disturbances (82.3%) and irritability (75.6%). These symptoms were more pronounced in low birth weight children (p > 0.05). Canine eruption led to more loss of appetite than incisor (p = 0.033) or molars eruption (p = 0.014). Low grade increases in body temperature were observed only on the day of eruption (36.70 ± 0.39 °C), when body temperature was significantly different compared to the day before and the day after eruption (both p < 0.001). There was no significant correlation between fever as reported by mothers and temperature readings obtained by the investigators. The most favorable results for time to recovery and the mother's satisfaction were seen when teething rings were used, followed by cuddle therapy and rubbing the gums., Conclusions: There was no association between teething and symptoms such as fever or diarrhea. Low birth weight children may have more teething symptoms. Teething rings, cuddle therapy and rubbing the gums were the most effective methods to reduce symptoms., Trial Registration: Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials: code IRCT201211127402N3.

The position of the permanent maxillary canine at the angle of the mouth is strategically significant in maintaining the harmony and symmetry of the occlusal relationship. However, the maxillary canine is the second most frequently impacted tooth, with prevalence reported to be between 1% and 2%. Moreover, treatment of this condition is often complex and involves substantial time and financial cost. Hence, it is only prudent to monitor the eruption and identify the etiological factors that lead to impaction of the maxillary canine. Numerous researchers have tried to identify specific and nonspecific etiological factors responsible for displacement of canines. The purpose of this review was to track the development processes of maxillary canines and determine the hindrances that affect the eruption at different ages. Awareness of the eruption process and etiology of noneruption will help to reduce the incidence of impacted canines by allowing for early recognition and interceptive treatment., (© 2013 Wiley Publishing Asia Pty Ltd.)

The aim of this study is to explore the effect of prenatal androgenization on the clinical eruption of permanent teeth expressing dimorphism and bimaturism. The eruption curves of permanent teeth (except third molars), including those that make up the canine complex (permanent canines, lower first premolars), are compared among opposite sex twins (OS twins) relative to single-born boys and girls. The comparisons are made with regard to three phases of eruption (pierced mucosa, half- erupted, and completely erupted) from a cross-sectional sample of dental casts, using Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox regression analyzes. The casts were collected from 2159 school children from the US Collaborative Perinatal Project, including 39 pairs of OS-twins, of which 12 pairs (30.8%) were Euro-Americans and 27 pairs (69.2%) were of African-American ancestry. The eruption patterns of the incisors, upper first molars, and lower canines were found to be significantly masculinized (delayed) among OS twin girls. The differences in most other teeth were either not significant, or the number of observations of active eruption phases were too few, such as in the upper first molars and incisors, to yield strong evidence and meaningful results. The masculinization of the tooth eruption pattern in OS twin girls is intriguing because of the lower canine responses during puberty, as well as canine primordial formation during early fetal androgenization of their co-twin during the 8th to 14th gestational weeks. The present results offer a challenge for future research exploring tooth eruption mechanisms, and may also highlight some cases of delayed or ectopic canines, which are biased toward females., (Copyright © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Objective: To evaluate the timing of spontaneous maxillary canine eruption in relation to stages of mandibular second molar maturation. Potential confounding effects from such factors as age, growth phase, and facial features were also explored., Subjects and Methods: A sample of 106 healthy subjects (48 females and 58 males; age range, 9.4-14.3 years) with both permanent maxillary canines during the final phase of intraoral eruption were included. Mandibular second molar maturation (stages E to H) was assessed according to the method of Demirjian. Skeletal maturity was determined using the cervical vertebral maturational (CVM) method. Facial vertical and sagittal relationships were evaluated by recording the Sella-Nasion/mandibular plane (SN/MP) angle and the ANB angle. An ordered multiple logistic regression was run to evaluate adjusted correlation of each parameter with the mandibular second molar maturational stage., Results: Overall, the prevalence of the different second molar maturational stages was 36.8%, 37.8%, and 27.4% for stages E, F and G, respectively. According to the regression model, this relation was not influenced by sex, CVM stage, SN/MP angle, and ANB angle., Conclusions: Irrespective of sex, growth phase, and facial features, the maturational stage of the mandibular second molar may be a reliable indicator for the timing of spontaneous eruption of the maxillary canine.

Aim: This was to investigate permanent teeth emergence in children and teenagers of Madrid (Spain) and to compare the data with those reported in the literature., Study Design: cross-sectional descriptive study. This study comprises data from 752 children and adolescents in Madrid (Spain). Sex, age and present permanent teeth were recorded., Results: In our study permanent teeth eruption occurred between 6.99 and 12.45 years in girls and between 7.06 and 12.81 years in boys. Overall we found no statistically significant differences in the timing of emergence between homologous contralateral teeth, however we noted that the lower arch teeth erupt before those of the upper arch and the eruption of permanent teeth occurs earlier in girls than in boys. The sequence of tooth eruption differed in both jaws but was the same in both sexes., Conclusion: Clinical examination of teeth is a simple tool to calculate tooth eruption intervals. These findings in a Spanish population are relevant for different dental setting and should be periodically reconfirmed.

Aim: The purpose of the present study was to establish the relationship between the eruption of permanent maxillary canines and cervical vertebral maturation stages (CVMs) to assess an alternative method for determining time of canine eruption in the late mixed dentition., Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty subjects with erupting permanent maxillary canines were observed both intraorally and radiographically with orthopantamograms. Lateral cephalograms were recorded to divide subjects according to CVM stage into prepeak (CS1 and CS2), peak (CS3 and CS4) and postpeak (CS5 and CS6) groups of puberty., Statistical Analysis: The differences between the prevalence rates of canine eruption in different groups of puberty were estimated using 'z test'., Results: Prepeak group comprised of forty six subjects, peak group sixty eight subjects and postpeak group six subjects. The differences in prevalence rates between peak and prepeak and between peak and postpeak groups were noticed highly significant (p<0.001), while prevalence rates between peak and postpeak was found less significant ( p0 <0.01)., Conclusion: Eruption of the permanent maxillary canine can occur at any CVM stage till end of the puberty or after puberty (CS1-CS6). Thus, an absence of maxillary canine during or after postpeak stage of puberty (CS5 or CS6) suggests delayed eruption and canine impaction.

Objectives: To report robust and contemporary estimates of permanent teeth emergence ages in children of Māori, Pasifika, Chinese, Indian and European ethnic origin in the Auckland region., Design: A stratified, two-stage cross-sectional study. Strata were defined by school decile status. Schools defined the first-stage sampling unit, and students the second stage., Setting: Invitations and consent forms were distributed to eligible participants at school for completion at home. Participants were examined at school-based clinics or in a mobile clinic. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, AND METHODS: Children aged between 5 and 13 years enrolled within the Auckland Regional Dental Service. Schools were randomly selected and then all students within selected schools were invited to participate. Eligible participants completing a consent form had an additional tooth assessment that complemented their routine dental examination. A generalised gamma failure-time model was employed to estimate permanent tooth eruption ages., Main Outcome Measures: Visually based assessment of permanent tooth emergence., Results: Overall, 3,466 children participated. Differences in median permanent tooth emergence ages were seen among ethnic groups and sexes (P < or = 0.01). Pasifika children had earlier median eruption time than sex-matched Māori children, who (in turn) were more advanced than sex-matched European children. Median eruption age occurred earlier in girls than boys for all permanent teeth., Conclusions: Despite known demographic, geographic and ethnic differences, estimates of permanent teeth emergence timing widely used in New Zealand are based on historical overseas populations. The presented estimates provide new standards and may be more appropriate for dental therapists and dentists when assessing permanent teeth emergence in New Zealand children.

Systemic and local factors can modify the eruption time of teeth. Generalized eruption time changes could be due to some systemic diseases like hyperthyroidism, hypophosphatasia, precocious puberty, Proteus syndrome, etc. Localized early eruption of permanent teeth could be due to early extraction of deciduous teeth. Presented here is an extremely rare case of early eruption of permanent canines in a 7-year old female child. Though the number of such cases is very limited, the clinician should poses adequate knowledge and keeps an open eye to identify such cases.

Aim: To study the eruption pattern of permanent teeth excluding third molars in school children of Mysore, South India., Objectives: To compare the eruption times determined with previous studies. To determine range of variation of the eruption time of each tooth and evaluate if any preponderance exists in the eruption timings of maxillary and mandibular teeth and between boys and girls., Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross sectional study. A random sample of 5007 school children in the age group of 5-14 years was selected. The mean age of eruption of individual permanent teeth was recorded and results were analyzed using Probit analysis., Results: The study population included 2371 boys constituting 47.26% and 2636 girls constituting 52.65% of the total sample. In the age group of 5 years, one of the permanent teeth was found to be erupted. In the age group of 14 years, all the permanent teeth except third molar had erupted. Girls showed early tooth eruption compared to boys. Mandibular teeth erupted earlier than maxillary teeth in both the sexes. Right and left sided teeth erupted at the same time in both the arches., Conclusion: The mean ages of eruption obtained from the present study are strikingly comparable with those of other investigators in different populations across the world. Since the current study involves a large sample of children, the data reported in this study could be used as standards when assessing permanent tooth eruption in Indian children.

Objective: To determine the ages of emergence of permanent teeth of Caucasian children of the Colchester area of the UK., Methods: Emergence data for all permanent teeth except third molars was collected from 12,395 children between four and 15 years of age, in the Colchester area of the UK between April 1998 and July 2001. A simple, robust, easy-to-follow experimental protocol was devised to provide reliable data collection., Results: The ages of emergence of the permanent teeth in this study which covered the period 1998-2001 in this Colchester population are later than earlier studies conducted throughout the twentieth century., Conclusion: If confirmed, the results of this study would suggest that contemporary children's dental development is retarded which may have implications for their general health. The type of study reported here may have long-term value in rapidly identifying trends in children's development of public health importance.

Background: Information on the timing and sequence of human tooth emergence is valuable when analysing human growth and development, predicting the age of individuals, and for understanding the effects of genetic and environmental influences on growth processes. This paper provides updated data on the timing and sequence of primary tooth emergence in Australian children for both clinicians and researchers., Methods: Twins were recruited from around Australia with data collected through parental recording of twins' primary tooth emergence. One twin from each pair was then randomly selected to enable the calculation of descriptive statistics for timing, sequence and asymmetry in tooth emergence., Results: The first and last primary teeth emerged, on average, at 8.6 months and 27.9 months, respectively, with teeth emerging in the order: central incisor, lateral incisor, first molar, canine, second molar. Left-side antimeric teeth were more likely to emerge before their right-side counterparts but this was not statistically significant. At least 35% of all antimeric pairs had emerged within two weeks of each other, serving as a useful guideline for assessing symmetrical versus asymmetrical development., Conclusions: Primary tooth emergence in Australian twins is occurring later than reported previously for Australian singletons but is consistent with findings for singletons in other ethnic groups. The most common sequence of primary tooth emergence appears to be consistent in twins and singletons and has not changed over time.

Objective: To evaluate the eruption path of the permanent maxillary canine during a 1-year period after secondary alveolar bone grafting and to (1) compare the canine eruption path on the cleft and noncleft side, (2) examine the number of congenially missing lateral incisors and the rate of canine impaction, and (3) examine the relationship between the eruption status of the canine and timing of alveolar bone grafting relative to age and canine root development using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT)., Methods: Cone beam computed tomography scans for 17 nonsyndromic unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), and four bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) consecutive cases of alveolar bone grafting surgery were obtained after orthodontic expansion and before alveolar bone grafting and at least 1 year postsurgery on the Hitachi MercuRay CBCT machine. The DICOM files were imported into Dolphin 3D Imaging 10.5 and reoriented for consistency. The X, Y, and Z coordinates were determined for the canine cusp tip and root tip on both the cleft and noncleft sides. The direction of movement of the canine in 1 year was determined., Results: Most canines on both the cleft and noncleft sides moved incisally, facially, and mesially. Twelve percent of the canines on the cleft side appeared to require surgical exposure. Eighty percent of the canines had less than half root development at the time of bone grafting. The amount of root development did not affect the outcome in terms of eruption amount or direction., Conclusions: Most canines on both the cleft and noncleft side moved incisally, facially, and mesially.

A dentigerous cyst is the most common developmental odontogenic cyst. It is a benign and asymptomatic intraosseous lesion that affects the bones of the maxillofacial complex, interfering with tooth eruption. This article reports the spontaneous eruption of a canine after marsupialization of an infected dentigerous cyst and extraction of the deciduous teeth. A radiograph showed a large cyst with a radiolucent area involving the mandibular left deciduous canine and first molar, and the permanent canine and first premolar. Although enucleation is the treatment of choice, marsupialization is the best option for large cysts involving an unerupted permanent tooth, as in this case. The patient was followed for 1 year, and eruption of the permanent canine and first premolar and gradual reduction of the radiolucent area were observed., (Copyright (c) 2010 American Association of Orthodontists. Introduction: Few studies have investigated developmental norms for maxillary permanent canine eruption. In this observational cross-sectional study, we aimed to provide an age-related description of the percentiles relative to canine inclination in a large sample of nonorthodontic patients. Associations between inclination and sector were also analyzed., Methods: Canine inclination and sector location were measured on 1020 panoramic radiographs obtained from subjects of white ancestry aged between 8 and 11 years not seeking orthodontic treatment. The total sample comprised 2037 canines., Results: Canine inclination increases between 8 and 9 years and decreases between 9 and 11 years. The greatest value for each percentile is at 9 years. A linear model should be hypothesized for differences in canine inclination between 2 successive ages in correspondence to each percentile. The proportion of sector 2 canines decreases and that of sector 1 increases with age. In the same age group, the inclination generally decreases as the sector decreases., Conclusions: Percentiles by age show the average canine inclination in a certain population. Further studies are required to verify whether percentiles can be a diagnostic aid for determining normal canine inclination at a given age and for quantifying the risk of canine impaction or adjacent root resorption.

Introduction: Our aim in this study was to assess the relationship between the eruption of the permanent maxillary canines and skeletal maturity in subjects with different skeletal relationships in the sagittal and vertical planes., Methods: A sample of 152 subjects (63 boys, 89 girls) with erupting permanent maxillary canines was analyzed. On the lateral cephalograms, the stage of cervical vertebral maturation was assessed. Then the subjects were divided into prepeak (before the pubertal growth spurt, cervical stage [CS]1 and CS2), peak (during the pubertal growth spurt, CS3 and CS4), and postpeak (after the pubertal growth spurt, CS5 and CS6) groups. Skeletal relationships in the sagittal and vertical planes were evaluated, and relationships to timing of canine eruption were tested statistically., Results: The prepeak group comprised 86 subjects, the peak group 66 subjects, and the postpeak group 0 subjects. The differences in prevalence rates between either the prepeak or peak groups and the postpeak group were statistically significant (P < 0.001). The prevalence rate for hyperdivergent subjects showing eruption of the permanent maxillary canine in the prepeak group (37.2%) was significantly higher than in the reference orthodontic population (21%)., Conclusions: The eruption of the permanent maxillary canine can occur at any stage in skeletal maturation before the end the pubertal growth spurt (CS1-CS4), with hyperdivergent subjects more frequently having prepubertal canine eruption.

To bridge the cleft in the alveolar bone and to allow for physiologic eruption of the canine teeth, alveolar bone grafting is often necessary in patients with cleft lips and palates. Instead of autogenous bone, biomaterial seeded with autogenous osteogenic cells has found some clinical application. However, so far no real functional proof has been available to demonstrate that this technique also allows further physiologic features such as tooth eruption to occur. This report describes the results of grafting tissue-engineered bone into the alveolar cleft of a 10-year-old boy. Immediate postoperative healing was uneventful. Eight months after grafting, erupting teeth had moved into the newly formed bone. Eighteen months postoperatively at the site where the tissue-engineered graft had been inserted, the canine had erupted spontaneously in its proper place. The data suggest that tissue-engineered bone can lead to the ossification of the alveolar cleft and allow for physiologic spontaneous tooth eruption.

This study was designed to characterize the development of oral structures in the BR-1 minipig and to compare these data with literature reports on domestic swine and other minipig lineages. Twelve male minipigs were anesthetized and given physical and radiographic examinations. The presence and chronology of tooth eruption from 3 to 15 months of age were assessed, and the radiographic results were interpreted by two certified researchers, who obtained a high index of agreement (kappa>0.81). The eruption chronology was similar to that reported for domestic swine and other minipig lineages. The results indicate that it is possible to use the BR-1 minipig in dental research.

In a study in Athens, Greece, during the summer of 2003, 2,304 patients (1,168 boys and 1,176 girls) were examined by a young dentistry. The examination occurred within the framework of a routine dental check-up performed at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The age span ranged from 3.00 to 24.93 years of age. Sex, age and present permanent teeth were recorded. Wisdom teeth were excluded. The sequence of tooth eruption differs significantly in the lower and upper jaw, whereas no significant differences existed when comparing the sides of each jaw. The tooth eruption in the lower and upper jaw of male and female probands is symmetrical. In comparing the upper and the lower jaw of both genders, it becomes evident that there is a tendency for earlier tooth eruptions in the lower jaw. In respect to the tooth eruption sequence, a change was noted in the upper jaw. Contrary to the reports of other authors, the second premolar has changed places with the canine and erupts prior to this tooth. This could also be demonstrated in recent studies from New York and Bremen (Germany). Otherwise no major differences concerning the sequence of tooth eruptions were observed, when compared with the results gained from other populations. Concerning the entire dentition, no acceleration of the tooth eruption could be noted. The computed differences of teeth eruption as a mean value calculated over all teeth was +/-1 year at maximum, compared with studies from different continents. Oral examination of teeth is a simple tool to calculate tooth eruption intervals. This first investigation in a population of Athens revealed a change in the eruption sequence of permanent teeth. These findings are relevant for dental treatment planning and should be reconfirmed at certain intervals.

Objective: Eruption of cleft-associated permanent canines was studied in 190 patients with unilateral cleft lip/palate and whose permanent canines had not erupted at the time of alveolar bone grafting. In 162 of these patients, width of bone defect was compared between patients who underwent surgical exposure of canines and those whose canines erupted naturally., Results: Cleft-associated canines naturally erupted after bone grafting in 150 patients (78.9%) and required surgical exposure in 36 patients (18.9%). Cleft-associated canines had not yet erupted in two patients. Two patients were lost to follow-up. Nasal-side bone defects were significantly wider in patients who underwent surgical exposure of cleft-associated permanent canines than in those whose cleft-associated permanent canines erupted naturally., Conclusions: The present results suggest that nasal-side cleft width is related to the need for surgical exposure of permanent canines in children with cleft lip/palate.

Aim: The aims of this study were to define the average time of eruption of permanent teeth, the range of variation of the eruption time of each tooth, and their sequence of eruption amongst boys and girls in Tehran, Iran., Methods: The population under study comprised 3744 pupils and students in the 4-15-year-old age group (1786 girls and 1958 boys) who were randomly selected from schools and training centres in the 20 districts covered by the General Department of Education and Training in Tehran. The research was carried out on a cross-sectional basis. The average age at eruption of permanent teeth, excluding third molars, was given as the mean (+/- SD) and median in months for each gender. A table of percentiles of the eruption time was also determined., Results: The results show that, with the exception of the maxillary second premolars, the average age at eruption of permanent teeth in girls is less than in boys. The results also show that mandibular teeth have an earlier eruption time than maxillary teeth in both boys and girls. By the age of 96 months, 97% of the girls had all their first permanent molars. In boys, the corresponding age was 99 months. Amongst girls, maxillary canines erupt earlier than maxillary second premolars., Conclusion: On average, girls have their permanent teeth erupt earlier than boys. The sequence of eruption differs between girls and boys for maxillary canines and maxillary second premolars.

This cross-sectional study investigated normal positional changes of the upper permanent canine and posterior teeth, hard palate, and sinus floor in normal Taiwanese children from the deciduous to early permanent dentition. In total, 261 panoramic radiographs were used. During the observation period, almost all structures changed their positions toward the distal and occlusal direction. The vertical positional changes of crowns of all teeth were greater than those of the root apices through all developmental stages. There were small positional changes in the mesial surfaces of the crowns of the upper buccal teeth until their roots had formed. There were continuous positional changes in the crowns and root apices of the permanent molars during tooth development and eruption. There were no significant changes in tooth inclination for any of the buccal teeth, whereas there were conspicuous changes in tooth inclination for the permanent molars. The floor of the maxillary sinus remarkably changed its position in an occlusal direction during the active eruption period of the first molar and buccal teeth.

The purpose of this study was to update the most commonly used tables of dental eruption (emergence), which are more than 50 years old and do not distinguish between ethnic and socio-economic groups. Clinical emergence data was collected for a modern sample of 574 French children and adolescents, aged 5.5 years to 15 years (294 girls and 280 boys). With respect to the present sample, the commonly used eruption tables of Hurme were accurate for most aspects of mandibular emergence, but were seriously flawed for the maxillary arch. Emergence of all permanent maxillary teeth varied by at least 3 months from Hurme's means; lateral incisors, canines, and second molars erupted earlier, but both premolars emerged later. Compared to similar French data collected in 1958, there appears to be a secular trend for later eruption of the maxillary premolars and earlier emergence of permanent second molars. These changes may reflect an evolutionary reduction in the size of the maxilla, a progressive decrease in genetic control of permanent canines, as well as first and second premolars, and/or progress in dental preventive measures to conserve primary molars. From a clinical perspective, appropriate dental emergence data are essential for effectively intercepting developmental malocclusions in children and adolescents.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the most frequent objective clinical manifestations found during the eruption of primary teeth and to assess the correlation between those symptoms and the eruption of various groups of teeth., Methods: The study was conducted in the Clinica Infantil Colsubsidio in Bogota, Colombia. Five hundred and eighty-five children participated in the study. One-hundred and forty-five children ages 4 to 36 months who had at least 1 erupting tooth were included in the study group. The other 357 children served as a control group. Parents were asked to complete a short questionnaire and children were then checked by one of the authors. Chi-square analysis was performed to analyze information obtained for the 2 groups. Level of significance was set at P < .05., Results: There were 81 girls (56%) and 64 boys (44%) in the study group, and 183 girls (54%) and 157 boys (46%) in the control group. The most frequent clinical manifestations were: drooling (15%), diarrhea (13%) and drooling-diarrhea (8%). The presence of fever and fever-diarrhea was shown in a lower percentage (8%). In the study group, boys demonstrated a higher prevalence of diarrhea than girls (P < .05). No statistical significance regarding other clinical manifestations and gender were observed. In the control group, 93% of the children did not show any clinical manifestation., Conclusions: An association has been shown between general objective manifestations like drooling (the most prevalent), fever and diarrhea, and the eruption of primary teeth. Most manifestations appeared during the eruption of the primary incisors.

Though little scientific evidence existed to support the belief among dentists who treat Pacific Islander populations that many children of the region erupt secondary teeth earlier and at an eruption rate which exceeds Caucasian children. Based upon a data set created in Hawai'i during the 1998-1999 school year, of 26,097 public school children, the opportunity presented itself to examine for variance in eruption timing and sequence. Hawai'i is an ethnic diverse community, with a majority population comprised of Asians and Pacific Islanders. Children, 5 through 9 years of age, were examined for gender and ethnic variance. In the aggregate, at all ages, girls erupted teeth earlier than boys, however, while generally true among individual tooth types, that variance was not always statistically significant. By ethnic group, African Americans exhibited earlier eruption by contrast with Caucasians, however, Caucasian children caught up by nine years of age. Native Hawaiian, Samoan and Tongan children exhibited earlier and high rates of secondary dentition eruption than Caucasian or African American children. Children of various Asian cohorts did not exhibit significant variance by contrast with Caucasians. Based upon these findings, the authors recommend that dietary fluoride supplementation of Native Hawaiian, Samoan and Tongan children begin at birth rather than 6 months of age and that these children be targeted for pit & fissure sealants as early as five years of age.

Background: Published standards for permanent tooth emergence in Australian children are 40 years old. The aim of this study was to present new data on the timing and sequence of permanent tooth emergence in a large sample of Australian children and to compare the findings with those of earlier studies., Methods: Records of a randomly selected sample of 8676 children, aged between 4 to 16 years, who had attended the clinics of the South Australian Dental Service were scanned optically and coded to provide the data for this study. A logistic regression analysis enabled median times of emergence, together with percentile ranges, to be calculated for each tooth, except third molars, in boys and girls. Comparisons were made between the sexes and with previously published values. The frequencies of occurrence of emergence polymorphisms for different tooth pairs were also computed., Results: The earliest teeth to emerge in both boys and girls were the central incisors and first molars, whereas the second premolars and molars and maxillary canines tended to be last to emerge. The mandibular teeth tended to precede the corresponding maxillary teeth in emergence in both sexes. Tooth emergence was advanced in girls compared with boys, averaging 4.5 months in the maxilla and 5.3 months in the mandible. In general, emergence times of children in the present sample were later than those reported previously for Australian children. The most common emergence polymorphism in the maxilla involved the canine and second premolar, whereas common polymorphisms in the mandible were noted for the central incisor and first molar, canine and first premolar, and the second premolar and second molar., Conclusions: Given that they have been collected relatively recently from a large sample of children, the new data reported in this paper can now be used as standards when assessing permanent tooth emergence of Australian children.

The eruption mechanism is not fully understood. It is known that the dental follicle is essential and that experimentally provoked denervation influence the process of eruption. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to elucidate the eruption pattern in a human population and relate this pattern to the pattern of jaw innervation. The eruption pattern was evaluated from the correlation between the emergence times of different teeth in the permanent dentition based on longitudinal data from a large national registry (12,642 boys and 12,095 girls). Correlations coefficients were generally high (>0.5) and higher between teeth within the same tooth groups (i.e. incisors, canines and premolars, and molars) than between teeth from different tooth groups. It was shown that the correlation in emergence of teeth closely followed the pattern of innervation of the jaws. Thus the study supported the hypothesis concerning a possible association between eruption and innervation.

The objectives of this study were to clarify the eruption time and sequence of primary teeth in Korean children. A random sample of 1070 children from ages of four to thirty-six months was examined: 567 were males and 503 were females. The median values to measure the eruption time of the primary teeth were used. The results show that the primary teeth of boys erupt earlier than those of girls. As to the eruption sequence of primary teeth, the mandibular central incisor and second molar erupted earlier than their maxillary counterparts. For the lateral incisor, the canine and the first molar, the maxillary teeth erupted before the mandibular ones.

Occlusion through successive phases of dental eruption was the concern of many authors. So that the progressive installation of occlusion is made harmonious way, it is necessary that the dental eruption sequences proceed correctly. The authors have studied rhythm appearance of permanent teeth, and they have determined the average eruption age of canines, first, second premolar and second molar. The results are given for the 574 children of the sample and following to the sex.

Functional occlusion and periodontal health were investigated after orthodontic treatment that involved extraction of second molars and after eruption of the third molars in 37 patients (25 female, 12 male). The mean age was 21 years 9 months (range, 16 years 1 month-30 years 5 months). The third permanent molars invariably erupted into a position that maintained good functional occlusion. Sixty-three percent of patients had canine guidance in lateral excursion; the remainder of patients had satisfactory group function. There were only 2 non-working side interferences in the sample, 1 from a recently erupted mandibular third molar. The periodontal health of the sample was generally excellent. Plaque score and bleeding on probing was very low (1.7% of sites). Periodontal health around both maxillary and mandibular teeth was extremely good. When attachment loss was assessed, 2238 of 2240 sites were clinically healthy. One patient, who had generally poor oral hygiene, had a 4-mm probing depth interproximally on the maxillary first and third molar contact. There was no correlation between periodontal health and mandibular third molar position. Therefore, both functional occlusion and periodontal health in the sample were good after loss of second permanent molars and eruption of the third molars.

The purpose of this study was to investigate normal eruptive pattern of upper permanent canine. One hundred and fifty-one panoramic radiographs were used. Inclination of upper canine and lateral incisor, length and horizontal and vertical positions of cusp and root apex of the canine were evaluated. The canine erupted with increasing distal inclination and with no significant changes of the lateral incisor. Developmental changes of the canines relative to palatal plane and midline were shown by figures.

This paper emphasizes the important role that secondary bone grafting plays on the treatment of patients with alveolar clefts. The authors present a literature review and, based on panoramic radiographs, retrospectively and longitudinally analyze the behavior of permanent canines after completion of secondary bone grafting in 50 patients at the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, University of São Paulo, Brazil. Twelve patients with unilateral cleft lip and alveolus and 38 patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (n = 50) had undergone bone grafts to repair their residual alveolar clefts before the eruption of their permanent canines. These patients were observed over an average period of 3 years. In 94% of the sample (47 patients), the permanent canines presented intra-alveolar movement toward the oral cavity. In 72% of those 47 patients (36 patients), the permanent canines spontaneously erupted through the grafted area. In 6% of the 47 patients (3 patients), the permanent canines required orthodontic traction.

Objective: To compare outcomes of bone grafting performed before eruption of the lateral incisor to outcomes of grafting performed before eruption of the canine and to evaluate the long-term results of bone grafting combined with delayed closure of the hard palate during mixed dentition., Design: Seventy consecutive patients (52 men and 18 women) with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate were studied. All patients underwent bone grafting with simultaneous closure of the cleft in the hard palate at the stage of mixed dentition. The velum had been repaired in infancy. Mean age for the bone grafting procedure was 8.4 years. Bone grafting was performed to facilitate eruption of the lateral incisor in 43 (61%) of the patients and to facilitate eruption of the canine in the remaining 27 (39%) patients. Intraoral radiographs were used to evaluate the morphologic characteristics of the cleft and the stage of eruption of the permanent lateral incisor and canine before bone grafting. Mean follow-up time was 4.0 years (range, 1-10.1 years)., Results: The mean time for the surgery, which included bone grafting and repair of the residual cleft in the hard palate, was 109 minutes, and the mean amount of bleeding was 121 ml. The rate of dehiscence in the flap covering the alveolar bone graft was 14%, and the rate of total failure of bone grafting was 3%. An oronasal fistula developed in the hard palate of 13% of patients, but the fistula was of sufficient size to serve as an indication for reoperation in only 6%. The postoperative alveolar bony height in the cleft area was more than 75% of the normal height in 94% of patients. Closure of the cleft space in the dental arch was performed or planned to be achieved orthodontically in 91% of patients. When bone grafting was performed to facilitate eruption of the lateral incisor, the cleft space was closed orthodontically in 100% of patients. The optimal indicator for timing of the bone grafting procedure from an orthodontic point of view was when the permanent lateral incisor or the canine close to the cleft was covered by a thin shell of bone (i.e., 7-9 years of age).

The normal eruption path of maxillary canine teeth was quantified on annual lateral and depressed postero-anterior cephalometric radiographs of 15 females and 15 males aged 5-15 years. The lateral view was rotated so that the horizontal coincided with the Frankfort plane on the depressed views, thus orientating the two views in space. Successive positions of canine cusps were marked on tracings of both views superimposed on the anterior outline of the zygomatic process. All positions of the canine cusps were digitized and the horizontal, vertical and lateral annual differences found by subtraction, taking the first position of the canine as the origin. The chronological data were corrected for enlargement and adjusted to increments of 12 months. Adjustments were also made to take into account varying ages of eruption. Posterior movement occurred between 7 and 13 years (all three years before eruption, the year of eruption and the following year). Vertical movement occurred between 5 and 13 years (all of the six years before eruption, the year of eruption and the following year). Lateral movement tended to be in a palatal direction up to 2 years before eruption followed by significant buccal movement in the year before eruption, the year of eruption and the following year. Data are given for eruption in three planes.

The eruption of the permanent teeth in Down's individuals is reportedly delayed. The extent of such delay in comparison to normal children has been little studied. The eruption characteristics of the permanent teeth in a sample of Chilean individuals with Down's syndrome were here compared with those of the normal Chilean population. The sample consisted of 240 Down's individuals (all with trisomy 21), 116 males and 124 females. The chronological sequence of eruption in Down's children was not completely different from the normal. The least affected teeth were upper and lower first molars and central and lateral incisors. Alterations of the eruption sequence were not necessarily a consequence of alterations in the time of eruption. Asymmetries between sides of the jaw were mainly in canines and premolars. Alterations in sequence timing and asymmetry seem to be age dependent, being less frequent between 7 and 9 yr of age and more frequent between 10 and 14 yr of age. This may also reflect the larger variances of age of eruption observed in Down's individuals. Despite this, Down's children maintained a certain similarity in sequence and symmetry in comparison to normals.

The author tests the validity of predicting the eruption-sequence of permanent teeth from orthopantomograms taken during the early mixed dentition, based on criteria of root formation.

The development of the periodontal ligament was investigated from serial sections of the mandibles of ferrets ranging in age from 42 days to 66 days post partum. Both succedaneous and non-succedaneous teeth were studied and similarities were seen in both types of tooth. No significant amounts of alveolar bone were observed being deposited beneath the erupting root apices and periodontal collagen fibres were seen attached to the walls of the sockets just prior to emergence of the crown into the oral cavity. Compared with the condition a few days after eruption, the collagen fibres on, and just prior to, emergence were thinner, had a more limited area of attachment, and were more randomly orientated. The results indicate that alveolar bone deposition and collagen traction do not generate the eruptive force and that there are species differences in these structural features during the eruptive process.

Two to eight years after receiving autogenous iliac crest grafts for treatment of alveolar cleft defects, eighteen patients who had unilateral cleft palate were evaluated for their periodontal status. When cleft-associated canines were compared with contralateral control canines, no statistically significant differences were found between specific surface values for plaque index, gingival index, or probing depths. Attachment loss was found to be greater (less than 0.72 mm) on the mesio-facial, facial, and mesio-palatal surfaces of the cleft-associated canines than on the control canines. Fifty-six per cent of the cleft-associated canines required surgical exposure and 44% also required orthodontic assistance to erupt to a functional occlusion. Osseous grafting of alveolar cleft defects resulted in satisfactory clinical periodontal support for cleft-associated canines.

Forty-six patients with clefts of the alveolus who had received alveolar bone grafts (secondary osteoplasties) at ages 7-14 years, were studied. A total of 64 affected canines from 18 bilateral and 28 unilateral alveolar cleft patients was available. Follow up orthopantomographs were examined to determine the state of root development and spontaneous canine movement through the grafted site. The postoperative observation period ranged from 2-8 years (mean 4.3 +/- 1.5). All test canines erupted through the graft. Spontaneous eruption occurred for 27% of test canines, 17% required surgical uncovering (either bony or soft tissue), and 56% required surgical uncovering and orthodontic assistance to accomplish eruption. All patients required orthodontic treatment to accomplish arch alignment. The prognosis for canine eruption through a graft site is most favorable if the graft is performed at 1/4-1/2 canine root formation and when the patient is aged 9-12 years. The post graft observation period is very important and requires complete cooperation between the orthodontist and the surgeon.

The alveolar defect remaining after the repair of cleft lip and palate presents an aesthetic problem in the maxillary dental arch. Often the lateral incisor is missing or deformed. There are several prosthetic solutions to the problem. However, here a method is presented, of bone grafting and then orthodontically positioning the erupting maxillary canine into the defect, in selected cases.

This study evaluates the level of the gingival margin of labially erupted maxillary canines after orthodontic treatment in a sample of 47 individuals with a mean age of 14.2 years. Gingival recession was found in 33% of the canines with a high labial eruption pattern, and in 11% of those with a moderate labial eruption. A highly significant correlation was found between the clinical crown height and the original degree of high labial eruption. The evidence of this study supports the case for implementation of interceptive orthodontic treatment in order to prevent high labial eruption of maxillary canines.
