The medium-voltage dc (MVDC) system are intensely investigated by both industry and academy. However, how to realize a lower power circuit directly fed by MVDC is an important but easily neglected problem, which seriously affects the reliability of the dc system. The current high step-down circuits are mostly suitable for high-power applications, while the circuits for low-power applications are designed case by case. To address the obstacle, a generalized buck-boost type high step-down converter (BHSC) structure is proposed in this article. The submodules of BHSC are derived from basic dc–dc converter. As a result, the features of high modularity, simple structure, and low cost can be obtained, and each submodule operates independently without communication and synchronization to achieve voltage balance. Furthermore, a submodule strategy with Bang-Bang control, instead of hardware modification, is proposed to overcome the limitation of BHSC generality in medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) applications, due to the operating current difference in different submodules of the cascaded structure. Therefore, BHSC can be easily extended to MV or HV by increasing the number of submodules. Finally, an experimental evaluation of a 1 kV/80 W prototype converter is presented, which can be applied as auxiliary power supply for high-power converter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, the arm phase-shift conducting modulation (PSCM) is proposed for the alternate arm multilevel converter (AAMC). With the PSCM strategy, the half-bridge (HB) structure could be applied as the submodule (SM) topology to reduce the circuit complexity of the full-bridge submodule based AAMC. First, the phase-shift angle is introduced to match the voltage modulation ratio and power factor of ac grid. The energy stored in the submodule capacitors are balanced by regulating the phase-shift angle. Then, the design criteria and operation performance for HBSM-AAMC with the proposed PSCM strategy are analyzed and presented. Compared with HBSM-modular multilevel converters (MMC), 18% HBSMs and 9% power devices are reduced with the proposed topology and modulation, resulting in the lower construction cost. Furthermore, the loss distribution is analyzed, and the operating losses of HBSM-AAMC are smaller than that of HBSM-MMC. Three-level converters typically feature low switching loss and small filter size. In order to realize a high-power-density design for three-level converters, SiC MOSFETs may be selected instead of using Si insulated-gate bipolar transistors. However, all-SiC-MOSFET-based converters suffer from extremely high total cost. In this paper, a SiC MOSFET and Si device hybrid active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter is proposed. It consists of four Si active switches and only two SiC MOSFETs. Thus, it has lower total cost compared to the all-SiC-MOSFET-based ANPC converter. Furthermore, a dedicated modulation scheme is proposed to completely move all the switching events from Si devices to SiC MOSFETs by using redundant switching states. As a result, the switching losses are significantly reduced and extremely high efficiency is achieved. The proposed converter has fully utilized the low-switching-loss advantage of SiC MOSFETs and the low-cost advantage of Si devices, which shows significant superiority in high-end grid-connected inverter and rectifier applications. Multilevel converters are widely employed in the 30–50 kW medium-voltage grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) generation systems due to their higher power quality and lower switching losses compared with the two-level converters. Dual T-type three-level converters and one three-level diode neutral point clamped circuit can be integrated to derive a simplified five-level modular composited converter (5L-MCC) for the medium-voltage PV grid-connected systems. However, realizing the capacitor voltage balance is a challenge to enhance its reliability. First, the model of dc capacitor voltage variation of the 5L-MCC is discussed to expose a limitation once the nearest three-vector synthesis method is employed with conventional space vector modulation (SVM). In order to extend the operational range, a hybrid space vector modulation (HSVM) strategy is proposed, which integrates the optimized SVM switching sequence for the low-modulation ($M\,< \,0.5$ ) and a simplified vector synthesis method for the high-modulation region ( $M\geq 0.5$). The proposed hybrid modulation maintains the dc capacitor voltage balance over the full modulation range and power factor. The modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are attractive topologies for the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system. Since the complicated structure of MMC with hundreds sub-modules per arm, building an accurate model to design the appropriate control strategy is one of the main technical challenges. In this paper, the average-value model (AVM) of the MMCs considering the sub-module capacitor voltage ripple is established to explore the control dynamic performance of MMCs. The effect of the sub-module capacitor voltage ripple on the MMC dynamic behavior is explored and the equivalent impedances of the DC and AC sides in the MMC converters are extracted and evaluated. Based on the equivalent impedances, a particular AVM of MMCs, which comprises the equivalent capacitors reflecting the capacitor voltage ripple, is presented. Furthermore, the detailed interaction of the AC side voltages, AC side currents and arm voltages and the coupling relationship of AC output current id and iq can be also precisely described by the introduced AVM. Switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives are one competitive technology for traction motor drives. This paper proposes a novel and flexible SRM fault-tolerant topology with fault diagnosis, fault tolerance, and advanced control functions. The converter is composed of a single-phase bridge and a relay network, based on the traditional asymmetrical half-bridge driving topology. When the SRM-driving system is subjected to fault conditions including open-circuit and short-circuit faults, the proposed converter starts its fault-diagnosis procedure to locate the fault. Based on the relay network, the faulty part can be bypassed by the single-phase bridge arm, while the single-phase bridge arm and the healthy part of the converter can form a fault-tolerant topology to sustain the driving operation. A fault-tolerant control strategy is developed to decrease the influence of the fault. Furthermore, the proposed fault-tolerant strategy can be applied to three-phase 12/8 SRM and four-phase 8/6 SRM. Simulation results in MATLAB/Simulink and experiments on a three-phase 12/8 SRM and a four-phase 8/6 SRM validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, which may have significant economic implications in traction drive systems. Electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while switched reluctance motor (SRM) is one of the promising motor for such applications. This paper presents a novel SRM fault-diagnosis and fault-tolerance operation solution. Based on the traditional asymmetric half-bridge topology for the SRM driving, the central tapped winding of the SRM in modular half-bridge configuration are introduced to provide fault-diagnosis and fault-tolerance functions, which are set idle in normal conditions. The fault diagnosis can be achieved by detecting the characteristic of the excitation and demagnetization currents. An SRM fault-tolerance operation strategy is also realized by the proposed topology, which compensates for the missing phase torque under the open-circuit fault, and reduces the unbalanced phase current under the short-circuit fault due to the uncontrolled faulty phase. Furthermore, the current sensor placement strategy is also discussed to give two placement methods for low cost or modular structure. Simulation results in MATLAB/Simulink and experiments on a 750-W SRM validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, which may have significant implications and improve the reliability of EVs/HEVs. The dc symmetrical component method is introduced for the analysis and control of bipolar dc distribution systems under asymmetrical operation. This method is an extension of the classical symmetrical component theory in three-phase ac power systems. The asymmetrical voltage and current in the positive and negative poles are decomposed into symmetrical components in common and differential modes. The equivalent circuit for each mode is derived, which forms decoupled mode networks. Consequently, it allows for independent investigation of each mode, and provides an insightful view of the static and dynamic behavior of a bipolar dc power system. The dc symmetrical component method is a general approach which is applicable to different aspects of system design. As an example, an enhanced common-mode voltage regulation scheme is described. It suppresses common-mode LC resonance by adding active damping control, and reduces common-mode impedance to improve power quality and voltage stability. Single-phase voltage source transformerless inverters have been developed for many years and have been successful commercial applications in the distributed photovoltaic (PV) grid-connected systems. Moreover, many advanced industrial topologies and recent innovations have been published in the last few years. The objective of this paper is to classify and review these recent contributions to establish the present state of the art and trends of the transformerless inverters. This can provide a comprehensive and insightful overview of this technology. First, the generation mechanism of leakage current is investigated to divide the transformerless inverters into asymmetrical inductor-based and symmetrical inductor-based groups. Then, the concepts of dc-based and ac-based decoupling networks are proposed to not only cover the published symmetrical inductor-based topologies but also offer an innovative strategy to derive advanced inverters. Furthermore, the transformation principle between the dc-based and ac-based topologies is explored to make a clear picture on the general law and framework for the recent advances and future trend in this area. Finally, a family of clamped highly efficient and reliable inverter concept transformerless inverters is derived and tested to offer some excellent candidates for next-generation high-efficiency and cost-effective PV grid-tie inverters. In this paper, a decoupled controlled triport dc/dc converter is derived by combining two bidirectional single-phase buck–boost converters and one isolated full-bridge converter for multiple input source applications. The power density is improved, and the circuit structure is simplified because the power devices are completely shared in the primary side. Furthermore, the pulsewidth modulation plus phase-shift control strategy is introduced to provide two control freedoms and achieve the decoupled voltage regulation within a certain operating range. The duty cycle of the bidirectional buck–boost converters is adopted to balance the voltage between the two primary input terminals, while their phase angle is applied to regulate the accurate secondary voltage. Furthermore, zero-voltage-switching soft-switching operation is provided for all of the primary power switches due to the inherent phase-shift control scheme. Moreover, the two filter inductors in the bidirectional buck–boost converters and the isolated transformer in the full-bridge topology are integrated and replaced by the winding-cross-coupled inductors to reduce the component numbers and simplify the magnetic structure. Finally, a 1-kW prototype is built to verify all theoretical considerations, and it is shown that the proposed topology is particularly advantageous in the distributed power generation system with multiple energy sources. In order to eliminate the common-mode (CM) leakage current in the transformerless photovoltaic (PV) systems, the concept of the virtual dc bus is proposed in this paper. By connecting the grid neutral line directly to the negative pole of the dc bus, the stray capacitance between the PV panels and the ground is bypassed. As a result, the CM ground leakage current can be suppressed completely. Meanwhile, the virtual dc bus is created to provide the negative voltage level for the negative ac grid current generation. Consequently, the required dc bus voltage is still the same as that of the full-bridge inverter. Based on this concept, a novel transformerless inverter topology is derived, in which the virtual dc bus is realized with the switched capacitor technology. It consists of only five power switches, two capacitors, and a single filter inductor. Therefore, the power electronics cost can be curtailed. This advanced topology can be modulated with the unipolar sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) and the double frequency SPWM to reduce the output current ripple. As a result, a smaller filter inductor can be used to reduce the size and magnetic losses. The advantageous circuit performances of the proposed transformerless topology are analyzed in detail, with the results verified by a 500-W prototype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
