A novel programmed hybrid spreading spectrum modulation method to mitigate electromagnetic interference (EMI) emission and bearing current in the context of miniaturised and lightweight synchronous machine drives is proposed. The proposed method adopts the combination of conventional pulsewidth modulation (PWM) and low common mode voltage PWM. The offline look‐up table for switching frequency is acquired by analysing the root mean square voltage values at different modulation indices and angles. By adjusting the switching frequency according to this table, the spectrum can be spread into the sidebands of the switching frequency, and the harmonic spike can be suppressed. To address the challenge of increased current ripple and harmonic distortion in high torque density motors under overload conditions, a motor model that considers the cross‐saturation and slotting effect is presented. This motor model is used to derive the switching frequency correction factors, aiming to mitigate the influence of saturation and slotting effect on harmonic amplification. The proposed method is well‐suited for controlling synchronous motors using three‐phase two‐level voltage source inverters. The simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, showcasing its advantages in terms of computational complexity reduction and significant attenuation of peak EMI currents. The highway cycle is an important consideration in the EV's new European driving cycles (NEDCs) range, as the steady-state efficiency improvement in such conditions can be greatly beneficial. In the model predictive control (MPC) of the permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), the predicted next-step feedback reference generated by the equivalent circuit model (ECM) will contribute directly to the voltage vector selection, therefore influencing the performance of the motor control. In the current MPC scheme, when the conventional ECM is applied, it only considers copper loss, and the core loss is usually disregarded. In some circumstances, such as the highway cycle of EVs, the motors are at high speed, the torque is low, and the core loss can be significant in the losses, thus affecting the accuracy of control and the efficiency of the system; hence, the introduction of core loss ECM into the MPC would be beneficial. This paper aims to investigate the steady-state efficiency improvement of a novel ECM of PMSM considering core loss ECM, and the comparison will be based on model predictive direct torque control (MPDTC) using the core loss ECM, which will be compared to MPDTC with the conventional ECM of the PMSM. The results demonstrate the proposed ECM's efficiency improvement in various conditions, the limitations of the model and the simulation are discussed, and future work is proposed. This paper proposes a complex vector discrete current controller based on the flux-linkage data to solve the current loop oscillation problem of high power-density synchronous machines. An offline flux-linkage table measurement method considering cross saturation is introduced, and the data are used to deduce the symmetrical complex vector model. The influence of latch and delay of inverters on the line voltage of machines at high speed is analyzed and compensated during the controller design process. The proposed controller, which only needs to tune one parameter, can deal with the inductance mismatch issues caused by iron core saturation. The controller can be adopted in the current loop of saturated salient or nonsalient synchronous machines. Simulations and experiments have verified the effectiveness of the proposed method. With the adoption of 3D magnetic flux material and global ring windings, permanent magnet transverse flux machine (PMTFM) with soft magnetic composite cores can output relatively high torque density and only requires easy manufacturing process. For the PMTFM, there are two ways to put the permanent magnets (PMs). One is to put the PMs on the rotor side which is the traditional rotor PM TFM and the other is to put the PMs on the stator side which is the stator PM TFM. In this paper, the design methods and operation principle for both kinds of PMTFM will be presented and discussed. Four different TFMs (benchmark rotor PM TFM with NdFeB, stator PM TFM1 with ferrite magnet and stator PM TFM2 and TFM3 with NdFeB) have been designed, and the magnetic parameters and the main performance will be comparatively studied to show the main difference between stator PM TFM and rotor PM TFM. It can be seen that the stator PM TFM has better performance, and the stator PM TFM1 with ferrite magnets can have the same torque ability as that of the rotor PM TFM with NdFeB magnet but with very low material cost. With the adoption of NdFeB, the stator PM TFM2 can have two times higher torque ability than the rotor PM TFM, and the stator PM TFM2 can have the same torque ability as that of rotor PM TFM but with much smaller volume. As for the power factor and efficiency, it can be seen that the adoption of ferrite magnet will reduce both of them, and there is no much difference for the place where the PMs are installed. Direct torque control has been widely used to control surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs). To reduce the torque ripple and improve the flux tracking accuracy of SPMSM drives, sliding mode direct torque control (SMDTC) was developed. However, its optimal performance is hardly obtained by trial and error tuning of the control parameters. Hence, a hybrid wolf optimization algorithm (HWOA) is proposed to automatically adjust the controller's parameters of SMDTC for SPMSMs in this article. This algorithm combines the grey wolf optimization algorithm and coyote optimization algorithm. A conversion probability is designed to use them simultaneously. The proposed HWOA holds the advantages of the two algorithms. It converges very fast and can avoid local optimums effectively. Furthermore, a special fitness index with penalty terms is designed to enhance flux tracking accuracy and reduce the torque ripple of SPMSM drives. The industrial application of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) is limited by its high torque ripples caused by the doubly salient structure. In this article, an improved direct torque control (DTC) with sliding mode controller and observer is developed to reduce the torque ripples of a four-phase SRM. First, a sliding mode controller based on a new reaching law is developed for designing a sliding mode speed controller (SMSC) for the DTC system. An antidisturbance sliding mode observer (ADSMO) is then proposed and combined with the SMSC to build a composite antidisturbance speed control strategy. Moreover, detailed simulation validations are carried out to reveal the effectiveness of the new reaching law, SMSC and ADSMO. This article proposes an optimal scheme for an interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) in electric vehicle drive system using novel model predictive torque control (MPTC) algorithm. A single optimal voltage space vector (VSV) is applied with a two-level voltage source inverter in the conventional MPTC. An improved MPTC is presented to reduce the drawbacks with satisfied torque reaction performance without adding the sampling time. First, set switching table to alleviate the calculated complexity which decreasing the selection of the appropriate VSVs. Second, optimize the duty cycle to restrain the torque ripple. Finally, the conventional MPTC and the proposed MPTC are compared in the aspects of torque and flux ripples, current harmonics, and computational level in the experiment using dSPACE. This article presents a novel method for the sensorless control of interior permanent-magnet synchronous motors. An iterative search strategy based on dichotomy is proposed to provide a finite number of rotor position angles with good accuracy. These position angles are used to calculate the back electromotive force (EMF) in d-axis. The optimal rotor position angle is the one that yields a back EMF minimizing the defined cost function. With the increase of the iterations, the accuracy of rotor position angle increases geometrically. To effectively extract the back EMF signal under the low-speed condition, the high-frequency signal injection method is used to realize the low-speed operation of the motor. A hybrid control strategy is adopted to achieve the smooth switching from the low-speed to high-speed. This paper presents a compound propulsion system with a high-speed permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and two in-wheel motors for electric vehicles (EVs). In this paper, the longitudinal dynamic model of EVs is first presented. Then traction distribution ratio $\alpha $ is introduced to express the traction distribution between the front and the rear axles. Moreover, the function of power consumption concerned with the traction distribution ratio $\alpha $ is established. Therefore, the $\alpha $ that minimizes the power consumption function is selected as the optimal traction distribution ratio. To improve the performance of motor controllers, the model predictive torque control (MPTC) method is employed for high-speed and in-wheel motor drives. Experimental comparison with field-oriented control (FOC) shows the advantages of MPTC in dynamic response. The traditional flux-switching permanent-magnet machines (FSPMMs) with radial lamination have serious partial magnetic saturation for their nonlinear magnetic path, where the maximal flux density is usually more than 2.0 T occurring at the edges/tips of stator teeth or rotor poles. In this case, the core loss of FSPMMs becomes evident especially beyond the rated speed, which leads to decrease of output power, torque/power density, and efficiency. To overcome these problems, an axially laminated flux-switching permanent-magnet machine (ALFSPMM) with high grain-oriented silicon steel stator and rotor cores is proposed. The detailed fabrication procedures are presented in this paper. The theoretical characteristics of the ALFSPMM, such as back electromotive force, self-/mutual inductance, and cogging torque are calculated by the two-dimensional finite-element method (FEM). The influence of misalignment between the stator core and the rotor shaft (a common issue in motor manufacturing) is investigated by the FEM. Experimental measurements of the prototype machine are presented to validate the FEM calculation. In addition, a simple low-cost method to measure the cogging torque is also presented in this paper. In this paper, a modified direct torque control (DTC) for permanent-magnet synchronous machines, which enables important torque- and flux-ripple reduction by using voltage vectors with variable amplitude and angle, is proposed. In the proposed DTC, the amplitudes of torque and flux errors are differentiated and employed to regulate the amplitude and angle of the output voltage vectors online, which are finally synthesized by space-vector modulation (SVM). Two simple formulas are developed to derive the amplitude and angle of the commanding voltage vectors from the errors of torque and flux only. The conventional switching table and hysteresis controllers are eliminated, and a fixed switching frequency is obtained with the help of SVM. Stator flux is estimated from an improved voltage model, which is based on a low-pass filter with compensations of the amplitude and phase. The proposed DTC is comparatively investigated with the existing SVM-DTC from the aspects of theory analysis, computer simulation, and experimental validation. The simulation and experimental results prove that the proposed DTC is very simple and provides excellent steady-state response, quick dynamic performance, and strong robustness against external disturbance and control-parameter variations. Permanent magnet couplings can convert a dynamic seal into a static seal, thereby greatly improving the stability of the underwater propulsion unit. In order to make full use of the tail space and improve the transmitted torque capability, a conical Halbach permanent magnet coupling (C-HPMC) is proposed in this paper. The C-HPMC combines multiple cylindrical HPMCs with different sizes into an approximately conical structure. Compared with the conical permanent magnet couplings in our previous work, the novel C-HPMC has better torque performance and is easy to process. The analytical calculation method of transmitted torque of C-HPMC is proposed on the basis of torque calculation of the three common types of HPMCs. The accuracy of the torque calculation of the three HPMCs is verified, and the torque performance of the three HPMCSs of different sizes is compared and discussed. The "optimal type selection" method is proposed and applied in the design of C-HPMC.
