This study focuses on using the chemical compositions of plagioclase to further investigate the petrogenesis of Chang'E-5 young mare basalts and constrain its parental melt composition. Together with previously published data, our results show that the plagioclase in mare basalts overall displays large variations in major and trace element concentrations. Inversion of the plagioclase data indicates that the melt compositions parental to Chang'E-5 basalts have high rare earth elements (REE) concentrations similar to the high-K KREEP rocks (potassium, rare earth elements, and phosphorus). Such a signature is unlikely to result from the assimilation of KREEP components, because the estimated melt Sr shows positive correlations with other trace elements (e.g., Ba, La), which are far from the KREEP end-member. Instead, the nearly parallel REE distributions and a high degree of trace element enrichment in plagioclase indicate an extensive fractional crystallization process. Furthermore, the estimated melt REE concentrations from plagioclase are slightly higher than those from clinopyroxene, consistent with its relatively later crystallization. Using the Ti partition coefficient between plagioclase and melt, we estimated the parental melt TiO2 content from the earliest crystallized plagioclase to be ~3.3 ± 0.4 wt%, thus providing robust evidence for a low-Ti and non-KREEP origin for the Chang'E-5 young basalts in the Procellarum KREEP terrane. Ilmenite occurs as a common accessory mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks and is a major constituent in lunar basaltic rocks. The distributions and concentrations of major and trace elements in ilmenite have potential to record temporal changes in melt chemistry and crystal fractionation processes. However, such data are scarce because of the limitations of in situ microanalytical technology, the lack of reference materials for trace elements, and the difficulties in analyzing the small needle-like shape of ilmenite. In this study, a natural ilmenite sample derived from the Panzhihua Fe–Ti–V oxide ore deposit was characterized for its major and trace elements in relation to the potential use as reference material. The homogeneity of the studied ilmenite (PZH12-09) was assessed by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). It is homogeneous with relative standard deviation (RSD) values within ±3.76% for major elements (Fe, Ti, Mg, and Mn) and ±12.6% for trace elements (Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Zr, Nb, Hf, and Ta), respectively. The relative deviations for major and trace elements determined by solution-mode ICP-MS and in situ microanalysis range from 0.11% to 7.71%, suggesting that the PZH12-09 ilmenite can be used as a reference material for in situ microanalysis. Furthermore, we developed a high-precision EPMA method to simultaneously determine the major and trace elements of ilmenite. The disadvantage of high detection limits and poor accuracy in trace element analyses were overcome by optimizing the analytical conditions, including the accelerating voltage (20 kV), beam current (200 nA), use of large Bragg crystals (LPET and LLIF), aggregate intensity counting, peak overlap and secondary standard corrections. The measured concentrations of most trace elements are consistent within 10% relative deviation compared with the reference values. The RSD values were within ±15% at various concentrations of trace elements (except for Ni and Nb), indicating the high accuracy and precision characteristics of the EPMA methodology. Detection limits for the trace elements vary from 11 to 27 μg g−1 (3σ). The developed method should provide robust trace element data for both extraterrestrial and terrestrial ilmenite samples at high spatial resolution (1–2 μm). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract On Earth, chemical weathering of basaltic rocks not only modulates the climate change, but also plays a crucial role on the ocean oxygenation and ecosystem evolution. Records of paleo-weathered crusts are a challenge to identify because they are obscured by subsequent alteration processes and buried by the newly formed volcanic lavas. However, late formed volcanic rocks theoretically could record previously weathered crust via their assimilation and fractional crystallization (AFC) processes. Here, we present a systematic study on major, trace elements and Sr-Nd-Mg isotopes in a suite of Changbaishan early formed basalts and late erupted trachytes from Northeast China. Detailed evidence of field observation, geochemical signature and rhyolite-MELTS simulations suggest that trachytes mainly originated from deep fractional crystallization of basaltic melts. The low abundant trachytes from the stratigraphic layer above the basalts display decoupled Mg Sr and Nd isotopes. δ26Mg and 87Sr/86Sr in trachytes range from −0.27 up to +0.94‰ (the heaviest isotopic composition ever reported for Mg in the igneous rocks) and 0.70490 to 0.71065, respectively, which are significantly elevated relative to that of their mantle source. However, they preserved mantle source-like 143Nd/144Nd (0.512584 to 0.512656) ratios. These unusual characteristics cannot be explained by thermal diffusion, fractional crystallization or simple crustal contamination processes. Specifically, δ26Mg correlates positively with SiO 2 and 87Sr/86Sr, and negatively with MgO, CaO, Al 2 O 3 , Sr and Nb/U indicators. The highly elevated Mg and Sr isotopes but limited Nd isotopic changes in trachytes require a component to be the relatively younger weathering residue of basaltic rocks. Taking this component as a wall rock endmember, the well-developed above correlations can be best modelled by AFC processes. This reflects that some trachytes in the aftermath of AFC processes almost fully lost their primary source characteristics, but inherited the intense chemical weathering signature of basalts. This event probably occurred in the middle Miocene as studies of paleosols showed humid and warm climate during that period after the initial eruption of Changbaishan basalts. Therefore, our study as a specific case for the first time provides an efficient way to explore paleo-weathering of basaltic crusts buried in the Earth's surface, through comprehensive investigating Mg, Sr and Nd isotopes of volcanic rocks developed in the late stage of a volcano cone. Lunar impact glasses can provide important information on the bulk compositions of their sources and the impact history of the Moon. Here, we report the chemical composition of fifty-four clean glass spherules containing neither relict clasts nor crystals from the Chang'e-5 (CE5) regolith. They can be subdivided into three compositional groups: (1) mid-Ti basaltic (TiO 2 = 4.1 ∼ 6.5 wt%), (2) low-Ti basaltic (TiO 2 = 1.3 ∼ 3.9 wt%), and (3) high-Al (Al 2 O 3 > 15 wt%). Fifty-one glasses (∼94 %) are mid-Ti basaltic, which form a loose compositional cluster for most major and trace elements. These glasses exhibit considerable variations in SiO 2 (35.3 ∼ 45.3 wt%). Their TiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , MgO and CaO show negative correlations with SiO 2 , while the Na 2 O, K 2 O and P 2 O 5 positively correlate with SiO 2 , also yielding a positive correlation between the CIPW normative plagioclase and olivine. These variations likely result from differential vaporization of SiO 2 , strongly suggesting an impact origin of these glasses. Their major and trace element compositions are averagely similar to the bulk-rock, in turn indicating that they were formed from the local regolith. The remaining three glasses, including two low-Ti basaltic and one high-Al variety, exhibit distinct major and trace elements from the regolith, indicating an exotic source. In addition, the mid-Ti basaltic glasses provide another approach for estimating the average composition of the CE5 basalt other than directly measuring the small basalt fragments assuming that the exotic materials in the CE5 regolith were limited. This estimation reveals critical trace element characteristics of the CE5 basalt, e.g., it has higher La/Yb (3.71), Sm/Yb (1.76), Sr/Yb (31.6), and (Eu/Eu*) N (0.45) than KREEP, indicating that CE5 basalt must derive from a non-KREEP source. Chemical modeling indicates that the contribution of KREEP-rich materials in the mantle source should be less than 0.3 %. The trace element characteristics of the CE5 basalt can be reproduced by extensive (80 %) fractional crystallization after low-degree (2 %) melting. We propose that this fractional crystallization process might occur at depth, implying vast igneous underplating (7,250 ∼ 11,750 km3) beneath the CE5 landing area. This study also suggests that the high Th concentration (5.43 ppm) is an inherent property of the CE5 basalt resulting from extensive fractional crystallization. Thus, high Th detected by remote sensing may not be associated directly with a KREEP component but rather with highly fractionated basalts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
