The paper focuses on translated titles of Canadian women writing in Croatia, taking into consideration translations from English and French language, primarily translations published in books, anthologies and literary magazines, but also volumes of poetry and other genres. The findings of our research include the search for patterns that occur in translation of specific works and authors, as well as determining which authors and literary genres have been translated most frequently, what the (inter)national publishing and specific cultural context was at the time of publication of individual works, and what circumstances might have influenced the selection of particular Canadian women authors for translation. They were first translated into Croatian in 1970s, but the majority of works were published in the past two decades, and especially in the past ten years.

The paper focuses on translated titles of Canadian writing in Croatia, beginning with an assumption that translations are crucial vehicles of cultural transfer. Both translations from English and French language are considered, including translations published in books, anthologies and literary magazines, as well as works dealing with and/or set in Canada written by non-Canadian authors. First translations, almost exclusively of adventure and native novels, were published at the beginning of the 20th century, but it was not until 1970s that Canadian literature began attracting more attention in the Croatian cultural milieu. Since 1970s a considerable number of contemporary and now canonical authors have been translated in Croatia, such as Margaret Atwood, Barry Callaghan and Robertson Davies. Most of the translations were published during the last two decades, starting with the national independence of Croatia, and in the context of re-establishing its unique cultural and linguistic heritage through new Croatian translations of world literature. But the highest number of Canadian translations was published starting with the year 2000, mostly of genre fiction, including SF and fantasy, women authors and authors that are considered as representative of multicultural literature. The paper will offer a general overview of translated fiction and non-fiction, and consider the patterns of translations of both the prevailingly anglophone Canadian writers as well as francophone Canadian authors.
