Climate change and other anthropogenic disturbances are increasing liana abundance and biomass in many tropical and subtropical forests. While the effects of living lianas on species diversity, ecosystem carbon, and nutrient dynamics are receiving increasing attention, the role of dead lianas in forest ecosystems has been little studied and is poorly understood. Trees and lianas coexist as the major woody components of forests worldwide, but they have very different ecological strategies, with lianas relying on trees for mechanical support. Consequently, trees and lianas have evolved highly divergent stem, leaf, and root traits. Here we show that this trait divergence is likely to persist after death, into the afterlives of these organs, leading to divergent effects on forest biogeochemistry. We introduce a conceptual framework combining horizontal, vertical, and time dimensions for the effects of liana proliferation and liana tissue decomposition on ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycling. We propose a series of empirical studies comparing traits between lianas and trees to answer questions concerning the influence of trait afterlives on the decomposability of liana and tree organs. Such studies will increase our understanding of the contribution of lianas to terrestrial biogeochemical cycling, and help predict the effects of their increasing abundance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change has resulted in an increase in drought severity in the species-rich tropical and subtropical forests of southern China. Exploring the spatiotemporal relationship between drought-tolerance trait and tree abundance provides a means to elucidate the impact of droughts on community assembly and dynamics. In this study, we measured the leaf turgor loss point (πtlp) for 399 tree species from three tropical forest plots and three subtropical forest plots. The plot area was 1 ha and tree abundance was calculated as total basal area per hectare according to the nearest community census data. The first aim of this study was to explore πtlp abundance relationships in the six plots across a range of precipitation seasonality. Additionally, three of the six plots (two tropical forests and one subtropical forest) had consecutive community censuses data (12–22 years) and the mortality ratios and abundance year slope of tree species were analyzed. The second aim was to examine whether πtlp is a predictor of tree mortality and abundance changes. Our results showed that tree species with lower (more negative) πtlp were more abundant in the tropical forests with relative high seasonality. However, πtlp was not related to tree abundance in the subtropical forests with low seasonality. Moreover, πtlp was not a good predictor of tree mortality and abundance changes in both humid and dry forests. Tropical forests are characterized by vast biomass, complex structures and mega-biodiversity. However, the adaptation processes of these forests to seasonal water availability are less understood, especially those located in the monsoonal and mountainous regions of tropical Southeast Asia. This study used four representative tropical forests spanning from 2° N to 22° N in continental Southeast Asia to address dry-condition photosynthesis at the seasonal scale. We first provided novel and reliable estimations of ecosystem photosynthesis (gross primary production; GPP) seasonality at all four sites. As expected, both evergreen and deciduous seasonal forests exhibited higher GPPs during the rainy season than during the dry season. A bimodal pattern corresponding to solar radiation occurred in the GPP of the perhumid forest. The surface conductance (G s) was consistently lower both in the dry season and during dry spells (DSPs) than during the wet season and non-dry spells. However, this did not prevent GPP from increasing alongside increasing irradiance in the perhumid forest, suggesting that other ecosystem physiological properties, for example, the light-saturated photosynthetic rate, must have increased, thus surpassing the effect of G s reduction. Thus, perhumid forests could be defined as light-demanding ecosystems with regard to their seasonal dynamics. Seasonal forests are water-stressed ecosystems in the dry season, as shown by the reductions in GPP, G s and related ecosystem physiological properties. At all four forest sites, we observed a lack of consistent adaptive strategy to fit the water seasonality due to the diversity in leaf phenology, soil nutrient availability, root depth and other potential factors. Large‐diameter hail is unusual in the lowland tropics; consequently, its impact on water flux responses of trees and lianas due to foliage loss is unknown. In December 2012, Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (21°55′N) in southern Yunnan, China, experienced the most severe hailstorm in approximately 30 years, with hailstones of 8‐ to 17‐mm diameter falling for 10–30 min. We assessed the effect of this hailstorm on sap flux density (SFD) in response to foliage loss in six tree and three liana species. Among the trees, for a given atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD), Tectona grandis and Dipterocarpus tuberculatus showed a significant reduction in sap flux density and water use during the post‐hailstorm week in comparison to pre‐hailstorm week. In contrast, a liana Ventilago calyculata showed a significant increase in SFD during the first post‐hailstorm week, whereas the other tree and liana species showed no significant change in their SFD and water use. T. grandis also showed visible wilting during the first 5 days post‐hailstorm. However, this tree species showed recovery from wilting and also no more reduction in SFD after ~7–9 days. D. tuberculatus also showed SFD recovery a week post‐hailstorm. We conclude that the impact of a heavy hailstorm on the water flux of tropical trees and lianas was mild or neglectable. Our study documented a rare severe hailstorm occurrence and its impact on ecosystem processes of tropical forest and enhances our understanding about water flux of tropical woody species exposed to hailstorm. Lianas exhibit peak abundance in tropical forests with strong seasonal droughts, the eco-physiological mechanisms associated with lianas coping with water deficits are poorly understood., We examined soil water partitioning, sap flow, and canopy eco-physiological properties for 99 individuals of 15 liana and 34 co-occurring tree species in three tropical forests that differed in soil water availability., In the dry season, lianas used a higher proportion of deep soil water in the karst forest ( KF; an area with severe seasonal soil water deficit ( SSWD)) and in the tropical seasonal forest ( TSF, moderate SSWD), permitting them to maintain a comparable leaf water status than trees in the TSF or a better status than trees in the KF. Lianas exhibited strong stomatal control to maximize carbon fixation while minimizing dry season water loss. During the dry period, lianas significantly decreased water consumption in the TSF and the KF. Additionally, lianas had a much higher maximum photosynthetic rates and sap flux density in the wet season and a lower proportional decline in photosynthesis in the dry season compared with those of trees. , Our results indicated that access to deep soil water and strong physiological adjustments in the dry season together with active wet-season photosynthesis may explain the high abundance of lianas in seasonally dry forests. Because of climate change, extreme droughts have become more frequent and caused widespread tree mortality, and thus significant shifts in community structure and function in many forests. Hydraulic failure is a major cause of drought-induced tree mortality. However, its effects on tree dynamics during repeated extreme droughts in tropical forests with different soil water availability are poorly understood. In this study, we surveyed the mortality rate and change in abundance (basal area) for 29 tree species from a humid tropical ravine rainforest (TRF) and an adjacent dry tropical karst forest (TKF) between 2004 and 2015. During this period, two extreme droughts occurred. We measured leaf and stem hydraulic-related traits and analyzed the trait–demography relationships. Our results showed that repeated extreme droughts induced an increase in tree mortality, and thus significantly affected the change of species abundance in the two forest communities. In both forests, the tree species with higher stem embolism resistance were more likely to survive extreme droughts, and increased in basal area during the census period. Moreover, the tree species in the two forests exhibited contrasting hydraulic strategies to deal with extreme drought. The lower mortality rate was associated with larger leaf and stem hydraulic safety margins in the TRF, but with more negative leaf hydraulic safety margin and stronger vulnerability segmentation (larger difference in embolism resistance between leaf and stem) in the TKF. This study expands our understanding of the hydraulic mechanisms to cope with extreme droughts in tropical tree species grown in different substrates under the present and future climatic conditions. Hydraulic safety margins (HSM) have been widely studied to assess the hydraulic risks and/or strategies of plant species under drought. However, calculations of HSM tend to vary between studies, leading to conflicting conclusions. In this study, HSM of 16 co-occurring woody species (including evergreen trees, brevi-deciduous trees, and lianas) in a tropical karst forest was investigated. They were expressed as: (1) the difference between minimum leaf water potential and water potential causing 50% loss of leaf hydraulic conductance (HSM leaf), (2) the difference between water potential at stomatal closure and that at 50% loss of branch hydraulic conductivity (HSM stomatal), and (3) the difference between water potential at 50% loss of leaf hydraulic conductance and that at 50% loss of branch hydraulic conductivity (HSM segmentation). We asked the following questions: were HSM leaf in the normal and extreme dry seasons across plant groups different? Were there correlations between different HSM -calculations? Results showed that, on average, the three plant groups showed similar and positive HSM leaf in the normal dry season, but evergreen trees declined to a more negative value in the extreme dry season while the other two groups remained positive. The massive loss of leaf hydraulic conductance in several evergreen tree species was consistent with their extensive shoot dieback under extreme droughts. Across species, there were no significant relationships between HSM stomatal and HSM leaf. Most species (mainly lianas and brevi-deciduous trees) showed negative HSM segmentation , which did not support the vulnerability segmentation hypothesis that branches are more resistant to cavitation than leaves. Moreover, more negative HSM segmentation tended to have lower HSM stomatal and larger HSM leaf in the extreme dry season. This study indicates that karst evergreen trees are more likely to experience leaf hydraulic failure under extreme droughts, and reveals potential correlations between branch and leaf hydraulic safety strategies.
