Four Chinese diplomats have been able to occupyo the position of undersecretary-general of the UN since China resumed its seat in the world body in Oct 1971. The first Chinese to occupy the position was Tang Mingzhao who assumed the position from 1972 to 1979. The second was Bi Jilong who assumed the office from 1979 to 1985 while the third was Xie Qimei who was undersecretary-general from 1985 to 1991. The fourth was Ji Chaozhu who assumed his office on Mar 14, 1991. All four Chinese diplomats were educated in the US and were former officials of the Chinese International Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
