The objective of this work is the analysis of the collaboration between the University and rural communities within the framework of a participatory methodological proposal focused on achieving sustainable development and its application in two cases in the Gualeguaychu department of the Entre Ríos province. The cases presented originate from two inter-institutional cooperation agreements signed between the University of Concepción del Uruguay and its Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism with the Presidents of the Communes of Aldea San Juan and Irazusta, through which work teams of teachers and students of the Urban Planning Chair were formed to carry out studies and formulate proposals to support the communal technical bodies in planning strategies and projects to promote sustainable development with a regional focus. These agreements have been of special interest to the communes and have made it possible to go through participatory processes to reach consensus on both future territorial planning scenarios and alternative projects for their implementation, while also being vital for the theoreticalpractical complementation of the students in consolidating their specialty. The activities and results were developed in parallel in each commune with a team assigned to each of them during the second quarter of 2022. Based on a theoretical framework built on the ecosystemic understanding of the rural landscape (Forster et al. 2014) of its integrated management (Scherr et al. 2015) and of the natural and built heritage (UNESCO, 2017; ICOMOS-IFLA, 2017 and Di Fazio et al. 2018), a participatory methodologyis developed for the design of a prospective project scenario that favors the construction of the social agreements required for its integrated and sustainable management. The proposed operational methodology consisted of several stages: the agreement with the communes that included the agreement of objectives, the identification of actors and basic information, an initial analysis stage with interviews with actors, physical survey and analysis of census data, another stage of characterization of the territorial structure, mapping of problems, potentialities and prioritization of the same, the construction of alternative scenarios both of territorial structure, projects and programs as well as regulations for territorial planning and land management, their subsequent evaluation in a participatory workshop, the stage of definition and the design of prospective structural proposals, projects and regulations based on the consensus reached that were delivered in a second workshop with all the information collected and produced to serve as a basis for the planning and territorial management of each of the Communes. Finally, the conclusions explore possible futures that could contribute to the sustainable management of the landscape that is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the beginning of the new century, Rio Cuarto, the second city of the province, the capital city of the Rio Cuarto Department, has undergone a process of urban expansion as a result, to a large extent, of the channeling of agricultural surpluses into the real estate market. Through the simulation of the future urban expansion of the Río Cuarto metropolitan area, relevant information is generated that is not currently available for urban decisionmaking to realize a sustainable city as established in the objectives of the POU-R4. The simulation was carried out with the SACCITY program, an open-source computational tool based on the model of cellular automata compatible with Geographic Information Systems, developed by Dr. Santiago Linares for the purpose of ... "Study of urban growth and expansion through the simulation of future scenarios to be able to anticipate the possible pattern of expansion of a city". The results obtained visualize the possible magnitude of the expansion and its impact on densities, the main indicator of sustainability. In addition, the feedback of the expansive process from generating islands of urbanization in the periurban area is evident. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CITIES & towns , *WAR , *URBAN growth , *RURAL-urban relations , *PETROLEUM industry , *VIOLENCE - Abstract
The urbanization of Colombian cities is marked by violence and poverty (Ruíz Salguero et al., 2007). The Colombian armed conflict displaced millions of people from the countryside who sought refuge in urban centers. As a result of this process, the cities of the country grew poverty belts that accentuated socio-spatial fragmentation. The objective of this work is to analyze the process of socio-spatial transformation of Barrancabermeja in relation to the accelerated arrival of people displaced by violence. We seek to analyze the process of socio-spatial fragmentation and segregation of forced migrants in a city historically marked by the spatialization of oil industry. We propose a methodological approach based primarily on quantitative data but draw on qualitative sources to complement observations and analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article focuses on the process of urbanization and growth in the city of Juiz de Fora in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais during the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. We problematize the relationship between this process, marked by a developmentalist and elitist ideology, and the construction of the political-criminal and punitive framework in the municipality. Based on the dialogue between historical studies on the city and the theoretical frameworks of critical criminology, we observe the bonds connecting the processes of urbanization and development and the punitive economy during the period under study, along with the social and criminal impacts throughout the course of the city's history. PHOTOGRAPHS , *LANDSCAPES , *NATURAL landscaping , *LANDSCAPE changes , *ORE deposits , *MANGROVE forests - Abstract
The transformations that took place throughout the 19th and 20th centuries on the relief of Rio de Janeiro City, linked to the need to expand its urban site, led to a significant change in its natural landscape. This article seeks to discuss some of the changes that occurred based on the concepts of landscape and technogenic reliefs, seeking to highlight changes originated by the interventions and morphological alterations associated with the land use and occupancy policy. The methodological bases are based on the analysis of the bibliographic production on urban evolution, historical images and photographic records capable of demonstrating anthropic changes in the terrain. Thereby, we look forward to elucidating how the city was transformed and how it expanded, mainly through innumerable landfills (over mangrove ecosystems, lagoons and swampy areas), recognized here as typologies of technogenic relief called "made ground" in the field of scientific research. The purpose of this article is to present the history of the urban growth of San Juan de Girón (Santander) between 1964 and 1985, based on the territorial development that took place in the area surrounding the city. In studying the periphery, it takes account of documentation illustrating development, location and housing projects, thus obtaining a morphological and typological approach to the problem. In addition to this, it undertakes a historical and physical reading of the new territory, which made it possible to break down the old urban schemes that governed both the city and the regional context. This made it possible to establish three exact moments in the configuration of the periphery and to identify the main urban agents that promoted diverse public and private projects as a solution to the demand for housing that arose in that era.

- Abstract
In the decades before the 2007 global economic crisis, Spain and, in particular, the Region of Madrid (due to its status as capital), recorded high rates of land use changes, related to gains in urban, commercial and transport uses. Between 1990 and 2006, artificial uses increased in almost 70%. These changes have been located throughout its territory, even inside natural protected areas. Using four temporary data of years 1982, 1990, 2000 and 2006, statistics and spatio-temporal results are obtained. Land use change dynamics in Madrid has been intense and fast, recording in this period and in certain areas of the region, especially around its metropolitan area, up to three land use transitions. These changes area related with the distance to existing urban areas and with the improvement of accessibility regarding to development of new transport infrastructures, mainly highways and radial roads. Legislation on urban planning in the region and its municipalities, has allowed the large development this land uses typology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study is to adapt the calculations of the Pasture Degradation Index (GDI) to the Brazilian savannah using medium spatial resolution satellite image for the dry season. Vegetation cover is the main evaluation parameter used to calculate the GDI. The extreme ranges of the grazing class were determined by the NDVI histogram of a single date. Pasture cover was distinguished into five classes called Vegetable Pasture Cover (GVC), derived from NDVI and compared with five other classes derived from field photographs, named Green Coverage Percentage (GCP). The similarity between GVC and GVP demonstrated that GVC can be used to classify pasture cover. As a product of GVC, GDI was obtained. The GDI showed that pasture degradation in Paraíso das Águas is very serious. Extremely severe and Severe degradation occupy 9.28% and 25.22% of the study area, moderate and light degradation of pasture occupy 8.29% and 4.50%, respectively, and the non-degradation area covers 1.43 % of pastures. The results suggest the possibility of applying the GDI, originally developed for natural fields and multitemporal remote sensing data, to evaluate the conditions of the tropical savanna planted fields by means of a unique image.

The urban planning of a municipality, when well carried out, results in an increase in the quality of life of citizens via several factors, such as better urban mobility, thermal comfort and even health benefits. Faced with the increase in urbanization and its impact on the environment, as well as the need to create public policies, the objective of this work was to evaluate the situation of urban planning in the Jardim Aeroporto neighborhood of the municipality of Itu, São Paulo, Brazil. An inventory and georeferencing of the tree individuals of 22 routes was carried out. To analyze the spatial distribution, the data were evaluated using the Kernel index and the degree of attention index. A total of 338 arboreal individuals distributed in 26 families and 47 species were sampled, with the most frequent species Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack, of exotic origin (15.68%). Only one route had a low level of attention, the others were between medium and high level of attention (n=21). In addition, there was a deficit of 1352 trees in the neighborhood. The results show that the roads of the Jardim Aeroporto neighborhood have an uneven distribution of arboreal individuals with a considerable amount of exotic species used in regional afforestation. The proximity between some trees and their distribution in risk areas in the city show how often there is no long-term urban planning, which can cause risks to the physical integrity of properties and citizens when associated with inadequate management of the species.

This objective required both theoretical and methodological investments in the search for evidence which could confirm the theoretical proposal of a new stage of the development of modern society (social and environmental risks) and the challenges involved in analyzing the population-environment relationship in urban contexts. The index that was developed considered four social and spatial dimensions in order to compose a synthetic index of urban dispersion for Brazilian urban agglomerations: Density, Fragmentation, Linearity and Centrality. Results are compatible with the evidence presented in the international literature and suggest new challenges for urban and environmental planning.

Não recebi financiamento The growth history of the city of Campinas contains many of the elements of the colonial city, an important center of sugar and later coffee production in the interior of São Paulo. However, it is from the process of industrialization and the migration of millions of workers from the countryside to the city, including Campinas, from the 1930s onwards, that there is a considerable growth in the urban area of the city. This growth was accentuated between the 1950s and 1970s, with the intensification of industrialization in Brazil, and a subsequent process of industrial deconcentration in São Paulo, which has the Campinas region as one of its main destinations. The urban growth of Campinas contains the contradictions of an industrialization process that took place with low wages and precarious jobs. It is a city that grew in a fragmented and often irregular way, largely as a result of the production of housing for the lower classes. After this period, the last decades of the last century had a much lower urban growth, mainly as a result of economic crises, which cooled and reversed the previous process of industrialization and, consequently, the population's attractiveness. This dissertation seeks to analyze how the expansion of the Urban Spot in the city of Campinas took place, between 2000 and 2020, through the production of thematic maps. Using a Geographic Information System (GIS), a documental and qualitative analysis of the city's urban growth was carried out. Thus, the mechanics of dispersed urban growth were verified in Campinas, with some occupations of previously existing urban voids, mainly from large commercial projects or closed residential projects (closed condominiums and subdivisions), but still with the emergence of New Spots Fragmented urban areas. With the alteration of the Urban Perimeter in 2018, and the transformation of almost the entire rural area of the municipality into an area of urban expansion, there is a tendency for the process of fragmentation and dispersion of the city's growth to strengthen in the next period O histórico de crescimento da cidade de Campinas, carrega muitos dos elementos da cidade colonial, centro importante da produção açucareira e posteriormente cafeeira do interior paulista.

The Brazilian urban growth occurred more intensively from the twentieth century, motivated especially by industrialization and the consequent migration of the peasantry, that is, it was the capitalist influence that consolidated the urban-rural inversion that the country experienced since the 1970's. The objective of this work is to analyze the urban expansion of the municipality of São Miguel/RN through the territorial dynamics associated with it. For that, data on the population, economy, instruments of territorial planning and subdivisions of this municipality were studied during the period from 2000 to 2017, obtained through the digital documentary collection and in municipal organs; and of interviews with city mayor, historian and columnist, head of the department of construction supervision, and residents of city São Miguel/RN. It was verified that the recent urban expansion of the city of São Miguel/RN was influenced by sociodemographic dynamics, growth of the tertiary sector, urban land subdivisions and existing directives in municipal legislation. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a expansão urbana do município São Miguel/RN mediante as dinâmicas territoriais a ele associadas.

- Abstract
The urban growth in recent decades has brought a huge amount of environmental problems, among them stand out: the pollution of rivers in urban areas throughout Brazil by domestic sewage and industries. This work was performed in the urban area of Teresina, between PetronioPortela and Brizola bridges. The study looked at the water quality of the Poti River. Initially the water samples collected had their quality analyzed from the WQI (Water Quality Index) then the values found in the field of nine parameters (physical variables: Turbidity and Temperature; Chemical Variables: BOD, pH, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Total phosphorus, biological variables: Fecal Coliforms) used in the mathematical formula of the product operator WQI were analyzed and compared with the recommendations of potability of Resolution 357/05 of CONAMA framing the Poti River as river of sweet water in Class 2. The WQI values in four collections points ranged from 50.25 in P-0 to 62.44 in the P2. These values allow frame the area in regular good categories. We recommend that the federal, state and municipal legislation, which deals with the preservation of the quality and quantity of water and even the urban land use are respected and enforced by monitoring, supervision and environmental planning in order to decrease the pollution of the Poti River. From the 1960s onwards, the Brazilian savannas (“cerrados”) were the object of government policies that stimulated their population occupation and economic exploitation. Initiatives of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and the Japanese-Brazilian Cooperation Program for Cerrados Development (Prodecer) were decisive for the development of technologies that enabled agricultural expansion in the savannas through the introduction of the so-called “modern agriculture”, attracting expressive migratory flows to those areas. Considering that context, this paper proposes to characterize the migratory processes and the transformations promoted by the occupation dynamics of the savannas in the state of Bahia, in Brazil, using as reference the cities of Barreiras and Luís Eduardo Magalhaes. The research is based on the analysis of specialized bibliography on migrations and studies carried out on the “agribusiness cities” in Western Bahia, on secondary data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and on information from websites of local real estate companies and online newspapers. The results of the occupation process of the savanna area in Bahia pointed to the accelerated growth of cities, the emergence of new cities, the escalation of the urbanization process and the production of socio-spatial segregation.

The objectives of this research are two. The first objective is to investigate the forms, typologies and urban landscapes of the recent expanding areas of the city of Campinas and their similarities with the recent urbanizations of the cities that compose the Metropolitan Region of Campinas. The second objective is to evince the typologies and patterns of form and landscape that form these new urban agglomerations, thus contributing to the construction of a theory of urban mutations. The urbanization of Campinas and the major cities that compose its metropolitan region occurred in a peripheral and fragmented manner, driven mainly by highways, and forming agglomerations that can be understood as urban mutations. Urban mutation is a concept forged by Solà-Morales (2002) that helps understand the contemporary city formation dynamics, which has been taking shape through urban forms and landscapes that are distinct from those found in the traditional urban tissues of its surroundings. The highways are the backbones to urban mutations development. Shopping malls are its most common catalyst element. The hypothesis of this work are two. The first is that the recent urban sprawl of the cities of Campinas and those that form their metropolitan region are conformed by the same set of typologies, forms and landscape that could hardly be understood through the traditional approaches and vocabulary of the discipline. The second is that categories proposed by Solà-Morales can help identify, analyze and describe the recent urban sprawl of these cities. The method adopted was a case study, based on the observation and analysis of satellite images and urban photographs provided by Google Earth and Google Street View and the materials collected during on-site visits. The concept of urban mutation is developed as a key to a spatial reading syntax with which it is possible to emphasize and delimit contemporary urban agglomerations that share the same set of morphological characteristics in order to delimit the study areas. The results show the formation of thirteen urban mutations in Campinas and another twelve urban mutations in the cities of Valinhos, Vinhedo, Indaiatuba, Hortolândia, Sumaré and Paulínia, forming a metropolitan axis where this type of urbanization predominates. The mutations are formed by a group of nine residential typologies and four commercial typologies that are structured in the territory through twenty-nine patterns of implantation and landscape forms. In general, the mutations are peri-urban agglomerations that are connected to the highways through arterial avenues, are formed by walled and controlled residential and commercial typologies, are supported by large shopping centers and department stores, and are immersed in urban voids. These areas contrast with the rest of the city not only because of the minimal public space focused to allow the locomotion of cars, but also because of the absence of commerce and public life, and of the generic, low-expectation landscape Doutorado Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade Doutor em Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade

The objective of this work is to analyze the disintegration of the dendritic urban network model based on accessibility/river as the only existing transport network until the middle of the 20th century, concomitant with the policies of the Brazilian government, in order to occupy the Amazon, including the opening of roads creating a complex model of urban network, restructuring the space, completely changing the regional accessibility standards. Highlighting the analysis of urban growth in the region, in the territorial plans made by the different levels of government for the Amazon, it brings Santarém as a reference city in the urbanization process of the Amazon. The methodology used consisted of bibliographic research and data collection in locus, using the method of life cycle analysis based on the theory of the process-plan with applicability to territorial planning, which deals with the elaboration and implementation of plans between the phases of the process of decision making and investing, being guided by a holistic view. In this context, the results allow us to affirm that there is an urgent need for greater participation by governments, at different scales, in the quest to improve the quality of life of local society, in addition to considering new trends in regional development, through new scenarios and by interference in socioeconomic and environmental dynamics provided, mainly by soybean culture in the vicinity of the municipality of Santarém.

This relation is far from being fully understood, particularly in areas of diffuse urbanization. Based on a multitemporal and multispectral analysis, the purpose of the present investigation is to determine trends in biophysical components change (industrial/quarry; impervious surfaces; bare soil; herbaceous/shrub and/or sparse vegetation; arboreous and/or dense vegetation; and, water) that influence the urban thermal environment; and, therefore to evaluate the climatic effect of urbanization in the municipalities of Braga and Guimarães – both characterized by an historically urban diffuse matrix. The analysis of biophysical components shows a linear increase of the urban tissue between 1984 and 2016, and the proportional decrease of permeable surfaces, being bare soil the most depleted of these. As a result of diffuse urban growth, the study area is no longer characterized by spatially circumscribed hot cores (i.e., surface heat islands), and exhibits a complex and interconnected network of hot (or even very hot) spots, only marginally flanked by cool areas where forest remains. In fact, this type of urban growth promotes a thermal homogenization, which alienates the metaphor of the surface heat island, since it branches in several directions in a rhizomatic configuration, anchored in the road network. Regardless of this common framework, the thermal pattern reflects the particularism of Braga and Guimarães territorial models. Thus, in Braga, a greater confinement of growth within the urban perimeter accentuates the thermal differences between the interior (warm) and the exterior (cooler) of this administrative boundary; whereas in Guimarães the same trend, visible until 2007, fades once again as a result of the ever-present urban and industrial dispersion. In addition, there is an attenuation of neighborhood thermal contrasts that will weaken local climate regulation - based on the breeze system. This will increasingly depend on Monte da Penha in Guimarães and Três Sacromontes in Braga, both interfluvia deeply threatened by the systematic advance of construction., Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - SFRH/BD/111263/2015

Africa is expected to experience the fastest urban growth rate in the world until 2050. By this time, African cities are expected to host an additional 950 million inhabitants. This growth is largely taking place in small and medium-sized cities. The African urban transition brings great opportunities; it also poses significant challenges. African urban agglomerations most often develop without benefiting from policies or investments commensurate with these challenges. Urban planning and management are therefore priority development issues. Understanding urbanization, its drivers, its dynamics and its impacts is essential for designing policies - local, national and continental - that are targeted, inclusive and forward-looking. This report, based on the Africapolis geospatial database (www.africapolis.org) covering 7,600 urban agglomerations from 50 African countries, analyzes urban dynamics from historical, political and environmental angles. It covers all strata of the urban network - from small and intermediate cities to metropolises. It therefore offers more inclusive and targeted policy options that integrate the local, national and regional scales of urban development in line with African realities.

The present work talks about The New Centralities in the Luanda Metropolitan Area: The City of Sequele as a Case Study, with the intention of understanding the contribution of centrality in improving the quality of life of the populations; its role in the urban structure of the Luanda metropolitan area; its contribution to reducing the housing deficit. The accelerated urban growth of Luanda, as a result of the population exodus after the civil war in 2002 and other associated factors, forced the Angolan State to develop new centralities throughout the country in order to reduce the housing deficit and provide an improvement in the quality of life for the populations. The centrality of Sequele is the emblematic example of housing policies. The implementation of the city brings with it several problems. Fieldwork was carried out in the centrality of Sequele and in the center of Luanda; Spatial Planning laws were analyzed, and other regulatory instruments (Plans, Presidential Decrees) that underlie the city's development to better check the situation. Centrality still does not appear as such, due to the fact that there are no several factors that contribute to improving the quality of life of populations.

Water resource management is an essential tool for more conscious and sustainable consumption of water. However, urban growth and the expansion of industrial activities intensify the use of water resources, causing significant impacts on the demand x availability relationship. This accelerated and disordered growth directly impacts the available natural resources, since the occupation of new areas without planning affects the soil, local vegetation and water resources. In this context, the impacts on the available water resources are great, therefore, the management of water resources is fundamental to guarantee the qualitative and quantitative inspection and control of water. The granting of the use of water resources is one of the main management tools established under Law No. 9.433/97 that regulates the National Water Resources Policy. Thus, this study aimed to survey the uses granted by the State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability - SEMAS, to the municipality of Parauapebas-PA, in order to assess which are the main users and main purposes of water use in the region. An analysis was also carried out of changes in natural scenarios, which impact water resources. As a result of this study, it was found that the predominant uses for the municipality are to meet the mining activity, in which the highest flow rates granted are granted. The de-characterization of the soil in urban areas consists of aggravating and compromising the municipality's water resources, causing the silting up of water bodies. The application of greater inspection in installed enterprises will contribute to the adequate planning of urban expansion, as well as the control and use of urban land.

In the context of growing urbanization, changes in territorial configuration manifest dispersed urban expansion processes in coexistence with traditional forms of gradient peripheralization compact city are verified. Under current conditions, are set new territorial structures, both in metropolitan areas and cities of lesser rank. Specific changes characterized by strong demographic and economic dynamics and significant transformations of peri-urban and rural environments are manifested. The study of urban growth in the city of Tandil want to explain the relationships between reconfigurations occurred in areas of recent urban growth and land planning and management. The thesis that guides the inquiry is that the policy favored territorial reconfiguration and low density dispersed territory, in coordination with the dynamics of the housing market and new cultural demands. The land policy had a high capacity to influence new reconfigurations of territory, mainly those associated with extensive, dispersed and low-density growth, because their actions and decisions validate the new models. Rapid urban expansion is one of the distinctive features, most significant of the Latin American cities. The transition suffering societies going from a world dominated by rural dynamics to another immersed in urban areas, usually on the continent often exceed the adaptive capacity of the same. In these circumstances, it is common to find in Latin America a speed overwhelmingly urban growth rates, especially in recent decades; moreover quite marked concentration of urban population in major cities, ensuring that this process of concentration is given by as in almost all countries regardless of their level of development. In this sense, this article is responsible for presenting the most relevant aspects of urban concentration of Popayan, highlighting the space configuration leading elapsed this century; in which identified historical trends of settlement, the major migration flows to the city and sets out some of the main reasons that lead people to settle in the area rururban of it. The study of the growth of large cities, in the urban periphery or the peri-urban areas specifically, it relates to environmental degradation due to urbanization, if it is estimated that since 2008 more than half of the world population living in urban areas, this sector is affected as it presents overcrowding, segregation and deterioration of physical conditions, which will impact on the social aspects within localities. This great urban growth has usually developed with the lack of environmental planning. So it is necessary to include urban development, guidelines towards environmental conservation and rehabilitation of the territory. The future of cities will depend largely on the actions taken now. As urban development inevitably requires planning urban settlements through sustainable development so as to provide alternative technologies, based on the reality of Latin American countries. In the peripheral area of the Metropolitan Zone of Guadalajara (Mexico), is taken as a case study of the town of La Venta del Astillero, which by its nature allows access and functionality to develop a set of criteria and indicators to urban sustainability, which can take as a model for other communities in the urban periphery. URBAN growth , *CARTOGRAPHY , *SPATIAL analysis (Statistics) , *GEOGRAPHIC information systems , *SPACE surveillance , *REMOTE-sensing images - Abstract
The second half of the 20th century witnessed the rapid expansion of built-up areas practically all over the world. In Portugal, this phenomenon took place particularly along the coastal strip and around its two main cities, Lisbon and Porto. Economic and demographic growth led to processes of urban expansion, which in turn bolstered the development of extensive urbanized continuums, contributing to the consolidation of the metropolitan areas and transformation of landscapes. Greater knowledge of the recent processes of urbanization is of interest to the geographical sciences, as well as to applied fields such as spatial planning. Since their initial development, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and automatic mapping tools have opened new horizons in Cartography, with a potential which should be taken advantage also in the study of landscapes and, particularly, of urban growth. From a morphological point of view, a study of urban expansion necessarily has to be based on multitemporal mapping. More than successive static pictures, multitemporal mapping produces a dynamic image of the process, providing support to ensuing explanatory studies. In Portugal, the studies on urban expansion are limited either by the reduced scale employed or by their reduced focus (studies of small areas or single cities). Increasingly in use, techniques based on the classification and/or interpretation of satellite images produce multitemporal cartography at much larger scale and coverage. However, these techniques have limitations, given their recent development: it is not possible to map built-up areas prior to 1980. The limitations in producing multitemporal urban cartography at regional and sub-regional scales could be mitigated by an approach integrating information from old editions of topographic mapping in a GIS, which could thus track the process of urban growth for a certain time frame. In this paper, this approach was employed to prepare a multitemporal cartographic database of built areas, with three moments comprising the second half of the 20th century. These databases also served to produce a set of "morphodensimetric" indicators related to built-up areas, for the three temporal moments, leading to analyses on the pace and forms of recent urbanization in the area under study (the Porto metropolis). We believe that the approach proposed can open new perspectives for cartographic production, as well as for the study and understanding of recent urbanization processes and its implications on the landscape dynamics. URBAN growth , *URBANIZATION , *CITIES & towns -- Population distribution , *POPULATION - Abstract
During the last decade, the distribution and redistribution of the population have been increasingly important as a subject matter of social interest at national and regional scale. In this way, the present research falls within the studies that analyse the changes that have taken place in the population settlement system and its consequences on the spatial organization of the urban net. The aim of the present work is to try to describe the changes in the distribution of the population in the southwest cities in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. It follows a quantitative approach focused on the methodological aspects of the population census data for the period 1960-2001. Population size categories will be applied in the study of these southwest cities in Buenos Aires province. It will also take into account the functional role of middle--sized settlements (MSS) in the transformations of the regional space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The expansion of the cities' peripheries is one of the many consequences of urban growth. In these places, not infrequently occupied by the low-income population, the occurrence of problems related to environmental sanitation and the socioeconomic situation tends to contribute to the emergence of several diseases that, gradually, compromise the quality of life of its inhabitants. In this sense, this study aimed to analyze the environmental health conditions in the UBSF territory of the Jardim Europa I, a neighborhood in the city of Uberlândia / MG, and its relationship with the health of its population. For that, initially, a theoretical framework was elaborated on the thematic centered on the process of urban peripheralization, environmental health, Unified Health System and territorialization of health. In operational terms, data were collected at the UBSF in order to identify the number of users, sex, main reasons for searching the BFHU, diseases with higher occurrences and period of higher prevalence. In the scope of the UBSF, field observations were made through on-site visits for the recognition of environmental conditions and photographic records. To identify the population, questionnaires were applied to UBSF users and residents of the neighborhood, containing dimensions of the social aspects, the living environment, and the neighborhood. Data analysis showed that the most prevalent schooling is full secondary education and the main reasons for searching the BFHU are consultations, examinations and vaccination. Concerning the environmental-related discomforts, burns, garbage on vacant lots and in inappropriate places should be highlighted. Concerning the morbidities that affected the participants in the analyzed period, these were cough, diarrhea and allergy. This study concludes that there is an urgent need for the development and implementation of public policies that aim to improve the neighborhood's environmental conditions, not only for environmental care but also for improving the health of the population.
