The subjectivity of a multitude of dimensions that affect health requires systemic approaches, study designs that integrate population health data and the narratives of the population, as well as specific methodological approaches that allow the capture of evidence from social and community processes. The use of participatory methodologies in urban health diagnoses is key to capturing the different perspectives and knowledge of the local context, contributing to a more complete analysis of reality. This methodological note presents the development of the participatory process carried out as part of the Bilbao health diagnosis; the identification of participating agents and selection criteria, the invitation to participate and the dynamics developed. Sharing experiences that have incorporated participatory processes is necessary to foster its methodological development, and thus, to promote it practice., (Copyright © 2020 SESPAS. The role of urban parks has gained interest in urban health research. However, there are currently no clear definitions of these urban assets as exposure variable across the literature, which do have implications for the analysis. In this study, we exhibit an approach to design a comprehensive spatial database of urban parks in cities, using the example of Madrid. This approach consisted of the combination of different spatial databases containing information about parks and green spaces in the city of Madrid, and then a spatial processing to keep only those that met the selected criteria for urban park definition: accessible for pedestrians (to have at least one path around or through the area) and with the minimum size suitable (bigger than 0.50ha) for physical activity. Objective: To analyse the similarities and differences in the discourse surrounding the conceptualisation of health and the perceived health assets and needs in the neighborhoods and city of Bilbao in a participatory process., Method: Participatory workshops were held with professionals, neighbors and associated citizens. The differences in perceptions of the three content blocks were analysed on the basis of the health model referred, as well as the typologies -of a more individual or structural nature- of identified health needs and assets., Results: The conceptualisation of health from a biopsychosocial perspective was clearer among professionals, although both profiles pointed to the importance of its social determinants. The formulation of needs and assets in health by the neighbors was made from the impact on their daily life and from a position of users with respect to a service provider administration. Among the associated citizens and professionals, intermediate and structural determinants were more frequently mentioned, as well as issues related to the administration's scope of action., Conclusions: The inclusion of the multiplicity and diversity of perceptions in planning is key to good local government for health. Objective: Know the number and percentage of chest X-rays (CXR) referred to a Primary Care Imaging Center and Primary Care Emergency Center to rule out lung involvement due to SARS-CoV-2 from March 16 to May 15, 2020, in an urban health area of about 400,000 reference population inhabitants. To determine the percentage of cases suggestive of pulmonary involvement due to SARS-CoV-2 CXR and the percentage of cases without pulmonary involvement of the total CXR derived in the reference population from March 16 to May 15, 2020., Material and Methods: Design observational descriptive study. The radiological criteria to classify probable pulmonary infection by SARS-CoV-2 (RxT[+]) are: 1) focal opacity; 2) faint focal opacity; 3) faint diffuse increase in density; 4) focal or diffuse interstitial pattern, and 5) focal or diffuse interstitial alveolus pattern., Results and Conclusions: Maintain CXR as a useful screening method in the middle stages of the disease, when CXR is more sensitive to detect lung involvement due to SARS-CoV-2. Objective: Qualitative methods may help to understand features related to health urban inequalities as a way to include citizens' perceptions of their neighbourhoods in relation to their health-related behaviours. The aim of this article is to describe the methods and design of a qualitative urban health study., Methods: The Heart Healthy Hoods (HHH) analyses cardiovascular health in an urban environment using mixed methods: electronic health records, quantitative individual questionnaires, physical examination, semi-structured Interviews (SSIs), focus groups (FGs) and participatory technics such as photovoice. This article focuses on the HHH qualitative methods and design. A case study was used to select three neighbourhoods in Madrid with different socioeconomic levels: low, medium, and high. The selection process for these three neighbourhoods was as follows: classification of all Madrid's neighbourhoods (128) according to their socioeconomic level; after ranking this classification, nine neighbourhoods, three by socioeconomic level, were short-listed; different urban sociology criteria and non-participant observation were used for the final selection of three neighbourhoods. After selecting the three neighbourhoods, thirty SSIs were held with residents and six SSIs were held with key informants. Finally, twenty-nine FGs will be conducted over the course of 8 months, between May and December of 2018., Conclusions: Systematization in the selection of neighbourhoods and the use of adequate techniques are essential for the qualitative study of urban health inequalities., (Copyright © 2018 SESPAS. Alcohol urban environment has been associated with individual alcohol behaviors. We are constantly exposed to a wide variety of alcohol products, its marketing and promotion and signs of alcohol consumption that may influence alcohol-drinking behaviors. Local administration is responsible for health-related areas, and evidence of the health impact of urban policies is available. Barriers and recommendations for the full implementation of health promotion in cities and neighbourhoods have been described. The barriers to the promotion of urban health are broad: the lack of leadership and political will, reflectes the allocation of health outcomes to health services, as well as technical, political and public misconceptions about the root causes of health and wellbeing. Ideologies and prejudices, non-evidence-based policies, narrow sectoral cultures, short political periods, lack of population-based health information and few opportunities for participation limit the opportunities for urban health. Local policies on early childhood, healthy schools, employment, active transport, parks, leisure and community services, housing, urban planning, food protection and environmental health have great positive impacts on health. Key tools include the political prioritisation of health and equity, the commitment to «Health in All Policies» and the participation of communities, social movements and civil society. This requires well organised and funded structures and processes, as well as equity-based health information and capacity building in the health sector, other sectors and society. We conclude that local policies have a great potential for maximising health and equity and equity. The recent pandemic outbreak warned of the urgent need for closer interaction between health and spatial planning. The relationship between urban space and health has been widely proven and led to the emergence of new concepts, such as neurourbanism, an interdisciplinary field of research that aims to explain the relationship between mental health and the well-being of city life. The embryonic state of these interdisciplinary research fields requires further contributions to their consolidation and guidelines for practitioners and policymakers. The main aim of this article is to contribute to the discussion through reflections on public spaces and urban health. A critical analysis was conducted to respond to the following specific objectives: 1) to highlight the importance of public space for the promotion of quality of life; 2) to reinforce the awareness that the urban environment affects mental health and well-being; 3) to propose an organisation of health impact factors (determinants of urban health) that works as a tool for objective health assessment and monitoring in cities and; 4) to reinforce work on the importance of neurourbanism as an interdisciplinary science that unites neuroscience and urban planning. Despite the empirical association between health (physical and mental) and the built environment recently demonstrated Covid-19 pandemic, scarce research and evidence-based recommendations have been produced towards healthier cities. Resumen Este artículo presenta el marco teórico sobre algunos de los problemas de las ciudades del siglo XXI como son el cambio climático, la urbanización y el envejecimiento de la población, con el fin de establecer los antecedentes que guían la investigación del confort térmico y acústico de las personas mayores en espacios públicos de la ciudad. Para ello, se analizan las políticas internacionales, los conceptos de urbanismo y todas sus vertientes contemporáneas que han surgido como producto de la adaptación de las ciudades a los fenómenos demográficos y climáticos, así como su influencia en la salud de la población. Adicionalmente se conceptualiza el fenómeno del envejecimiento de la población, la realidad mundial, regional y local de España en cuanto a este proceso demográfico y las políticas públicas que se han planteado como medida de adaptación en las ciudades. Finalmente, se explican los conceptos sobre confort térmico y acústico, identificando el estado de la cuestión y las principales variables que influyen, mediante un resumen de la revisión bibliográfica sistemática, sobre la percepción de confort térmico y acústico de adultos mayores y sus diferencias con otros grupos de edad. Abstract This article presents the theoretical framework of some of the problems of 21st century cities, such as climate change, urbanisation and population ageing, in order to establish the background that guides research into the thermal and acoustic comfort of older people in public spaces in the city. To this end, international policies, urban planning concepts and all their contemporary aspects that have arisen as a result of the adaptation of cities to demographic and climatic phenomena, as well as their influence on the health of the population, are analysed. In addition, it conceptualises the phenomenon of population ageing, the global, regional and local reality of Spain in terms of this demographic process and the public policies that have been put forward as a measure of adaptation in cities. Finally, the concepts of thermal and acoustic comfort are explained, identifying the state of the art and the main variables that influence, through a summary of the systematic literature review, the perception of thermal and acoustic comfort of older adults and their differences with other age groups.

Resumen El presente trabajo aborda el reto del envejecimiento activo desde la perspectiva del diseño urbano: ¿son los espacios públicos de las ciudades españolas “amigables” para las personas mayores? Se ha realizado una caracterización de las necesidades específicas del adulto mayor y los elementos de diseño del espacio público que deberían tenerse en cuenta en proyectos de renovación urbana. Esta caracterización, junto con una revisión de guías y documentos técnicos, ha dado como resultado la selección de 25 elementos para la evaluación de un caso de estudio en el casco urbano de la ciudad consolidada de las 3 ciudades españolas más pobladas. Los resultados muestran un mínimo de habitabilidad y accesibilidad de los espacios públicos, pero un déficit en los parámetros de calidad para favorecer entornos “amigables” con las personas mayores, como zonas estanciales con bancos ergonómicos, elementos de apoyo cada cierta distancia o señalética accesible para orientarse en las calles. Abstract This study addresses active ageing from the urban perspective: are public spaces in Spanish cities age-friendly? A characterization of the older adult has been done identifying the elements of the public space that should be considered in projects of urban renovation. From this characterization, as well as a review of guides and technical documents, 25 elements have been proposed in order to evaluate one study case in the urban city centre of the 3 largest cities in Spain. Results show a minimum quality of habitability and accessibility in the built environment. However, there is a lack of quality parameters in order to promote healthy and age-friendly urban environments, such as ergonomic benches in places to stay, minimum distance between supports or signals to support way-finding in streets.

We aimed to characterize the satisfaction and perceptions of the residents of Lima about different aspects of urban life that can affect their quality of life and health, identifying differences by socioeconomic status (SES) and changes over time. A secondary data analysis of the "Lima Cómo Vamos" survey was conducted between 2010 and 2019. Results are reported through percentages, with differences between SES for each year and between years. In 2019, satisfaction and perceptions were mostly unfavorable, and have decreased by up to 30% over time. People with lower SES had more unfavorable evaluations and with greater reductions over time. This dissatisfaction and unfavorable perceptions reveal deficiencies in public services and urban conditions that could negatively affect the quality of life and health, making it necessary to design and implement policies that reduce socioeconomic gaps and improve the health of Lima citizens. Tuberculosis remains an urgent issue on the urban health agenda, especially in low- and middle-income countries. There is a need to develop and implement innovative and effective solutions in the tuberculosis diagnostic process. In this article, We describe the importance of artificial intelligence as a strategy to address tuberculosis control, particularly by providing timely diagnosis. Besides technological factors, the role of socio-technical, cultural and organizational factors is emphasized. The eRx tool involving deep learning algorithms and specifically the use of convolutional neural networks is presented as a case study. eRx is a promising artificial intelligence-based tool for the diagnosis of tuberculosis; which comprises a variety of innovative techniques involving remote X-ray analysis for suspected tuberculosis cases. Objective: To describe the seroprevalence of and risk factors for brucellosis and leptospirosis in urban citizens with backyard breeding in the district of José Leonardo Ortiz, Chiclayo. Methods: Cross-sectional study including 90 citizens during the month of October and December of 2016. IgM and IgG specific antibodies for brucellosis and leptospirosis were determined using the indirect ELISA method. Factors associated with these diseases were gathered using a structural survey. Results: The seroprevalence of brucellosis and leptospirosis was 2.2% and 28.9%, respectively. The most common environmental features of the population were that 73.3% use latrines 83.3% had contact with stagnant water and 62.2% had contact with rodents. No association between the variables looked for and these two diseases was found. Conclusions: We found a high seroprevalence of leptospirosis but a low prevalence of brucellosis in this setting. We suggest performing longitudinal studies that may identify risk factors to prevent these diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To describe the prevalence of "active" (self-propelled, human-powered) transportation in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region over the past decade. Methods. MEDLINE, Excerpta Medica (Embase), SportDiscus, Lilacs, MediCarib, Web of Science, OVID, CINAHL, Scopus, Google Scholar, National Transportation Library, and TRIS/TRID were searched for articles on active transportation published between January 2003 and December 2014 with (at least) a title and abstract in English, Portuguese, or Spanish. Research was included in the study if the two reviewing authors agreed it 1) was conducted in an adult sample (≥ 18 years old), 2) was designed to be representative of any LAC area, and 3) reported at least one measure of active transportation. Reference lists of included papers and retrieved reviews were also checked. A total of 129 key informants (87 scientific experts and 42 government authorities) were contacted to identify additional candidate publications. Two other authors extracted the data independently. Results. A total of 10 459 unique records were found; the full texts of 143 were reviewed; and a total of 45 studies were included in the study, yielding estimates for 72 LAC settings, most of which were in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia. No eligible studies were found for the years 2003-2004, resulting in a 10-year study time frame. Estimates were available for walking, cycling, or the combination of both, with a high degree of heterogeneity (heterogeneity index (I2) ≥ 99%). The median prevalence of active transportation (combining walking and cycling) was 12.0%, ranging from 5.1% (in Palmas, Brazil) to 58.9% (in Rio Claro, Brazil). Men cycled more than women in all regions for which information was available. The opposite was true for walking. Conclusions. Prevalence of active transportation in LAC varied widely, with great heterogeneity and uneven distribution of studies across countries, indicating the need for efforts to build comprehensive surveillance systems with standardized, timely, and detailed estimates of active transportation in order to support policy planning and evaluation. OBJECTIVE: This paper explores the impact of contextual variables at the neighborhood level on a health marker in the city of Hermosillo, Mexico and discusses the importance of collaboration between planners and health professional to minimize the negative effect of contextual factors on urban health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Few studies in Mexico have assessed health outcomes at the intra-urban scale and their interaction with neighborhood-level contextual variables. Using spatial analysis and geographical information systems, the paper explores the association between infant mortality and an index of socio-environmental vulnerability used to measure urban contextual factors. RESULTS: Two high infant mortality clusters were detected within neighborhoods characterized by relatively good environmental conditions and one in a neighborhood with a poor environment. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show the clustering of high infant mortality areas and some association with built environment factors in Hermosillo. The results support the need to reconnect public health and urban planning as a way to create healthier environments in Mexican cities.OBJETIVO: Este artículo explora el papel de factores contextuales a nivel de colonia sobre un marcador de salud en la ciudad de Hermosillo, México y discute la importancia de la colaboración entre planificadores urbanos y profesionales de la salud para minimizar el impacto negativo de factores contextuales sobre la salud de la población urbana. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Pocos estudios en México han evaluado las condiciones de salud a escala intra-urbana y su interacción con variables contextuales a nivel de colonia. Utilizando análisis espacial y sistemas de información geográfica, el artículo explora la relación entre mortalidad infantil y un índice de vulnerabilidad socio-ambiental construido para medir factores contextuales urbanos. RESULTADOS: Dos conglomerados de alta mortalidad infantil fueron detectados dentro de colonias caracterizadas por condiciones ambientales relativamente buenas y uno en una colonia con un ambiente pobre. CONCLUSIONES: Los resultados indican la formación de conglomerados de alta mortalidad infantil y una conexión moderada con factores del medio ambiente construido en Hermosillo. Estos resultados apoyan la necesidad de reconectar la salud pública y la planeación urbana como un método para crear ambientes más sanos en las ciudades de México.

Risk communication should assess the emotional reaction of the audience against specific threats. The relationship between risk perception to events of urban health and a risk assessment index that is constructed from the likelihood and severity of these events was analyzed in health surveillance officials in Paraguay (n = 32). 87.5% were graduates and 30%, epidemiologists. Social networks (78.1%) and online media (75%) were cited as the first choices of information. In five of the seven evaluated events (dengue, chikungunya, obesity, HIV and acute respiratory infections), risk perception was significantly lower than the collectively risk assessment (Kruskal-Wallis, p <0.05) and in one of the events (attacks), the perception was lower than the personal risk assessment. "Vulnerability", "fear" and "possible catastrophe" were associated with greater perceived risk (Mann-Whitney test, p <0.05). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2005, the Government of the Province of Québec, Canada, adopted the Climate Change Action Plan for 2006-2012. The Institut national de santé publique du Québec (National Institute of Public Health of Québec), charged with implementing the health adaptation component of the Plan, worked to mitigate urban heat islands (UHI) by funding and evaluating 40 pilot projects. These projects explored different methods of fighting UHIs by greening cities in a participative and mobilizing approach led mainly by non-governmental organizations and municipalities. An assessment of temperatures before and after implementing various methods demonstrated that some actions enabled significant gains of coolness and more efficiently mitigated heat (reduction of concrete/asphalt surfaces, increasing vegetation, etc.). An assessment of quality of life showed that projects were positively received by users, especially by those living in vulnerable situations. A lifecycle analysis showed that from the environmental perspective, UHI mitigation measures that do not require fertilization or maintenance are preferable. Interpersonal violence has become one of the main public health issues in Latin American cities. This article presents a framework for sociological interpretation that operates on three levels, expressed in the factors that originate, foment, or facilitate violence. Macro-social factors include: social inequality due to the increase in wealth versus poverty; the paradox of more schooling with fewer employment opportunities; increasing expectations and the impossibility of meeting them; changes in family structure; and loss of importance of religion in daily life. At the meso-social level the analysis highlights: increased density in poor areas and urban segregation; masculinity cult; and changes in the local drug market. The micro-social level includes: an increase in the number of firearms; alcohol consumption; and difficulties in verbal expression of feelings. The article concludes with an analysis of how violence is leading to the breakdown not only of urban life but also of citizenship as a whole in Latin America.La violencia interpersonal se ha convertido en uno de los principales problemas de salud pública de las ciudades de América Latina. El artículo presenta una interpretación sociológica de la violencia en tres niveles: (a) macro-sociales ­ la desigualdad social debida al incremento de la riqueza y la pobreza; la paradoja del mayor nivel educativo de las personas, pero las menores oportunidades de empleo, el incremento de las expectativas y de la imposibilidad de satisfacerlas; los cambios en la familia y la pérdida de importancia de la religión en la vida cotidiana de las personas; (b) meso-sociales ­ el incremento de la densidad en las zonas pobres y la segregación urbana, la cultura de la masculinidad y los cambios en el mercado local de la droga; (c) micro-sociales ­ el incremento de las armas de fuego, el consumo de alcohol y las dificultades de expresión verbal de los sentimientos por las personas. El artículo concluye con un análisis sobre cómo la violencia está llevando no sólo a la pérdida de las ciudades, sino a la ciudadanía en América Latina.

Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de los grados de actividad física global en las personas de 18 a 65 años de la ciudad de Bogotá (Colombia) e identificar los factores asociados con la regularidad en la actividad. Métodos: Se realizó una encuesta poblacional, aplicada a 3.000 adultos residentes en la ciudad de Bogotá durante el año 2003, seleccionados en una muestra probabilística multietápica. Los niveles de actividad física fueron determinados por medio de la versión abreviada del IPAQ. La aplicación de un modelo de regresión logístico permitió identificar los factores asociados con la regularidad en la actividad. Resultados: La prevalencia ajustada de personas regularmente activas fue del 36,8%. Después del ajuste de las potenciales variables de confusión, las posibilidades de ser regularmente activo fueron mayores en los varones (odds ratio [OR] = 1,62; intervalo de confianza [IC] del 95%,1,31-2,01) y en personas con una autopercepción del estado de salud buena o muy buena (OR = 1,87; IC del 95%, 1,41-2,49). Las posibilidades fueron menores en las personas de los grupos de edad de 30-49 y 50-65 años (OR = 0,78; IC del 95%, 0,63-0,96 y OR = 0,60; IC del 95%, 0,43-0,82, respectivamente) y en aquellas cuya principal actividad en los últimos 30 días era buscar trabajo (OR = 0,71; IC del 95%, 0,51-0,97) o realizar labores del hogar (OR = 0,72; IC del 95%, 0,54-0,96). En futuros trabajos se deberá establecer, en el contexto de ciudades latinoamericanas, si es pertinente determinar, además de los grados de actividad física global, los indicadores específicos en cada dominioObjective: To determine the prevalence of physical activity levels in adults aged 18 to 65 years in Bogotá city and identify the factors associated with regular physical activity. Methods: We conducted a population-based, cross-sectional survey in 3,000 adult residents of Bogotá in 2003 who were selected through a multistage probabilistic sample. Physical activity levels were determined using the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Factors associated with regular physical activity were identified by logistic regression models. Results: The adjusted prevalence of persons undertaking regular physical activity was 36.8%. After adjustment for potential confounders, regular physical activity was more likely in men (odds ratio [OR] = 1.62; 95% CI, 1.31-2.01) and in those whose self-perceived health status was good or very good (OR = 1.87; 95% CI, 1.41-2.49) and was less likely in those aged 30-49 years or 50-65 years (OR = 0.78; 95% CI, 0.63-0.96, and OR = 0.60; 95% CI, 0.43-0.82, respectively) and in those whose main activity in the previous 30 days was searching for a job (OR = 0.71; 95% CI, 0.51-0.97) or carrying out household tasks (OR = 0.72; 95% CI, 0.54-0.96). In women, unlike men, age groups showed no association with regular physical activity. Conclusion: This study shows gender differences in the prevalence of physical activity levels and associated factors. Future studies should establish, in the context of Latin American cities, whether it is appropriate to determine specific measures in each domain, in addition to overall physical activity levels
