NICE NG89 recommendations for extended pharmacological thromboprophylaxis - is it justified and is it cost effective: a rebuttal from the British Society for Haematology In the landmark low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) studies of thromboprophylaxis in medical patients, MEDENOX (Samama I et al i , [9]) and PREVENT (Leizorovicz I et al i , [5]), enoxaparin and dalteparin were administered for 6-14 and 14 days respectively. Forcing extended thromboprophylaxis in large groups of lower risk patients is likely to increase the frequency of bleeding without impacting materially on hospital associated VTE rates.
