Aim: Global patterns in species distributions such as the latitudinal biodiversity gradient are of great interest to ecologists and have been thoroughly studied. Whether such a gradient holds true for the proportion of species associated with key ecotypes such as forests is however unknown. Identifying a gradient and ascertaining the factors causing it could further our understanding of community sensitivity to deforestation and uncover drivers of habitat specialization. The null hypothesis is that proportions of forest species remain globally consistent, though we hypothesize that proportions will change with differences in ecotype amount, spatial structure, and environmental stability. Here we study whether the proportion of forest species follows a latitudinal gradient, and test hypotheses for why this may occur. Location: Worldwide. Time period: Present. Major taxa studied: Terrestrial vertebrates. Methods: We combined range maps and habitat use data for all terrestrial vertebrates to calculate the proportion of forest species in an area. We then used data on the global distribution of current, recent historical, and long‐term historical forest cover, as well as maps of global disturbances and plant diversity to test our hypotheses using generalized linear models. Results: We identified a latitudinal gradient in the proportion of forest species whereby the highest proportions occurred at the equator and decreased polewards. We additionally found that the proportion of forest species increased with current forest cover, historical deforestation, plant structural complexity, and habitat stability. Despite the inclusion of these variables, the strong latitudinal gradient remained, suggesting additional causes of the gradient. Main conclusions: Our findings suggest that the global distribution of the proportion of forest species is a result of recent ecological, as well as long‐term evolutionary factors. Interestingly, high proportions of forest species were found in areas that experienced historical deforestation, suggesting a lagged response to such perturbations and potential extinction debt. Natural G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) rarely have an additional transmembrane (TM) helix, such as an artificial TM-linker that can unite two class A GPCRs in tandem as a single-polypeptide chain (sc). Here, we report that three groups of TM-linkers exist in the intervening regions of natural GPCR fusions from vertebrates: (1) the original consensus (i.e., consensus 1) and consensus 2~4 (related to GPCR itself or its receptor-interacting proteins); (2) the consensus but GPCR-unrelated ones, 1~7; and (3) the inability to apply 1/2 that show no similarity to any other proteins. In silico analyses indicated that all natural GPCR fusions from Amphibia lack a TM-linker, and reptiles have no GPCR fusions; moreover, in either the GPCR-GPCR fusion or fusion protein of (GPCR monomer) and non-GPCR proteins from vertebrates, excluding tetrapods, i.e., so-called fishes, TM-linkers differ from previously reported mammalian and are avian sequences and are classified as Groups 2 and 3. Thus, previously reported TM-linkers were arranged: Consensus 1 is [T(I/A/P)(A/S)–(L/N)(I/W/L)(I/A/V)GL(L/G)(A/T)(S/L/G)(I/L)] first identified in invertebrate sea anemone Exaiptasia diaphana (LOC110241027) and (330-SPSFLCI–L–SLL-340) identified in a tropical bird Opisthocomus hoazin protein LOC104327099 (XP_009930279.1); GPCR-related consensus 2~4 are, respectively, (371-prlilyavfc fgtatg-386) in the desert woodrat Neotoma lepida A6R68_19462 (OBS78147.1), (363-lsipfcll yiaallgnfi llfvi-385) in Gavia stellate (red-throated loon) LOC104264164 (XP_009819412.1), and (479-ti vvvymivcvi glvgnflvmy viir-504) in a snailfish GPCR (TNN80062.1); In Mammals Neotoma lepida, Aves Erythrura gouldiae, and fishes protein (respectively, OBS83645.1, RLW13346.1 and KPP79779.1), the TM-linkers are Group 2. Bolson Tortoises (Gopherus flavomarginatus) are a keystone species whose burrows are a unique microhabitat for a large number of vertebrates in the Chihuahuan Desert. Through the construction of burrows, Bolson Tortoises modify the habitat, resulting in greater structural complexity. This in turn results in a greater number of niches and therefore in greater biodiversity, providing not only shelter from predators, adverse climatic conditions, and fires, but ideal conditions for reproduction, socialization and feeding of various species. The potential distribution of Bolson Tortoises, eight mammal, four bird, and seven reptile species that use Bolson Tortoise burrows was modeled for the present, as well as for 2050 and 2070. The maximum entropy model (Maxent) included 19 bioclimatic layers and altitude. The models suggest a decrease in the potential distribution of G. flavomarginatus (its distribution was reduced by 85.95% from the present scenario to 2070) and 17 out of the 19 species of vertebrates that use their burrows, in both projected scenarios. This indicates climate change would negatively affect not only species with restricted or micro-endemic distributions, such as Bolson Tortoises, but also those of wide distribution, such as Coyotes (Canis latrans), Striped Skunks (Mephitis mephitis), and Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata). The models also indicate that the percentage of geographical overlap of ≥12 of vertebrate species with G. flavomarginatus will decrease drastically by 2070, thereby reducing the availability of microhabitat (G. flavomarginatus burrows) for these species. Reduced availability of microhabitats could affect the ability of these accompanying vertebrates to hide from predators or adverse weather conditions, as well as to find sites for reproduction or feeding (Lepus californicus, Athene cunicularia, M. mephitis, C. latrans, Lynx rufus, Vulpes macrotis, and M. mephitis). Our work emphasizes the importance of conservation actions to help Bolson Tortoises (G. flavomarginatus), which in turn will benefit other species of mammals, birds, and reptiles that require the presence of tortoise burrows as microhabitats. Environmental factors, such as temperature, precipitation, and elevation, explain most of the variation in species richness at the global scale. Nevertheless, richness patterns may have different drivers across taxa and regions. To date, a comprehensive global examination of how various factors such as climate or topography drive patterns of species richness across all terrestrial vertebrates, using the same methods and predictors, has been lacking. Recent advances in species‐distribution data allowed us to model and examine the richness pattern of all terrestrial tetrapods comprehensively. We tested the relationship between environmental and biogeographical variables and richness of amphibians (5983 species), birds (9630), mammals (5004), reptiles (8939), and tetrapods as a whole, globally, and across biogeographical realms. We studied the effects of climatic, ecological, and biogeographic drivers using generalized additive models. Richness patterns and their environmental associations varied among taxa and realms. Overall precipitation was the predominant richness predictor. However, temperature was more important in realms where both cold and warm conditions exist. In the Indomalayan realm, elevational range was very important. Richness patterns of mammals, birds, and amphibians were strongly related to precipitation whereas reptile richness was mostly associated with temperature. Our results support the universal importance of precipitation but also suggest that future global‐scaled research should incorporate other relevant variables other than climate, such as elevational range, to gain a better understanding of the richness–environment relationship. Although the footprints have been described in a number of studies, providing, for example, new insights into the origin of dinosaurs, there are few studies focusing on the bones. Here, we describe new amphibian and reptile material from the Buntsandstein fluvial sandstones of early Olenekian age exposed at Stryczowice on the north-eastern margin of the Holy Cross Mountains. These finds include fragmentary cranial specimens referred to as Trematosauridae gen. et sp. indet. and Procolophonidae gen. et sp. indet. Faunal differences between Stryczowice and the best-known Polish Olenekian vertebrate-bearing site of Czatkowice 1 near Kraków support heterogeneity in the Early Triassic vertebrate distribution across Pangea. The diet of the Pharaoh Eagle-Owl, Bubo ascalaphus, was investigated based on 338 pellets collected from caves and underground caves in Ara'r region, northern Saudi Arabia. Small mammals constituted the highest number of consumed prey (75.75%), followed by arthropods (20%), birds (2.9%) and reptiles (1.26%). The Libyan Jird, Meriones libycus, was the most consumed rodent (26.46%) followed by Sundevall's Jird, Meriones crassus (20.47%), while the least were Cheesman Gerbil, Gerbillus cheesmani, and Wagner's Gerbil, Gerbillus dasyurus. At least three species of scorpions, Androctonus crassicauda, Compsbuthus sp. and Scorpio sp., and two species of reptiles (Ptyodactylus hasselquistii and Trapellus agnetae) were recovered. Study of owl pellet contents proved to be a valuable tool to study species composition in unexplored regions. Also, our findings substantiate the fact that the Pharaoh Eagle-Owl is an opportunistic species that adapts to available preys in its habitat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) are semiaquatic rodents native to North American wetlands, including marshes, ponds, and slow-moving streams. In water, muskrats commonly build houses and feeding platforms with herbaceous vegetation and mud. These island structures benefit other species, but few studies have examined the roles these structures play for a community of wetland vertebrates. We studied the diversity, frequency of occurrence, and behaviors of vertebrates on muskrat structures in the Sandhill Region of Nebraska. From camera traps, we recorded over 37,700 observations of vertebrates, representing 57 species, including amphibians, mammals, raptors, reptiles, songbirds, and waterfowl. Vertebrate behaviors on structures included basking, copulating, displaying, foraging, grooming, perching, preening, raising young, resting, and vocalizing. In the Nebraska Sandhills, muskrats created island habitats beneficial to both migratory and local species, with structures appearing of particular importance to life history functions of many waterfowl and turtles. Muskrats represent ecosystem engineers, as their structures were the only natural islands in wetlands due to the general lack of trees and rocks in the region. We frequently observed the use of structures by multiple species simultaneously, further suggesting that island structures are limited in Sandhill wetlands. Our study highlights the great number of vertebrates that use muskrat structures for a host of life history and ecological functions. Throughout the distri - bution of muskrats, many other species likely use and rely on these island structures, as muskrats are an integral component of many wetland ecosystems in North America. Understanding the functionality and frequency of use for these structures by other wildlife is essential when managing populations of muskrats and the wetlands these mammals inhabit. Information about the composition of pelagic communities generally lags far behind that of coastal communities, and largely derives from fisheries data that do not reflect small and non-target species. Spatiotemporal vertebrate diversity and variability associated with environmental drivers across a 3,486 km2 area of a highly productive pelagic marine ecosystem off Pacific Panama (7.583°N, 78.200°W) were described between August 2019 and March 2020 using drifting pelagic baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS), a non-invasive fishery-independent sampling technique. From ~ 240 h of footage, we observed 26 taxa from 17 families, including 1 mammal, 3 reptile, 5 elasmobranch, and 17 teleost species. Community composition varied spatiotemporally with higher taxa richness and total abundance during the wet (April–December) than dry season (January–March). Total abundance also increased with increasing distance from shore/seafloor depth. Spatiotemporal assemblage differences were largely driven by the relative abundance of the small zooplanktivorous fishes: Psenes cyanophrys, Caranx caballus, and Decapterus spp. Psenes cyanophrys and juvenile C. caballus were commonly observed during the wet season and their abundances increased with distance from shore/seafloor depth. Decapterus spp. were observed year-round but were observed more often and in greater numbers with increasing with distance from shore/seafloor depth. This study demonstrates the practical application of drifting pelagic BRUVS to detect a diverse range of pelagic vertebrates and environmentally driven changes in pelagic communities to fill knowledge gaps in data-limited species and regions. In vertebrates, gliding evolved as a mode of energy‐efficient locomotion to move between trees. Gliding vertebrate richness is hypothesised to increase with tree height and decrease with tree density but empirical evidence for this is scarce, especially at a global scale. Here, we test the ability of tree height and density to explain species richness of gliding vertebrates globally compared to richness of all vertebrates, while controlling for biogeographical and climatic factors. We compiled a global database of 193 gliding amphibians, mammals and reptiles and created maps of species richness from extent‐of‐occurrence range maps. We paired species richness of gliding vertebrates with spatial estimates of global tree height and density and biogeographical regions (BGRs) as covariates to account for ecological and historical differences among global regions. We used univariate linear and multivariate generalised linear mixed‐effect models to evaluate relationships between species richness and tree height and density, and the interaction between both variables. We found that richness of all gliding vertebrate species increased significantly with tree height, while results for richness of gliding amphibians, mammals and reptiles alone indicated mixed responses especially among different BGRs. Mixed‐effect models mirrored these results for richness of all gliding species combined, while also revealing the mixed response to tree height and denisyt of richness of gliding amphibians, mammals and reptiles. Richness of all vertebrate species – gliding and non‐gliding – also increased with tree height and density, but at a lesser rate than richness of gliding vertebrates, indicating a greater influence of forest structure on richness patterns of gliding vertebrates. Our results support hypotheses stating that gliding in vertebrates evolved globally in tall forests as energy‐efficient locomotion between trees, and provide further evidence for the importance of forest structure to explain the distribution of gliding vertebrates. Despite discussions extending back almost 160 years, the means by which Madagascar's iconic land vertebrates arrived on the island remains the focus of active debate. Three options have been considered: vicariance, range expansion across land bridges, and dispersal over water. The first assumes that a group (clade/lineage) occupied the island when it was connected with the other Gondwana landmasses in the Mesozoic. Causeways to Africa do not exist today, but have been proposed by some researchers for various times in the Cenozoic. Over‐water dispersal could be from rafting on floating vegetation (flotsam) or by swimming/drifting. A recent appraisal of the geological data supported the idea of vicariance, but found nothing to justify the notion of past causeways. Here we review the biological evidence for the mechanisms that explain the origins of 28 of Madagascar's land vertebrate clades [two other lineages (the geckos Geckolepis and Paragehyra) could not be included in the analysis due to phylogenetic uncertainties]. The podocnemid turtles and typhlopoid snakes are conspicuous for they appear to have arisen through a deep‐time vicariance event. The two options for the remaining 26 (16 reptile, five land‐bound‐mammal, and five amphibian), which arrived between the latest Cretaceous and the present, are dispersal across land bridges or over water. As these would produce very different temporal influx patterns, we assembled and analysed published arrival times for each of the groups. For all, a 'colonisation interval' was generated that was bracketed by its 'stem‐old' and 'crown‐young' tree‐node ages; in two instances, the ranges were refined using palaeontological data. The synthesis of these intervals for all clades, which we term a colonisation profile, has a distinctive shape that can be compared, statistically, to various models, including those that assume the arrivals were focused in time. The analysis leads us to reject the various land bridge models (which would show temporal concentrations) and instead supports the idea of dispersal over water (temporally random). Therefore, the biological evidence is now in agreement with the geological evidence, as well as the filtered taxonomic composition of the fauna, in supporting over‐water dispersal as the mechanism that explains all but two of Madagascar's land‐vertebrate groups. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) has become increasingly popular in ecological studies, but its efficacy for assessing overall terrestrial vertebrate biodiversity is unclear. To quantify this, its performance for species detection must be directly compared to that obtained using traditional observer-based monitoring (OBM). Here, we review such comparisons across all major terrestrial vertebrate classes and identify factors impacting PAM performance. From 41 studies, we found that while PAM-OBM comparisons have been made for all major terrestrial vertebrate classes, most comparisons have focused on birds (65%) in North America (52%). PAM performed equally well or better (61%) compared to OBM in general. We found no statistical difference between the methods for total number of species detected across all vertebrate classes (excluding reptiles); however, recording period and region of study influenced the relative performance of PAM, while acoustic analysis method and which method sampled for longer overall showed no impact. Further studies comparing PAM performance in non-avian vertebrates using standardised methods are needed to investigate in more detail the factors that may influence PAM performance. While PAM is a valuable tool for vertebrate surveys, a combined approach with targeted OBM for non-vocal species should achieve the most comprehensive assessment of terrestrial vertebrate communities. Shifts between native and alien climatic niches pose a major challenge for predicting biological invasions. This is particularly true for insular species because geophysical barriers could constrain the realization of their fundamental niches, which may lead to underestimates of their invasion potential. To investigate this idea, we estimated the frequency of shifts between native and alien climatic niches and the magnitude of climatic mismatches using 80,148 alien occurrences of 46 endemic insular amphibian, reptile, and bird species. Then, we assessed the influence of nine potential predictors on climatic mismatches across taxa, based on species' characteristics, native range physical characteristics, and alien range properties. We found that climatic mismatch is common during invasions of endemic insular birds and reptiles: 78.3% and 55.1% of their respective alien records occurred outside of the environmental space of species' native climatic niche. In comparison, climatic mismatch was evident for only 16.2% of the amphibian invasions analyzed. Several predictors significantly explained climatic mismatch, and these varied among taxonomic groups. For amphibians, only native range size was associated with climatic mismatch. For reptiles, the magnitude of climatic mismatch was higher for species with narrow native altitudinal ranges, occurring in topographically complex or less remote islands, as well as for species with larger distances between their native and alien ranges. For birds, climatic mismatch was significantly larger for invasions on continents with higher phylogenetic diversity of the recipient community, and when the invader was more evolutionarily distinct. Our findings highlight that apparently common niche shifts of insular species may jeopardize our ability to forecast their potential invasions using correlative methods based on climatic variables. Aim: There has been considerable interest in niche conservatism, the idea that ecological variables are similar among related species. Much research has focused on climatic niches of recently diverged species, rather than deeper timescales or non‐climatic niche axes. Furthermore, it has been suggested that conservatism disappears over deeper timescales, and is greater in alpha niche traits (like diet and microhabitat) than beta niche variables (like climate). Here, we test these latter two ideas by comparing patterns of phylogenetic conservatism among 10 niche variables across major clades of land vertebrates. Location: Global. Time Period: Present to 350 million years ago. Major Taxa Studied: Tetrapods, including amphibians, mammals, lepidosaurs (including lizards and snakes), turtles, crocodilians and birds. Methods: The 10 niche variables included four alpha niche components (diet, diel activity, habitat, body temperature) and six beta niche components (related to climatic temperature and precipitation). We analysed these variables on time‐calibrated phylogenies with similar taxon sampling (~1700 species), using phylogenetic signal (lambda) to estimate conservatism, along with the D statistic and estimates of evolutionary rates. Results: Phylogenetic signal was generally strong across all variables, with lambda generally >0.80 (with 1.0 representing maximum signal). Nevertheless, mean phylogenetic signal was lower in beta niche traits than alpha niche traits (based on lambda and especially the D statistic), and alpha niche traits showed significantly slower rates of evolution. Main Conclusions: We address two long‐held views in the literature on niche conservatism, rejecting one but supporting the other. We show that phylogenetic signal does not disappear over deep timescales for many important niche variables, even over 350 million years. We also generally support greater conservatism in alpha niche traits than beta niche traits over hundreds of millions of years, a pattern that was previously suggested (but not explicitly tested) based on closely related species. Aim: The identification of biogeographical zones has been fundamental in broadscale biodiversity analyses over the last 150 years. If processes underlying bioregionalization, such as climatic differences, tectonics and physical barriers, are consistent across vertebrate clades, we expect that groups with more similar ecological characteristics would show more similar bioregions. Lack of data has so far hampered the delineation of global bioregions for reptiles. Therefore, we integrated comprehensive geographic distribution and phylogenetic data of lepidosaurian reptiles to delineate global reptile bioregions, compare determinants of biogeographical boundaries across terrestrial vertebrates and test whether clades showing similar responses to environmental factors also show more similar bioregions. Location: Global. Time Period: Present. Major Taxa Studied: Reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals. Methods: For reptiles, we used phylogenetic beta diversity to quantify changes in community composition, and hierarchical clustering to identify biogeographic 'realms' and 'regions'. Then, we assessed the determinants of biogeographical boundaries using spatially explicit regression models, testing the effect of climatic factors, physical barriers and tectonics. Bioregions of reptiles were compared to those of other vertebrate clades by testing the overall similarity of the spatial structure of bioregions, and the match of the position of biogeographical boundaries. Results: For reptiles, we identified 24 evolutionarily unique regions, nested within 14 realms. Biogeographical boundaries of reptiles were related to both climatic factors and past tectonic movements. Bioregions were very consistent across vertebrate clades. Bioregions of reptiles and mammals showed the highest similarity, followed by reptiles/birds and mammals/birds while amphibian bioregions were less similar to those of the other clades. Main Conclusions: The overall high similarity among bioregions suggests that bioregionalization was affected by similar underlying processes across terrestrial vertebrates. Nevertheless, clades with different eco‐physiological characteristics respond somewhat differently to the same environmental factors, resulting in similar but not identical regionalizations across vertebrate clades. Located along the boundary of two zoogeographic provinces, and with the highest peaks and deepest valleys on Earth, Nepal is a center of adaptive radiation for many taxa. Early zoological research was mostly focused on high-profile large mammals due to availability of funding and policy priorities, but knowledge gaps remain for most other vertebrate taxa. Technologies ranging from genetic mapping to GPS, GIS, digital cameras and microtransmitters have advanced with time and greatly expanded research capacities. Here, we present our suggestions of research needs for the lesser terrestrial vertebrate fauna of Nepal and the broader Himalayan region, pointing out knowledge gaps and suggesting where to go from here. The growing numbers of Nepali researchers focusing on small mammalian and avian research is encouraging, but the status of many taxa remains unknown and much of the country remains under-surveyed for breeding and migratory populations. Major knowledge gaps persist for reptiles and amphibians and for the role of local wildlife markets in exploitation. Background: The origin of different human emotions directed towards animals (whether in the utilitarian, affective, conflictual, or cosmological context) is strongly influenced by sociocultural factors, although our genetic predispositions also play an important role in the origin of these emotions. Such emotions guide people's representations of different species, which in turn affect their attitudes toward them. For this reason, understanding the factors that guide such attitudes becomes a key element in making conservationist decisions. In this sense, the main objective of this study was to analyze how sociocultural characteristics and bioecological representations can influence students' attitudes of empathy or antipathy towards vertebrate species; as well as which classes and species are related to greater and lesser support in people for their conservation. Methods: To do so, 667 interviews were conducted with students from urban (n = 1) and rural (n = 2) schools in the Brazilian semi-arid region. We used mixed generalized linear models (GLMM) to examine the effect of social factors and bioecological representations on empathy and antipathy attitudes and multiple factor analysis (MFA) to examine the relationship between the biological characteristics of the animals (positive or negative) and the attitudes toward them (antipathetic or empathetic). Results: Through GLMM, we found that students from the urban area and from lower school levels are more extreme in their responses, more frequently expressing both empathy and antipathy towards wild animals. Regarding gender, women had a higher frequency of responses associated with aversion than men for species perceived as dangerous and poisonous (p < 0.001). Through the MFA, we found greater support (empathy) for the conservation of fish species (31.56%), birds (29.37%) and mammals (25.94%), with emphasis on the Red-cowled cardinal (Paroaria dominicana) and clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) species, and less support (antipathy) for reptile and amphibian species such as rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) and horned frogs (Ceratophrys joazeirensis). Conclusions: The attitudinal ambivalence reflected by varying empathy for certain species and antipathy to others has important implications for wildlife conservation. Understanding the socioeconomic factors and emotions that influence attitudes towards animals can enable integrating educational strategies for the conservation of species, especially those which are culturally important. Solute carrier 12 (Slc12) is a family of electroneutral cation-coupled chloride (Cl−) cotransporters. Na+/K+/2Cl− (Nkcc) and Na+/Cl− cotransporters (Ncc) belong to the Nkcc/Ncc subfamily. Human and mouse possess one gene for the Na+/Cl− cotransporter (ncc gene: slc12a3), whereas teleost fishes possess multiple ncc genes, slc12a3 (ncc1) and slc12a10 (ncc2), in addition to their species-specific paralogs. Amphibians and squamates have two ncc genes: slc12a3 (ncc1) and ncc3. However, the evolutionary relationship between slc12a10 and ncc3 remains unresolved, and the presence of slc12a10 (ncc2) in mammals has not been clarified. Synteny and phylogenetic analyses of vertebrate genome databases showed that ncc3 is the ortholog of slc12a10, and slc12a10 is present in most ray-finned fishes, coelacanths, amphibians, reptiles, and a few mammals (e.g., platypus and horse) but pseudogenized or deleted in birds, most mammals, and some ray-finned fishes (pufferfishes). This shows that slc12a10 is widely present among bony vertebrates and pseudogenized or deleted independently in multiple lineages. Notably, as compared with some fish that show varied slc12a10 tissue expression profile, spotted gar, African clawed frog, red-eared slider turtle, and horse express slc12a10 in the ovaries or premature gonads. In horse tissues, an unexpectedly large number of splicing variants for Slc12a10 have been cloned, many of which encode truncated forms of Slc12a10, suggesting that the functional constraints of horse slc12a10 are weakened, which may be in the process of becoming a pseudogene. The Middle Triassic remains a poorly understood time in the evolution of land vertebrates. Here, we report a new Ladinian-age vertebrate assemblage from Miedary (southern Poland). It consists of more than 20 taxa including fish (four species of Hybodontiformes, cf. Gyrolepis, Redfieldiiformes, 'Thelodus', Saurichthys, Serrolepis, Prohalecites, Ptychoceratodus), amphibians (Mastodonsaurus, Gerrothorax, Plagiosternum, chroniosuchian Bystrowiella), and reptiles (Owenettidae, Blezingeria, Nothosaurus, Tanystropheus, an additional, yet unidentified tanystropheid, the doswelliid Jaxtasuchus, and another archosauromorph, as well as eight archosauriform tooth morphotypes). Preliminary comparisons suggest biogeographic and environmental similarities with roughly contemporaneous localities known from the southwestern part of the Germanic Basin. Among differences in these two areas are the presence of a new armored archosauromorph and a surprising abundance of Tanystropheus remains in the new Polish site. Miedary is currently the richest source of three-dimensionally preserved Tanystropheus material in the world, which will be crucial for a better understanding of the preferred environment and lifestyle of this highly specialized reptile. Differentiated sex chromosomes are believed to be evolutionarily stable, while poorly differentiated sex chromosomes are considered to be prone to turnovers. With around 1700 currently known species forming ca 15% of reptile species diversity, skinks (family Scincidae) are a very diverse group of squamates known for their large ecological and morphological variability. Skinks generally have poorly differentiated and cytogenetically indistinguishable sex chromosomes, and their sex determination was suggested to be highly variable. Here, we determined X-linked genes in the common sandfish (Scincus scincus) and demonstrate that skinks have shared the same homologous XX/XY sex chromosomes across their wide phylogenetic spectrum for at least 85 million years, approaching the age of the highly differentiated ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes of birds and advanced snakes. Skinks thus demonstrate that even poorly differentiated sex chromosomes can be evolutionarily stable. This study describes the diversity of the species received for medical evaluation at the Exotic Pet and Wildlife Teaching Hospital in Mexico; identifying the most common non-traditional companion animals owned, the frequency of the species received along the years, and which of those correspond to native Mexican wildlife. This retrospective descriptive study comprised 8 619 patient records from 2009 to 2019. During the period analyzed, 129 species were identified, 60 of these being native Mexican wildlife. Most of the patients received were mammals (56.36 %) followed by reptiles (38.73 %), and 4.91 % remaining were composed by birds, amphibian, fish and invertebrate species. Eight species contributed to the highest percentage of the records (79.88 %), being the red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) the most common (18.71 %). The number of annual records varied through the period with a trend for increased demand recently. It was possible to identify changes in the frequency of visits of different species over the study period, which allowed us to determine that the preference for the maintenance of some species in captivity has decreased. While linear infrastructures, such as roads and power lines, are vital to human development, they may also have negative impacts on wildlife populations up to several kilometres into the surrounding environment (infrastructure‐effect zones, IEZs). However, species‐specific IEZs are not available for the vast majority of species, hampering global assessments of infrastructure impacts on wildlife. Here, we synthesized 253 studies worldwide to quantify the magnitude and spatial extent of infrastructure impacts on the abundance of 792 vertebrate species. We also identified the extent to which species traits, infrastructure type and habitat modulate IEZs for vertebrate species. Our results reveal contrasting responses across taxa based on the local context and species traits. Carnivorous mammals were generally more abundant in the proximity of infrastructure. In turn, medium‐ to large‐sized non‐carnivorous mammals (>1 kg) were less abundant near infrastructure across habitats, while their smaller counterparts were more abundant close to infrastructure in open habitats. Bird abundance was reduced near infrastructure with larger IEZs for non‐carnivorous than for carnivorous species. Furthermore, birds experienced larger IEZs in closed (carnivores: ≈130 m, non‐carnivores: >1 km) compared to open habitats (carnivores: ≈70 m, non‐carnivores: ≈470 m). Reptiles were more abundant near infrastructure in closed habitats but not in open habitats where abundances were reduced within an IEZ of ≈90 m. Finally, IEZs were relatively small in amphibians (<30 m). These results indicate that infrastructure impact assessments should differentiate IEZs across species and local contexts in order to capture the variety of responses to infrastructure. Our trait‐based synthetic approach can be applied in large‐scale assessments of the impacts of current and future infrastructure developments across multiple species, including those for which infrastructure responses are not known from empirical data. The interactive effects of multiple threats are one of the main causes of biodiversity loss, yet our understanding of what predisposes species to be impacted by multiple threats remains limited. Here we analyse a global dataset of over 7000 marine, freshwater and terrestrial vertebrate populations, alongside trait, threat and geographical data, to identify the factors influencing the number of threats a species is subjected to at the population level. Out of a suite of predictors tested, we find that body mass and latitude both are broadly available for vertebrate species and influence the number of threats a population is subjected to. Larger‐bodied species and those nearer the equator are typically affected by a higher number of threats. However, whilst this pattern broadly holds across ecosystems for most taxa, amphibians and reptiles show opposing trends. We suggest that latitude and body mass should be considered as key predictors to identify which vertebrate populations are likely to be impacted by multiple threats. Here we describe new marine vertebrate remains, mainly isolated teeth, from the Upper Cretaceous (Coniacian-Santonian) of near Mardin, SE Turkey. This is the first report in this area of ptychodontid sharks (elasmobranchs), enchodontid teleosts (actinopterygians) and mosasaurid squamates (reptiles). The respective taxa Ptychodus cf. mortoni, Enchodus sp., Platecarpus sp. and Mosasaurinae indet. are described. These new data improve our knowledge on early Late Cretaceous marine vertebrate faunas from the Arabic Platform, classically known previously mostly from the Maastrichtian outcrops of Middle-East and Northwestern Africa, and extend the palaeobiogeographical distribution of these taxa into the western part of the Mediterranean Tethys, confirming their cosmopolitan status. The Solomon Islands host a diverse terrestrial vertebrate fauna which has played a formative role in the development of speciation theory. Yet, despite over a century of biological exploration in the region, there are many islands for which we have incomplete knowledge of the vertebrate fauna. In 2019, we spent 20 days on Tetepare Island in the Western Province, Solomon Islands. Tetepare has a long history of conservation action by local communities and it is now the largest uninhabited tropical island in the world. We recorded 57 species of birds, 13 mammals, 5 amphibians, and 21 reptiles. Of these, we documented six species for the first time on Tetepare by western scientists: one frog, three non-avian reptiles, and two mammals. These findings point to a continued need for basic biological inventory work to inform research, local conservation efforts, and to increase published knowledge of the biodiversity in the Solomon Islands. The Amazon forest has the highest biodiversity on Earth. However, information on Amazonian vertebrate diversity is still deficient and scattered across the published, peer‐reviewed, and gray literature and in unpublished raw data. Camera traps are an effective non‐invasive method of surveying vertebrates, applicable to different scales of time and space. In this study, we organized and standardized camera trap records from different Amazon regions to compile the most extensive data set of inventories of mammal, bird, and reptile species ever assembled for the area. The complete data set comprises 154,123 records of 317 species (185 birds, 119 mammals, and 13 reptiles) gathered from surveys from the Amazonian portion of eight countries (Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela). The most frequently recorded species per taxa were: mammals: Cuniculus paca (11,907 records); birds: Pauxi tuberosa (3713 records); and reptiles: Tupinambis teguixin (716 records). The information detailed in this data paper opens up opportunities for new ecological studies at different spatial and temporal scales, allowing for a more accurate evaluation of the effects of habitat loss, fragmentation, climate change, and other human‐mediated defaunation processes in one of the most important and threatened tropical environments in the world. Functional amyloids are fibrillary proteins with a cross-β structure that play a structural or regulatory role in pro- and eukaryotes. Previously, we have demonstrated that the RNA-binding FXR1 protein functions in an amyloid form in the rat brain. This RNA-binding protein plays an important role in the regulation of long-term memory, emotions, and cancer. Here, we evaluate the amyloid properties of FXR1 in organisms representing various classes of vertebrates. We show the colocalization of FXR1 with amyloid-specific dyes in the neurons of amphibians, reptiles, and birds. Moreover, FXR1, as with other amyloids, forms detergent-resistant insoluble aggregates in all studied animals. The FXR1 protein isolated by immunoprecipitation from the brains of different vertebrate species forms fibrils, which show yellow-green birefringence after staining with Congo red. Our data indicate that in the evolution of vertebrates, FXR1 acquired amyloid properties at least 365 million years ago. Based on the obtained data, we discuss the possible role of FXR1 amyloid fibrils in the regulation of vital processes in the brain of vertebrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Comparative neurobiologists have long wondered when and how the dorsal pallium (e.g., mammalian neocortex) evolved. For the last 50 years, the most widely accepted answer has been that this structure was already present in the earliest vertebrates and, therefore, homologous between the major vertebrate lineages. One challenge for this hypothesis is that the olfactory bulbs project throughout most of the pallium in the most basal vertebrate lineages (notably lampreys, hagfishes, and lungfishes) but do not project to the putative dorsal pallia in teleosts, cartilaginous fishes, and amniotes (i.e., reptiles, birds, and mammals). To make sense of these data, one may hypothesize that a dorsal pallium existed in the earliest vertebrates and received extensive olfactory input, which was subsequently lost in several lineages. However, the dorsal pallium is notoriously difficult to delineate in many vertebrates, and its homology between the various lineages is often based on little more than its topology. Therefore, we suspect that dorsal pallia evolved independently in teleosts, cartilaginous fishes, and amniotes. We further hypothesize that the emergence of these dorsal pallia was accompanied by the phylogenetic restriction of olfactory projections to the pallium and the expansion of inputs from other sensory modalities. We do not deny that the earliest vertebrates may have possessed nonolfactory sensory inputs to some parts of the pallium, but such projections alone do not define a dorsal pallium. Identifying indicator taxa is a solution to the problem of a lack of diverse data. However, the variation between studies on richness correlations (RCs) among taxa from different climate regions makes the application value of indicator taxa questionable. Few studies have compared the RCs among climatic regions in a single study, leaving the variation in RCs and the underlying ecological drivers among climatic regions unknown. In this study, data were compiled on vascular plants, vertebrates (including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians), and environmental factors across 219 nature reserves located in subtropical and temperate regions of China to examine RCs among taxonomic groups and underlying ecological mechanisms. Results showed that the climatic region could affect between-taxon correlations in species richness and that the effectiveness of vascular plants as suitable indicator taxa for vertebrates varied with the climatic region and target taxa. Energy (temperature and evapotranspiration) and habitat heterogeneity (area and elevation range) were ecological drivers of RCs among taxonomic groups in the subtropical and temperate regions. The differences in the effect of abiotic factors on RCs among taxonomic groups caused the difference in RCs between subtropical and temperate regions. Our findings provide new evidence for understanding the variation of RCs and the underlying mechanisms and highlight the positive role of climatic variables and habitat heterogeneity in determining RCs between vascular plants and vertebrates. Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are the germline stem cells that are essential for the maintenance of spermatogenesis in the testis. However, it has not been sufficiently understood in amphibians, reptiles, and fish because numerous studies have been focused mainly on mammals. The aim of this review is to discuss scientific ways to elucidate SSC models of nonmammals in the context of the evolution of testicular organization since rodent SSC models. To further understand the SSC models in nonmammals, we point out common markers of an SSC pool (undifferentiated spermatogonia) in various types of testes where the kinetics of the SSC pool appears. This review includes the knowledge of (1) common molecular markers of vertebrate type A spermatogonia including putative SSC markers, (2) localization of the markers on the spermatogonia that have been reported in previous studies, (3) highlighting the most common markers in vertebrates, and (4) suggesting ways of finding SSC models in nonmammals. To cope with temperature fluctuations, molecular thermosensors in animals play a pivotal role in accurately sensing ambient temperature. Transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) is the most established cold sensor. In order to understand how the evolutionary forces bestowed TRPM8 with cold sensitivity, insights into both emergence of cold sensing during evolution and the thermodynamic basis of cold activation are needed. Here, we show that the trpm8 gene evolved by forming and regulating two domains (MHR1-3 and pore domains), thus determining distinct cold-sensitive properties among vertebrate TRPM8 orthologs. The young trpm8 gene without function can be observed in the closest living relatives of tetrapods (lobe-finned fishes), while the mature MHR1-3 domain with independent cold sensitivity has formed in TRPM8s of amphibians and reptiles to enable channel activation by cold. Furthermore, positive selection in the TRPM8 pore domain that tuned the efficacy of cold activation appeared late among more advanced terrestrial tetrapods. Interestingly, the mature MHR1-3 domain is necessary for the regulatory mechanism of the pore domain in TRPM8 cold activation. Our results reveal the domain-based evolution for TRPM8 functions and suggest that the acquisition of cold sensitivity in TRPM8 facilitated terrestrial adaptation during the water-to-land transition. The present account offers a generalized view of the evolution of process of terminal differentiation in keratinocytes of the epidermis in anamniotes, indicated as keratinization, into a further differentiating process of cornification in the skin and appendages of terrestrial vertebrates. Keratinization indicates the prevalent accumulation of intermediate filaments of keratins (IFKs) and is present in most fish and amphibian epidermis and inner epithelia of all vertebrates. During land adaptation, terrestrial vertebrates evolved a process of cornification and keratinocytes became dead corneocytes by the addition of numerous others proteins to the IFKs framework, represented by keratin‐associated proteins (KAPs) and corneous proteins (CPs). Most of genes coding for these types of proteins are localized in chromosomal loci different and un‐related from those of IFKs, and CPs originated from a gene cluster indicated as epidermal differentiation complex. During the evolution of reptiles and birds, the epidermis and corneous derivatives such as scales, claws, beaks and feathers mainly accumulate a type of CPs that overcome IFKs and containing a 34 amino acid beta‐sheet core indicated as corneous beta proteins, formerly known as beta‐keratins. Mammals did not evolve a beta‐sheet core in their CPs and KAPs but instead produced numerous cysteine‐rich IFKs in their epidermis and specialized KAPs in hairs, claws, nails, hooves and horns. The mangrove forests found within the island are particularly important, being crucial habitats for endemic and globally threatened vertebrates. However, a comprehensive overview of the island's vertebrates known to utilise mangrove habitats has not yet been studied. This review uses available publications to categorise Sri Lankan vertebrates inhabiting mangroves according to the five vertebrate groups: ichthyofauna, amphibians, reptiles, avifauna, and mammals; 440 different species were subsequently categorised. A number of caveats have been addressed, and this review has given improved insight into the scale of diversity the island's mangrove habitats hold. This study will form the baseline for further mangrove vertebrate research, particularly in species groups where quantitative evidence and conservation statuses currently lacks. Knowledge about the biodiversity of Baja California has been obtained mainly from natural protected areas (NPAs), while some unprotected natural areas have been poorly studied. The Sierra Cucapá in the northeast of the peninsula is one example. The objectives of this study are 1) to integrate existing knowledge of bird, mammal, and reptile diversity in Cucapá from public databases, citizen science platforms, and information generated from fieldwork, 2) to identify the spatial distribution of records in the study area, 3) to compare the composition of vertebrate species of Cucapá with that of NPAs of northern part of the peninsula, and 4) to assess the biological conservation value of Cucapá. We obtained records of 150 species of native vertebrates (102 birds, 34 mammals, and 14 reptiles) of which 10 species of birds, four mammals, and seven reptiles are included in a risk extinction category. The different sources of information contributed in a complementary way to the species inventories. Large areas in western and northern Cucapá lack records. The total difference in species composition between Cucapá and nearby NPAs ranged between 58 and 69% for birds, 61 and 79% for mammals, and 69 and 87% for reptiles. The species richness of Cucapá, its particular species composition, the presence of species in risk extinction categories, and the number and size of unexplored areas indicate that this area represents an opportunity for biological conservation in the northern part of the Peninsula. Optimising conservation efforts requires an accurate record of the extant species as well as their geographic distributions. Nevertheless, most current conservation strategies start from an incomplete biodiversity inventory. Argentina has an extraordinary diversity of species, however, until now an updated inventory of its fauna has not been carried out. In this context, the main objective of this work is to present the results of the first national inventory of vertebrate species. Experts from each major vertebrate taxonomic group assembled and compiled its respective inventory. The information gathered included taxonomic rank, conservation status, endemism and geographic distribution. Species richness and representativeness were calculated for each taxonomic group, distinguishing between native, endemic and exotic, for each Argentinian province. Our results show Argentina harbours 3,303 species: 574 marine fish, 561 freshwater fish, 177 amphibians, 450 reptiles, 1,113 birds, and 428 mammals. Native species constitute 98.1% of the total taxa. The results achieved were spatially represented showing a pattern of higher richness from north to south and from east to west. Species considered as threatened account for 17.8% and 15.2% are endemic. There are five Extinct species. These results provide key information on developing strategies and public policies at the national and provincial levels and constitute a tool for the management and conservation of biodiversity. The colonisation of freshwater and marine ecosystems by land vertebrates has repeatedly occurred in amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals over the course of 300 million years. Functional interpretations of the fossil record are crucial to understanding the forces shaping these evolutionary transitions. Secondarily aquatic tetrapods have acquired a suite of anatomical, physiological and behavioural adaptations to locomotion in water. However, much of this information is lost for extinct clades, with fossil evidence often restricted to osteological data and a few extraordinary specimens with soft tissue preservation. Traditionally, functional morphology in fossil secondarily aquatic tetrapods was investigated through comparative anatomy and correlation with living functional analogues. However, in the last two decades, biomechanics in palaeobiology has experienced a remarkable methodological shift. Anatomy‐based approaches are increasingly rigorous, informed by quantitative techniques for analysing shape. Moreover, the incorporation of physics‐based methods has enabled objective tests of functional hypotheses, revealing the importance of hydrodynamic forces as drivers of evolutionary innovation and adaptation. Here, we present an overview of the latest research on the locomotion of extinct secondarily aquatic tetrapods, with a focus on amniotes, highlighting the state‐of‐the‐art experimental approaches used in this field. We discuss the suitability of these techniques for exploring different aspects of locomotory adaptation, analysing their advantages and limitations and laying out recommendations for their application, with the aim to inform future experimental strategies. Furthermore, we outline some unexplored research avenues that have been successfully deployed in other areas of palaeobiomechanical research, such as the use of dynamic models in feeding mechanics and terrestrial locomotion, thus providing a new methodological synthesis for the field of locomotory biomechanics in extinct secondarily aquatic vertebrates. Advances in imaging technology and three‐dimensional modelling software, new developments in robotics, and increased availability and awareness of numerical methods like computational fluid dynamics make this an exciting time for analysing form and function in ancient vertebrates. Ongoing warming-induced permafrost thawing and human pressures in alpine regions have a profound impact on biodiversity and are expected to further aggravate by the end of the century. However, their future impacts on the alpine species remain largely unexplored. Here, we present an assessment of terrestrial vertebrates (mammals, amphibians, birds, and reptiles) exposures to future permafrost degradation and human modification on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) by 2090. The projections showed that the threat of permafrost degradation and human modification is mostly concentrated in the northwestern and southeastern QTP, respectively. Under a high-emissions scenario (Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 5–8.5), about 10 % of terrestrial vertebrates' geographical range are exposed to highly risk regions of permafrost degradation. More importantly, 49.7 % of terrestrial vertebrates (54.5 % of mammals, 61.2 % of amphibians, 39.8 % of birds, and 43.3 % of reptiles) are predicted to become imperiled due to human modification in >50 % of their habitat. Our study highlights national stewardship for species that are in particular need of reimagining proactive biodiversity conservation planning to avoid detrimental impacts of future permafrost degradation and human modification. • Permafrost degradation threatens alpine species and protection planning is neglected. • 10 % of land vertebrates' range is exposed to a high risk of permafrost degradation. • Half of land vertebrates are predicted to become imperiled due to human modification. • Critical areas for future threats occur in the southeast and northwest of the QTP. The Late Pliocene fossil locality of Las Higueruelas (central Spain) has been known for many decades; however, in this paper, we describe the fauna of small-sized vertebrates (fish, amphibians, squamate reptiles, and rodents) for the first time based on pre-existing collections in the Museo Provincial de Ciudad Real. In addition to updating the taxonomical nomenclature of previously-published faunal lists, we also report the new occurrences of four fish taxa, a lizard (Lacertidae indet.), and several snakes (Malpolon gr. monspessulanus-mlynarskii , cf. Zamenis scalaris , and a large-sized indetermined viperid, probably from the Oriental vipers group or genus Daboia). The only rodent is identified as Stephanomys minor. Overall this assemblage indicates the predominance of open, dry environments and shrubby vegetation close to more grassy and riparian woodland under warm (15.1 ± 1.8 °C) and semi-arid (556 ± 40 mm) conditions. There was 4-month period of summer aridity similar to a modern Mediterranean climate. Most of the aquatic taxa (Pleurodeles , Pelophylax , and Natrix) were able to tolerate brackish environments, and the amphibians suggest the presence of deep and stable water bodies, with a long hydroperiod and aquatic vegetation, necessary for reproduction. Las Higueruelas is confirmed as being assigned to subchron 2An.1r (3.116–3.032 Ma) like the Camp dels Ninots Konservat-Lagerstätten (Girona, Spain). Palaeoclimate reconstruction for both localities is consistent with the later stages of the mid-Piacenzian Warm Period. Palaeontological comparison between the two sites may support either a small difference in age, or most probably, varied climate zonations within the Iberian Peninsula, with a north-eastern area allowing a local survival of Early Pliocene taxa that are absent from Las Higueruelas. An inventory of the non-avian terrestrial vertebrate species found within the 493-hectare land area of the UP Diliman campus is presented. Visual encounter surveys for amphibians and reptiles, as well as mist-netting and trapping for mammals, were conducted last August 2019 to early February 2020 on selected study grids on campus. To determine habitat associations, the species richness of each vertebrate class (i.e., amphibia, reptilia, and mammalia) was analyzed with habitat characteristics of the grid using regression analysis. Based on the surveys and recent records (2015 onwards) in literature, a total of 33 species were recorded: seven amphibians, 15 reptiles, and 11 mammals. Comparison with historical records from 1998 revealed that an additional two amphibian species, seven reptile species, and six mammalian species have been sighted within the area since 2015. However, a fork-tongued frog, falling under the genus Fejervarya, and four reptilian species that had previously been recorded within the study sites were not observed. Habitat association analysis revealed that building area is correlated with species richness, with reptilian species richness being positively correlated with it. Overall, this study shows that the UP Diliman campus supports considerable urban biodiversity despite recent developments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The postcranial skeleton of the gliding neodiapsid reptile Coelurosauravus elivensis (Lower Sakamena Formation, ?upper Permian, southwestern Madagascar) is re-described in detail based on all previously referred specimens. The exquisite preservation of the material provides three-dimensional details of the individual bones, which are missing in the Laurasian weigeltisaurid material. A new skeletal reconstruction of C. elivensis is proposed including the first reconstruction of a weigeltisaurid reptile in lateral view. The re-examination of the material highlights interspecific differences in the postcranium of weigeltisaurids, in particular in the trunk and patagial spars. These animals have long been considered as arboreal and gliding reptiles. However, new information on the postcranium of C. elivensis reveals strong similarities with both extant and extinct quadrupeds specialized for a clinging arboreal lifestyle. Additionally, the presence of an additional phalanx in the fifth digit of the manus is now attested for all weigeltisaurids where this region is preserved. We suggest that this morphology could have allowed weigeltisaurids to grasp their patagium as observed in the extant gliding agamid Draco. Weigeltisaurids are thus the earliest known gliding vertebrates and some of the first tetrapods with an obligatory arboreal lifestyle, but also represent the only known vertebrates with a hyperphalangy aligned with a gliding apparatus. Background: Species with direct uses, such as sources of food, shelter, building material and medicine tend to have more specific local names. But could the same apply for species that people fear? Methods: To address this question, here we explore the behavior and perception of species diversity and dangerousness through a survey of 1037 households in nine villages in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique. We compare people's knowledge of snakes with that of lizards and amphibians. Results: We find that northern Mozambicans know four to five times more local names for snakes than for lizards and frogs, despite the local species richness of snakes being comparable to the diversity of lizards and frogs. We further find that local knowledge was on par with the academic literature regarding snakebite symptoms. Conclusions: Our results suggest that fear can increase the level of specificity in naming species among indigenous communities, which could lead to biases in the mapping and protection of species that include data from citizen reports. Vertebrate predation by scorpions has been scarcely documented in the literature. Contrary to large scorpions of the genera Centruroides, Hadrurus, Opistophthalmus, and Pandinurus from North America and Africa, which are capable of subduing even small rodents and bats, West Indian scorpions of the genera Centruroides, Heteroctenus, and Tityus seem to limit their prey to amphibians and reptiles. Herein we present new cases of a frog (Osteopilus septentrionalis; Hylidae) and three lizards (Anolis allisoni, A. ophiolepis, and A. sagrei; Dactyloidae) preyed upon by Heteroctenus junceus (Herbst, 1800), at the time we summarize all cases of vertebrate predation by scorpions in the region. Urbanisation is rapidly transforming natural landscapes with consequences for biodiversity. Little is documented on the response of African wildlife to urbanisation. We reviewed case studies of vertebrate species' responses to urbanisation in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa to determine trends. Connected habitat mosaics of natural and anthropogenic green spaces are critical for urban wildlife persistence. We present a novel modification to the final of three phases of the framework described by Evans et al. (2010), which documents this sequence for vertebrate species persistence, based on the perspective of our research. Species in suburbia exhibit an initial phase where behavioural and ecological flexibility, life-history traits and phenotypic plasticity either contribute to their success, or they stay at low numbers. Where successful, the next phase is a rapid increase in populations and distribution; anthropogenic food resources and alternate breeding sites are effectively exploited. On isolated islands, large arthropods can play an important functional role in ecosystem dynamics. On the Norfolk Islands group, South Pacific, we monitored the diet and foraging activity of an endemic chilopod, the Phillip Island centipede (Cormocephalus coynei), and used a stable isotope mixing model to estimate dietary proportions. Phillip Island centipede diet is represented by vertebrate animals (48%) and invertebrates (52%), with 30.5% consisting of squamates, including the Lord Howe Island skink (Oligosoma lichenigera) and Günther's island gecko (Christinus guentheri); 7.9% consisting of black-winged petrel (Pterodroma nigripennis) nestlings; and 9.6% consisting of marine fishes scavenged from regurgitated seabird meals. Centipede predation was the principal source of petrel nestling mortality, with annual rates of predation varying between 11.1% and 19.6% of nestlings. This means that 2,109–3,724 black-winged petrel nestlings may be predated by centipedes annually. Petrels produce a single offspring per year; therefore, predation of nestlings by centipedes represents total breeding failure for a pair in a given year. Our work demonstrates that arthropods can play a leading role in influencing vertebrate reproductive output and modifying trophic structures and nutrient flow in island ecosystems. Biodiversity knowledge is widely heterogeneous across the Earth's biomes. Some areas, due to their remoteness and difficult access, present large taxonomic knowledge gaps. Mostly located in the tropics, these areas have frequently experienced a fast development of anthropogenic activities during the last decades and are therefore of high conservation concerns. The biodiversity hotspots of Southeast Asia exemplify the stakes faced by tropical countries. While the hotspots of Sundaland (Java, Sumatra, Borneo) and Wallacea (Sulawesi, Moluccas) have long attracted the attention of biologists and conservationists alike, extensive parts of the Sahul area, in particular the island of New Guinea, have been much less explored biologically. Here, we describe the results of a DNA‐based inventory of aquatic and terrestrial vertebrate communities, which was the objective of a multidisciplinary expedition to the Bird's Head Peninsula (West Papua, Indonesia) conducted between 17 October and 20 November 2014. This expedition resulted in the assembly of 1005 vertebrate DNA barcodes. Based on the use of multiple species‐delimitation methods (GMYC, PTP, RESL, ABGD), 264 molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) were delineated, among which 75 were unidentified and an additional 48 were considered cryptic. This study suggests that the diversity of vertebrates of the Bird's Head is severely underestimated and considerations on the evolutionary origin and taxonomic knowledge of these biotas are discussed. Background: The genus Abbreviata (Spirurida: Physalopteridea) currently contains 47 species. Physalopteridae nematodes infect a large number of vertebrates, including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. The current study is a report of the first morphological and molecular identification of A. kazakhstanica (Spirurida: Physalopteridea) in Pseudopus apodus in Iran. Methods: Eleven road-killed P. apodus, were collected from, Iran during 2016- 2018. The nematodes were isolated from stomach. After morphological study, the genomic DNA of the parasites was extracted using CTAB method. The DNA was used for PCR amplification of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1). The PCR products were sequenced, the sequence data were analyzed and multiple alignments were conducted using the Clustal Omega. Results: After detailed microscopic examination, the A. kazakhstanica was identified. The cox1 sequences confirmed the species of helminth. The new sequences of A. kazakhstanica were submitted to GenBank under the accession number MK578751-2. Conclusion: Regarding the limited data on parasitological status of Iranian reptiles, more specific and comprehensive investigations are needed to identify the parasitic fauna. During the Triassic, many groups of predatory marine reptiles appeared and diversified. On Mallorca, fossils of marine reptiles have been found in Muschelkalk (Anisian–Ladinian) and Keuper (Carnian–Norian) facies. Here we describe an anterior caudal vertebra of a basal ichthyosauriform similar to Grippidia (Reptilia: Ichthyosauriformes) from the Ladinian carbonate ramps of the Muschelkalk of Mallorca, which fills a biogeographic gap for the group, hitherto only known from the eastern and western margins of Panthalassa. The most plausible hypothesis to explain the fact that the Mallorcan specimen is younger than all the other related species described so far is supported by a rather isolated condition of the carbonate ramps surrounding eastern Iberia during the Anisian, which might point to a relict character of the Mallorcan species, representing the youngest record of basal ichthyosauriforms to date. Moreover, an epiphysis of an indeterminate reptile and four vertebrae assigned to Nothosaurus sp. (Reptilia: Eosauropterygia) from the Keuper sabkhat provide a new record of the latter genus on Mallorca, which falls within its known distribution area. Therefore, the present work provides an exhaustive review of all the marine vertebrate fossils found so far in the Middle–Upper Triassic of Mallorca, some of them with remarkable palaeobiogeographical implications. This paper attempts a synthesis of the evolution of large pelagic filter-feeding animals from the Cambrian to the present. Lineages known or suspected to have evolved large pelagic filter-feeding species are, in the order of their appearance, stem euarthropods, agnathan fishes, nautiloid cephalopods, placoderms, sharks, bony fishes, reptiles, ammonite cephalopods, and mammals. I discuss evolutionary trends which are apparent from the evolution of the large pelagic filter-feeding niche, which are 1. a size increase relative to their ancestral species, 2. the transition between taxonomic groups giving rise to pelagic filter-feeders, with vertebrates dominating the post-Cambrian, 3. the evolution of large pelagic filter-feeders from large carnivores in most, but not all cases, and 4. lengthy gaps in the record of pelagic filter-feeders around four of the big five mass extinctions. Tree cavities play a key role in the structure and functioning of forest ecosystems. Though they host rich and specialized assemblages of numerous vertebrate and invertebrate species, they have received limited research attention in India as well as in tropics. We collated information on cavity using vertebrates of India from the available literature and various databases. Overall, 254 relevant references were found with information about tree and/or cavity characteristics and use for 517 species, which is about 18.4% of terrestrial vertebrate species of India. Among the 517 species, 43.9% were birds, followed by reptiles (30.8%), mammals (17.6%) and amphibians (7.7%), and the majority of them are rare, elusive and nocturnal species restricted to different regions/habitats. About 80% of the species are secondary users. Majority of the species use tree cavities as breeding sites (32.7%), and another 7.4% use them as roost, den or hibernation sites. Our analysis also shows that vertebrates use cavities with various characteristics in a wide variety of tree species. We have identified important gaps in research on cavity using vertebrates and cavity-trees. We have also emphasized the need for highly focused long-term studies on habitat interactions to elucidate species level requirements to plan habitat management strategies for the conservation of cavity using vertebrates and their cavity-trees. The latest Messinian Monticino Quarry fissure fillings, near Brisighella in Italy, are well known for their diverse mammal fauna. Conversely, little is known about other vertebrates from this rich site. beside presenting an overview of the mammals, here we describe fish, amphibian, reptile, and bird remains, identifying three, eight, at least 18, and five taxa, respectively. Some of these represent the oldest occurrences either worldwide (an erycine snake related to Eryx jaculus, Malpolon, and otidids birds) or locally (common toads in the Apennine Peninsula and eremiadine lacertids in Europe, the latter being also the only known occurrence of these lizards in Italy). Altogether, the vertebrate fauna from Monticino Quarry is indicative of a complex palaeoenvironment, which was warm and somehow dry. water bodies were indeed present though, as well as a patchy set of habitats with loose or sandy soils, rocky outcrops, open biotopes, and (even though maybe to a lesser extent) wooded areas. Furthermore, estuarine or lagoonal conditions were likely present near the depositional site. From a palaeobiogeographical point of view, the non-mammal vertebrate assemblage from Monticino Quarry shows considerable Afro-Asian affinities at least for some components. In the context of the Italian late Miocene continental vertebrate assemblages, that of Monticino is remarkably similar to those from the Piedmont basin, especially if compared with the Tusco-Sardinian area, Apulian Platform, Calabrian Arc and Sicily. This is consistent with the palaeobiogeographic scenario defined by mammal assemblages, with northcentral Italy, Tuscany and Sardinia, Apulian Platform, and Calabria and Sicily representing separated bioprovinces.
