Attentional selection of a second target in a rapid stream of stimuli embedding two targets tends to be briefly impaired when two targets are presented in close temporal proximity, an effect known as an attentional blink (AB). Two target sounds (T1 and T2) were embedded in a rapid serial auditory presentation of environmental sounds with a short (Lag 3) or long lag (Lag 9). Participants were to first identify T1 (bell or sine tone) and then to detect T2 (present or absent). Individual stimuli had durations of either 30 or 90 ms, and were presented in streams of 20 sounds. The T2 varied in category: human voice, cello, or dog sound. Previous research has introduced pupillometry as a useful marker of the intensity of cognitive processing and attentional allocation in the visual AB paradigm. Results suggest that the interplay of stimulus factors is critical for target detection accuracy and provides support for the hypothesis that the human voice is the least likely to show an auditory AB (in the 90 ms condition). For the other stimuli, accuracy for T2 was significantly worse at Lag 3 than at Lag 9 in the 90 ms condition, suggesting the presence of an auditory AB. When AB occurred (at Lag 3), we observed smaller pupil dilations, time-locked to the onset of T2, compared to Lag 9, reflecting lower attentional processing when 'blinking' during target detection. Taken together, these findings support the conclusion that human voices escape the AB and that the pupillary changes are consistent with the so-called T2 attentional deficit. The human voice conveys plenty of information about the speaker. A prevalent assumption is that stress-related changes in the human body affect speech production, thus affecting voice features. This suggests that voice data may be an easy-to-capture measure of everyday stress levels and can thus serve as a warning signal of stress-related health consequences. However, previous research is limited (i.e., has induced stress only through artificial tasks or has investigated only short-term or extreme stressors), leaving it open whether everyday work stressors are associated with voice features. Thus, our participants (111 adult working individuals) took part in a 1-week diary study (Sunday until Sunday), in which they provided voice messages and self-report data on daily work stressors. Results showed that work stressors were associated with voice features such as increased speech rate and voice intensity. We discuss theoretical, practical, and ethical implications regarding the voice as an indicator of psychological states.

The authors posit that in an initial exposure to a broadcast video, hearing different voices narrate (in succession) a persuasive message encourages consumers' attention and processing of the message, thereby facilitating persuasion; this is referred to as the voice numerosity effect. Across four studies (plus validation and replication studies)—including two large-scale, real-world data sets (with more than 11,000 crowdfunding videos and over 3.6 million customer transactions, and more than 1,600 video ads) and two controlled experiments (with over 1,800 participants)—the results provide support for the hypothesized effect. The effect (1) has consequential, economic implications in a real-world marketplace, (2) is more pronounced when the message is easier to comprehend, (3) is more pronounced when consumers have the capacity to process the ad message, and (4) is mediated by the favorability of consumers' cognitive responses. The human voice is an often underestimated tool in clinical practice and psychosocial studies and research. Paradoxically, despite being a primary means of expressing emotions and sharing intimate feelings, the human voice is often neglected in clinical psychotherapeutic work. Despite its importance for psychotherapists, psychiatrists, and caregivers, a lack of theories and deeper explorations of its potential impedes its explicit utilization in the mental health care environment. This article focuses on the importance of the caregiver's voice when working with patients from different cultures and languages, particularly in transcultural clinics, such as transcultural consultations, which emphasize the therapeutic characteristics of the voice that clinicians often overlook. The authors examined the clinical intuition of experienced caregivers, including nurses, psychologists, and psychiatrists, who work with patients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The prosody and musical elements of the spoken voice play a particularly important role in these clinical settings that transcend language barriers. Through a qualitative inductive study involving six experienced clinicians, the authors developed themes highlighting the importance of the caregiver's voice. These themes were based on the experiences and clinical anecdotes of participants specializing in transcultural therapeutic approaches, accustomed to collaborating with interpreters who bridge the language divergence between French and the patients' native languages. The transcultural consultation constitutes a unique therapeutic approach comprising a team of co-therapists with diverse cultural backgrounds and languages, along with patients, their family members, and professionals providing administrative, medical, or psychological help. The principal therapist is responsible for setting the stage for the consultation and may invite co-therapists to share mental images or proposals while listening to the patient. In this group setting, attentiveness to the voice is crucial, as it provides the therapist with direct audible cues from the patient, and it is also what the patient receives from the caregivers. Before language is translated by an interpreter, the patient perceives the sound of the therapist's voice, its musicality, prosody, and conveyed emotions. The results of this qualitative study suggest that the therapist's voice in a transcultural clinical setting is essential in creating a positive work environment, conveying good intentions to patients, and establishing a therapeutic alliance through prosodic elements. Furthermore, the voice plays an important implicit and explicit role for the participants in this study. They note that their voice unconsciously varies, and they can use it explicitly as a therapeutic tool to create an impulse or mood. Important aspects of the patient-caregiver relationship can be exclusively transmitted by the tone of the voice and by the musicality of the linguistic content of statements made by the caregiver, who wields an important clinical tool that is often taken for granted. The study also highlighted the important contrast between the explicit role of the caregiver's voice as a conscious therapeutic tool and the implicit, unconscious influence on the caregiver's voice linked to the relationship with patients. Further interdisciplinary studies of the human voice as a tool in a clinical and psychotherapeutic context are therefore essential, and the transcultural approach could inspire future research. Background: Communication is a key tool in the nursing profession. It is known that listeners are sensitive to the speaker's voice and interpret the speaker's intentions primarily from the non‐verbal signal conveyed. Aim: To map and discuss the current state of knowledge and research evidence on professional voice use in health and nursing care. Design and Method: A scoping review adherent to the EQUATOR guidelines PRISMA‐ScR. Data Sources: Searches in the EBSCO, CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, PsychInfo and PsycArticles databases were conducted between 1 and 28 February 2023. Results: According to the data (n = 23), health professionals use voice as a vital aspect of caring communication and caring relationships, and in leadership as well as inter‐professional collaboration, to facilitate information exchange and understanding and promote shared decision‐making. The data showed that there is also a rising tendency to explore vocal demands and problems among health professionals. No studies were found on the use of voice in digital health and nursing care services or by social robots. Most of the reviewed studies were cross‐sectional, rather small, and focused primarily on the perspectives of healthcare professionals. Conclusion: The use of voice should be explored as a vital aspect of caring communication and caring relationships from the patients' perspective, and the effects of voice use on listeners' emotions and actions should be examined in different contexts with modern, voice‐specific data collection methods. Studies focusing on voice use in digital health care and by social robots are also needed. By integrating training programmes, education and technological innovations, health care can leverage the full potential of voice‐based communication to promote a more coordinated and patient‐centred care environment, true inter‐professional collaboration and effective leadership. This methodological paper connects posthuman conceptualizations of voice with artistic research and examines whether it opens toward different registers and levels of embodied and aesthetic forms of knowing that cut across normative accounts of what it means to know. We start from what Patti Lather calls 'a praxis of stuck places' and ask how to give voice to experiences such as chronic illness and pain, while at the same time disrupting representational forms of illness and pain. To investigate this, we first critically engage with the popular genre of the health diary and its representational form. Secondly, we explore how Lisa A. Mazzei concept of 'voice without subject' can support us in disrupting the normative and representational production of voice, while working with a failing voice. Finally, we analyze the sound installation, A Borrowed Diary —made by M. Broeckmeyer, and explore how it opens up alternative approaches to voice and chronic pain. We will argue that making 'voice without subject' work, touch, and resonate can impact the lives of people who often remain unheard, in that it acknowledges experiences and expressions that are mostly not validated. Creating with 'voice without subject' makes tangible how personal experiences, however, temporarily, contribute to the bigger picture of how we look at and listen to people with illnesses and/or disabilities. Purpose: This study explored how respiration, voice, and speech were affected following expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) and maintenance training in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) or multiple sclerosis (MS). Method: Nine participants with PD and six with MS participated in a randomised study, where the effects of EMST, sham, and maintenance treatment were investigated. Outcome measures included maximum expiratory pressure (MEP); maximum phonation time (MPT); intelligibility; verbal diadochokinesis (DDK); speech rate; a self-report form on voice, speech, and communication; and open questions about how the participants experienced the intervention. Group comparisons were performed within and between groups. Result: The PD and the MS groups both improved significantly in MEP, and this improvement remained after 3 months of maintenance EMST. An improvement was also seen in DDK. Post-EMST, 33% of the PD group and 80% of the MS group reported a positive effect on communication. Conclusion: The results of this study support previous evidence that EMST has positive effects on expiratory pressure in persons with PD or MS, but its effect on voice and speech remains unclear. Since subjective reports of the intervention and effects on communication were predominantly positive, further research is needed on larger groups to explore appropriate outcome measures. Introduction: Smart devices are widely available and capable of quickly recording and uploading speech segments for health-related analysis. The switch from laboratory recordings with professional-grade microphone setups to remote, smart device-based recordings offers immense potential for the scalability of voice assessment. Yet, a growing body of literature points to a wide heterogeneity among acoustic metrics for their robustness to variation in recording devices. The addition of consumer-grade plug-and-play microphones has been proposed as a possible solution. The aim of our study was to assess if the addition of consumer-grade plug-and-play microphones increases the acoustic measurement agreement between ultra-portable devices and a reference microphone. Methods: Speech was simultaneously recorded by a reference high-quality microphone commonly used in research and by two configurations with plug-and-play microphones. Twelve speech-acoustic features were calculated using recordings from each microphone to determine the agreement intervals in measurements between microphones. Agreement intervals were then compared to expected deviations in speech in various neurological conditions. Each microphone's response to speech and to silence was characterized through acoustic analysis to explore possible reasons for differences in acoustic measurements between microphones. The statistical differentiation of two groups, neurotypical and people with multiple sclerosis, using metrics from each tested microphone was compared to that of the reference microphone. Results: The two consumer-grade plug-and-play microphones favored high frequencies (mean center of gravity difference ≥ +175.3 Hz) and recorded more noise (mean difference in signal to noise ≤ −4.2 dB) when compared to the reference microphone. Between consumer-grade microphones, differences in relative noise were closely related to distance between the microphone and the speaker's mouth. Agreement intervals between the reference and consumer-grade microphones remained under disease-expected deviations only for fundamental frequency (f0, agreement interval ≤0.06 Hz), f0 instability (f0 CoV, agreement interval ≤0.05%), and tracking of second formant movement (agreement interval ≤1.4 Hz/ms). Agreement between microphones was poor for other metrics, particularly for fine timing metrics (mean pause length and pause length variability for various tasks). The statistical difference between the two groups of speakers was smaller with the plug-and-play than with the reference microphone. Conclusion: Measurement of f0 and F2 slope was robust to variation in recording equipment, while other acoustic metrics were not. Thus, the tested plug-and-play microphones should not be used interchangeably with professional-grade microphones for speech analysis. Plug-and-play microphones may assist in equipment standardization within speech studies, including remote or self-recording, possibly with small loss in accuracy and statistical power as observed in the current study. Introduction: Vocal performers often seek natural treatments to improve their vocal capability. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation may reduce inflammation and cause changes in body composition, such as loss of fat mass. The purpose of this study was to determine if omega-3 PUFA supplementation in combination with a singer's training regimen enhances singing training and body composition. Methods: This was a non-randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Forty-three college-level students were recruited and volunteered to serve as study participants. 3.0 g of omega-3 PUFA per day or 3.0 g of placebo per day were provided over a 10-week intervention. Participants completed Singing Voice Handicap Index (SVHI), Reflux Symptom Index (RSI), Evaluation of Ability to Sing Easily (EASE), Voice Range Profile (VRP), food records, and body composition measures at baseline and study end. Results: Thirty-five participants completed the study. SVHI was significantly different between groups (p = 0.0152; ƞ2 = 0.153). A minor third was added to the bottom of the range in 50% of males in the supplement group (placebo = 0%). Body composition measures were not statistically significant, although those in the supplement group lost more fat mass than placebo, p = 0.101. Discussion/Conclusion: Omega-3 PUFA supplementation may be beneficial to improve how active singers feel about their voice and could potentially improve voice range in conjunction with voice lessons; however, more research is necessary to confirm the latter. Group singing is beneficial for health and well-being but many new clients presenting in the singing teaching studio come from choir backgrounds and with established voice problems. Amateur group singers do not usually receive individual feedback on their singing efforts, so there is a need to establish a self-monitoring procedure. This qualitative inquiry involved purposive sampling of 18 amateur choir singers trialing a self-assessment (SA) protocol for three weeks. A pre-trial and post-trial online questionnaire was completed to assess the impact of the SA protocol on singing behaviors. Three follow up online interviews were conducted to further interrogate the processes experienced by participants. Post-trial results revealed an increased awareness of healthy and unhealthy singing habits evidenced by changes in thinking and mental attitude, and in behavior and practice improvement. Visual and aural self-assessment were easiest for participants to employ with kinesthetic self-assessment being the most difficult. Choir leaders need to continue to educate the singers in their care concerning vocal health and efficiency and encourage self-assessment during singing and speaking acts. Individual singers in an amateur setting must be encouraged to become independent learners, taking responsibility for their vocal health through self-monitoring procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, there is no consensus on the characterization of the human voice. The objective of the present study is to describe the myoelectric behavior of the extrinsic musculature of the larynx in 146 people with normal voice (Spanish speakers), aged between 20 and 50 years old. Different vocal tasks were recorded using a surface electromyograph (SEMG). In all vocal tasks, it was observed that women had higher activation (µV) in the suprahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles than men, while men had higher activation in the infrahyoid muscles. SEMG is a valid procedure to help define normal vocal characteristics in the studied population, providing reference values during clinical examination. The May 2023 elections in Turkey are puzzling because public support for President Erdoğan did not erode despite political-economic failures of considerable magnitude. The economy was ailing, the government's performance in containing natural disasters was dismal, and oscillations in foreign policy were perplexing. Yet, Erdoğan managed to win elections once again, giving him the mandate to continue ruling the country over the next five years. What explains this political outcome in the face of 'multiple governance crises'? We adopt Albert O. Hirschman's 'exit, voice, and loyalty' framework to explain the multiple but interrelated sources of the resilience of authoritarian populism in Turkey. We suggest the 'exit, voice, and loyalty' equilibrium in the 2023 Turkish elections requires an integrated analysis along two dimensions, each interacting with and mutually reinforcing the other: the economy-identity nexus and the domestic-external nexus. Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease and affects millions of people. Accurate diagnosis and subsequent treatment in the early stages can slow down disease progression. However, making an accurate diagnosis of PD at an early stage is challenging. Previous studies have revealed that even for movement disorder specialists, it was difficult to differentiate patients with PD from healthy individuals until the average modified Hoehn-Yahr staging (mH&Y) reached 1.8. Recent researches have shown that dysarthria provides good indicators for computer-assisted diagnosis of patients with PD. However, few studies have focused on diagnosing patients with PD in the early stages, specifically those with mH&Y ≥ 1.5. Method: We used a machine learning algorithm to analyze voice features and developed diagnostic models for differentiating between healthy controls (HCs) and patients with PD, and for differentiating between HCs and patients with mild PD (mH&Y ≥ 1.5). The models were independently validated using separate datasets. Results: Our results demonstrate that, a remarkable diagnostic performance of the model in identifying patients with mild PD (mH&Y ≥ 1.5) and HCs, with area under the ROC curve 0.93 (95% CI: 0.851.00), accuracy 0.85, sensitivity 0.95, and specificity 0.75. Conclusion: The results of our study are helpful for screening PD in the early stages in the community and primary medical institutions where there is a lack of movement disorder specialists and special equipment. Objective: This study was conducted to present the long-term functional outcomes of injection laryngoplasty (IL) with hyaluronic acid/dextranomer (HA/D) in unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). Methods: A total of 40 patients who underwent HA/D injection for UVFP were enrolled. The acoustic analysis of the voice was evaluated with jitter percentage, shimmer percentage, maximum phonation time, harmonics-to-noise ratio, and fundamental frequency. The psychosocial effect of the voice was determined using the Voice Handicap Index-10. Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing was performed and 2 scales were used for quantification: a modified penetration-aspiration scale and a dysphagia score. All measurements were performed at preoperative day and postoperative months 1, 6, and 24. Results: A statistically significant improvement was observed for all of the evaluated parameters except the maximum phonation time for postoperative months 1, 6, and 24 (P <.05). In the evaluation of the maximum phonation time, although there was a significant improvement for the postoperative months 1 and 6, no significant difference was observed between the postoperative 24th month and the preoperative value. Conclusions: HA/D injection laryngoplasty is an effective method both in the short- and long-term to improve voice and swallowing functions in patients with UVFP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, gender-ambiguous (nonbinary) voices have been added to voice assistants to combat gender stereotypes and foster inclusion. However, if people react negatively to such voices, these laudable efforts may be counterproductive. In five preregistered studies (N = 3,684 adult participants) we found that people do react negatively, rating products described by narrators with gender-ambiguous voices less favorably than when they are described by clearly male or female narrators. The voices create a feeling of unease, or social disfluency, that affects evaluations of the products being described. These effects are best explained by low familiarity with voices that sound ambiguous. Thus, initial negative reactions can be overcome with more exposure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a growing health concern that affects several systems in the body, among which is the phonatory apparatus. Voice may be affected in view of the high prevalence of myopathy and neuropathy in diseased subjects. The authors aimed to answer the following question: does type 2 diabetes have an effect on voice? Methods: The systematic review included search terms such as "speech, voice, larynx, glucose, diabetes, and hyperglycemia." The search strategy yielded 221 articles, only five of which satisfied the inclusion criteria. Articles were considered for inclusion using the PRISMA method. Analysis included 321 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 171 controls. All studies included were case-control studies except for one study which was an observational cohort. Six parameters were chosen as endpoints for the systematic review and meta-analysis: the presence/absence of voice complaints, fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, noise-to-harmonic ratio, and maximum phonation time. Results: There was no significant difference in the prevalence of voice complaints (i.e., hoarseness) between diabetic patients and control groups. There was also no significant difference in any of the acoustic and aerodynamic measures between patients with type 2 diabetes and controls. These findings can be ascribed to the high resilience of the laryngeal muscles to the adverse effect of systemic diseases. Conclusion: There is no consensus in the literature that the prevalence of voice symptoms in diabetic patients is significantly higher than that reported in healthy subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes findings of a transdisciplinary scoping literature review process that acknowledges assistive technology-users' contributions to disability arts by clarifying the key concepts of 'voice', 'communication technology', 'disability', and 'art'. Driven by the early stages of a participatory research project involving young disabled artists, the literature search was carried out between April 2019 and August 2019. The studies selected for this review (n = 14) were analyzed through a thematic narrative approach, which revealed seven overlapping themes that reflect the inseparability and transdisciplinarity of the key concepts. Later consultation with young disabled artists based on this literature review prompted changes in our research process. We conclude that nuanced research related to voice, communication technology, disability, and art is better situated in the radical expression of artists themselves, rather than in formalized research labs and codified studies such as that which housed this inquiry. Persons who use assistive technology contribute to disability arts and arts-related research but are underrepresented in literature about these topics This article synthesizes the findings of 14 research articles on the overlapping concepts of 'voice', 'communication technology', 'disability', and 'art' This article considers the six main steps of a scoping literature review, and argues that the final step of community consultation is most significant This synthesis of academic literature shows that people who communicate in many ways make significant contributions to disability arts, and the greatest predictors of knowledge in this area are found in the expressions of artists themselves—even more so than might be documented in academic literature. Does endorsement of employees' constructive voice always result in more voice behavior in the future? Although it is often assumed that endorsement is a critical predictor of future voice behavior, we argue that this effect is contingent on whether managers claim credit for their employees' voice. Drawing from the group engagement model, we first predict that endorsement will be positively associated with voicing employees' perceived respect within the group, while managers' credit-claiming behaviors will be negatively associated with such respect. We then further predict that credit-claiming behaviors serve as a boundary condition to the positive association between endorsement and respect, such that when levels of credit claiming by managers are higher, the positive association between endorsement and respect will be weakened. Higher levels of respect, in turn, are associated with higher levels of work group identification and then higher levels of future voice behavior. Results from a multi-wave survey field study in China and a scenario experiment in the United States offer support for our model. Our findings suggest an important but neglected form of managerial response to voice – credit claiming – and highlight its detrimental effect on motivating future voice behavior despite voice endorsement. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, mask-wearing has become a widespread phenomenon. Even after the pandemic, people continue to maintain the habit of wearing masks in their daily lives. While existing research has explored how mask-wearing can influence wearers' behavior in everyday life, its effects in the workplace have received less attention. Drawing on self-perception theory, this study examined the positive effect of mask-wearing in the workplace on wearers' voice behavior via psychological safety. An online experiment (N = 291) using a within-subject manipulation of wearing masks supported our hypotheses. Autistic youth display difficulties in emotion recognition, yet little research has examined behavioral and neural indices of vocal emotion recognition (VER). The current study examines behavioral and event-related potential (N100, P200, Late Positive Potential [LPP]) indices of VER in autistic and non-autistic youth. Participants (N = 164) completed an emotion recognition task, the Diagnostic Analyses of Nonverbal Accuracy (DANVA-2) which included VER, during EEG recording. The LPP amplitude was larger in response to high intensity VER, and social cognition predicted VER errors. Verbal IQ, not autism, was related to VER errors. An interaction between VER intensity and social communication impairments revealed these impairments were related to larger LPP amplitudes during low intensity VER. Taken together, differences in VER may be due to higher order cognitive processes, not basic, early perception (N100, P200), and verbal cognitive abilities may underlie behavioral, yet occlude neural, differences in VER processing. Current methods of eliciting running speech for subjective rating, or perceptual analysis, in the assessment of pediatric voice disorders are not standardized. Whilst different assessment tools have different requirements, a commonality is the requirement to judge the perceptual characteristics of the individual's everyday speaking voice. However, it is unclear whether current practices yield ecologically valid running speech samples. The aim of this study was to analyse the length and characteristics of conversational responses, to stimuli that were designed to elicit running speech samples from pediatric clients. Twenty conversations, conducted as part of the evaluation of voice in a pediatric population, were analysed. Length of responses, number of responses and question types were recorded. The median maximum utterance length was 15.9 s; seven participants presented with a maximum of less than 10 s. Response length was significantly associated with question type, F = 10.68, p<.001. The most frequent number of responses produced was 11 (range = 17, IQR = 5, 11). There was a moderate correlation between response length and number of responses, r(18)=.53, p=.02. These data demonstrated that informal conversational methods did not consistently yield running speech samples of greater than 10 s in length, the minimum sample length recommended by the CAPE-V protocol. There was considerable variability in the characteristics of the responses produced by participants. Using a task such as a narrative re-tell might allow for better standardization of responses, including elicitation of vocal behaviors of interest, as well as yield a longer sample. In this paper, we investigated the coupling among the alterations of brain activity and the rhythmic pattern of voice. We benefited from complexity and information concepts and ran the analysis on EEG and voice (audio) signals using sample entropy and Shannon entropy. To change brain activity, we applied four different odors with different complexities on ten subjects (5 M, 5 F). Accordingly, subjects' voice was changed, and therefore, we evaluated the changes in EEG versus voice signals by calculating their Shannon entropy and sample entropy. The obtained results showed that the variations of complexity (r = 0.8659) and the information content (r = 0.9423) of voice and EEG signals are strongly correlated. Abductor laryngeal dystonia (ABLD) is a rare neurological voice disorder which results in sporadic opening of the vocal folds during speech. Etiology is unknown, and to date there is no identified effective behavioral treatment for it. It is hypothesized that LSVT LOUD®, which was developed to treat dysphonia secondary to Parkinson's disease, may have application to speakers with ABLD to improve outcomes beyond that with botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) treatment alone. The participant received one injection of BoNT in each vocal fold 2 to 3 months prior to initiating intensive voice therapy via teletherapy. Objective measures of vocal loudness (dB sound pressure level), maximum phonation time, and high/low pitch frequency (Hz) were recorded in all treatment sessions and follow-up sessions. Over the course of treatment, the participant showed steady gains in phonation time, volume, pitch range, and vocal quality with a substantial reduction in aphonic voice breaks by the end of the treatment program. Perceptual symptoms of ABLD were nearly undetectable by the participant and the clinicians up to 12 months posttreatment, with no additional BoNT injections. The results suggest that LSVT LOUD® following BoNT was effective, with long-lasting improvement in vocal function, for this speaker with ABLD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reflects on how twenty-first century Mapuche writers Daniela Catrileo and Soraya Maicoño upend notions of "silence" as corresponding to emptiness or absence through their experiments with poetic form. I begin by examining patterns and forms of silence and silencing in Mapuche poetry, mainly in dialogue with the poet Liliana Ancalao, as well as Mapudungun's polyphonous conception of a "language" or "poetics" of the land that destabilizes colonial modes of listening, voicing, and sense-making. I then analyze the poetics of the line break, as well as the notion of poetic "white space," as contesting narratives that attempt to silence and make invisible Mapuche communities through settler colonial frameworks. I finally evaluate the relationship between form, the caesura or the line break, and silencing or absence in two recent works: Pewma Ull: El sueño del sonido by Soraya Maicoño and Dani Zelko, and Río herido by Daniela Catrileo. Through a notion I term "underwriting," I posit that these poets politicize form and blankness in order to not only make resonant Mapuche voices that have been previously construed as silent and absent by the settler state, but to propose alternative and active conceptualizations of "silence" as poetic modes of theorizing notions of mourning, restitution, and justice under settler colonialism. The vocal fold vibrates in high frequency to create voice sound. The vocal fold has a sophisticated histological "layered structure" that enables such vibration. As the vibration causes fricative damage to the mucosa, excessive voicing can cause inflammation or injury to the mucosa. Chronic inflammation or repeated injury to the vocal fold occasionally induces scar formation in the mucosa, which can result in severe dysphonia, which is difficult to treat. Oxidative stress has been proven to be an important factor in aggravating the injury, which can lead to scarring. It is important to avoid excessive oxidative stress during the wound healing period. Excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been found in the injured vocal folds of rats during the early phase of wound healing. Antioxidants proved to be useful in preventing the accumulation of ROS during the period with less scar formation in the long-term results. Oxidative stress is also revealed to contribute to aging of the vocal fold, in which the mucosa becomes thin and stiff with a reduction in vibratory capacity. The aged voice can be characterized as weak and breathy. It has been confirmed that ROS gradually increases in rat vocal fold mucosa with age, which may cause further damage to the vocal fold. Antioxidants have also proved effective in avoiding aging of the vocal fold in rat models. Recently, human trials have shown significant effects of the antioxidant Twendee X for maintaining the voice of professional opera singers. In conclusion, it is suggested that oxidative stress has a great impact on the damage or deterioration of the vocal folds, and the use of antioxidants is effective for preventing damage of the vocal fold and maintaining the voice. Introduction: Bilinguals constitute a significant portion of speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) caseloads. Insight into the cross-linguistic effect on voice is needed to guide SLPs to make linguistically appropriate observations when working with heterogenous populations. Method: Nineteen female English-Northern Sotho bilinguals performed three speech tasks (reading, picture description, and monologue) in each language. Acoustic analysis of mean fundamental frequency (f0), intensity, and articulation rate was conducted with Praat. A panel of blinded listeners reached consensus after independently reviewing the recordings during perceptual analysis of voice quality, resonance, and glottal attack. Results: The following statistically significant differences were found across and within the languages: The mean f0 was 204.61 Hz in the Northern Sotho picture description yet 196.50 Hz in the English picture description. The mean intensity of reading in Northern Sotho was 66.38 dB whereas the mean intensity of reading in English was 65.09 dB. Articulation rate was 3.78 syllables/s in English passage reading and 3.41 syllables/s in Northern Sotho passage reading. Within English, passage reading elicited a significantly quicker articulation rate than the picture description (3.34 syllables/s) and monologue (3.46 syllables/s). Within Northern Sotho, mean f0 was 203.83 Hz in passage reading yet 191.11 Hz in the monologue. Perceptual voice quality, glottal attack, and resonance were comparable across languages. Conclusion: Relationships between languages spoken, task performance, and vocal characteristics were observed in English-Northern Sotho bilingual females. Two studies investigated the interaction between gendered pronouns and voice pitch on evaluations in a job interview setting. The first experiment included 68 participants recruited via email at a private Midwestern college. Gendered pronouns (he/she/the candidate) were provided for a job candidate with a gender-neutral voice pitch. There were no statistically significant differences between gendered pronoun conditions in evaluations of job candidates. The second experiment had 180 participants. Both the pitch (high, neutral, low) and gender pronouns (he, she, and the candidate) were manipulated. There were several significant main effects of perceived gender, and interactions were found between perceived gender and pitch of voice. Pitch and gendered pronouns together affected the way job candidates were evaluated. Reducing portfolio carbon footprints (Exit) and voting in favor of climate-related shareholder proposals (Voice) are among the main actions that investors can take to promote an accelerated transition toward a low-carbon economy. This paper studies three important investor groups that can be instrumental in driving the transition and evaluates their Exit and Voice behavior. I find that the five largest asset managers perform poorly on Exit and Voice over the full sample period but improved on both in more recent years. Only a small fraction of signatories to sustainable investor initiatives are supportive of the transition. Counterintuitively, investors who perform poorly on Exit, perform well on Voice. Finally, I examine the financial consequences of employing Exit and Voice and find that Exit is positively related to risk-adjusted fund returns; however, this is not necessarily attributable to superior skill of fund managers. The human voice is commonly affected by hormonal changes, both in physiological and pathological conditions. Voice changes were reported in a number of endocrine disorders, and dysphonia may be the initial sign of these disorders. A number of studies documented endocrine-related voice changes utilizing both subjective and objective voice assessment tools. The objective of the present review is to draw the phoniatrician's attention to the wide variety of typical changes, as well as the potential for hormonal imbalances that may affect the voice, in order to identify them promptly and generate proper treatment and referrals. Objectives: To compare subjective voice outcomes and postoperative laryngoscopic examination findings of patients with subjective voice complaints between surgeon-monitored and certified technician–monitored thyroidectomies. Methods: Patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy, total thyroidectomy, and completion thyroidectomy using a nerve monitoring system between November 2015 and June 2018 were included in the study. Retrospective chart review was carried out to assess how often patients reported voice changes and to record postoperative flexible laryngoscopic findings of patients when that examination was performed. Data were analyzed using the χ2 test to identify significant differences in outcomes for the 2 groups. Results: A total of 293 procedures was performed among 3 surgeons. Surgeons monitored the nerves in 147 cases and a certified technician monitored the nerves in 146 cases. Subjective voice changes were identified in 11 (7.48%) cases in the surgeon-monitored group and in 20 (13.70%) cases in the technician-monitored group (P =.084). Among the patients who expressed subjective voice changes, 7 patients were identified with vocal cord hypomobility or immobility in the surgeon-monitored group and 13 patients had an abnormal examination in the technician-monitored group (P =.234). Conclusions: Subjective voice changes or proven vocal cord mobility problems were not different between surgeon-monitored patients and technician-monitored patients in thyroidectomies. Objective: Patients with eating disorders report the experience of living with an eating disorder voice, a second‐ or third‐person, negative commentary about eating, weight, shape and their implications for self‐esteem. Qualitative and cross‐sectional studies suggest that the severity and characteristics of the eating disorder voice might play a role in the maintenance of eating disorder symptoms. The goal of this study was to expand the evidence base as to how the eating disorder voice changes over time and whether the characteristics of the voice are associated with changes in eating disorder symptoms during treatment. Method: Seventy‐two patients with anorexia nervosa receiving intensive eating disorder treatment were recruited. They completed self‐report measures of eating disorder symptoms, psychological distress and eating disorder voice's severity and characteristics (e.g., malevolence, benevolence and omnipotence) at baseline and approximately 6 months later. Results: Over time, patients reported lower levels of eating and weight concern (small effect size), shape concern (large effect size) and anxiety (small effect size). They also reported a reduction in the severity, perceived malevolence (medium effect size) and omnipotence (small effect size) of the eating disorder voice. Greater severity and malevolence of the voice, and lower benevolence at baseline predicted greater reductions in eating disorder symptoms (i.e., restraint and shape concern). Conclusion: Beliefs about the eating disorder voice (i.e., malevolence) and severity of the voice appear to be malleable to treatment and are associated with a reduction of eating disorder symptoms. Introduction The voice and hearing can be affected to different degrees by aging, which can cause communication difficulties for elderly people. Vocal production requires effective temporal auditory processing at central levels within the nervous system, which can be compromised by the aging process. Objective To analyze the correlation between voice and temporal auditory processing in older adults. Materials and Methods A total of 40 elderly people aged 60 years or older were subdivided into 2 groups according to the presence or absence of vocal symptoms measured by the Voice Symptom Scale. All of the participants were submitted to auditory temporal tests, vocal self-assessment, and acoustic and perceptual auditory analyses of voice. Results Most of the subjects assessed had decreased voice intensity and normal variability in terms of vocal quality. The performance was normal in the Pitch Pattern Sequence test and altered in the Random Gap Detection test. In the Masking Period Pattern test, the detection thresholds for the target signal were increased in the presence of masking in different temporal target signal positions. Only pitch differed between the two groups. There were differences between the genders regarding frequency, shimmer, the overall severity of the alteration, and roughness. There was a correlation regarding temporal resolution ability and the overall severity of the alteration and roughness of the voice. Conclusion There is a central auditory impairment in temporal resolution which is correlated with vocal alterations in the elderly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Previous research on voice in Parkinson's disease (PD) has consistently demonstrated alterations in acoustic parameters, including fundamental frequency (F0), maximum phonation time, Shimmer, and Jitter. However, investigations into acoustic parameter alterations in individuals with PD are limited. Methods: We conducted an experimental study involving 20 PD patients (six women and fourteen men). Subjective measures of voice (VHI-30 scale and GRBAS) and objective measures using the OnlineLAB App tool for analyzing biomechanical correlates of voice were recorded. The app analyzed a total of 22 biomechanical parameters of voice. Results: The results of subjective measures were consistent with findings from previous studies. However, the results of objective measures did not align with studies that employed acoustic measures. Conclusions: The biomechanical analysis revealed alterations in various parameters according to gender. These findings open up a new avenue of research in voice analysis for patients with PD, whether through acoustic or biomechanical analysis, aiming to determine whether the observed changes in these patients' voices are attributable to age or disease progression. This line of investigation will help elucidate the relative contribution of these factors to vocal alterations in PD patients and provide a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Purpose: Considering the conceptual migration from vocal load and vocal loading to vocal demand and vocal demand response, this review of literature aimed to identify physiological explanations, reported measurements, and associated factors (vocal demands) reported in the literature when considering the phonatory response to a vocal demand. Methods: A systematic review of literature, following the PRISMA Statement, was conducted using Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. Data were analyzed and presented in two parts. First, a bibliometric analysis, co-occurrence analysis, and content analysis were performed. Three criteria that got article inclusion were defined: (1) written in English, Spanish, and Portuguese; (2) published between 2009 and 2021; and (3) focused on vocal load and loading, vocal demand response, and voice assessment parameters. A total of 54 publications met the criteria and were included in this review. The second part included a conceptual framework based on the content analysis of three aspects of vocal demand response: (1) physiological explanations, (2) reported measurements, and (3) vocal demands. Results and Conclusion: As would be expected since vocal demand response is a relatively new term and not yet commonly used in literature when discussing way that the speakers respond to communicative scenarios, most of the studies reviewed (both historical and recent) still use the term of vocal load and vocal loading. Although there is a broad variety of literature discussing a wide range of vocal demands and voice parameters used to characterize the vocal demand response, results show that there is consistency across the studies. While vocal demand response is unique and intrinsic to the talker, associated factors that contribute to this response include both internal talker and external talker factors. Internal factors include muscle stiffness, viscosity in the phonatory system, vocal fold tissue damage, elevated sound pressure levels during occupational voice demands, extended periods of voice use, suboptimal body posture, difficulties in breathing technique, and sleep disturbances. Associated external factors include the working environment (noise, acoustics, temperature, humidity). In conclusion, although vocal demand response is intrinsic to the speaker, the speaker's response is affected by external vocal demands. However, due to the wide methods to evaluate vocal demand response, it has been difficult to establish its contribution to voice disorders in the general population and, specifically, among occupational voice users. Background: Research has shown that potential perpetrators and individuals high in psychopathic traits tend to body language cues to target a potential new victim. However, whether targeting occurs also by tending to vocal cues has not been examined. Thus, the role of voice in interpersonal violence merits investigation. Objective: In two studies, we examined whether perpetrators could differentiate female speakers with and without sexual and physical assault histories (presented as rating the degree of ‘vulnerability’ to victimization). Methods: Two samples of male listeners (sample one N = 105, sample two, N = 109) participated. Each sample rated 18 voices (9 survivors and 9 controls). Listener sample one heard spontaneous speech, and listener sample two heard the second sentence of a standardized passage. Listeners’ self-reported psychopathic traits and history of previous perpetration were measured. Results: Across both samples, history of perpetration (but not psychopathy) predicted accuracy in distinguishing survivors of assault. Conclusions: These findings highlight the potential role of voice in prevention and intervention. Gaining a further understanding of what voice cues are associated with accuracy in discerning survivors can also help us understand whether or not specialized voice training could have a role in self-defense practices. This paper considers the possibilities of analysing children's own designs to contribute to the design of inclusive paediatric mobility interventions. The aim of this paper is threefold: (1) to develop a framework for child-centred design analysis, (2) to analyse children's designs to explore both quantitative and qualitative insights and (3) to explore how children's voice could be elevated through design research. A Child-centred Design Analysis Framework is developed in an interdisciplinary manner, comprising four dimensions including Child, Content, Context and Format. It is used as a vehicle to analyse and code 130 "Dream Wheelchair" designs by children. The children's "Dream Wheelchair" designs reference a range of features and priorities, which are gathered into themes through the framework, providing insights into children's individual and collective mobility narratives, values and requirements. Themes are explored through a qualitative interdisciplinary lens to understand the nature of children's lived experiences. The framework promotes child-centred framing through extracting meaning from children's own designs. It is suggested that child-centred framing and a rights-respecting approach to assistive technology design research can lead to more appropriate design outcomes and improved user experiences for children with disabilities. The design analysis framework developed and presented in this paper facilitates child-centred framing to elevate children's voice in a design process. Analysis of 130 children's visual and textual designs elicited narratives, values, and requirements around their "Dream Wheelchairs"; these findings contribute insights which can be used for designing inclusive paediatric mobility interventions. Objectives: To determine if trans-laryngeal airflow, important in assessing vocal function in paresis/paralysis and presbylarynges patients with mid-cord glottal gaps, could be predicted by other measures sensitive to mid-cord glottal gap size but with smaller risks of spreading COVID-19, and if any patient factors need consideration. Methods: Four populations were: unilateral vocal fold paresis/paralysis (UVFP, 148), aging and UVFP (UVFP plus aging, 22), bilateral vocal fold paresis/paralysis without airway obstruction (BVFP, 49), and presbylarynges (66). Five measures were selected from the initial clinic visit: mean airflow from repeated /pi/ syllables, longer of 2 /s/ and 2 /z/ productions, higher of 2 cepstral peak prominence smoothed for vowel /a/ (CPPSa), and Glottal Function Index (GFI). S/Z ratios were computed. Stepwise regression models used 3 measures and 5 patient factors (age, sex, etiology, diagnosis, and potentially impaired power source for voicing) to predict airflow. Results: Log-transformations were required to normalize distributions of airflow and S/Z ratio. The final model revealed age, sex, impaired power source, log-transformed S/Z ratio, and GFI predicted log-transformed airflow (R 2 =.275, F [5,278] = 21.1; P <.001). Conclusions: The amount of variance explained by the model was not high, suggesting adding other predictive variables to the model might increase the variance explained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: To update the European guidelines for the assessment of voice quality (VQ) in clinical practice. Methods: Nineteen laryngologists–phoniatricians of the European Laryngological Society (ELS) and the Union of the European Phoniatricians (UEP) participated to a modified Delphi process to propose statements about subjective and objective VQ assessments. Two anonymized voting rounds determined a consensus statement to be acceptable when 80% of experts agreed with a rating of at least 3/4. The statements with ≥ 3/4 score by 60–80% of experts were improved and resubmitted to voting until they were validated or rejected. Results: Of the 90 initial statements, 51 were validated after two voting rounds. A multidimensional set of minimal VQ evaluations was proposed and included: baseline VQ anamnesis (e.g., allergy, medical and surgical history, medication, addiction, singing practice, job, and posture), videolaryngostroboscopy (mucosal wave symmetry, amplitude, morphology, and movements), patient-reported VQ assessment (30- or 10-voice handicap index), perception (Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, and Strain), aerodynamics (maximum phonation time), acoustics (Mean F0, Jitter, Shimmer, and noise-to-harmonic ratio), and clinical instruments associated with voice comorbidities (reflux symptom score, reflux sign assessment, eating-assessment tool-10, and dysphagia handicap index). For perception, aerodynamics and acoustics, experts provided guidelines for the methods of measurement. This paper investigates Philomela's metamorphosis into a swallow as inferred from Sophocles' fragmentary Tereus. The first part focusses on the association between the swallow and barbaric language, casting new light on Philomela's characterization in the play. The second investigates the shuttle, the weaving tool which prompts the recognition of Philomela, arguing that the mention of its 'voice' in fr. 595 Radt refers not only to the tapestry which it created, but also to the actual sound of the shuttle, which ancient Greeks associated with the swallow, and thus anticipates Philomela's metamorphosis. Working people differentiate between their relationships with their organizations and their relationships with their supervisors. To better understand how these simultaneous relationships influence each other, we examined the effects of organizational unfairness on subordinates' supervisor-directed destructive voice behaviors, as well as the effects of supervisor unfairness on subordinates' organization-directed destructive voice behaviors. We examined supervisor organizational embodiment as a boundary condition and perceived obstruction as a mediating mechanism within these relationships. We tested the hypothesized model with an online survey study and an experimental vignette study. Study 1 indicated that organizational unfairness was positively and indirectly related to supervisor-directed destructive voice through perceived supervisor obstruction when supervisor organizational embodiment was higher rather than lower. Study 2 indicated that supervisor unfairness was positively and indirectly related to organization-directed destructive voice through perceived organizational obstruction when supervisor organizational embodiment was higher rather than lower. Although study results differed in the observed significance of organization-to-supervisor and supervisor-to-organization effects, together they demonstrate the importance of controlling for source-target aligned relationships when examining source-target misaligned effects, and extend source-target misalignment research by examining the effect of supervisor organizational embodiment as a moderator of misaligned supervisor- and organization-directed workplace unfairness perceptions and destructive voice behaviors. This article highlights the origins of performance training and voice pedagogy in Canada developed, in part, through the work of Michel Saint-Denis and Iris Warren. It further connects the origins of performance voice to the social sciences, highlighting the historical influences that psychodynamic therapeutic approaches have had toward informing somatic voice methodologies and pedagogy. By revisiting one thread within the historic collaboration between these fields, the article encourages actively revisiting cross-disciplinary collaborations to support knowledge-creation; which has the potential to advance both fields and encourage the development of trauma-informed, embodied frameworks to support integrated pedagogies and accessible interventions across disciplines. Appearance and voice are essential factors impacting users' affective preferences for humanoid robots. However, little is known about how the appearance and voice of humanoid robots jointly influence users' affective preferences and visual attention. We conducted a mixed-design eye-tracking experiment to examine the multisensory integration effect of humanoid robot appearances and voices on users' affective preferences and visual attention. The results showed that the combinations of affectively preferred voices and appearances attracted more affective preferences and shorter average fixation durations. The combinations of non-preferred voices and preferred appearances captured less affective preferences and longer fixation durations. The results suggest that congruent combinations of affectively preferred voices and appearances might motivate a facilitation effect on users' affective preference and the depth of visual attention through audiovisual complements. Incongruent combinations of non-preferred voices and preferred appearances might stimulate an attenuation effect and result in less affective preferences and a deeper retrieval of visual information. Besides, the head attracted the most amount of visual attention regardless of voice conditions. This paper contributes to deepening the understanding of the multisensory integration effect on users' affective preferences and visual attention and providing practical implications for designing humanoid robots satisfying users' affective preferences. A central question in affective science and one that is relevant for its clinical applications is how emotions provided by different stimuli are experienced and represented in the brain. Following the traditional view emotional signals are recognized with the help of emotion concepts that are typically used in descriptions of mental states and emotional experiences, irrespective of the sensory modality. This perspective motivated the search for abstract representations of emotions in the brain, shared across variations in stimulus type (face, body, voice) and sensory origin (visual, auditory). On the other hand, emotion signals like for example an aggressive gesture, trigger rapid automatic behavioral responses and this may take place before or independently of full abstract representation of the emotion. This pleads in favor specific emotion signals that may trigger rapid adaptative behavior only by mobilizing modality and stimulus specific brain representations without relying on higher order abstract emotion categories. To test this hypothesis, we presented participants with naturalistic dynamic emotion expressions of the face, the whole body, or the voice in a functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) study. To focus on automatic emotion processing and sidestep explicit concept-based emotion recognition, participants performed an unrelated target detection task presented in a different sensory modality than the stimulus. By using multivariate analyses to assess neural activity patterns in response to the different stimulus types, we reveal a stimulus category and modality specific brain organization of affective signals. Our findings are consistent with the notion that under ecological conditions emotion expressions of the face, body and voice may have different functional roles in triggering rapid adaptive behavior, even if when viewed from an abstract conceptual vantage point, they may all exemplify the same emotion. This has implications for a neuroethologically grounded emotion research program that should start from detailed behavioral observations of how face, body, and voice expressions function in naturalistic contexts. The reported prevalence of voice disorders in the pediatric population varies widely between studies, ranging from 3.9% to 23%. Despite this, not all children with dysphonia are referred to a voice specialist for further evaluation. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between dysphonia history, voice assessment, and laryngeal findings to help guide referrals of dysphonic children. A retrospective review was conducted of pediatric patients at a tertiary voice clinic between January 2014 and December 2017. Data including dates of presentation, demographics, co-morbidities, presenting symptoms, laryngeal exam findings, Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) scores, and Pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI) scores were collected and analyzed. Of 475 patients initially identified, 459 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed. In all, 272 (59.3%) were male and 187 (40.7%) were female. Mean age at first presentation was 8.6 years old (range: 2-18). Males were more likely to present at a younger age than females. CAPE-V data were available for 439 patients, and pVHI data were available for 109 patients. The mean CAPE-V Overall Severity score was 38.2. The mean total pVHI score was 25.4. Males had higher CAPE-V Overall Severity (40.0 vs. 35.4), Roughness (32.2 vs. 27.6), and Strain scores (37.2 vs. 32.4) than females. Patient pVHI scores did not differ by gender. In all, 283 patients self-reported a length of symptoms prior to evaluation. Children with a longer duration of symptoms prior to evaluation had higher CAPE-V Overall Severity scores. Diagnoses of vocal fold movement impairment and benign vocal fold lesions that were not nodules were associated with higher average CAPE-V Overall Severity scores. Overall, 310 patients (67.5%) were recommended intervention for their dysphonia. These patients had higher CAPE-V Overall Severity scores than those who were solely recommended observation (42.8 vs. 28.0). Males were more likely than females to present with dysphonia and presented with more severe perceptual dysphonia scores on average. The length of symptoms and certain diagnoses correlated with higher CAPE-V Scores. Referrals to a pediatric voice clinic should be considered in patients with a dysphonia history lasting greater than 3 months and in patients with more severe symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To study the variability and diagnostic value of multiple salivary pepsin measurements in the detection of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Methods: Patients with LPR symptoms were consecutively recruited from December 2019 to Augustus 2022. Twenty-one asymptomatic individuals completed the study. The diagnostic was confirmed with hypopharyngeal–esophageal impedance-pH monitoring (HEMII-pH). Patients collected three saliva samples during the 24-h testing period. Symptoms and findings were studied with reflux symptom score-12 and reflux sign assessment. Sensitivity, specificity, positive (PPV) and negative (NPV) predictive values of pepsin measurements were calculated considering morning, post-lunch and post-dinner samples. The consistency and relationship between HEMII-pH, pepsin measurements, and clinical features were investigated. Results: Morning, post-lunch and post-dinner saliva pepsin concentrations were measured in 42 patients. Pepsin measurements were 64.9%, 59.5%, and 59.0% sensitive for morning, post-lunch and post-dinner collections at cutoff ≥ 16 ng/mL. Considering the highest concentration of the three pepsin saliva collections, the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and PPV were 70.5%, 73.0%; 66.7% and 78.9%, respectively. Morning pepsin measurements reported higher consistency, sensitivity, and specificity than post-dinner and post-lunch pepsin measurements. Conclusion: The collection of several saliva pepsin samples improves the detection rate of LPR. In case of high clinical LPR suspicion and negative pepsin test, a HEMII-pH study could provide further diagnostic information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
