A major period of subduction-related volcanism in northern New Zealand began about 20 million years ago; its locus of activity migrated southward during the late Cenozoic in response to changes in convergence between the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates. As the volcanic arc migrated, six discrete fields of small-scale basaltic volcanoes were established behind the subduction system. These volcanoes show geochemical characteristics that reveal patterns of mantle behaviour linked to the rapidly evolving plate tectonic environment of Zealandia. Two northern volcano fields began activity about 8 million years ago and have been active into recent times; their chemical compositions reflect partial melting of shallow mantle and their spatial relationships an essentially static source environment. In contrast, four southern fields are dominated by alkalic magmas that likely ascended rapidly from garnet-bearing asthenospheric sources in a northward migrating pattern of discrete temporal episodes (∼1 ma duration) since 3 Ma. The Northland fields were sourced in mantle that became coupled to the lithosphere and have remained active during the last 8 Ma. The Auckland fields are interpreted to reflect independent actively rising asthenospheric mini-plumes linked to mantle convection associated with but geochemically distinct from the subduction system beneath central North Island New Zealand. Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF) is a basaltic intraplate volcanic field in North Island, New Zealand, upon which >1.6 million people live. Seismic velocity tomography and geochemistry suggest a primary mantle source region at a depth of 70–90 km. Geochemical analysis indicates a range of magma compositions, and that melts ascend with little crustal interaction. Eruptions generally began with a phreatomagmatic phase forming maar and tuff rings with tephra fall, base surges, and ballistic projectiles as the main hazards. Subsequent magmatic phases formed scoria cones, and sometimes produced lava flows. Ages of 47 of the 53 volcanic centres reveal that the AVF first erupted ∼193 ka, and last erupted ∼500 yrs. BP. These geochronological constraints indicate repose periods ≤0.1–13 kyr, which have decreased since ∼60 ka. From known geological and exposure information, and using an interdisciplinary approach, eight future eruption scenarios have been developed for planning processes. Outstanding questions for the AVF concern the cause of mantle melting, the structure of the underlying lithosphere, magma ascent rates, controls on repose periods and eruptive volumes. Answering these questions may improve our understanding of warning periods, monitoring strategies, spatiotemporal risk profiles, and socio-economic impacts of volcanism on New Zealand's largest city. Intra-oceanic arcs are typically associated with intermediate (andesitic) cone volcanoes. However, caldera volcanoes may also form in these settings from very large eruptions, resulting in sudden changes to the magma reservoir. These reservoirs can then produce either semi-continuous or intermittent low-intensity volcanism between major caldera-producing or caldera-deepening eruptions, providing insights into the post-caldera evolution of the system. Hunga volcano (Kingdom of Tonga, Southwest Pacific) is a large mainly submarine edifice that produced a series of caldera-forming eruptions ~900 years ago. Since then, numerous smaller-scale subaerial and submarine eruptions occurred, the most recent forming new islands in 2009 and 2014/15. Pyroclastic deposits associated with these latest eruptions have identical (range ~ 0.1 wt% of all major oxides) andesitic composition that overlap with the primitive end of the slightly wider compositional range of the caldera-forming episodes. Texturally simple plagioclase, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene phenocrysts in pre-, syn - and post-caldera pyroclasts point to a single shallow storage reservoir at 5–8 km depth. Lack of complex zonation indicates that this reservoir is constantly resupplied by low-flux inputs of basaltic andesite magma and is large enough that convective mixing rapidly homogenises new inputs. The reservoir feeds intermittent, low-intensity, post-caldera volcanism with constant andesite composition, driven possibly by magmatic overpressure and "leakage" of gas-rich magma pockets around the edges of the caldera. More primitive and compositionally variable basaltic andesites formed a lava-dominated edifice prior to the caldera-forming event. This suggests a causal link between magma supply dynamics and caldera priming relating to the maturing of the plumbing system and formation of a sustained subvolcanic andesite magma reservoir. Jeju is a volcanic field that has erupted from around 1·8 Myr to c. 1 kyr ago. Activity began with dispersed, basaltic, monogenetic, phreatomagmatic eruptions. Continuing monogenetic volcanism was later joined by more voluminous lava effusion events building a central composite shield. Samples from older (>0·7 Ma) and younger (<0·2 Ma) monogenetic centres were analysed for their whole-rock major element, trace element and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions. Pyroclastic products from the monogenetic centres are dominantly alkali basalt to trachybasalt, whereas the more voluminous lava flows and domes of the central edifice consist of subalkali basalt and alkali basalt to trachyte. Lavas from the Early Pleistocene monogenetic centres are depleted in MgO, Cr and Ni, reflecting considerable olivine fractionation. By contrast, Late Pleistocene–Holocene monogenetic centre magmas fractionated clinopyroxene + olivine at deeper levels. Isotopic compositions show little variation across the suite; however, the Late Pleistocene–Holocene monogenetic centres have generally lower 87Sr/86Sr and 208Pb/204Pb and higher 143Nd/144Nd than the older centres and subalkali lavas. Major and trace element and isotope data suggest a common, shallower source for the high-Al alkali and subalkali lavas, in contrast to a deeper source for the low-Al alkali magmas. We propose that mantle melting was initiated under partially hydrous conditions at a pressure of near 2·5 GPa, followed by drier conditions and extension of the melting zone to 3–3·5 GPa, with a concomitant increase in the volume of melt derived from the shallower part of the system to produce subalkaline magmas. Increasing melt production at shallow depths may be related to accelerated heat transfer resulting from deepening of the melting zone, or increased mantle upwelling. Mantle lenses were uplifted, probably lubricated by shear zones created during the opening of the Sea of Japan c. 15 Myr ago, and reactivated during rotation of the Philippine Sea plate direction of subduction at around 2 Ma. Abstract: Catastrophic volcanic debris avalanches reshape volcanic edifices with up to half of pre-collapse cone volumes being removed. Deposition from this debris avalanche deposit often fills and inundates the surrounding landscape and may permanently change the distribution of drainage networks. On the weakly-incised Mt. Taranaki ring-plain, volcanic debris avalanche deposits typically form a large, wedge shape (in plan view), over all flat-lying fans. Following volcanic debris avalanches a period of intense re-sedimentation commonly begins on ring-plain areas, particularly in wet or temperate climates. This is exacerbated by large areas of denuded landscape, ongoing instability in the scarp/source region, damming of river/stream systems, and in some cases inherent instability of the volcanic debris avalanche deposits. In addition, on Mt. Taranaki, the collapse of a segment of the cone by volcanic debris avalanche often generates long periods of renewed volcanism, generating large volumes of juvenile tephra onto unstable and unvegetated slopes, or construction of new domes with associated rock falls and block-and-ash flows. The distal ring-plain impact from these post-debris avalanche conditions and processes is primarily accumulation of long run-out debris flow and hyperconcentrated flow deposits with a variety of lithologies and sedimentary character. Common to these post-debris avalanche units is evidence for high-water-content flows that are typically non-cohesive. Hence sedimentary variations in these units are high in lateral and longitudinal exposure in relation to local topography. The post-collapse deposits flank large-scale fans and hence similar lithological and chronological sequences can form on widely disparate sectors of the ring plain. These deposits on Mt. Taranaki provide a record of landscape response and ring-plain evolution in three stages that divide the currently identified Warea Formation: 1) the deposition of broad fans of material adjacent to the debris avalanche unit; 2) channel formation and erosion of Stage 1 deposits, primarily at the contact between debris avalanche deposits and the Stage 1 deposits and the refilling of these channels; and 3) the development of broad tabular sheet flows on top of the debris avalanche, leaving sediments between debris avalanche mounds. After a volcanic debris avalanche, these processes represent an ever changing and evolving hazard-scape with hazard maps needing to be regularly updated to take account of which stage the sedimentary system is in. Abstract: The Samoan Islands have experienced >2 million years of volcanism, culminating in historic eruptions at both the east and western ends of the chain including a major lava-producing episode on the island of Savai''i from AD 1905–1911. Upolu in Western Samoa has several areas mapped as early Holocene in age (>5 ka), but here we present new evidence for fresh volcanic landforms and deposits, supported by a radiocarbon date of 1915±65 yrs B.P., giving a maximum age to a phreatomagmatic tuff cone offshore of Cape Tapaga, east Upolu. In addition, we report on a parallel investigation of the oral traditions of communities surrounding fresh volcanic landforms that may reflect distant “volcanic memories” passed down over generations. To accommodate Samoan cultural structures, oral traditional knowledge was sought through semi-structured interviews with small groups (3–4) or individuals. Samoan facilitators focused on high-ranking and traditionally respected (particularly elderly) individuals for explanations of the origins of local features, including their genesis, use and any related geo-hazards. Areas targeted were those where young eruptions (<3500 yr BP) were suspected from geological mapping. In stark contrast to communities in Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea or the Solomon Islands, the village communities show extremely limited knowledge of their volcanic heritage. Youthful volcanic landforms are often not recognised as such and appear to play little role in everyday life. Few, if any, legends are attached to any volcanic feature. Instead, oral traditions deal primarily with the origins of Samoans (overlain by strong Christian teachings), and past disputes/battles and wrongdoings between tribes/neighbours. The only exceptions to this were identified in legends from East Upolu, where offshore islands (tuff cones) are associated with late Holocene explosive phreatomagmatic volcanism. Maps drawn by individuals and groups interviewed, highlighted the resources and landscapes important in their lives. The majority of these were prepared as 3D oblique-view sketches, rather than plan-views, showing little in common with typical hazard maps used in the area. In addition, maps were commonly restricted strictly to boundaries of local communities, ignoring major features (such as fresh volcanic cones) that were in the territory of “next door” villages. These perspectives need to be focused upon in future iterations of hazard maps and hazard-education programmes for Samoa and similar Polynesian communities. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Lava domes pose a significant hazard to infrastructure, human lives and the environment when they collapse. Their stability is partly dictated by internal mechanical properties. Here, we present a detailed investigation into the lithology and composition of a < 250-year-old lava dome exposed at the summit of Mt. Taranaki in the western North Island of New Zealand. We also examined samples from 400 to 600-year-old block-and-ash flow deposits, formed by the collapse of earlier, short-lived domes extruded at the same vent. Rocks with variable porosity and groundmass crystallinity were compared using measured compressive and tensile strength, derived from deformation experiments performed at room temperature and low (3 MPa) confining pressures. Based on data obtained, porosity exerts the main control on rock strength and mode of failure. High porosity (> 23%) rocks show low rock strength (< 41 MPa) and dominantly ductile failure, whereas lower porosity rocks (5-23%) exhibit higher measured rock strengths (up to 278 MPa) and brittle failure. Groundmass crystallinity, porosity and rock strength are intercorrelated. High groundmass crystal content is inversely related to low porosity, implying crystallisation and degassing of a slowly undercooled magma that experienced rheological stiffening under high pressures deeper within the conduit. This is linked to a slow magma ascent rate and results in a lava dome with higher rock strength. Samples with low groundmass crystallinity are associated with higher porosity and lower rock strength, and represent magma that ascended more rapidly, with faster undercooling, and solidification in the upper conduit at low pressures. Our experimental results show that the inherent strength of rocks within a growing dome may vary considerably depending on ascent/emplacement rates, thus significantly affecting dome stability and collapse hazards. Topics discussed include the relationship between chemical characteristics and erupted volumes in the Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF) in New Zealand and the selection of five eruptions from a possible 53 from the field to provide insight into mantle source properties and processes.

Monogenetic basaltic volcanism is characterised by a complex array of eruptive behaviours, reflecting spatial and temporal variability of the magmatic properties (e.g. composition, eruptive volume, magma flux) as well as environmental factors at the vent site (e.g. availability of water, country rock geology, faulting). These combine to produce changes in eruption style over brief periods (minutes to days) in many eruption episodes. Monogenetic eruptions in some volcanic fields often start with a phreatomagmatic vent-opening phase that later transforms into “dry” magmatic explosive or effusive activity, with a strong variation in the duration and importance of this first phase. Such an eruption sequence pattern occurred in 83% of the known eruption in the 0.25 My-old Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF), New Zealand. In this investigation, the eruptive volumes were compared with the sequences of eruption styles preserved in the pyroclastic record at each volcano of the AVF, as well as environmental influencing factors, such as distribution and thickness of water-saturated semi- to unconsolidated sediments, topographic position, distances from known fault lines. The AVF showed that there is no correlation between ejecta ring volumes and environmental influencing factors that is valid for the entire AVF. In contrary, using a set of comparisons of single volcanoes with well-known and documented sequences, resultant eruption sequences could be explained by predominant patterns of the environment in which these volcanoes were erupted. Based on the spatial variability of these environmental factors, a first-order susceptibility hazard map was constructed for the AVF that forecasts areas of largest likelihood for phreatomagmatic eruptions by overlaying topographical and shallow geological information. Combining detailed phase-by-phase breakdowns of eruptive volumes and the event sequences of the AVF, along with the new susceptibility map, more realistic eruption scenarios can be developed for different parts of the volcanic field. Abstract: Monogenetic basaltic volcanism is characterised by a complex array of behaviours in the spatial distribution of magma output and also temporal variability in magma flux and eruptive frequency. Investigating this in detail is hindered by the difficulty in evaluating ages of volcanic events as well as volumes erupted in each volcano. Eruptive volumes are an important input parameter for volcanic hazard assessment and may control eruptive scenarios, especially transitions between explosive and effusive behaviour and the length of eruptions. Erosion, superposition and lack of exposure limit the accuracy of volume determination, even for very young volcanoes. In this study, a systematic volume estimation model is developed and applied to the Auckland Volcanic Field in New Zealand. In this model, a basaltic monogenetic volcano is categorised in six parts. Subsurface portions of volcanoes, such as diatremes beneath phreatomagmatic volcanoes, or crater infills, are approximated by geometrical considerations, based on exposed analogue volcanoes. Positive volcanic landforms, such as scoria/spatter cones, tephras rings and lava flow, were defined by using a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) survey-based Digital Surface Model (DSM). Finally, the distal tephra associated with explosive eruptions was approximated using published relationships that relate original crater size to ejecta volumes. Considering only those parts with high reliability, the overall magma output (converted to Dense Rock Equivalent) for the post-250 ka active Auckland Volcanic Field in New Zealand is a minimum of 1.704km3. This is made up of 1.329km3 in lava flows, 0.067km3 in phreatomagmatic crater lava infills, 0.090km3 within tephra/tuff rings, 0.112km3 inside crater lava infills, and 0.104km3 within scoria cones. Using the minimum eruptive volumes, the spatial and temporal magma fluxes are estimated at 0.005km3/km2 and 0.007km3/ka. The temporal–volumetric evolution of Auckland is characterised by an increasing magma flux in the last 40ky, which is inferred to be triggered by plate tectonics processes (e.g. increased asthenospheric shearing and backarc spreading of underneath the Auckland region). Crustal extension of the southern portion of the Taupo Rift in the Central North Island of New Zealand is mostly accommodated by normal faulting and rare dike intrusions. To better understand how extension is accommodated and how volcanoes and faults interact, we provide a new integration of the tectonic and volcanic history of this young section of the Taupo Rift from geological evidence. Fault acceleration and deceleration apparently coincide with episodes of voluminous volcanic eruptions during the last 100 ka. Using geological data, we detect three modes of volcano-fault interactions active during different periods: (1) increased volcanism (eruptive volume) coupled with increased fault slip-rate (e.g., 26–11 cal kyr BP); (2) increased volcanism, but decreased adjacent fault activity (e.g., 11–10 cal kyr BP Pahoka-Mangamate "unzipping" period); and (3) decreased volcanism (low rates and volumes), but increased fault slip-rate (e.g., 45–25 cal kyr BP). The availability of melt production at depth is a first-order factor controlling the geodynamic processes of coeval fault slip-rate and magma volume variations within this rift. We hypothesize that progressive shallowing of magma drives transition of mode (1) to (2); i.e., maintaining high volcanic rates but decreasing fault slip. Second-order interactions, such as stress-transfer, is modelled by simple Coulomb stress transfer scenarios to other faults and volcanoes surrounding rift elements. Our results strongly suggest that fluctuations in magma input through time strongly influence both eruption frequency and seismic cycles in volcanic rifts.
