The Pampean flat slab in central Chile and Argentina is characterized by the inland migration and subsequent cessation of arc volcanism since the mid‐Miocene. Slab flattening also affects the distribution and number of intermediate‐depth earthquakes and the evolution of the overlying continental thermal structure. In this study, we combine thermal‐mechanical models with petrological models to examine temporal changes in pressure, temperature, and composition during flat‐slab subduction and estimate water carrying capacity, predicted melt distributions and predicted changes in melt composition. Model results indicate that the present‐day flattened Nazca plate carries water to ∼700 km inland from the trench and could cause flux melting if the material above the slab remains fertile. Observed slab seismicity matches areas where hydrated materials have ∼>3 wt% H2O in the oceanic crust and mantle lithosphere. Seismicity increases as slab water carrying capacity decreases (slab dehydration). As P‐T conditions and compositions of the rock trapped above the slab change during slab flattening, flux melting switches from a peridotite‐dominated early phase to a combined mid‐ocean ridge basalt/eclogite and peridotite melting at ∼8 Ma. The results provide broad consistency with known earthquake distributions, seismic velocities, and observed temporal and spatial changes in volcanic patterns above the Pampean flat slab and point toward the role of melt depletion in the decrease and ultimate cessation of arc volcanism in this region. The Central Andes of southern Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile (between 12°S and 42°S) comprise the largest orogenic plateau in the world associated with abundant arc volcanism, the Central Andean Plateau, as well as multiple segments of flat-slab subduction making this part of the Earth a unique place to study various aspects of active plate tectonics. The goal of this continental-scale ambient noise tomography study is to incorporate broad-band seismic data from 20 seismic networks deployed incrementally in the Central Andes from 1994 May to 2012 August, to image the vertically polarized shear wave velocity (Vsv) structure of the South American Cordillera. Using dispersion measurements calculated from the cross-correlation of 330 broad-band seismic stations, we construct Rayleigh wave phase velocity maps in the period range of 8–40 s and invert these for the shear wave velocity (Vsv) structure of the Andean crust. We provide a dispersion misfit map as well as uncertainty envelopes for our Vsv model and observe striking first-order correlations with our shallow results (∼5 km) and the morphotectonic provinces as well as subtler geological features indicating our results are robust. Our results reveal for the first time the full extent of the mid-crustal Andean low-velocity zone that we tentatively interpret as the signature of a very large volume Neogene batholith. This study demonstrates the efficacy of integrating seismic data from numerous regional broad-band seismic networks to approximate the high-resolution coverage previously only available though larger networks such as the EarthScope USArray Transportable Array in the United States. Most flat-slab subduction regions are marked by an absence of arc volcanism, which is consistent with closure of the hot mantle wedge as the subducting plate flattens below the continent. Farther inland, low surface heat flow is observed, which is generally attributed to cooling of the continent by the underlying flat slab. However, modern flat slabs have only been in place for <20 Ma, and it is unclear whether there has been sufficient time for cooling to occur. We use numerical models to assess temporal variations in continental thermal structure during flat-slab subduction. Our models show that the flat slab leads to continental cooling on timescales of tens of millions of years. Cool slab temperatures must diffuse through the continental lithosphere, resulting in a delay between slab emplacement and surface cooling. Therefore, the timescales primarily depend on the flat-slab depth with shallower slabs resulting in shorter timescales. The magnitude of cooling increases for a shallow or long-lived flat slab, old subducting plate, and fast convergence rates. For regions with flat slabs at 45-70 km depth (e.g., Mexico and Peru), shallow continental cooling initiates 5-10 Ma after slab emplacement, and low surface heat flow in these regions is largely explained by the presence of the flat slab. However, for the Pampean region in Chile, with an ~100-km-deep slab, our models predict that conductive cooling has not yet affected the surface heat flow. Abstract: The tectonic and geologic setting of eastern Oregon includes the volcanically active High Lava Plains (HLP) province and the accreted terrains of the Blue and Wallowa Mountains and is bounded by the Columbia River flood basalts to the north, Basin and Range extension to the south, the Cascade arc to the west, and stable North America to the east. Several models have been proposed to explain the tectonic evolution of eastern Oregon and, in particular, the voluminous volcanic activity in the HLP, but a consensus on which model fully describes the complex range of processes remains elusive. Measurements of the seismic anisotropy that results from active mantle flow beneath the region can provide a crucial test of such models. To constrain this anisotropy, here we present new SKS splitting results obtained at approximately 200 broadband seismic stations in eastern Oregon and the surrounding region. Data come from the USArray Transportable Array (TA) and two temporary experiments carried out in the HLP and in the Wallowa Mountains. Our splitting data set includes ~2900 individual splitting measurements from SKS phases recorded between 2006 and 2008. Stations in eastern Oregon exhibit significant shear wave splitting, with average delay times at individual stations between ~0.8s and ~2.7s. In the HLP, nearly all observed fast directions are approximately E-W, while to the north in the Blue and Wallowa Mountains there is more variability in the splitting patterns. The average delay time observed at stations located in the heart of the HLP province is ~2s, well above the global average of ~1s for continental regions. We infer from the large split times and homogeneous fast directions that there must be significant active flow in a roughly E-W direction in the asthenosphere beneath the HLP; this inferred flow field places a strong constraint on models that seek to explain the young tectonomagmatic activity in the region. In the Wallowa region, the anisotropic signature is more complicated and there may be a significant contribution from fossil fabrics in the crust or mantle lithosphere. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
