The article deals with the Polish-Ukrainian public discussions on the Volhynian mass murders from February to July 2003 and the joint 60th-anniversary commemoration of this massacre, which happened July 11 in Pavlivka village, the Volhynian region in Ukraine. The research is written from the perspective of the conception of reconciliation. The main question is the extent to which this reconciliation was successful. The article is based on Polish and Ukrainian media materials, official statements, letters and appeals of different groups and public figures, and five unpublished interviews conducted by the author in January – June 2019. The methodological research frame is a theory of the politics of memory by Jan Kubik and Michael Bernhardt. The approach is helpful for the classification of mnemonic actors, who participated in the debates, and the research of various memories of Volhynian mass murders. The article stresses the importance of this discussion and the joint commemoration of victims. Leading politicians and intellectuals participated in the debate, especially in Ukraine. The scholars from both sides, who toke the position of mnemonic pluralists, played an important role. They tried to rethink the past of their country and the responsibility in the Polish-Ukrainian conflict. However, this rethinking was difficult for them. Appeals to reconciliation had a spiritual dimension. Therefore the church joined it, although quite carefully. The commemorative action in Pavlivka happened mainly because of state resources. It was inaccessible to a significant part of the Ukrainian public. However, even in this situation, the commemorative action in Pavlivka could contribute to overcoming the conflict of memories if both countries were more pluralistic in the following years., У статті розглядаються польсько-українські публічні дискусії про масові вбивства 1943 р. на Волині, що активно тривали з лютого по липень 2003 р., а також спільне відзначення 60-х роковин цих вбивств, яке відбулося 11 липня у селі Павлівка Волинської області. Аналіз здійснюється з перспективи концепції примирення. Головне питання полягає в тому, на скільки це примирення було успішним. Джерельною базою статті є польська та українська преса, опубліковані офіційні заяви, листи та звернення різних груп і тексти окремих діячів, а також п’ять неопублікованих інтерв’ю, взяті авторкою у січні – червні 2019 р. Методологічною рамкою для дослідження є теорія політики пам’яті Яна Кубіка та Майкла Бернгардта, яка застосовується для класифікації мнемонічних акторів, які брали участь в дискусіях, та аналізу різних пам’ятей про масові вбивства на Волині в Польщі та в Україні. У статті наголошується на важливості того, що дискусія та спільне вшанування жертв відбулися. Вже сам цей факт можна вважати успіхом. В дискусії взяли участь провідні політики та інтелектуали, зокрема в Україні, і це обговорення перейшло із дискусії у вузьких заанґажованих колах у публічну сферу. Важливою була роль інтелектуалів з обох сторін, які зайняли плюралістичну позицію. Вони намагалися переосмислити минуле передусім своєї країни та відповідальність представників своєї національності в польсько-українському конфлікті, хоч це іноді вдавалося складно. Заклики до примирення мали духовний вимір і до нього, хоч ще досить обережно, долучилася церква. Акція у Павлівці відбулася головним чином завдяки застосуванню владних ресурсів. Їй бракувало більшої відкритості та залучення громадськості з українського боку. Однак навіть у такому вигляді вона могла сприяти подоланню конфлікту пам’ятей у випадку більшого плюралізму в обох країнах в наступні роки.

The article covers the urban formation of Kremenets on the basis of the fixation site plan of the city of the second half of the 1930s and other project documentation of the Second Polish Republic period. The relevance of the research topic is determined by the relatively limited array of cartographic sources capturing the features of Kremenets planning pattern in the interwar period. This publication aims to substantiate the evolution of the architecture of Kremenets that was based on the identification of the architectural heritage of the Polish, and the involvement of avant-garde ideas. A special factor of relevance is the emphasis on the value of the architectural and landscape ensemble of Kremenets as an exceptional example of the vernacular town of Western Volhynia. The research methodology is based on general, interdisciplinary and disciplinary, that include architectural and town-planning research methods. A comparative analysis of the found documents makes it possible to identify features of urban development of Kremenets under the influence of various factors: spatial and landscape situation, social and cultural context, trends in urban development in the relevant periods of European history. The object of research is the fixation plan of the city of Kremenets in the 1930s, which was discovered by the author as a result of working with materials from the funds of the State Archives of Ternopil region. The research is accompanied by other published documents and primary sources of the Second Polish Republic period., У статті висвітлюється містобудівний розвиток Кременця на основі фіксаційного плану міста ІІ-ї половини 1930-х років та іншої проєктної документації періоду Другої Речі Посполита. Окреслено чинники трансформації міської тканини в контексті польських міжвоєнних містобудівних доктрин. Розглянуто особливості та підходи до формування архітектурно-просторової структури міста Кременець у міжвоєнний період.

Summary. Polish Eastern Borderlands societies of resettlers from the east, their descendants and adherents expressed the institutional dimension of politics of history, commemorative and publicistic practices. The purpose of the article is to critically analyze historical discourses of Polish eastern borderlands societies, in particular the interpretation of the military-political confrontation in Volhynia and Galicia in 1943–1944. Special attention is given to anti-Ukrainian historical narratives of periodical "On the Boundary" ("Na Rubieży"), organ of Association for the Commemoration of the Victims of the Crimes of Ukrainian Nationalists. The level of their prevalence in Polish society is reconstructed. The research methodology is based on the theory of communities of memory, developed by Maurice Halbwachs, Jan Assman, Lech Nijakowski. According to it, the formative features of the community of memory are historical experience, belief in the uniqueness of one’s own suffering, and constant cultural transmission. The scientific novelty of the article lies in a critical analysis of previously unexplored aspects of the activities of Polish eastern borderlands societies, in particular the publicistic narratives of the magazine "On the Boundary" on the Ukrainian-Polish military-political confrontation in Volhynia and Galicia in 1943–1944. It is shown that Kresovian interpretation of Volhynia tragedy of 1943 covered about a quarter of Polish society and received periodic support among political forces and authorities. Evidence of the influence of Eastern Borderlands societies were the state financial support of their publishing projects, bringing the issue of confrontation to the international level. As a result of the study, conclusions were drawn. Institutional implementation of politics of history by Polish Kresovians of the late 1990 – early 2000 was based on personal tragic experience, as well as the mythology of the "Eastern Borderlands" ("Kresy Wschodnie") as a frontier of civilization and a place of Polish national memory. An active institutional core of the Kresovians was the Association for the Commemoration of the Victims of the Crimes of Ukrainian Nationalists, with its organizational center in Wrocław. Its socio-political and commemorative activities focused on honoring the memory of Polish victims of the interethnic confrontation in Volhynia and Galicia in 1943–1944, criticizing of attempts to reach a Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation. Liberal or conservative initiatives of Ukrainian and Polish intellectuals, politicians to agree on a common vision of difficult issues of the dramatic past did not find any support in Kresovian circles. The policy on the history of the Kresovians as a community of memory placed Volhynia and Galicia within a nostalgic mnemonic narrative with an emphasis on the exclusivity of Polish suffering, unhealed historical trauma, and the impossibility of interethnic conciliation., Анотація. Польські земляцькі об՚єднання переселенців зі сходу, їх нащадки та однодумці виражали інституційний вимір політик щодо історії, комеморативних і публіцистичних практик. Метою статті є критичний аналіз історичних дискурсів польських кресов՚яцьких товариств, зокрема щодо інтерпретації військово-політичного протистояння на Волині та в Галичині у 1943–1944 рр. на основі аналізу публікацій часопису «На рубєжи» («Na Rubieży»), друкованого органу Товариства увічнення пам՚яті жертв злочинів українських націоналістів, реконструйовано антиукраїнські історичні наративи кресов՚яків, виявлено рівень їхньої поширеності в польському суспільстві. Методологічною основою студії стала теорія спільнот пам՚яті, розроблена Морісом Гальбваксом, Яном Ассманом, Лехом Ніяковським. Згідно з нею, формаційними ознаками спільноти пам՚яті є історичний досвід, переконання у винятковості власних страждань, постійний культурний переказ. Наукова новизна статті полягає у критичному аналізі раніше не досліджених аспектів діяльності польських земляцьких товариств, зокрема публіцистичних наративів часопису «На рубєжи» щодо українсько-польського військово-політичного протистояння на Волині та у Галичині в 1943–1944 рр. Показано, що кресов՚яцька інтерпретація волинської трагедії охоплювала близько чверті польського суспільства і отримувала періодичну підтримку серед політичних сил та органів влади. Свідченням впливу земляцьких товариств стали державна фінансова підтримка їх видавничих проєктів, винесення проблематики протистояння на міжнародний рівень. У результаті проведеного дослідження зроблено висновки. Інституційна реалізація політик щодо історії польськими земляцькими середовищами кінця ХХ – початку ХХI ст. ґрунтувалася на особистому трагічному досвіді, а також міфології «східних кресів», як цивілізаційного рубежу та місця польської національної пам՚яті. Активним інституційним осередком кресов՚яків було Товариства увічнення пам՚яті жертв злочинів українських націоналістів із організаційним центром у Вроцлаві. Його суспільно-політична та комеморативна активність зосереджувалася навколо вшанування пам՚яті польських жертв міжнаціонального збройно-політичного протистояння на Волині та в Галичині у 1943–1944 рр. У часописі «На рубєжи» односторонньо засуджували політику ОУН-УПА, представляли їх у негативному образі та критикували спроби досягнення польсько-українського порозуміння. Ліберальні чи консервативні ініціативи українських й польських інтелектуалів, політиків щодо узгодження спільного бачення важких питань драматичного минулого не знаходили жодної підтримки у польських земляцьких середовищах. Політика щодо історії кресов՚яків, як спільноти пам՚яті, вміщувала Волинь та Галичину в рамках ностальгійного мнемонічного наративу з акцентом на винятковість польських страждань, незагоєну історичну травму та неможливість міжнаціонального порозуміння.

The article represents an investigation of the Mukachevo bishop Sergius's mission in Kyivan Metropolitanate during the first quarter of the XVII century. The author analyzed pieces of information from proper Belarussian, Hungarian, Romanian, Russian and Ukrainian sources and ascertained that the bishop was exactly in Volhynia and Belarus in periods while there were no fixed mentions of him in documents from the Mukachevo eparchy and historic Hungarian kingdom. Volodymyr Moroz explored this hierarch became an outstanding participant of the Orthodox circle that did not accept the Union of Brest's 1596 decisions. He argues Sergius had his residence in St. Michael monastery in Volhynian town Stepanj, Ukraine. From there, this bishop, in common with other hierarchs, managed the Orthodox part of the Kyivan Metropolitanate. The paper shows that Sergius had significant support from the powerful Ostrogski and Zasławski families. Furthermore, he was not only one the Orthodox magnate Konstanty-Wasyl Ostrogski who helped the bishop but also those of Ostrogski's and Zasławski's who already were Roman-Catholics. As the researcher founded, Sergius even ruled the Orthodox part of the historic Lutsk and Ostrog Eparchy. Moreover, that was the patriarch Theophanes III of Jerusalem, who appointed him to this position. With peculiar care, the author describes the content of the bishop's work in the Kyivan Metropolitanate, like the appointing hegumens to monasteries and affirmation constitutions for a Church brotherhood. On the other hand, Volodymyr Moroz concerns the backward influence of Sergius's mission in the Kyivan Metropolitanate on the Mukachevo Eparchy. Thus, historian declares that he was the Sergius, owing to whom the Ostrog printing center's books could penetrate to the Zakarpattia. At all, the scholar examined information about the bishop's envoys to the Moscow tsar in 1624. Henceforth, the paper significantly eliminates a lack of information about the bishop Sergius, about relations between the Kyivan Metropolitanate and Mukachevo Eparchy, and the administration of the Orthodox part of the Kyivan Metropolitanate in the first quarter of the XVII century., Стаття присвячена дослідженню діяльності мукачівського єпископа Сергія на теренах Київської митрополії в першій чверті XVII ст. На підставі аналізу білоруських, румунських, російських, угорських та українських джерел автор доводить, що в періоди, коли інформація про цього ієрарха відсутня в документах історичного Закарпаття, він перебував на Волині та Білорусі, де став одним з активних діячів антиунійного табору: спільно з іншими православними ієрархами підтримував ту частину Київської митрополії, яка не прийняла рішення унійного собору в Бересті 1596 р. і згодом залишилася майже без ієрархії. У розвідці встановлено, що місцем перебування Сергія на Волині був Степанський монастир св. Михаїла. Володимир Мороз демонструє, як на практиці мукачівський єпископ користався підтримкою князів Острозьких і Заславських, причому не тільки православного мецената Костянтина-Василя Острозького, а й тих представників обох родин, які вже стали римо-католиками. Дослідник обґрунтовує думку про те, що Сергій наприкінці першої чверті XVII ст. якийсь час був фактичним керівником православної частини історичної Луцької і Острозької єпархії, отримавши відповідне призначення від єрусалимського патріарха Феофана ІІІ. Особливу увагу в розвідці присвячено розкриттю дійсного єпископського служіння мукачівського архиєрея в Київській митрополії, зокрема призначення ігуменів монастирів у Погребищі й Дубні, затвердження статуту Мінського православного братства. З іншого боку, у статті підняте питання про зворотній вплив місії єпископа. Зокрема, висловлено думку, що саме завдяки Сергію в Мукачівську єпархію могли потрапляти видання острозького книговидавничого центру, в тому числі Острозька Біблія 1581 р. Окремо автор розглядає повідомлення джерел про візит посланців єпископа Сергія до московського царя у 1624 р. Таким чином представлене дослідження частково усуває дотеперішній брак інформації про названого єпископа, взаємозв’язки Мукачівської єпархії і Київської митрополії у вказаний період і, зрештою, про способи збереження порядку і врядування православною частиною історичної Київської митрополії у період від Берестейської унії і до встановлення православної ієрархії у 1620 р.

The article deals with the history of everyday life of the Ukrainian parochial clergy of the late 16th – first half of the 17th century. This was a very important time period for both the history of the Church in Ukraine and Ukraine itself. It was then when the Ukrainian society, divided by confessional identification, found itself on the crossroad of civilizational choice. Further political, social, and religious transformations in Ukraine were significantly influenced by national and religious movements of that epoch. In native and foreign historiography, the mentioned processes were examined within the context of global political and cultural development of Central and Eastern Europe. However, “small living worlds” of petty nobles, clergy, bourgeoisie, and peasants have not been sufficiently studied, as well as the motivation for actions of great masses of population, who profoundly impacted the cultural progress of Ukraine.The article is based on the polemical work by Cassian Sakowicz “Perspektiwa” (“Perspective”) (1642), with the additional information from the works of his opponents (Petro Mohyla and Pachomiusz Oranski). The author makes an attempt to explore the everyday life history of the Ukrainian parochial clergy belonging to the first generations after the Union. The author examines the questions related to the origin of the parochial church senior priests, level of their education, professional ability, and material security. Major attention is paid to venal practices in the church structures (both Orthodox and Uniate), which considerably caused the decay of religious life on the parochial level. The social state of the priests is examined separately, as well as their interactions with the land-owners and parishes.The author argues that despite the low level of professional ability of the priests and lack of special educational institutions, the representatives of higher Uniate clergy and well-educated monks from the Basilian Fathers’ community did their best to improve the educational level and religious upbringing of the parochial priests. It can be concluded that this activity caused the development of the confessional identification of the Uniate believers., Статтю присвячено історії повсякдення українського парафіяльного духовенства кінця XVI – першої половини XVII ст. – періоду, надзвичайно важливого як для історії Церкви в Україні, так і для історії України загалом. Саме тоді українське суспільство, поділене за конфесійною ознакою, опинилося на роздоріжжі цивілізаційного вибору. Подальші політичні, соціальні та релігійні перетворення в Україні відбувалися під значним впливом національно-релігійних рухів цієї епохи. У вітчизняній і зарубіжній історіографії згадані процеси розглядали під кутом зору глобального політичного й культурного розвитку Центральної та Східної Європи. Натомість «малі життєві світи» дрібної шляхти, духовенства, міщан, селян лишалися малодослідженими. Разом з тим була до кінця нез’ясованою мотивація вчинків широких верств населення, від яких значною мірою залежав поступ культури в Україні.На основі полемічного твору Касіяна Саковича Perspeсtiwa (1642), а також із залученням додаткових даних з праць його опонентів – Петра Могили та Пахомія Оранського – зроб­лено спробу дослідити історію повсякдення українського парафіяльного духовенства в часи перших післяунійних поколінь. Розглянуто питання, пов’язані з походженням настоятелів парафіяльних храмів, рівнем їхньої освіти, фахової підготовки та матеріального забезпечення тощо. Особливу увагу приділено корупції в церковних структурах (як православних, так і унійних), яка стала однією з ключових причин занепаду релігійного життя на парафіяльному рівні. Окремо розглядався соціальний статус ієреїв, вивчалися їхні стосунки з дідичами та громадами, в яких вони проводили пастирське служіння. Відзначено, що попри низький рівень фахової підготовки пресвітерів і нестачу профільних навчальних закладів представники вищого унійного духовенства й освіченого чернецтва з кола ченців-василіан багато робили для підвищення рівня освіти та релігійного виховання парафіяльних священиків. Встановлено, що саме завдяки цій діяльності розпочалося формування конфесійної свідомості уніатів.

The article observes the clothes of noble household workers of early modern Volhynia in the context of social practice of awarding with clothes for service. The article also describes the nomenclature of garments that were used by servants and wage workers., Статтю присвячено дослідженню одягу робітників у шляхетських маєтках Волині ранньомодерної доби. Розглянуто одяг як складову тогочасних соціальних практик винагороди за службу. Визначено номенклатуру предметів одягу, який був у користуванні челяді та найманих робітників.

У статті розглянуто історію родини волинських чехів Прокупеків, яка емігрувала з Чехії на територію Волинської губернії у 80-х роках ХІХ ст. Для детального вивчення особливостей еміграційного руху чехів до Росії важливі виокремлення людського фактора, показ впливів еміграції на окрему людину та родину. Історію сімʼї Прокупеків розглянуто крізь призму історії чеської імміграції в Російській імперії. Вирізняються три покоління родини й визначається рівень їх соціальної адаптації протягом ХІХ–ХХ ст. Проведено паралелі між волинською общиною чехів та чеською діаспорою Києва, визначено їхні характерні риси. Виокремлено проблему асиміляції чеського елементу в середовищі іноетнічного населення. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukrainian society faced a new reality. The new reality involved consolidation and transformation of collective identities. The reinvigoration of national identity led to a change in the emphasis on how the past was dealt with – many things which were regarded as negative by the Soviet regime became presented as positive in independent Ukraine. The war-time nationalist movement, represented by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), became one of the re-configured themes of history. While most of the studies of memory of the OUN and UPA concentrated on the use of the history of the OUN and UPA by nationalist parties, this study goes beyond the analysis of such use of history and scrutinizes the meaning of this history in nation- and state-building processes in relation to memory work realized on the small-scale regional and local levels with the main focus on Rivne and Rivne oblast’. Moreover, this book focusses not only on the “producers” of memory, but also on the “consumers” of memory, the area which is largely understudied in the field of memory studies. In the book the main emphasis is put on monuments which are regarded as catalysts and symptoms of memory. The present study showed that the OUN and UPA are used more as the metaphors of the anti-Soviet and anti-communist struggle for independence than as historical entities. This past is largely mythologized. Functioning as a myth the memory of the OUN and UPA obliterates difficult knowledge that the historical research reveals on the questionable activities and ideology of those organizations. As a result, the past of the OUN and UPA is re-imagined, re-filled with new meanings so that it is used along even with the democratic and pro-European claims in the present. It was especially well-observed during the Orange Revolution in 2004 and during the Euromaidan in 2013-2014, when the European Union’s flags were seen next to the OUN’s red-and-black flags or when the pro-European slogans were proclaimed alongside the OUN and UPA slogans. At the same time, the results demonstrated an intricate complexity of memory work shaped by intensive dynamics of private and public, grassroots and official, local and national encounters. Although there have been attempts made by political actors to draw a direct link between the national identity, political allegiances and proposed heroic version of memory, the study showed, that such attempts did not really work. In the pluralistic context the meanings are too fluid and adherence to one version of history does not preclude adherences to other versions of history which are presented as diametrically opposite in the political sphere. As result, on the recipients’ grassroots level, the memory reveals its amalgamated characteristics. Drawing on studies about post-colonial subjectivities and theories of remediation developed in memory studies, this book explores the changes in memory culture of contemporary Ukraine and examines the role of memory in producing new meanings under the rapidly changing conditions after the collapse of the Soviet Union up to 2014. The book contributes to the studies of memory culture in post-Communist countries as well as to the studies of society in contemporary Ukraine.

У статті висвітлюється роль, яку відіграло радянське керівництво в українсько-польському міжнаціо-нальному конфлікті на Волині за часів Другої світової війни. The article deals with the role played by the Soviet leadership in the Ukrainian-Polish nationality conflict in Volhynia in the years 1939–1945.

У статті проаналізовано основні програмні документи, які забезпечували діяльність професійних спілок на території Волинського воєводства у міжвоєнний період та висвітлюються завдання, у розв’язанні яких профспілки відігравали значну роль. In the article analysed basic position papers which was instrumental in activity of trade unions in the Volhynia province in an intermilitary period and isleduyutsya task, in the decision of which trade unions played a considerable role.

Українсько-польський конфлікт на терені західноукраїнських земель під час Другої світової війни є одною зі складних проблем в історії двох сусідніх народів. Частина істориків оцінює наслідки цього конфлікту як «етнічну чистку», що її здійснили українські націоналісти проти поляків, інші – як «геноцид» з боку українського населення проти поляків унаслідок тривалої політики польських урядів і польського підпілля. У цій статті зроблено спробу простежити українсько-польські стосунки в західноукраїнських землях під час Другої світової війни з позицій ретроспективи і з урахуванням міжнародного контексту. Автор вважає, що в період «великої» війни водночас точилася «мала» й незнана війна між українцями і поляками на Волині та в Галичині. Це була війна між українським і польським національно-визвольними рухами за державну прина-лежність цих земель у післявоєнний період. Український національно-визвольний рух, очолюваний ОУН і УПА, прагнув створити Українську незалежну державу і не допустити відновлення на них польського та радянського режимів. Українські націоналісти, спираючись на підтримку більшості населення, не зупинялися перед застосуванням всіх можливих радикальних засобів для досягнення мети, включно з репресивними, проти польського цивільного населення. Польські правлячі кола і підпілля намагалися зробити все можливе, щоб повернути вказані землі до складу післявоєнної Польської держави, ігноруючи прагнення українського населення до незалежності і застосовуючи проти нього та його збройних сил свої військові формування. Під час цієї «малої» війни, апогей якої припав на 1943–1944 рр., загинуло багато цивільних представників обох народів. Відповідальність за такий розвиток українсько-польських відносин та їх наслідки лежала на лідерах українського і польського визвольних рухів, які не змогли досягнути компромісу в умовах загрози для обох народів з боку нацистського та радянського тоталітарних режимів. The Ukrainian-Polish conflict in West Ukrainian territory during World War II is one of the sharpest problems in the historical heritage of the two neighboring peoples. The part of historians estimates the consequences of it as the «ethnic cleaning» against the Poles have realized by the Ukrainian nationalists, and another ones – as the «genocide» did by the Ukrainian population in consequence of the Polish government and Underground policy. The article presents the attempt to trace the Ukrainian-Polish relations in the West Ukrainian territory through the World War II in the lightning of its retrospective and on the base of the wide international background. The author considers that during the «great» war there was a «small» and unknown war between Ukrainians and Poles in Volhynia and East Galicia took a place. It was a struggle between the Ukrainian and the Polish national liberation movements for the postwar fate of these territories. The Ukrainian national liberation movement, leaded by Ukrainian radical nationalists from OUN and UPA, tries to obtain the Ukrainian independent state might be arise, then the soviet regime and Polish rule couldn’t be established. The Ukrainian nationalists, leans on the Ukrainian population’s support, didn’t stop before the all radical means have used, including the power methods against the civil polish population. The Polish ruling circles and the Underground aspired to return the Volhynia and the East Galicia into the Polish state by all possible means, ignored the Ukrainian’s desire to independence and used the arms’ forces against them. Through the «small» war, the apogee of which was in 1943–1944, many civil Ukrainians and Poles were killed. The responsibility for that development of the relations and its consequences lays on the leaders of the Ukrainian and Polish liberation movements, who didn’t desire and might to reach the compromise in the conditions of threat for both peoples from the German Nazi and soviet totalitarian regimes.

In the article the question of forming of the system of occupation power is examined on Volhynia in the years of the Second World War, facilities of its realization, reason of appearance of resistance movement are determined to the nazis.
