Wireless control of modular multilevel converter (MMC) submodules can benefit from different points of view, such as lower converter cost and shorter installation time. In return for the advantages, the stochastic performance of wireless communication networks necessitates an advanced converter control system immune to the losses and delays of the wirelessly transmitted data. This article proposes an advancement to the distributed control of MMCs to be utilized in wireless submodule control. Using the proposed method, the operation of the MMC continues smoothly and uninterruptedly during wireless communication errors. The previously proposed submodule wireless control concept relies on implementing the modulation and individual submodule-capacitor-voltage control in the submodules using the insertion indices transmitted from a central controller. This article takes the concept as a basis and introduces to synthesize the indices autonomously in the submodules during the communication errors. This new approach allows the MMC continue its operation when one, some, or all submodules suffer from communication errors for a limited time. DC grid has become an important application in power transmission. However, the exist works only have the method to obtain the droop coefficient in a radial topology. Also, this droop coefficient is for V-I droop control. There is no such like method to obtain the droop coefficient for the P-V droop control. This paper proposed a new method for a complex dc grid to obtain the droop coefficients. Firstly, based on the converter control strategies, the types of converter were classified. It will help to find out which kinds of converter can be participated into the dc-side voltage control. Secondly, a virtual node was defined, and the matrix of the dc grid was reshaped to fit the new added virtual node by using the proposed simplification method. An example was shown how this method worked. After that a new method of calculating the P-V droop coefficient was proposed. Finally, a simulation model was investigated to verify if the proposed method can operate in a real system. The results showed that the simplification method can ensure the mathematical relationships of the dc system. And simulations show good performances of the droop coefficient calculation method. Wireless control of modular multilevel converter (MMC) submodules offers several potential benefits to exploit, such as decreased converter costs and ease in converter installation. However, wireless control comes with several challenging engineering requirements. The control methods used with wired communication networks are not directly applicable to the wireless control due to the latency and reliability differences of wired and wireless networks. This article reviews the existing control architectures of MMCs and proposes a control and communication method for wireless submodule control. Also, a synchronization method for pulsewidth modulation carriers is proposed suitable for wireless control. The imperfections of wireless communication, such as higher latency and packet losses compared to wired communication, are analyzed for the operation of MMCs. The latency is fixed with a proper controller and wireless network design. The converter is rendered immune to the packet losses by decreasing the closed-loop control bandwidth. The functionality of the proposal is verified, for the first time, experimentally on a laboratory-scale MMC using a simple wireless network. The feasibility of future multiterminal dc (MTDC) systems depends largely on the capability to withstand dc-side faults. Simulation models of MTDC systems play a very important role in investigating these faults. For such studies, the test system needs to be accurate and computationally efficient. This paper proposes a detailed equivalent model of the modular multilevel converter (MMC), which is used to develop the MTDC test system. The proposed model is capable of representing the blocked-mode operation of the MMC, and can be used to study the balancing control of the capacitor voltages. In addition, the operation of the MMC when redundant submodules are included in the arms can also be studied. A simplified model of a hybrid high-voltage dc breaker is also developed. Hence, the developed test system is capable of accurately describing the behavior of the MMC-based MTDC system employing hybrid HVDC breakers, during fault conditions. Using time-domain simulations, permanent dc-side faults are studied in the MTDC system. Variable-speed drives have reduced voltage requirements when operating below the base speed. In a modular-multilevel-converter-based (M2C-based) motor drive, it is then possible to operate with reduced voltage in the submodule capacitors, than at the base speed. In this sense, a greater capacitor-voltage ripple can be accommodated, without exceeding the maximum peak-capacitor voltage. This paper presents an analytical investigation for the optimal selection of the average capacitor voltage for M2Cs, when the motor is operating with rated torque, below the base speed. This method does not require any power exchange between the converter arms, so it keeps the conduction losses at the minimum level. Additionally, the method decreases the switching losses, due to the decreased capacitor-voltage level. The overall ratings of the converter remain the same as in the base-speed operation. It is shown that this method can be applied at a speed range between the base speed and down to approximately one third of it, i.e., an operating range that covers the requirements for typical pump- and fan-type applications. The balancing of the capacitor voltages in modular multilevel converters becomes increasingly difficult when the switching frequency is reduced. Typically, a reduced switching frequency will increase the spread in the capacitor voltages and, thus, the voltage ripple in the individual submodules. This paper presents a capacitor voltage balancing strategy which aims to combine a low switching frequency with a low capacitor-voltage ripple. This is done by a predictive algorithm that controls the converter in such a way that the stored charge in the submodule capacitors is evenly distributed among all the submodules when the capacitor voltages reach their maximum values. In this way, it is possible to limit the peak voltages in the submodule capacitors at switching frequencies as low as 2-3 times the fundamental switching frequency. The proposed capacitor voltage balancing strategy is validated by both simulations and experimental results with 130-Hz and 140-Hz switching frequency. In the simulations, the capacitor voltage ripple was reduced by 24% compared to the case when a conventional sorting algorithm is used, and the experimental results show that it is possible to combine the proposed voltage balancing strategy with a circulating-current controller. Modular multilevel converters (M2Cs) are increasingly used in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. The efficiency of M2Cs is influenced by the modulation and cell selecting methods, which determines the switching frequency and capacitor voltage ripple in the converter station. A new approach to modulation of the M2C is presented in this paper. Tolerance band methods are employed to obtain the switching instants, and also cell selection. The proposed methods overcome the modulation problem for converters with few cells on one hand and also reduce the sorting efforts for cell balancing purposes of many cells converter on the other hand. Three different algorithms are also proposed to balance the cell capacitor voltages. The evaluation is done in time-domain simulation by which the performance of each method is studied in both the steady-state and transient cases. It is observed that using tolerance band methods not only reduces the switching frequency but also allows for handling severe fault cases in a grid-connected system. Eventually, the most promising tolerance band method has been implemented and verified in a real-time digital simulator, RTDS®. In this paper, previously developed stability results for open-loop sum-capacitor-voltage control of modular multilevel converters are extended. To give improved damping, circulating-current feedback is included in the control law. With the output-current control loop and a first-order measurement lag taken into account, global asymptotic stability is proven. Modular multilevel converters are shown to have a great potential in the area of medium-voltage drives. Low-distortion output quantities combined with low average switching frequencies for the semiconductor devices create an ideal combination for very high-efficiency drives. However, the large number of devices and capacitors that have to conduct the fundamental-frequency current require more complex converter control techniques than its two-level counterpart. Special care needs to be taken for starting and operation at low speeds, where the low-frequency current may cause significant unbalance between the submodule capacitor voltages and disturb the output waveforms. In this paper, principles for converter operation with high torque in the whole speed range are investigated. Modular multilevel converters require that the controller is designed so that the submodule capacitor voltages are equalized and stable, independent of the loading conditions. Assuming that the individual capacitor-voltage sharing is managed effectively, an open-loop strategy has been designed to ensure that the total amount of energy stored inside the converter always will be controlled. This strategy, using the steady-state solutions of the dynamic equations for controlling the total stored energy in each converter arm, has proven to be effective. The intention of this paper is to explain in a rigorous way the mechanism behind the suggested strategy and to prove that, when this open-loop strategy is used, the system becomes globally asymptotically stable. The modular multilevel converter is a promising topology for high-voltage and high-power applications. By using submodules equipped with dc-capacitors excellent output voltage waveforms can be obtained at low switching frequencies. The rated energy storage of the submodule capacitors is a driving factor of the size, cost, and weight of the submodules. Although the modular multilevel converter has been thoroughly investigated in the literature, a more detailed analysis of the energy-storage requirements will provide an important contribution for dimensioning and analysis of modular multilevel converters. Such an analysis is presented in this paper. The analysis relates the power transfer capability to the stored energy in the converter and the findings are validated by both simulations and experimental results. The required size of the submodule capacitors in a 4.5 MW grid-connected converter is first calculated and the calculated operating range is then compared with simulation results. The experimental results show that if the average capacitor voltage is allowed to increase 10% above the nominal value an energy storage to power transfer ratio of 21 J/kW can be achieved. It is concluded that the presented theory can relate the power transfer capability to the energy storage in the converter and is thus a valuable tool in the design and analysis of modular multilevel converters. Theory for the dynamics of modular multilevel converters is developed in this paper. It is shown that the sum capacitor voltage in each arm often can be considered instead of the individual capacitor voltages, thereby significantly reducing the complexity of the system model. Two selections of the so-called insertion indices, which both compensate for the sum-capacitor-voltage ripples, are considered. The dynamic systems which respectively result from these selections are analyzed. An effective dc-bus model, which takes into account the contribution from the submodule capacitors, is obtained. This paper introduces a new method for the preliminary design of power controllers (PCs) in the electric power grid. The method, which is denoted the ideal phase-shifter (IPS) method, utilizes the concept of the power controller plane where the active power of the PC line is plotted versus the difference in voltage angle between the PC terminals. The power controller plane makes it possible to graphically visualize the working area of a PC in a power grid and thus determine the grid situations which are dimensioning for the PC. The IPS method offers the possibility of plotting the grid characteristics in the power controller plane which are unbiased with respect to the reactive properties of the PC. This makes the method suitable for comparison and preliminary design of PCs of different types and with different characteristics by simple geometrical considerations. In this process, the IPS method uses the power-flow control method for deriving the PC characteristics. The internal control of a modular multilevel converter aims to equalize and stabilize the submodule capacitor voltages independent of the loading conditions. It has been shown that a submodule selection mechanism, included in the modulator, can provide voltage sharing inside the converter arm. Several procedures for controlling the total stored energy in each converter arm exist. A new approach is described in this paper. It is based on estimation of the stored energy in the arms by combining the converter electromotive force reference, the measured alternating output current, and the known direct voltage. In this paper, the stability limitations are analyzed for a voltage-source converter (VSC) based high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) link using power-synchronization control for two feasible operation modes: alternating-voltage control and reactive-power control. As a comparison, the analysis has been done by the phasor approach and the space-vector approach. While the phasor approach is straightforward to apply and gives intuitive analytical results, the space-vector approach reflects more dynamic insights of the system. This is achieved by using a unified dynamic modeling of both the ac system and the VSC by means of a new introduced modeling approach Jacobian transfer matrices. This approach shows that non-minimum-phase phenomena due to competing effects between alternating voltages and currents following phase-angle changes impose a fundamental limitation on the achievable bandwidth of the VSC-HVDC link. At moderate voltage levels, a VSC-HVDC link operating in alternating-voltage control mode is able to achieve higher bandwidth than in reactive-power control mode since the right-half plane (RHP) zero is located further from the origin in the former mode. The recently proposed power-synchronization control for grid-connected voltage-source converters (VSCs) has been shown to be a feasible solution for high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission connected to high-impedance weak ac systems. In this paper, power-synchronization control is investigated for VSC-HVDC links connected to another type of weak ac system, i.e., low-inertia or island systems. As an example, a linear model of a typical island system feeding by a VSC-HVDC link, including a synchronous generator, an induction motor, and some passive loads, is developed for tuning the control parameters of the VSC-HVDC link. Time simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC demonstrate that VSC-HVDC systems using power-synchronization control are flexible for various network conditions, such as large-ac-system connection, island systems, or passive networks. The time simulations also show that power-synchronization control can seamlessly handle transitions between operation modes, as well as ride through ac-system faults in all network conditions. In this paper, voltage-source converter (VSC) based high-voltage dc (HVDC) transmission is investigated for interconnection of two very weak ac systems. By using the recently proposed power-synchronization control, the short-circuit capacities of the ac systems are no longer the limiting factors, but rather the load angles. For the analysis of the stability, the Jacobian transfer matrix concept has been introduced. The right-half plane (RHP) transmission zero of the ac Jacobian transfer matrix moves closer to the origin with larger load angles. The paper shows that, due to the bandwidth limitation imposed by the RHP zero on the direct-voltage control of the VSC, high dc-capacitance values are needed for such applications. In addition, the paper proposes a control structure particularly designed for weak-ac-system interconnections. As an example, it is shown that the proposed control structure enables a power transmission of 0.86 p.u. from a system with the short-circuit ratio (SCR) of 1.2 to a system with an SCR of 1.0. This should be compared to previous results for VSC based HVDC using vector current control.
