In some applications of microgrids and distributed generation, it is necessary to feed islanded or stand-alone loads with high-quality voltage to provide low total harmonic distortion (THD). To fulfil these demands, an L C filter is usuallyconnected to the output terminals of power electronics converters. A cascaded voltage and current control loop with pulse-width modulation schemes are used to regulate the voltages and currents in these systems. However, these strategies have some drawbacks, particularly when multiple-input–multiple-output plants (MIMO) are controlled using single-input–single-output (SISO) design methods. This methodology usually produces a sluggish transient response and cross–coupling between different control loops and state variables. In this paper, a model predictive control (MPC) strategy based on the concept of optimal switching sequences (OSS) is designed to control voltage and current in an L C filter connected to a three-level neutral-point clamped converter. The strategy solves an optimisation problem to achieve control of the L C filter variables, i.e., currents and output voltages. Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) results are obtained to validate the feasibility of the proposed strategy, using a PLECS–RT HIL platform and a dSPACE Microlab Box controller. In addition to the good dynamic performance of the proposed OSS–MPC, it is demonstrated using HIL results that the control algorithm is capable of obtaining low total harmonic distortion (THD) in the output voltage for different operating conditions. In this paper, a fixed-switching-frequency modulated model predictive control (M 2 PC) is established for a two-level three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) working in an islanded AC microgrid. These small-scale power systems are composed by two or more VSIs which interface DGs, controlling the voltage amplitude and frequency in the system, and simultaneously sharing the load active and reactive power. Generally, these operational characteristics are achieved using hierarchical linear control loops, but with challenging limitations such as slow transient reaction to disturbances and high proneness to be affected by parameter modifications. Model predictive control may solve these issues. Nevertheless, the most used and developed predictive control scheme, the finite-set model predictive control (FS-MPC), presents the drawback of having the harmonic spectrum spread over all the frequencies. This brings issues with coupling between the different hierarchical control levels of the whole microgrid system, and eventually, when designing the filters for main-grid connection. This paper aims to solve these issues by developing the fixed-switching-frequency M 2 PC working with higher-level control loops for operation in an islanded AC microgrid. These advantages are proved in an AC microgrid configuration where methodology for paralleling multiple M 2 PC-regulated VSIs is described, with rapid transient response, inherent stability, and fully decentralised operation of individual VSIs, achieving proper load power sharing, eliminating circular currents, and proper waveforms for output currents and capacitor voltages. This paper presents a new control strategy using model-based predictive current control (MB-PCC) for a doubly fed induction machine (DFIM) driven by an indirect matrix converter (IMC). This strategy proposes the control of rotor currents, whose references are calculated from active and reactive stator power set points and the dynamic model of the DFIM. The control strategy works well in the four P-Q operating regions of the DFIM. The grid synchronization process is carried out by setting the P-Q power set points to zero. The results include the DFIM synchronization procedure as well as the active and reactive power control at variable shaft speed to validate the feasibility of the proposed strategy. Model predictive control (MPC) has emerged as a real alternative for the control of different topologies of power converters. In particular, MPC has been successfully applied in matrix converters, significantly reducing the difficulty of control compared with classical techniques. In this study, a predictive voltage control strategy for a four-leg indirect matrix converter is proposed. The idea is based on the discrete minimisation of a cost function in order to select the best vector state of the power converter to be applied in the next sampling instant. In a conventional finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) formulation, active and reactive power control loops rely on the predictive controller, whereas the dc-bus voltage is usually governed by a PI-based control loop. This originates from fact that the dynamic equations for describing the predictions of these variables are heavily coupled. In this paper, a cascade-free FCS-MPC for single-phase grid-connected power converters is presented. The proposed control algorithm is formulated in terms of established dynamic references design, which was originally proposed to directly govern active and reactive power, and dc-voltage in three-phase power converters. In this paper, the dynamic reference design concept is extended to control single-phase grid-connected power converters. The proposed control algorithm does not use instantaneous ac-power calculations; instead, it directly formulates the optimal control problem on the grid-current in the original stationary reference frame. The experimental results obtained with a single-phase grid-connected neutral point clamped (NPC) converter confirm a successful design, where system constraints, e.g., maximum power and weighted switching frequency, are easily taken into account. The interest on weak and micro-grid systems has grown up substantially last time, specially tied up to distributed power generation systems (DPGSs), isolated systems as aircraft, or islanding power systems. These kinds of grids are usually under significant variation in their quantities, specifically in their voltage amplitude and/or frequency. On this line, many studies about synchronization methods have been developed, which may work under variations on the frequency value, unbalanced voltage, and even with harmonic distortion. However, power converters connected to this class of systems are poorly documented—specifically controlled rectifiers. In fact, most of the controlled grid connected converters (GCCs) are defined to work in a fixed frequency and balanced system. This paper deals with a GCC connected to a variable-frequency and unbalanced voltage supply system control through a predictive algorithm with a fixed resolution sampling strategy. Furthermore, the current references are imposed in order to help the weak-grid source subjected to unbalancing, taking more power from the phase with highest voltage amplitude and relaxing the other phases. This issue makes to calculate every phase current reference independently and accordingly the voltage amplitudes keep the dc-link voltage in a desired value. This study proposes a generalised approach based on model predictive strategy for the current control, dc-link capacitor voltages balancing, switching frequency reduction and common-mode voltage mitigation in multilevel diodeclamped converters. A generalised discrete-time model of the converters is presented, where all the control objectives are formulated in terms of the switching states. The control goals are expressed as a cost function, and with the help of suitable weighting factors these goals are met simultaneously. The cost function minimisation is used as criteria for choosing the best switching state which would be applied to the converter during next sampling interval. The real-time digital control issues such as computational burden and delay compensation are also discussed. A single-objective predictive control method that deals with four main control objectives applied to a multivariable single-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped converter operating as an active power filter is proposed in this paper. The four control objectives are to self-support the dc-bus voltage under load variations, to compensate the reactive power and the current harmonics, and to balance the dc capacitor voltages by using a predefined combination of the redundant switching states of the converter. The main contribution of the proposed method is that these objectives are accomplished without using weighting factors in the cost function, which eliminates problems such as multiobjective optimization or additional empirical procedures for determination of these factors. As a result, the method is easy to implement and rapidly selects the optimal voltage to improve the dynamic-state performance. Experimental results from a 2-kVA prototype are presented to prove that the method is valid for single-phase compensation. The well-known effect of model parameter errors' issue, which is inherent in predictive control methods, is also tested to confirm that the harmonic distortion in the grid current is below 5% even when the predictive model has a 25% error between actual and theoretically estimated grid impedance values. This paper presents a finite control set model predictive strategy and its application to the load voltage control of two-level four-leg inverters. The proposed approach uses the novel discrete-time model of the inverter and output $LC$ filter in order to predict the variables to be controlled. These predictions are carried out for the 16 switching states of the inverter and are evaluated using a cost function. The switching state that forces the load voltages to be closest to their respective references is chosen and applied to the inverter. The behavior of the predictive controller has been investigated, and the changes to both inductive and capacitive filter parameters have been considered. In order to improve the reliability of the fourth leg as well as the overall inverter efficiency, a solution is proposed, which combines hardware and software reconfigurations. An active power filter implemented with a four-leg voltage-source inverter using a predictive control scheme is presented. The use of a four-leg voltage-source inverter allows the compensation of current harmonic components, as well as unbalanced current generated by single-phase nonlinear loads. A detailed yet simple mathematical model of the active power filter, including the effect of the equivalent power system impedance, is derived and used to design the predictive control algorithm. The compensation performance of the proposed active power filter and the associated control scheme under steady state and transient operating conditions is demonstrated through simulations and experimental results. This paper presents a review of the most popular control and modulation strategies studied for matrix converters (MCs) in the last decade. The purpose of most of these methods is to generate sinusoidal current on the input and output sides. These methods are compared considering theoretical complexity and performance. The papers in this special section focus on predictive control in power converters and electrical drives. With the fast microcontrollers available today, applications of predictive control in power converters and electrical drives are a very powerful and attractive alternative to classical controllers. The use of predictive control offers a number of advantages: very intuitive approach, no need for linear controllers and modulators, easy inclusion of nonlinearities and restrictions, etc. However, predictive control schemes in power converters and electrical drives have not yet been implemented in industrial applications. Nevertheless, after some further progress, it can be expected that the advantages of predictive algorithms will lead to an increased number of industrial applications in the future. This paper deals with the design, control, and implementation of a three-phase ac–ac mobile utility power supply using a matrix converter for airplane servicing applications. Using a matrix converter as a compact direct ac-to-ac converter can provide savings in terms of the size and cost of a mobile power supply compared to common back-to-back converters. Furthermore, using the proposed direct matrix converter eliminates the need for bulky electrolytic capacitors and increases the system's reliability and lifetime. A finite control set model predictive control is used to generate a high-quality 115 V/400 Hz output voltage and a low-harmonic-distortion source current with a unity input power factor for various load conditions, including balanced, unbalanced, linear, and nonlinear loads. The predictive strategy is used to control the output voltage and source current for each possible switching state in order to simultaneously track the references. To achieve a further reduction in the system's size and cost, an active damping strategy is used to compensate for the instability caused by the input filter in contrast to the passive method. The operation of single-phase Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is analyzed in the paper. A mathematical model of the converter is developed and described, based on which the structure and selection of parameters for Classical Control and Optimal Switching State Model Predictive Control (OSS-MPC) are defined. Additionally, the procedure for the determination of circuit parameters, such as submodule capacitance and arm inductance, is described and carried out. The listed control methods are designed and evaluated in Virtual Hardware-in-the-Loop together with single-phase MMC power circuit, regarding three control objectives: AC current control, voltage balancing control and circulating current control. Control methods are evaluated for both steady-state and transient performance and compared based on nine criteria: AC current reference tracking, THD of AC current and voltage, submodule capacitor voltage balancing, total submodule voltage control, circulating current magnitude and THD, number of control parameters and computational complexity. This is the first time that a fair comparison between Classical Control and MPC is considered in literature, resulting in superior performance of both control methods regarding four different criteria and the same performance regarding AC current reference tracking.
