This article presents a dynamic model and a current-mode control for a dc–dc modular multilevel converter with the ultimate aim of expanding the converter to a three-leg configuration to reduce the filtering requirements of the dc ports. A complete model of the converter including a systematic approach for the control of the power throughput is developed. It is then shown that the expansion from a single-leg to three-leg configuration requires no additional modeling, and that the three-leg converter significantly alleviates the filtering requirements on both the high-voltage and low-voltage sides. The proposed model and control technique are verified using simulation results based on the MATLAB / Simulink software environment for both the single and three-leg configuration. The dynamic performance of a microgrid is governed by the decentralized primary control strategy that is embedded in each of its hosted Distributed Energy Resource (DER) units. The primary control computes the voltage synthesized by the interfacing voltage-sourced converter such that the DER unit contributes active and reactive powers in support of the microgrid voltage amplitude and frequency. These operational requirements must be satisfied with respect to the converter safety and physical limitations, such as the limited magnitude of the converter output current and terminal voltage. In this paper, all the control requirements mentioned above are taken into account in a single constrained optimization problem using the framework of Model-based Predictive Control (MPC). Solving the primary control problem in this way allows the microgrid to respond to major disturbances such short-circuit faults and transitions between modes of operation, while the electronically-interfaced DER units operate within operational and safety limits. This paper proposes a state feedback primary control strategy for microgrids with multiple distributed energy resource units, improving their transient behavior in both islanded and grid-connected modes of operation. To that end, the interaction of each distributed energy resource unit within the microgrid is modeled as a lumped dynamic system, which results to be nonlinear and multivariable. For the closed-loop control of such multivariable systems, the full state feedback formulation is preferred which requires a suitable state observer. For the design of the observer and feedback gains, the solution of the linear-quadratic estimation and regulation problems is considered. For simplicity, an approximate linear model at a representative operating point is derived. The linear quadratic Gaussian/loop-transfer recovery is adopted as the design procedure to optimize the trajectory of the state variables subject to a desirable actuation effort, in this case of the voltage amplitude and frequency, yielding a solution that is robust to model uncertainties. The effectiveness of the strategy is assessed through time-domain simulation on the CIGRE benchmark medium-voltage distribution network with three distributed energy resource units. The dc–dc modular multilevel converter (MMC), derived from the ac–dc MMC, is an attractive converter topology for interconnection of medium-/high-voltage dc grids. The dc–dc MMC generates an ac voltage component in each arm to drive an ac circulating current for maintaining the energy balance of its submodule capacitors. The power transfer capability of the dc–dc MMC and the amplitude of the ac circulating current are closely coupled with the available arm ac voltage headroom. As the voltage conversion ratio of the dc–dc MMC deviates from 0.5, the power transfer capability of the converter diminishes. This paper proposes an enhanced closed-loop control strategy, which increases the power transfer capability and at the same time reduces the ac circulating current of the dc–dc MMC. Performance and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy are demonstrated by simulation studies in the MATLAB/Simulink as well as experiments conducted on a laboratory prototype. This paper proposes a current-controlled voltage-mode control scheme for dispatchable electronically coupled distributed energy resource (DER) units based on sliding-mode control (SMC) strategy. The proposed control strategy provides fast and stable control on the terminal voltage and frequency of DER unit and ensures protection of the power-electronic interface to external faults. In addition it maintains the quality of the output voltage of the host DER unit in spite of unbalanced and/or distorted load currents. Performance of the proposed SMC strategy is demonstrated through time-domain simulation of a single islanded DER unit, starting from black-start and subjected to various operating scenarios, and it is compared to the performance of a proportional-integral (PI) based control strategy. Also a current-mode control strategy is proposed for DER units based on SMC. An analytical steady-state model of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) can be used for component sizing and assessment of the impact of different parameters on the MMC performance. Thus, this paper proposes an enhanced steady-state model for the MMC, which enables one to calculate the amplitudes of the harmonic components of MMC arm currents, submodule capacitor voltages, and arm voltages. In addition, the proposed model allows for the calculation of the amplitude and phase angle of the modulating signal, and it also presents a criterion for resonance of the arm currents. This is achieved by means of a polynomial function of the modulation index, and through checking the stability criteria established by the proposed model. The capability of formulating the modulating signal enables a more accurate calculation of the steady-state amplitudes of the variables, as compared to the previously published models. This paper also presents an accurate method of submodule capacitor sizing, based on the proposed steady-state model. The proposed method gives the exact value of the submodule capacitance (i.e., the capacitance that results in dc voltage fluctuations within a desired range) for a prespecified submodule capacitor voltage variation and a given circulating current amplitude. The stability criterion given by the proposed steady-state model, used for sizing the arm inductance, and the submodule capacitor voltage variation given by the proposed capacitor sizing method, used for sizing the submodule capacitor, allows for the determining of the operating limits of the MMC in terms of its parameters. Extensive simulation results are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed steady-state model and the capacitor sizing method. This paper proposes a voltage control strategy for islanded operation of dispatchable electronically coupled distributed energy resource (DER) systems, for remote (off grid) electrification systems. The proposed control strategy is based on fractional-order sliding-mode control, offers black-start functionality, maintains the quality of the output voltage of the host DER system in spite of unbalanced and/or distorted load currents, and ensures protection of the power-electronic interface to external faults. Moreover, the fractional derivative order of the controller can be used as an additional tuning parameter. Widespread penetration of distributed generators (DGs) into the power system has aggravated the problem of temporary overvoltages (TOVs), which can inflict substantial damages on the DGs, equipment, and other customers. Through slight modifications to the power-electronic circuit and its control, this paper proposes a strategy for limiting the TOVs caused by single-stage grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) energy systems. This paper also proposes a reduced TOV mitigation strategy for applications where a somewhat less effective, but also less expensive, solution is acceptable. This paper proposes a transformerless dc–dc converter, which features a large voltage ratio, for medium-voltage dc (MVDC) applications. The proposed converter combines a boost converter with a series-parallel resonant converter which enables soft switching of the power switches and diodes. Further, the power switches and diodes of the proposed converter experience lower voltage stresses compared to the other topologies. The proposed converter is modular and, therefore, permits series and/or parallel connection of multiple units for the desired voltage and/or power ratings. This paper discusses the principles of operation, analysis, and design of the proposed converter. The ever-increasing penetration of wind power into the electric power systems indicates the need that wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) should be able to regulate their output real power, since their participation in power-flow control is expected to be essential for power systems stability. On the other hand, the tendency to build larger WECSs at competitive costs encourages lighter and, consequently, more flexible drive-trains. However, a softer drive-train may give rise to undamped drive-train oscillations when the WECS exercises output power regulation. This paper proposes an enhanced control strategy that enables a direct-drive WECS based on the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to damp its drive-train torsional mode, even if the output real power of the WECS is regulated. A procedure is presented for tuning of the proposed control to ensure the internal stability of the WECS, considering the impacts of the proposed control on the dynamic performance of the host WECS. This paper proposes a control strategy to enhance transient performance and stability of a droop-controlled active distribution network. The dependency of dynamics on the droop gains, steady-state power flow, and network/load is studied in a droop-controlled distributed energy resource (DER) unit. These dependencies result in poor transient performance or even instability of the network in the event of a disturbance in the system. To eliminate these dependencies, a gain-scheduled decoupling control strategy is proposed which reshapes the characteristics of conventional droop by means of supplementary control signals; these control signals are based on local power measurements and supplement the d- and q-axis voltage reference of each DER unit. The impact of the proposed control on the DER and network dynamics is studied by calculating the eigenvalues of a test active distribution system assuming proposed control. The proposed control is shown to stabilize the system for a range of operating conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed control is further demonstrated through simulations carried out in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment, on the active distribution system under study. This paper proposes an adaptive feedforward compensation that alters the dynamic coupling between a distributed-resource unit and the host microgrid, so that the robustness of the system stability to droop coefficients and network dynamic uncertainties is enhanced. The proposed feedforward strategy preserves the steady-state effect that the conventional droop mechanism exhibits and, therefore, does not compromise the steady-state power sharing regime of the microgrid or the voltage/frequency regulation. The feedforward compensation is adaptive as it is modified periodically according to the system steady-state operating point which, in turn, is estimated through an online recursive least-square estimation technique. This paper presents a discrete-time mathematical model and analytical framework for the proposed feedforward compensation. This paper proposes a single-stage three-phase photovoltaic (PV) system that features enhanced maximum power point tracking capability, and an improved energy yield under partial shading conditions. Further, the proposed PV system can effectively double the maximum permissible dc voltage of a grounded conventional single-stage PV system, with no need for insulators, fuses, disconnects, and switchgear of a higher voltage class, with respect to safety/insulation standards or common system integration practices exercised for conventional grounded single-stage PV systems. The proposed PV system is realized through the parallel connection of an auxiliary half-bridge converter to the dc link of a conventional single-stage PV system and, therefore, is also an option for retrofit applications. This paper proposes a control strategy for the autonomous (islanded) operation of a four-wire, electronically-coupled distributed generation (DG) unit which can feed a highly unbalanced load, e.g., due to the presence of single-phase loads. In the grid-connected mode, the power-electronic interface of the DG unit enables the exchange of real and reactive power with the distribution network, based on the conventional dq-frame current control strategy. The current control scheme is disabled subsequent to the detection of an islanding event, and the proposed controller is activated. The proposed control strategy utilizes: i) an internal oscillator to maintain the island frequency and ii) a feedback control system to regulate the island voltage. The proposed control strategy provides a set of balanced three-phase voltages for the load, despite the load imbalance and parameters uncertainties. The proposed control strategy also guarantees robust stability, fast dynamic response to disturbances, and zero steady-state error. A stability analysis is also carried out to determine the robust stability margin of the closed-loop islanded system. Effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is evaluated based on time-domain simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment and verified based on laboratory experiments. A comprehensive dynamic model of the three-level Neutral Point Diode Clamped (NPC) converter, based on the generalized state-space averaging method, is presented. The developed model mathematically describes (i) the reason for and (ii) the impacts of the system parameter tolerances on the drift/imbalance of the DC-side capacitor voltages. Then, based on the developed model (i) a novel controller to prevent DC capacitor voltage drift/imbalance and (ii) a decoupled current controller in the dq-frame are designed. The paper also presents a feed-forward control to eliminate the coupling between the voltage balancer and the current controller. The accuracy of developed NPC converter model and the effectiveness of the proposed controls are verified by time-domain simulations of a study system in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment.
