The need for agile and proper identification of drugs of abuse has encouraged the scientific community to improve and todevelop new methodologies. The drug lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is still widely used due to its hallucinogenic effects. The use ofvoltammetric methods to analyze narcotics has increased in recent years, and the possibility of miniaturizing the electrochemical equipmentallows these methods to be applied outside the laboratory; for example, in crime scenes. In addition to portability, the search for affordable andsustainable materials for use in electroanalytical research has grown in recent decades. In this context, employing paper substrate, graphite pen-cil, and silver paint to construct paper-based electrodes is a great alternative. Here, a paper-based device comprising three electrodes was drawnon 300 g/m2watercolor paper with 8B pencils, and its efficiency was compared to the efficiency of a commercially available screen-printedcarbon electrode. Square wave voltammetry was used for LSD analysis in aqueous medium containing 0.05 mol/L LiClO4. The limits of detec-tion and quantification were 0.38 and 1.27 mol/L, respectively. Both electrodes exhibited a similar voltammetric response, which was alsoconfirmed during analysis of a seized LSD sample, with recovery of less than 10%. The seized samples were previously analyzed by GCMStechnique, employing the full scan spectra against the software spectral library. The electrode selectivity was also tested against 3,4-methylene-dioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and methamphetamine. Developing a cost-effective and simple micro-analysis tool has long been an important objective in the toxicological detection of fluorene. In this study, a disposable paper-based micro-analysis device (μ-PAD) was designed using graphite doped with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to hand draw the electrode (MWCNTs/μ-PAD). We investigated the feasibility of the designed MWCNTs/μ-PAD as a cell-sensing platform using voltammetry measurements. Its application for evaluating the cytotoxicity of fluorene was studied based on the electrochemical determination of human breast cancer cells induced by fluorene. The results showed a dose-dependent toxicity effect of fluorene on cellular activity. The measurements were comparable with those obtained using a methyl-thiazolyl-tetrazolium assay. The detection limit of the MWCNTs/μ-PAD for human breast cancer cells was as low as 4.00 × 103 cells·mL−1 owing to the enhanced catalytic activity of the MWCNTs. Notably, the MWCNTs/μ-PAD—which had a diameter of 7.00 mm—allowed a sampling volume of 10.0 μL, which is 50.0 times less than the sampling volume required with a conventional electrode (500 μL). Advantages such as the simplicity of manufacture, low consumption, low cost, rapid detection, and disposability, suggest that the MWCNTs/μ-PAD could provide new opportunities and directions for in vitro microanalysis.

We report the development of an electrochemical paper-based analytical device (ePAD) for the selective determination of dopamine (DA) in model serum sample. The ePAD device consists of three layers. In the top layer, SU-8 photoresist defines a hydrophilic sample application spot on the filter paper. The middle layer was made from transparency film and contained two holes, one for sample preconcentration and the other for the surfactant to allow transfer to the third layer. A screen-printed carbon electrode formed the bottom layer and was used for electrochemical measurements. In the absence of the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the oxidation peaks of DA, ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) overlapped. With the addition of SDS, the DA oxidation peak shifted to more negative values and was clearly distinguishable from AA and UA. The oxidation potential shift was presumably due to preferential electrostatic interactions between the cationic DA and the anionic SDS. Indeed, whilst the SDS-modified paper improved the DA current five-fold, the non-ionic Tween-20 and cationic tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactants had no effect or reduced the current, respectively. Furthermore, only the SDS-modified paper showed the selective shift in oxidation potential for DA. DA determination was carried out using square-wave voltammetry between -0.2 and 0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl, and this ePAD was able to detect DA over a linear range of 1-100 μM with a detection limit (S/N=3) of 0.37 μM. The ePAD seems suitable as a low cost, easy-to-use, portable device for the selective quantitation of DA in human serum samples.

Paper surfaces (Whatman filter papers, Kimwipes®, and Japanese Washi papers) were employed as support for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) deposited by the seed-mediated growth method. The AuNP-modified paper or textile was brought into “weak” (or non-permanent) contact with a glassy carbon electrode and immersed into aqueous electrolyte media. Electrochemical responses for the Fe(CN)64−/Fe(CN)63− redox system in 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) and 1.0 M KCl solutions were investigated by voltammetry and impedance methods. Even for weakly contacted AuNP catalysts of relatively low density faster electron transfer was observed. Particle sizes of at least 20 nm diameter were required. There was no permanent contact from AuNP catalysts to the electrode and the process was therefore termed “weak contact catalysis”. The method is proposed as a rapid and novel catalyst screening tool with potential applications in fuel cell and sensor technologies. Bacteria able to transfer electrons to conductive surfaces are of interest as catalysts in microbial fuel cells, as well as in bioprocessing, bioremediation, and corrosion. New procedures for immobilization of Geobacter sulfurreducens on graphite electrodes are described that allow routine, repeatable electrochemical analysis of cell-electrode interactions. Immediately after immobilizing G. sulfurreducens on electrodes, electrical current was obtained without addition of exogenous electron shuttles or electroactive polymers. Voltammetry and impedance analysis of pectin-immobilized bacteria transferring electrons to electrode surfaces could also be performed. Cyclic voltammetry of immobilized cells revealed voltage-dependent catalytic current similar to what is commonly observed with adsorbed enzymes, with catalytic waves centered at -0.15 V (vs. SHE). Electrodes maintained at +0.25 V (vs. SHE) initially produced 0.52 A/m(2) in the presence of acetate as the electron donor. Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy of coatings was also consistent with a catalytic mechanism, controlled by charge transfer rate. When electrodes were maintained at an oxidizing potential for 24 h, electron transfer to electrodes increased to 1.75 A/m(2). These observations of electron transfer by pectin-entrapped G. sulfurreducens appear to reflect native mechanisms used for respiration. The ability of washed G. sulfurreducens cells to immediately produce electrical current was consistent with the external surface of this bacterium possessing a pathway linking oxidative metabolism to extracellular electron transfer. This electrochemical activity of pectin-immobilized bacteria illustrates a strategy for preparation of catalytic electrodes and study of Geobacter under defined conditions.

International audience; Microbial bioanodes were formed in pulp and paper effluent on graphite plate electrodes under constant polarization at -0.3 V/SCE, without any addition of nutriment or substrate. The bioanodes were characterized in 3-electrode set-ups, in continuous mode, with hydraulic retention times from 6 to 48 h and inlet COD from 500 to 5200 mg/L. Current densities around 4 A/m2 were obtained and voltammetry curves indicated that 6 A/m2 could be reached at +0.1 V/SCE. A theoretical model was designed, which allowed the effects of HRT and COD to be distinguished in the complex experimental data obtained with concomitant variations of the two parameters. COD removal due to the electrochemical process was proportional to the hydraulic retention time and obeyed a Michaelis-Menten law with respect to the COD of the outlet flow, with a Michaelis constant KCOD of 400 mg/L. An inhibition effect occurred above inlet COD of around 3000 mg/L.
