Purpose. Highlighting the results of the analysis of the stress-deformed state of the wagon body of the 918 model under non-typical loads with bulk cargo. Such an analysis was carried out with the aim of investigating the possibility of transportation of various types of bulk cargo (for example, various types of raw materials, agricultural products, construction materials, etc.) in the existing design of the section of the refrigerated wagon. Methodology. In order to ensure uninterrupted railway transportation in today’s difficult conditions, it is proposed to use scientific and applied approaches to develop the possibility of using existing models of wagons for types of transportation that are not typical for them. Namely, to consider the possibility of using refrigerated wagons for the transportation of bulk cargo. A systematic approach is used to conduct such research. This included: determination of the study of the specifics of the impact of bulk cargo on rolling stock structures; analysis of design and technological documentation to create a spatial 3D model of the wagon under investigation; creation of a calculation model using a modern software complex; checking the adequacy of the developed model and the accuracy of the data obtained with its help; application of non-typical design loads; obtaining and analyzing pictures of stress-strain states by the finite element method. Findings. A 3D model of the body module of the model 918 wagon was developed. The results of the analysis of the equivalent stress plot according to the first mode proved that the greatest stresses are 800 MPa, that is, they significantly exceed the permissible ones. According to the third mode, the highest stresses are 320 MPa and also exceed the permissible ones. The results of the analysis of the plot of equivalent stresses, which occur during expansion, proved that the loads are excessive. The cladding, supported only by racks, cannot hold the load from the bulk cargo. Originality. A strength analysis of the existing design of a refrigerated wagon section was conducted under non-typical bulk cargo loads. Practical value. The obtained results of the analysis of the stressed-deformed state of the body of the model 918 wagon when loaded with bulk cargo made it possible to assess the potential possibilities of such transportation. It is expedient to use such results when carrying out research and development works on the improvement (modernization) of the existing sections of refrigerated wagons to ensure the possibility of transporting bulk cargo in them. Purpose. To substantiate the improvement of the load-bearing element of the wagon-platform for the possibility of transporting bulk cargoes. Methodology. In order to be able to transport bulk cargo on the wagon-platform, it is proposed to install a composite boiler module on it. In order to determine the dynamic load of the improved load-bearing structure of the wagon-platform, mathematical modeling was performed. The mathematical model formed by professor Bohomaz H.I. was used. However, within the framework of the research this model was refined to determine the load of the wagon-platform of the proposed design. The solution of the system of differential equations is carried out in the MathCad software package. To do this, the mathematical model was reduced to the normal Cauchy form, and then integrated by the Runge-Kutta method. The obtained acceleration is taken into account when calculating the strength of the advanced load-bearing structure of the wagon-platform. The calculation is performed in the SolidWorks Simulation software package, which implements the finite element method. Also, within the research the modal analysis of a load-bearing structure of the wagon-platform is carried out. Findings. Based on the calculations, it is established that the acceleration acting on the load-bearing structure of the wagon-platform car is 0.38 g, i.e. it is within acceptable limits. The results of the calculation of the strength of the improved design of the wagon-platform showed that the maximum equivalent stresses occur in the area of interaction of the spine beam frame with the pivot and is about 340 MPa, the maximum displacement made 8.6 mm. That is, the obtained stresses do not exceed the yield strength of the structural material. The results of the modal analysis showed that the values of the natural frequencies of oscillations are within acceptable limits, because the first natural frequency has a value greater than 8 Hz. Originality. The scientific substantiation of improvement of a load-bearing structure of a universal wagon-platform to transportations of bulk cargoes is carried out. Practical value. The conducted research will promote increase in efficiency of operation of railway transport and creation of developments concerning planning of innovative designs of a rolling stock. Purpose. To study the feasibility of using the fi llers for the gondola car bearing structure components. This makes it possible to reduce both damage to the gondola car bearing structure components during operating modes of loading and the cost of unscheduled repairs. In addition, it can improve the effi ciency of railway transport operation. Methodology. In order to substantiate the use of aluminium foam as a fi ller for the gondola car bearing structure components with a closed box-section, a computational modeling of loading under the most unfavorable operating mode, such as shunting collision, has been performed. Gondola car 12-757 model built at PJSC Kryukovsky Railway Car Building Works is chosen as a prototype. The calculation is performed using the fi nite element method implemented in the SolidWorks Simulation (CosmosWorks) software package. The fatigue strength and natural vibration frequencies of the gondola car bearing structure with a fi ller of its components have been calculated. The natural vibration frequencies of the bearing structure of the gondola car are calculated. The design service life of the gondola car bearing structure has been determined. The main indicators of the gondola car bearing structure dynamics have been studied. The calculation is made in a plane coordinate system. In this case, the mathematical model is solved by the Runge-Kutta method. Findings. The results of the conducted research have revealed that the use of aluminium foam as a fi ller for the gondola car bearing structure components contributes to reduction of their load-bearing capacity from 12 to 47 % compared to the prototype wagon. Originality. The expediency of using aluminium foam as a fi ller of the gondola car bearing structure components by modeling its load-bearing capacity under the most unfavorable operating conditions has been scientifi cally substantiated. Practical value. By reducing the loading on the gondola car bearing structure, using aluminium foam as fi ller for its components, it is possible to increase fatigue strength, reduce the amount of damages, and, consequently, the cost of unscheduled repairs of the wagon. The conducted research can contribute to the creation of recommendations for developing the innovative rolling stock designs with improved technical-and-economic, as well as operational performance. The basic part of the rolling stock consists of the freight wagons. However, they are used under heavy conditions (large-tonnage loads, severe atmospheric conditions, aggressive effect of loads, etc.). The load bearing capacity of the wagons should be provided throughout their service life. The main factors affecting the load bearing capacity of wagons are the properties of the corresponding materials and the cross sections shape of the parts. Therefore, the study of fatigue failure of the wagon materials is an important and relevant topic. The paper presents the features and results of the investigated synopsis of the development of the wagon materials fatigue failures. Thus, the work presents: the factors affecting fatigue limit of wagon parts; the impact of the external factors on the wagon parts strength; the influence of stress concentration; the influence of the absolute dimensions of the part cross-section; the effect of part deformation type and the cycle asymmetry; the effect of temperature; the dependence of strength on time; the influence of the service life of the part and the load condition.
