Among different pollutants, organic dyes, phenolic compounds, and antibiotics are three types of hazardous contaminants that have become serious environmental issues. This work deals with the synthesis of new visible-light responsive CsM 0.25 W 1.75 O 6 (M = Ni, Co, Mn, Cu) compounds with a solid-state reaction induced defect pyrochlore structure followed by crushing in a ball mill. The prepared materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement, X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements at low-temperature. The optimized CsNi 0.25 W 1.75 O 6 (CsNiWO-2) compound was tested for its photocatalytic abatement efficient for several contaminants including methylene blue, phenol, as well as levofloxacin and isoniazid antibiotics. The influence of the various key aspects, such as photocatalyst dosage and hydrogen peroxide concentration, on the degradation efficiency of CsNiWO-2 was examined. The degradation efficiency of CsNiWO-2 (0.6 g L−1) towards methylene blue, phenol, levofloxacin, and isoniazid in the presence of H 2 O 2 (0.06 mol L−1) was 81.4, 47.9, 84.6, and 37.4 %, respectively. Thus, the developed material demonstrates promising properties to degrade methylene blue and levofloxacin. Also, the mechanism and comprehensive schemes for the photooxidation of methylene blue and levofloxacin were elucidated over CsNiWO-2. The present research potentially contributes to designing efficient defect pyrochlores for wastewater treatment under visible light irradiation. The extensive application of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) has resulted in its worldwide detection in waters, leading to risks to human health and ecology safety. Presently, various remediation techniques for NNIs have been developed. However, the critical reviews concerning the remediation approaches for the elimination of NNIs from water are limited. Considering tremendous efforts have been made in the research topic of NNIs removal recently, this study systematacially reviewed the current advances on NNIs remediation approaches, including adsorption, Fenton, ozonation, photodegradation, sulfate radicals based-advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), electrochemical AOPs, percarbonate-based AOPs, periodate-based AOPs, microbial remediation, and phytoremediation. Moreover, NNIs removal by these methods have been critically discussed, compared, and analyzed. Furthermore, mechanisms of different treatment processes have been summarized in detail. Finally, the challenges and perspectives have been proposed. This study highlights the current progresses on NNIs removal technologies and proposes the future research needs in this area, which will provide support to further researches to halt the NNIs contamination. Due to enormous quantities with hazards and complexity in nature is a big challenge for effective treatment of wastewater from pharmaceutical processes including herbal extraction through conventional methods of distillation. The situation is further aggravated in countries facing high rising population, urbanization, and industrialization resulting in the generation of industrial wastes. The study has been carried out in the herbal extraction industry by conducting stage-wise sampling of ETP based on the conventional method and further coupled with ozonation as an advanced treatment to comply with regulatory standards. Additionally, the same process was studied that implementing the best available technology (BAT) by providing ETP with advanced technology modules such as MBR (membrane bioreactor) + RO + O3 has not only resulted in compliance with standards but also reuse of treated wastewater into the process and utilities has been proved to be techno-economically a viable and sustainable option. Modifying existing aeration tanks and advanced oxidation through ozone injection post-biological treatment has resulted in COD and BOD reduction of 96.42% and 99.0% respectively. Whereas in the case of MBR + RO + O3, the values of pH, BOD, COD, TSS, and sulfide have been observed as 8.32, 2.0 mg.L-1, 14.0 mg.L-1, 1.0 mg.L-1 and 0.0 mg.L-1 respectively and 98% recovery of treated effluent, thus saving 44 KL.day-1 of freshwater resulting into significant financial benefits of Rupees 12.59 lacs annually, which otherwise was outsourced through tankers. Heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on non-radical reactive species are considered as a powerful technology for wastewater purification due to their long half-lives and high adaptation in a wide pH range. Herein, we fabricate surface Co defect-rich spinel ZnCo2O4 porous nanosheets, which can generate ≡CoIV=O and 1O2 over a wide pH range of 3.81–10.96 by the formation of amphoteric ≡Zn(OH)2 in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show Co defect-rich ZnCo2O4 possesses much stronger adsorption ability and more electron transfer to PMS. Moreover, the adsorption mode changes from terminal oxygen Co–O–Co to Co–O, accelerating the polarization of adjacent oxygen, which is beneficial to the generation of ≡CoIV=O and 1O2. Co defect-rich ZnCo2O4 porous nanosheets exhibit highly active PMS activation activity and stability in p-nitrophenol (PNP) degradation, whose toxicity of degradation intermediates is significant reduction. The Co defect-rich ZnCo2O4 nanosheet catalyst sponge/PMS system achieved stable and efficient removal of PNP with a removal efficiency higher than 93% over 10 h. Extensive research has been conducted on the efficacy of adsorption and photodegradation techniques for the removal of RB from wastewater. While adsorption and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have gained considerable attention for their effectiveness in recent years, the underlying behaviors and mechanisms of these technologies remain incompletely understood. Therefore, a comprehensive summary of recent research progress in this domain is imperative to clarify the basics and present the up-to-date achievements.This review provides an in-depth exploration of the fundamentals, advancements, and future trajectories of RB wastewater treatment technologies, mainly encompassing adsorption and photodegradation. This work starts with a general introduction of outlining the sources, toxicity, and diverse applicable removal strategies. Subsequently, it thoroughly examines crucial techniques within non-photochemical, photochemical, and adsorption technologies, such as UV light assisted AOP, catalyst assisted AOP, ozonation, Fenton system, electrochemical AOP, and adsorption technology. The primary objective is to furnish a broad overview of these techniques, elucidating their effectiveness, limitations, and applicability. Following this, the review encapsulates state-of-the-art computational simulations pertaining to RB adsorption and interactions with clays and other adsorbents. Lastly, it delves into column adsorption of RB dye, and elucidates various influencing factors, including bed height, feed concentration, pollutant (RB) feeding or flow rate, and column regeneration. This panoramic review aims to provide valuable insights into suitable techniques, research gaps, and the applicability of non-photochemical, photochemical, and adsorption technologies in the treatment of wastewater containing RB dye.

The discharge of untreated electroplating wastewater could lead to the formation of toxic metal-organic complexes that is harmful for the environment. There are several processes reported to treat electroplating wastewater such as chemical precipitation, adsorption, coagulation and flocculation, ion exchange, electrocoagulation, membrane filtration, advanced oxidation process and biorecovery. These methods provide the possibility to capture different toxic metals and remove organic pollutants. The combination of different processes together has shown higher efficiencies in removing a wide range of contaminants than single treatment systems. The main challenge is identifying the highest treatment performance and most cost-efficient process. This review provides an overview of treatment technologies for electroplating wastewater and describes the strengths and drawbacks among them. The efficiency of different systems and kinds of pollutants removed, along with a comparison between these systems have been analysed. When comparing the treatment technologies, it is hard to identify the most efficient one as each method has been successful in removing certain pollutants that has not been recovered from the other methods. Therefore, making the decision on identifying the best treatment technology depends on the objective of the treatment and the targeted pollutants. Furthermore, the cost of different technologies has been evaluated based on literature to have a brief look at cost differences between the technologies. When targeting removal of heavy metals, the highest cost of treatment has been reported at around 4.45 $/m3 for the adsorption method employing nano zero valent iron (nZVI). Background: LaCuMnOx (LCMO) perovskite was designed as an effective catalyst to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) to remove bisphenol A (BPA) in hypersaline wastewater. Results: In the LCMO/PDS system, BPA (10 mg/L) was removed completely and the mineralization degree reached 74.9% in the presence of 0.12 g/L catalyst and 1.2 mM PDS. The BPA removal efficiency was still almost 100% even after five cycles. Metal ion leakage also indicated the stability of the catalytic system. •OH, SO4•−, 1O2, and O2•− all contributed to BPA removal, and O2•− accounted for the greatest contribution. The presence of oxygen vacancies (Vo··) on the surface of the catalyst was important for PDS activation and the formation of active species. In addition, the system could still maintain outstanding performance even when [Cl−] and [SO42−] were 100 g/L. CO32− and HCO3− inhibited BPA degradation greatly, even at very low concentrations. The inhibitory effect was related to changes in the pH of the solution caused by the addition of CO32− and HCO3−. This effect could be eliminated by adjusting the pH. Abstract Clean water is a necessity for all life to survive and flourish. However, natural waters are being continuously contaminated due to the release of waste streams in water. Hence, it is important to remove pollutants from wastewater to fulfill human needs. Conventional treatment methods are neither efficient nor economical for wastewaters that especially contain refractory toxic pollutants. This requires novel techniques like Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), that may successfully degrade persistent micropollutants more efficiently. In this study, an azo dye Acid Red 1 was removed by three AOPs, namely Photocatalytic oxidation, Ozonation and Photocatalytic Ozonation, by employing heterogenous catalysts. TiO2 was used as photocatalyst, whereas Fe-Zeolite has been further added as Ozonation catalyst. The study revealed that photocatalysis degraded only 28% Acid red dye after 15 min, whereas for ozonation, the degradation percentage was 95% in same time. In combined photocatalytic ozonation process using TiO2, 95% degradation was achieved in just 9 min and treatment time further reduced to 5 min when Fe-zeolite was added. Optimization studies for initial concentration, UV intensity and catalyst loading were performed. Finally, rate constants and Electrical Energy per Order (EEO) values were determined for all AOPs, and mechanism was proposed.

The textile industry contributes significantly to the expansion of the world economy, however, it is also notorious for producing large amounts of trash and harming the environment. Effective waste management techniques depend on having a thorough understanding of the forms and makeup of waste from the textile sector. The objective of this paper is to study effluent wastewater technologies to efficiently treat and control the wastewater produced during textile production operations. It is well known that the textile industry generates vast amounts of wastewater, some of which may be contaminated with heavy metals, chemicals, dyes, and organic compounds. This effluent can have serious negative effects on the environment if it is not adequately treated, including contaminating soil and water sources, removing aquatic life, and possibly endangering human health. Due to the inclusion of dyes, heavy metals, and other chemicals, the discharge of untreated or improperly treated effluent from textile processes leads to water contamination. Textile waste can leak hazardous compounds into the environment and contaminate the soil, both of which have an impact on air quality. The environmental impact of the textile industry is further exacerbated by the energy and resource use involved in production. At several points in the textile supply chain, waste is generated. Fibre trimmings, fly waste, and yarn waste are produced during the fibre production, spinning, and weaving operations. There are numerous ways and technologies for treating wastewater, including advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), biological treatment systems, and membrane-based technologies. The formation of eco-friendly materials and advancements in recycling technology help to make the textile industry more closed-loop and sustainable. This current study explored the effect of pyrite on the treatment of chlorophenolic compounds (CP) by Fenton process with micron-sized zero-valent iron (ZVI) as the catalyst. The experiments were conducted in batch reactors with 100 mg L−1 CP, 0–0.02 M H2O2, and variable pyrite and ZVI doses (0–1 g L−1). Our findings show that while the reactor with 1 g L−1 ZVI as the only catalyst achieved only 10% CP removal efficiency due to rapid ZVI surface passivation and ZVI particle aggregation, the CP removal efficiency increased with increasing pyrite dose and reached 100% within couple of minutes in reactors with 0.8 g L−1 pyrite and 0.2 g L−1 ZVI. The CP removal was mainly driven by the oxidative treatment of CPs with some strong radicals such as hydroxyl radicals (•OH) while the adsorption onto the catalyst surface was only responsible for 10 to 25% of CP removals, depending on the type of CP studied. The positive impact of pyrite on CP removal by the ZVI/H2O2 system could be attributed to the ability of pyrite to (1) create an acidic environment for optimum Fenton process, (2) provide support material for ZVI to minimize ZVI particle agglomeration, and (3) stimulate iron redox cycling for improved surface site generation. Following oxidative Fenton treatment, the degradation intermediate products of CPs, including some aromatic compounds (benzoquinone, hydroquinone, etc.) and organic acids (e.g., acetic acid), became more biodegradable in comparison to their mother compounds. Overall, the treatment systems with a mixture of ZVI and pyrite as catalyst materials could offer a suitable cost-effective technology for the treatment of wastewater containing biologically non- or low-degradable toxic compounds such as chlorophenols. Featured Application: Elimination of Emerging Pollutants (pesticides) present in effluents from industrial wastewater treatment plants. Emerging pollutants in wastewater pose significant risks to human health and wildlife, particularly due to their persistence in treated effluents from WWTPs. Very recent research has focused on developing new techniques based on advanced oxidation processes using inorganic and organic photocatalysts for treating polluted effluents under visible light. This study investigates a pesticide-removal system utilizing heterogeneous photoactive polymeric materials P2, P3, and P4. These materials, engineered as hydrophilic polymeric microparticles and functionalized with Rose Bengal, have demonstrated efficient singlet oxygen generation and first-order kinetics in the degradation of AHMPD, a pyrimidine fungicide. Given that most studies in the literature have concentrated on urban WWTPs, with less emphasis on industrial wastewater treatment, this research focused on real water samples from the effluent of an industrial WWTP in the agri-food sector, which processes large volumes of citrus and where high concentrations of AHMPD and other pesticides were detected at certain times of the year. The degradation potential of photoactive materials P3 and P4 was evaluated, achieving removal rates of AHMPD up to 85% under conditions of pH = 11 with 48 h of exposure to visible light. The breakdown of dyes, which are environmentally hazardous substances and notoriously difficult to degrade, presents the main treatment challenge for wastewater from textile industries. Most advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for dye degradation usually use costly decolorizing agents, whose residue from Wastewater Treatment Plants may be hazardous to the environment. The present study aimed to apply ultrafine bubbles (UFBs) for water AOPs to degrade textile dyes. Our most recent innovation, ultrafine bubbles, enables the production of reactive oxygen species recently introduced as oxidants in AOPs. First, the disc diffuser was optimized by introducing various flow rates of 1–5 L Per Minute (LPM) to generate UFBs with unique characteristics observed from Zeta Potential, pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), and Oxidation–Reduction Potential (ORP). The air UFBs using a disc diffuser with 3 LPM were selected to degrade the Navacron Ruby S-3B dye solution (1000 Pt-Co). The treatment was optimized on the coagulant dosage (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 ppm) and bubbling times (0–120 min). As a result, the UFBs were successful in degrading the Navacron Ruby S-3B dye solution, resulting in a 45% reduction in Pt-Co color scale with a bubbling time of only 120 min and minimal coagulant dosage (0.5 ppm) compared to the Navacron Ruby S-3B dye solution treatment commonly using a coagulant dosage of 1.5 ppm without UFBs. Based on FTIR, XRF, and PL analysis, we propose the AOP mechanism of hydroxyl radicals for the Navacron Ruby S-3B dye solution. It is emphasized that UFB water AOPs (UFBs–WAOPs) represent a promising alternative technology for treating textile wastewater without chemicals or decolorizing agents. The aging behavior of microplastics (MPs) in the environment has garnered significant attention, yet the exact aging process undergone by microplastics during advanced oxidation still remains unclear. This study emphasized elucidating the oxidation and dechlorination mechanisms of polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC MPs) within the UV-activated sodium percarbonate system (UV/SPC). After 35 h of UV/SPC (0.05 M) treatment, it exhibited effective dechlorination with a Cl− release of 100.62 ± 13.17 mg/L. And this treatment resulted in the fragmentation and release of fragments from the PVC MPs, thereby contributing to their further aging and dechlorination. In addition, an increase in oxygen-containing functional groups was identified. Quenching experiments confirm that · O H and · C O 3 − are the primary active species present in the system. In summary, the aging of PVC MPs results in a process of fragmentation, releasing fragments that are more fragile and susceptible to mineralization compared to the original PVC MPs. The release of chloride ions originates from the mineralization of these fragments released from PVC MPs by · O H and · C O 3 − . Clear and sanitarily adequate water scarcity is one of the greatest problems of modern society. Continuous population growth, rising organics concentrations, and common non-efficient wastewater treatment technologies add to the seriousness of this issue. The employment of various advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in water treatment is becoming more widespread. In this review, the state-of-the-art application of three AOPs is discussed in detail: photocatalysis, sonophotolysis, and sonophotocatalysis. Photocatalysis utilizes semiconductor photocatalysts to degrade organic pollutants under light irradiation. Sonophotolysis combines ultrasound and photolysis to generate reactive radicals, enhancing the degradation of organic pollutants. Sonophotocatalysis synergistically combines ultrasound with photocatalysis, resulting in improved degradation efficiency compared to individual processes. By studying this paper, readers will get an insight into the latest published data regarding the above-mentioned processes from the last 10 years. Different factors are compared and discussed, such as degradation efficiency, reaction kinetics, catalyst type, ultrasound frequency, or water matrix effects on process performance. In addition, the economic aspects of sonophotolysis, photocatalysis, and sonophotocatalysis will be also analyzed and compared to other processes. Also, the future research directions and potential applications of these AOPs in wastewater treatment will be highlighted. This review summarizes the progress over the last fifteen years in visible light reactive photocatalysts for environmental arsenic remediation. The design and performance of several materials including (1) doped and surface functionalized TiO2, (2) binary composites combining TiO2 with another semiconductor that absorbs visible light radiation or a metal (Pt), (3) ternary composites incorporating TiO2, a conductive polymer that can retard electron-hole recombination and an excellent adsorbent material for the removal of As(V), (4) tungsten, zinc, and bismuth oxides, (5) g-C3N4 based catalysts, and (6) M@AgCl core–shell structures. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs that can reduce pain. This study aimed to measure the concentration of piroxicam and celecoxib in Iranian hospitals, as well as the effect of electron beam irradiation on the degradation of these pollutants in synthetic and real samples. The high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to detect the residual analytes in the samples. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to design the experiment conditions that investigate the effect of electron beam irradiation on degradation of piroxicam and celecoxib from synthetic samples, and then according to the optimum condition, the experiments were carried out for real wastewater samples. The results of wastewater analysis shown that the mean concentration of PIRO and CELE were 6.32 ± 2.5 and 11.5 ± 3.2 μg/L, respectively. Also, the findings show that 98.98 % and 97.62 % of piroxicam and celecoxib was degraded, respectively, when the optimum conditions (pH = 4, electron beam irradiation = 8 kGy, and concentrations of 60 μg/L for piroxicam and 50 μg/L for celecoxib) were applied. Results show that the degradation rates of piroxicam and celecoxib in the real wastewater sample at optimum condition were 89.6 % and 84.25 %, respectively. So, electron beam irradiation is a long-lasting and promising method for removal emerging contaminants from wastewater, like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, that can't be removed by conventional wastewater treatment methods; so, it can be used in combination with conventional wastewater treatment methods.

Pathogen removal in wastewater offers a chance to recover water and nutrients for crop production, reducing environmental contamination and public health risks. However, the risk of pathogens regrowing in treated effluents can endanger public health if reused in agriculture, attracting stringent reuse standards. While advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) promise to reduce pathogens, eliminating regrowth potential in AOP-treated effluents requires further scrutiny. This review aimed to summarize the available evidence on understanding pathogen reduction and regrowth potential in AOP-treated effluents, following best practices for scoping reviews like the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA). It covers recent pathogen studies under AOPs, current AOP investigations, the impact of AOP dosage and retention time on pathogen control, and challenges in reusing AOP-treated effluents for crop production. Additionally, it identifies areas needing improvement or complementary treatments for pathogen-free effluents with no regrowth potential. The review concludes by summarizing key findings and suggesting research areas for further exploration.

This study evaluated the efficiency of aluminium (Al)/iron (Fe) bimetallic particles, produced from waste by-products of auto parts manufacturing—namely, aluminum dross (AD) and shot blast (SB)—in removing chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) from coolant oil wastewater originating from an auto parts manufacturer. Two different molar ratios of ADSB bimetallic particles, namely, 1:1 (ADSB1) and 2:1 (ADSB2), were investigated for their characteristics and applied in the modified air-Fenton (MAF) process which enhances the traditional Fenton method by utilizing ADSB bimetallic particles instead of Fe0 and Al0, and by incorporating aeration to stimulate the reaction. The wastewater contained an initial COD ranging from 60,000 to 120,000 mg L–1 (at 3–5 % v/v) and a TOC ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 mg L−1. The experimental design included varying reaction times, pH values, quantities of bimetallic particles, airflow rates, and wastewater concentrations were performed using the Minitab-19 software package. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis revealed that the bimetallic particles have SiO2 content ranging from 39.69 % to 56.03 %, Fe2O3 ranging from 20.52 % to 30.90 % and Al2O3 ranging from 16.51 % to 16.66 %, with surface areas varying between 5 and 6 m2 g−1. As a result of XRF analysis, SiO2 can be contaminated by the sand molds used in the manufacturing process of products. Notably, ADSB1 exhibited impressive removal efficiencies of 98.70 % and 98.50 % for COD and TOC, respectively, at 0.6 g, pH 3, airflow rate of 1.5 L min–1, and reaction time of 105 min. Conversely, ADSB2 achieved removal efficiencies of 96.30 % and 98.43 % for COD and TOC, respectively, at 0.2 g, pH 9, airflow rate of 2.0 L min–1, and reaction time of 180 min. Pareto charts and 3D surface plots derived from the data showed the number of bimetallic particles as the most influential factor, followed by the initial pH. The MAF process significantly extends the pH range under diverse conditions by incorporating ADSB particles and reduces the reliance on traditional chemicals like hydrogen peroxide. This research presents a promising advancement in wastewater treatment technology.

Photocatalysis is an advanced oxidation process where light exposure triggers a semiconducting nanomaterial (nano-photocatalyst) to generate electron-hole (e−/h+) pairs and free radicals. This phenomenon is widely used for the photocatalysis-assisted removal of organic and other contaminants using wide range of nano-photocatalysts, offering an efficient approach to environmental remediation. However, the introduction of powdered nano-photocatalysts into water systems often leads to unintended secondary pollution in the form of residual nano-photocatalysts, ion leaching, free radicals, toxic by-products etc. Such practices potentially introduce emerging secondary contaminants into aquatic environments, posing risks to both aquatic life and human health. The resulting chemical by-products and intermediates can effectively induce chronic toxicity, neurological and developmental disorders, cardiovascular defects, and intestinal ailments in humans and aquatic species. Despite having a range of health and environmental consequences, this dark side of nano-photocatalysts has been comparatively less explored and discussed in the literature. In this review, the pros and cons of powder nano-photocatalysts are discussed in view of their advantages as well as disadvantages in wastewater treatment. The discussion encompasses their classification based on composition, dimensions, structure, and activity, as well as recent advancements in improving their photocatalytic efficiency. The article also explores the recent advances on their applications in photocatalytic removal of various water pollutants/contaminants of emerging concern (i.e., organic pollutants, micro/nano plastics, heavy ions, disinfections, etc.) Furthermore, an emphasis on the role of such nano-photocatalysts as emerging (secondary) contaminants in water system, along with a thorough discussion of latest studies related to the health and environmental issues, has been discussed. Additionally, it addresses critical issues in applying powder nano-photocatalysts for wastewater detoxification and explores potential solutions to these challenges followed by future prospects.

Environmental pollution and energy crises have garnered global attention. The substantial discharge of organic waste into water bodies has led to profound environmental contamination. Photocatalytic fuel cells (PFCs) enabling the simultaneous removal of refractory contaminants and recovery of the chemical energy contained in organic pollutants provides a potential strategy to solve environmental issues and the energy crisis. This review will discuss the fundamentals, working principle, and configuration development of PFCs and photocatalytic microbial fuel cells (PMFCs). We particularly focus on the strategies for improving the wastewater treatment performance of PFCs/PMFCs in terms of coupled advanced oxidation processes, the rational design of high-efficiency electrodes, and the strengthening of the mass transfer process. The significant potential of PFCs/PMFCs in various fields is further discussed in detail. The purpose of the paper is to review the production, consumption, and environmental problems associated with Tetracycline (TC) in surface water, as well as various approaches for its removal. TC is a commonly used antibiotic in both human and veterinary applications. However, its presence in the environment can pose harmful effects on ecosystems. Therefore, it is necessary to treat and mitigate its effects. Several methods have been suggested for removing TC from water, including membrane filtration, coagulation and flocculation, adsorption, and advanced oxidation processes (AOP). Among these methods, AOP and adsorption techniques have gained popularity due to their lower cost and reusability. AOP includes various techniques such as Fenton oxidation, ozonation, photocatalytic oxidation, and electrochemical oxidation. Photocatalytic degradation, in particular, has been recognized as an appropriate, sustainable, and eco-friendly method for removing pollutants from wastewater. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive review of TC's production, consumption, environmental issues in surface water, and the different methods available for its removal. By understanding the challenges associated with TC and the effectiveness of various removal techniques, it is possible to develop plans for moderating its impact on the environment. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are wastewater treatment technologies that stand out for their ability to degrade Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs). The literature has extensively investigated these removal processes for different aqueous matrices. Once technically mature, some of these systems have become accredited to be applied on a large scale, and therefore, their systemic performances in the environmental and cost spheres have also become essential requirements. This study proposed corroborating this trend, analyzing the available literature on the subject to verify how experts in the AOP area investigated this integration during 2015–2023. For this purpose, a sample of publications was treated by applying the Systematic Review (SR) methodology. This resulted in an extract of 83 studies that adopted life-cycle logic to estimate environmental impacts and process costs or evaluated them as complementary to the technical dimension of each treatment technology. This analysis found that both dimensions can be used for selecting or sizing AOPs at the design scale. However, the appropriate choice of the impact categories for the environmental assessment and establishing a methodology for cost analysis can make the approach still more effective. In addition, a staggering number of processes would broaden the reality and applicability of the estimates, and adopting multicriteria analysis methodologies could address essential aspects of decision-making processes during the design of the arrangements. In this study, the photocatalytic activity of nanomaterials Ag/AgX (X = Cl, Br, I) is reported. Highly efficient silver halide (Ag/AgX where X = Cl, Br, I) photocatalysts were synthesized through a hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized using a range of techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) to check their structural, morphology, textural and optical properties. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of photocatalysts was evaluated through the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) under UV and visible light irradiation. XRD analysis confirmed the presence of a single-phase structure (pure phase) in the synthesized photocatalysts. SEM micrographs showed agglomeration with a non-uniform distribution of particles, which is a characteristic of surfactant-free precipitation reactions in aqueous media. The Ag/AgBr photocatalyst exhibited the best degradation efficiency, resulting in 83.37% and 89.39% photodegradation after 5 h of UV and visible light irradiation, respectively. The effect of catalyst loading, initial solution pH, and 2,4-DCP concentration was investigated for the best-performing Ag/AgBr photocatalyst. The degradation kinetics were best described by the pseudo-first-order Langmuir–Hinshelwood model. The photocatalytic capacity of Ag/AgBr decreased by 50% after five reuse cycles. SEM images revealed heightened levels of photodegradation on the catalyst surface. The study proved the feasibility of using simple synthesis methods to produce visible light active photocatalysts capable of degrading refractory phenolic pollutants in aqueous systems. The winery industry generates large volumes of wastewater which can be toxic if released to the environment without proper treatment. The aim of this work was to treat two winery wastewaters (from red and white wine production) using Fenton-based processes. With the application of the best operational conditions, namely, pH = 3.0, [ferrocene] = [FeSO4•7H2O] = 0.50 g/L, [H2O2] = 155 mM, temperature = 298 K, and radiation UV (254 nm), to the treatment of a red WW, a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 98.9 and 84.5% for the homogeneous and heterogeneous photo-Fenton processes, respectively, was achieved. The same conditions were applied in the treatment of a white WW and a 98.9 and 84.5% COD removal was achieved. Based on the results, it can be deduced that homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton-based processes are effective in organic carbon removal, UV-C radiation is essential in hydroxyl radical ( HO • ) generation, and the multiple addition of H2O2 reduces HO • scavenging. This review aims to study in detail the characterization of winery wastewater (WW), the problems caused by its release into the environment without proper treatment, and the processes that can be applied for its treatment. Several works showed that the WW has a composition based on soluble sugars, organic acids, alcohols, and high molecular weight compounds. Among these, the phenolic compounds are considered to be very toxic, due to the difficulty of degradation by microorganisms, and also because they represent toxicity to humans and animals. To solve this issue, biologic treatments are considered to be cheaper and more effective for biodegradable WW, with the possibility to store biogas with anaerobic treatments. To complement biological treatments, physical-chemical processes based on adsorption, coagulation-flocculation-decantation (CFD), and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are also discussed in this review. The use of natural catalysts in various processes, including the electro-Fenton (EF) process, is a topic of interest in current research and development. Natural catalysts are being explored as potential alternatives to conventional catalysts due to their advantages such as sustainability, low-cost, and environmental compatibility. It is worth noting that the application of natural catalysts in the EF process is an active area of ongoing research, and their full-scale implementation may still require further development and optimization. That is why in our work, we chose to use hematite and pyrite as natural catalysts in the degradation of the black azo dye Eriochrome Black T (EBT) by EF process. Color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were compared with those obtained with the conventional catalyst (FeSO4). The pyrite-EF process followed a pseudo-second-order and was found to be more efficient than the hematite-EF process due to the self-adjustment of its pH, it gave slightly lower color (90.30%) and COD (89.20%) removal rates than those obtained with the conventional catalyst (93.05% and 92.06%) after 60 min of treatment. The morphology, chemical composition and crystal structure of hematite and pyrite samples were identified by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction analyses. Furthermore, the study of some operating parameters effects allowed determining the optimal conditions for treatment of the Eriochrome Black T solution: 0.03 g·L-1 (pyrite dose), 8 × 10-3 M (supporting electrolyte concentration) and 15 mA·cm-2 (current density). The pyrite-EF process showed similar behavior to that of FeSO4-EF with a low energy consumption. This study thoroughly explores the application of Ultraviolet (UV) water treatment technology in urban wastewater treatment and water supply in China, highlighting its crucial role in enhancing water quality safety. UV technology, with its environmentally friendly and low-carbon characteristics, is deemed more in line with the demands of sustainable development compared to traditional chemical disinfection methods. The widespread application of UV technology in urban wastewater treatment in China, particularly in the context of urban sewage treatment, is examined. However, to better promote and apply UV technology, there is a need to deepen the understanding of this technology and its application among a broad base of users and design units. The importance of gaining in-depth knowledge about the performance of UV water treatment equipment, the design calculation basis, and operational considerations, as well as the ongoing development of relevant standards, is underscored to ensure that the equipment used in projects complies with engineering design and production requirements. Furthermore, the positive trend of UV technology in the field of advanced oxidation, indicating a promising trajectory for engineering applications, is pointed out. Regarding the prospects of industrial development, a thorough analysis is conducted in the article, emphasizing the necessity for all stakeholders to collaborate and adopt a multi-level approach to promote the sustainable development and application of UV water treatment technology. This collaborative effort is crucial for providing effective safeguards for China's environment, ecology, and human health.

Emerging pollutants in wastewater pose significant risks to human health and wildlife, particularly due to their persistence in treated effluents from WWTPs. Very recent research has focused on developing new techniques based on advanced oxidation processes using inorganic and organic photocatalysts for treating polluted effluents under visible light. This study investigates a pesticide-removal system utilizing heterogeneous photoactive polymeric materials P2, P3, and P4. These materials, engineered as hydrophilic polymeric microparticles and functionalized with Rose Bengal, have demonstrated efficient singlet oxygen generation and first-order kinetics in the degradation of AHMPD, a pyrimidine fungicide. Given that most studies in the literature have concentrated on urban WWTPs, with less emphasis on industrial wastewater treatment, this research focused on real water samples from the effluent of an industrial WWTP in the agri-food sector, which processes large volumes of citrus and where high concentrations of AHMPD and other pesticides were detected at certain times of the year. The degradation potential of photoactive materials P3 and P4 was evaluated, achieving removal rates of AHMPD up to 85% under conditions of pH = 11 with 48 h of exposure to visible light.

Given the growing scarcity of water and the continuous increase in emerging pollutants detected in water bodies, there is an imperative need to develop new, more effective, and sustainable treatments for wastewater. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are considered a competitive technology for water treatment. Specifically, ozonation has received notable attention as a promising approach for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater. However, different groups of pollutants are hardly degradable via single ozonation. With continuous development, it has been shown that using engineered nanomaterials as nanocatalysts in catalytic ozonation can increase efficiency by turning this process into a low-selective AOP for pollutant degradation. Nanocatalysts promote ozone decomposition and form active free radicals responsible for increasing the degradation and mineralization of pollutants. This work reviews the performances of different nanomaterials as homogeneous and heterogeneous nanocatalysts in catalytic ozonation. This review focuses on applying metal- and carbon-based engineered nanomaterials as nanocatalysts in catalytic ozonation and on identifying the main future directions for using this type of AOP toward wastewater treatment.

The breakdown of dyes, which are environmentally hazardous substances and notoriously difficult to degrade, presents the main treatment challenge for wastewater from textile industries. Most advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for dye degradation usually use costly decolorizing agents, whose residue from Wastewater Treatment Plants may be hazardous to the environment. The present study aimed to apply ultrafine bubbles (UFBs) for water AOPs to degrade textile dyes. Our most recent innovation, ultrafine bubbles, enables the production of reactive oxygen species recently introduced as oxidants in AOPs. First, the disc diffuser was optimized by introducing various flow rates of 1–5 L Per Minute (LPM) to generate UFBs with unique characteristics observed from Zeta Potential, pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), and Oxidation–Reduction Potential (ORP). The air UFBs using a disc diffuser with 3 LPM were selected to degrade the Navacron Ruby S-3B dye solution (1000 Pt-Co). The treatment was optimized on the coagulant dosage (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 ppm) and bubbling times (0–120 min). As a result, the UFBs were successful in degrading the Navacron Ruby S-3B dye solution, resulting in a 45% reduction in Pt-Co color scale with a bubbling time of only 120 min and minimal coagulant dosage (0.5 ppm) compared to the Navacron Ruby S-3B dye solution treatment commonly using a coagulant dosage of 1.5 ppm without UFBs. Based on FTIR, XRF, and PL analysis, we propose the AOP mechanism of hydroxyl radicals for the Navacron Ruby S-3B dye solution. It is emphasized that UFB water AOPs (UFBs–WAOPs) represent a promising alternative technology for treating textile wastewater without chemicals or decolorizing agents. Thus, the UFBs-WAOPs are economical and environmentally benign textile wastewater treatment methods.

Pollution of waters by azo dyes is a major global issue because some azo dyes have carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. Therefore, advanced methods are required to remove those pollutants from wastewater. For instance, electrochemical oxidation processes have been developed using various approaches to remove azo dyes from wastewater. Here, we review electrochemical processes for the oxidative degradation of azo dyes. Processes include anodic oxidation, electro-Fenton, photo-electro-Fenton, and solar photo-electro-Fenton. The influence of various parameters including process design, design of reactors, and the characteristic degradation products and their toxicity, are discussed. In recent years, sewage treatment plants did not effectively remove emerging water pollutants, leaving potential threats to human health and the environment. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have emerged as a promising technology for the treatment of contaminated wastewater, and the addition of catalysts such as heavy metals has been shown to enhance their effectiveness. This review focuses on the use of rare earth elements (REEs) as catalysts in the AOP process for the degradation of organic pollutants. Cerium and La are the most studied REEs, and their mechanism of action is based on the oxygen vacancies and REE ion concentration in the catalysts. Metal oxide surfaces improve the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to form hydroxide species, which degrade the organics. The review discusses the targets of AOPs, including pharmaceuticals, dyes, and other molecules such as alkaloids, herbicides, and phenols. The current state-of-the-art advances of REEs-based AOPs, including Fenton-like oxidation and photocatalytic oxidation, are also discussed, with an emphasis on their catalytic performance and mechanism. Additionally, factors affecting water chemistry, such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, inorganic species, and natural organic matter, are analyzed. REEs have great potential for enhancing the removal of dangerous organics from aqueous solutions, and further research is needed to explore the photoFenton-like activity of REEs and their ideal implementation for wastewater treatment. Virtually water and energy security are major issues of modern societies. Massive amounts of industrial effluents are generated that include toxic and emerging contaminants. These compounds could be harmful to the ecosystem, if they are present at levels above the biological tolerance, and their control remains a significant issue. Compendium efforts have been demonstrated to tackle this waste to achieve a sustainable environment. However, conventional wastewater treatments are energy-intensive processes that depend on traditional energy forms. In this regards, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have gained interest in the modern era as they provide a viable wastewater remediation alternative. Utilisation of solar-driven AOPs 'solar photocatalysis' is a potentially sustainable option for the world's water and energy scarcity issues. Based on the undertaken literature, this detailed review focuses on the utilisation of AOPs involving the use of natural and artificial energy sources in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. The paper summarises most recent research based on AOPs with a focus on solar-related wastewater remediation. By collecting data and analysing performance from recent studies, the advances and challenges on solar energy application approaching photo-reactors operational characteristics are demonstrated and the treatment feasibility is also assessed and compared. Different types of solar concentrators for solar photochemical processes installed in wastewater treatment are described in detail. The high availability of solar energy would make the implementation of AOPs sufficient for real applicability especially in the developing countries, hence contributing to a cost-efficient and sustainable treatment. Quinoline (QN) is highly toxic and carcinogenic and has been detected in soil, groundwater, and biological tissues. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have shown promise to address its degradation in wastewater treatment, with catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) being highlighted due to its cost-effectiveness and mild operation. However, developing active and inexpensive catalysts is crucial for CWPO's effectiveness. Another pressing issue is the accumulation of mixed, dirty plastic solid waste (PSW), particularly polyolefins used in packaging. Although recycling rates have increased, much plastic packaging remains in landfills. However, polyolefins can be converted into carbon-based nanostructured materials (CNMs), such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using PSW as a carbon precursor. While many studies focus on CNT preparation, their application is often overlooked. In this context, this work proposes the preparation of CNMs, particularly CNTs, through CVD using a single-stage pyrolysis reactor. Polyolefins (LDPE, HDPE, and PP), both individually and in a mixture simulating PSW, were used as carbon sources. Given a sufficiently high temperature, the desired CNT architecture was successfully synthesized regardless of the starting polymer. These CNMs were then tested as catalysts for CWPO in simulated wastewater containing QN. The results showed a rapid degradation of QN (30–120 min) and high removals of total organic carbon (TOC) and aromatic compounds (75% and >90%, respectively), demonstrating the applicability of PSW-derived CNTs in the CWPO process for QN abatement. The denim textile industry represents an important productive sector. It generates wastewater with low biodegradability due to the presence of persistent pollutants, which can produce toxic and carcinogenic compounds; therefore, wastewater treatment reduces risks to aquatic life and public health. This paper presents a review of 172 papers regarding textile industry wastewater treatment for the removal of contaminants, especially indigo dyes used in the denim industry, in the context of green technologies. The physicochemical characteristics of textile wastewater, its environmental and health impacts, and the permissible limit regulations in different countries were reviewed. Biological, physicochemical and advanced oxidation processes for the removal of indigo dyes were reviewed. The goal of this study was to analyze the characteristics of green technologies; however, the research does not clearly demonstrate an effect on energy consumption savings, carbon footprint decreases, and/or waste generation. Advanced oxidation processes showed the highest color removal efficiency (95 and 97% in synthetic or real wastewater, respectively). Photocatalysis and Fenton reactions were the most efficient processes. None of the revised works presented results regarding upscaling for industrial application, and the results should be discussed in terms of the guidelines and maximum permissible limits established by international legislation. Ferrous oxalate dihydrate (FOD) can be used as a photo-Fenton catalyst with remarkable photo-Fenton catalytic and photocatalytic performances on organic pollutant degradation. Various reduction processes were compared in the current study to synthesize FODs from ferric oxalate solution utilizing the iron source in alumina waste red mud (RM), including natural light exposure (NL-FOD), UV light irradiation (UV-FOD), and hydroxylamine hydrochloride hydrothermal method (HA-FOD). The FODs were characterized and employed as photo-Fenton catalysts for methylene blue (MB) degradation, and the effects of HA-FOD dosage, H2O2 dosage, MB concentration, and the initial pH were investigated. The results show that HA-FOD has submicron sizes and lower impurity contents with more rapid degradation rates and higher degradation efficiencies compared with the other two FOD products. When using 0.1 g/L of each obtained FOD, 50 mg/L of MB can be rapidly degraded by HA-FOD by 97.64% within 10 min with 20 mg/L of H2O2 at pH of 5.0, while NL-FOD and UV-FOD achieve 95.52% in 30 min and 96.72% in 15 min at the same conditions, respectively. Meanwhile, HA-FOD exhibits strong cyclic stability after two recycling experiments. Scavenger experiments reveal that the predominant reactive oxygen species responsible for MB degradation are hydroxyl radicals. These findings demonstrate that submicron FOD catalyst can be synthesized using hydroxylamine hydrochloride hydrothermal process from ferric oxalate solution with high photo-Fenton degradation efficiency and reduced reaction time for wastewater treatment. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can be used as catalysts and adsorbents due to their high stability, safety, and reusability. The preparation of modified LDHs mainly includes coprecipitation, hydrothermal, ion exchange, calcination recovery, and sol–gel methods. LDH-based materials have high anion exchange capacity, good thermal stability, and a large specific surface area, which can effectively adsorb and remove heavy metal ions, inorganic anions, organic pollutants, and oil pollutants from wastewater. Additionally, they are heterogeneous catalysts and have excellent catalytic effect in the Fenton system, persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes, and electrocatalytic system. Increasing input of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has been increasing rapidly nowadays. Various wastewater treatment technologies have been studied to remove EDCs in water and wastewater. Due to its high oxidation potential and other benefits over other tertiary wastewater treatments, the establishment of advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR-AOP) has been of attention in recent years. There are numerous activation methods to produce sulfate radicals from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) such as ultrasound, transition metals, and the use of carbon catalysts. This review manuscript focuses to provide the latest overview of different methods of PDS and PMS activation and different utilization of this technology focusing on water and wastewater treatment. Besides that, this article also focused on the utilization of carbon-based catalysts as a substitute for metal catalysts as an activator in the SR-AOP process. Metal organic frameworks hold great promise as heterogeneous catalysts in sulfate radical (SO 4 ∙-) based advanced oxidation. However, the aggregation of powdered MOF crystals and the complicated recovery procedure largely hinder their large-scale practical applications. It is important to develop eco-friendly and adaptable substrate-immobilized metal organic frameworks. Based on the hierarchical pore structure of the rattan, gravity-driven metal organic frameworks loaded rattan-based catalytic filter was designed to degrade organic pollutants by activating PMS at high liquid fluxes. Inspired by the water transportation of rattan, ZIF-67 was in-situ grown uniformly on the rattan channels inner surface using the continuous flow method. The intrinsically aligned microchannels in the vascular bundles of rattan acted as reaction compartments for the immobilization and stabilization of ZIF-67. Furthermore, the rattan-based catalytic filter exhibited excellent gravity-driven catalytic activity (up to 100 % treatment efficiency for a water flux of 10173.6 L·m−2·h−1), recyclability, and stability of organic pollutant degradation. After ten cycles, the TOC removal of ZIF-67@rattan was 69.34 %, maintaining a stable mineralisation capacity for pollutants. The inhibitory effect of the micro-channel promoted the interaction between active groups and contaminants, increasing the degradation efficiency and improving the stability of the composite. Acid mine drainage was utilized to catalyze the solar photo-Fenton treatment of wastewater coming from a sludge dewatering system. Acid mine drainage in the form of iron-rich liquid or synthesized minerals (namely magnetite, hematite, and goethite) was added in the wastewater, which was treated by means of the solar photo-Fenton process. The effects of operational parameters such as the amount of acid mine drainage, the wastewater matrix (i.e., synthetic and real wastewater), and the initial H2O2 concentration municipal wastewater's organic content were explored. The results showed that using acid mine drainage (liquid phase) for wastewater treatment was more efficient than using the acid-mine-drainage-recovered minerals. Moreover, it was observed that the addition of acid mine drainage above 10.7 mL/L wastewater, which is equivalent to 50 mg/L iron, could substantially reduce the removal percentage of the chemical oxygen demand (COD). At the best conditions assayed, COD removal reached 99% after 90 min of photo-Fenton treatment under simulated solar light, in the presence of 30 mg/L Fe (i.e., 6.4 mL drainage/L of real wastewater) and 1000 mg/L H2O2 at a pH of 2.8. Therefore, the solar photo-Fenton treatment of municipal wastewater catalyzed by acid mine drainage may appear to be a promising method to effectively improve wastewater management, especially in areas with high solar energy potential. The catalytic materials for sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes with the performance of high activity and stable had attracted significant attention in the field of sustainable wastewater treatment. Here, a novel adsorption-reactive composite catalyst with Fe3O4 impregnated acrylamide-based hydrogel (PAM-AMPS/Fe3O4) was designed and synthesized for methylene blue (MB) degradation based on persulfate advanced oxidation processes. For the acrylamide-based hydrogel, the monomer of 2-acrylamide-2-methyl-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) was added to improve the adsorption performance of the composite, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the selected hydrogel was about 40 mg/g. In the presence of the persulfate activated system, the degradation efficiency of MB of PAM-AMPS/Fe3O4 was significantly increased to a level of 94% in 20 min. This value was far superior to catalytic systems without the AMPS. This outstanding performance was benefiting from the synergetic effects of reduced aggregation of Fe3O4 combined with the enhanced adsorption capacity of PAM-AMPS hydrogel. Their cooperative function promoted oxidative decomposition of MB. In addition, PAM-AMPS/Fe3O4 exhibited a good stability and reusability, and it could maintain high degradation efficiency and activity after three successive cycling tests. And at the same time, the produced dominate oxidizing species for MB degradation in the system were identified as SO4•− by the radical quenching experiments. This work laid a foundation for applying PAM-AMPS/Fe3O4 as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for future applications and provided new insights into the design and synthesis of environmentally benign and inexpensive persulfate activators. In this study, PS/UV-C and PMS/UV-C processes were used for the removal of pollutants from domestic and industrial wastewater. The effects of initial oxidant concentration, initial pH value and reaction time on COD and TOC removal efficiencies were determined by laboratory-scale, batch experimental studies. In the results of the study, the highest removal efficiency was obtained with PS/UV-C process at 25 mM oxidant concentration, pH 7 and at the end of the reaction time of 60 min, and the COD and TOC removal efficiencies were found to be 90.5 and 90.8%, respectively. In the study, unit and specific electricity consumptions were also calculated in order to compare the costs of PS/UV-C and PMS/UV-C processes. The optimum removal efficiency for PS/UV-C was obtained at pH 7 and 25 mM PS concentration and at 60 min of reaction time. Unit electricity consumption (EEO) values for COD and TOC parameters were calculated as 39.1 and 38.4 kWh/m3, respectively, and specific electricity consumption (EEM) as 80.5 and 181.8 kWh/kg, respectively. As a result of the kinetic studies obtained f or COD removal in both PS/UV-C and PMS/UV-C applications, it was determined that the reaction was compatible with the second-order kinetic model. PS/UV-C reaction rate was obtained 2 times higher than PMS/UV-C. It has been determined that PS/UV-C process is a more suitable process in terms of removing COD and TOC compared to PMS/UVC in the treatment of this urban wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
