Anaerobic microorganisms are thought to play a critical role in regulating the flux of short-chain gaseous alkanes (SCGAs; including ethane, propane and butane) from terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to the atmosphere. Sulfate has been confirmed to act as electron acceptor supporting microbial anaerobic oxidation of SCGAs, yet several other energetically more favourable acceptors co-exist with these gases in anaerobic environments. Here, we show that a bioreactor seeded with biomass from a wastewater treatment facility can perform anaerobic propane oxidation coupled to nitrate reduction to dinitrogen gas and ammonium. The bioreactor was operated for more than 1000 days, and we used 13C- and 15N-labelling experiments, metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, metaproteomic and metabolite analyses to characterize the microbial community and the metabolic processes. The data collectively suggest that a species representing a novel order within the bacterial class Symbiobacteriia is responsible for the observed nitrate-dependent propane oxidation. The closed genome of this organism, which we designate as 'Candidatus Alkanivorans nitratireducens', encodes pathways for oxidation of propane to CO2 via fumarate addition, and for nitrate reduction, with all the key genes expressed during nitrate-dependent propane oxidation. Our results suggest that nitrate is a relevant electron sink for SCGA oxidation in anaerobic environments, constituting a new microbially-mediated link between the carbon and nitrogen cycles. There is great potential to understand the functional diversity of microorganisms that are involved in waste water treatment through metagenomic analyses. This study presents the first metagenomic comparison of taxonomic and functional profiles of the microbial communities occurring in different aggregates from anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bioreactors. The anammox bacterial communities in both biofilm and granule sludge samples showed relatively high abundance and diversity compared with floccular sludge. Four of the five known genera of anammox bacteria were detected in the three cultures except Candidatus Jettenia, which was absent in the granules. C andidatus Kuenenia comprised the major population of anammox bacteria in these three sludges, independent of their growth morphologies. The genome assembled for the C andidatus Kuenenia in the granule was very similar to the published reference genome of C andidatus K. stuttgartiensis. Genes involved in the metabolism of the anammox process were highly detected in the biofilm and granule sludges. In particular, the abundance of hydrazine synthase gene ( hzs) in the biofilm was around 486 times more pronounced than that in the granules. The presence of a high level of dissolved methane (e.g., 20–26 g m −3 ) in the anaerobic sludge digestion liquor represents a major challenge to the treatment of this stream, as its emission to the atmosphere contributes significantly to the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment. Here we propose a new approach to simultaneous ammonium and dissolved methane removal from the anaerobic digestion liquor through integrating partial nitritation-Anammox and denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) processes in a single-stage membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR). In such an MBfR, the anaerobic digestion liquor is provided in the bulk liquid, while oxygen is supplied through gas-permeable membranes to avoid dissolved methane stripping. A previously developed model with appropriate extensions was applied to assess the system performance under different operational conditions and the corresponding microbial interactions. Both influent surface loading (or hydraulic retention time) and oxygen surface loading are found to significantly influence the total nitrogen (TN) and dissolved methane removal, which jointly determine the overall system performance. The counter diffusion and concentration gradients of substrates cause microbial stratification in the biofilm, where ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) attach close to the membrane surface (biofilm base) where oxygen and ammonium are available, while Anammox and DAMO microorganisms jointly grow in the biofilm layer close to the bulk liquid where methane, ammonium, and nitrite are available with the latter produced by AOB. These results provide first insights and useful information for the design and operation of this new technology for simultaneous ammonium and dissolved methane removal in its potential future applications. Filamentous bulking is a complicated problem in wastewater treatment plants treating various wastewaters, leading to the deterioration of the settling properties and the effluent quality. This study systematically investigated long-term effects of various carbon sources and feeding patterns on the growth of filamentous bacteria, in order to reveal the mechanism of filamentous bulking. Sludge volume index (SVI), microscopic observations, staining (Gram and Neisser staining), scan electron microscopic, and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) were used to monitor the bulking and track the changes of microbial morphology and community structure of activated sludge in six lab-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) fed with different carbon sources. Filamentous bulking was not observed in all SBRs under anoxic feeding pattern with a short fill time, in which SVI remained below 150 mL/g. In contrast, serious bulking (SVI > 500 mL/g) occurred under aerobic feeding pattern when fed with ethanol, propionate, acetate, and glucose, in which Thiothrix and Sphaerotilus natans proliferated as dominant filaments. Compared to glucose-fed reactor, relatively light bulking was caused in starch-fed reactor with the growth of Nostocoida limicola II. In addition, flocs in starch-fed reactor were more open and fluffy than flocs formed on readily biodegradable substrates. Abstract: Limited filamentous bulking (LFB) activated sludge process was proposed by Guo et al. (2010) to increase the removal of tiny suspended particulates in the clarifier and reduce aeration energy consumption. However, when the use of LFB process, ammonium removal efficiency would be compromised due to low dissolved oxygen (DO). In this study, the combination process of nitrogen removal via nitrite and LFB was achieved to enhance nitrogen removal and reduce aeration energy consumption by controlling low DO levels (0.5–1.0mgL−1) in a lab-scale anoxic–oxic reactor (V =66L) treating real domestic wastewater at room temperature. Above 85% of nitrite accumulation ratio was steadily maintained during continuous operation period. The combined process improved the total nitrogen (TN) removal by about 20% in comparison to the traditional process via the nitrate pathway, and also reduced the specific aeration energy consumption by 35%. COD, ammonium and TN removal efficiencies were up to 86%, 94% and 75%, respectively. The process proved effective in achieving a steady LFB state, whereby sludge volume index between 150 and 250mLg−1 was sustained for long-term operation. The microbial community structure was analyzed by fluorescence in situ hybridization, which indicated ammonia-oxidizing bacteria out-competed nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. Moreover, the filaments Type 0041 and Microthrix parvicella proliferated with limited abundance. The results indicated the combination process of LFB and nitrogen removal via nitrite under low DO was a feasible solution for saving energy and enhancing nitrogen removal when treating domestic wastewater. Abstract: Partial nitrification to nitrite has been frequently obtained at high temperatures, but has proved difficult to achieve at low temperatures when treating low strength domestic wastewater. In this study, the long-term effects of temperature on partial nitrification were investigated by operating a sequencing bath reactor with the use of aeration duration control. The specific ammonia oxidation rate decreased by 1.5 times with the temperature decreasing from 25 to 15°C. However, low temperature did not deteriorate the stable partial nitrification performance. Nitrite accumulation ratio was always above 90%, even slightly higher (above 95%) at low temperatures. The nitrifying sludge accumulated with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), but washout of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) was used to determine the short-term effects of temperature on ammonia oxidation process. The ammonia oxidation rate depended more sensitively on lower temperatures; correspondingly the temperature coefficient θ was 1.172 from 5 to 20°C, while θ was 1.062 from 20 to 35°C. Moreover, the larger activation energy (111.5kJmol−1) was found at lower temperatures of 5–20°C, whereas the smaller value (42.0kJmol−1) was observed at higher temperatures of 20–35°C. These findings might be contributed to extend the applicability of the partial nitrification process in wastewater treatment plants operated under cold weather conditions. It is suggested that the selective enrichment of AOB as well as the washout of NOB be obtained by process control before making the biomass slowly adapt to low temperatures for achieving partial nitrification to nitrite at low temperatures. Activated sludge models (ASMs) have been widely used for process design, operation and optimization in wastewater treatment plants. However, it is still a challenge to achieve an efficient calibration for reliable application by using the conventional approaches. Hereby, we propose a novel calibration protocol, i.e. Numerical Optimal Approaching Procedure (NOAP), for the systematic calibration of ASMs. The NOAP consists of three key steps in an iterative scheme flow: i) global factors sensitivity analysis for factors fixing; ii) pseudo-global parameter correlation analysis for non-identifiable factors detection; and iii) formation of a parameter subset through an estimation by using genetic algorithm. The validity and applicability are confirmed using experimental data obtained from two independent wastewater treatment systems, including a sequencing batch reactor and a continuous stirred-tank reactor. The results indicate that the NOAP can effectively determine the optimal parameter subset and successfully perform model calibration and validation for these two different systems. The abundance and diversity of anammox bacteria was investigated in two pilot-scale integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) reactors treating high ammonium wastewater. Reactor A was inoculated with nitrifying sludge, while Reactor B was inoculated with suspended anammox sludge with the dominant anammox bacteria of Candidatus ‘Kuenenia’. After 180 days’ operation, the predominate anammox bacteria was Candidatus ‘Brocadia’ (65%) in the biofilm, while Candidatus ‘Kuenenia’ (86%) outcompeted with other anammox bacteria in suspended sludge in Reactor A. Candidatus ‘Kuenenia’ were dominated in suspended sludge through the entire experiment in Reactor B. In contrast, the predominated species shifted from Candidatus ‘Kuenenia’ (89%) into Candidatus ‘Brocadia’ (66%) in the biofilm of Reactor B. This study indicated that Candidatus ‘Brocadia’ preferred to grow in the biofilm, while Candidatus ‘Kuenenia’ would dominant over other anammox bacteria in the suspended sludge. • PN/A coupling with aerobic methane oxidation enables simultaneous methane and nitrogen removal. • A high-level (>90 %) dissolved methane removal was achieved in a lab MABR. • Aerobic methane oxidation showed a shorter start-up period than anaerobic methane oxidation. • Gas-delivery membrane aeration prevents the stripping of dissolved methane. Dissolved methane is a hurdle for anaerobic wastewater treatment, which would be stripped into the atmosphere by conventional bubble aeration and increase the release of greenhouse gases into the environment. The high oxygen transfer efficiency and less turbulence in membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) could prevent the stripping of dissolved methane. In this study, an MABR was established to remove dissolved methane aerobically in parallel to the nitrogen removal driven by the anammox process. The long-term results demonstrated that aerobic methane oxidation has a short start-up period, in which a high level (>90 %) of dissolved methane removal was achieved in 20 days. Meanwhile, the anammox-based nitrogen removal process reached a total nitrogen removal rate of ∼150 mg N/L/d (0.27 g N/m2/d). In situ batch tests confirmed the active bioreactions of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, anammox bacteria and aerobic methanotrophs, while 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing further validated their existence. Moreover, nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) bacteria were enriched to a relative abundance of 2.5 % on Day 372, suggesting their potential role in removing nitrogen and dissolved methane in the MABR. Abstract: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sewage effluent and its transformation during pilot wastewater treatment processes (WWTPs) was characterized and compared using size exclusion chromatography (SEC) as well as other organic matter analytic methods. DOM in effluents from an artificial wastewater, a landfill leachate, a saline wastewater, and DOM collected from surface water were also tested for comparison. As for pilot WWTPs operating with the same actual wastewater feed, the DOM transformation was comparable: low MW (<500Da) and middle MW (>5000Da) organic materials decreased, while humic-like substances with MW of 650Da, 1700Da and 2000Da and large MW organic materials (SMPs) with MW>10,000Da were aggregated. DOM in effluents from different sewage displayed their own characteristic SEC chromatograms. The properties of sewage effluent were influenced by the wastewater source, operation parameters and the inflow style of the biological treatment process. The only intensity difference in the SEC chromatogram was observed for effluents from WWTPs operating with the same actual wastewater feed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Shortcut nitrogen removal holds significant economic appeal for mainstream wastewater treatment. Nevertheless, it is too difficult to achieve the stable suppression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), and simultaneously maintain the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). This study proposes to overcome this challenge by employing the novel acid-tolerant AOB, namely " Candidatus Nitrosoglobus", in a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR). Superior partial nitritation was demonstrated in low-strength wastewater from two aspects. First, the long-term operation (256 days) under the acidic pH range of 5.0 to 5.2 showed the successful NOB washout by the in situ free nitrous acid (FNA) of approximately 1 mg N/L. This was evidenced by the stable nitrite accumulation ratio (NAR) close to 100 % and the disappearance of NOB shown by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Second, oxygen was sufficiently supplied in the MABR, leading to an unprecedentedly high ammonia oxidation rate (AOR) at 2.4 ± 0.1 kg N/(m3 d) at a short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of a mere 30 min. Due to the counter diffusion of substrates, the present acidic MABR displayed a significantly higher apparent oxygen affinity (0.36 ± 0.03 mg O 2 /L), a marginally lower apparent ammonia affinity (14.9 ± 1.9 mg N/L), and a heightened sensitivity to FNA and pH variations, compared with counterparts determined by flocculant acid-tolerant AOB. Beyond supporting the potential application of shortcut nitrogen removal in mainstream wastewater, this study also offers the attractive prospect of intensifying wastewater treatment by markedly reducing the HRT of the aerobic unit. Abstract Denitrifying sulfur conversion-associated enhanced biological phosphorous removal (DS-EBPR) system is not only a novel wastewater treatment process, but also an ideal model for microbial ecology in a community context. However, it exists the knowledge gap on the roles and interactions of functional microorganisms in the DS-EBPR system for carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) bioconversions. We use genome-resolved metagenomics to build up an ecological model of microbial communities in a lab-scale DS-EBPR system with stable operation for more than 400 days. Our results yield 11 near-complete draft genomes that represent a substantial portion of the microbial community (39.4%). Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) promote complex metabolic processes and interactions for C, N, P and S conversions. Bins 1–4 and 10 are considered as new potential polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs), in which Bins 1–4 can be considered as S-related PAOs (S-PAOs) with no previously cultivated or reported members. Our findings give an insight into a new ecological system with C, N, P and S simultaneous bioconversions and improve the understanding of interactions among SRB, SOB, denitrifiers and PAOs within a community context. The discovery of denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) has not only improved our understanding of global methane and nitrogen cycles, but also provided new technology options for removal of nitrate from nitrate-contaminated water. Previous studies have demonstrated DAMO organisms could remove nitrate and nitrite from wastewater under strictly anaerobically conditions. In the study, we investigate the feasibility of nitrate removal from groundwater, which contains dissolved oxygen in addition to nitrate. A membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR), inoculated with DAMO co-culture, was capable of treating synthetic groundwater containing highly contaminated nitrate (50  mg N/L) and oxygen (7–9 mg O 2 /L), with a maximum volumetric nitrate removal rate of 45 mg N/L-d. Accumulations of acetate and propionate were observed in some transient periods, indicating the possible involvement of acetate and propionate as intermediates in methane oxidation. The 16 S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that Candidatus Methylomirabilis, a known bacterial DAMO organism able to couple nitrite reduction with anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), was the dominant population. No archaeal DAMO organisms that are capable of coupling nitrate to AOM were observed, however, considerable amount of denitrifiers were developed in this system. Based on known metabolisms of these microorganisms and a series of batch studies, it was assumed that methane was oxidized into volatile fatty acids (VFAs) under oxygen-limiting conditions, then the generated VFAs served as carbon sources for these heterotrophic denitrifiers to remove nitrate. • Low DO can initiate NOB suppression in MABRs. • Low DO cannot suppress active NOB in MABRs once prevail. • The presence of anammox increases the DO threshold to suppress NOB. • NOB suppression is more challenging in counter-diffusion biofilms than in co-diffusion biofilms. Membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) and shortcut nitrogen removal are two types of solutions to reduce energy consumption in wastewater treatment, with the former improving the aeration efficiency and the latter reducing the oxygen demand. However, integrating these two solutions, i.e., achieving shortcut nitrogen removal in MABR, is challenging due to the difficulty in suppressing nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). In this study, four MABRs were established to demonstrate the feasibility of initiating, maintaining, and restoring NOB suppression using low dissolved oxygen (DO) control, in the presence and absence of anammox bacteria, respectively. Long-term results revealed that the strict low DO (< 0.1 mg/L) in MABR could initiate and maintain stable NOB suppression for more than five months with nitrite accumulation ratio above 90 %, but it was unable to re-suppress NOB once they prevailed. Moreover, the presence of anammox bacteria increased the threshold of DO level to maintain NOB suppression in MABRs, but it was still incapable to restore the deteriorated NOB suppression in conjunction with low DO control. Mathematical modelling confirmed the experimental results and further explored the differences of NOB suppression in conventional biofilms and MABR biofilms. Simulation results showed that it is more challenging to maintain stable NOB suppression in MABRs compared to conventional biofilms, regardless of biofilm thickness or influent nitrogen concentration. Kinetic mechanisms for NOB suppression in different types of biofilms were proposed, suggesting that it is difficult to wash out NOB developed in the innermost layer of MABR biofilms because of the high oxygen level and low sludge wasting rate. In summary, this study systematically demonstrated the challenges of NOB suppression in MABRs through both experiments and mathematical modelling. These findings provide valuable insights into the applications of MABRs and call for more studies in developing effective strategies to achieve stable shortcut nitrogen removal in this energy-efficient configuration. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an innovative nitrogen removal process that is widely used in wastewater treatment due to its energy-saving potential and ability to reduce carbon emissions. However, research on the application of anammox in full-scale industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is limited, and its environmental impacts are yet to be fully understood. This study evaluates the performance and environmental burdens of one-stage partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A) in a full-scale WWTP treating coal chemical wastewater, with different demonstration periods. Compared with conventional nitrification–denitrification, the energy footprint and carbon footprint of the PN/A process were significantly lower and effluent quality was improved. Based on the four-quadrant clustering method, the overall performance of the studied WWTP achieved the greatest synergy during the stable operation period. Life cycle assessment has shown that the PN/A process significantly reduces the system's contribution to environmental indicators. According to the sensitivity analysis, the fluctuations in energy consumption and chemical usage have significant environmental impacts, with differential sensitivity in the environmental impacts of two demonstration periods. Therefore, considering the specific situation of the WWTPs, optimizing the parameters/indicators most sensitive to environmental impact is essential to reducing environmental loads. Importantly, this work demonstrated that PN/A can improve the operational performance of full-scale industrial WWTPs with lower environmental burdens, providing valuable guidance for the development of sustainable wastewater treatment processes. Acidic partial nitritation (PN) has emerged to be a promisingly stable process in wastewater treatment, which can simultaneously achieve nitrite accumulation and about half of ammonium reduction. However, directly applying anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process to treat the acidic PN effluent (pH 4−5) is susceptible to the inhibition of anammox bacteria. Here, this study demonstrated the adaptation of anammox process to acidic pH in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). By feeding the laboratory-scale MBBR with acidic PN effluent (pH = 4.6 ± 0.2), the pH of an anammox reactor was self-sustained in the range of pH 5 − 6. Yet, a high total nitrogen removal efficiency of over 80% at a practical loading rate of up to 149.7 ± 3.9 mg N/L/d was achieved. Comprehensive microbial assessment, including amplicon sequencing, metagenomics, cryosection-FISH, and qPCR, identified that Candidatus Brocadia, close to known neutrophilic members, was the dominant anammox bacteria. Anammox bacteria were found present in the inner layer of thick biofilms but barely present in the surface layer of thick biofilms and in thin biofilms. Results from batch tests also showed that the activity of anammox biofilms could be maintained when subjected to pH 5 at a nitrite concentration of 10 mg N/L, whereas the activity was completely inhibited after disturbing the biofilm structure. These results collectively indicate that the anammox bacteria enriched in the present acidic MBBR could not be inherently acid-tolerant. Instead, the achieved stable anammox performance under the acidic condition is likely due to biofilm stratification and protection. This result highlights the biofilm configuration as a useful solution to address nitrogen removal from acidic PN effluent, and also suggests that biofilm may play a critical role in protecting anammox bacteria found in many acidic nature environments. The recent discovery of complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) bacteria has fundamentally upended the traditional two-step nitrification conception, but their functional importance in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is still poorly understood. This study investigated distributions of comammox Nitrospira , ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in activated sludge samples collected from 25 full-scale WWTPs. Using quantitative PCR (qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, our results revealed that comammox Nitrospira ubiquitously occurred in all of 25 WWTPs and even outnumbered AOB and AOA with an average abundance of 1∼183 orders of magnitude higher in 19 WWTPs. Moreover, DNA-based stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) assays validated that comammox Nitrospira actively participated in ammonia oxidation in the three microcosms seeding with activated sludge from three typical WWTPs, in which the ratios of comammox amoA to AOB amoA were at the range of 1∼10, 10∼100 and >100, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis in heavy fractions further indicated that Nitrospira nitrosa (N. nitrosa) was the dominant and active species. We quantified the contribution of ammonia oxidizers based on the currently available kinetic parameters of the representative species and found that comammox made major contributions to ammonia oxidation than other nitrifiers (5 ∼ 106 times that of AOB). The widespread use of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) results in their movement into wastewater treatment facilities and subsequently to agricultural soils via application of contaminated sludge. On-route, the chemical properties of Ag may change, and further alterations are possible upon entry to soil. In the present study, we examined the long-term stability and (bio)availability of Ag along the "wastewater-sludge-soil" pathway. Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed that ca. 99% of Ag added to the sludge reactors as either Ag-NPs or AgNO3 was retained in sludge, with ≥79% of this being transformed to Ag2S, with the majority (≥87%) remaining in this form even after introduction to soils at various pH values and Cl concentrations for up to 400 days. Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT), chemical extraction, and plant uptake experiments indicated that the potential (bio)availability of Ag in soil was low but increased markedly in soils with elevated Cl, likely due to the formation of soluble AgClx complexes in the soil solution. Although high Cl concentrations increased the bioavailability of Ag markedly, plant growth was not reduced in any treatment. Our results indicate that Ag-NPs entering soils through the wastewater-sludge-soil pathway pose low risk to plants due to their conversion to Ag2S in the wastewater treatment process, although bioavailability may increase in saline soils or when irrigated with high-Cl water. Abstract: A pilot-scale modified step feed process was proposed to enhance organics and nutrient (N and P) removal performance from municipal wastewater. It combined University of Cape Town (UCT) and step feed process. Effects of inflow distribution ratios and nutrients ratios were investigated. The highest removal efficiencies of 89% for chemical oxygen demanding (COD), 88% for total nitrogen (TN) and 93% for phosphorus were obtained, respectively, at the inflow distribution ratio of 40:30:30%. The phosphorus removal exhibited an upward trend with the increasing of influent COD/P and TN/P, and the nitrogen removal had a positive correlation with influent COD/TN. In addition, aerobic simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and anoxic denitrifying phosphorus uptake made a distinct contribution to enhance nutrient removal. The proposed system was demonstrated to be an attractive enhanced biological nutrient removal process for wastewater treatment plants due to relatively high nutrient removal, robust sludge settleability and energy savings. The prevalence of micropollutants (MPs) and antibiotic resistance in aquatic environments has raised increasing concern for public health and ecological security. Conventional wastewater treatment processes have limited efficiency to remove these emerging contaminants. Recently, photocatalytic processes have been proposed as a promising solution to achieve enhanced performance, but there are very few studies focusing on simultaneous removal of both chemical and biological contaminants. To test the technical feasibility of a "one-stop" photocatalytic process, we evaluated the photocatalytic performance of a urea-based graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4) for simultaneous removal of multiple MPs, as well as antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). After a 10 min treatment under simulated solar irradiation, five MPs including sulfamethoxazole, diclofenac, mecoprop, benzotriazole, and carbamazepine (10 µ g/L each) were effectively removed from spiked MilliQ water (88% of total removal efficiency) and real wastewater effluent (83% of total removal efficiency), respectively. In addition, 6.2-log reduction (complete inactivation) and 4.3-log reduction of ARB were observed after 60 min reaction in MilliQ water and real wastewater effluent, respectively. Moreover, ARB lost their self-repair function after the treatment. Lastly, atomic force microscopy images and qPCR analysis revealed that, not only the abundance of ARB but also extracellular ARGs (e-ARGs) decreased over the treatment peroid. Experiments trapping reactive species suggested that superoxide radicals (O 2 •-) and holes (h+) were the major active radicals contributing to contaminants degradation. The effective treatment performance for both chemical and biological contaminants, low manufacturing costs and ease of use make g-C 3 N 4 a promising catalyst for application in the tertiary wastewater treatment processes. Nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) processes have been proven effective for nitrogen removal from synthetic wastewater. However, the demonstration using real wastewater has not been achieved yet. To this end, this study investigated the versatile applications of n-DAMO process in real wastewater treatment for the first time. Two methane-based membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs) were employed to combine anammox and n-DAMO microorganisms, targeting nitrogen removal in mainstream (i.e., domestic sewage) and sidestream (i.e., anaerobic digestion liquor), respectively. Considering various technologies in sewage treatment, three different technical routes, including nitritation + methane-based MBfR, partial nitritation + methane-based MBfR and partial nitritation + anammox + methane-based MBfR, were investigated comprehensively, all producing effluent quality with total nitrogen (TN) at 5 mg N/L or less. Regarding the sidestream treatment, the methane-based MBfR also removed up to 96% TN from the partially nitrified anaerobic digestion liquor at a practically useful rate of 0.5 kg N/m3/d. Microbial communities revealed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing indicated the dominance of n-DAMO archaea in both reactors, along with the existence of anammox bacteria and n-DAMO bacteria. As the first demonstration of n-DAMO process in real wastewater, this study comprehensively confirmed the applicability of using methane as carbon source to remove nitrogen from both mainstream and sidestream wastewater, supporting their adoption by industries in practice.
